2023 COMMUNITY NEEDS ASSESSMENT

This report compiles information collected from various community members to assess the needs of the Black community in Butte, CA The focus is on identifying major concerns, desired resources, and potential solutions to improve the quality of life and opportunities for the community

CONCERNS

Addiction is prevalent in

communities Economic barriers persist due to discriminatory hiring practices and limited job training access, requiring programs to enhance employment opportunities and skills training Health disparities arise from a lack of trust in medical institutions, necessitating improved cultural competence and equitable healthcare access Safety concerns, particularly regarding police brutality, call for community policing initiatives and law enforcement accountability Financial instability among Black

and Art Museums

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR INCREASING RESILIENCY

To address the challenges faced by the Black community, we propose several solutions:

Educational Access and Support: Implement a culturally sensitive curriculum representing Black history and culture Introduce STEAM programs, job training, and financial literacy initiatives Support holistic development through after-school programs, childcare centers, and music and art museums Establish mentorship programs to guide and support Black students

Community Engagement and Support: Create neutral, welcoming spaces like community centers or cafes to enhance communication between parents and teachers Promote community engagement projects that foster collaboration through events, workshops, and family-oriented activities Increase the representation of teachers and staff of color to provide role models, create an inclusive school environment, and support preventative programming

Affordable Housing: Develop more affordable housing options to ensure Black families access to safe and secure living conditions, focusing on projects for low-income families

Health Education and Services: Provide accessible mental health services tailored to the Black community Implement health education programs focused on preventive care and chronic disease management Increase the number of Black healthcare providers to improve trust and care quality

Support for Small Businesses: Offer training and resources for aspiring Black entrepreneurs, including workshops on business planning, marketing, and financial management Provide financial assistance and equitable access to capital and government contracts to help Black-owned businesses thrive and contribute to the local economy

These solutions aim to create a more equitable and supportive environment for the Black community in Butte County, fostering growth, stability, and success
