ABOUT THE COVER Five hundred thirty nine contestants entered 2,529 photos in the 2014 Army Digital Photography Contest. The entries were judged at the U.S. Army Installation Management Command headquarters on Joint Base San Antonio-Fort Sam Houston. From those entries, the U.S. Army Installation Management Command awarded recognition to three deserving entries from Fort Bliss; Rachele Frickey’s “Flower Girl,” Tara Ruby’s “Finally Home” and Elizabeth Loman-Hayes “Smell of Spring” (see page 34).

For interested partons, the 2015 Army Digital Photography Contest will run from Oct. 15 through Nov. 30. MWR-authorized patrons who enjoy arts and crafts might also be interested in the 2015 Army Arts and Crafts Contest, which will run from May 1 through June 30.

EASTER-AVAGANZA This Easter, we’re laying out a Rockin’ welcome for the Easter Bunny with the Easter-avaganza: Bunny Hop and Holiday Parade Saturday, April 4. The fun will take place at Biggs Park from noon-4 p.m.

Take part in the Easter parade on the sidewalk around Biggs Park at noon. Bring your decorated 1950’s-themed strollers, bikes, scooters, wagons, outfits and more ... the sky is the limit, as long as your vehicle is non-motorized. enjoy your favorite jukebox hits from the 50’s, dancing and free photos with the Easter Bunny.

MEMBER APPREC Underwood Golf Complex will host a membership drive and appreciation dinner at their Spring Swing Event on April 10-11.

Festivities will begin at 6 p.m. on Friday, April 10. The member appreciation dinner is free and open to new and existing members.

The membership drive kicks off on Friday with benefits for existing members.

For example, existing member will receive a $25 gift card for every friend they refer that signs up for a 3 month membership, a $50 gift card for a 6 month membership, a $75 gift card for a 9 month membership and a $100 gift card for a 12 month membership.

Gift cards are for the pro shop and can be used for merchandise and cart or green fees.

Are you ready to get dirty? Don’t miss the Old Ironsides Mud Challenge from 9 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Saturday, April 25 at the Air Assault Course on West Fort Bliss.

Take on the challenge of a four-mile course with more than 16 obstacles. It’s a race to the finish line: the first 500 runners to complete the course successfully will receive an Old Ironsides Mud Challenge T-shirt! The run is open to all, including the El Paso community.

The mud run is open to youth and adults; however, any runners under age 18 must

SOCCER GOLF

Soccer Golf is a fun new alternative to the traditional golf game which combines the popular sports of soccer and golf. The best part is anyone can play! The game will make its debut at Underwood Golf

Complex on Thursday, April 16 from 3-6 p.m.

To play Soccer Golf, players use soccer balls in place of a golf ball. The object is to get a soccer ball with the lowest number of kicks from the tee area into the designated area around the hole. There will be 9 holes available for Soccer Golf play that day.

The event is open to DoD ID card holders and their family members and authorized users. The cost is $15 to play plus $6 for cart rental if you choose to ride. For more information call, (915) 568-1059.

Join Army Community Service (ACS) Family Advocacy Program for the 11th Annual MCCASA Walk to help raise awareness of Month of the Military Child, Child Abuse, and Sexual Assault. This free two-mile walk will take place at Biggs Park on Saturday, April 11 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m.

In addition to the walk, ACS has a day full of activities and fun planned with food, games, demonstrations and more.

OPERATION MEGAPHONE Join the YouthPlex in celebrating Worldwide Lockin 2015 with Operation Megaphone! Operation Megaphone will take place on April 24-25 beginning at 10 p.m. Participants will meet at the YouthPlex, 195 Chaffee Road then take a bus to each facility.

The fun begins at Bob O’s and ends at Oasis Lanes.

This event is open to all 6th12th graders. Students will also have the opportunity to participate in the Amazing Race Team Competition (optional).

The cost is $10 with 4 canned goods or $20 with no canned goods. There will also be a $5 late fee if you pay the day of the event. Permission slips are required.

8 MILE BIKE RIDE

Spend the day at Chuck Heinrich Park on a guided mountain bike ride Saturday, May 9 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The trail starts with a hike-a-bike up the dam, then a continuous gradual climb for 1 mile; turn onto Lazy Cow trail for a fun 3 mile section of singletrack. After catching your breath at the ranch roundhouse, head back down the trail to end at the Chuck Heinrich Park parking lot.

MILITARY SPOUSE APPRECIATION Military spouses are an integral part of the military’s mission. Often they are refered to as the ‘force behind the force.” On Friday, May 8, Fort Bliss will honor its military spouses with a Military Spouse Appreciation Day event presented by Family and MWR and Army Community Service.

From 11 a.m.-4 p.m., head to the Family Resilience Center for a free expo filled with fun and relaxation. It’s all available on a firstcome, first-served basis. Free childcare is available for daytime classes. Child must

ARMED FORCES DAY TRIATHLON

Join Bliss Sports, Fitness and Aquatics for the fifth annual Armed Forces Day Triathlon Saturday, May 16.

The race begins at 7 a.m. at the Aquatics Training Center on Central Fort Bliss. The race is part of the Southwest Challenge Series.

The 2015 Armed Forces Day Triathlon consists of a 400-meter swim, a 15-mile bike route and a 5-kilometer run. USA Triwww.blissmwr.com

LET’S GO CAMPING Whether you are an experienced camper or just looking for an activity to share with your family and friends, this is your opportunity. Sleep under the stars in one of the most beautiful parks in New Mexico on May 16.

For just $10 per person or $35 for a family of 4, campers will enjoy games in the sand, camping, burgers and hotdogs and all necessary camping equipment.

GOLD STAR PINS

SYMBOLS OF HONOR

In 1947, Congress approved the use of the Gold Star Lapel Button as a way to recognize the Families of service members who lost their lives while engaged in action against an enemy of the United States. In 1977, the Army approved issue of the Lapel Button for the Next of Kin of Deceased Personnel to honor those who lost their lives while serving on active duty or while assigned in a Reserve or National Guard unit in a drill status. Issue of the button is retroactive to 29 March 1973.

These small lapel buttons are normally presented to eligible Family members prior to the military funeral service. Although they are less than an inch in size, they are packed with great meaning and emotion. They are not awards. They are symbols of honor. Here is how you can tell them apart.

GOLD STAR LAPEL This symbol consists of a gold star on a purple background, bordered in gold and surrounded by gold laurel leaves. It is designated for eligible survivors of service members who lose their lives during any armed hostilities in which the United States is engaged, dating back to World War I. This includes service members who lose their lives while deployed in support of military operations against the enemy or during an international terrorist attack.

5 Ways to Say “Thank You” to Our Military Heroes through MWR

It’s Military Appreciation Month and Army MWR shares an attitude of gratitude toward our Military Heroes! Whether it’s a holiday or monthly observance, it’s always the perfect time to honor and show appreciation to our military men and women. We have five ways that you can say “Thank You” to those who serve through MWR programs here on Fort Bliss:

VOLUNTEER Sometimes the best gift you can offer is your own expertise. There are a variety of volunteer opportunities within Army Community Service (ACS). You can volunteer your professional skills and talents to teach workshops and assist with volunteerism on the installation. Volunteer opportunities are available to teach classes about military life, job preparation skills, resilience training, budgeting and parenting classes.

HONOR THE FALLEN Show your respect to the Fallen by attending an event that honors those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. There are also opportunities to volunteer with local cemeteries, during the holidays that honor U.S. military, to help set up flags on the gravesites of the Fallen. Another way to honor the Fallen and surviving family members is to learn about the Army’s Gold Star Pins Campaign.

LEARN There are literally thousands of books about military history, from famous battles to famous firsts. If you’re not into long reads, you can pull up some videos that cover the history of a certain time or place rich in military tradition. The idea is that more knowledge will lead to a better understanding and appreciation of what the military does. Learn more about Army Library Resources available to you.

SEND A CARE PACKAGE Everyone loves getting care packages, especially our Soldiers away from home. Whether they’re stationed away from home or on deployment, receiving any bit of home in a package can make anyone feel special. Check with ACS to find or organize a group that makes care packages. You can also check with organizations in your local area such as, Any Soldier, an organization that helps with navigating the shipping process, packaging and sending packages with approved items.

SEND A THANK YOU CARD Writing letters to Soldiers is a wonderful way to show your appreciation for their sacrifice, courage and selfless service. Even in this digital age, service members love to receive handwritten letters and notes. Children can also get involved in this activity – it’ll boost their spirits just as much as the Soldiers! As a bonus, all it costs you is a bit of time and a stamp. Contact ACS to find a group, and CYSS to organize a youth group or go through a site such as A Million Thanks to send your cards.

Nathan and Courtney Jacks met while they were both stationed in Germany. They married and soon after were stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas where they welcomed their beautiful baby girl Sophia into the world. After the birth of their daughter, the Jacks Family found themselves faced with the challenge of leaving the Army and rejoining the Civilian world.

Nathan Jacks was in the Reserves and Courtney Jacks was a new mother with a quickly approaching ETS date. When active-duty personnel decide to leave the military, it is the start of one of the biggest changes in their lives. For some, that change means searching for a new page 20

job for the first time in 20 years or more.

This change may also mean moving to a new location while searching for that job.

“A lot of Soldiers get out and they are not prepared for the transition,” said Nathan.

The stress this places on them and their Families is quite intense.

An effective way for military members to address this challenge is to enroll in a college degree or certification program that either matches their current job or what they want to do when they leave the service. Western Technical College offers a wide variety of educational opportunities that include but are not limited to; certifications in, Medical Clinical Assistant, Massage Therapy, Advanced welding, and Associate of Applied Science Degrees in, Diesel Mechanics, Physical Therapist Assistant, and Refrigeration and HVAC Technology.

The couple took advantage of the military tuition discount that Western Technical College offers. The tuition discount is offered to all branches if active-duty, reserve service-members, honorably discharged veterans, and National Guard members, as well as their dependents. Upon the completion of the Diesel program, Nathan will have an Associate of Occupation Studies in

Diesel Mechanics. Courtney will have earned a Medical Clinical Assistant with X-Ray Technology certificate. Nathan plans to use his degree and certifications to secure a well-paying job with a great company. Courtney aspires to continue her education and one day become a Registered Nurse in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

Mr. and Mrs. Jacks are not the only members of the family that frequent the Western Technical College campus.

Western Technical College offers their students onsite child care. The onsite child care works with the Texas Workforce’s Child Care Service (CCS). CCS is an income-based service for parents who work, attend school or participate in job training. The service allows for both Mr. and Mrs. Jacks to attend school while Sophia is well taken care of in close proximity allowing her parents to visit at their convenience.

MILO’S ADVICE With summer right around the corner, I wanted to talk about a subject that is near and dear to my puppy heart; being a responsible pet parent! Summer time calls for fun in the warm summer sun. However, the warmer weather also brings with it fleas, ticks, mosquitos and all the other little scary insects that like to bite me from time to time. So, I hope my advice will help you be a better pet parent to your furry, four-legged friends.

First off, let’s talk about how nice it is to spend time outdoors. With summer comes a lot of outdoor activities! I bet your fur friends love to be in the great outdoors with you; I know I do! Especially if I have a ball! But, what happens if your fur friend gets lost? It happens! There are several ways that you can reduce the risk of your fur friends being lost for long periods of time that are pretty simple and inexpensive. For example, make sure that your fur friend has an ID tag on their collar with up-to-date contact information. Having your fur friend micro-chipped is also a must.

All of these are great ways to keep us safe and ensure that if we do wander off, we make our way home.

Next is proper training and exercise. Sometimes we aren’t the most wellbehaved. We chew on your furniture and shoes because we’re bored. These behaviors can easily be corrected with simple training and exercise techniques. We can’t walk or teach ourselves right from wrong; we need our humans to teach us along the way.

No time is better than having nice warm weather to get out and get active for a longer, healthier life together.

While we are talking about health, your fur friends need to make sure to go to the doctor just as much as you do. We need our shots to protect us from getting sick as well as monthly medication to keep us safe from those pesky little fleas and ticks. Keeping us healthy costs very little in comparison to what it could cost if left untreated.

And lastly, make sure to socialize and love your fourlegged friend. Summer is a great time to get outdoors; make sure that you’re taking

your fur friend with you. We like to feel like part of the Family; we are pack animals and thrive on being close to you. Take us to the park or a restaurant that has an outdoor patio, take us on a Family hike, bike or car ride.

We don’t care where we go just as long as we are with you!

One last thing, El Paso is hot; make sure that your fur friend has a lot of clean, fresh water to keep cool.

The Military Spouse

STRENGTH

Kimberleigh Tinsley, Guest Writer and Military Spouse When I hear the term “military spouse,” my immediate thought is the obvious, a person married to someone that has chosen to stand and fight in defense of this beautiful land. But when I really sit and wrap my head around what it means to be a military spouse, I know there’s much more to it than that.

People are rarely ever just one thing. We wear many different titles, mommies/daddies, college students, professionals, etc. but there is something particularly special about holding the title of “military spouse.” It comes with responsibilities and benefits that are incomparable.

Being that Military Spouse Appreciation Day is May 8th, I’d like to use this article as a platform to pay homage to fellow military spouses as well as share my experience.

I married into the Army in 2011, although, I had close ties to the military as I had joined the Army Reserves in 2009. It didn’t take long, though, to see the vast difference in being a Soldier myself and being a Soldier’s spouse. At any given time, my emotions would range from immense pride to debilitating fear and anxiety over deployments. We all know it comes with the territory of marrying a service member but that doesn’t necessarily make the pill easier to swallow. I got my first dose of reality as a military spouse when my husband went out of state for 6 weeks of training. Our daughter was only 4 months old at the time and I was completely out of my element as a first-timemom doing it all by myself. At first I thought this would help prepare me for a future deployment, I would learn later that I was completely wrong. As Murphy’s Law would have it, many, many things went wrong from an invasion of flying ants in the house (um....did you guys know that some ants fly?! This was news to me!), to a nest, made by some rather unfriendly hornets, on my porch light right by the front door.

PSA: Hornets are not fond of any disturbance to their community. Obviously, right? So if they make a home by any of the main exits of your house, you should accept that you’ll never be going outside again.

The list of inconveniences goes on to include things NOT insect related. But the worst part was my husband missing our first anniversary. When he finally returned, I was completely exhausted, not to mention in awe of military spouses and how hard they work in the background.

Almost 4 months after my husband came home, he was out the door again and on his way

to Afghanistan for his second deployment, my first deployment. This time, the “goodbye” was different and I knew everything I had gone through in those 6 weeks (you know, the ones I thought would prep me for deployment? HA!) would pale in comparison to this.

The struggles I faced during the 9 months he was gone hit harder than I thought possible: watching our daughter hit milestones and not having my husband there to share in that joy, having a death in the Family and no husband around to blanket me with love and comfort when I needed it most, trying to navigate a marriage with someone on the other side of the world and spending yet another anniversary alone. The stresses of every day life, constant responsibilities and doing it all myself became very overwhelming.

There are so many things military spouses try to balance: kids, marriage, bills, school, work, health, friendships and somewhere in there, if they’re lucky, time for themselves. The expectations of a military spouse are ever changing and huge sacrifices are made on their behalf for the benefit of their Family. But they don’t do it because they have to, they do it because they want to. They wear their military spouse badges proudly and love their Families deeply. It’s never easy kissing your Soldier goodbye or waving to friends, that have become Family, as you set off on yet another adventure that the military has chosen for you.

But if military spouses are one thing, they are adaptable. They roll with the punches, even if sometimes they want to punch back. It’s not something everyone can do; it takes true strength and courage to stand behind a Soldier. To all of the military spouses out there, you may only have one day on the calendar but every day should celebrate you, your selflessness, your strength, your dedication and your ability and willingness to “hold down the fort.” Our Soldiers are heroes but you are their heart. This is my salute to you.

Thank you for all you do for your Family, your Soldier and the military community.

And a note to my fellow Soldiers: Should you find yourself fortunate enough to have someone that’s willing to follow you anywhere, leaving behind everything they love or have worked to establish, let them know what that means to you.

Remind them that you support them and their goals just as they support you and yours. Thank them for the love they give, the sacrifices they make and the weight of the world they so graciously carry while you’re gone. Candice Boston, Family and MWR Marketing As a military Family, we become accustom to many things in life being temporary. We learn to adjust with little time to plan and create ways to accommodate for lack of space and time.

With these skills, planting a garden this spring might be a great way to set some roots in our ever changing world.

Though having a garden can be rewarding, it comes with some challenges. One of the most common obstacles is simply a lack of space. Fortunately, there are numerous methods to save space and still grow your own food. If you have a sunny window sill or a balcony, you can grow a variety of fresh vegetables potted in plant pots or containers.

For gardeners with a little more yard space, you may want to consider raised garden beds. This is a great option for growing small plots of veggies and flowers. They keep pathway weeds from your garden soil, prevent soil compaction, provide good drainage and serve as a barrier to pests such as slugs and snails. The sides of the beds keep your valuable garden soil from being eroded or washed away during heavy rains. In many cases, gardeners are able to plant earlier in the season because the soil is warmer and better drained when it is above ground level.

Gardening is a wonderful outdoor activity to participate in as a family and with others. Kids love digging in the dirt, so get them out to help you with specific projects, like digging a hole for a new plant or pulling up all the weeds they can find in a

particular area. This is also a great opportunity for dad to show off his handy work while building you a garden box or two.

FISHING IN THE WEST TEXAS DESERT Believe it or not, there is fishing in this part of Texas. In fact, there are many lakes to choose from, such as Odessa Lake, Ascarate Lake, San Felipe, Monahans Perch Pond, Midland Wadly Barrow, and more. These are all Community Fishing Lakes in the Big Bend region of Texas (West Texas). A Community Fishing Lake (CFL) is defined as a public impoundment 75 acres or smaller located totally within an incorporated city limits or public park, or any impoundment lying totally within the boundaries

of a state park. Many CFL’s are stocked annually with channel catfish and/or rainbow trout.

The largest, Ascarate, is home to trout (winter), catfish (summer), large mouth bass, black bass, sun perch, blue gill, carp, shad, crappie, hybrid sunfish and minnows. The Ascarate Park is the largest public-use recreational park in El Paso County, at 448 total acres.

Your tasks may vary, but spring cleaning typically includes cleaning out the flower beds, organizing your garage, cleaning out closets, de-cluttering, and organizing your belongings.

Sounds fun, right?

Unfortunately, not everyone enjoys cleaning up and organizing. However, spring cleaning doesn’t have to be a fruitless chore. In fact, de-cluttering your home can easily become a money-making endeavor if you play your cards right. All it requires is some effort, organizational skills and a Saturday afternoon to turn your unwanted belongings into cold, hard cash.

Once you’ve decided which of your belongings will get the heave-ho, it’s time to start planning your sale. Start by picking a date. For those of you who live on Fort Bliss, you may want to consider having your sale during the Post-wide yard sale on April 18 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The installation does all of the marketing for you and always draws an enormous crowd.

If you aren’t able to participate in the Post-wide yard sale, any Saturday is a great choice to plan your sale. Here are a few things to keep in mind to maximize your profits.

Clean. Nothing will make your shoppers disappear faster than trying to sell items that are dirty, dusty and unkempt. To avoid losing out on potential sales, take the time to clean and dust each item you’re selling.

Price realistically. Sure, you would like to get full retail price for your used items, but will you? More than likely, not.

Unfortunately, the resale value of used items is only a small percentage of what they cost new.

Advertise. If you are participating in the Post-wide yard sale, this part will be done for you. If not, it is important to let people know it’s happening to get as many people as possible to visit your sale. Start by putting a free ad on Craigslist and other like pages. After that, take the extra time to create and post outdoor signs that will help guide people to your door. Remember, the sales that get the most traffic are the ones people know about.

Spring cleaning may not be your cup of tea, but the prospect of earning some extra cash might just be the motivation you need to get started. So, sort through your belongings and decide what you can live without. Holding a yard sale is hard work, but it almost always pays off by freeing up extra room in your home and adding to your bottom line.

Candice Boston and U.S. Army MWR Marketing As the weather starts to warm up, being outside is probably starting to seem more and more appealing. After a winter feeling cooped up and enjoying all of the baked goods and holiday treats, it’s time to get out and get some fresh air and exercise. This spring, take advantage of some of these outdoor recreation ideas.

Cycling: For low impact aerobic exercise, hop on a bike and head out for a ride. You’ll get a great interval workout if you choose hilly terrain, or you can take a longer, more leisurely ride with Family and friends. If you’re interested in a group ride, Outdoor Recreation always has trail rides planned for all experience levels. (See page 30 for calendar.) If your balance isn’t good enough for you to feel comfortable on a bike, get started on a stationary bike in the fitness center. As you become more comfortable with this, you can begin to transition into cycling outdoors.

Walking or Jogging: One of the easiest activities to get started with is walking or jogging.

All you need is a pair of athletic shoes and at least 10 minutes to head outside. Start slow, with just as much activity as you can handle. Your legs will be sore at first, but as you build strength, you’ll be able to both increase the duration of your activity and start increasing your speed as

well. Then, plan to participate in one of more than 10 runs every year organized by the Fort Bliss Sports and Fitness program.

Swimming: Especially if you’re retired or have mobility problems, like joint pain, many types of exercise can be painful.

Swimming is one of the best exercises for you. The water provides resistance without putting stress on joints, allowing you to get a significant workout. Try swimming laps for cardio exercise or signing up for a water aerobics class to work in some water strength training as well.

Replica Aquatic Center located at 5035 Dickman Road offers Water Aerobics on Mon/Wed from 10-11 a.m. and on Tue/Thu from 5:15-6:15 p.m. The Aquatics Training Center located on 20733 Constitution Ave. offers a Saturday class from 9:30-10:30 a.m.

Sports: If you want to exercise without feeling like you’re exercising, playing a team sport can be the best way to do this.

You’ll often get so caught up in the game and competition that you’ll forget how hard you’re working. See page 35 to find intramural leagues or Commander’s Cup Sports you can join.

Stacy Lehr, Certified Spin Instructor Indoor cycling is a group exercise class performed on stationary bikes. During the class, the instructor simulates hill-climbing, sprints, and races. You will be motivated by the instructor, the people around you, and the music. Don’t be intimidated: Yes, there will be a few seasoned individuals in your class, but there will be new riders and people of all different ages, sizes, and levels. Don’t let the fear of the unknown stop you from trying an awesome workout. Remember that anything new is always intimidating.

Benefits of indoor cycling include increased cardiovascular strength, lowered stress levels, increased muscular endurance, large number of calories burned and low impact exercise.

What you need for your first class: • Show up at least 10 minutes prior to class and introduce yourself to the instructor so they can assist you in proper bike set up.

Notify the instructor if you are recovering from any injuries so they can help you

modify if necessary.

• Sweat wicking clothing such as shorts and tee shirts. Padded biking shorts provide a more comfortable ride, but are not mandatory.

• Tennis shoes with a stiff sole are best if you don’t have biking shoes. The Kieser bikes have a dual pedal, one side accepts SPD clip bike shoes and the other has a basket to secure your regular tennis shoes.

• Water. Hydration during physical activity is critical.

• A hand towel to wipe that sweat out of your eyes.

Not convinced that indoor cycling may be for you? I challenge you to try just three classes. There are countless benefits of indoor cycling in addition to the ones listed above.

Sarrah Morgan, Family and MWR Marketing Mickelsen Community Library launches its Read to the Rhythm! Summer Reading Program on June 15. During the next two months, the library will host a range of free activities for children, teens, and adults that encourage and support a love of reading. Participants also can win prizes for reaching their reading goals. The program concludes on July 25 with an End of Program Celebration scheduled for August 1 from 9:30 a.m.11:30 a.m.

“We’ve planned a wonderful program

for kids to make the library a great place to read, learn, and discover what’s available for their enjoyment,” said Library Technician Melissa Biglane, “The Summer Reading Program is a great way to have fun while improving reading comprehension.”

Themed events include making instruments and live musical performances.

Prizes come in the form of tiered reading incentives and a prize bag at the conclusion of the program.

There’s also a serious side to summer reading. Research has shown that reading over the summer prevents summer read-

ing loss. “Studies also indicate students who read recreationally outperformed those who don’t. Inappropriate language, aggressive behavior, taunts or a disregard for their authority can all put a damper on the event. It’s okay to respectfully disagree with an authority at a recreational event, but keep your interactions civil and don’t create a hostile situation.

Use Respectful Language: Children and Families are often present at MWR events -- particularly youth sporting events. Their right to a clean, safe experience needs to be respected at all times. Use respectful language free of any profanities to preserve these events as an appropriate gathering for Army Families.

Leave Your Emotions on the Field: Regardless of the outcome of a game, don’t lose your perspective once the event is over. Shake hands with the opponent and leave your emotions and frustrations on the field as you walk off. By enjoying the event for what it is and being mindful of your surroundings, you can save yourself from any post-event conflict and ensure everyone has a good time.

In an effort to recognize their hard work and applaud the courage of military children, the Department of Defense (DOD) has deemed April as the Month of the Military Child (MOMC). The Month of the Military Child Observance is an opportunity to thank children for their support and recognize the important role they play in contributing to the strength of the Army Family. Miyo Saito, SKIESUnlimited For the little Zorro in every child, Fort Bliss is introducing the Olympic sport of fencing. The program is an exclusive combat/martial art discipline that will provide fundamental fencing footwork, hand drills and a sword fighting experience to the military community.

Fencing is the sport of swordplay. It began thousands of years ago as a way of training soldiers to fight with swords and it eventually became a competitive sport.

In class, each child will have the opportunity to work with instructors in a small group setting, and practice drills with peers. Fencers learn good sportsmanship, self-discipline, gain quick reflexes and how to compete independently. They gain a sense of accomplishment when winning and learn to profit from their defeats. They learn to make complex decisions, analyze problems, and think fast on their feet.

The rules of the sport help foster a sense of chivalry and respect among all of the students. Most of all, it’s a lot of fun and qualifies for PE credit.

The program has the potential to advance to a competitive level for those fencers that

Support Services Army Family Action PLan Mon-fri, 8am-4pm The Army Family Action Plan provides Active and Reserve Component Soldiers, Army Civilians, Family members, Survivors, and Retirees a voice in shaping their standards of living by identifying issues and concerns for Army Senior Leadership resolution. Since its inception in 1983, the AFAP remains the only such partnership between a branch of the United States military and its constituents.

Issues can be submitted at the Garrison Army Community Service office or to a unit Family Programs liaison. The needs of the Army community remain in the forefront of Army Senior Leadership. AFAP is the primary tool to communicate the important issues facing Soldiers, Army Civilians, Families, Survivors, and Retirees.

Information provided through the AFAP process gives commanders and leaders insight into current satisfaction detractors, quality of life needs, and expectations of Army constituents. Leadership uses the information to effect changes that improve standards of living and support programs. These changes foster a satisfied, informed, and resilient Army Community.

ARMYVOLUNTEER WEEK Tephanie Hopper, Volunteer Corps. Manager In 1974, President Richard Nixon signed an executive order declaring that a week be dedicated to those who give their time to charity. Today that week is better known as National Volunteer Week. From April 12 – 18, Fort Bliss will continue this tradition of honoring volunteers for their service. The volunteers of our community embody the spirit of giving, shown throughout our country as they step up to the unique challenges faced within a military community. Though the challenges can sometimes be difficult, it is inspiring to see that volunteers are still committed to serving the Soldiers, Family members and Retirees. We are continually grateful for their dedication.

We are appreciative to the volunteers who are out during the wee hours of the night providing a supportive hug to the Families of deploying Soldiers and for the volunteer who is there to cheer on a Soldier as he returns when there is no Family there to do so. We are thankful to the volunteer who takes their experience and knowledge

Survivor Outreach Services Mon-fri, 8am-4pm Losing a loved one is an especially difficult time for those left behind. In addition to the grief the Family will suffer, they will also be faced with several issues and questions about a life built around the Army. Some of these will be addressed immediately by the Casualty Assistance Officer (CAO), but some will not surface for many months or years - long after the Casualty Assistance process has ended. Survivor Outreach Services (SOS) can help. SOS is a holistic, multi-agency approach to delivering services specifically to surviving Family Members.

The friendly staff at SOS is there to assist surviving Family Members with whatever issues they might have. Their services are also offered to Retirees and non-active duty incidents as well.

Their mission is...“To embrace and reassure Survivors that they are continually linked to the Army Family through a unified support program that enables them to remain an important part of the Army Family for as long as they desire.”

Victim advocates provide clear, accurate information on the available avenues for reporting domestic abuse, child abuse, and sexual assault. Victim advocates provide essential support, liaison services and care to the victim. Responsibilities include providing crisis intervention, referral and ongoing non-clinical support, including information on available options and resources to assist the victim in making informed decisions about the case.

Victim advocate services will continue until the victim states support is no longer needed. To speak with a Victim Advocate, call the Family Advocacy Program during normal business hours or the Domestic Violence Hotline after hours or on weekends. You are not alone.

The Army offers a complete program of parent education and support services of which the New Parent Support Program (NPSP) is a part.

All Army installations provide services that include health counselling provided by Army Community Health Nurses (CHN), as well as parent education classes and play mornings.

These services target Families with children, 0-3 years of age. Participation in any of these activities is strictly voluntary and there are no time limits imposed on duration of service but Families generally stay involved at this level for 4-6 months. Referrals for NPSP services are accepted via self-referral, health professionals, and command.

The Army Family Advocacy Program coordinates and provides numerous programs, services and activities that support our Families. Exceptional Family Member Program Mon-fri, 7:30am-4:30pm The Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) is a mandatory enrollment program that works with other military and Civilian agencies to provide a comprehensive, coordinated, multiagency approach for community support, housing, medical, educational, and personnel services to Families with special needs. The EFMP is a Department of the Army program which functions under the provisions of Army Regulation (AR) 608-75. It is designed to assist active-duty personnel during the reassignment process by taking into account Exceptional Family Members (EFM) with special physical, emotional, developmental or intellectual needs.

In a dual military Family, both Soldiers must be enrolled. Enrollment is based on the medical and education requirements of Family members of active duty personnel and must be updated every three years or if the condition(s) changes.
