At Sherratts Wood CIC we offer inspirational activities for adults of all ages we offer person centred activities and opportunities to a broad customer base with varying degrees of support needs including but not limited to: ✓ Learning Disabilities ✓ Physical Disabilities ✓ Mental Health Issues ✓ Epilepsy ✓ Brain Injuries ✓ Dementia/ Alzheimer’s Customers predominantly choose Sherratts wood through word of mouth however, we also transition many individuals from further education using a structured programme of visits Our trained and professional team work on close partnership with the individual and their families to formulate outcomes and ways of working that promote independence and teach new skills that assist in day to day life. Together we create a unique ‘Passport’ that is regularly reviewed and updated with written and photographic evidence of the progress being made. The ‘Passport’ also contains any barriers or support requirements an individual may have in order to promote consistency of service over our 3 venues.

Bespoke courses: We listen very carefully to our customers and regularly write courses to enable them to develop their skills in particular areas of interest. We have recently offered courses in: ✓ Animal husbandry ✓ Garden machinery maintenance ✓ Growing farm to fork ✓ Independent living skills ✓ Fitness and nutrition ✓ Gardening ✓ Woodwork We are always aspirational and striving to move our customers forward so, in addition to writing courses, we also bring in outside professionals that offer courses in many other areas for our customer’s e.g ✓ Photography ✓ Environment ✓ Drama
Activities offered in: Life skills Customers are encouraged to take part in activities preparing healthy and nutritional meals on a daily basis at all the venues and is an integral part of the day’s activities. Customers gain knowledge in: ✓ Food preparation and cooking simple healthy nutritional meals ✓ Stock rotation ✓ Understanding the importance of best before dates which offers knowledge around numeracy skills. ✓ Baking and following recipes (all recipes are offered pictorially to empower those customers without literacy skills) ✓ Food Hygiene We also understand, and some customers have voiced their difficulty around money skills. With this in mind staff have designed an activity programme which enables
customers to gain confidence in this area which includes: ✓ Coin recognition ✓ Coin value ✓ Promotion of simple numeracy skills ✓ Delivery of skill in the community Sherratts Wood sites have washing machines and support customers to recognise laundry signs on clothing and bedding to empower and enable individuals be independent and confident
Being part of and accessing the community There are many activities that help and support our customers practice skills to enable them when accessing the community, being able to access the community offers individuals increased independence.

All sites have polytunnels in which we grow our own fruit and vegetables, customers can chose activities that enable them to gain knowledge in:
For those customers who enjoy ‘treading the boards’, we often work with local theatres and groups and regularly hold small performances. Customers are supported and given opportunities to learn to play instruments such as guitar, drums, keyboard and various percussion instruments. Customers can also enjoy making and editing video’s that promote our services to others and compose the music to accompany it.

Staff have qualifications in health and fitness so are able to offer all individuals person centred fitness programmes, customers also access the community and have opportunities to use gym facilities. For those individuals who do not enjoy the traditional sports games, venues also offer activities such as rambling, orienteering and Geo cash, this is a wonderful way of getting moving in a gentle social fashion. Sherratts Wood CIC proudly supported the Special Olympics in 2017 and were able to go and watch the inspirational individuals in Sheffield.
Art and crafts and enterprise opportunities Arts and crafts provides individuals the opportunity to be social and practice staying on task. We often use art and craft to promote our enterprise initiatives. Recently customers have made and sold Christmas decorations, Christmas cakes, flower baskets, hanging baskets, poppy broaches and wooden I pad stands. Art and craft builds on skills such as hand eye co-ordination and fine motor skills which are easily transferable to activities in the kitchen or gardening. It may also provide a starting block to an independent small business opportunity, customers could initiate from home. Importantly it provides a safe, welcoming environment for individuals to talk, share a joke, ideas and generally enjoy each other’s company.
Animal care and husbandy

Our animal care comes in various degrees according to the venue. At the farm venue in Leigh, we are able to offer large animal care, caring for animals such as Saddle back pigs, Ryland and Portland sheep, pigmy goats, horses and chicken and ducks. Care for these rare breeds includes:
The internet, computers and mobile devices are an important and integral part of today’s life and our customers are no different. In out IT suites, we assist individuals in gaining knowledge to competently and safely access these services as well as practical applications for gaining employment and traditional letter writing, skills gained in:
✓ Cleaning and mucking out ✓ Feeding the correct amount according to the season ✓ Breeding new stock ✓ Producing stock to eat ✓ General maintenance of enclosures As well as our large animals all venues have a number of domestic pets such as rabbits and guinea pigs. Customers find interaction with these ‘furry friends’ to be relaxing and enjoyable. Many of our customers are pet owners and with skills learnt at the farm they are able to apply the importance of animal welfare into their own lives and homes, topics covered are: ✓ Responsibility of pet ownership ✓ Pet cleanliness/ hygiene/ feeding/ watering/ breeding ✓ Correct preferred habitat ✓ Grooming and handling

Social networking A huge part of our work is to encourage our customers to develop a positive, safe and appropriate social network. Making friends for life is a key element of our focus as we help customers to understand having a sustainable network of people who they can rely upon for support into the future is part of having an ordinary life. With this in mind Sherratts Wood staff team often organise social events in the evenings, such as a curry night, bowling or a trip to the cinema. It allows individuals to socialise with familiar support and extend their social and communication skills.

The Farm

At our 20 acre Staffordshire farm venue, customers can explore all aspects of farm life throughout the seasons as well as getting involved in our extensive range of indoor and outdoor activities including sports, art, cooking, life skills, IT skills, gardening and horticulture. With a range of high quality indoor spaces including commercial kitchen and learning hub, the farm venue offers an unrivalled opportunity to develop skills for life in a unique way.
Minster Hall is in the retail heart of the city centre and overlooked by the Cathedral which enables customers to be an active part of the local community. Minster Hall is a purpose built centre with a large sports hall, fully equipped music room, IT suite, dance studio and kitchen / café area. One of its unique gems is the large secluded private garden with polytunnel and disabled access to the dam and Beacon Park.
Located in Burton- on –Trent the centre promotes a social feeling with a large hall situated just inside the door of this purpose built centre. Like the Lichfield site Burton enables attending customers to extend their skills with IT suites, independent living suite, life skills facilities, craft room and customer designed and decorated music room. Private disabled accessible garden with polytunnel and a changing place ‘style’ facilities with hoist, changing bed and shower.
