Dear Friends and Partners, The last couple of years have been eventful for the vanillin industry. It is about time to summarise and tell you about all the many exciting things that have happened in our little but global vanillin world.

You will find some interesting information and updates, but also a couple of interesting news items.

Some of them surprised even us, like the vanillin that is made from a beaver’s back.

However, we have developed our business striving to be your category captain for vanillin with a range of products that covers a lot of different needs in the food- and in the food and flavour and fragrance industries.

Moreover, we have pointed out the outstanding capabilities in terms of sustainability of our core offer EuroVanillin Supreme, vanillin ex-lignin.

Sustain It becomes obvious that natural raw materials are very expensive, have limited access and hardly stand for constant quality and foreseeable price.

As a viable alternative, sustainable raw materials might take over this position as contemporary materials: efficiently produced, plannably accessed, safe and made from renewable sources: in the case of EuroVanillin Supreme, wood.

Around a year ago Borregaard launched the new webpage www.sustainablevanillin.com.

On this page we summarise the main arguments that make EuroVanillin Supreme the

Manufacturers who switch to raw materials that are better suited to environmentallyconscious customers want to show this on the packaging of their products. There are many examples available for reference, such as for sustainable fishing, sustainable cultivation of tea, coffee or palm oil or labels that show that a manufacturer takes care in terms of fair trade or ecological ingredients.

EuroVanillin Supreme is made from wood, while the majority of the globally available vanillin is made from crude oil.

Based on input from our customers we developed a logo that shows where sustainable vanillin is used. This logo will be printed on all our boxes and sales material, but more importantly: it is available to our customers for use on their packaging, when EuroVanillin Supreme is part of the ingredients.

50 year anniversary In April last year Borregaard’s Eurovanillin Supreme factory celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Design capacity has been doubled since the beginning, due to optimisation of the process.

Borregaard is on Sedex Borregaard takes ethical standards seriously, in terms of both product and people.

Fulfilling these standards is also increasingly becoming a prerequisite for supplying the global food industry.

Food safety certification This summer, Borregaard’s vanillin and ethyl vanillin manufacturing in Norway was certified in accordance with the international food safety standard FSSC22000.

We are proud to maintain high standards when it comes to food and product safety.

Borregaard’s guidelines for food safety place strict requirements on the entire organisation, from senior management to each individual employee.

Borregaard is the only manufacturer of timber-based vanillin in the world.

Our timber-based vanillin is unbeatable when it comes to sustainability compared to vanillin from petrochemical sources. Having obtained FSSC certification, it is now also the newest and best vanilla flavouring agent.

Sustainability is an important trend in the food industry. More and more food manufacturers are demanding sustainable raw materials in addition to food safety certification.

1year anniversary On October 18th Borregaard celebrated the first anniversary of its listing on the Oslo Stock Exchange.

Since then Borregaard has no longer been a member of the Orkla group, but an independent company.

The price per share has increased by around 30% since launch.
