Clara, you beaut

By Robbie Parkes “I think things are going to be a little different, but it’s good different.

It’s everything I ever wanted,” says Clara van Wel on how her life will change following the win everybody is talking about.

With nearly one million viewers across the nation watching, Clara was crowned the winner of TV ONE’s popular television show, New Zealand’s Got Talent on Sunday night.

Talking to The Sun yesterday, Clara said she does not think the reality of the win will ever set in.

“It really is just a dream experience.”

She admits the past couple of days have been extremely “crazy,” with her conducting interviews, recording songs, and meeting lots of different people.

While the success may influence her immediate future, the Blenheim schoolgirl is staying grounded.

“I’m still Clara,” she said.

She intends to remain in Marlborough and finish school, but obviously her future in music is still a major focus.

“Next year we’ll start working on an album hopefully, all that is pretty wicked.”

She said the ideals instilled in her by her family has helped greatly.

The Blenheim woman was diagnosed with Spino-cerebella Ataxia just over four years ago - a condition affecting the part of the brain associated with co-ordination, making it harder to do simple things, such as talking, walking, seeing, and using your hands.

For the past 14 years, Ms Streeter has decorated every corner of her home, and this year, she is lifting her game.

“I thought if I put a bit more effort in I could ask for help.”

“It’s becoming harder and harder so I thought I should raise money while I can.”

The money raised is going towards a local organisation,

MDA - Muscular Dystrophy Association. The organisation supports Ms Streeter once a month by coming to her home and helping her, and she wants to give back.

According to Ms Streeter, having the condition has made her stop and think about what she does in life.

“Even though the Christmas decorations can be hard work, the enjoyment I get from it and the enjoyment others get from it makes it worthwhile.”

“You have to look at what you can do, not what you can’t do.”

Ms Streeter is excited about this year’s decorations.

Every year she has a different theme, and this year it’s red and white.

She has grown her collection, and this year Santa will be

there for the children. Ms Streeter has made contact with the Toy Library, and there will be toys out in the garden beside the reindeer.

“There are things that the kids can touch and play with, while the adults linger and look at the details.”

Her friends and family have all helped her to decorate her home, either by sending her ornaments during the year or by helping her to create displays and craft decorations.

“There are a lot of people in this world that have conditions, and it’s what you do with what you’re given.

I could stay at home, but I do what I do.”

MP Colin King’s rating rises

The newsletter has been assessing and rating how politicans perform in the House and their electorate annually for eight years

Last year Mr King was given a rating of two out of 10, down from his 2010 rating of 3.5.

The newsletter commented: “A diligent MP in the House and on select committee but really needs to do more.”

This year Mr King’s

rating has risen to four and Trans Tasman commented: “Destined to be forever one of Parliament’s lonely foot soldiers.”

The newsletter’s highest rated politician for 2012 was Attorney General Christopher Finlayson (eight out of 10) who beat off nearest rivals Prime Minister John Key and

Green Party co-leader Russel Norman.

The lowest rated in the Cabinet was Education Minister Hekia Parata on two, down from 6.5 last year.

School to close after 139 years

By Chris Tobin In a decision described as being “heart-breaking,” Koromiko School is to close.

In breaking the news yesterday, board chairperson Simon Tripe said it had become clear that the school role would drop to five next year. The present roll is 17.

With this in mind, the board of trustees approached the Ministry of Education requesting a review about a possible closure.

Last week the Minister of Education informed the board that the school would close on January 27 although the last day of teaching would be December 14.

Mr Tripe said the school received an excellent ERO report earlier in the year. However if the roll dropped to five as expected, the school would have to become sole charge which the board considered was not in the children’s best interests.

“It’s a sad decision but with the roll dropping we didn’t feel as a board that the children would get the education they deserved. The current level of education is excellent but we felt it

wouldn’t continue.”

The school employs principal Karen O’Donnell-Chapman, one fulltime teacher, a part-time relief teacher and a teacher aide.

“It’s a wonderful school,” principal since 2008, Ms O’Donnell-Chapman, said.

“We’ve got really lucky children here who’ve had a wonderful education but it wouldn’t be the same in a sole charge school.”

Ms O’Donnell-Chapman said she was considering various options for her future while permanent teacher Donna-Marie Matthews had decided to take a study option. A teacher aide has left to work in Australia.

Present pupils are expected to attend other nearby schools at Picton and Tua Marina next year.

Mr Tripe whose children Nicholas, 11, and Jessica, 9, are the fourth generation to attend the school, said no decision had been made regarding the land or facilities. This would be determined by the Ministry of Education.

The school opened in 1873 and at its peak in the late 1980s, early 1990s, had a roll of 70.

Santa lights up Picton Story and photos by Annabelle Latz It was perfect conditions for the Picton Santa Parade on Saturday afternoon, as crowds filled the streets and waterfront in their festive attire.

There were 25 floats involved in the event, including the Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade, Picton Police, Conservation Kids, Waikawa Bay School, Edwin Fox, Picton Play Centre, and Picton Kindergarten.

Waikawa Bay School float was awarded best community float of the parade, in second place was Picton Kindergarten, and third was Conservation Kids.

“It’s just wonderful to see the community bring their decorated floats.

And it’s great to see all the children, which is what it’s all about.”

Beryl said float numbers were slightly down on last year, as some regular groups could not make this year’s parade.

“But there were some new groups too,” said Beryl.

Beryl wanted to thank Nicholls Freight who donated the truck as the stage for the foreshore, Marlborough Lines, Port Marlborough and Classic Hits, and the whole community for supporting the event.

Waikawa Boating Club’s annual beach clean has produced both good and bad news on the state of beaches in Queen Charlotte Sound.

Organiser Nicky Jenkins was particularly pleased with reports that beaches close to club moorings were free of rubbish but unhappy with the quantities of plastics, rope, and glass found in some other bays.

Allan Graham on La Vita Bella reported Missionary Bay was largely clear but Jon Haack and the team on Eliza filled bags of rubbish from the beach in Double Bay. Waikawa Club’s safety boat Blue Peter checked out Hitaua Bay where Mike Underwood and the crew collected a bagful of polypropylene line, polystyrene, glass light bulbs, plastic bottles and, the find of the day, a fishing

rod.

Strengthening winds forecast for Saturday were not enough to deter the nine boats and more than 40 club members who set out to check beaches throughout the Sounds and Tory Channel to gather up any rubbish that was found there.

The smaller boats and yachts took on the inner sounds where Max Rowley’s group from Montezuma spent some time in Ngakuta Bay collecting plastic and glass bottles and other rubbish from around the foreshore while Chris Williams on Welcome Home, and Kerry Kirk with Bright Eyes II made a family day of it in Flipper, Kaipakirikiri and Kumutoto.

Some of the larger launches went out for the weekend and targeted the outer sounds.

John Jackson and Fortuna Lights checked the southern bays while Doug Smith and Ann Shrimpton on Southern Lady, working with Julie and Paul Andrews on Wee Ju took on Ship Cove, Resolution and Endeavour Inlet.

Murray Bishell and Georgie Girl worked down Tory Channel.

“The beach clean is something the club does every year” said Nicky Jenkins.

“It’s a good reminder to everyone, boaties, campers and residents that the Sounds are not a rubbish tip.

“What’s lost or thrown into the water or left on the foreshore eventually ends up contaminating the beaches.

Care is needed to take all rubbish out and leave nothing behind but our footprints.”

Good enough to eat

Throughout the competition Clara sang and performed her own original compositions, three of which she has been recording in studios up in Auckland after signing a contract with Sony.

Where Do You Find Love?, her first single, will be released on Friday.

Acoustic versions of two of her other original songs: Between The Lines and Lines You Traced have also been recorded.

For winning the competition, Clara also received a cash prize of $100,000, the recording contract and a Toyota Corolla.

Clara’s outstanding talent and achievements have already rippled through the New Zealand music world.

The New Zealand’s Got talent judges were overwhelmed

Even at 13-years-old, Clara was a prolific performer and songwriter, winning the 2011 Ma rlborough Smokefree Rockquest, wowing judges with two of her original songs ‘Living a Life’ and ‘Closer’.

She won Marlborough’s Got Talent competition in 2010 with her own song, Crocodile Tears, and took out the top spot in Marlborough Stars in their Eyes last year for her performance as American musician Rickie Lee Jones.

By Chris Tobin A week-long police blitz on drivers using cellphones while driving has seven people receiving infringement notices in Marlborough.

Barbara Dunn, Tasman police communications manager, said it was good news for Marlborough.

“The general comment was that compliance had been pretty good given the number of vehicles on the road,” she said.

Two further complaints were also being followed up.

Police used techniques such as spotters to look for people using cellphones.”

The blitz coincided with the third anniversary of the introoduction of legistation banning mobile phone use while driving and ran from last Monday until Sunday.

In the the year from July 2011 to June 2012 police issued 311 infringement notices to drivers using cellphones in the Tasman district. A total of 87 were issued in Marlborough, 27 on the West Coast and 197 were issued in the Nelson Bays area.

The legislation allows the use of hands-free mobile phones, but it is recommended by police that drivers either switch phones off while driving, or pull over to make or receive calls.

People caught breaking the law are issued an infringement fee of $80 and 20 demerit points.

Garden tour nets $1000

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Coralie Holdaway could not get the smile off her face, when she learned the fundraising success of the garden tour at Joyce and Ian Cattermole’s Scott St property nearly 10 days ago.

Over 100 people ventured into the garden, named Lomani Au Garden, which is Fijian for Love Me Garden.

It raised just over $1000 for the Simply the Breast dragon boating team to head up to the national competition in April next year in Rotorua.

“To have people like Jocelyn and Ian step up and raise that money to help us is amazing.

How lucky are we?!”

Comments written by people as they left included comments like ‘A little bit of paradise,’ ‘Quite special,’ and ‘Thank you for sharing.’

Jocelyn said they thoroughly enjoyed it, and want to do it again next year.

Jocelyn was the only person who answered a request for fundraising help for the group.

“All it took was one phone call,” she said.

O’Brien finishes second at Oceania

By Robbie Parkes Braedon O’Brien’s luggage was a little bit heavier on his f light home to New Zealand last night, having just won silver at the World Ta ek wondo Fe d e r a t ion Oceania Championships in the Gold Coast at the weekend.

The Marlborough 17-yearold took out second place in the Kyorugi Junior under 73kg weight division at the Australasian competition.

“It went pretty good,” he said.

He ha s enjoye d a bit of R&R the last couple of days, recuperating from the weekend’s win.

Bradeon faced Tahiti in the first round, winning 8-5.

He then went on to beat New Caledonia 5-1 in the second round, but faced a tough Australian opponent in the finals, losing the match 5-11 in a closely-fought battle.

Colin O’Brien, Braedon’s fat her a nd Renwick Taekwondo instructor, said his son undertook a huge effort.

He said Tahiti for instance, were “well prepared,” after receiving a large amount of sponsorship and training in France.

The Nelson-based trio returned home to Moenui in the Pelorus Sound for three weeks in September to work on an album of new songs, wanting to create a “Marlborough Sounds vibe” to their music.

It was here that the band came up with their song ‘Focus Harder,’ and entered it into an online competition on The Audience website, which showcases new and upcoming New Zealand music.

The song with the most plays, shares and votes at the end of the month wins the grant.

‘Focus Harder,’ competed with 486 other songs, and held the number one position on the chart for most of November.

The grant will now be used to record ‘Focus Harder’ in a professional recording studio, probably in Auckland, as well as producing a high quality music video.

Josh said they have already been approached by a couple of Auckland studios.

“The fact we’ve only been together as this new band for a couple of months, it’s such a huge boost.”

Josh, Matt, and Sam had played as RBYM since starting the band at school for the Smokefreerockquest.

The name change comes with a move in musical direction, that has already proven successful.

“Recommended by your Mum was a Rockquest band,” said Josh.

“And it got to the point where we were trying to take our music in a more serious way.”

Josh said they will always call themselves a Nelson-Marlborough band, but they are ready to move if necessary.

“A lot of people have said, eventually we’re going to have to make a move somewhere.

“It’s hard to get the connections with the right people when you’re down here.”

Friday, October 30 At 5.55pm a 18-year-old male student was arrested for breaching the liquor ban when he was found drinking alcohol near the boat house theatre. He received a pre charge warning and was released.

Saturday, December 1 At 1.50am a 28-year-old male seasonal worker was held in custody for detox after being found intoxicated in a public place being incapable of looking after himself.

He was released when sober.

At 4.15pm a 26-year-old male orchard worker and a 23-year-old process worker were arrested at their Christmas function when a fight started over whether the night shift was better than the day shift.

They both received pre charge warnings and were released when

sober.

At 10.30 pm a 20-year-old male student was a r rest e d a f t er a alcohol fuelled domestic incident in Market St. The young male had chased his girlfriend and police managed to intervene before the incident got out of hand.

Sunday, December 2 At 1.50am a 22-year-old female was arrested in Scott St after an altercation between two groups of associates. When police arrived the two groups separated but the female tried to continue the fight.

She was arrested and charged with disorderly behaviour. She was released when sober and received a pre charge warning.

Unique musical show on tour

A unique musical show will be coming to the Nelson/Marlborough region as part of their New Zealand tour in February and March.

The Bond Street Bridge Explorers Club tour is inspired by the stories of Captain Scott and Sir Ernest Shackelton, and features indy-rock act Luckless.

The show is a combination of

spoken-word storytelling and original folk songs, as well as illustrations by Auckland artist Emily Carter, and photographs from the expeditions.

Songwriter, Sam Prebble, has assembled a band of folk artists from the Auckland area to retell the adventures.

The show will be performed in Nelson on February 3rd, and Wairua Valley on March 23rd.

Library planning required Public discussion about the future needs of Marlborough’s library services will need to get underway in the new year, says Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman.

District Libraries Manager Glenn Webster has advised the district council that rapid changes in technology and changing demands being made on public library services mean some long term planning was needed.

He noted the significant shift in the way people access information and that libraries were, increasingly, becoming community hubs.

Mayor Sowman said the council and the community would have to face up to some big decisions about the libraries in both Blenheim

and Picton as there were space constraints on both buildings.

In 2009 the council’s “Growing Marlborough” project brought together a large number of ideas and submissions from people about the future shape and design of Blenheim town centre, including advice that the council should be looking at relocating Blenheim’s Library.

At that time, the prevailing public view was that the Civic Theatre/Noel Leeming/Shoe Warehouse block in Queen Street would be a good site for a new library, Mr Sowman said.

The mayor said it was important to signal to the community that this discussion is looming even though any decisions would be a longer-term matter, he said.

Dear Ed, Your letter from Nicci Bergman, Marlborough Tours (Sun November 30) warrants mention.

I dare to suggest the reason tourists are deserving of an explanation is because they are drawn to comment as to what this (Para swamp) wasteland is all about.

Yes, I have stopped and read the signs from Fish and Game but it does not state, as does the regional spokesperson from this organisation, that they purposefully “poisoned the vegetation, created a wasteland for 20 years to come so they could shoot wild life next to SH1” This is not about beautification of a “last remaining wetland”, this is about

creating a small piece of conveniently located wetland so a selfish few can shoot things. Let’s be honest and get real.

Let’s also get rid of the “100% Pure” sign that reads “We are all Responsible” WE are not. Fish & Game are so it is their urgent responsibility to get their feet wet 20 years earlier than planned and clean the mess up.

The resulting firewood could be a welcome donation for their crimes to the elderly in the region who have financial difficulty keeping warm in winter.

Celebrating 20 years in Renwick Proudly family owned

On the 9th of December 1992, Anthony, Robyn and the van de Water family arrived in Renwick with the intention of opening an automotive restoration parts shop and mail order business.

Anthony had flatted in Renwick during 1973/74 and Robyn’s brother also lived locally, so they knew the area, the town, and the people reasonably well.

With the help of friends they converted the old High St petrol station and workshop into a small shop and warehouse area.

They initially stocked mainly rubber products for vintage and classic cars, specializing in pre-1970s English

vehicles.

Products such as windscreen, door and boot seals, pedal pads, bushes, grommets, gearbox and engine mounts were also included in their range.

Once they began trading they were asked to stock more and more items to cater for local needs. Stock levels and the variety of products has continued to expand since.

Having always been a family business, Anthony and Robyn’s children have grown up in the store and got their hands dirty when they needed to.

Anthony says having such loyal, dedicated staff and customers has made it a rewarding 20 years.

Adjusting to changing times Anthony and Robyn have seen a lot of changes over their 20 years of providing high-quality service.

Both agree the introduction of internet-based services have been the biggest catalyst for change, something they have embraced.

“The fax machine used to be our main machine,” jokes Robyn.

Anthony says they have adjusted to the changes over the years, but the focus is still the same - the customer.

“Customers are the same even over the internet,” adds Robyn.

Anthony says being based in Renwick has made them more accessible and has helped establish the area as a service hub to various industries and companies in the vicinity.

Timeless treasured jewellery Noel Herd has worked with jewellery since he was 15. Now 73, he still loves it. Sun reporter Anabelle Latz caught up with him.

Time never gets away on Noel Herd, despite the gentle ease he has taken to retirement over the past seven years.

At least a dozen clocks of all shapes and sizes decorate the walls and shelves of his workshop.

The former jeweller swapped his white coat for a blue one, and his shoes for his slippers seven years ago.

The craft which spanned the best part of sixty years, has transformed from a career into an art.

“I’m an artist in my own work, rather than a hobbyist.”

Noel, 73, who made the two wedding bands for him and his wife Annette, her engagement ring, and her eternity ring, said the craft of jewellery found him.

“And I’m still loving it, that’s amazing!”

He always wanted to be an upholster as a child, but after a week in the trade when he was 15, realised it wasn’t his calling.

“I feel you are guided in life.”

He had always been crafty; he made a clay model of a cow feeding his calf when he was 14 years old, and made jewellery from an early age.

“I used to make earrings for mum, out of paua shells I picked up off the beach.”

Noel couldn’t remember the exact year he started up Herd’s Nationwide Jewellers, but entered the trade when he was 15 years old.

That was at GD Beatson’s paua shell factory.

He loved his years at his jeweller shop, which was bought by Ray and Pam McCormick seven years ago.

“We were always just known as Herd’s Jewellers.”

“I remember doing a fivediamond ring for someone, it looked so good I didn’t want to give it away!” he said.

Noel has always loved platinum.

“A piece of platinum takes one heck of a lot of beating.”

He said it goes well with eighteen carat gold.

Noel tinkers away most days in his workshop; restoring clocks, fixing treasured pieces up for people, and still creating pieces of magic.

“It’s the love of my life, and I want to pass on the joys of making jewellery”.

“People will bring me a pile of stones and ask me to make stuff.”

“And some people get tired of their pieces of jewellery.”

Noel has made pieces that did not particularly appeal to him, but the person he was making it for, loved it.

“I think it’s good that everybody is different.”

He also teaches the art of jewellery making - passing on the skills of beating, hammering, and rolling.

“It’s the love of my life, and I want to pass on the joys of making

jewellery.

I have always shared my work.”

Noel said throughout his career, he has encountered many people who are reluctant to share their ideas, in fear of them being copied.

“I’ve always been clever at coming up with ideas, and I think you have got to share your ideas.”

He is not such a fan of the ‘bling’ culture that is popular at the moment, but said fashions come and go.

“I see fashions changing, like wide bands, then thin bands, then wide bands again.”

Noel provides a special service at Hospice Marlborough, where he takes people’s jewellery and restores it for resale.

“Once loved, this jewellery is ready to be loved again, by somebody else.

That’s always a good way to explain it.”

Noel has seen jewellery all around the world, and said New Zealand has some of the finest.

“I f I see somet h ing overseas that takes my eye, I would make something in my head and then make it when I get back home.”

No el love s t o s e e people’s treasured pieces of jewellery, and restore them into items that will last for years.

“I always class a nice piece of jewellery as an heirloom, one that I would like to go on through the ages.”

2012 WITHER HILLS FARM PARK POSSUM CONTROL PROGRAMME On Behalf of Marlborough District Council the public are advised that from 1st December/23rd December 2012, Valley Pest Control Ltd (VPC Ltd) will be undertaking possum control within the Wither Hills Farm Park.

The operation will cover an area of approximately 1000 hectares running west from Cobb Cottage Stream to The Taylor Pass landfill.

The operation will utilise live capture cages and leg hold traps as the control technique.

Live Capture cages will be set along side and within close proximity of the Farm Park walking tracks.

The cages and traps will be checked daily, and the public are asked to not interfere with the cages/traps or any captured animals.

During this timeframe, a quad/4x4 vehicle will be in daily use on and around the Farm Park Tracks.

Users of the Wither Hills Farm Park are advised that aerial spraying for weed control will soon commence.

The weed areas to be sprayed are generally in the upper reaches of each catchment and from Cob Cottage Road to Taylor Pass Road.

Activity is weather dependent and will usually be early morning until completed.

Warning signs will be erected at the start of operations and will remain in place until completed.

It is not intended to close access but it would be appreciated if users would restrict their activities to the lower levels of each catchment until operations are complete.

Latz blitzes field in marathon A stellar effort from Marlborough runners saw some top-place finishes at the third a n nua l New World Marlborough marathon at the weekend.

Conditions were good for Saturday’s race which began at Villa Maria Estate, travelling along the banks of the Taylor River, through vineyards to Omaka and finally back to the start.

Marlburian Jeremy McKenzie also took home the men’s half marathon title with an impressive 1hr 16min 2sec time.

Ma rlborough-bor n Christchurch runner Nicola Handley dominated in the women’s half marathon, making it home in 1hr 26min 30sec.

Blake Nicholson was first in the men’s 10km wheelchair event, while Garrick McKay took second.

Simon Ridder came second in the men’s 3039 5km run division.

Cowling takes title at Renwick Dunedin and Invercargill, his steady top five results throughout the other rounds took his tally to the top of the leader board, followed by Auckland’s Nigel Ross and Huntly’s Steve Williams coming in third.

Williams was the fastest man in Christchurch while Daryl Ainsly from Cromwell took victory both at his home track and Blenheim in his immaculate and very rapid hot orange Ford Mustang.

Local man, Rob Flood managed to finish 7th overall in the 25 strong field with fellow club members, Paul Cambie 20th and Mark Pengelly 23rd after completing only three of the rounds. A seized

starter motor prevented Flood from starting heat two on Sunday whilst Cambie had his engine catch ablaze, ending his evening.

Steve Williams kept the crowd on edge as he worked his way through the pole shuffle, gaining five spots on the grid setting him up for a second row start in the feature.

Ainsly and Adam Gent from Christchurch started the feature from the front, respectively holding first and second positions for the entire 20 laps as the rest of the pack challenged each other where Cowling could only find fourth but was enough to be crowned champion for 2012.
