Marlborough has outshone the rest of the country again - and this time it has been in the form of an ice cream.

Tip Top has announced that Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough are the number one scoop region in the country.

What’s more, the Renwick Dairy is the top cone ice-cream selling dairy in the region.

Having just received the news last week, Rata said it was an honour to be named by Tip Top. “The staff and I are over the moon.”

Pies loved by all

By Celeste Lodewyk Times may be changing but the infamous ‘Renwick Pies’ are not.

There are some recipes you just do not mess with, says Paul Adcock who alongside his brother runs the Renwick Meat Market.

The Renwick pie has been a favourite in our community for around 15-years, and most people would agree that it has reached icon status.

It has even won awards in the past including ‘Best Pie in Marlborough’.

The family owned and operated

butchery and bakery on High Street in Renwick is owned by Graeme and Bev Adcock and run by brothers Paul and Ian. The family built the butchery nearly 30-years ago where they initially began making the pies, before increasing the size of the business to incorporate the bakery.

Today, around 2000 pies are made fresh each day by the bakery’s ‘Pie Ladies’ and then sent out all over Marlborough including Kaikoura, Picton and as far as Nelson. “We pump a fair few out,� Paul laughs.

Trusted for generations

With around 10 f lavours including the popular ‘steak and cheese’, the popularity of the Renwick Pie comes down to the quality ingredients used, Paul says. “Dad has always believed that quality comes first and has always kept the recipes the same.�

And the secret behind the Renwick Pie recipe? “There is no secret, we make our own pastry, cook all the fillings from scratch and don’t cut any corners. “It’s a good quality and honest pie,� Paul says.

Tickets are now on sale for the 2011 Havelock Mussel Festival on Saturday March 19.

The Topp Twins and The Beat Girls will be performing, plus young young local band Remastered and other favourites, while families with young children will be catered for in NIWA Kidzone.

Celebrity cooks will create samples for the audience along with a taste of wine. Other features include fun, mussel-related competitions, on-water displays and food, wine and beer stalls, jewellery and craft stalls.

Lotto prize just claimed Blenheim’s Lucky Lotto winner, who took the $500,000 prize in the draw of Saturday October 22, picked up the prize at the Lotteries Commission office in Wellington yesterday.

The winner has asked for privacy, but did divulge that it came from a Lucky Dip ticket.

A Lotteries Commission spokesperson said the winner had checked the prizewinners on the internet on the Saturday night and saw it came from Blenheim.

The win was a big shock and it had taken time to figure out what to do.

The plan is to pay the mortgage off, then find investment opportunities. �They are taking time to make decisions to make sure it lasts,� the spokesperson said.

Hospital main entrance opens The new main entrance at Wairau Hospital was shown to the community yesterday, when maternity, paediatrics and outpatients departments were also opened for viewing from 4-6pm.

Project manager Martin Ridgway said patients and equipment from the paediatrics, and maternity areas would be shifted on Friday morning.

They had organised double staffing rosters in those areas for that day he said. Though final commissioning and checking were already completed, they would also have

contracting staff on standby in case of unexpected issues.

The new Outpatients and Oncology facilities will be operational from November 16 and the day stay unit and dental services areas will be relocated on November 17 he said.

A new reception area, staffed by volunteers, sits just beyond the entrance with its huge steel canopy. That stands five and a half metres tall and nine metres wide. It has been constructed of nine steel beams and weighs 1.622 tonnes.

Mr Ridgway said that with the opening of the new entrance,

the movement of traffic through Gate 3 would become one way, allowing for the drop off of patients before vehicles moved into the car parks.

There was now additional technology which saw Inpatient Ward doors shut until official visiting hours between 11.30 and 7.30pm, though access at other times could be arranged with staff , he said.

The hospital redevelopment moves into Stage 4 on Monday November 8.

That includes the refurbishment of the old paediatric and maternity wards for Mental

Health services, which have been scattered around the site in old houses and other buildings.

Their premises, and the new hospital kitchen, are due for completion by February 2011.

The new cafĂŠ for staff and visitors opposite the main entrance will be occupied by early December.

The end of Stage 4 will mark the completion of the two-year-long $46.7m project which was on track to meet time and budget deadlines, Mr Ridgway said. “Barring unexpected events.�

Karen Fisher, chair of the voluntary Hospital Liaison Group, says the resulting panels are â&#x20AC;&#x153;stunningâ&#x20AC;?.

She said the group had used their contacts and knowledge to access support in many aspects of the redevelopment, including the mobility courtyard in the assessment treatment and rehabilitation area, and the acquisition of framed art and photographs throughout the hospital.

That was supported by local photographers, artists and picture framers like John McGurr and Roger Thwaites as well as art dealers.

Members of the Woodworking Guild have provided special pieces, including a cross and tables for the chapel.

Committee members have also had input into the dĂŠcor and furnishing of the chapel and the planting of the gardens, while Mitre 10 had donated a fountain in the chapel garden.

redevelopment project has provided employment for hundreds of local tradespeople, with 140 on site at the peak of Stage 1 in May 2009.

The timber-framed hospital had required a lot of expertise, project manager Martin Ridgway said. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We made a conscious decision to use timber frame design to provide opportunities for local companies, with its use of local skills, at a time when the residential market has been fairly quiet.â&#x20AC;?

Hunters Winery has invited Nelson based artist Judy Brown to exhibit her â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Reflectionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; garden mirror artworks throughout the wineryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s garden.

Judy was invited as a guest artist to exhibit 14 pieces of her â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Reflectionsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; artwork, and as of yesterday began the task of decorating the wineryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s garden.

The exhibition includes her garden mirrors which have been created using vibrant colours and textures with the use of ceramic, glass beads and stones. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is an honour to be asked as a guest artist and the gardens are stunning. The natural beauty here really lends to my mirrors,â&#x20AC;? Judy says.

In the past Judy has had works accepted for the Peters Doig Art Awards in Marlborough has sold work locally and nationally.

Her garden mirrors have been made to last and have been designed to transform any home, garden or business, she says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They are all unique, very modern and uplifting.

Another busy long weekend for our police Blenheim Police made 19 arrests over the long weekend, the first after an assault at a High Street address at 10.35am on Friday.

A 63-year-old unemployed male was arrested for male assaults female after a domestic incident. He was arrested again later that day for breaching his bail conditions.

A 44-year-old male painter was arrested at 9.30pm for threatening to kill and dangerous driving after an incident on October 27.

It is alleged the man drove past the woman on Grove Road and waved his fist at her before yelling that he was going to kill her.

A short time later she and her partner were driving along Wither Road when the male allegedly crossed over the centre line in his vehicle and drove straight at the vehicle.

At the last second the male veered away but remained mostly on the wrong side of the road and it is alleged he only missed colliding with them by a very narrow margin.

The male then did a U turn and followed the woman along a number of streets until she and her partner were able to drive to the Blenheim Police station where they

reported the incidents.

At 11pm a 44-year-old male invalid beneficiary was arrested for assault after he allegedly headbutted a female at a Spring Creek address.

She suffered minor bruising to her nose but did not require medical attention.

There were a also number of arrests for court-related charges, including a 25-year-old female sickness beneficiary was for breaching her community work requirements, a 29-yearold male computer technician for failing to appear in court At 1.40pm a 21-year-old unemployed male was arrested for operating a vehicle with unnecessary exhibition of speed.

On Saturday at 12.15am an 18-year-old female retail assistant was arrested for offensive language, while at 2.15am a 27-year-old male manager was arrested for trespass.

At 3.20am a 22-year-old fisherman was arrested for driving whilst disqualified and driving with excess breath alcohol

(642 milligrams of alcohol per litre of breath).

Later that day, an 18-year-old male student was arrested for an offence committed in Weld Street in July.

He is charged with possession of utensils and burglary.

An 18-year-old unemployed male was also arrested that day for failing to appear in court.

Arguing with a young man and his girlfriend on the side of the road in Scott Street led to the arrest of a 39year-old male beneficiary at 1.30am on Sunday.

He was arrested for disorderly behaviour likely to cause violence after he allegedly intimated he wanted to fight the male.

A bouncer from a licensed premise intervened and the male and his girlfriend walked away.

The male was then refused entry to the licensed premises and the male attempted to start a fight with him. A passing Police patrol subsequently intervened.

At 1.40am a 54-year-old male chef was arrested for indecent assault after an incident in a licensed premise involving another male.

That afternoon, a 25-year-old male tourist was arrested for shoplifting and possession of cannabis, and a 26-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

A brief history: Redwood Street With Mark Stevenson First National

Thomas Redwood JP was an early Marlborough colonist and it is for him that the name Redwoodtown, and the Redwood Pass are named.

For some years Thomas was a member of the Provincial Council Executive, one of the first governing bodies of the district, and was a member of the Wairau Licensing Committee.

A key date for the borough is recorded

Thomas was the son of Henry, an even more well-known pioneer whose knowledge of horses and breeding saw him labelled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Father of the New Zealand Turf â&#x20AC;&#x153; (The Encyclopaedia of New Zealand.

1966) Thomas was 20 when the family arrived in Nelson and soon after, his father Henry imported seven thoroughbred stallions, including the famous sire Sir Hercules, and 20 brood mares.

The encyclopedia entry says: â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Horses carrying his colours of black jacket and red cap won many trophies and it is said that New Zealand owes to him the importation of some of its best racing strains.â&#x20AC;&#x2122; Proudly sponsored by...

Full marks to deposed councillors Tom Harrison and Liz Davidson for turning up to show their continuing interest in the work of the council.

However, it soon went downhill, with the new council going into public-excluded private conflab after the deputy mayor and committees

were sorted out.

Not that it took much sorting â&#x20AC;&#x201C; not one councillor made any comment on the Mayorâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s recommendations.

NCEA results goes on-line More than 143,000 candidates are preparing for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s NCEA exams, being held from November 15 to December 1, 2010.

For the first time, NCEA results will be available to students online before hard-copy results are delivered by mail in the first half of January.

In previous years, students have received their hard-copy results at the same time as online results were made available.

In a new improved service, students will be able to order certificates and other results documents online and receive them in late January.

The first copy of each document is available free to students.

In previous years, certificates and documents such as the Record of Achievement and School Results Summary have been mailed out in April.

Once results are finalised and released in January, students can order results documents, including certificates, online through the secure part of the NZQA website.

To access online results and certificates, students must first register at the NZQA log-in page.

Documents available to students include awarded NCEA certificates, the Record of Achievement, and for school leavers, a School Results Summary.

In January, students without internet access can order their result documents by contacting NZQA on Free Call: 0800 697 296.

Mayor Alistair Sowman says he nominated Jenny Andrews as deputy mayor to fulfil the community function of the mayoralty.

In his first address to the new council last Thursday, he said his focus this term would be to support Marlborough through the downturn.

It was therefore important that the deputy was widely connected and close to the community they had to serve, he said.

â&#x20AC;?I need a deputy who understands the disciplines of the role and with whom I have a tested working relationship. â&#x20AC;?Councillor Andrews has functioned well in the role and the maintenance of her very high level of voter support confirms her standing in the community.â&#x20AC;?

Former All Black back where it all began Leon MacDonald talks to Damian George news@blenheimsun.co.nz Former All Black Leon MacDonaldâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rugby career has taken him all over the world and, now, back to the humble roots where it all began for a talented teenager.

After being summoned by then Crusaders coach Wayne Smith while playing for Marlborough as a 19-yearold, MacDonald went on to play 122 matches for the franchise, 56 tests for the All Blacks, and 37 for Canterbury.

With a wealth of knowledge and experience soaked up, he has returned to Blenheim this year after a second stint playing in Japan to take up a dual role as Tasman assistant coach, and Nelson Rugby Academy manager. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The role really suited me, being a Blenheim boy,â&#x20AC;? MacDonald says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was a really nice fit. When I finished playing, I wanted, in one way or another, to be involved in rugby at some level. I was really excited by the idea of it.â&#x20AC;?

As a keen rugby player and cricketer â&#x20AC;&#x201C; he represented Marlborough when they won the national Hawke Cup title in the 1993-1994 season - MacDonald recalls the fun of growing up in the small coastal town. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I enjoyed Blenheim, maybe because it was easy to play sport with friends. You could just jump on a bike and head down to the park or the cricket nets. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And because it was a small town, it enabled you to get opportunities you may not have otherwise had in a big city.â&#x20AC;?

One of those opportunities was his call-up to the â&#x20AC;&#x153;Red Devilsâ&#x20AC;? in 1994, where he was the youngest player in the side. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d played rugby and cricket with adults when I was quite young, so it wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t too different. The older guys took me under their wing and really made me feel welcome.â&#x20AC;?

After winning four super rugby titles with the Crusaders following his debut as a 19-year-old in 1997, MacDonald moved to the Japanese town of Iwata in 2004 to play for professional club

Yamaha Jubilo.

He returned the next year to regain his All Blacks jersey, and a place in the 2007 World Cup squad, before a second stint in Japan last year, this time for the Kintetsu Liners in Osaka. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our kids were younger when we went over the first time, and we really enjoyed the change of lifestyle living in a small town. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The second time was a lot different.

We were living in a big city, and we had a big group of Kiwis living over there with us. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was great, but it was really good to get home as well. There arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t many places round the world as good as New Zealand,â&#x20AC;? he says.

MacDonald has no definite plans regarding his coaching future and, for the moment, is content to learn his trade at the Makos and assist the development of a young team. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s only my first year, so thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s been lots of learning,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Over the next two or three years, we can really build a strong team and that will come with experience. Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll continue here and find my feet and keep learning.â&#x20AC;?

The Makos are resigned to the Championship [second division] competition next year after finishing outside the top seven this year, but MacDonald says that is not a bad thing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a bit of a misconception with this championship. You still get the chance to play teams in the top division, just not all of them. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We had 14 new guys this year so itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s probably actually better for our own development to be playing teams at our level.â&#x20AC;?

Biggest losers A goal to fit into a wedding dress has turned into the first ever weight loss competition amongst staff at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology.

NMITâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Biggest Loser Competition started this week.

The winner will be the person who lost the greatest percentage of body fat over the next seven weeks.

Fifty staff, including the Chief Executive Tony Gary, have signed up and have been measured by applied fitness students as their baseline.

The idea came out of a discussion in the staff room between NMIT staff Loren Aberhart and Grant McNeill. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was telling Grant how I needed to lose 6 kilos to fit into my wedding dress in January and he was saying how heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d put on weight over winter so we decided to work out a motivational way to lose weight.

â&#x2013; Friday Evening, November 19: The Friday evening will be a get togther from 6pm at the Clubs of Marlborough Conference Centre, where finger food will be provided along with a cash bar.

This will be a great opportunity for everyone to meet and greet, and for some it will be an occasion for catching up with rowing friends.

On display will also be all the memorabilia such as photos, medals and possible old boasts that the club has retained which many members would have rowed in. â&#x2013; Saturday Regatta/Picnic, November 20: This day will be an opportunity for past and present rowers to engage in a row on the Wairau (row meaning racing over a short distance of around 350 metres).

There will of course be the chance for those wanting to have a simple row.

There will be a picnic atmosphere where everyone can relax on the banks of the river and reminisce on past memories. â&#x2013; Saturday Dinner, November 20: From 6:30pm all attending are to meet at the Clubs of Marlborough conference centre.

This will be an evening of fine dining, tasting the best of Marlborough.

The dinner will be complimented by quality Marlborough wines.

WAIRAU ROWING CLUB CENTENNIAL: Past and present members George MacDonald, John Gibbons, Ramon Sutherland, Dane Boswell and Warrick Wright.

The Wairau Rowing Club was established on the July 27, 1910 by early settlers of the Grovetown and surrounding area.

Today many descendants of those founding fathers are proud members of the Wairau Rowing Club.

Centennial Celebrations will be held in Blenheim over the weekend of November 19th, 20th and 21st.

Celebrations begin with an informal get together on the Friday evening at the Marlborough Convention Centre, followed by a picnic and

Picton Wine Festival November 5th, 2010 For five-years the Picton Wine Club has been matching some of the best wine the region and country has to offer with magnificent morsels from Pictonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Le Cafe.

Now the club is gearing up for the first Picton Wine Festival on November 5 to celebrate its anniversary in style.

Sixteen wineries will present their top drops at the Mercure Hotel, with free tastings and excellent knowledge about the wines on offer.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board was established on 1 January 2001 following the passing of the New Zealand Public Health and Disability Act 2000.

Under this legislation, the Board has established three statutory advisory committees: Community and Public Health Advisory Committee (CPHAC); Disability Support Advisory Committee (DiSAC); and the Hospital Advisory Committee (HAC).

Each Committee comprises a mix of Board members and community members. The members of the committees are appointed by the Board.

Community members participate as full members of the committees, taking an active role in advising the Board on the planning and development of health and disability support services in the region.

Surfers shine Standout performance from local surfers

By Celeste Lodewyk Four local surfers have done our region proud at the recent Cape Classic Surfing Competition at Tauranga Bay near Westport on Labour Weekend.

With $8000 worth of prizes up for grabs the competition attracted 115 surfers from all over New Zealand including Blenheimâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Mike Lindstrom, Hamish Simpson, Tara Smith and Igor Ishida Coura.

The four surfed their hearts out to achieved strong finishes across most divisions, with the standout weekend performance coming from Mike, a 16-year-old Marlborough Boysâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; College student.

Mike and Hamish surf for Nelson Boardriders which allows them to enter competitions on a national level, though Hamish said Blenheim is a good spot for surfing. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are a lot of average breaks within half an hourâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s drive from town and for those wanting to learn to surf, summer is usually great as the waves are small most of the time,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Little Stars, big stage presence Some groovy costumes plus great singers and dancers make for stage success...

Last week the combined Marlborough Boys’ and Girls’ Colleges junior production –Little Stars proved an instant success with full audiences for both the Thursday and Friday performances.

The show centred on a TV show called Little Stars and was based on the behind the scenes view of an ‘Idol’ show.

It followed the five show finalists and their parents throughout the singing competition while including flash backs to their regional auditions.

MBC English and drama teacher Kristine Hudson who took on the director’s role for the first time said Little Stars showcased the outstanding talent of the combined college’s junior students.

“It was really funny and had a combination of high energy, enthusiasm and a talented cast of over 60 actors,

singers, dancers and musicians.”

The three show ‘judges’ were a delightful paradoy on all the judging panels we see so much of on Idol shows, while the singers and musicians all deserved accolades for outstanding performances, said Kristine.

“Musical Director Barbara Song and Choral Tutor Con O’Brien did a wonderful job of bringing so many young singers and musicians up to such a high standard.”

One aspect of the show which really stood out waas the choreography done by year 11 MGC student Eliza Elkington.

“It was creative and fun, and was designed to show off the skills of the dance troupe,” Kristine said.

Costumes created by Annie Gleeson were cohesive in style and colour, makeup and hair enhanced the char-

acters while the show set was simple yet spectacular.

At the end of the Friday’s matinee performance, the smiles on the faces of the audience confirmed the instant success of the show.

“It was an awesome production, really exciting and it makes you want to follow the storyline right through to the end,” said Fairhall School student Illesha Dennis.

“Groovy costumes, great singers and dancers. You can tell a lot of hard work went into the show,” said fellow student Lucy Partridge.
