Police say lock doors and be vigilant Story and Photo by Annabelle Latz It was bad enough when the house was burgled on Sunday evening.

When Claire Chicken noticed the back door wide open on Monday evening, she was gutted.

On Sunday evening about 9pm Claire and her partner Gary Newell were in their garage, at the back of their Houldsworth St rented property, for just over an hour.

They returned inside to put some music on.

“We noticed the speakers weren’t there, then noticed what else wasn’t there.”

The house had been entered through the unlocked front door.

“The kitchen light was on, the car was up the driveway, we didn’t think we needed to lock the front door if we were on the property.”

A laptop and an i-Touch were taken.

Claire and Gary moved to Blenheim two months ago, and a shipment of goods has just

arrived from their UK home.

It included something far more valuable, which was stolen on Sunday.

It was two gold rings, which Gary had in a wooden box in the lounge room.

“He didn’t even wear them, but they are nice things, you just keep them don’t you?”

No finger prints were found.

The police had to return to take more fingerprints yesterday morning. Continued Page 6.

Showers a blessing

GrapeRide organisers would “welcome weather again” Story by Celeste Lodewyk Many looked to the skies on Saturday hoping the rain gods would hold back, but for Forrest GrapeRide organiser Pete Halligan the dampness could not have come at a better time.

“The showery weather was a blessing as a lot of the time riders battle with dehydration in the heat, but over all it wasn’t cold, it was quite warm and the worst of the weather held off so we were really pleased,” he says.

On the day 2300 riders from all around the country took to Marlborough roads either vying for a fast time or simply for a fun

recreational ride.

“It was a brilliant day and everywhere you looked people were smiling and laughing, that’s what we love about this event,” Pete says.

The number of injuries reported on the day was low ranging from two broken collarbones through to minor cuts and grazes.

One cause of injuries was an accidental diesel spill on the Mahakipawa Hill near Havelock of which only one group of riders was affected.

New to the event, the PlaceMakers team of Rodger Cullen, Tim Dredge and Warren Ingram achieved its goal

of completing their ride in five hours.

“We had a time of 5hrs:2min:26sec which for a first time effort we were pretty happy with.

“The whole day in general was brilliant and what I liked was that the more experienced riders were happy to help us out.

A great afternoon, great food and wine and overall I couldn’t fault it,” Rodger says.

Turning some heads with his “secret costume” was Blenheim rider Philip Hughes who dressed as a wine barrel made from MDF custom wood.

“The barrel certainly got a lot

of comments from fellow riders, although I did end up with some bruises from my legs hitting it with every pedal stroke,” he says.

Philip won the best costume prize as well as second fastest in the Clanger category.

Once the ride was completed prize giving was held which was followed by the 100 Virgin Grape Crush of which wine will be produced and presented at next year’s event.

Shining new gym Story and photo by Robbie Parkes Blenheim’s new events complex, Stadium 2000 may draw the crowds with its large pool and court facilities, but the real gem is yet to be revealed.

A new gym, outfitted with $350,000 worth of equipment is set to open in the next few weeks as the finishing touches are being made.

“This is most definitely going to be one of New Zealand’s premiere gyms,” said Paul Tredinnick, CEO of Stadium 2000.

“This will be second to none of its type in New Zealand.”

The complex houses a number of indoor swimming pools, including a therapy room, sauna and steam room as well as a 2500 square metre sports stadium, but the shining star is set to be the fitness facilities.

The $350,000 worth of equipment was bought through sponsorship from Marlborough Lines and the Marlborough Stadium Trust.

Paul said the area absolutely needs a gym like this and the sponsorship reflects that need.

“Sponsorship is about relationships and people trust us and support what we do.”

“They know that if they support us financially, they are supplying hundreds of thousands of Marlburians.”

There is set to be group fitness dedicated rooms as well as a cycle room.

“As a facility, it’s unbelievable.”

ORAL HEALTH CLINIC REAdy TO ROLL Marlborough’s Mobile Oral Health Clinic will begin seeing patients next week after a blessing ceremony on Wednesday March 28.

The official blessing of the new mobile clinic will take place in Havelock.

This two-chair mobile unit will treat children from aged 0 to Year 8 at Havelock, Renwick, Seddon, Ward, and Picton Schools, and at Murchison Hospital.

The clinic will treat around 2000 children per year.

Notices will be sent to parents asking them to book a convenient time to visit the oral health mobile clinic when it is in their area.

Broadband work begins

Esk Valley Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc 2011 has taken out a gold medal at the Concours Mondial du Sauvignon competition in Bordeaux.

A total of 666 wines from over 20 countries entered the third Concours Mondial du Sauvignon competition which took place at the Bordeaux & Bordeaux Supérieur growers’ organisation in Bordeaux in the middle of March.

The contest aims to promote wines made from the varietal and to increase awareness of the comprehensive range of Sauvignon Blanc wines worldwide.

CORRECTION Sewing Store update: Last week the Friday Sun reported that the Sewing Store was relocating to a Wynen Street premises.

Rich life for local hero nominee Story and photo by Robbie Parkes Ian Blissett received a Local Hero medal in a presentation as part of the New Zealander of the Year awards held at the Scenic Hotel on Monday night.

The event celebrated Ian’s achievements and contribution to the community through his involvement in the likes of Meals on Wheels, the Red Cross, and the Veterans Association.

Local Heroes Medal presentations are being made to 137 recipients in 12 regions around New Zealand in March.

He said as a young Englishmen from the country he was very naive entering the army.

“Suddenly I’m in a barracks with 29 other guys of every race and creed you can think of.”

“When I was in the army you look out for your mates, translated into civilian life you look out for your

cipients, Ian attended the event with family and friends and said he was blown away by the whole thing.

“I’m very grateful for the people who have written these very nice things about me.”

“It just bowled me over.”

Ian has not been nominated for an award like this before but says the whole experience was very humbling.

A range of friends from various associations put Ian’s name forward for the award.

Hair to go on chopping block

By Celeste Lodewyk Long facial hair and pony tails will be on the chopping block this Saturday when the Shave Marlborough event kicks off at the Clubs of Marlborough.

This year’s event will be slightly different in that participants can opt to have their pony tails and long facial hair cut off rather than having a full head shave.

Organisers Leanne and Scott Palatchie say feedback and support for the event has been fantastic to date, especially amongst females and wish to remind people it’s not too late to get involved themselves.

“Registrations for shavees are being taken on the day so we are hoping that more people will come along, including the ladies to take part,” Leanne says.

The Clubs of Marlborough has announced they will be donating 50cents from every pint sold between 2pm and 4:30pm on Saturday to the fundraiser.

“We are encouraging as many people as we can to come along and support our shavees, buy a raffle ticket, a pint and enjoy the live entertainment we will have on offer,” Leanne says.

Toddler scalded with hot water Story and photo by Annabelle Latz Tania Wilson thinks the self-service water system at Chantilly Café should not be within reach of small children.

Tania, her partner Adam Dearman and their one and a half year old toddler Rhyder were having breakfast at the café midmorning last Friday, when Rhyder scalded herself with hot water after helping herself to hot water.

Tania helped the three of them to cold water at the self-service area when they first arrived at the cafe, and when Rhyder had finished her pie a few minutes later she walked up to the water area again by herself for more.

Tania got up from her table the first time and brought Rhyder back to the table, but Rhyder went up a second time by herself.

Rhyder Dearman shows the blister on her finger she received last Friday when she helped herself to hot water at Chantilly Cafe.

Tania was at the table five metres from the water area, reminding Rhyder not to touch the hot tap, when Rhyder screamed and dropped her glass.

“When I went over Rhyder’s hand and stomach were wet; she had touched the hot tap.”

Tania asked for some cold water, and was directed to the back kitchen.

“I was waiting for some kind of acknowledgment from someone about what had happened here.”

She felt disillusioned, and walked straight out to go to the doctor, without any assistance from staff.

“The doctor just said to put cold water on it.”

They went to a pharmacy to buy some burn cream.

“I didn’t even have enough money to buy the cream, and some lovely lady gave me $20. It just blew me away that there was still nice people out there.”

Tania then went back to Chantilly Café to make a formal complaint, and asked for her pharmacy bill to be paid.

The request was refused.

Owner of Chantilly Café Doug Sundholm said this situation would have been preventable if the toddler had been closely monitored, and the staff at the café could not be held responsible for children’s behaviour.

The self-service water system has been there for six years, is OSH approved, and has never caused a problem before.

“This comes down to parental control,” he said, and did not wish to comment any further.

Away with the hair Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk For his first ever fundraiser 12-year-old Blenheim boy Jack McCrae has decided to do something more drastic than simply making a donation, he has decided to shave off his hair for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand.

After watching television advertisements for Shave for a Cure Jack was inspired to get involved.

“I set a goal to raise $150 but as soon as the larger donations started coming in I realised this would be bigger than I thought,” he says.

To date Jack has raised more than $500 thanks to his family, friends and students and teachers at Fairhall School.

Jack will be shaving his hair off at the Shave Marlborough event on Saturday, 2pm at the Clubs of Marlborough.

Those wanting to make a last minute donation can do so online at the Shave for a Cure website by searching for Jack’s name.

daylight saving ends sunday New Zealand Daylight Saving will end on Sunday, 1 April 2012, when 3.00am becomes 2.00am.

People may find it convenient to put their clocks back by one hour before going to bed on Saturday 31 March.

As well as changing clocks, the end of daylight saving is an opportune time for people to check their household emergency plans and survival items and home smoke alarms.

The period runs from the last Sunday in September to the first Sunday in April.

This year daylight saving will recommence on 30 September.

Cairns wins viCtory Former Black Cap Chris Cairns has won his case against allegations of match-fixing in the 2008 season of the rebel Indian Cricket League.

The high profile case was settled in London yesterday where Cairns was awarded $175,000 in damages from former Indian Premier League boss Lalit Modi.

Two Blenheim women were among a group of ladies to take part in the first ever breast cancer survivors fly fishing retreat to be held in the South Island.

Last weekend Jan Morrow and Veronica Best headed off to Wakefield with 12 other woman for a weekend of socialising, pampering, and of course, fly fishing.

“We are really looking forward to this; it sounds like it will be a great weekend,” said Jan, who has some experience fishing offshore but has never used a fly rod.

The retreat was organised by Casting for Recovery Charitable

Trust. Three high profile fly fishing personalities, Lynda Topp of the Topp twins, Peter Carty and Tony Entwistle offered their expert experience and advice.

Most of the ladies on the retreat had never cast a fly rod, so they had the services of 14 guides on hand.

The women spoke to the Sun last week before they went.

“It sounds like we will be really well looked after. I just hope that the weather is good,” said Veronica, who also had experience fishing at sea but not with a fly rod.

The weekend involved fly fishing instruction, socialising, and a pampering session.

Casting for Cancer co-ordinator Sandra Jermyn said the guides offered their time free of charge.

“We are very humbled to have them guiding for us,” she said.

Sandra hopes to have more retreats in the future.

After the weekend, Sandra said the trip was extremely successful.

“It was a really good weekend.

The girls were blown away from the whole thing.”

She said the weather was a bit average on the Saturday but the Sunday was all go, with two fish brought in.

Sandra said they are definitely keen to do it again, but it was a matter of where or when.

By Annabelle Latz Neighbourhood pride helps reduce neighbourhood crime.

Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is the concept behind this idea.

Today was the final day of the CPTED project on Taylor Crescent, which started last Thursday.

Community Constable Russ Smith said they had a productive fun week helping residents paint fences, tidy back yards, and run after school projects.

Groups including the Police, Marlborough District Council, Housing New Zealand, church groups, Animal Control and RSPCA are some that took part, involving about 100 volunteers.

“I’m very grateful to the churches being involved. It’s a proper representation of Christianity.”

“It’s about things like pride, and helping people tidy up where they live. This leads on to building a stronger community.”

Russ said people become more comfortable about reporting crime to police after projects like this.

Research shows the amount of crime in an area before and after a CPTED project to drop by 40% for the following year.

“We have done a cost benefit ratio with the neighbourhoods we have already worked with, and there has been a significant decline in crime in the area.”

After that first year it continues to drop at a rate of about 20%.

“We do follow up initiatives with these communities,” said Russ.

Russ said a 41% drop in crime in an area contributes to a 400% savings cost, from less police call outs and court processes.

Trevor Emmett, russ Smith and Graeme Percy have spent a successful week on Taylor Crescent, helping residents clean up their properties and increase community pride.

Paul Johnson, manager of Safer Communities, street pride has been given a major boost by the generosity of Green Fingers Compost, who has taken away loads of green waste for free.

“Some people don’t have a way of getting rid of their green waste,” said Paul.

Trevor Emmett, Neighbourhood Support Marlborough, said it’s all about working together.

“It’s about building relationships between agencies and residents, and creating community awareness. We say this is one project, we

are here to help you, we are not going to start work where you sit back and watch.”

Graeme Percy, case manager for Safer Communities, Marlborough, summed the project up nicely.

“It’s aimed at community safety and crime prevention,” he said.

I love it the way it is. The Sun covers everything for its readers now that it comes twice a week.

It’s nice to go home and catch up on all of the local news over a cup of tea.

It would be nice to see some articles about the local history around Marlborough. It seems that not enough attention is paid to our local history and it will soon be forgotten.

It would be nice to see more interesting and fun local news.

It’s a great paper, there is nothing I would change.

I especially like the new crosswords.

Something more for teenagers to read, maybe a fashion page. I look at the Out & About page to see if there’s anyone I know.

I really enjoy the Out and About section, but it would be great to see more coverage of local events.

Dear Ed, Following the Ward motoring death on Saturday morning, supposably notified by a Police Officer, there was Two Fire Brigades called upon, another Police car, a Westpac helicopter, and an Ambulance.

And on top of all that, The Police car and the Ambulance, breaking the speed rules everywhere. Talk about road safety!

So, I ask the question, WHO assesses the situation, and calls in unnecessary

forces. Surely, if the accident victim is dead, what’s the hurry?

Dear Ed, Reading the advertisments in the Express last night & noted that the Local Council are advertising for a ( WAIT FOR IT) A “Truancy Officer” now, why would the Marlborough District Council want to hire a Truancy Officer when the schools are supposed to do that

work under the guise of the Education Department.

Dear Ed, Patricia Aikmans letter, Friday Sun 23rd, suggests bringing sand from Golden Bay to Picton beaches. Not a good idea.

The native flora and fauna would be disturbed and the Golden Bay beach

Government hypocrisy Dear Ed, It strikes me ironic the government in its latest local body reform is going to tell local bodies how to operate more efficiently, more economically.

Really when you ponder a bit, NZ has a total foreign debt of over $200 billion and government borrows $300 million a week, continually runs a trade deficit and over spends and misspends.

Ponder a bit more and I’m sure many will think government has absolute audacity and absolute arrogance to be telling local bodies how to run a smooth sailing ship.

Where did the last lot of local body reforms go? Ballooning rates and more and more bureaucrats and spiralling costs.

And they knighted Brian Elwood for heading those “reforms”!

Winter may be less than three months away, but already Marlborough has been experiencing the colder weather and many fireplaces have been kicked into early action.

Having a roaring fire at night is a cosy comfort, but if your home is not insulated or sealed against the cold, much of that heat will be lost.

Here are some things to start thinking about before the full blast of winter arrives.

- Get the fireplace ready by having a professional check it over and have the chimney swept and cleaned.

- If you haven’t already, organise your firewood and have it stacked in a dry place away from the exterior of your home.

- If your home is lacking in insulation call in a professional now and arrange to have your home insulated before the cold creeps in. Ask about the Warm Up New Zealand EECA heating grants.

- Check the exterior, doors and windows for crevice cracks and exposed entry points around pipes. Have them sealed.

- Replace cracked glass in windows and call in a double glazing professional to help prevent heat loss through your windows.

- Inspect your roof, gutters and downspouts and have them cleaned if necessary.

- Consider installing leaf guards on the gutters or extensions on the downspouts to direct water away from the home.

- Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors or replace old batteries.

- Outdoors, trim trees if branches hang too close to the house or electrical wires.

- Ask a gardener when your trees should be pruned to prevent winter injury.

- Prepare an emergency kit if you don’t already have one.

- Prepare an evacuation plan in the event of an emergency.

Shake a virtual bucket for Red Puppy Appeal Some spare change will go to good use this Friday as you wander through Blenheim.

As part of Puppy Appeal Week, Bayleys Marlborough will be collecting for Red Puppy Appeal in the Forum.

They will also be selling cookie cutters and accepting donations at their office located at the corner of Charles and Seymour Streets.

Liquor ban ignored Liquor ban breaches

Blenheim’s liquor ban was ignored several times throughout the weekend resulting in a number of arrests.

The first was on Friday when at 5:20pm a 19-year-old male restaurant worker was arrested, closely following by the arrest of an 18-year-old at 5:30pm.

At 6:15pm a 16-year-old male student was arrested for assault after a domestic related incident.

A short while later Police caught up with a 43-year-old unemployed male and arrested him on a warrant for failing to appear.

Ending Friday was a third liquor ban breach at 11:50pm by an 18-year-old male kitchen hand who was also arrested for possession of cannabis oil and possession of cannabis plant material.

Quiet Saturday

Sat u rday’s a r rests bega n at 12:15pm when a 43-year-old male vineyard worker was arrested for disorderly behaviour after an incident on Main Street in Blenheim.

Later that night a 17-year-old unemployed male was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

Minutes later at 11:10pm an 18-year-old male student was arrested for disorderly behaviour after an incident on Maxwell Road in Blenheim.

Early antics earn arrests

Saturday night’s antics spilled over to Sunday morning’s arrests resulting in a number of arrests for liquor ban breaches and drug charges.

At 12:45am Police arrested a 23-year-old male bushman for breaching the liquor ban.

This was followed by the arrest of a 30-year-old male chef and a 28-year-old male kitchen hand for liquor ban breaches.

At 1:45am an 18-year-old unemployed male was arrested for

possession of a cannabis pipe and for consuming a Class B drug.

Following an incident on Scott Street, a 22-year-old male factory worker was arrested for offensive behaviour.

An 18-year-old unemployed male allegedly broke a window at a Maxwell Road address and was arrested at 2:30pm for wilful damage.

Later that afternoon a 21-year-old unemployed male was arrested for breaching his bail conditions.

At 7:10pm a 54-year-old male labourer was arrested for assault after an incident at a Whitney address, and ending the weekend was the arrest of two male fishermen for disorderly behaviour after an incident on Waikawa Road in Picton.

Blenheim woman Cherie Mitchell received her award last Friday at the National Fibre Festival National Exhibition at the Millennium Gallery.

Cherie Mitchell received her award last Friday as part of the festival’s National Exhibition at Millennium Gallery, much to her surprise.

“It’s a thrill really just to have it recognised.”

“It’s nice to get that encouragement.”

Cherie has been working in fabrics for about five years.

Her piece was made through felting, a technique older than weaving that doesn’t use seams to connect the material and emerges as one whole piece.

“It’s a more difficult type of construction.”

“You have to think about what you want to make and what fabric you want to use, what design to use and what pattern to use.

“You start from scratch.”

She completed the piece in about three days but only after months of planning in her head.

The piece is made from Marino wool and silk materials with colours inspired by the sea.

Her piece will be shown at the Creative Fibre Festival held in Blenheim in April.

Why the weather and what’s the outlook?

The reason for the cloudy conditions over NZ this summer is clear. However the cause of the reason is debatable with two possible options standing out.

There is a correlation in winter between colder conditions in the Antarctic and the position of the polar Jetstream.

When it is colder the polar Jetstream moves further south pulling the high pressure cells south. The high pressure cells are then able to fetch colder air up over NZ and we have cold winters.

This correlation normally applies only in winter.

However for several years now cloud has covered much of the southern oceans denying any chance for solar warming. This has resulted in cooler southern conditions. These colder than normal conditions have held the polar jet stream unusually far south this

summer and consequently also the high pressure cells. The consequences have been dramatic.

Because the high pressure cells are so far south instead of pulling summer’s warm dry Australian air down over NZ, have lifted cooler southern sea air north over NZ. This colder air then mixed with moist tropical air which condensed the moisture into clouds and gave us the gloomy summer we have just endured.

The odd day of sunshine came when the anchored high moved on and warmer northerly winds arrived.

However these hot interludes were short as the next high pressure cell soon positioned itself below Australia and in the southern Tasman, to then again send its cooler air northward over New Zealand.

As the high pressure cells are already in a more southern pattern circling around the southern seas we should expect continuing cold for the foreseeable months.

Two possible, not necessarily exclusive causes for these colder conditions exist. Firstly the Chilean volcanoes have not stopped erupting and ash is a well-documented global coolant. Taken in isolation this gives hope for the future as when the volcanism subsides conditions may warm in the southern oceans.

However there is a second more ominous possible cause that derives from the weak solar activity which has caused the increased global cloud, rain and snow for the last 4-5 years.

Coupled with the impending grand solar minimum it could mean this new weather pattern will last for decades.

Close games in Summer League Volleyball Marlborough Volleyball Club’s Fairweathers’ Senior Summer League, round-robin play on Thursday evenings was close at the top of “C and the Mixed/ Social grades”.

The President’s saw Woodbourne Cannons and MBC the two top contenders competing for top honours.

In the President’s grade final MBC deserved to edge ahead in the early set for a 22-25 result.

However Woodbourne Cannons with a wealth of experience managed to stave off any resurgence by the MBC. Cannons drew equal with the second set 25-18 and then romping away with the remaining set, 25-13. Treefellas had their third win of the season a three setter against MGC Senior B. Treefellas easily accounted for their opponents, 18-25 and 25-21.MBC playing a double-header were allowed to concentrate on their combinations for their next weeks Secondary School Nationals by their opponents Kinoaths.They easily accounted for their opponents taking all three sets; 25-11, 25-21 and 25-16. Woodbourne Cannons defaulted to MGC Senior C. This Thursday will see Marlborough Volleyball Club Championships from 6pm - 8pm at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000.
