That is the advice firmly entrenched in the minds of these two cowgirls, for their few seconds of thrill they will experience this Sunday.

Jacinta Sheridan and Melissa Jessop will be competing in the division two bull riding class at the Junction Hotel Tua Marina Rodeo and Vintage Machinery Field Day. It is fun, adrenaline pumping, and addictive.

Jacinta, 24, has been riding rodeo since she was small enough to ride the sheep.

Melissa, 23, is taking part in her fourth rodeo.

Back on home soil for Winery tour Annabelle Latz Touring around New Zealand with her guitar is described as really good fun.

And Clara van Wel can’t wait to strum her guitar on stage this Sunday, in front of her family and friends.

The Marlborough teenager will be the opening act for the Classic Hits Winery Tour, on this Sunday at Villa Maria Estate.

She will be the first slice of talent the crowd is treated to, before The Adults, AnikaBoh&Hollie, and Fat Freddy’s Drop take to the stage for the rest of the evening.

It has been a busy few weeks and Clara has enjoyed it all, from playing, touring, enjoying parts of her country she has never been to before, and even managing a spot of paragliding in Queenstown.

“All the people are really nice, I’ve learned a lot about what it’s like to be a professional musician.”

It has been a year since Clara graced the stage, where last year she provided a special exclusive treat for Marlborough.

This year, although being part of the official line up, and New Zealand’s Got Talent 2012 win-

ner, things are still exactly the same.

“I’m still doing the same thing, I’m still performing, writing songs, and doing what I love.”

It is not just the winery tour that has kept Clara busy.

Prior to the tour, she was at the Auckland studio The Lab with producers Joel Little and Mark Dennison recording her single ‘Beautiful’ which will be released on March 1.

The debut album which includes this single is to be released in April.

‘Beautiful’ encompasses the spirit and imagination of young love dreamt of, but not yet experienced.

“Beautiful is a song about wanting to be noticed and loved, and how a lot of us have insecurities about the way we look. I hope the people who hear this song recognise the beauty within themselves and look deeper than the surface when they look at others,” explained Clara, about the single.

Clara has been touring with the New Zealand musicians since February 2nd, when they kicked off the tour in Matakana.

“I’ve done a couple of eightsecond rides with the calf rides.”

Making the eight seconds is hard.

“Even four seconds feels like a long time,” said Jacinta.

A steer who puts up a good fight is also important.

“Then you know it was more of a challenging ride.”

Getting winded, bruises and scratches are common.

“My favourite part is probably the adrenaline, I don’t really do any other adrenaline sports.”

Jacinta is a pharmacy technician in Picton, and people are often surprised to hear of her favourite sport.

“People often assume we do barrel racing,” she said.

“It’s quite good for the shock value.”

They both said once they are on the ground, they like to get out of the arena as quickly as possible.

“You don’t want to be out there too long, it’s not a good look,” said Jacinta.

Melissa said rodeo is great fun, and it’s all about the thrill.

“It’s a good family day out, everyone likes to watch the cowboy fall off, because the thrills and the spills keep everyone interested,” she said.

Brownlee to talk on Clifford Bay Minister of Transport Gerry Brownlee will be speaking at the BNZ Business Partners Speaker Series at the Scenic Hotel Marlborough from midday on March 8.

Mr Brownlee will be taking questions from the audience about the Government’s proposal to shift the Picton ferry terminal to Clifford

Bay, south of Blenheim.

“We’ve asked him to talk about the Christchurch rebuild and Clifford Bay,’ said Debbie Carter, the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce’s executive assistant.

She said the dinner could accommodate 100 people and about 20 tickets were left. The cost for the

presentation, which includes lunch at Mondrians Restaurant, is $49 per person.

Allan Scott, founder of Allan Scott Family Winemakers, will speak on April 17.

Policeman assaulted A Picton police officer was taken to hospital yesterday morning with serious facial injuries following an incident at the Picton Police Station about 9.15am. The officer had arrested a man for disorderly behaviour and taken him into the police cells. As the officer was taking the handcuffs off the offender he was attacked.

Other staff came to his assistance and the offender was restrained.

He will appear in the Blenheim District Court today charged with disorderly behaviour and with the intention to injure.

First Kiwi in the Tower of London Chris Tobin The first non- British Beefeater dropped into Blenheim earlier this week to give a talk to Blenheim South Rotary.

Patrick Nolan, of Tauranga, served as a Beefeater, or to give the full title - Yeoman Warder of Her Majesty’s Royal Palace and Fortress, the Tower of London - from 1992 to 2008.

Mr Nolan was among 34 Beefeaters serving at the Tower, acting as tourist guides in addition to undertaking formal duties such as protecting the Britsh Crown Jewels and general guarding.

“We’re also the first aiders, the finder of lost parents and the policemen of the tower,” Mr Nolan quipped.

He applied to join the Beefeaters after serving 30 years in the New Zealand Army which included experience in Vietnam, the Middle East and Singapore. All Beefeaters are recruited from the military.

Taking up permanent residence in the sprawling Tower of London was exciting for the Nolans.

“I was living in the house built 200 years before Maori landed in New Zealand; it’s overwhelming,” Mr Nolan said.

“When I was interviewed for the position it was in the house Henry VIII built for Anne Boleyn and we sat round the table where Guy Fawkes was sentenced to death.”

As a guide Mr Nolan had to encounter a great deal of inane questioning from the thousands of tourists such as: “How often did people get executed? ‘Once is enough,’” Mr Nolan would reply.

And from an American tourist: “Where can I get a taxi to Belfast, Northern Ireland?”

However, Mr Nolan said he greatly enjoyed

Police release driver’s name Police on Wednesday released the name of the man who died after his car plunged more than 150 metres over a bank in a remote area of the Marlborough Sounds on Monday afternoon.

He was Timothy Shand, 63, of Port Ligar.

A serious crash investigation is under way and a post mortem has been completed.

The matter has been referred to the coroner.

Picton construction company sold

Kat Duggan After 30 years serving Picton, Alastair and Kay Letham have sold their business, Ranui Construction, with a vision of settling down and enjoying retirement.

Mr and Mrs Letham moved to Picton in 1974, where they ran motels for nine years, and Mr Letham also managed the Picton depot for Marlborough Transport.

He started Ranui Construction with a wheelbarrow and a chainsaw in 1982, while Mrs Letham helped by answering phones, and eventually working part time at the Devon Street depot.

Thirty years on, the business had worked on retaining walls and house sites all over Picton, the Sounds, and even as far as Okiwi Bay and Cape Campbell.

Mr Letham said he felt the time was right to move on, and wanted to thank all of their clients for their continuing support.

“It [the business] was just a big highlight from start to finish, we had some wonderful, loyal clients that stuck with us right from day one,” Mr Letham said.

The couple are optimistic about the future of Ranui Construction, which changed hands on January 30, saying there was good work ahead, and things

International visitor spend has decreased six per cent. Tourism New Zealand says the drop in international visitor spend is a result of the change in visitor mix and the impact of increased spend in 2011 by visitors attending the Rugby World Cup. Kevin Bowler, chief executive said: “The increase in travellers visiting family and relatives (VFR), decrease in the average length of stay and a strong New Zealand dollar are all contributing to a decline in total spend. Despite this, the spend from China increased by 42 per cent for the period”.

Wairau Hospital Dear Ed The threat to the services at our local hospital is real!

If the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board have their way services will be drastically downgraded.

One or two services will be transferred to Nelson and in a relatively short time most will follow. Do not believe it cannot happen or will not be allowed to happen.

The large and modern Napier hospital was closed in 1997 and all services transferred to Hastings 20 kilometres distant thus leaving the large city of Napier with no hospital services at all.

Patients die while being transferred from Napier to Hastings and that is over a flat and relatively speedy motorway. What chance does a seriously ill Marlborough patient have while being transferred to Nelson over the Whangamoas?

The loss of the ferries to Clifford Bay will have a serious impact on

many in the district but everyone in Marlborough will be affected by the loss of our wonderful hospital services.

But fear not good citizens of Marlborough, of course all is not lost, our Member of Parliament, elected and appointed hospital board members, our mayor and our councillors would never allow this to happen. They rally to the cause as I write!

Must go to the stye and let the pigs out for their daily fly.

Wairau set nets Dear Ed, As a keen fisherman I am concerned at set nets put in the Diversion and lower Wairau. While it is not illegal apparently, it’s likely the nets are taking trout and especially

salmon at this time of the year.

I would prefer rangers to be checking the nets for trout and salmon, than asking kahawai fishers for trout licences.

Pedestrian crossings Dear Ed As a driver I am becoming more and more concerned that pedestrians are getting confused about when to cross the road.

People are walking straight out onto the pedestrian crossings, especially from Countdown to the library, without even looking for oncoming cars. I stopped to ask one woman why she didn’t look and got the answer that it was ‘my job to stop for her’ as she was on the crossing.

She had absolutely no idea what the white diamond up the road meant – none at all. I asked around and it seems hardly anyone knows that the diamond on the road marks the safe distance for a car to stop

for the pedestrian crossing. One kid thought it was decoration!

That ‘decoration’ means a car is required to stop for pedestrian if it is outside the diamond and the pedestrian is waiting at the crossing. If the car is inside the diamond mark, it is required to stop only if it safe to do so – the pedestrian is required to let the car go first. Walking out in front of a car two metres from the crossing will get you killed and you will be at fault – not the driver.

Please remember that you are flesh and bones and cars are metal and if you connect with one, it’s you that will break first. Remember that diamond is there for a reason and look for traffic – both ways please.

Blenheim man sent to jail A Blenheim man has been sent to prison for three years for attacking and beating his partner for more than a year.

Shane Timehe Kakahe, 39, was sentenced in the Blenheim District Court on Wednesday after earlier admitting three charges of assault with intent to injure and one of male assaults female. Judge Jan Kelly said two of the charges were

representative.

Phillippe Frank Jean Cochet, a 42-year-old vineyard worker of Blenheim, was sentenced after admitting a charge of indecent assault and behaving threateningly.

He was sentenced to 18 months’ intensive supervision for alcohol rehabilitation including residential treatment and 200 hours’ community work.

Bush fires need more man power Annabelle Latz Bush fires are still blazing in Victoria.

One more Marlborough name has just been added to the second deployment contingent of New Zealand fire fighters, who flew to Australian this week to lend a hand in controlling them.

On February 12, six members of the Blenheim Volunteer Rural Fire Force travelled to Victoria to help battle the bush fires.

This week, Trevor Tidey, local fire operations manager who works in the forestry industry and based in the Waihopai Valley, has joined a second New Zealand deployment contingent of 40 fire fighters, as task force leader.

They are part of a New Zealand deployment contingent of 44 fire fighters.

Due home at the beginning of March, the first contingent is working two seven-day rotation shifts, battling a 17,000 hectare eucalyptus bush fire in East Gippsland, in the Omeo Mt Hotham area.

“That’s close to three times the size of the Wither Hills,” said Richard.

He said it is impossible to fight the actual fire, so the men have been working hard controlling fire lines and preparing fire lines to burn between the main fires.

“They are doing really well, and getting a lot of good positive feedback.”

Trevor is due home mid-March.

Cornflowers have ‘universal appeal’ Awapuni Nurseries gardening guru, Tod Palenski.

I’ll be honest – I’m not a fan of all flowers. I’m not going to name names but some are a bit cheesy or old-fashioned and others are a little hard work.

Cornflowers, however, are a variety I’m quite fond of.

In my opinion, they have universal appeal.

I know all sorts of different people from different generations who are fans of cornflowers, all for different reasons.

They look good and they’re easy to grow. But the main reason I’m a

fan of cornflowers is for the wild, non-conforming feel they add to a garden.

This pinky, lavender, blue or white coloured flower grows well next to cosmos because they like the same conditions and they’ll hold each other up. I also like to plant it amongst my lavender, roses or delphiniums for the same reasons.

All you need is a sunny, welldrained spot with soil that isn’t too sour. Before you start planting, I recommend adding a good general fertiliser like nitrophoska blue or blood and bone to help

give the seedlings a good kickstart.

Then dig a little hole and plant each seedling around 10cm apart.

They’re quite upright growing plants and planting at this space apart will allow them to support the weight of each other.

Don’t have much space? They also grow really well in pots.

Try planting cornflowers in the centre of your pot and lobelias around the outside.

In around six to eight weeks your non-conforming plants will start to flower and provide a splash of colour for autumn.

Tips

FLOWERS TO PLANT NOW Chrysanthemums bloom from early autumn until mid-winter.

They are a favourite flower to pick as their blooms last 2 weeks or more in a vase.

Wallflowers bloom over winter, so get them in the ground now to brighten any dreary corners in the cooler months.

Anemones can be planted any time from now until mid-May. They flower for months on end (from winter through to December) and last well in a vase also.

Good health begins at the roots Beetroot is often hailed as a ‘super food’ by health experts, celebrated for its ability to help the body eliminate toxins and prevent fatty deposit build-ups.

One suggestion made by nutritionists is to drink beetroot juice to help reduce blood pressure.

Young beetroot leaves can be eaten raw and are packed with iron, so add some to your salad today.

No tolerance for poachers

By Annabelle Latz Poachers will not get away with their actions.

This is a message from Rural Police Officer, Senior Constable Beau Webster, Last Sunday evening he stopped three poachers in their tracks as they drove out of the Waihopai Valley in their ute, carrying one pig.

Senior Constable Webster had earlier received correspondence from a land owner in the area, informing him of theoffenders’ actions.

“This is the likely outcome with the cooperation of the rural community.”

These poachers had been snapped on a personal camera while in action, on a forestry block.

Senior Constable Webster said it is becoming a more common trend for landowners to install security cameras on their land too.

“The quality is getting better, we get some really good photos now.”

‘They are a great assistance.”

The three poachers, two aged in their forties and one is his twenties, have been charged with unlawful hunting, and their firearms have been ceased.

They will appear in court within six weeks’ time.

Allan Spencer, managing director of Premium Game Limited in Riverlands, said strict rules ensure the wild game his company buys is safe.

“Police are looking at revoking their fire arms licences as a result.”

“The rate of people getting caught is higher.”

Rules include health and safety considerations, lists of vehicles, rifles, details and dates of areas hunted, declaration of permission letters from landowners, details of poison dropping, and proof of correspondence between landowners

“If one hunter steps out of line we do not buy off them again,” said Allan.

Allan, who hunts himself, admitted there is a black market for wild game.

“We know most of the hunters. We just stick to the guys who we know.”

Rallying for the local rodeo

Story and photo by Annabelle Latz It is one of the longest-running rodeos in New Zealand, and the local community support is the main reason why.

The Junction Hotel Tua Marina rodeo, and Vintage Machinery Field Day has always been a popular family event, since it first took place more than 60 years ago.

Last year it raised $10,000, with $5000 going to the school, $2500 to the Residents Association, and $2500 to the Vintage Machinery Club.

President of the Tua Marina Rodeo Association Grant Sheridan said last year was the best on record, and is confident this Sunday’s event can be just as good, if not better.

“I really like the idea that it’s a family day for everyone. It’s not just a rodeo, there is a whole day of entertainment.”

This is Grant’s second year as president, but is a familiar face around the South Island rodeos, and still gets on a steer from time to time in the ring.

“Like all of us, we came up through when we were kids, starting on calves, then riding broncs and steers.”

Bulls are not unfamiliar for Grant either.

This Sunday, on Philip and Sue Woolley’s property on Blind Creek Rd in Tua Marina, gates will open at 10am, with the rodeo beginning

at the Marlborough Girls’ College.

She is currently being dealt with by the Blenheim Youth Aid Section ·At 4.30 pm a 20 yea r old unemployed male was arrested in Pollard Park after he was found driving his motor scooter through the park. He has being charged with driving whilst forbidden and he also had a warrant for his arrest for failing to appear in the Chch District Court. Incidents and accidents: ·Police are seeking assists from members of the public to help identify the driver of a white sedan motor vehicle who was involved in a accident at the intersection of Purkiss St and Lakings Rd. At 8.20pm a cyclist and the white sedan collided. The cyclist has suffered minor injuries in the collision.The vehicle has driven off without the driver stopping and ascertaining if the cyclist was injured. The white sedan will possibly have damage to the rear of the vehicle. “The Pelorus Club has always had strong players who are proud to wear the blue and white uniform,” said Ruth Baker, the club president.

“This season the club is offering junior netball to those living in the Marlborough Sounds area with practice being held in Havelock.

“Pelorus also offers senior netball (training at Horton Park, Blenheim) in all grades including social, which is great for former netballers hoping to get back into the sport.”

A lot of cycling fans around Marlborough will be delighted to see Simon van Velthooven’s latest success.

Van Velthooven who was in Blenheim several weeks back, claimed a silver medal in the men’s kilo time trial at the UCI Track Cycling World Championships in Belarus early yesterday (NZ time).

Third last year, Rhino as he is nicknamed, went one better this time and emulated Kiwi Harry Kent who way back in 1970 took the silver in this same event at the world champs.

Van Velthooven cut out the distance in a time of 1:00.86 behind the winner, flying Frenchman Francois Pervis who clocked

1:00.21.

Kent was in the news four months ago too. Now aged 65 and living in Upper Hutt, he was one of 29 Wellington sports people inducted as Sports Legends at the new ASB Centre in Kilbirnie.

At the function celebrating this event, Kent caused a surprise when he said he was a descendant of Moriori and Waitaha which had not been publicly known before.

More Marlborough drivers gain podium places Darrell Bate Ralph Gillespie and Brent Goulding a re t he latest Marlborough drivers to add their names to Eastern States Speedway achievers' list this season after gaining podium places at last weekend’s South Island Stockcar Championship.

The Saturday night race meeting, hosted at their home track at Renwick proved favourable for Gillespie finishing second and Goulding third and Nelson’s Cody Teece taking the top spot in the title.

Other local drivers Zac T hompson, R icco Gray, Daryl MacDonald, Gavin Marshall and Steve Bidulph also competed alongside the best drivers from all over the island.
