Golden winner Picton to celebrate favourite son

By Annabelle Latz Joseph Sullivan will be going back to where his rowing career began this Sunday in Picton, when his home town puts on a welcoming ceremony for their Olympic legend.

As long as the weather plays its part, Joseph will be rowed to the ceremony by Picton Rowing Club junior members, to London Quay where the public celebration, arranged by the Picton Rowing Club, will take place, at 1pm.

He will arrive at the foreshore, aboard a coxed four, on the “Sea Lion”, the Picton Rowing Club skiff in which Joseph began his training as a young teenager.

Because of recent wet weather, and more forecast for the weekend, the paved area was a better alternative compared to the water-logged foreshore.

Speeches will take place, and the Queen Charlotte kapa haka group will also perform.

Picton Rowing Club member Mitchell Mackenzie-Mol, 17, will be one of the junior rowers to row Joseph in.

Repair work extensive

By Robbie Parkes Following the recent floods, extensive repair work is needed over many different aspects of the clean up.

Repairs for some of Marlborough’s rural roads are expected to run to about $1.3 million, and it is going to be Christmas before all the work is done, given the damage inflicted over July and August.

Most roads have reopened but there are still problems in Sed-

don and Ward, and care needs to be taken when driving.

Marlborough District Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler said there are a whole range of repairs that need to be done.

“Basically we’ve had three events.”

“A lot of the damage has been around the fords and road seal.”

The Taylor and Omaka rivers need extensive work, he said, and at the time of the flooding,

Air pollution levels monitored

by Annabelle Latz Air pollution has got a lot worse in Blenheim in the past two years.

Last night, and tonight, air pollution monitoring is being done in Blenheim and Picton.

A monitoring box has been strapped to the top of a car, collecting atmospheric data.

Fleur Tiernan, environmental scientist for Marlborough District Council, said the cause

of high air pollution levels may be known in a few months.

Monitoring at Picton will also enable a data collection spot in the town to be decided.

“We haven’t got one there yet.”

The data collection site for Blenheim is at Blenheim Bowling Club.

Sally Gray, atmospheric technician for NIWA, said testing at night time allows them to find out where air pollution goes when there is

the Council were still undertaking repairs from events the year before.

Some of the more complex jobs take time, including consulting with landowners, and the repair of storm drains and sewerage pipes, he said.

“Some of them are much more challenging than others.”

The Riverside Park amphitheatre has become submerged a number of times over the course of the flooding, but Mark said it

has coped.

“It was known at the time it was built there was going to be flood events.”

No repair work is needed on the amphitheatre itself, and the clean up process will involve a hose down, and removal of debris from the river.

Mark said the cost of repair work and the clean up will be discussed at the Assets and Services Committee meeting next week.

Surgeon to help raise funds The Blenheim South Rotary Club and the local Cancer Society will fundraise for Daffodil House in Christchurch with a Charity Concert and Silent Auction.

Daffodil House provides local cancer patients and families with a base while in Christchurch.

The fundraiser will provide funds for refurbishment.

In a novel idea Nelson surgeon and pianist Adrian Secker (right), will perform in his operating theatre attire.

The new road sign in Joseph Sullivan’s honour has been the topic of much debate recently, but the final signage has been decided on.

Someone who has had a lot to do with the sign is Graeme Rose, Managing Director of Window Treatments New Zealand Ltd, based in Christchurch.

In 2005 Graeme started sponsoring Joseph.

“I’d heard there might be a funding issue and thought this can’t get in the way,” said Graeme.

“There have been lots of people working behind the scenes.”

It will feature Joseph on the water with his name superimposed over the scene.

“I made a commitment to back him right through to the Olympics, and now he’s got gold – that’s great. I’m still pinching

myself, it’s just fantastic.”

Graeme said Joseph has always been great to work with.

“He has such a massive heart, he is such a determined young man, and he comes from a great family.”

Graeme is not a rower himself.

“The only time I’ve ever been in a rowing boat was with Joseph in a quad in 2005 in Picton. It scared the heck out of me!”

He said it was like being on a toboggan, on ice.

“But it was actually quite fun.”

Mayor Alistair Sowman says Joseph has done Picton proud.

“Any town, any region would be proud to lay claim to such an outstanding sportsman,” he said.

“He will be relocating to the site once he takes posession at the end of September.”

He said the property had been on the market for the regular period of four to six weeks before it was sold.

Tyre General on the move

By Robbie Parkes The Tyre General is making the big move from its Grove Rd premises to the old Beaurepaires site on the corner of Nelson & Hutcheson Streets.

Tyre General area manager Patrick Gilchrist said the company had taken over Beaurepaires sites in Blenheim, Nelson, Christchurch, Timaru, and Dunedin.

“Basically Beaurepaires have exited the commercial tyre market, and the main commercial stores would be closed,” he said.

“Because that was made public, there has been interest in the likes of those sites or businesses.”

He said they are going through the processes and paperwork involved in informing and communicating with Beaurepaires customers and staff members who want to continue on with them.

Patrick said the majority of work that needed to be done was stocktaking, repainting and re-branding of the signs and businesses.

“It’s really a matter of going through those processes.”

“It’s all go at the moment.”

He said it was pleasing to see a lot of staff stay on board with them.

Blenheim is the only town where the current Tyre General store will be relocated,

and that stage is well under way.

Patrick said the Beaurepaires in Blenheim is a little bit bigger, and has a couple more aspects that improve upon their last location.

The old site on Grove Rd will not stay as a Tyre General but will be repurposed, he said.

“There’s still a lot of work to be done, the bones are there, but we don’t have the decorative stuff ready.”

“Everything has happened very, very quickly.”

The Tyre General site on Grove Rd is still a fully operational business, they are just moving stock at the moment, he said.

I heard of a lady who was stalked and terrorised each time she tried to leave her husband. He did end up getting locked up but then done damage to their property once he was released, to intimidate her for telling on him. This behaviour was supported and backed up by friends and some of his/her family, saying she asked for it.

Atlantis Backpackers at risk?

Dear Ed, I was surprised to learn in last fridays Sun that the Atlantis Backpackers building in Picton is a earthquake risk.

I would have thought a few older buildings in Picton would be a greater risk than Atlantis Backpackers.

I hope the council will show some consideration for an appropriate time frame for the owner to solve the problems with this building.

It would be sad day if Picton was to lose Atlantis Backpackers which has a world wide reputation as a homely, friendly place to stay for hundreds of backpackers over the last few years.

Rural schools will get broadband Dear Ed, Mr Baillie is completely wrong in what he has said in his letter to the Sun Ed on Wednesday 15.

I’m pleased to advise that Marlborough Rural Schools will have Ultra-Fast Broadband within three years of the Government’s UFB initiative being rolled out.

I think that is outstanding and reflective of a Government that truly values rural New Zealand and what it has and continues to contribute.

In fact, Seddon Primary School in one of the first school to receive UFB under the Government’s funded Rural Broad Initiative (RBI) I will gladly front up to any rural school and talk about the wonderful opportunities UFB connectivity

offers in education to our rural children.

I have difficulty discussing the UFB service and costs with grumpy individuals who expect to receive everything below cost.

Dear Ed I was dismayed to read, (The Sun, August 15) that a local brewery had supplied beer to Kiwi House for our Olympic athletes.

On television, we saw champagne being sprayed

by Olympic winners - (a stupid custom used even in non-olympic sports.)

All sport should be free of drugs, both legal and illegal.

Too many of our youth and adults are ruining their lives and the lives of others.

Why can’t everyone be drug free?

Salmon farming should not proceed Chairperson of Sustain Our Sounds, Danny Boulton, shares his thoughts with The Sun, about the Enviromental Protection Agency’s Board of Inquiry hearing that begins on Monday, involving the potential expansion of New Zealand King Salmon’s marine farms in the Marlborough Sounds.

“Predominantly, the submissions are against the expansion of New Zealand King Salmon.

Sustain our Sounds Inc. members have gone through the environmental assessment reports of NZKS. We now have stronger reservations about PR statements that NZKS produces salmon with; “environmental integrity”, “no environment effect detected”, “in balance with the environment”, “having an excellent environmental record”.

The company has not been able to comply with existing consent conditions to produce

8,900 tonnes of salmon.

Farm pollution has been detected much further than the allowed 150m and copper levels are unacceptable.

Its newly applied pollution footprint will go as far as a staggering 900m.

Bottom pollution is only 20% of the waste created, the other 80% released into the water column; the impact of which has not been monitored in the 25 years since farming started.

In Hawkes Bay we now have a red tide, caused by dinoflagellate Akashiwo sanguinae through excessive nutrients.

Where this dinoflagellate is not directly poisonous, the dying biomass of algae can create a hypoxic (oxygen depleted) seabed, potentially killing everything.

The algae also affects bird feathers and is known to kill seabirds overseas through hypothermia.

Non-slip manhole covers trialled for safety

By Robbie Parkes The Marlborough District Council’s trialling of new nonslip manhole covers aims to make a difference to motorcycle safety in the area.

Two lids with a resin and sand based compound on top, were installed on the corners of Alfred St and Seymour St, and Weld St and Alabama Rd on Saturday.

The incentive came about following concerns raised by members of the Marlborough Motorcycle Road Safety Group (MMRSG).

Marlborough District Council Road Safety Coordinator and member of the group, Robyn Blackburn said the inspection lids in the middle of roundabouts

and intersections were often a point of concern.

The group approached the Council assets and services department to see if anything could be done to prevent the dangers, or if they could review the lids next time maintenance checks were done.

“Obviously some of the pipes under ground are in place and you can’t change that, and some can’t be moved or altered.”

Young chefs win bronze

By Robbie Parkes Jamie Per rott and Daniel Davidson have proved they can handle the heat in the kitchen, after winning bronze at a national cooking competition.

The Marlborough Boys’ College students entered two sections of the 2012 New Zealand Culinary Fare in Auckland - the college challenge, and the individual cafe breakfasts.

The college challenge asked competitors to use Regal King Salmon in their recipes, a complicated task, Jamie said, but it was in the latter challenge that both year 12 students won bronze.

The cafe breakfast category required entrants to utilise Verkerks products, under time pressures.

“That was a lot more versatile,” said Jamie.

“I did a summer salad and a crepe, with sweet chilli kransky’s, american-style streaky bacon, and soft-boiled eggs.”

Daniel on the other hand produced a ratatouille with poached eggs, wilted spinach, Italian tomatoes, sausage and bacon in a baguette, and a tropical salsa.

“They judged us on method, the creativity of your dish, and how you incorporated your ingredients.”

“A lot of it was in the process.”

While both entered, worked together, and trained as a team, they were there as competitors.

“It wasn’t until I was on the plane that I realised he was actually my opposition,” said Jamie.

While the boys did well at the three-day event, it was no easy process getting there.

They had to raise about $3,000 to cover the costs of travel, competition entry, ingredients and equipment, while at the same time figuring out the base recipes they would work from.

“It started off with a group of us and the commitment faltered, then it was just us two.”

Jamie said they had a huge amount of help from Diane Cooper, Caroline Brown, chefs Chris Fortune, Marcel Rood, Lawrence Purser, Mathew Allen and Christina Keenan.

“We had around 6 professional chefs helping us.”

“The Farmers’ market were a huge help, they put us in weird environments, which helped us with our nerves.”

This included getting up at 7am to cook omelettes for More FM Marlborough with ingredients such as celeriac.

Jamie said it was great fun at the competition, and even on the flight home, he was ready to do it all over again.

New designs for Market St building

By Robbie Parkes The building at 57 Market St, on the corner of Wynen St, will be demolished and the new building designs aim to bring some energy to the CBD. APL Property Blenheim Ltd are the property project managers for the building, and a spokesperson for the

company said the new contemporary, and high-quality building will add a positive feel to the central shopping area.

The current building has an earthquake notice on it that requires it to come down by July, 2013, they said.

It will be a 521sq m, prominent single-storey development.

The building is currently fully occupied, except for the top level, they said.

Demolition will take place in July 2013, and the new building is expected to take approximately five months.

“All going well, tenders will be going out in May, June, 2013.”

You can’t beat silverbeet Silverbeet, you just can’t beat it for a good vegetable companion plant.

It’s full of vitamins, it grows well, it’s great for filling empty or tight spots in your garden, and it’s perfect for planting in pots too.

Planning on planting some winter brassicas like cauliflower and broccoli?

Silverbeet does well in between rows of brassicas because it’s ready to harvest earlier and it grows tall rather than out.

The key to planting silverbeet is making sure your soil is well drained.

If it’s a bit sluggish try building it up into mounds.

Or, if you’re planning on planting

it in a pot, which I highly recommend, use a good potting mix.

I particularly like growing coloured silverbeet in pots because it can add a bit of colour to your garden or entrances during winter.

It’s well suited to pots because it’s not quite as frost hardy as regular silver beet and likes full sun.

Plus you can put it in a spot that’s easy to get to without getting wet and cold!

Once you’ve decided what variety you’d like, get down to your MEGA Mitre10 or The Warehouse and grab some of Awapuni Nurseries’ Traditional Value or Pop’n’Grow seedlings.

Planting beet is easy.

Dig a little hole and place the seedling inside.

Whether you’re planting them in your garden or pots, simply space the seedlings around 20cm apart.

Depending on the condition of your soil your silverbeet will be ready to harvest in around eight to 12 weeks.

If your soil is well composted and free draining you’ll be looking at more like eight weeks.

I like to harvest my coloured beet when it’s still young and add to a spinach salad.

Lastly, watch out for snails and keep them away with some quash or our tried and true beer bait.

Silverbeet & Potato Quiche 3 eggs (beaten) 3/4 tsp salt 1 cup milk 1/2 cup self-raising flour 2-3 cooked potatoes (cubed) 1 cup cooked silverbeet (cut into small pieces/ strips) 1 cup grated cheese 1 la rge onion (chopped) 2 cloves of garlic Butter for greasing flan dish

Put beaten eggs, salt, milk and self-raising flour in a bowl and stir just enough to combine.

Saute onion and garlic until cooked.

Add potato cubes, silverbeet, cheese, onion and garlic.

Pour into a greased flan dish. Cook in a moderate oven (180°C) for 30 minutes.

Spiced Rhubarb This recipe is so delicious and easy.

Cooking time is about 3-4 hours on low.

Ingredients: 750g fresh rhubarb 3/4 cup sugar 1 cinnamon stick 3 whole cloves 1 tsp orange or lemon peel Cut rhubarb into 2cm pieces.

In a slow cooker combine rhubarb with sugar, cinnamon, cloves and grated peel.

Cover and cook on low for 3-4 hours.

Remove cinnamon and cloves.

Serve hot with creamed rice or cold with whipped cream or ice cream.

Rural GP workforce scheme under review Rural Women New Zealand is calling for more transparency around the number of doctors, midwives and nursing graduates working in rural communities under the Voluntary Bonding Scheme.

This scheme gives financial incentives to health professionals who agree to work in hard-to-staff areas.

A key concern is that the scheme appears to have failed to attract any rural GPs, according to the Rural General Practice Network, despite over 44 permanent GP vacancies around the country.

Rural Women New Zealand health spokesperson Kerry Maw said rural primary healthcare services are being supported by international medical graduates, who make up 57% of the rural GP workforce, instead of encouraging local graduates.

The scheme which has been running for three years, is now under review by Health Minister Tony Ryall, as the first of the graduates become eligible for payouts towards their student loan debts.

“We are concerned to hear that just 25 doctors, of a potential 105, have had their payments approved so far, and that

the numbers of those now applying to join the scheme has fallen significantly,” said Kerry.

Rural Women New Zealand says the problem is urgent, as the average age of rural GPs is rising, and is now between 50 and 55 years.

“Rural Women New Zealand fully supports positive incentives for nurses, midwives and doctors to work in the rural sector.

As a rural doctor, Theun Thein sees a wide range of cases, and meets people from many backgrounds.

The Dutch doctor moved to New Zealand one and a half years ago, and straight to Havelock Medical Centre, with his wife and three year-old son.

They have since had a second son, who is six months old.

Dr Thein, 34, alternates his work days between Springlands Health in Blenheim, and Havelock Medical Centre, which is part of Springlands Health.

He really enjoys the variation of the rural practice.

Arrangement to combat illegal logging Australia and New Zealand this week strengthened their long standing cooperation on forestry issues by signing the Arrangement on Combating Illegal Logging and Promoting Sustainable Forest Management.

The signed Arrangement illustrated a shared commitment to working together to address illegal logging and promote sustainable forest management.

Australia’s Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry, Senator Joe Ludwig, and New Zealand Associate Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan Guy, signed the Arrangement during forestry talks which included discussions relating to the progress of Australia’s Illegal Logging Prohibition Bill 2011.

It was also seen as a way to build the

Government and industry’s capacity to manage forests sustainably.

In 2010-11, New Zealand was the largest export supplier of forest products to Australia with trade valued at $715 million.

Nathan Guy said although New Zealand is a low risk market because it imports very little timber, it made sense for our two countries to work together.

Tamati Smith, from Tasman Forest Management Ltd, based in Renwick, said this agreement will have little impact on the logging industry in New Zealand.

“The New Zealand forestry industry has practiced sustainability for a long time, long before it became an environmental buzz word.”

Tamati said the timeframes involved with managing forests means that sustainability is fundamental to forestry.

“The challenges to forestry in NZ is more to do with the longterm economic viability of forests and forest products.”

This means increased competition from other countries, other substituted products, competition

for labour and the resources to train them.

“Ever increasing costs and constantly changing exchange rate are also having an impact.”

Tamati said the small amount of NZ Native logging occurring is highly regulated, and there would be no illegal logging in NZ exotic (Pine) forests.

“This agreement is mainly aimed at reducing illegal logging by making it illegal to import non-certified logs or lumber.”

Tamati said it was unfortunate that most of the illegal logging occurs in developing countries. This is because certification is not cheap, so some legitimate operators may be considered illegal.

“Even small forest owners in NZ cannot afford certification.”

The common certifications is either FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) or PEFC (Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification).

“This bill will not affect the sustainability of the NZ Forest and Logging industry, although it has a potential impact on communities in places like Indonesia and Papua New Guinea.”

Wineries positive for next season

By Annabelle Latz The overall banter amongst the trade stalls at the Romeo Bragato Conference yesterday was very bright and enthusiastic.

Wine industry representatives from all over New Zealand have gathered at Clubs of Marlborough for the three day conference, which ends today.

Bill Evans from Extenday, who sells reflective and light-diffusing ground fabrics, said there was lots of confidence about the industry at the moment.

“It’s been good business-wise, with lots of interest.”

John Smith from Du Pont said people in the industry are already talking about good returns for next season.

“It’s a lot more positive.”

Geoff Thorpe had made one of his regular trips down from Riversun Nursery, in Gisborne.

“It’s been great to see the change in mood from the last three years.

Returns are looking positive, and there’s rising demands for the vines.”

Geoff Warmouth from Biostart said the optimism in the industry will be a great chance for growers to look at alternative methods for maintenance jobs like plant disease control.

“It’s about the combination of biological and chemical control.”

Laurin Gane from Tasman Crop said he heard lots of positive comments at the conference.

“It’s due to last season’s shortage.”

Teresa Smith from Sustainable Wine Growing New Zealand said a lot of people had popped in to chat to her, and the conference was a good chance to catch up with a wide range of people in the industry.

“We got to talk about communication, and it was a good chance to put faces to names.”

The Bragato Wine Awards has been run in conjunction with the conference.

Red Cross receives new van after 20 years

By Robbie Parkes The new Marlborough Red Cross van is a welcome addition to the team, and is sure to make life a lot easier for volunteers in the region. “ We’d b e e n lo ok i ng around for a new van for a few years,” said Edith McKay, Ma rlborough branch treasurer.

“When money became available we bought it.”

Through a number of fundraisers and donations, including a golf tournament and Bride of the Year, the charity could replace their old model after 20 years.

“It is in the vacinity of about $85,000 and all paid for by the region,” said Edith.

About seven different organisations use the van, and there are about seven drivers, she said.

The vehicle, is used for

transporting people to meetings and events, including taking resthome residents on outings too.

It fits around 11 people, and has an electronic hoist, making it easy to fit in a couple of wheelchair-bound passengers.

Edith said it is a great addition to the group, and will make life a lot easier for those needing it.

Mayfield School students have made the latest addition to the water-themed writers’ walk alongside the Taylor River.

Anthony Forbes, Bailey Robinson, and Leana de Joux each contributed to the poem this year, which is engraved near the walkway entrance by Beaver Rd. The walk was started by Springlands School in December 2010, when student Fynn Sawyer’s poem was unveiled

Henry bolsters blues

The Blues next season looks a little brighter following the confirmation of both Sir John Kirwan and Sir Graham Henry in the coaching seats.

Henry will oversee the defensive duties in a ‘technical assistant’ role for the Super XV rugby side next season.

It is Henry’s first coaching role in New Zealand since being the All Black’s head coach for the past eight years.

Sun and fun at ski champs

By Annabelle Latz There were no complaints about the snow, and the sun was shining, at the Rainbow Inter-Secondary Schools Ski and Snowboard Champs on Tuesday.

Open to all Secondary Schools in the top of the south, skiers and boarders gathered for slalom and terrain park competition.

Sisters Melissa, 15, and Stephanie, 14, from Marlborough Girls’ College, had a great day in their slalom skiing competitions.

“It was really really fun,” said Stephanie, who was pleased with her 35-second time on the slalom course.

Brawlettes to roll Nelson The Boomtown Brawlettes Blenheim Roller Derby League are competing in their second bout against the Nelson Sirens of Smash next Saturday the 1st of September at the Trafalgar Centre in Nelson.

Roller Derby has been gaining momentum in New Zealand, with the previous Triple Beheader bout in Nelson drawing record crowds and packing out the Trafalgar Centre, something that other mainstream sports have struggled to do.

During the last school holidays she and Melissa enjoyed a family trip to Twizel, skiing at Ohau and Round Hill, getting in some practice.

Relatively new to the ski competition scene, Melissa said it was all going well so far.

“Competing is just how you can try your best, and have fun.”

Stephanie, 14, was new to the experience of ski competitions on Tuesday.

“It was heaps of fun,” she said.

Stephanie focused on trying to get the fastest time she could, and not miss any gates.

“Some bits were slower than other bits,” she said, but was happy with 42 seconds on the course.

“It wasn’t scary.”

Stephanie was also pleased with the conditions.

“It was quite smooth, and the weather turned out to be really good.”
