Doggone ...where’s my dog?!

By Chris Tobin Vineyard owner and farmer Haysley MacDonald scoured the country to buy a rare purebred blue coloured English Staffordshire bull terrier.

After much searching, he managed to locate one from a Tauranga dog breeder and after paying $2000 for the dog, Mr MacDonald became the proud owner of 12-week-old Tama.

Owner, that is, for the past month up until around 10.30 on Tuesday morning when Tama disappeared from Mr MacDonald’s front yard at his home on Wairau Bar Road.

“My wife Julia was home hanging out the washing,” an unhappy Mr MacDonald said.

“She went inside and left Tama out the front on the deck and lawn with my rotweiller but when she came back half an hour later, Tama had gone.”

New, safer bus bay at college Chris Tobin Marlborough Girls’s College has been using the same bus bay since 1963 but this is now to change.

As from next Tuesday, students travelling in from outlying areas such as Picton, Havelock, Renwick and Seddon will alight and get on buses at a new bay established on the Nelson Street side of the college tennis courts.

“Buses will come in off Nelson St, drop off the students under new shelters and they will cross the tennis courts to school,” deputy principal Julian Adamson said.

“It’ll be safer and they’ll be well away from the road.”

Support concert, say ‘chemo mates’

By Chris Tobin ‘Chemo mates’ Jo Chamberlain and Barry Hayman are urging the Marlborough public to get behind a Blenheim charity concert later this month to raise money for Daffodil House in Christchurch.

Jo, deputy principal of Marlborough Girls’ College and Barry, manager of Geoffrey T. Sowman Funeral Directors in Blenheim, first met when both were receiving chemotherapy treatment – Jo for breast cancer and Barry for bowel cancer.

“Anything that can provide support for people afflicted by this ‘terrorist attack’ is all good,” said Jo yesterday.

“The great thing is there’s huge generosity out there.”

Barry spent seven weeks at Daffodil House with his wife Beth. The house operates for those having to go to Christchurch to receive treatment.

“It’s a special wonderful place, like a home away from

“It was Christmas holidays and it was a horrific shock; there was no family history of it. It was all go from there. The prognosis was not great.”

Jo had a full mastectomy and then breast reconstruction which involved 20 hours of surgery.

Determined to “sock it” to the cancer Jo said she remained upbeat throughout her ordeal, put on her “lippy’ and got back to work.

“I’m dangerously well now and firing on all cylinders.”

She attributed the support of her partner Murray and her family as being critically important to helping her recovery, as did Barry of his wife Beth.

“I’m upset because I was the one looking after him; I feel I should have been round,” Mrs MacDonald said.

On Saturday he leaves for Hong Kong where his company Aquaflow is a finalist in a sustainability competition run

by American magazine Red Herring.

The company will be vying for top honours among the top 100 technology companies from the Asia region.

After this, Mr Gerritsen travels to Amsterdam where the company for which he is chairman, CarbonScape, is among the six finalists in the international Postcode Lottery Green Challenge.

This prestigious award which will earn the winner over $700,000, is presented each year to leaders in environmental change and innovation.

Sharpies Blenheim tees off in Nelson

The pair took over the Sharpies Greenacres at the Greenacres Golf Club in Richmond three weeks ago.

“Basically that golf shop went under, and the opportunity arose to get in there,” said Jonti.

“This is just a little thing on the side, and it’s obviously quite

He said it is all very exciting, and being at the course means they do not have any overheads, and they are supported by a portion of the green fees.

Both Jonti and Bradley have been making regular trips to the second store, but their priorities are still here.

Jonti said it has definitely been a big move considering they’ve only been in Blenheim for just under two years.

With Rebel Sport on the

horizon, Jonti said they are still confident about retaining their market, and their new venture is just a reflection of how business is going.

He said Rebel will have cheaper equipment that they may sell at a higher price, and vice-versa.

Likewise, Jonti said it is the club-fitting service and ‘try before you buy’ ethos they pride themselves on.

“It’s all about customer service at the end of the day.”

Houses make way for Ale House Four houses on Middle Renwick Rd, Springlands will be moved over the next few weeks to make way for the new Ale House.

John Derry told the Sun he expected the site to be cleared soon and work to begin on the Ale House building in late November.

The houses will be removed from the sites by Coffey House Removals.

Not going back to KFC Dear Ed, I have been a KFC supporter since they opened in Blenheim.

Over the years I have had the odd warm chicken, the odd undercooked and over cooked chicken, the crunchie chips you can’t eat and warm potato and gravy.

But in the last 3 years this store has been on a slide down hill, I have had chicken that still has blood running from it, I have had coleslaw placed in with the hot chicken etc.

I contacted the area manager who was sort of lost for words, I did receive more vouchers at a later date for the poor food standard..

I have also had coleslaw that looked and tasted about a week old and also potato and gravy that tasted and smelt like the gravy was burnt.

What got me angry about this was that I travelled to KFC from

home 10 minutes each way only to find my Chicken warm, blood still running from the meal and all they offered was a $ 5-00 voucher.

Service at KFC Blenheim is 5 % the other 95% is staff rushing around shouting orders and not paying attention to instore customers.

I have been there in the last 3 months and have had to stand in line for the best part of 15 minutes before I get served, while one isle and cash register sits idle and staff are too busy doing nothing.

My Family has brought our last item from KFC and it will take a lot to get us back.

You reap what you sow and KFC management in Blenheim have had a bad ‘Harvest’ and should have sprayed the weeds long before now.

I am taking my $40 dollars and spending it elsewhere.

Family photos found of European holiday

By Annabelle Latz A Blenheim resident has hundreds of photos of a European holiday, enjoyed by people he does not personally know.

He got more than he bargained for when he purchased a book on earth worms from the recycling centre on Taylor Pass Rd. Five weeks ago he opened the book when he got it home, to discover three discs of photos.

“I thought they were connected with the book, but when I put one in the computer I saw all these photos.”

There are more than 300 photos of European destinations, and family photos too.

“I’ve been to Italy, so I recognised those photos, and it was obvious some were taken in Egypt because of the Pyramids.”

He guessed the holiday-makers had connections with the wine industry, because there were lots of photos of vineyards.

Assessing soil quality for growth The northwest and west boundaries of Blenheim are being closely looked at as potential areas for expansion.

As part of Marlborough District Council’s revised Urban Growth Strategy, it is being considered at council this week that the continuation of the soils investigation program continues.

This will provide geo-technical evaluation of soil characteristics, which will be used to complete the South Marlborough Urban Growth Strategy, and plan future growth in Blenheim.

Jordan Nickerson, a mother of a young child, said it is great for getting rid of unused items at home, and purchasing everything from toys to clothes.

“Lots of people use it, even my mum.”

More than 2500 people are members of the page.

“For those of us who use it

properly, it’s really good.”

People need to act as they wish to be treated.

“If people have problems with it, they don’t have to be part of the page.”

The Sun has published articles about the page being mis-used and causing offence to some users.

The message from the majority of users this week has been that the facebook page has been very successful for many people in the community.

Jordan said Serena Kamalan,

who started the page, is doing her best to help everyone.

“She is a volunteer, and people need to move on.”

Serena said she understood that she cannot please all 2500 people who use the page, but overall, it is a service well used.

“It’s a matter of making sure people are safe.

Any type of abuse will lead to people being banned from the group.”

Serena has received many comments of support this week for the facility she set up.

“I’d love everyone to know what a great job Serena Kamalan does.

It’s a hard job, you get a lot of flack which isn’t necessary. Everyone should buy and sell, then get on with life,” said one user.

“I have been with OGS for a few months now and I have had both great experiences and made great contacts.

I have also witnessed and experienced the nastiness of people not getting their own way Usually only a very few who turn very vicious, but they are quickly and quietly banned, and the site

carries on as a wonderful happy and friendly place.

Unfortunately I think Serena has to bear the brunt of their vile behaviour on behalf of us all and I think the 2500 members who have stuck round appreciate her and the other admins immensely for that,” said another user.

Cadets show skills

St Johns cadets from Marlborough boasted a strong representation of the top of the South Island competitors who took part in the Champions Field inaugural event at the end of July.

It was held at Bridge Valley, Wakefield.

Seven four-man teams came from Blenheim,

27Sqn ATC Blenheim, and two from St John Blenheim.

Cadets had their skills tested in navigation, knot tying, archery, go-carting, drill, a first aid scenario where they attended a mock car crash, and a special test.

The Champions Shield went to ATC Marlborough.

By Robbie Parkes Coming off the back of their bronze medal win at a national competition, budding gourmets Ja m ie Per rott a nd Da n iel Davidson are working with an award-winning chef to take the next step.

The Marlborough Boys’ College students were aided by local chef Lawrence Purser, among others, for the 2012 New Zealand Culinary Fare in Auckland last month, and that help is ongoing.

“Because they just went to Nationals, we thought we’d just carry on while it’s still fresh,” said Lawrence.

Lawrence, a former MBC student, has placed in numerous competitions, and was named South Island Chef of the Year in 2010.

He is mentoring the boys and helping them to fundraise to buy more equipment for next year’s contest, but also for their school’s food technology room. “ W hen you go away to competitions, you have to take everything with you,” said Jamie.

“We just want to increase what we have available.”

Jamie said one of the big hopes is to get gas for the food technology room, as they currently use electric cookers, as well as open the school restaurant up regularly for the public.

In the meantime, a number of items are being shortlisted, including a dishwasher and new frypans.

“Bits and bobs really,” said Lawrence.

A lot of the gear here is domestic,

he said.

Next Friday, they will be opening The Oaks Restaurant at MBC for another big fundraising dinner to support their cause.

The four-course, BYO dinner will take place at the College Hall, with the likes of Marlborough salmon, twice cooked pork belly, and a banana raspberry sorbet featured on the menu.

There will be spot prizes from Maggie Jane, Prenzels, and Seresins Estate, and a raffle.

The boys are grateful for the support from Maggie Jane, Prenzels, Seresins, as well as Westmeat Blenheim.

Tickets are $50 and can be purchased from the MBC office or Maggie Jane on Maxwell Rd. The dinner takes place at 7.30 pm, September 14.

Have you begun noticing ants invading your home?

With the warmer weather and summer months approaching, populations of ants nests rise and they become more active.

Ants are often found in our kitchens, marching across decks in search of food or even climbing in through windows searching for dropped crumbs in bedrooms.

Greig from Jae Marlborough says, “Ants seem to be particularly bad this winter, probably due to the extra heavy rain we have had over the last 2 months, driving them inside our homes.

Ant treatment is most successful if a thorough investigation is made to find their most likely nesting spots.”

These pesky critters can be controlled and kept away with a few simple steps.

How to control ants: Search: Locate the ant nest sites. In most cases ant nests will be in warm,

dry sandy soil, often under a rock, paving stone, driveway etc; where the nest is kept dry.

On warm days search for a stream of worker ants going back and forth into a hole in the ground.

It may be possible to drop bread crumbs in their path and then watch the ants carry the crumbs back the nest.

Kill the queens: Use many small amounts of gel or liquid bait where you see ants or have seen them in the past.

If the gel is not being taken, try the liquid bait and vice versa.

Workers feed on the bait and take it back to the nest to feed and in effect kill the queen(s) and larvae.

Replenish the bait regularly until you see no more (or very few) insects feeding.

Only then should you use spray insecticide to eradicate the nests and to act as a barrier to further infestation.

Ants are very sensitive to strong chemicals. All dishes or containers used to hold bait should be rinsed well with clean water and dried before use.

A great alternative is to use a strip of masking tape and squeeze the bait on top. The tape will hold the bait in place and can be easily removed.

Stop them with barrier surface sprays: These not only kill ants that cross the treated surfaces but will also act as a barrier.

Many species of ant will avoid the treated surfaces if possible.

Deny them a nest site: Treat nest entrances to destroy the nests.

Also sprinkle treatments throughout flowerbeds, drives and gravel pathways in a ring around the home.

When watered in it penetrates the soil killing nests and acting as a ‘curtain’ barrier.

You could also try brushing ‘ant sand’ into the cracks and crevices in paving and driveways to kill nests and prevent ants using these nest entrances.

Angelica was used in Europe for hundreds of years as a cure for everything from the bubonic plague to indigestion. It was thought to ward off evil spirits.

Getting your rose garden in shape...

• Fight aphids by hand or by blasts of water! If they persist use a fortnightly spray of 1 Tbsp liquid soap and 1 Tbsp liquid fish fertiliser in 4 litres of water.Or get out an old pot and throw in a handful of mint and tansy, 2 garlic cloves and 2 rhubarb leaves, chopped. Boil for 5 mins, strain and add detergent, then spray. Wash pot well.

• Mulch with a thin layer of unsprayed lawn clippings and/or finely chopped garden prunings.

But be sure to keep them away from the base of the plant.

• Give your roses a big spring feed.

Remember that pelleted sheep manure, forked in around the drip line is a good tonic to aid healthy growth.

• Enjoy your early roses, pick them and bring inside to admire.

By Annabelle Latz Sustainability is a word that must be on the forefront for new entrants into the wine industry.

It has been a couple of years since Peter Yealands saw a new potential in the vine cuttings lying between the rows after pruning.

“Typically, they have been mulched up with a rotary slasher, to break down into the soil.”

But with environmental wellbeing always on the forefront of Peter’s mind, he decided to bale them up, and burn them to heat water to be used in the wine making process.

“We have seen it as a resource that can be used better; we were burning an enormous amount of LPG gas each year to heat water.”

Pruning is the single biggest cost for a vineyard operation, so to save money on this output was ideal.

“And we have reduced our carbon footprint by 161 tonnes per year by burning the bales of vines.”

That is according to the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority.

After initially mak-

ing his own round baler from two existing conventional balers, Peter then imported two purpose-built balers from Italy - specific for dealing with the thick stems of the vine prunings.

A dry bale weighs about 300kg, and burns in the purpose-built burning unit, which was imported from the USA, for two to three hours.

Because they are seasoned for six months before being burned, the bales burn dry and clean.

“It’s equivalent to 150kg of domestic heating coal, or, believe it or not, 100kg of LPG gas, which is nearly10 barbeque bottles.”

The burning bales heat the water that is used as either hot water to heat the wine, or used to assist the heating of the glycol - the refrigerant to cool the wine.

“This application fits our needs and ethos. We go out on a limb to be sustainable.”

Currently, the 2-3% of vines cuttings baled each year produces 2000 bales, and the rest of the cuttings are mulched up.

The entries have just closed for the Green awards, an international competition based in London, where Yealands has its entry.

Still buzzing from their runner-up status in the Drinks Business Green Awards earlier this year, Peter is confident sustainability is on the right

track for him and his team.

“In 2008 when we opened I said it was our goal to be in the top five wineries in New Zealand, and be recognised as being the most sustainable wine business in the world. We are within reach of this.”

Yealands was runner-up to a Chilean business, Emiliana, which Yealands works closely with.

Investigation into ‘white space’ broadband urged A report on the use of new ‘white space’ technology, which has the potential to provide inexpensive, high-speed broadband for remote areas, has been welcomed by Rural Women New Zealand, as a possible solution for consumers unable to benefit from the Rural Broadband Initiative.

The TV White Space Technology for Rural Communications repor t was wr it ten by independent Wellington-based telecommunications consultant, Jon Brewer, funded by InternetNZ through its Community Projects Fund.

“Rural Women New Zealand

has strongly advocated for more to be done to level the playing field for people who live in areas where the terrain or remote location mean that the only option is satellite broadband, which comes at a significant cost and is affected by weather conditions,” says Liz Evans, RWNZ’s national president.

“This report suggests that using available television spectrum could offer a low cost, effective broadba nd alter native for rural areas, and one that, we understand, would not be affected by weather conditions and trees.

Boy behind the bow Story and photo

by Annabelle Latz The first experience Kadin Willis had of shooting something with his bow and arrow could be described as a real let down.

He was just a toddler, and it was the tyre of his mum and dad’s car.

The 16 year-old from Blenheim has been following his dad Matt Willis around the hunting scene since he could walk.

Kadin’s bow he shoots with now is a far cry from the stick that started his passion.

He holds numerous bow hunting national titles and records, and last evening he featured on Maori Television’s programme ‘Hunting Aotearoa.’

“My dad has always hunted, and I just followed suit,” said Kadin.

Most days after school, and certainly at the weekends, he is never far from his camo gear, hiking boots and his bow and arrow.

He can often be found up the Waihopai Valley and Wairau Valley, and his favourite hunting spots are D’Urville Island and the Southern Alps.

From stoats and possums to stags and boars, Kadin has his eyes and ears fine tuned for anything that crosses his path.

It was no small pig either, weighing about 115 pounds, with big tusks, really big.

“People think pigs go oink oink. But they don’t. They roar.”

Accuracy is a major priority when using a bow and arrow.

“There’s a sense of insecurity, because it’s just you and your bow, so you must get the right spot.”

“They’re tough animals, and intimidating. I get scared all the time.”

At 12 years-old he won the New Zealand Bow Hunters Society’s Master Bow Hunter Award – the youngest ever recipient.

Kadin shot his first deer when he was 12 years-old, chamois when he was 14 years-old, and then when he was 15 years-old; holding three New Zealand titles for being the youngest behind the bow.

Kadin shot his first pig with a rifle three months ago, when his bow and arrow was away getting repaired.

“I prefer the bow, I’ve seen the challenge of bow hunting.”

Kadin’s mum Lisa is very proud of her son, who helps to keep the freezers full, and is following his dream.

“He’s been at it since he was kneehigh to a grasshopper.”

Kadin Willis said hunting with his bow can be intimidating at times, but it fuels his passion for sport.

On the right track with land care

By Annabelle Latz Land owners in Marlborough are proactive at looking after their land from an ecological point of view, and this needs to continue.

The annual report for the ‘Significant Natural Areas Project – 2011/2012’ was presented at yesterday’s Environment Committee Meeting in Blenheim.

Nicky Eade is Marlborough District Council’s Environmental Scientist for Land Resources, and has been closely involved with the project that began in 2003.

Since the project began, 281 land owners have participated, 705 areas of natural significance have been identified, on 44,956 hectares of land.

“Protecting these sites is now the empha-

sis,” said Nicky.

She was pleased that landowners were embracing the voluntary nature of the project, but more action was needed to restore natural landscapes in the region.

There have been 74 projects done with landowners so far, involving activities like fencing off waterways and replanting.

“It’s a good start, but it’s only 10% if the 705 sites, or 4% of the total area identified.

We have a lot more to do.”

Nicky said one of the main features of the project was its voluntary nature, with no rules or regulations.

“It’s a real credit to the 74 land owners that have come to the Council, and been proactive in protecting their land.”

Under the RMA there is a clause that areas of land with natural significance must be protected, but Nicky acknowledged that land owners often have higher priorities.

So far, $1658,342 has been spent on land restoration work in Marlborough, which was funded by the Council, Central Government, and individual land owners.

Nicky said there is also a focus on revisiting the sites after work has been carried out, to check conditions.

“It’s about positive growth and management.”

She said there are still opportunities for land owners to have their land assessed for areas of natural significance.

“This project relies on participation.”

At about 11am a 32 year old male beneficiary was arrested for Unlawfully Takes a Motor Vehicle, Driving whilst Disqualified, Theft, Possession of Cannabis Utensils, Possession of Instruments for Conversion namely a number of keys. Supermarket break-in

At about 2.40am yesterday morning there was a burglary to the Redwoodtown Countdown after an offender forced their way into the supermarket and stole a mobile phone.

At about to 2.45am Police observed a suspicious male biking away from the scene, the male was heading north on Weld Street and when Police went to stop him he leapt off the bike and fled up a driveway and over a fence.

Time for tennis Story and photo by Annabelle Latz The weather has warmed up just in time for the tennis action at Riverlands School.

On Wednesday the school received $1200 worth of tennis equipment, including four mini-nets, tennis balls with varying compressions, a kit bag and 25 racquets.

The Mainland Foundation Charitable Trust funded the equipment, as part of the Grasshoppers programme which encourages tennis at primary schools.

The equipment was presented by Bill Ritchie and Rob Wilkinson, vice president and operations manager of Marlborough Tennis.

Riverlands School is the fifth school in Marlborough to join the programme.

Fairhall School, St Mary’s School, and Renwick School have already joined.

Rapaura School is joining soon.

Riverlands School principal Dave Parsons said more than 30 pupils want to play tennis this summer, compared to 15 last summer.

“Once a few children start playing, more get interested.”

He said the bright new equipment would certainly encourage interest, and tennis was a great game for the whole family.

In 2009 the school had two new all-weather mini tennis courts built.

jess waters, 11, adam McKenzie, 10, and Mackenzie hall, 10, are looking forward to playing tennis again this year at riverlands school, especially with their new equipment.

“It’s just something they pick up and enjoy.”

As part of the programme, the children will receive coaching sessions from Marlborough Tennis in term four.

“And we look forward to seeing some of you down at our courts,” said Rob Wilkinson.

Until now, the school has received equipment from Sport Tasman.

Riverlands School participates in the Primary Schools tennis competition that runs each Saturday in the summer.

Jess Waters, 11, Mackenzie Hall, 10, and Adam McKenzie,

10, played tennis last season, and are looking forward to playing again this summer with even more of their friends.

Their favourite things about tennis are playing doubles, having fun competitions, and learning new skills.

Revving up for moto trials

The Blenheim Motorcycle Club will be hosting two rounds of the South Island Moto Trial championships at Long Valley, Havelock, this weekend.

Club spokesman Brendan Wadsworth said 35 entries had been received among whom were six locals.

Wadsworth said club riders Jason Baker in the expert grade and his son Gareth Wadsworth in the juniors could be among

the major placegetters and if he had a lucky day himself, he could also figure in the presidents grade.

Competitors will be riding over obstacles, creeks and vertical banks.

The events start at 9.30am both days. right: jason baker is one local who should be prominent in this weekend's competition.

This is the message being voiced loud and clear from members of Marlborough Community College.

The Makos take on Southland at Lansdowne Park next Wednesday September 12, and Northland on Sunday September 16.

Rachel Crosbie works at the Community College, and has been busy pounding the streets, encouraging people to go to these games.

Last month Makos upset Canter-

bury, beating them 25-20 in Nelson, and had a heartbreaking 49-40 defeat to Taranaki a week ago, in New Plymouth.

Rachel said Makos faces are familiar ones at the Community College during the year.

“Everyone is buzzing. They have supported us, and we want to support them.”

Rachel has posted the public event on her Facebook page, and called it ‘Fill the Field – Support the Makos.’

Mikayla Charlton, a hairdressing student at the College, always goes to the games, and would like more

people to join her.

Shane Roberts, taking part in the Accelerated Study Programme, plays rugby for Moutere and Marlborough, and has always enjoyed the support of the Makos players who take coaching sessions at the College.

“It’s about going along with your friends and watching the boys play.”

Kick off for next Wednesday’s game is 7.35pm.
