Trip of a life Annabel wins trip to the London Olympics

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The number 21 is now a lucky number for Blenheim relief teacher Annabel Ingram, who won a trip to the London Olympic Games through a radio competition with ZM Radio last month.

Annabel, who shared the prize with her mother Louise Hopkins, flew out of New Zealand yesterday with plenty of New Zealand supporter’s gear in tow.

She entered the competition online which saw five people’s names and ‘seat numbers’ called out over the radio station.

The first to call back went into the final draw.

“When my seat number 21F was called out in the final draw I couldn’t believe it, I’m still in shock now,” she laughs.

“The number 21 is definitely a lucky number for me now, one I will never forget.”

News of winning the trip came the same week as Annabel was offered a new teaching

position, giving her an extra reason to celebrate.

“My uncle thought I was a good luck charm so he had me buy him a Lotto ticket, though he didn’t win,” she jokes.

The competition was organised by JR/Duty Free, the official sponsor of the NZ Olympic team which saw Annabel win return flights to London, six night’s accommodation staying at the Hilton Metropole, $1000 to spend at JR/ Duty Free and tickets to six Olympic events for two people.

“I am really looking forward to being at the athletics stadium where we will be watching the 100m and shot put finals.

“I have my black NZ supporter’s flags packed and ready to wave around,” she laughs.

What makes this trip even more momentous is that it’s the first time Annabel will meet her mother’s family in the UK. “We plan to extend the trip and spend time with family which is so exciting for both of us.”

A netball and athletics enthusiast, Annabel recently returned to Marlborough at the beginning of the year after graduating from Otago University.

Here she has been helping to manage the Premiere SMOG Stainless Steel netball team.

With regard to the recent articles in The Sun, Dave Atoa, Nelson HRV franchise owner, will be meeting with groups like Grey Power and Age Concern, to discuss the role of his company in the community, and subsequent problems that have arisen.

Shona Duncan from Grey Power said not enough elderly people are aware of their rights when a salesperson comes to their door.

“And the ones that are aware they can do something, don’t, because they don’t want to be a bother to anybody.”

She urged anyone to call the police if they feel threatened.

“The police want to hear about it.”

She said for a pre-organised appointment, having a friend, family member or neighbour present is a good idea.

“Most salespeople are trustworthy, but have the phone handy just in case.”

Russ Smith, Community Constable, said his best advice for dealing with pushy salespeople was to close the door.

“Say goodbye and close the door in their face, that’s the most effective way to deal with them.”

He supported Shona and Colin’s advice for dealing with threatening

behaviour.

“If they are pushy, close the door, but if you feel threatened, then yes, call the police by all means.”

Colin Draper, president of Grey Power, said the best way to avoid an unpleasant situation if a salesperson turned up unannounced, was to not open the door.

“Ignore the person, and if you have a security door, just say you’re not interested.”

Colin said old people don’t want to see themselves as a nuisance, but he urged them to be proactive, and pick up the phone.

An elderly resident who spoke to The Sun last week wanted assurance that salespeople at HRV who have caused upset to anyone in the community were held accountable, so the behaviour stops.

Dave said that working with representatives of the elderly community is an opportunity to illustrate all the concerns people have.

marlborough girls' college visual arts prefect lara simmons with just a few of the works from the exhibition needing sent away to their new owners.

By Robbie Parkes The new Marlborough Girls’ College Visual Arts Block is one step closer thanks to the success of a recent studentorganised exhibition.

‘Beyond the Canvas’ was the brainchild of visual arts prefects Lara Simmons and Anna Hawkins, who wanted to use the event as a fundraiser for the new building.

Students were encouraged to submit their own work so they could be displayed and auctioned off along with those by local artists.

The exhibition opened with an auction night last Friday and ran through until Sunday in the school hall.

Lara said they are still not sure on the exact amount of money raised, but it was a successful couple of days.

“It went really well, we had a great response from students and the community.”

“I think we’ve just got really talented girls at the school.”

There were at least 50 pieces of student artwork submitted which had to go through a selection process, and around 30 works by local artists were put on display.

Lara said they even had one student working at 2am the night before, and she still produced an amazing painting.

On the opening night, Lara and Anna were approached by some of the professional artists who wanted to donate even more of their earnings to the school because of how well the event had gone.

Even now, the work is ongoing.

Lara and Anna are still organising deliveries, and managing the sale of works that didn’t quite meet their reserve price.

“I’m still recovering,” said Lara.

She said the visual arts has not been a very strong area for the school in previous years, so the success of the event really means a lot.

“I would love to make it an annual thing.”

Dog registration deadline has passed

By Robbie Parkes The deadline to register your dog has passed, and it is always cheaper to pay a late fee than face a fine.

Tuesday was the final day in which owners could register without incurring extra costs, and Animal Control will now be following up on unregistered dogs.

And with around 10,000 dogs in the area, it is no small task, said Marlborough District Council animal control contract administrator Shelley Lines.

“There is always a last minute rush, and obviously over the next couple of days people realise their dogs require registration.”

“And that’s just human nature.”

She said the process has run fairly smoothly this time round, with the added bonus that fees have not increased for the past three years.

Di Davies (pictured left), kennel manager at Foxes Island Boarding Kennels in Renwick said people are required by law to register their dogs, but there are other benefits.

“If your dog gets picked up, it gets back to you immediately.”

“In my line of work, the people who take their dogs to a kennel, care enough to get them registered.”

She said it is more the SPCA that have problems with unregistered dogs.

Di has five dogs, all registered about two weeks ago.

“Registration is not that expensive for a dog in Marlborough if you do it correctly.”

It can be pricey when living on a budget, she said, but it is just another bill to pay.

Local caravan group receives defibrillator

By Robbie Parkes Marlborough members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) now have a saving grace should the worse happen in the most isolated place.

The Freemasons Charity in partnership with the Fortitude Lodge, No.64 (Bluff) has kindly donated a $3,000 defibrillator.

Marlborough Area vice chairman Kevin Addley received the piece of equipment on behalf of the group, and knows well the benefits of having such a machine on hand.

“I’ve been on the receiving end of one of these things - twice.”

Although he was at home when both instances happened, it is an important addition for the branch.

“Because we’ve got an ageing population, it’s imperative we have something like this.”

“We hope we never have to use it, at the end of the day it’s a good

safeguard. We’re so thankful for it.”

Kiwi mascot named ‘Leni’

By Robbie Parkes There won’t be any fighting over the new iPod touch at the Johnston residence.

Jimmy Johnston won the prize after suggesting the name ‘Leni’ for MCN Blenheim’s previously unnamed kiwi mascot.

The competition to name the kiwi had been running for a number of weeks, and from over 60 entries, Jimmy’s choice entered the top four, along with a pick from his own son.

‘Leni’ was voted the winner on Facebook, beating Kooper, Kelvin and Mahi.

“I’m pretty stoked,” said Jimmy, but, he did feel sorry for his son, who missed out.

Young Chefs fundraiser Jamie Perrott and Daniel Davidson are two year 12 students at Marlborough Boys College.

The fundraiser will be to the premiere of the movie - Le Chef (a French culinary comedy) this Thursday at Blenheim Top Town Cinema.

Tickets are $20 and are available from the Blenheim Top Town Cinema or the Marlborough Boys College front office.

Price includes canapes, refreshments and a great night out at the movies.

I am surprised in these economic times the Council are still looking at new wish lists.

I agree that the long awaited roundabouts in Middle Renwick Road should be done; the planting of trees down Grove Road is a nice idea at beautifying.

The Jackson and Bell Road Idea should

be allocated to New Zealand Roads.

Council should save money by not having the pocket park in Queen Street.

There is a lot of people against this.

Seymour Square, The Forum and the Library Park are so close by. Who cares if you have allocated money to this, put it somewhere else. Put our rate money to worthwhile improvements.

Dear Ed, In response to Chris Fortune’s recent verbal spray directed at Chris Davies, I would like to continue where “Disillusioned” left off, I too have seen Chris Fortune purchasing Christchurch made “pain au chocolat” from the local New World and hocking them off as locally made products at the Farmers Market which strictly prohibits the sale of anything not produced by the stall holder or from Marlborough ingredients.

Marlborough is a region that has

some of the best produce available anywhere in the country, yet some of our local producers are not allowed to sell their products due to Chris Fortunes strict rules. By embracing all producers from the region our limited market of 20 or so could easily increase making it a lively, exciting market like others around the country. How about it Mr President? Let’s all operate under the same rules.

Budding playwrights in competition finals

By Robbie Parkes A unique spin on a Christmas story has seen Bohally Intermediate into the finals of a nationwide scriptwriting competition.

Six budding writers from the school entered the ChildFund New Zealand Young Playwrights Challenge, ‘Pens Against Poverty’, creating their own interpretation of the best-selling book Mary’s Christmas Yarn.

Sammy Jarvis, Caitlyn Woodley, Grace Williams, Morgan Gurr, Em ma Ga rdiner a nd Ch loe Crawford decided to perform their script instead of just writing it.

“We were constantly thinking how will this look on the stage,” said Morgan.

“We were very visual,” said Caitlyn.

They collaborated on ideas, wrote the script together and even did the project for homework.

Caitlyn said they drew a lot of inspiration from their own lives, the Dad character being based on the personalities of their own fathers.

“The script tugs at the emotions, but it’s ridiculously cheesy,” said their teacher Rachael Moran.

They turned the main characters

into animals, and incorporated ideas relevant to their lives.

The girls were selected for the group because of their background in drama and writing, and each said they really enjoyed the experience and would definitely do it again.

Rachael worked with the girls on the project, which was initiated as a literacy extension programme in the school.

“They’ve grown so much, they were a bit unsure at first, but just to see them become confident in their writing is amazing,” said Rachael.

Competition judge and renowned actor and comedian Mark Hadlow came to the school on Monday to hear an extract of the students’ version of the play and deliver feedback.

He commended the girls for their personal touches.

“There’s some really good stuff for actors to pick up on.”

“I think what makes a great play is the emotion between the roles and the actions.”

He said we need this kind of commitment from the younger generation in order to keep theatre alive.

“It’s probably the most important

thing for the future of the development of the arts.”

“I still think we need to embrace the arts more, they are important to the essence of who we are.”

These girls are leading the way, he said. “ T hey a re ext raord ina r ily individual young ladies - that is what struck me straight away.”

Auckland’s Te Atatu Intermediate and Palmerston North Normal Intermediate are the two other finalists and were also visited by a judge this week.

Southern Jam begins The Southern Jam Youth Jazz Festival kicks off today with local venues around town hosting a range of performances.

Free public gigs are being held throughout the week at various cafes, bars and clubs.

The event brings South Island Secondary Schools together to perform around the region and compete against other schools.

The festival will end on Saturday with a Gala Concert to be held at Marlborough Boys’ College at 7.30 pm.

So grab your favourite cupcake recipe, get your mixer ready and fire up your oven for SPCA’s Cupcake Day.

Winemaking, cooking and animals might seem an unusual combination, but for Sophie Matthews they are the ingredients which make up her happy life, as Celeste Lodewyk finds out.

This month Sophie will be setting aside time from her busy role as assistant to the wine making team at Marisco Vineyards to support a local organisation close to her heart – SPCA. SPCA Marlborough is holding its annual Cupcake Day on Monday, August 27 and to help promote the event Sophie is donning her brightly coloured baker’s apron and heading into the kitchen.

Baking with her mother and grandmother, and taking in rescue cats is something Sophie has vivid memories of from her childhood.

“My mother f i r m ly b e l i eve d i n rescuing c a t s needing a good home so we had many th roughout the years I was growing up. I can even remember every one of their names.

“Those memories, as well as spending hours in the kitchen with my mother and grandmother, baking and cooking were some of my happiest times as a child,” she smiles.

Her early found passion for rescue animals grew more in her high school years.

“When completing community service for my Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s award I spent a lot of time volunteering for the SPCA. “So when I moved to Marlborough to take on my

job at Marisco Vineyards at the beginning of this year I decided to continue on with SPCA volunteering.

“It’s proven to be a great way of meeting new people,” she says.

Recognising her talent in the kitchen, SPCA Cupcake Day organisers quickly enlisted Sophie’s help.

“It’s no secret that I love to cook and bake. I regularly take cakes and tasty treats into the winery and SPCA office so it’s natural that I help out with this fundraiser,” she laughs.

Although Sophie won’t personally be baking for the fundraiser, she is still receiving requests from work colleagues for animal themed cupcakes.

“One of my favourite recipes is for Red Velvet cupcakes with cream cheese frosting, so I may make some of these. I first tasted these when travelling through America, and over there they are very generous with their frosting,” she laughs.

For the fundraiser Sophie is looking for one or more local businesses with cooking facilities to bake the cupcakes.

“This way there are no issues with food safety,” she says.

Pre-orders are being taken and cupcakes will be baked to order and delivered personally by SPCA Marlborough volunteers.

“We are hoping to raise around $3 per cupcake, and one idea we had for businesses was that employers match what their employees donate.

“It’s a tasty way to show community spirit while enjoying a morning tea.”

By Annabelle Latz The Renwick Marching Club is donating all the money raised at this evening’s housie to the Gilchrist family in Renwick, to help five year-old Sophie who is at Ronald McDonald House receiving treatment for Leukemia.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

Doors open at 7pm at the Giesen Centre, Uxbridge St. Sophie was diagnosed on July 9, and her mum Michelle and dad Bryan are very grateful for all the community support they have received so far.

For the next two years, Sophie will receive weekly treatments of chemo-

therapy; in the mean time that will happen in Christchurch, and hopefully in the near future Sophie can receive treatment at Nelson Hospital.

Sophie and her six year-old sister Izabel are both students at Renwick School.

Times are very hard for the family at the moment, and Izabel is receiving great support from her grandparents in Marlborough, who are looking after her while her family is in Christchurch, although Bryan is up frequently for work.

The Renwick Post Shop has also got behind Sophie’s cause, and has placed a collection tin on the front counter for customers to add their spare change to.

Rachelle Neal works at the post shop, and said the Gilchrist’s are familiar faces through the door .

“And a few people have been in recently to send parcels to Sophie in Christchurch.”

She would like the community support to fill the collection box.

“Come in and support Sophie, donations are more than welcome.”

By Robbie Parkes Annies Marlborough has been awarded funding for a postgraduate student to join their team in the research and development department.

The Blenheim-based company is one of 70 businesses to receive a cut of $2.1 million from the Vote Science and Innovation programme administered by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

The incentive allocates each applicant a maximum of $30,000 (plus GST) to cover the costs of hiring a postgraduate student for the first six months.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity if we put our time and effort into it, and it’s going to

go both ways,” said Annies food technologist Marion McNeilly.

The natural food company has done variations of the internship programme in the past and Marion said it is always a great experience.

“They’ll get to come to a great region.”

“It’s a really fun, friendly, enthusiastic place to work. It’s not just hum-drum.”

They get to be part of a New Zealand company that caters to the international market, she said.

“They’ll be looking at one particular part of the process and will probably be hands on in the plant, research and development area.”

Blenheim project chosen as a finalist in national awards A Blenheim project has been chosen as a finalist in the 2012 New Zealand Wood Resene Timber Design Awards in the interior innovation category.

Cloudy Bay Shack entered by Paul Rolfe Architects in association with Tonkin Zulaikha Greer Architects, is a rural guesthouse overlooking the landscape of the Wairau river alluvial plane on the Cloudy Bay Estate, near Blenheim.

The interior is predominantly lined with NZ pine plywood and timber. At the ground floor, the corridors are lined with angled timber blades to conceal the iconic view before arrival in the entertaining area.

There were 93 entries across the nine categories, more than three times the number in 2011 and a record in the more than 30 year his-

tory of the Timber Design Awards.

Of these, 38 have been selected for second stage judging which requires the entrant to provide greater detail.

“Winning a NZ Wood Resene Timber Design Award provides a competitive edge that is compelling in a marketplace that values expertise.

“The Awards cater to such expertise, and they help draw a line in the sand between mediocrity and brilliance. In these tough economic times, what better way to do this than to put your work forward to be judged alongside your peers,” says NZ Wood CEO Jane Arnott.

Winners will be announced at an awards evening on 9 October in Auckland Right: The lounge room of the Cloudy Bay Shack.

Big LATCH ON Join us Let’s break the record for the most women breastfeeding at the same time!

Last year Marlborough saw a record number of 44 mothers attend the annual Big Latch On event.

The Big Latch On was started in 2005 and has grown into an international event. Groups of breastfeeding mothers come together at registered locations to all latch on their child at a set time and are counted.

Numbers are added up and compared to previous records.

This Friday the Big Latch On is being held again at the Clubs of Marlborough, hosted

These are all important questions that can be answered by phone, text, email or home visit by experienced and trained breast feeding professionals who themselves are local mothers.

These women form the local voluntary organisation Mum 4 Mum Wairau, a breast feeding support programme.

Marlborough Kart Track

Thrilling kart action set for Saturday For those in the community who have yet to experience the thrill and excitement of go-kart racing, this Saturday is set to serve up a treat.

Marlborough Kart Club will be hosting a very exciting event; the AME Enduro Race Day which will feature eight local ‘celebrity’ motorsport drivers.

These drivers have achieved not only titles and accolades in their chosen motorsports, but many have also represented New Zealand on the world stage.

Each of the celebrity drivers have been paired and will compete in a one-hour endurance race around the track.

In addition they will each have their own race cars and motocross bikes on display for the public to see and learn

more about.

This celebrity race is being run in conjunction with the club’s own Enduro Race Day. Competitors will be coming from as far as Christchurch to compete for club points, prizes and trophies.

Up for grabs will be the Pete Hutchison Memorial Trophy, prizes for the most laps, class winners and a number of spot prizes.

The day has been designed for the public to go along, meet our local and visiting kart drivers and get a taste of the sport for themselves.

There will be food and drink available

Local celebrity drivers Paddy North – Motorsport history includes motocross, speedway production saloons, speedway A-grade saloons and currently racing speedway super saloons. Paddy competed in the 2010 Valvoline Trans Tasman Challenge in Australia (Kiwi Super Saloons v Aussie Late Models).

Dave Noad – Foundation and life member of Marlborough Kart Club and has been a convenor and winner of local street sprints, NZ sprint nationals, and Kart Sunbelt Championships in Nelson and Marlborough.

Warren Croft – Motorsport experience includes six hour endurance racing in a Holden Commodore alongside John Wadsworth.

Russell Greer – Known on the NZ, Australia, England and Europe circuits Russell races a Lola Formula 5000 T332 and a Stanton Corvette. He began racing stock cars in the 1960’s and went on to win numerous motorsport titles including the NZ Hillclimb Champion in 1980.

Richard Bateman – President of the Marlborough Car Club, Richard has been involved in rally driving for around eight years. This Saturday will be his first time racing in a kart.

Along with fellow Marlborough drivers such as Paddy North and Richard Bateman, Russell will compete in the AME Enduro Race Day at the Marlborough Kart Club track.

“Last time I drove a Go-Kart was for fun 20 years ago,” he said.

“I’m really looking forward to it.”

The race is in support of the Club, but like every competition a bit of friendly rivalry is to be expected.

Go-Karting seems to be where all the young stars are kicking off their careers, said Russell.

“As soon as they can walk, they’re in karts.”

Given the racing culture in Marlborough, he said it is a great way for young drivers to make a name for themselves.

“There’s been some very good drivers come out of Blenheim who fly under the radar.”

For Russell, motorsport has been a lifelong passion and today, work

just fills in the time when he is not racing.

He started off working on hotrods when he was an apprentice, starting in the motorsport scene around 1968.

“I was probably one of the original boy racers, that’s why I don’t give them any grief nowadays.”

By Annabelle Latz They could call themselves professional sports people, even if it was just for half an hour.

It was a day away from the vines for eight of Marlborough’s young viticulturists recently, as they muscled against each other at the Markhams Young Viticulturalist of the year competition.

It took place at Marlborough Research Centre on Budge St. It was a day of practical and theoretical assessment, but things lightened up at lunch time for the Horti Sports competition.

This included a range of activity stations from putting together wheelbarrows and respiratory units to performing CPR and showing off their landscape painting skills.

Hannah Taylor, who works in the vineyard at Villa Maria Estate, said the day was great because competitors had to get out their comfort zone.

“It’s a great challenge,” she said.

Brad Newton described himself as a ‘budding viticulturalist’ at Vavasour Wines, a division of Foley Family Wines.

He said this event is great for upping skills.

RDA regional games brings the crowds

By Robbie Parkes The Marlborough Riding for the Disabled ribbon day ended up a being bigger event than first thought.

The blenheim-based branch hosts many of the large events in the region due to the facilities, and the ribbon day this weekend turned into the association’s regional games.

The Special Olympics committee had asked the Marlborough RDA to host the games, and the sudden change did not effect the enjoyment felt on the day.

“We had 35 riders from all around the country, and it was really lovely,” said head coach Roslein Wilkes.

“We had presentations for medals and rosettes, everyone went home with a smile.”

Around 100 friends, family and supporters came out for the competition, watching riders in the working trails, egg and spoon races, jousting games and a range of other events on Saturday.

Sunday was a full dressage day.

Jennifer Healey, 15, from Blenheim, rode her bay gelding Murphy in the competitions, and really enjoyed the events.

“I just like riding around, it’s good exercise.”

Fellow Blenheim rider Rory Kearse, 12, got in on the action with his chestnut mare Sarna.

“I like playing the games,” he said.

Roslein said it was a great weekend for everyone, the weather came out, and the horses were all well behaved.

She said they had been extremely busy in the last fortnight with their open day, auction dinner and now the regional games.

She anticipates the ribbon day will be held early September.

Making steps in the fashion world Student could be the next fashion icon

By Robbie Parkes Lara Campbell may well become New Zealand’s Next Fashion Icon.

The Marlborough Girls’ College student entered the competition for the Erin Simpson show in May, and through public voting made it through to the final four.

Lara had to submit six clothing designs, of which one would be made and presented on the programme.

She was flown down to Christchurch last Tuesday to film the episode where her successful design would be featured, along with the three other finalists’.

The winner was named in the programme, but Lara is sworn to secrecy until it is broadcast this Friday.

“It was such a good atmosphere, the other three girls that I met were really nice,” said Lara.

“Erin herself was so much fun, when we finished she was still bouncing around in high heels.”

Lara said she was excited to make it to the finals, considering it was her first real fashion competition.

“I entered it really just for fun.”

She has only been interested in fashion design for the last two years, an enthusiasm she attributes to her textiles teacher Claire Johnston.

“Ms Johnston was absolutely wonderful, she’s just so passionate about it.”

“I just started to love it.”

The subject introduced Lara to a mix between art and functional drawing, a concept that really inspired her.

“You get some really interesting ideas.”

Her collection was titled It’s all in the Packing, and her designs were influenced by an alpine trip and her experiences in a snow cave.

She said she liked to play with shapes and different ideas but kept it high-end at the same time.

“I’m a bit of a different case, I’m really interested in Haute Couture.”

Haute Couture basically means custom-fitted clothing, of high quality with extreme attention to detail.

It is a time consuming practice, one that Lara admits has kept her until midnight.

She is deciding whether to follow fashion as a profession or chemical engineering.

“It takes a lot to get into the industry, and if you go off on your own, you have to have a lot of capital.”

More than likely, it will end up as a hobby, she said.
