Pool cool?

Not so says manager

By Adam Poulopoulos A Marlborough parent says she has taken her daughter out of swimming lessons for the winter due to draughty, cold conditions at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000.

Leah Rendle takes her two-and-a-half year-old daughter to lessons, but says the draught her daughter feels by the paddling pool after her lessons is severe.

She says she experiences a similar problem in the family changing room, where her daughter’s lips have turned blue because of the cold.

Leah says the water temperature could be warmer too.

“They’re (the pools) not particularly warm, but it’s all right and you get used to it.

“We go to the aquatic centre over in Richmond and it’s nice and toasty-warm.”

Another woman, who declined to be named, says she has used the stadium’s two-metre-deep sports pool for about a year due to arthritis.

Cold air hampers swimmers Continued from Page 1.

“It’s OK in summer, but now it’s cold and when you travel from out of town you expect to get into a warm pool.

“I know a lot of ladies with physical problems who used to go and have stopped, and it was probably because of that.”

Not everyone agrees the pools are too cold.

“They just do what they’re told.

They run around at home with bare feet in the winter and don’t take much notice.”

Stadium 2000 CEO Paul Tredinnick agrees the draught is a problem, and says installation work on a door at the pool entrance has begun.

He says the idea was to create a less humid environment, but in the process too much air was being pushed out and a draught had been created.

He says a solution could be in place at the end of next month.

Regarding the water temperatures, Paul says they are measured at least three times daily, and there was no record of missing their targets.

Paul says the targets are on the warmer side when measured nationwide.

They range from 27 degrees Celsius in the sports pool to 38°C in the spa.

The targets have remained unchanged since the stadium opened, and do not include the

unheated outdoor pool.

The heated pools are warmed by a ground water heat pump supplemented by a diesel boiler.

Paul says they could make a change if the public wholly supported it.

“If we found people want them a lot hotter, we have some heating up our sleeve.

“However, the energy cost would go ballistic and if we did change it the community would have to pay for it.”

Police out in force for long weekend Police across Tasman District will be focussed on road safety this coming Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

District Road Policing Senior Sergeant Grant Andrews says all available staff will be out on the roads working to keep people safe.

He says officers would be checking driver speed, alcohol,

safety belts and distractions.

“At this time of year I can’t stress enough how important it is to drive to the conditions and be a bit patient.”

He says all drivers stopped should expect to be breath tested.

“Our message is simple around alcohol – if you’re drinking, don’t drive. Plan before you go out how you are going to get home safely.”

The usual four km speed tolerance will also be enforced over the holiday weekend.

“All of the crash statistics show us that speed is the one factor that impacts most on the severity of people’s injuries in a crash. If everyone slows down then everyone has a much better chance of getting home again,” he says.

“Our focus in road policing is to

reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roads and every person who gets behind the wheel of a car has a role to play in that.

I encourage all drivers to think about the choices they make and the consequences those choices could have.”

The official holiday period begins at 4pm on Friday 29 May and ends at 6am on Tuesday 2 June.

The annual ‘Fly-In’ event is being

held by the Blenheim Model Aero Club on Saturday and Sunday from 9am.

CONTAINER ON THE MOVE Marlborough’s container of supplies for the people of Vanuatu is set to begin its journey to the Cyclone Pam-ravaged country next week.

The container has spent most of its time outside John’s Kitchen at the Crossroads where people have been able to donate, amongst other things, building materials and tools for the rebuild.

The container leaves for Auckland today and will be on its way to Port Vila on Thursday.

BELINDA WINS AWARD Former Marlborough resident Belinda Darrell was awarded a rising star award at the Leading Property Managers of New Zealand awards last week.

Belinda now works at B & N Properties in Ashburton.

She moved to Marlborough in 1999, arriving with her family from South Africa.

She attended Marlborough Girls’ College and NMIT before moving to Christchurch in 2011, and Ashburton two years later.

Twenty-six years at the helm

By Adam Poulopoulos A desire to spend more time with family and friends was the main trigger for Richard Gilbert to sell the Powerboat Centre after 26 years in charge.

Richard and partner Dianne Kennedy’s final day on Grove Road is today, while new owner Pete Walters’s first day of trading is the Tuesday after Queen’s Birthday Weekend.

It is the end of an era for Richard, who worked for Powerboat Centre in his home town, Christchurch, before relocating to Blenheim. He built the local Powerboat Centre and started it in October 1989.

Before working at the Christchurch Powerboat Centre Richard was a spray painter and owned a clothing business, and he says he has been a business owner for about the last four decades.

“I’ve always been at the coalface,” he says.

“It’s time to put my energy back into family and friends who I have neglected for some time.”

In 26 years Richard says he has had great customers and made good friends, but the business has not been without its difficulties.

He says the recession and blue cod regulations saw him reduce the number of staff in the business.

“The saying is you cut the cloth to suit.

Richard Gilbert is stepping away from the Powerboat Centre after 26 years in charge.

“They were probably two things to hit every business and every industry.”

Richard has tried to sell the business “for about four or five years.”

With the market improving, he put it back on the market at the end of last year and received interest.

“Last summer a lot of people said they had

never seen so much boating activity out on the water,” he says.

Richard and Dianne are moving to Christchurch to be closer to family and explore new opportunities, although he says his next move will not be into retail.

New owner Pete Walter’s is also the owner of Marlborough Marine at Koromiko.

Dressmaker returns to Blenheim

“There’s a huge need here. People are leaving town to go and get dresses done when they can have them done here.

“I’m not trying to poach the other dressmaker’s customers – I’m trying to work in with them.”

Queen’s Birthday Monday 1 June 2015 Marlborough District Council, Blenheim office will be closed on Queen’s Birthday.

Kerbside Collection: Rubbish and recycling scheduled to be collected on Queen’s Birthday; Monday 1 June will be collected on Tuesday 2 June 2015.

Please have your recycling crate and Council rubbish bags placed on the kerb by 7.30 am.

Temporary Bridge Closure Hodder River Suspension Bridge Marlborough Roads wishes to advise the Hodder River Suspension Bridge will be closed to all vehicles as it is undergoing major structural repairs. The bridge will be closed from: 25 May 2015 to 13 July 2015 There is another adjacent ford which is only suitable for heavy commercial or 4WD vehicles.

It is not suitable for light vehicles. There is no alternative bypass route for light vehicles.

Cuppa for a Charity in the Chamber Councillors Jenny Andrews, Jessica Bagge, Cynthia Brooks and Laressa Shenfield hosted their second ‘cuppa for a cause’ in the Council Chamber - the guests this year were those who have worked to support women with breast cancer in Marlborough.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman welcomed the guests, acknowledging the enormous amount of voluntary work that is done to support the community.

“The afternoon tea is just a small way for us to acknowledge the work of women in the region and to raise

funds for a good cause while at the same time bringing people into the Council Chamber, some of whom have never stepped inside the door before,” said Councillor Jenny Andrews.

The women councillors provided the afternoon tea, raising $462 for the Cancer Society.

National Litter Survey This is not the untidiest place in the country but there is plenty of room to clean up our act.

Blenheim is one of eight urban areas surveyed as part of a national litter survey, the first time such a survey has been done for more than a decade.

The survey was done by the Public Place Recycling Scheme, which looked at eight towns and cities.

The results showed that, nationwide, food packaging is the most common type of bulky, visible litter, followed by drinks bottles.

Taking into account the smallest items of litter, like cigarette butts and broken glass, the survey showed an average of 914 pieces of litter per one thousand square metres.

Blenheim compares well

with the national average except in the level of litter generated by drinks packaging – the number of glass and plastic bottles littering our town.

Place Recycling could be expanded here as part of its Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

and who qualify for this assistance. The Council oversees this scheme in conjunction with the New Zealand Transport Agency.

• Rates rebates - there is a sliding scale of rates rebates available, depending on age and income. More information is available at the Council, either in printed form or from a customer service staff member at the front counter.

Smoke free?

The council should consider making the Picton water front smoke free.

My husband and I took our eight month old daughter to the Picton foreshore for a nice day out.

Some people were smoking, not far from where we were having our picnic.

The foreshore is a family friendly area, people are there to enjoy the sunshine and fresh air.

Second hand cigarette really ruins this.

Wellington is making their water front smoke free. Its time we do it too.

Good for some Once again supermarkets advertising spend $200, save 40cents on fuel.

Gift for premature babies Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk There are many challeges faced by parents of premature babies, but one local organisation aims to help by making a warm donation.

The Renwick Plunket Group has been busy making merino blankets for Wairau Hospital’s neonatal ward, which are being offered to families free of charge.

“We hope this can be a continuous project as the benefits of using merino fabric are wonderful, particularly to babies.

It really is one of those miracle fabrics,” Renwick Plunket Group co-ordinator Wendy Adam says.

This is something she knows first hand after having had premature twin boys.

“It was important to keep them warm so they could grow, and what I loved most about

using merino was that it helped to regulate the babies body temperature.

“Merino produces warmth in winter without overheating and it keeps your baby cooler on summer nights because it draws moisture off the skin to the outside of the fabric,” she says.

The group has been making and selling merino blankets for a number of years as a way of fundraising to help provide an accessible Plunket nurse clinic service and weekly Plunket playgroup in Renwick.

The sales also enable the group to be able to gift blankets to the neonatal ward.

The Renwick Plunket Group has a Facebook page from which it sells the merino blankets at $40 each or two for $75.

Patients getting better service says minister Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says the latest quarterly health target results show Nelson Marlborough DHB is making good progress.

“These results are a credit to the health professionals in Nelson and Marlborough,” says Dr Coleman.

“Ninety six per cent of emergency department patients in NMDHB were admitted, discharged or transferred within six hours.

“Nationally the shorter stays in emergency departments target has been met for the first time – despite the increasing number of patients presenting to emergency departments.”

Meeting the target is a significant achievement.

“It is a tribute to the staff in Nelson and Marlborough.

We know that emergency departments only work well when the rest of the hospital is working well too.”

NMDHB surpassed the 100 per cent elective surgery target by four per cent.

“DHBs remain focused on reducing waiting times for elective first specialist assessments

Blenheim has few litter hotspots Discarded drink bottles have been pinpointed as one of the biggest sources of litter around Blenheim.

A national survey of eight centres, including Blenheim, confirmed that food and drinks packaging is a major source of litter.

In Blenheim, drinks packaging made up 25% of litter, compared with the 19% average figure shown across the eight towns and cities.

The survey, conducted by the Public Place Recycling Scheme is an industry-funded initiative promoting recycling, supported by 30 councils around the country including the MDC. The Scheme aims to reduce packaging litter by 10% by 2020 and is promoting more recycling opportunities and more anti-litter education to meet this target.

Marlborough District Council solid waste manager Alec McNeill says more recycling ideas are being examined as part of Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

“We would like to see more people getting easier access to recycling services around Marlborough.

We’ve already calculated that we could save up to 400 tonnes of domestic waste going into the landfill each year by building up recycling opportunities in our townships and we could also consider recycling away from home in public places such as the Blenheim and Picton CBDs and the Picton foreshore.”

“The Public Place Recycling Scheme puts emphasis on having recycling bins located in the right places and next to rubbish bins.

The recycling bins need to be both practical for emptying and clearly marked to tell the public which material goes in which bin.”

Mr McNeill says, by and large, Blenheim was a clean and tidy town but there were some litter hotspots and broken glass was a perennial problem.

“The fact that there is not a huge amount of litter around on our streets may just suggest that we have a pretty good service from our street-cleaning contractor. But it would be even better if it became unacceptable to drop litter in the first place.”

For Marlburian, Bex, 35, the daughter of Blenheim community constable Russ Smith and former real estate agent Jackie Herkt, and Northlander, Richard, their daughter’s arrival on January 4 “has been a bright light in a dark time” as Richard continues to battle cancer which sees him largely bed-ridden.

FIFA arrests made Football world governing body FIFA is one of the world’s most powerful sporting identities, thought for years to be beyond reproach or question.

All that changed this week.

Seven FIFA officials were arrested in Switzerland on corruption charges, including racketeering, wire fraud and money laundering, earlier this week, with 14 indicted altogether.

They are alleged to have enriched themselves through the worldwide corruption of football.

President Sepp Blatter was not one of those arrested.

US attorney-general Loretta Lynch has stated the alleged corruption is “rampant, systemic, and deep-rooted,” both in America

at the helm.

Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan, who is running against him, has been quick to emphasise the need for change.

FIFA has long been dogged by corruption rumours, and officials say the arrests are just the beginning of the investigation.

The arrests threaten to overshadow the FIFA under-20 men’s World Cup, which is being held in New Zealand starting tomorrow.

The tournament will feature players who all hold hopes of making their full national sides for those tournaments in Russia and Qatar.

For Blenheim residents Wellington and Christchurch are the closest host centres.

By Jacob Page Hayden Paddon and Blenheim’s John Kennard may have had to settle for eighth after being involved in a dog-fight for sixth at Rally Portugal, but the duo is still happy with their speed.

Paddon described his fourth event of the 2015 FIA World Rally Championship season as “an up and down weekend” and, although he’d hoped for a top five result, he’s feeling encouraged by the relative closeness of his times to the rally’s podium finishers.

“To put it in context, we were closer to the leaders here compared to last year’s Rally Australia, where we finished sixth, and this year’s Rally Sweden when we secured our best-ever WRC result to date with a fifth place,” Paddon said.

Driving for the Hyundai Mobis World Rally Team, Paddon and Kennard started Sunday’s short leg of just three special stages in a solid seventh position.

But the struggle to find pace on worn tyres meant the Kiwis were forced to settle for eighth overall.

“Firstly, I would like to say thanks to the team for fixing the car after our issues with a rock at the end of Saturday, which allowed us to get back out this morning.

Our objective was to push through until the end, which we did with no real dramas.

Paddon now returns to his European base in Frankfurt and Kennard to his Marlborough vineyard, where the two will continue their preparation for the Italian WRC round running 11 to 14 June.

Air Force league showdown

By Adam Poulopoulos The coach of the Woodbourne base rugby league team says spectators will see a full-blooded weekend of action in the annual inter base encounter.

Woodbourne will be playing Auckland and Ohakea at the Royal New Zealand Air Force Woodbourne Sports Fields next month.

Auckland and Ohakea face off at 3pm on Friday, June 5. Woodbourne play the loser of that game at 2pm on June 6, and the winner at 2pm on June 7.

It is the first time in five years the tournament has been held in Blenheim.

From the tournament an Air Force team will be selected to contest the inter services tournament in September.

Woodbourne coach Alexander Netana

says the prize means his players will be up for the tournament.

“It’s not a friendly match as such eh… it’s a real crowd-pleaser.

“It (the RNZAF Rugby League Cup) gives them the desire to win.”

He says his team will go in as underdogs.

“It’s a first start for the majority of the boys to be honest.

“We’ve just come together and we’ll hope for the best really.”

BASKETBALL Marlborough’s Hamish Penlington has been named coach of the Tasman Under-17 girls’ basketball team who will play in Auckland in July. The team itself will be named later in the week.

Joining them in Auckland is Jake Southey, who has been named in the boys’ squad.

Lina Pale, Ella Donald and Billie Watson have all been named in the under-15 girls’ side, with Anzac Rissetto and Renz Narvadez in the boys’ team.

Both of those teams play in Wellington in July.

Central Pirates have taken out round one of Mayfield Motorworld Senior Division One football, but were pushed all the way by BV Development.

Pirates beat Biddy Kate’s Rangers 3-1 on Saturday with Development beating BV Masters 5-1.

Both teams finished with a +17 goal difference, but Pirates took it out after scoring one extra goal.

Rangers United took out round one in division two, beating Clubs of Marlborough 5-1 on Saturday to finish a point clear of Redwood Renegades and Picton Crow Tavern.

The second round gets under way this weekend.

RUGBY None of Marlborough’s division one rugby teams could register a win in the penultimate round-robin round of the Tasman Trophy on Saturday.

With the final round this weekend, Waimea Old Boys and Wanderes are comfortably clear in first and second, with Central the best-placed Marlborough team in third.

In tomorrow’s round Renwick hosts Marist as part of their centenary celebrations, while all other teams play in Nelson.

Central plays Waimea in the curtainraiser to the Crusaders-Hurricanes game at Trafalgar Park tonight.

FUNDRAISER

Special Olympics Marlborough is holding two sausage sizzles this weekend to raise money for Nepal.

They will be held at The Warehouse tomorrow and on Monday.
