Airshow sure to be a cracker

By Chris Tobin This weekend’s Omaka Classic Fighters Air show is shaping up as the best ever, according to airshow spokesperson Alex Robins.

“The weather is looking the best it has been allowing aircraft to get here from all over the country,” he said.

More than 100 aircraft and thousands of people, some from Australia, the UK and the United States including over 45 media representatives, are expected for the show.

A flyover of Nelson and Blenheim on Wednesday by an Avro Anson and two Nanchang aircraft had seen a rush to buy tickets, Mr Robins said.

“There was a lot of media coverage and coupled with the weather has led to a surge of sales.”

He said ticket sales had already exceeded all records. The gold pass tickets (1000 tickets costing $350) had just about sold out.

Saturday’s platinum tickets (($250 each) have sold out.

“We’re very happy with the progress and the public interest.”

Money raised from the airshow is channelled back into the Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre. Mr Robins said he could not disclose the costs and profitability of the show.

Hamish Bush of Ashburton, and Mike Tripae of Kapiti assemble the Tiger I for the reenactment show during this weekend's airshow. Tiger I is the common name of a German heavy tank developed in 1942 and used in World War II.

Practice flying will be held today and a twilight entertainment show starts at 5pm.

Saturday and Sunday are the main show days with the programmes running from 10am to 3.30pm. Gates open at 8am.

Mr Robins said Sunday was a good family day.

“That’s the day we blow things up and have real fun with our toys; it’s an ideal day to bring young kids.”

Aero club celebrating 85 years This weekend’s Classic Fighters Airshow will mark the celebration of Marlborough Aero Club’s 85th Anniversary with the return of aircraft originally built or based at Omaka.

Officially formed on July 4, 1928, and with a bold claim of ‘first in flying’, Marlborough Aero Club celebrates 85 years of training pilots and fostering general aviation.

Marlborough Aero Club became the first club in the country to commence flying operations in February 1929, using a government loaned Gipsy Moth.

On March 9 of that year, the first owned aircraft arrived at Omaka, another Gipsy Moth carrying New

Zealand’s first registered aircraft mark of ZK-AAA. “Our aviation forefathers had the vision and passion to establish a trail blazing club that embraced the future of aviation,” club president, Craig Anderson said.

Returning to Omaka this weekend will be the Yak-3 (restored at Omaka), Focke-Wulf Fw190 (based at Omaka since 2011), the Avro Anson (based at Omaka since restoration was completed last year), a gaggle of Nanchangs (based at Omaka since 1995), as well as the rare, restored Fox Moth (ZK APT) that was first owned by the club in 1947.

This restored Fox Moth refuelling at Molesworth, Lake McRae, in 1949, which will return to Omaka at the weekend.

By Chris Tobin Save Our Services’ petition against the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board proposal to cut acute services at Wairau Hospital will continue in spite of the health board pulling the pin on the plan.

“The petition will be at the airshow this weekend,” Jessica Bagge, coleader of Save Our Services said.

“We need accountability from the board and we need to maintain this pressure to make sure it doesn’t happen again.”

As of Wednesday a total of 2678 signed the petition since it was officially launched at the Sun office at midday on Monday, March 11.

The petition was then circulated throughout Marlborough and Ms Bagge and Save Our Services coleader Stuart Smith urged people to still return the forms.

“It would be disrespectful to the people who’ve signed the petition if we didn’t continue.”

The petition would still be presented to the Minister of Health Tony Ryall.

On Wednesday in Nelson, the

health board agreed unanimously that 24/7 acute services, including elective services would remain at Wairau Hospital.

Both Ms Bagge and Mr Smith believed public pressure forced the health board to back-track on its proposal – firstly a public meeting attended by 1000 people in Blenheim and then the public backlash as revealed through the petition.

The health board chair Jenny Black said feedback from the public and staff were “carefully considered” by the board including verbal reports from herself and the the chief executive Chris Fleming who attended the Blenheim public meeting.

The board has approved also the establishment of a clinically led project group under the guidance of Mr Fleming to improve health services at Nelson and Wairau hospitals.

Asked if Marlborough would be represented on the project group which would comprise an independent clinical advisor, consumers, medical staff and others, Ms Black did not respond.

‘Still not a final outcome’ While welcoming the Nelson District Health Board’s decision to retain acute services at Wairau Hospital, Marlborourgh Mayor Alistair Sowman also sounded a warning.

“I am pleased to see that, for now, there will be no move against essential services at Wairau Hospital but it is clear that we are still some way from a final outcome.

Staffing of Wairau Hospital’s information desk is still being reviewed, says the hospital.

Wednesday’s issue of the Sun reported Hospice Marlborough volunteers who man the information desk at the hospital were worried they could be replaced by a fulltime person. The hospice receives an annual grant from the Nelson Marlborough District Council for the service.

Wairau Hospital’s service manager Becky Olsen said it was a standard two year review of a contract.

“No decision has been made about volunteers or fulltime staff or any other combination of staffing,” she said.

“The review is in progress and no final decision will be made without discussion with all parties involved.”

Radio station... in a bedroom

By Kat Duggan Marlborough has recently gained a new radio station, which is being run from a bedroom.

Owner and operator, Johnny Miller, started One Eyed FM in Christchurch in 2010, and after the region’s magnitude 6.3 earthquake, in February 2011, the station had to relocate.

“The February quake destroyed the studio, with me sitting in it, there was no power, the lights went out, and I was physically thrown around the studio, I was actually scared.”

Mr Miller and his family packed up and left Christchurch, eventually deciding on Blenheim, where they set up the studio in a cousin’s house, until moving into their own.

The studio is now set up in Mr Miller’s bedroom, where he puts the shows together.

The network provides listeners with news and weather updates, as well as music from the last three decades and today.

Mr Miller has also set up internet TV, which allows people to watch interviews or coverage of events via Ustream, and he said this could now be accessed on smart TVs. One Eyed FM is a registered charitable trust, and aims to put all profits, bar running costs, back into the community.

He is looking for support of the Blenheim public, through advertising, as well as listening and following the network.

Moa Brewing Company has lodged resource consent application with the Marlborough District Council to upgrade and expand its Jacksons Road brewery in Blenheim. The project will cost $6 million.

The district council established the events strategy position after a request from Grow Marlborough, a group of tourism and retail operators, who wanted action taken to retain and attract major events to the region.

The first pre-cast panels for the new Speight's Ale House being built in Middle Renwick Road, Blenheim, were installed yesterday. Builder Hamish Ryan said 13 panels would be installed and should be in place by the end of next week. Mr Ryan said it could be up to six months before the ale house is completed. Blenheim man John Derry is the developer of the new bar and restaurant.

The only thing they may not know is that I have had seven daughters and am about to become a grandmother for the second time.

Scam letter in Marlborough

Playcentre on fundraising mission

By Kat Duggan Blenheim Playcentre has raised just over $1500 to go towards the redevelopment of their Outdoor Learning Environment.

Blenheim Playcentre parent, Stacey Inwood, said the day had been fairly successful, with a good turn out.

“We sold a lot of stuff, and

lots of people commented on the good quality of the stuff we had, thanks to Playcentre members, and the public who donated goods.

“The kids loved the bouncy castle and the face painting too, so that was cool.”

Ms Inwood said the raffle

was yet to be draw, which would be happening today, so there was still more money coming in.

Playcentre needs between $40,000 and $60,000 to do the redevelopment, and will be holding more fundraisers to find the money, including a movie night next term.

By Kat Duggan Blenheim woman, Margaret Anderson, wants to warn people in Marlborough about a scam letter which was sent to her home recently.

The letter was addressed from a so-called London based finance company, ‘Lloyds Financial Services Ltd.’ and offered Ms Anderson 30% of just over 15 million US dollars, if she provided them with a bank account number to put the money into.

Ms Anderson searched the company on the internet, and discovered that a number of people had received the same letter, in different parts of the world.

“I knew it was a scam straight away, but I wanted to warn people because I hate the thought that they might suck someone in, get their account number and clear it out.

“It could come out to [more] people in the Marlborough area, because they’re obviously trolling Marlborough phone records,” Ms Anderson said.

She believes her address details were discovered through the White Pages, as the name

From the comments found online, it is clear that the person responsible for the letters is using the exact same letter, company name and contact details, but is changing the last name of the deceased,

as well as the name of the director of “Lloyds Financial Services.”

Some had also received follow up phone-calls after being sent the letter, from individuals with poor English, checking if the offer had reached them.

Work on black spot intersection to begin A notorious Marlborough black spot, the intersection of State Highway 1 and Alabama Rd in Riverlands near Blenheim, will be improved.

Marlborough Roads manager Frank Porter told the Marlbrough District Council's regional transport com-

mittee meeting on Friday that the New Zealand Transport Agency had agreed to fund the upgrade to the intersection widely known as Butter Factory Road.

Work could begin in July or August and should be completed by Christmas The project is expected

to cost between $600,000 and $800,000 and would involve moving the curve of the state highway closer to the Opawa River which would allow traffic to wait safely clear from the railway line when turning from Alabama Rd into the state highway.

MBC places third in softball Marlborough Boys' College placed third in the New Zealand Seconary Schools' Division 1 tournament in Auckland last week.

The team was defending its title but this time round it wasn't to be.

“It was a very good effort from our boys considering we had a young pitcher and he did his best,” coach and coordinator Helen Joseph said.

Players that featured through the tournament were Tailah Love, Nixon Kim, Tyler Bird, Nicholas Kelly and Nick DeBoo The new players Tyler Aldridge, Brayden Jennison and Joshua Ludemann all played well when they took the diamond, said Joseph.

“Our semi-final game against Nelson was very close, 5 – 4 which they won. The finals were Nelson and MAG and that was won

by MAG 4 – 2.”

Tailaqh Love and Nixon Kim made the secondary schools tournament team.

“Softball is looking very good at MBC as we have some very good and talented junior boys coming through the ranks,” said Joseph.

A dark day for sport Sport pales into insignificance when someone ends up in hospital fighting for his life.

As everyone will know cricketer Jesse Ryder, all set to fly off to India to take up a $300,000 contract the next day, was assaulted on Wednesday night outside a Merivale bar in Christchurch by four men, all aged in their 20s.

Four low lifes laying into a man on the ground, kicking and punching Ryder, as reports have stated, speaks for itself.

Ryder has been no choir boy in the past but from what we’ve been told the attack was unprovoked and Ryder’s Wellington teammates were not around when it happened.

The pity is the attack on Ryder came at the end of a good week

for New Zealand cricket.

The Kiwis came oh so close to their first series win against the poms for more than 10 years and it took a Dunkirk effort (check out your history book) for the poms to escape that possibility happening.

The pom media crowed about how well their players had done to salvage the draw which I suppose is understandable since they became only the third side in history to bat out the final day having entered it four wickets down.

But most of the kudos had to be New Zealand’s.

For the No 8 team in the world to come close to upstaging team No 2 is something that doesn’t happen every day of the week.

and Hamish Rutherford, has been hugely encouraging too given that this area of our game has been brittle for so long.

Time moves quickly but it doesn’t seem long ago that we had the Ross Taylor debacle and the humiliating loss to South Africa.

Taylor’s unavailability for the South African tour actually opened the door for Fulton who at 34 had been out of international cricket for several years and must have been wondering if his days of tipping a black cap atop his bald dome might be over.

Yet it has not all been plain sailing for Fulton since his recall.

He suffered a knee injury in South Africa.

Then it changed dramatically for him this past week in Auckland.

He batted his first ever test century, 136, on the Friday of the test followed by 110 on the Monday - clear proof of the ability he had shown 10 years ago when he knocked up 310 runs not out against Auckland at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.

This week Fulton has shown that a player with the odds against him, can come back.

Let’s hope Jesse Ryder is spared and can do the same.

Demolition Derby returns at speedway

By Darrell Bate The twisting and banging of cars colliding and popping of tyres will keep speedway fans amused this weekend as Eastern States Speedway welcome the return of the Demolition Derby at the 'Easter Eggstravaganza' meeting.

Due to scrap prices, the ease of obtaining cars for use in derby racing has almost become impossible resulting in the cancellation of past derbies over previous seasons.

The interest for this Saturday night's derby has exceeded the 20 minimum entrant level set by the club’s committee and members are looking forward to the return of the crowd favourite.

Production saloons and stockcars will also battle it out on the night for the open championship honours in their respective classes with ministocks, streetstocks and saloons also appearing.

President Stuart Coutts is hopeful that the invitation extended to several superstocks from Nelson will be accepted as they also provide ultimate entertainment for the spectators.

“These guys are always asking when we are going to host them as they really love our track and enjoy coming over the hill in numbers to race.

Marlborough u16 marching team Shontae-Excelsior.

For the first time in 67 years, a Marlborough marching team has received a place in the top three of the New Zealand marching championships.

Shontae-Excelsior, Marlborough’s u16 team, took out first place in the plate march for their technical drill, and third place in the New Zealand champion display.

Coach Julia Allen said receiving the award was “one of the best moments ever.”

“It was the most nerve wrecking moment standing at the awards presentations.

was full, and when we heard our name called out we were just so thrilled, we all cried with pride,” she said.

Upon returning home, the team, who beat the second place plate march getters by 88 points, found out that a Marlborough marching team had not gotten a place at the New Zealand Championships since 1946.

Other Marlborough teams who attended the champs were Shontae-Allstars, u12, placing 6th tech and 5th display, and Cordeaux Renwick, placing 5th tech and 6th display in the plate division.
