Georgie arrives New Year

As many Marlburians celebrated New Year’s with friends and families, one Waikawa Bay family celebrated bringing new life into 2023 on January 1.

Georgie Josephine Smith de Lambert arrived weighing a healthy 6.4 pounds.

Mother Phoebe de Lambert says Georgie was expected to arrive December 31 but after an eight hour labour, made her presence felt with gusto to see in the New Year.

Christie-Lee was yet to receive an apology and or communication from Westpac.

Bonnie Miller, 39, a phone dispatcher, has been a customer with Westpac since she was 13-years-old.

She says she realised on Saturday morning that her account was overdrawn, only by $39 but still ‘annoying enough’.

“I do not hold funds in my debit account so any money is transferred over to it to use Pay Wave and online payments so I know they went out, and nothing bounced back.

However, Westpac have been in and changed dates on the payments, one of which I was charged twice for. They are saying it’s my fault as the payments bounced back and have been re-spent.”

“As someone who budgets to the letter, I know this is not the case. I only transfer what is needed to that account, at the time it is needed. I received an email on Saturday or Sunday morning about the glitch.”

A 35-year-old Blenheim woman who didn’t want to be named says she realised something wasn’t quite right with her account on Saturday, January 7.

I noticed my debit payments were taken twice,” she says.

Westpac Bank has authorised staff to refund customers up to $800 each after a technology glitch sent scores of people into overdraft, an email to employee’s shows.

The bank has apologised for leaving customers out of pocket after transactions made on the busiest shopping days before Christmas were not processed correctly and only put through a fortnight later.

A technology glitch is being blamed for MasterCard credit and debit payments made on December 22 and 23 not going through properly.

Blenheim’s Christie-Lee Robson, 31, is self-employed. She didn’t realise anything untoward with her account until her insurance company rang her saying that they didn’t receive their payment.

“After they called me and I checked my accounts I noticed I was $260 overdrawn,” she says.

“I’ve had to borrow money for food and petrol.

I contacted the bank, for them to say that they can’t reimburse me,” she says.

“Honestly it’s a nightmare being a Westpac customer and I will be changing banks.”

“I am disgusted that Westpac hadn’t released an email or anything to give its customers a heads up at any stage in the two weeks that it’s taken to figure this issue out and fix it.”

Westpac has since contacted customers in an email to apologise and advise people to go to a branch or ring its contact centre 0800 400 600 if they have been “financially challenged”.

Stolen kayaks upsetting

A Springlands mother has been left feeling dismayed after her kids’ kayaks were stolen from her property on Saturday night.

Gemma Long posted on Facebook on Monday to vent her frustration and to seek any information regarding the disappearance of two kayaks from her Kingwell Drive property. The kayaks were bought as a Christmas present and were only in the family’s possession for three weeks.

“We bought them second hand for $300.

They were located on the side of the house by carport, they are orca solo brands,” Gemma says.

Her five-year-old boy Luka had recently got a new life jacket. Gemma says he is very upset and doesn’t quite understand how it could be taken from him.

Gemma says she has been to the houses down Kingwell Drive and Jellyman Place and asked if anyone heard anything or seen anything as a lady had messaged her saying they went into that street and didn’t come out.

Springlands resident Julienne Hammond noticed two ‘random people’ trying to ‘stash a kayak’ on her front lawn after turning her sunroom light on.

Julienne’s post to Facebook says she went out to have a look and the individuals continued on and walked over the footbridge behind Kingwell Drive. Julienne added she ‘thought it was random (that) some guy carrying something that big, so late’.

Gemma says she feels disgusted and in shock.

QSM – to continue to fight injustice and value autism

Former Blenheim resident Matt Frost has been acknowledged with a QSM in the New Year’s Honours List for services to people with autism.

Matthew found out when he was contacted by the Honours Unit, a small team who organise the Honours List, in November.

“They ask you to keep it in confidence. The King then agrees to the Honour being proposed and you receive a letter from Her Excellency the Governor- General about the middle of December. In my case, I was allowed to tell my work that there might be media,” he says.

Matthew says the award means a tremendous amount and he is well aware that he has had opportunities other people with autism and other disabled people have not had.

“I am keen to use my honour in a humble but strategic way to keep on improving the rights of autistic and other disabled people. I was really touched by those people who contacted me to tell me that the award meant something to them too. But the reaction of my family and friends meant the most to me as they have supported me in good times and challenging times to

continue my work and enable me to live a good life.”

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental impairment which can mean that autistic people may have specific areas of focus and different ways of behaving to others. People with ASD may also have different ways of learning, moving, or paying attention.

The 42-year-old currently has lived in Wellington for 20 years and has been a Policy Analyst and advocate for the rights of disabled people for over 15 years. Matthew currently works for Whaikaha: the new Ministry of Disabled People.

The Ministry is the first in the world with a sole focus on issues relating to disabled people and was launched on July 1 2022.

“I had a senior role in setting up the Ministry. I have been working for three years as the Principal Advisor with a lived experience at the Ministry of Education’s National Office in Wellington.

My job there was to assist senior leadership to understand the lived perspectives of disabled and other disadvantaged learners.”

Matthew had early intervention when he was three and had a more formal diagnosis of Asperger Syndrome (a form of autism) when

then I might be successful.”

Matthew believes he has been fortunate in having supportive employers who stuck with him through periods where his own mental health was pushed.

“I think there is still some way to go to enable us to understand and fully appreciate the talents that autistic people can bring to society.”

So how does he think he has increased understanding of autism?

“Just being myself. I have a strong

interest in cricket and began using my skills when I was at primary school. One thing I’ve been really pleased to see is increased exposure in the media of the strengths of disabled and autistic people and what barriers people can face to flourishing in society.” Matt would like to thank those Marlburians – such as supporters of cricket and his teachers who supported him as this helps to increase understanding too.

Journey to the heart of fabulous

The bus for Blenheim Musical Theatre’s 2023 production of Priscilla Queen of the Dessert is set for ignition.

The May production is a joyous jukebox musical homage to the anthems of the 70’s and 80’s – celebrating the era of disco music - a genre of dance music and a subculture that emerged in the 1970s from the United States’ urban nightlife scene.

The local cast was announced before Christmas and consists of two drag queens and one transgender, while a feature of the cast is the inclusion of five divas.

Newcomer Andrew Simon has been cast as Tick/Mitzi while Daniel Brunel will take on the flamboyant Adam/Felicia. Dave Barrett will play the role of transgender Bernadette, a former performing icon.

For Blenheim’s Dave Barrett being cast as Bernadette gives him the opportunity to develop and deliver a character quite unlike anything he has played before.

“The character, research and development of playing a transgender will add to my skillset and confidence, along with the excitement of being able to portray one of the more colourful characters from an iconic piece of my past,” he says.

“My job is to make the audience believe they are truly watching a female transgender drag queen and not a male actor playing a woman.”

Meanwhile, Marlburians will

recognise the names of the divas cast which include Sara Bishell, Georgia Ryan, Krystal Palmer, Megan Rosene and Kim Weatherhead.

The story of Priscilla (a wonderful old lavender bus who shares the stage with the cast) started as a hugely successful movie made by film director/writer Stephan Elliot, in 1994, telling the story of two drag queens and a trans woman, who contract to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a town in the Australian desert. As they head west from Sydney the three friends come to the forefront of a comedy of errors, encountering several strange characters, as well as incidents of homophobia, while widening comfort zones and finding new horizons.

In its transition to the stage in 2008, Priscilla, saw a change of some musical influences, reshaping of the original story and greater focus on the celebration of diversity and it now recognized internationally as a colourful joyous toe tapping boogie treat with lavish costumes and dancing and good music – every song a hit from the disco era.

From the perspective of Blenheim Musical Theatre, it offered a total contrast to the passion and emotionalism that was last year’s production of ‘Les Misérables’.

Marlborough is blessed with an extraordinary pool of talented young dancers and working with Elly Molloy as choreographer, it is the perfect showcase for them. This is combined with the outstanding musical talent of Con O’Brien and

Time to have your say on the future of Marlborough’s freshwater Consultation is open until the end of February 2023 to have your say on the future of Marlborough’s freshwater.

This is the first of three submission periods over the next two years in response to new Government rules on freshwater. In August 2020, the Government released its Essential Freshwater package, which introduced new regulations designed to: • Stop further degradation of freshwater resources and improve water quality within five years • Reverse past damage and bring our freshwater resources, waterways and ecosystems to a healthy state within a generation This first round of submissions aims to find out how the community values freshwater in the region and what the aspirations are for this water now and into the future. To determine this, the proposal is to divide Marlborough’s freshwater areas into six Freshwater Management Units (FMUs). The FMUs are grouped because they are a single catchment or group of catchments with similar characteristics.

Council’s Environmental Science and Monitoring Manager Alan Johnson says Marlborough’s freshwater resources are in good shape but that doesn’t mean that we don’t have work to do.

“Our environmental monitoring shows that there is room for improvement in some catchments,” he says.

Each month, physical and chemical measurements are taken at 35 river sites across Marlborough to monitor

The six proposed Freshwater Management Units are Awatere, East Coast Complex, Marlborough Sounds Complex, Te Hoiere/Pelorus, Waiau-Toa/Clarence and Wairau surface water quality. Council also monitors the state of the region’s aquifers based on water levels in a network of 30 wells.

A fundamental concept across the Government’s Essential Freshwater package is Te Mana o te Wai, which means the first priority is to ensure the life-supporting capacity of freshwater for future generations.

This submission period kicks off a two-year engagement with tangata whenua, the public, industry groups and others to December 2024, with the aim of informing any variations

required to the Proposed Marlborough Environment Plan. Engagement will take place through online surveys, public events and meetings. Anyone can take part in the surveys and hard copies will be available from Council offices, libraries and at public events.

Koromiko Reserve in good health The Koromiko Forest Reserve near Picton has been given a clean bill of health.

Over the past 20 years the former deer park has been the subject of a restoration project, with thousands of locally sourced seedlings planted by school children.

The reserve is managed by Council and under a covenant with the QEII National Trust.

Jane Tito said the recent inspection was part of the National Trust’s routine covenant monitoring programme.

“The inspection by the local trust representative found the reserve is looking pretty good, with lots of native birds, including kererū, a lot of natural regeneration in the understorey and a fair amount of public use,” she said.

The inspection noted a number of wind damaged or dead branches on

black beech trees which host the rare yellow mistletoe plant.

“There were only 13 mistletoe plants found in the reserve, so any loss is significant,” Mrs Tito said. “It’s proposed that seed collection and artificial distribution will take place this year to see if new plants can be established.”

The report noted good natural regeneration has started with no further planting required.

Council’s biosecurity staff have been busy targeting new and emerging invasive exotic plant threats in Marlborough.

Some unwanted plants were destroyed while others were being monitored, Biosecurity Manager Jono Underwood told Council’s Environment Committee meeting.

Moth plant control took place in May and June after the biosecurity team was notified of two separate mature vines - one at a new site on Queen Charlotte Drive Road Reserve near the Kenepuru Road turn off, the other re-emerging at a Waikawa property with an active infestation.

All plants were destroyed and numerous seed pods removed. Moth plant (Araujia hortorum) is a South American native, introduced to New Zealand in the 1880s as an ornamental, but is now actively managed as an invasive species and banned from sale, propagation and distribution.

A rampant evergreen vine, it grows to 10metres with clusters of bell-shaped flowers that turn into distinctive choko like pods. When they split the seeds are easily windborne giving potential for it to become a major ecological weed inhibiting regeneration of native and wetland areas.

Nassella tussock compliance inspections began in May, said Mr Underwood.

Biosecurity staff continue to work with land occupiers, inspecting properties as part of the active inspection programme and are confident the small number of issues will be remedied, said Mr Underwood.

A new rough horsetail (Equisteum hyemale) site was discovered on Bells Road recently and approximately 200 kilograms of plant material removed.

Rough horsetail stems have a distinctive black collar at the joins. It forms an extensive network of underground rhizomes and spreads rapidly in damp habitats preventing the growth and regeneration of natives and hindering watercourses, leading to increased flooding risk.

The new site has been added to Council’s management programme meaning it will be closely managed with the aim of elimination.

The biosecurity team was notified of an infestation of Bomarea in Waitaria Bay. Bomarea is a multi-stemmed, scrambling perennial vine that twists around any available support and, left unchecked, will smother other plant life.

The infestation was found in an area on the fringe of public conservation land, possibly the result of dumped garden waste, said Mr Underwood.

A two-prong attack of digging out smaller plants and tubers, with herbicide targeting the larger plants, has taken place. Being the only known site, early intervention is taking place while Bomarea is assessed for a potential longer term management programme.

Rita: ‘part of the many to seek change’ Picton’s Rita Powick became a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the New Year’s Honours List for life-long services to Māori, education and governance.

Journalist Chris Valli learnt her recognition is testimony to her cultural identity and a kaupapa for a joint partnership of Te Reo Maori.

There is a whakatauki (proverb) which reads Ko te raukura te tohu o te whakaiti - to uphold the raukura, the ancestral symbol of humility.

The raukura is the white plume, a significant symbol for Te Āti Awa. The raukura symbolises pride, inner strength and peaceful co-existence as a Māori nation as a means of re-elevating the mana of Māori autonomy.

“It is the deeper meaning of this kōrero that drives me to be a better ancestor for both who and what I leave behind.”

Rita Powick is a descendant of Te Āti Awa and of Ngāi Tahu, the whakatauki gains valuable insight into a wahine with strong links to her tupuna/ancestors in what she describes as the very basis of who she is, how she behaves and how she interprets the world.

“My culture and my reo are of utmost importance to me, one can’t exist strongly without the other. My reo and culture enable who I am and want to be, confirming my history, affirming my present and informing my future,” she reflects.

The New Zealand Order of Merit is awarded to those “who in any field of endeavour have rendered meritorious service to the Crown and the nation or who have become distinguished by their eminence,

talents, contributions, or other merits”.

Rita found out about the honour back in October after receiving an official email to inform her she had been nominated.

“I was both taken aback and so humbled along with being challenged by the need to hold all this in confidence.”

Rita has been committed to enhancing te reo Māori, works as a resource teacher of Māori and has chaired the National Association of Resource Teachers Advisory Māori from 2002 to 2019.

Having been involved in marae operations since 1982, she is a trustee and chairperson of Waikawa Marae and has been a judge and organiser of Te Tauihu o Te Waka Manu Korero – te reo Māori oratory competitions – and leads the Taiopenga annual kapa haka event in Wairau.

Rita says there are numerous people who have weaved her Reo journey and pathway none more so than ‘special whānau members’, important role models, valued colleagues, and key challengers who have played significant roles in making her the person she is.

“Particularly my grandparents, my mum, my husband, tamariki, mokopuna and immediate whānau and my extended whānau across Waikawa are and have been the centre of my universe. I have been so fortunate to be within strong support and I have also deliberately sought out to be part of so many other people who I hugely admire

and respect - too many to name lest I overlook one.

I sincerely acknowledge those who nominated me for this auspicious honour along with ‘te tini me te mano’ (the multitudes) who have taken time to share so much with me over generations, without their unconditional support I would not be

who I am - this honour also signifies all of them.”

She believes the best thing about what she does is ultimately ‘being who I am’, what she believes in and always seeking to grow and share this with others - as many people as possible.

She says another whakataukī ‘He aha te mea nui o te ao? He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.’ is both simplistic yet sophisticated.

“On the surface it can be taken to mean people are the most important thing in the world, which might be seen as quite individualistic, self-centred, gives a sense of self-importance and place people in some supreme position above any and everything else.”

“However when you delve into the innate beauty of te reo Māori underlying this then the real meaning is much broader. People are important, not in isolation but within the process of taking responsibility for all that they are part of and all that is around them. It is the deeper meaning of this kōrero that drives me to be a better ancestor for both who and what I leave behind.”

So how do ‘we’ as a community or collective educate or inform those who are less understanding when it comes to the Te Ao worldview (the defining principle being whānaungatanga and kinship)?

Rita firmly believes the first point is to reinstate authority for te reo me ōna tikanga to Māori, in order to meaningfully address the horrific impact that English language compulsion had and still has on te reo Māori.

“The establishment of a structure

similar to that of the current health system reform - one that enhances rangatiratanga for Māori over te reo me ōna tikanga Māori, ensuring greater influence through the entire wider New Zealand system, is central to Te Tiriti o Waitangi, ensures everyone has the same access to strong language outcomes and one that includes strengthening mana motuhake for whānau control of their reo/tikanga wellbeing.”

“In addition - to drive both the national pride in being a bilingual/ bicultural nation and the normalisation of te reo and Māori culture in such ways as having these as intrinsic, evaluated and rewarded within all educational and vocational training programmes.”

So what would she be doing if she wasn’t immersed in her Te Ao worldview? Her dry sense of humour depicts a greater lens into her purpose or kaupapa.

“I tend to get seasick too far away from the shore, so sailing the world on a waka or any luxury liner isn’t me. I’m so grateful it was my tūpuna who travelled the great oceans. I much prefer the kaimoana to come to me, so exploring the underwater depths of Tangaroa as an oceanographer certainly wouldn’t cut it.”

“What I have always sought is to be part of the many who seek to change, for the better, the control for ngā iwi Māori. Talk about such terms as ‘partnership’ has been too much talk for far too long, with not enough deliberate action and with generations of our whānau having passed away pursuing this right.

In all I do, and wish to do this is a major lane in my pathway forward.”

Marlborough Youth Selected for National Youth Brass Band

Two Marlborough youths have been selected for the 2023 New Zealand National Youth Brass Band which will perform at the ASB Theatre next Friday.

Marlborough District Brass members Jonty Zydenbos on soprano cornet and Leon Kendall on tenor horn will join the band for the five-day training course, which includes section work with some of New Zealand’s finest musicians, followed by the concert tour to Westport, Blenheim, and Christchurch.

The Band is a nationwide representative band comprising New Zealand’s most talented young brass and percussion musicians under twenty-three years of age and are selected from nationwide auditions of band members from community-based brass bands through-out New Zealand.

There is no automatic selection for a place in the band with each player auditioning annually, and many past members have gone

Jonty has completed Bachelor of Music majoring in Jazz Performance on trumpet at Victoria University and will go on to study Honours after the concert tour. Jonty began playing cornet aged just five years and has already been selected for seven previous National Youth Bands and five National Secondary School Bands, as well as eight Salvation Army National Youth Bands.

Leon will move to Dunedin after the concert tour to begin studies in archaeology.

Leon began playing at eight years of age and has been selected for three previous National Secondary School Bands. He is looking forward to attending his first National Youth Band programme and performing with the country’s top youth players.

A further Marlborough connection to this year NYB is tutor Philip Johnston who hails from Blenheim learning and playing with the local band before joining the NZ Army Band which he now conducts. Philip has a string of national titles on Bass and Tenor Horn.

The concert of the NZ National Youth Brass Band will be in ASB Theatre at 7pm on Friday 20th January. Tickets are on sale now at www.asbtheatre.com .

After two years of cancellations due to Covid restrictions the Beavertown Lions Bride of the Year Show returned last Saturday evening and with it, ten beautiful brides.

In a spectacle of intricate lace, layered tulle and sparkling diamantes the brides walked the aisle in front of an enthusiastic audience and judging panel.

With six prizes on offer it wood-Peter who won first was Maisie Blackplace and the title of Bride of the Year for 2022.

It was a case of third time lucky Blackwood-Peter who marriedfor bride Maisie her husband Thomas Peter in February of restrictions cancelled their this year after Covid wedding plans twice.

Award for ‘true doer’ of deer industry

By Annette Scott – Farmers Weekly For the first time, the deer industry award goes to a stock and station agent.

A “true doer” for the deer industry, Ron Schroeder will clock up his golden anniversary this year in the industry he stumbled upon as a sheep and beef livestock agent in Marlborough.

In recognition of his service to the industry, Schroeds, as he is widely known among his deer industry colleagues, was awarded the New Zealand Deer Industry 2022 award, presented every year by the NZ Deer Farmers Association (NZDFA).

Who could be worthier than Schroeds, who has contributed at the grassroots of the industry for almost 50 years, asked prominent Canterbury deer farmers and award nominators Bob Kingscote and Colin Guild.

Their sentiment was echoed by supporting testimonials from industry stalwarts and leaders, who praised Schroeder’s connection with clients, based on his extensive industry knowledge and people skills.

Schroeder has been a matchmaker of buyers and sellers, procuring and transacting thousands of deer deals over his long career, his work taking him the length and breadth of the country as well as overseas.

He has been a staunch supporter of the NZDFA and Deer Industry NZ (DINZ) events with his ability to gauge the pulse of the industry over the years invaluable

to organisations as well as stock agent colleagues and countless individual deer farmers.

Messages of support for his nomination described Schroeder as a dedicated stalwart who has gone well beyond the call of duty in supporting and servicing the industry.

“Schroeder has been and remains after 49 years a critical and dedicated agent and is by any standards an outstanding, albeit a quiet and modest achiever for the deer industry.

“A true doer who is respected and admired and has a legion of business friends and personal association across the industry in an exceptional career,” Kingscote said.

Retired DINZ producer manager Tony Pearse praised Schroeder as a master of diplomacy and an accomplished, warm-hearted NZ deer ambassador and standout performer in one of the industry’s most important roles.

Based out of North Canterbury from his hometown of Cheviot, Schroeder is the first stock and station agent recipient of the award.

A self-confessed “old school operator”, the PGG Wrightson agent does not deny his love for deer.

He farms them, buys and sells them, hunts them, eats them and, some believe, dreams about them.

It all began in 1974, when he started with the NZ Farmers Co-Op as a sheep

and beef stock agent in Marlborough.

Through various contacts he developed an interest in deer and tried to convince some of his sheep and beef clients that deer would be a good option. “But to no avail,” Schroeder said. Then in 1978, out of the blue, a client saw the light.

“He just came to me and said ‘I’m going to go into deer, where do I start?’ – So I drove him from Marlborough to Southland to look at various set-ups.

“We came home, put up fences and a basic set of yards, brought some hinds and that was the start of my hands-on deer, but it didn’t really take off in Marlborough.”

Then that client got associated with a helicopter pilot and had a sale of feral animals.

“People came from all over New Zealand and from that I got a lot of contacts and I started chasing deer clients all over the country.”

Schroeder gets his greatest satisfaction these days looking after the next generation of deer farmers.

The biggest legacy to his career is the mentoring and encouragement of young deer farmers and agents.

Thanks in part to Ron Schroeder, velvet – a by-product in the pioneering days of the New Zealand deer industry – is now a lucrative mainstream industry for growers and breeders.

Fourth wettest on record

The weather around Christmas and New Year certainly played its part for outside festivities.

However, Blenheim’s weather is becoming wetter, warmer and less windy, according to weather researchers.

A meteorological summary from the Marlborough Research Centre showed Blenheim experienced its fourth-wettest year on record in 2022 despite six out of the 12 months recording lower than average rainfall.

Blenheim received 830.6mm of rain over the year, 130% of the long-term average of 639mm, meaning it has recorded higher than average rainfall in four out of the past five years.

The exception was 2020.

Five of the other six months experienced higher than average rainfall, including July which was Blenheim’s wettest month on record with 220.6mm of rain falling – a huge 342% increase on the winter month’s 64.5mm long-term average.

Due to the long spells of rain clouds and overcast skies, Blenheim fell well short in its quest to reclaim the Sunshine Capital of New Zealand award – the Sunshine Cup – which went to New Plymouth which recorded 2659.3 hours of sun, a whole 180 hours – or seven and a half days – more than Blenheim.

Blenheim still recorded its seventh-hottest year since records began in 1933 and, with a mean temperature of 13.81 degrees Celsius over the 12 months, 2022 was 0.57C warmer than the long-term average.

weather station at Grovetown Park shows that the town is becoming less windy year-on-year, recording below long-term average wind-runs for the last 15 years.

Last year was Blenheim’s least windy year since records began in 1996 with the daily average wind-run of just 203.7km compared to the long term average of 250.9km, while all 12 months of the year recorded below average wind-runs.

Daily wind run is an indication of the average wind speed over the previous 24 hours. For example, a daily wind run of 240 km, divided by 24 hours in a day, gives a mean wind speed of 10 km/h.

Bridge club homeless

To the lady in a small grey car who pulled up around 6.30pm & loaded her car up with items left for the charity shop bin at Horton Park on Friday 6th you should be ashamed of yourself.

After pouring all the proceeds from the sale of the old Maxwell Road Bridge Club home into the specially arranged Bridge Room at the Clubs of Marlborough... the Bridge Club is now without a homebase, and without equity to find somewhere else. Hideous. What now?

I see the juveniles have been tagging the old banana Bridge plus the railway Bridge.

Absolutely no respect. I wonder how they would feel if someone went to their place with a few spray cans and marked their territory?.

The silence over the demise of the Clubs of Marlborough is deafening. Once upon a time the old Working Mens club and the RSA both had extremely valuable and prime sites in town, now the once financial members have nothing. Have the former committee just rolled over and surrendered, as a member of both former clubs it would be nice to know what is happening and maybe any salvage of the situation.

Wrong My 85yr old aunty lives in a secure retirement village in Christchurch, had her car stolen and used in a ram raid. She loses her car, has to pay excess. No excuses enough is enough.

Kia ora, welcome to Cancer Society Marlborough Relay For Life 2023 We’re pleased to bring back our biennial event, Relay For Life, on 4th & 5th March 2023. This unique overnight event pulls together people from throughout our community to celebrate cancer survivors and carers, remember loved ones lost to cancer and fight back by raising awareness and funds to support the work of Cancer Society Marlborough.

This year, we’re set to host this event at Lansdowne Park, for 18-hours of continuous walking (as a team!) while enjoying hospitality, entertainment, activities, and community camaraderie.

We welcome cancer survivors and their carers to lead the opening lap at 2pm and the candlelight ceremony will take place at 10pm, where decorated candle bags are illuminated and we walk in darkness.

Standard registrations for $20 are open until 14th February, with late registration open until 1st March. Everyone and anyone can get involved, so gather your friends, whānau and workmates and join us for Relay For Life 2023 – visit https://relayforlife.org.nz/marlborough/ for more information.
