Cora McConnell is fighting for her life and family.

A born and bred local, eight years ago, the then 36 year old was diagnosed with Stage 3C Ovarian Cancer (low grade) which had spread extensively through the abdomen and pelvis.

Eight years on Cora has fought the hardest years of her young life.

Forced to take medical retirement from her job, she also lost her Mum to cancer while her husband had a benign tumour removed.

I have a lot to live for The reality for Cora is that she needs help. Help to get to Cologne, Germany for treatment after exhausting her options here in New Zealand. Yet it comes at a price tag of around $150,000.

The personalised ‘ground-breaking alternative therapy treatment’ known as IOZK Immunotherapy mobilizes the body’s own immune response which enables it to fight against the tumour growth. In effect, her own immune system will be the guinea pig to a favourable outcome.

“They take my blood then take it to the laboratory where they do a comprehensive analysis of my immune system. On the basis of those results they produce a personalised vaccine that then activates my immune system to fight the tumours. They also have hyperthermia chambers where they heat the body up to 39 degrees to eat the cancer away.”

Along with many other therapies, Cora says there will be three rounds of treatment each cycle being six days with three weeks recuperation.

In 2014, she said she had an odd feeling in her tummy when her daughter was around 11 months old.

Cora rode it out, not thinking about the worst case scenario. However, for three weeks it hung around and she decided to get it checked by her doctor.

“She asked me to hop up on the bed and had a feel of my abdomen.

Unbeknown to me she felt tumours but didn’t say anything. She suggested an ultrasound just to ‘make sure’. I got the call from the nurse to come in and talk to the GP about the scan and she asked if I could bring a support person.”

Ovarian cancer symptoms BEACH include bloating, eating less and feeling fuller, abdominal/back pain,

changes in bowel and bladder habits and heightened fatigue.

Known as the ‘silent killer’ Cora says ovarian cancer is usually diagnosed in the later stages as the above symptoms are commonly associated with the menstrual cycle.

The cancer spread to the abdomen losing ‘a lot’ of organs she says she can live without namely her spleen, part of her liver omentum, peritoneum, diaphragm and parts of the bowel including a full hysterectomy and ‘thrown’ into surgical menopause instantly.

“I was hurt and grieving that I couldn’t complete the family and I had failed my husband and daughter.

I ran for the hills and did it all myself mentally.”

She says she had done a great deal of work on herself through meditation and reading about her scenario for greater understanding and was in

a ‘good place’. However, her Mum Anne got diagnosed with cancer in August 2021 and when she died in January she admits she crumbled.

Her self-awareness and inner monologue reflects her journey where optimism and positivity is the priority.

Cora flies out to Germany this Friday and at this stage will spend three months away from her husband and daughter. Yet, she has an angel to support her on her continued journey thanks to her late Mum’s best friend.

“She offered and said she was in this for the long haul with me. I was overwhelmed and took the offer. I don’t want a prognosis. We have only got the here and now, the present moment. I have a lot to live for.”

"I have had a great response to the event, and have already heard about people who have been positively affected through it. So much positivity, and amazing to see so many people getting behind a great cause." Bary says suicide prevention isn't just one day a year, it's 365 days a year and encourages those to 'reach out' if they are hurting. "Check up on family and friends, even if you think they are doing ok. A lot of hurt can be hidden behind a smile. "

Lions leave lasting impression

Two of Marlborough’s longstanding service groups have left a lasting impression.

Beavertown Lions and the Blenheim Lions Club donated $10,000 to School Start First Impressions Marlborough at the Clubs of Marlborough last week.

SSFIM works to reduce the impact of poverty on the education of Marlborough children by supplying everything a child might need to start school.

The initiative is designed to give Marlborough’s at-risk new entrants the opportunity to commence school on an equal footing with their peers, enabling them to embrace the challenge of school, focus on learning and give them the chance to be the best that they can be.

Chairperson Michelle Munro says they were extremely humbled by such a generous donation, particularly from such a long standing charitable organisation as the Lions.

“It reinforces that we are on the right track and that our work is genuinely valuable in the community.”

The registered charity works to reduce the impact of poverty on the education of Marlborough children. They believe that a child’s 5th birthday and entry to school presents an impossible challenge to Marlborough families in financial difficulties.

Teacher recruitment schemes The government is spending $24 million on recruitment initiatives aiming to bring an extra 1000 teachers into the workforce, and a further $20m on support for students.

Announcing the move in a statement last week, Minister of Education Chris Hipkins said he expected the $24m funding would bring in 700 teachers from overseas, and see another 300 trained up domestically.

“This donation means we can afford 37 plus more boxes (containing items such as stationery and clothing) which free us up to spread our reach further and be able to say yes to each eligible inquiry. In fact we are now confident we can look into reaching out to the Kaikoura region.

It will also build our profile opening up more opportunities of support from other sponsors, local businesses and volunteers going forward.”

Michelle says there has always been a little part of her that knew she could do more. When she saw the School Start First Impressions Charity in Auckland on TV, it felt like there was an opportunity here in Marlborough.

“I’m just one person, a solo Mum of two who also runs her own business. My Mum and aunty were all in and away we went.

Slowly but surely people around Marlborough have jumped on board too with sponsorship and helping with donations.

“As wonderful as Marlborough is we are not immune to poverty

and other hardships and that needs to be addressed and supported. I have always loved kids and have been told all my life that I’m surely destined to contribute to them in some way and this is it.”

Michelle says as of the end of this month, they will have given 150 children starting school a sense of value and confidence that they can learn and grow up to do anything.”

“We feel safer in the knowledge that no child will miss out and we can continue doing more good for children starting school that are in real need.”

Work on Renwick’s new water treatment plant in Terrace Road has started.

Simcox Construction was awarded the contract for civil and structural works and has made a start on groundwork, with completion scheduled for 2023.

The plant is being built near the town’s new reservoir.

Construction of the water treatment plant is another significant step in the long-term project to improve the water supply in Renwick, Projects Engineer Mark Power said.

“The water treatment plant is being built on recently purchased land near the reservoir on the lower terrace which provides a larger area for construction,” he said. “It will be built on a platform 1.2m above the ground designed to prevent any future flood issues.”

Calling one more marcher

Calling all perspective marchers.

The Sorelle Renwick marching team - affiliated to Marching Marlborough - are on the lookout for one more marcher to join their ranks.

Anita Ireland coaches the team, along with Kate McDougall. Anita says they need one more marcher to be competitive and says they will take more if they can get them.

Marchers need to be 10 years of age to Year 12 at high school to meet the age requirements. She says no previous experience is needed and they are open to anyone.

Anita says marching as a sport has evolved over the years and continues to do so. She says squads can now be single or mixed gender and the uniform requirements have been amended to allow for skirts/shorts or a mix within the same squad “We need seven marchers to be competitive; we have six very keen marchers, looking for their ‘plus one’.”

The competitive marching calendar includes competitions locally, in Nelson and Canterbury as well as the South Island (scheduled Dec 3 and 4) in Nelson and the New Zealand Championships which are planned for March 17 - 19, 2023 and are being held in Canterbury.

Anita says marching offers its members many opportunities such as working as a team, and travelling away to competitions which she says builds great relationships with teams becoming like whanau.

ONE MORE HAND: The Sorelle Renwick marching team is calling for one more prospective member. Performing a move in their new display routine is Hanae Ireland, Amelia Craw, Emma Nicholl, Tasmyn Thame and Issy Millan.

“Marching offers participants a strong sense of team spirit and self-discipline. It heightens powers of concentration and physical fitness, encourages good deportment, pride in grooming and personal achievement and offers musical enjoyment, lifelong friendships and opportunities to travel.”

Meanwhile, Marching Marlbor-

ough was saddened to lose one of their leading local identities late last month, Marie Pope, affectionately known as ‘Mrs P’.

Marie chaperoned and coached for the Redwood Club in her earlier years and was a pioneer in lifting the profile of marching in the region.

“She even started a team of boys out of Linkwater, laughing at one

meeting about how they wanted a ‘hip hop’ based display which she knew nothing of, but somehow managed to get the team through a routine.”

“She used to travel with my team when my younger children were babies as a carer for them, so that I could train the team and be with them when they were competing,”

says Anita.

Two of last season’s team members donned their uniforms and performed a guard of honour at Marie Pope’s Memorial Service.

Bridging the linguistic and cultural gap

Ni Hao Ma? If you are reading this and you know what that means, your Chinese language is up to speed. Pronounced ‘Nee How Ma’ the social inquisition translates to ‘how are you?’

This weekend launches (September 25 October 1) New Zealand Chinese Language Week, a Kiwi-driven initiative launched in 2014 by Jo Coughlan, former press secretary to Don McKinnon, former Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.

NZCLW is designed to increase Chinese language learning and seeks to ‘bridge the cultural and linguistic knowledge gap’ between China and New Zealand by delivering fun and practical activities that assist locals to learn Chinese.

This weekend will be no exception at the Clubs of Marlborough ( 马尔堡俱乐部 ma er bao ju le bu) with traditional dances and performances in Chinese culture including workshops in calligraphy, tea art and cultural displays.

Acting President of the Chinese Association Marlborough Branch Mandy Li says this is the eighth year for Chinese Language week but this is the first time Marlborough’s Chinese community is doing an event with the wider Blenheim community.

Mandy says there are around 300 Chinese families living in Blenheim and says the main reasons to come to the region are for work or simply just ‘falling in love with this beautiful place.’

At one point the Wallabies were behind 31-13, to 13 players and showed a ton of character to come back into the game scoring 21 points in 12 minutes to get their noses in front.

It seemed the Aussies were keen to hurt / disable as many players as possible.

As for the closing stages there’s a contentious nature when the Australia player Bernard Foley was clearly delaying the kick; the French referee gave him a warning the player didn’t heed.

Earlier he was warned about doing

something with the ball.

The referee or any match official is paramount and always players need to listen to the referee.

The administration demanded fairness yet how was that fair?

For those old enough think the 1981 underarm incident.

Being a former umpire I’m waiting patiently to hear back from match referee David Boon on his take.

Dear Ed, The passing of an absolute paragon of Royalty, our late Queen, will no doubt see renewed interest in our becoming a republic.

I find it interesting to look at what happened to two States which opted out of British royal governance and became republics in the 1960’s.

At independence, these countries had similar socio-economic figures, political systems and crime rates.

By 2017, one country had, for example, a homicide rate of 2 per million people.

The other, a sky-high rate of 570 per

million.

One country had developed for itself a model of corruption control and, crucially, invested in health, education and public housing.

The other hadn’t, with consequent collapse of society.

Having a head of State who is the representative of a “foreign power” as opposed to a local bigwig isn’t seen as the foundation of a whole society, but evidently it isn’t a trivial thing either.

Food for thought maybe.

Consultation underway on London Quay Plans for the proposed development of Picton’s London Quay are on display now and Council wants your feedback.

Landscape architect impressions of how the Quay area will look are at Picton Library and Service Centre and Endeavour Park Pavilion and the last day for consultation is Friday 23 September 2022.

Parks and Open Spaces Manager Jane Tito said Council wanted to find a solution to the pedestrian and traffic flow in and around cafés and business along London Quay, Picton Foreshore and town wharf areas.

“Council engaged a landscape architect who has consulted with businesses along London Quay as well as cafés and galleries, apartment owners and community and business groups, and come up with the design which we are now consulting on with the general public,” she said.

Feedback from a survey conducted

in 2021 on the shared space in the lower London Quay area with commercial operators has also been taken into consideration in the proposed design.

The proposed plans have a strong pedestrian focus using garden plots and removable bollards, raised aggregate concrete surfacing with bold road markings and greening to define shared spaces.

The area is designed to improve visual and physical connections to the waterfront to create a more accessible and inviting green space area and allow continuity between Picton’s town wharf and High Street.

Once consultation is complete a detailed plan will be put together with a proposed build start date of mid-next year.

Marlborough’s recovery mahi about people helping people The mantra ‘help thy neighbour’ is strong within Marlborough’s rural communities following the August weather event.

Recently the Rural Support Trust hosted a successful and well-attended ‘farmers and growers’ drop-in session’ in Rai Valley for those impacted.

Council Recovery Navigator Charlotte Wood says the room was full of “people helping people” and “neighbours helping neighbours”.

“The loss of productive land for those present is particularly difficult to come to terms with. Many farms have been left grappling with deposits of silt, gravel, and logs as well as damage to waterways and fences,” she said.

Rural Support Trust gathered several farm consultants and support agencies together including members of Council’s recovery and rivers teams, LIC Farmwise Consultant, Ravensdown, Fonterra, Farmsource staff, DairyNZ, Vets on Alabama and FMG at Rai Valley’s Miller’s Rest Tavern.

Attendees were able to chat to those present about the impact of the weather event in a relaxed setting.

Rural Support Trust’s Sarah White says it is great to see farmers coming together to talk.

“Taking time off farm is really important as many farmers and workers will already be feeling tired in what is normally a really busy time and now with the added pressure of flooding,” she said.

Rural Support Trust will hold another dropin ‘barge meeting’ for those affected in the primary sector this Friday 23 September at Fish Bay in Kenepuru Sound. More drop-ins will be arranged in the coming weeks.

As a result, Operation: Isolation Assist was created.

This is a list of volunteer accommodation ‘hosts’ in Havelock, Blenheim, and Renwick for Sounds community locals who are impacted by road closures from the recent weather event. It is aimed at those who need to go to town for overnight stays of one or more nights due to appointments, supplies, doctors, dentists, hairdressers, or vet visits.

“It also includes discounted motels and some transport options for those who do not have a vehicle in town or cannot afford the barge cost,” said Mrs Orchard.

one on one with the Sun

Fiona pushes me to improve, and enjoy where I am Blenheim’s Lisa Wheeler has a new-found lease on life. She caught up with Chris Valli to talk about Multiple Sclerosis and the power and imagination of an invisible friend called Fiona.

Last week was Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week (September 12 – 18). The promotion behind the campaign was on Multiple Sclerosis having many different faces with over 4,000 people in New Zealand living with the chronic disease.

Blenheim’s Lisa Wheeler is one of those faces.

The awareness week informed one of the most difficult parts of Multiple Sclerosis is living with the unseen symptoms. What you don’t see being the daily struggles, the overwhelming fatigue making daily tasks impossible, the chronic pain, the blurred vision, the spasticity or inability to lift your own hand. In effect, everyone’s story and experience of Multiple Sclerosis is different.

This is Lisa’s story.

Lisa Wheeler has an invisible and sometimes visible friend who does things to make her cry. She calls her Fiona.

“I use my body movements to drive it.”

The story of Fiona, the princess in the movie Shrek, has a deep dark secret in that she turns into an ogre at night under the cover of darkness.

She suggests she doesn’t turn into an Ogre at night under the cover of darkness, adding of course her husband Andrew will attest to the fact that she’s an ogre at other times.

“Like Fiona, I have often had that feeling over the past 20 years, that there’s a secret I’m hiding that might repel people, as it has in the past. In 2002, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis ending an eight year relationship, losing my home,

compromising friendships, and ultimately leading me to being unable to work in my trained field.

“Fiona has really solidified in my mind as a ‘real invisible friend’ over the years as my physical disease slowly progresses. Not because my symptoms only show at night but because, in a way, I see the disease within my body as separate from whom I am. Fiona always seems to be with me. She’s always trying to trip me up and shove me over, make me cry, break me. Yes, she’s trying to break me.”

Lisa says she saw a TV programme once about the coldest inhabited place on earth.

“They hung some washing out and within mere seconds, it froze. That’s what my muscles feel like, as if a once wet towel has been frozen and now it doesn’t bend and move with ease.”

She reflects on a few years ago she was in a shop when she was asked injury or disability?’

She says she wasn’t so sure how to answer this as she didn’t think of Fiona as a disability per say.

“Her presence has brought so many new and dynamic aspects to my life that in a funny sort of way, I’m thankful for the changes I’ve been forced to make. Yes, I live with MS. Yes, if you said you could take it away today, I’d jump at the chance to move forward without Fiona but yet, I wouldn’t change the path I’ve taken to get here today. Fiona has brought me love, satisfaction and the meaning of true internal peace and that I wouldn’t change. From retraining as a Clinical Hypnotherapist, to marrying my husband and lifelong loyal supporter to my wonderful daughter, MS has brought rewards which are invaluable to me now.”

Born in Canada, Lisa has lived in New Zealand since 1997. She came to Blenheim in 2015 with husband

Andrew and daughter Sienna.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is an autoimmune disease where the person’s immune system attacks and eats away at the protective covering of one’s nerves. It happens in the brain and spinal column and may include vision loss, fatigue and impaired coordination.

Lisa, 54, says when the disease made her unable to stand for more than a few minutes, along with her husband’s support they searched for a new solution.

Those affected by it slowly lose their independence as the disease progresses. Try telling Lisa that.

Since 2017 she had been riding a similar segway style upright scooter but began having trouble boarding it as her legs wouldn’t step up. They found Omeo Technology in Otaki and went over for a trial in March, 2021.

“The moment I boarded it and got going, my husband (Andrew) and I knew this was going to bring joy back into my life. It was fun to ride, it felt natural, and I loved the colours.”

The Omeo she says is built on a Segway base and has seat steer technology, the only company in the world to do this.

“I use my body movements to drive it. Lean forward to go forward, back to go back, lean left to go left, right to go right. Not only is it fun and active, dynamic to ride but socially it has been a conversation avenue when I’m out anywhere.”

On September 26, Lisa will have had her Omeo for a whole year. She’s making the most of her increased mobility and ‘ride time’ which has seen her cover over 2000 kilometres over the 12 month period.

She says it has an inbuilt gyroscope so she doesn’t have to balance it.

“Now that I’ve personalised it with the face graphics on the back and the decorative flower patterned book covering on the hatch and front legs, people tell me it’s an expression of me. I guess it represents my desire to

be creative, to have fun, and to bring joy to other people.”

Lisa says her motivation in everyday life comes from waking up in the morning and realising every day is a chance to spend another day with her family, pets, friends and her work.

“Dream big and enjoy each day as there are no guarantees tomorrow will come.”

Caravan Club Golden Anniversary

The Marlborough Caravan Club will celebrate its Golden Anniversary this week.

The founder of the club and driving force for many years was Ernest Dowling, whom like many of the original foundation members is sadly now deceased.

Today the Marlborough Caravan Club has approximately 50 members with most well retired. Over the last few years as members have aged there has also been a gradual shift away from caravans to motorhomes, mainly because they are easy to drive, easy to setup, and take a lot less room to store. Today there is almost an equal amount of motorhomes and caravans within the MCC. Caravanning has changed quite significantly over the years when many families built their own units. These days, caravanning is dominated by a range of commercial caravans sourced from all over the world.

Another significant change in caravans is their build; today they have all the comforts of home such as onboard toilets, showers, water and waste systems along with central heating, TVs, and great cooking facilities.

caravans today many people have opted to live permanently in their vans, normally within commercial parks where there is security and access to all the required facilities.

These people often travel around NZ undertaking seasonal work to supplement their income. Today the internet allows people to operate successful businesses while on the road, and of course enjoy all web based entertainment.

In the late 1900’s there was a large number of caravan manufacturers in New Zealand. Today there is only a very small handful left and most of these firms undertake repairs and insurance work.

However there is a large group of people owning and restoring older caravans. There are many hops and similar gatherings for older retro vans in the summer months and often these people tow their “Classic

Caravan” with an immaculately prepared older automobile. Geraldine is one location holding an annual rally for classic and retro vans.

Throughout the year MCC holds a monthly rally, and generally an annual safari, which is a slow circumnavigation of the south island taking up to a month to complete.

The route varies from year to year.

Almost all of the MCC members

are members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association of the NZ (NZMCA) with both groups sharing the same views on protecting the environment while getting out and exploring all that the country has to offer.

Great Global Greyhound Walk The Great Global Greyhound walk is this Sunday at the old Tua Marina Church, Brayshaw Park @ 10:30am, 10:45am start.

A Blenheim first is happening this Sunday for lovers of Greyhound dogs.

Named the ‘Great Global Greyhound Walk’ the event is an opportunity for hounds and their owners to share their respective knowledge while encouraging ownership of a breed which has seen resurgence in popularity as a family pet.

Owner of ‘sighthound’ Lilly, Sandra McNeilly says there are several rehoming outfits within the country. The Blenheim one is Hounds 4 Life which was created in 2018 as part of Te Paranui Animal Sanctuary and Permaculture Homestead in Koromiko.

“That’s how we came across Lily. It was fate really as she got stuck there because of Covid.

She was actually on her way to Christchurch. We went out to have a look. I thought she was gorgeous.

“She was a bit aloof really, she wanted nothing much to do with us.”

However, they gave her a chance, bought her home and after two and a half years is part of the furniture.

Literally. As they say, the dog is now man’s (and Sandra’s) best friend.

“She’s had a great racing life and now she is having a great pet life.

The dog we had previously we had for 16 years. We always said we’d never get another dog. It’s just that this one was more convincing

this time.”

The Greyhound is a gentle and intelligent breed whose combination of long, powerful legs, deep chest, flexible spine, and slim build allows it to reach average race speeds exceeding 64 kilometres per hour.

Known as ‘Smash Lilly’, the seven year old Greyhound raced for a couple of years and earned her owners approximately 16 thousand dollars. Sandra says she is now sold on her and is taken by her quirkiness and her ‘sweet, funny, playful nature.’

“She’s got quite a good wardrobe. On Christmas Day she gets dressed up, they don’t seem to mind it. With their racing stripes on, they are used to being dressed up. They are couch potatoes. They love a good snooze, feed and a comfortable stop and walk.”

Sandra has met at least eight owners of Greyhound in Blenheim but believes there are many more through her conversations on social media groups such as Marlborough Hounds.

“They do love to run of course when they can and we have found some great places along the Taylor River where we can let her off the leash and go for it, especially if she has seen a rabbit, buried in a flax bush and convinced she will get it.”

Sandra says for those keen on the walk meet at the old Tua Marina Church, Brayshaw Park @ 10:30am for a 10:45am start along the riverside.

Marlborough Ulysses committee member Craig Noble says a lot of riders put their bikes away in the winter months and then bring them out again when the weather warms up again.

“This is when bikes should be thoroughly checked over and tyre pressures checked before going for a ride. Not only should the bikes be checked over but also the rider’s safety gear, helmet, gloves, jacket, pants and boots to make sure they are still fit for purpose.

“So this is where a Ride Forever Course comes in very handy to bring the riding skills up to scratch with Bronze, Silver and Gold courses. A lot of riders already do these courses annually to keep their riding skills up and to make their riding more enjoyable and safer.”

More than 200 bikes and riders attended the last event and Craig says they are planning on 300 this year.

Riders can expect to learn about no cost bike maintenance and tyre pressure checks along with a ‘show and shine’ display with prizes for American, Asian, European and other brands.

The mental health benefit of the arts

Mental Health - two words that are part and parcel or the norm in recent times with all things pandemic, the cost of living crisis and the fact the Highlanders haven’t won a super rugby competition in seven years - first world problems indeed.

Next week is Mental Health Awareness (September 26 - October 2) with the 2022 theme being Reconnect - with the people and places that lift you up.’

I witnessed my nine-year old daughter recently in what was her first time and performance on stage in the StageLab production of Sour Creme The Musical. She made me (and I assume others) ‘reconnect’ and then some. Collaboration, critical thinking and being part of something bigger - theatre and the arts. What a wonderful definition and insight into community. I was lifted indeed.

Australian Tim Minchin, composer and lyricist of the Olivier Award winning show Matilda the Musical (currently staged by Showbiz Christchurch) once said children’s creativity stems ultimately from play through effective modelling.

Indeed, the vision of the New Zealand curriculum is to develop confident, connected, actively involved, lifelong learners. Almost all of the values and key competencies can be developed through play based learning.

So what is learning through play?

It’s a term used in education and psychology to describe how a child can learn to make sense of the world around them. Through

play, children - who am I kidding - adults too - develop social and cognitive skills, mature emotionally and gain self-confidence required to engage in new experiences and environments.

Yet, how does one define engagement? It is a group of college students on their respective cell phones, at the Wither Road bus stop? I’d suggest its people directing (excuse the pun) their attention and energy ‘in the moment’ towards a particular task or activity.

Energy.

After a wet few months and the onslaught of winter, we are buggered - aren’t we? Yet, there is hope. In spring, daylight savings, warmer climes and the potential to fill our respective Te whare tapa wha - the four dimensions of well-being developed by one Sir Mason Durie in 1984 (physical, spiritual, mental and family).

Marlborough is blessed and continues to be when it comes to the Arts.

The calendar the next 12 months has a proverbial fruit salad of shows including ‘A Christmas Carol’ (Havelock and Boathouse Theatre) ‘Blue Eyes’ - a cabaret with a story and music of Frank Sinatra (Blenheim Musical Theatre) and Marlborough Children’s Youth Theatre’s (MCY) adaptation of ‘Alice in Wonderland’ at Marlborough Girls’ College.

So as Mental Health Awareness Week evolves next week, take the time to reconnect with the people and places that lift you up.

Just as theatre has done for this writer’s mental health.

The Creative Kids Trust is a Marlborough-based not-for-profit organisation that provides creative arts programmes for children, youth and the wider whanau to facilitate growth and establish a healthy sense of self.

Through participation and engaging creatively in art, theatre, music or movement, individuals are able to express themselves

and explore feelings that are often difficult to articulate in words.

What is counselling?

Counselling is a talking therapy where you or you and your partner or whanau form a trusting, non-judgemental professional relationship with the counsellor and confidentially talk through things that are troubling you, the reasons why your life is not working as you want.

Difficulties in your life might come from too much anxiety and stress, depression, relationship and friendship problems, someone dying, something that happened in the past you cannot forget, too much use of alcohol and drugs, work place problems, a change in your life – the list is long.

A counsellor will not tell you how to resolve

these difficulties – they don’t give advice – but they will help and support you to see things more clearly and maybe from a different point of view where positive change can happen.

Counselling can encourage you to become aware of different feelings, learn new communication skills, better coping skills, strengthen your ideas of self-worth, make more useful decisions, change a behaviour that can get you into ‘trouble’.

Counsellors registered with the professional association, Te Rōpū Kaiwhiriwhiri o Aotearoa, New Zealand Association of Counsellors are trained with either a Bachelor or Master degree of counselling. They work within a

Code of Ethics which has a robust complaints process. All counsellors are required to have regular supervision, hold an Annual Practicing Certificate and complete an audited Continuing Professional Development process each year.

In July, the Minister of Health, the Hon Andrew Little announced that Te Rōpū Kaiwhiriwhiri o Aotearoa NZAC Counsellors will be accredited by Te Whatu Ora to be employed or contracted in organisations such as: Primary and Community Health, Medical Centres, Alcohol and other Drug services, Mental Health and Addiction services, Youth Mental Health Services, Kaupapa Māori services and Primary Health Organisations.

Supporting others We can all play our part in helping keep ourselves and others safe by encouraging understanding within ourselves and our communities, sharing our experiences to impart a message of hope, and through reaching out to a person who may be struggling.

Imparting hope and reaching out to those around us are things we can all do naturally, with compassion and kindness.

And there are so many people and organisations out there in Nelson and Marlborough doing amazing work with vulnerable people and their whanau to keep them safe and well.

Here are a few of the simple messages we can learn and impart to others to keep our loved ones safe.

• Sometimes, people who are experiencing difficult times in their lives because of relationship breakups, loss of a job or a home, death of a person or pet, or prejudice or stigma from others about who they are, can result in their feeling vulnerable, sad or anxious.

• Feeling isolated or a burden on others, especially after having long term difficulties, can mean some people feel like giving up or that suicide might be an option.

• Check in with that person regularly, to see how they are going. Just acknowledging them can be a powerful tool that helps them feel that someone cares, that they are somewhere safe and that they are connected.

• If your gut feeling, your intuition, tells you that something is not quite right (e.g. they seem withdrawn, look hopeless/helpless, talk about death, or are acting out of character), trust your instincts and check it out.

Mental Health Awareness Week 26 September - 2 October 2022

The Art of Wellbeing The statistics on mental illness, addictions and suicide are daunting and overwhelming.

Four years ago, CARE Marlborough decided to take a different approach in celebrating “mental wellbeing” by educating the public, that people who have a mental illness can also be well and that everyone needs to actively look after their mental wellness.

The Art of Wellbeing Exhibition was born from our mission of “enabling empowerment

and self determination” that being creative not only relieves tension and stress but is life enhancing and celebrates each person’s uniqueness.

“The last couple of years have been extraordinary years of unprecedented change,” CARE Marlborough manager Carla Brownie says. “Our Art Exhibition is a celebration that even in difficult times, we all have the capacity to inspire and amaze.”

CARE Marlborough has been hosting art workshops in the lead up to the Art of Wellbeing Exhibition.

2022 Local elections meet your Candidates Sally arbuckle It is important that rural communities and townships are supported in achieving their aspirations and represented around the Council table.

The disruption caused by major weather events mean it is vital we reinstate roads and infrastructure to pre-flood conditions.

We must retain control and decision making over Marlborough three waters infrastructure.

Haysley MacDonalD I put my nomination forward so I can carry on the great work of our retiring Councillors. I am approachable and a good listener.

I will attend community meetings as your Council Representative and carry on the work of the small township programme.

I would appreciate your support to be your voice on council.

Haysley MacDonald is Blenheim born and bred and loves the province. He also wants the region to flourish and succeed.

“It has a lot going for it in various industries and I am keen to make a difference.”

Haysley says the role of local government would obviously be new to the founder and owner of te Pā Wines.

“It’s really about getting in there and

learning. I’m keen to get stuck in.”

One priority and insight for the province is the lack of atmosphere in the CBD. Haysley believes such an area needs to be revitalised, to bring in a freshness and sense of activity.

“There’s some industrial areas that need change and to have a sense of feeling. The town needs to utilise the river more effectively.”

Re Missing cats Maybe if people kept the cats on their own property they wouldn’t go missing. It’s extremely annoying when you don’t have a cat but there is always cat poop in the garden and your front door reeks of cat pee. Just like dogs, cats should have to be registered and microchipped. I would say cats are more of a nuisance to wildlife than dogs are p.s. I like cats too, but wouldn’t own one if I couldn’t control one.

Be safe Great to see the ‘Look Again’ bike safety ad on TV. But surprised it didn’t include advice to motorcyclists to wear high viz gear & ride with their headlights on at all times. The latter being great advice for car drivers too. Be safe, be seen.

I mostly shop at Countdown in town and have always found all staff helpful and friendly. They provide great service.

We have lived in Blenheim for 8 years and have never found the staff at any of the Countdown stores to be rude. I’ve found them to be most helpful and friendly.

Perhaps those people texting in complaining about the service need to get a life and smell the roses. Hopefully you get a thorn up your nose and then you might have something to complain about I would like to say the staff at Countdown Redwood town are truly amazing and work hard.

I see them helping the elderly on a Tuesday and they always take their time to chat. Very sad some people are complaining the other day I will keep shopping there, it is not their fault when staff are sick they do a great job!

Remembrance?

Really disappointed with the Marlborough District Councils non activity of a service or remembrance service or the non mention of any wreaths being laid at the clock tower in Seymour Square in memory of Queen Elizabeth 2nd.

Support workers Spare a thought for all the support workers that have to work every weekend and do not get paid time and a half or a public holidays off they do the job of nurses and are very much needed and expected to do it all, what would you do without the carers, I will tell you would be stuck, time and a half on weekends a start.

Hooked Being of the older generation I was hesitant to read the paper online but I’d have to admit I subscribed to The Sun recently and it’s wonderful. A very convenient way to read it and it looks so bold and crisp online.

I’m hooked.

In 1994, this writer was in his last year of high school. Brazil won the FIFA world cup, and Nelson Mandela was elected president of South Africa.

The year was also significant as 27 years ago, on September 21, Alzheimers Disease International and the World Health Organisation (WHO) marked the very first World Alzheimer’s Day. Alzheimer’s disease is named after German native Dr. Alois Alzheimer.

In 1906, Dr. Alzheimer noticed changes in the brain tissue of a woman who had died of an

unusual mental illness.

Allegedly, her symptoms included memory loss, language problems, and unpredictable behaviour. After she died, he examined her brain and found many abnormal clumps (now called amyloid plaques) and tangled bundles of fibres (now called neurofibrillary, or tau, tangles).

So what exactly is Alzheimers?

While Dementia is a general term, Alzheimers disease is a specific brain disease.

It is marked by symptoms of dementia that gradually get worse over time. Alzheimer’s disease first affects the part of the brain associated with learning, so early symptoms often include

changes in memory, thinking and reasoning skills.

Alzheimers NZ Chief Executive Catherine Hall says their vision is for an inclusive and dementia friendly Aotearoa New Zealand, where people living with dementia are valued and are able to participate in their families and communities while getting the help and support they need.

“September is a time to acknowledge what people with dementia and their families are going through and to think about the actions we can all take to help.”

Local support On a local level, Alzheimers Marlborough was formed to assist and support carers and families dealing with the disease. Their aim is to support and educate family members and carers of a person with dementia.

Manager Catherine Donnelly says they currently have 200 clients and carers with Alzheimers within the greater Marlborough community.

“Around 60 people with dementia attend

our day centre each week. The reason some do not attend is that they may not be ready, or acknowledge there is a problem, or they may not be suitable such as having a personal issue.”

Catherine says referrals come from a number of sources. They can be self-referrals – from family and friends or the client themselves. Others she says can come from a GP, the needs assessment service or other health professional.

Catherine’s own involvement with Alzheimer’s Marlborough came through previous roles where networking allowed her to step into the position.

“For 15 years I worked as a Diversional Therapist in two rest homes in Blenheim.

I then got a job at Age Concern (six years) and a lot of my clients either had dementia or had family members with cognitive decline.

“During this role I have always worked closely with Alzheimer’s Marlborough and in late 2020 the position of manager came up. I really enjoy working with our amazing older people in Marlborough, which I am still able to do in this position.”

“We are very lucky in Marlborough, there is a lot of help available, and helping people to access it is very rewarding.”

“We have outgrown our existing building,” she says. “We have expanded our community services and need a little more room. Hopefully we can share the exciting news in the near future.”

After meeting with Sandy Mclauchlan, the Activities Coordinator Catherine suggested a partnership between them. As a result, they have been able to utilise their garage space better at their location at 8 Wither Road. Catherine, says the help from volunteers, like Ray Partridge will allow them to set up activities either inside the garage or outside. Ray's two young sons also helped with the project.

Movement allowed me to heal

Renee Blick says growing up on Welington’s Kapiti Coast, doing martial arts and participating in any sport that her schedule would let her, led her to working in the health and fitness industry.

The 30-year-old has participated in four half marathons, a boxing fight and admits there is just something about doing things for a wider meaning.

Back in November last year, Renee decided to get her teaching certificate to become a qualified Yoga instructor and since January this year, has offered this service to the Blenheim community, all for donations.

Renee is part of the team at The PT Collective, a recognised gym facility based in Paul’s Road, Rapaura.

The PT Collective offers a variety of classes for all fitness levels and has a bunch of friendly personal trainers to support individuals and teams health goals.

“The team has definitely made this space have a welcoming feel and that’s exactly what I want people to feel when they come to Yoga. No judgement, no expectations.

Just come, as you are.”

“I started my yoga journey back in 2017, where I had experienced an ordeal that was out of my control and I needed to find a space or “movement” that not

only allowed me to heal physically, but mentally too.

“My purpose is to offer yoga to people internally (through community yoga) and externally (through supporting NZ mental health) and the motivation behind making it all for donations, takes away the financial burden and stress of commitment for those wanting to attend.”

At 23 years, Renee was diagnosed with a large cyst in the deepest part of her brain (non-cancerous) and through this time, she underwent many treatments, hospital visits and five brain operations, with her last one being 12 hour open brain surgery.

She says this all happened in a span of three years, years of pain, physical setbacks, life altering plans and knowing she would never pursue life-long passions and goals.

“Going through this at a young age and being in isolation days on end, the mental capacity and thoughts do creep up and that’s when my own yoga journey started and supported me through my transitions.

“Yoga not only helped me physically (balance/walking), but mentally and spiritually and I have made life long connections along the way. - hitting all four pillars of health and wellbeing.”

Renee believes doing yoga is in some ways a metaphor for doing life.

Early back when I was practising, the teacher expressed that true Yoga starts off your mat and it was like a eureka moment for me.

“Through breath, mindful movement and mediation, it allows you to notice the internal imbalances and supports you to move through these blockages yourself. - It’s truly inspiring.

Yoga means union and I can’t think of a better time where we all need to look out for each other.”

Renee’s yoga classes are every Wednesday, 6pm at the PT Collective, 3 Paul’s Road.

Angel Association New Zealand Executive Chair Suse Reynolds says AIM has made a real mark on Aotearoa’s early stage investment landscape in the last five years.

“It’s great to see such terrific enthusiasm for early-stage investment from the regions and not just the main centres. Marlborough has built a really vibrant and engaged angel investment community.”

She says AANZ is holding an event for the country’s really active and experienced angel investors in Blenheim at the end of September and it’s a testament to AIM that their membership already has a number of

Brian Dawson says one of AIM’s earliest investments was in the local film industry, and it is exciting to see “Northspur” having its world premiere in Blenheim. The feature film, based in an apocalyptic future Marlborough, has sold out sessions in Blenheim and is to be distributed nationally and in the United States.

Queen Charlotte netball success

The Queen Charlotte Netball team has come away with the treats after finishing the recent South Island Secondary Schools (SISS) Netball tournament unbeaten.

The tournament was held in Timaru from August 28 - September 3 and was coached

by Vanessa Hika and Hana Wilson.

Hana says the event had been postponed for the last two years due to Covid, so many of their players had never experienced what the event was like.

“Two games per day and being away from family is an experience in itself let alone the feelings that come with the success we had,” says Hana.

“We went into the tournament feeling pretty confident in the foundations we had set in the lead up. Our goal was to create a team culture that represented our most important values and felt like if we did this, success would then follow.”

Hana says as a result of this combined with the individual brilliance of each of their players, they finished the tournament unbeaten in the C grade, taking out

Ellesmere College (Leeston) 32-18 in a high-energy final.

“Not only were we presented the C Grade trophy but we also won the trophy for the highest points differential in the grade.

This is the first time that QCC has won the C grade, having come runners-up in previous years a couple of times.”

The team would like to acknowledge two QCC players who were picked in the C Grade ‘Talented Players’ list. Giovanna Burtenshaw and Kayla Bishell both received special badges and Hana says all credit goes to their hard work and consistent performances put out during the tournament.

The team included: Giovanna Burtenshaw, Sophie Frost, Kayla Bishell, Charlotte Lightfoot, Eden Hika, Jamie Cunningham, Hannah Bhandal, Kara Beattie, Eden Hika and Dakota Tepuia.

The manager was Tash Billington along with umpire Haze Tepuia.

Hana said they had huge support from their college community who were watching the final from school on a projector screen.

Fraser - mountain biking’s ‘good sort’

Marlborough Mountain Bike Club President, Fraser Brown, claimed the prestigious Mountain Bike New Zealand Mountain Biker of the Year for 2021-22 in Wellington last weekend.

Ryan Hunt, President of Mountain Bike New Zealand said the award is aimed at those all-round good sorts in the wider New Zealand Mountain Bike Community.

The criteria for the award are wide ranging, and Ryan said “the depth and breadth of Fraser’s involvement in the Club during his six years as president was the reason for the award.”

From building new events, to digging tracks, and building the club both in terms of membership numbers and through increased funding from the likes of local council, the club has gone from strength to strength under Frasers’ leadership.

Fraser said the recognition was unexpected and did really reflect on the hard work for the entire Marlborough Mountain Bike Club Committee.

Neil Sinclair, Treasurer of the Club, said that an example of Fraser’s work is the recently completed upgraded Pump Track at Rifle Range.

“The new asphalt pump track is a great example of Fraser’s contribution to Marlborough and is proving hugely popular with the local children and bikers. The pump track would not have happened if Fraser and Robin Dunn, from Marlborough District Council, had not championed the project and organized its funding and construction”.

Fraser and the club are already planning their next big project and are working with Marlborough District Council to look at the possibility of creating a new Mountain Bike Skills Park. It is planned that the skills area will have five zones with various technical features like drops, jumps and rock gardens that will allow riders to increase their skills through the gradual progression of the difficulty of the features.

“The skills park will be loved by the children as it will provide a fun and safe environment for them to ride their bikes. The skills park will not just be for the children, as it will also cater for older riders who have purchased e bikes, so they too can master basic bike skills. Neil added that “the skills zone is an important requirement in allowing the Club to host the National Schools Mountain Bike Championships in October 2023 which is estimated to contribute over $1m to the local economy.”

Robin Dunn said that it was hoped that public consultation on the proposed skills park will commence this month.

Six months ago I would’ve said dog, but a few months ago my son and I adopted a young mother cat and her kitten from the SPCA, they are awesome and we are absolutely besotted with them!  Three words to describe yourself?

I checked R.E.M. into the hotel I was working at in Christchurch, got a selfie in Melbourne with Michael Bublé (he looks great, I do not!) and had coffee sitting adjacent to Hugh Jackman and his wife (but I played it cool and didn’t talk to them so that probably doesn’t count!). I also ended up on stage with Sol3Mio during their concert – that was pretty crazy!  My favourite food to cook or eat is...?

Mexican is awesome, especially really good tacos.  The shop you can’t walk past is...?

Gordon Harris (art supply store), but locally I’m all about the coffee shops!  What’s your favourite game of sport to watch?

Not much of a TV watcher (I spend enough time in front of a screen!), prefer live sport and will get behind any NZ team.  Your dream weekend involves....?

No work! Sunshine, good food, great coffee and awesome company.  Favourite programme or series currently watching?

Again, I don’t watch a lot of TV but I did enjoy binging Virgin River.  What’s one thing on your bucket list?

NZ will always be home but I’d love to experience living overseas again at some point, somewhere in Europe - Amsterdam perhaps?

gardening this week September Gardening: By Wally Richards There are plenty of chores to attend to at this time of the year as the daylight hours increase and plants emerge from their winter rest.

Hardy plants will be showing very good growth now including the plants you do not want commonly referred to as weeds.

Unwanted plants are very valuable if you make use of them and treat them as a fodder crop.

Smaller unwanted plants should be cut off just below soil level with a sharp carving knife or sharp Dutch Hoe. This removes the root system from the foliage leaving the roots to rot off in the soil providing a rich source of food for the soil life.

The foliage falls onto the bare soil where it is quickly broken down by the soil life providing them with more substance to nurture your preferred plants.

Taller weeds can be cut down with a weed eater such as using the Pivotrim Pro attachment which are available from Mitre10 Mega stores.

(These are far superior to using the roll of weed eater plastic tape which I always found a problem using.)

After cutting down the weeds with the above you can leave the stubble unless you want to clear the ground which means cutting off the weeds below soil level with a sharp carving knife.

For really tough root systems I have used a box cutter which makes the job a breeze as long as you are careful not to cut yourself.

These methods of weeding enhances your soil or growing medium where chemical herbicides greatly harm the soil life and your plants suffer.

If you have waste areas or cobbles/ cracks where weeds flourish then sprinkle salt over the area and lightly water. The weeds are killed and stay weed free for a time.

Another safe to use remedy is mixing ammonium sulphamate at 200g per litre of water and spraying on a sunny day when the soil is on the dry side. Given those conditions, weeds are likely to be dead within an hour or two.

Spring temperatures and moisture brings out diseases to attack your plants so sprays of potassium permanganate (Condys Crystals at a quarter teaspoon to a litre of water) with Raingard added and sprayed onto the soil and plants controls a wide range of diseases and fungi nicely.

Note it will stain things like your house and fences if you are not careful, but will wash off over time.

An interesting bit of information - you

If you have waste areas or cobbles/cracks where weeds flourish then sprinkle salt over the area and lightly water. can purify drinking water of harmful bacteria by placing 3 or 4 grains into a litre of water, agitate to make water a light pink and leave for 24 hours before drinking.

Using this method means a large quantity of water can be treated saving the need to boil.

Spray the above potassium permanganate adding Wallys Liquid Copper for protection of curly leaf on stone fruit about every week till disease time is past.

Spray also your roses and other deciduous trees and plants to protect the new spring growth from diseases.

Sprinkle Wallys Neem Tree Granules under your apple trees, roses and citrus trees to reduce pest insect problems.

Use the Cell Strengthening products we wrote about a few weeks ago to strengthen your tomato plants, potatoes and tamarillo so the dreaded psyllid nymphs cant feed and ruin your crops.

If you have concerns about build up of diseases in your soil where you grow tomatoes year after year such as it your glasshouse then treat the soil with Terracin and 3 weeks later with Mycorrcin.

Ensure you store the unused bottle contents in a cool situation out of sunlight as it has live beneficial bacteria which would die if exposed to too much heat such as in a hot shed.

If you do not have any plants in your glasshouse so far, then you can burn sulphur powder inside the house to fumigate it of insect pests that maybe hiding away.

Wet times allows slime to grow on paths which can be dangerous to walk on causing one to slip and fall. Spray with Wallys Moss & Liverwort Control to kill the slime.

Also ideal to use for moss in lawns and liverwort growing all over the place. To obtain best results adjust the

nozzle of the sprayer so it is a bit of a jet which forces the product into the target area.

Does not harm plants if they are sprayed at the same time.

Start spraying strawberry plants 2 weekly with Mycorrcin which will increase your harvests by 200 to 400%.

They will fruit earlier, more fruit, larger berries and a longer cropping season.

Dont forget to also use Wallys Secret Strawberry Food for bigger strawberries.

When planting seedlings place a little Wallys Unlocking Your Soil into the planting along with a little Neem Powder to give your seedlings a good start and some protection from pests.

I favor crop cover (also sold as Bug Mesh), which is 4 metres wide. By using wire or piping to form hoops place the cover over the hoops to give protection to the young plants or seeds from weather, pests, cats and birds.

Great stuff and reusable season after season.

If you want great gardens this season then use only natural products that will not harm the soil life and earth worms.

This includes putting a 10 micron carbon bonded filter/housing onto your water tap if you have chlorine in your water supply.

I have received many reports from gardeners about how their gardens have greatly improved in health after removing the chlorine from the water they use on the gardens.

It is just common sense, a chemical poison that is added to water to kill microbes is going to do the same to the beneficial microbes in your soil and effect the valuable earth worms.

I even wonder what harm it does to our gut bacteria when people drink chlorinated tap water.

If anyone has any data on this I would be interested.

Yes, they won 39-37, thanks to a Bernard Foley brain explosion and a correct but gutsy call from referee Mathieu Raynal who’d had enough of the Wallabies time-wasting but the outcome is where the positives end.

The game didn’t flow - that’s what you get with a French referee coupled with injuries and yellow cards.

All Black teams do not let teams

come back from an 18 point deficit but this 2022 team is rewriting the rule book.

At 31-13 up in the 55th minute, the game should have been in the bag.

Great All Blacks teams of the best decade blew teams off the park with their depth on the bench and fitness in the final 20 minutes of games.

Poor defence, appalling execution of basic skills, constant ill discipline and some downright

panic saw this team wilt when closing out the final stages of the game.

The All Blacks were not patient, they blew try-scoring chances and failed to adapt to the officiating.

I’m thrilled they won, but this team is not trending in the right direction.

Hoskins Sotutu was lazy at No 8 and Scott Barrett proved he’s a lock not a loose forward.

Jordie Barrett can’t be trusted with his goal kicking but Richie

Mo’unga can.

Will Jordan is the X-factor of the backline and I fear his talents are being wasted on the wing instead of his natural fullback position.

When Wayne Smith describes Jordan as one of the most elusive runners he’s seen, much like Christian Cullen, that carries weight for me.

The fans have been crying out for consistency from Ian Foster’s team and that noise will not have died down based on that performance

on Thursday night.

Foster praised his team’s ability to win at the death but admitted his team should have controlled the advantage they earned in the second half.

On a side note, Wallabies lock Darcy Swain should get a minimum six week ban for his callous attack on the legs of Quinn Tupaea which saw the All Blacks replacement hobble off.

There’s no place for that in the game.

Crusaders camp Golf Results for Cooper and Hugh Blenheim Golf Club

Two rugby players from the Marlborough Boys’ College First XV have been recognised and named in the Junior Crusaders Squad.

Five eighth Hugh Robinson and captain and fullback Cooper Roberts are among 51 of the Crusader region’s top high school rugby prospects who have been named in the squad.

Both Robinson and Roberts will be given the opportunity to grow their game at an upcoming Junior Crusaders camp in October.

Cooper says he is excited to play and train with the best schoolboy rugby players in the region, as well as to soak up as much information as possible from the amazing coaches on offer.

“I think that my game has evolved from playing fullback which gives me some versatility in the back line. Also the ability to use my leadership skills I have developed over the year being captain.”

Meanwhile, Hugh says he is looking forward to meet and engage with people from other schools and towns, while growing his own knowledge as a rugby player. He says it’s an opportunity to show what he has done consistently this season on and off the field.

Guy Lemon, Head of Talent ID at Crusaders, says there’s a group of spotters who go

to First XV games each week and observe players.

“We convene regularly to talk about players, positions, and rankings and from there; we select a group of players for the squad.”

Guy says they look for a number of attributes depending on the position played.

“Often rugby talent is the first thing we notice, but we look for other qualities as well. Strong work ethic, leadership on the field - these are attributes we value.”

Recent first team players who have benefitted from their time as Junior Crusaders include Zach Gallagher, Dom Gardiner, and recent All Black prop Fletcher Newell.
