Bary Neal has a new-found purpose, a reason.

Bary started Hopewalk in Blenheim five years ago, a year after he lost his oldest son Matt to suicide.

The response he says from the public was amazing, with over 900 people turning up on the day.

This will be the fourth Hopewalk in Blenheim and he is confident the public will once again get behind ‘them’ and turn out on the day.

“I read about him and his story on the internet. Rob was in that dark place and wanted that dark place to be gone, so decided to end his life. Needless to say, he is here today to tell his amazing story, encouraging people all around the country. You don’t want to miss hearing him speak.”

Bary says it is great to see that over the years, people are starting to do what we (as a society) never used to do, and open up and ask for help. He says it is still very common for people, guys in particular, to bottle things up, and shut up shop, not letting anyone know what is really going on.

“If you think someone you know may be struggling, don’t wait for them to reach out for help, you reach in and offer it anyway.

“When it’s been a hard day, and even when it hasn’t, I try to get outdoors as often as I can. I find getting outside, getting fresh air in my lungs, going for a walk or bike ride, really help me recharge my batteries. It’s also a good idea to have a good friend that you share everything with, someone who isn’t just there to share the good times with you, but the dark times as well, and be totally honest and open with them.”

Hopewalk Blenheim will start at 11am this Saturday at Seymour Square where there will be a 20 minute slow walk up the river bank and back followed by guest speaker Rob, and amazing local singers.

He says after losing his son he wasn’t in a good space mentally, and like so many people when you are in that dark place, he says he just put on a brave face, smiled when he was in public, but really just stayed at home in front of the television and waited for time to pass.

“Very few people could possibly understand the pain of losing a loved one to suicide, never getting a chance to say goodbye, never knowing if there was something you could have done to help, knowing you will never see your boy play footy again, or have him pop around on his way home from work for a chat and game of table tennis, I was really hurting.

“After a few months of this, I decided I had to do something, some way of helping people struggling in that dark place, and also people struggling after losing a loved one to suicide, and it would also be beneficial to me. I found the Hopewalk movement, contacted the founder, told him my story, and here we are today, with Blenheim just one of many Hopewalks around the country, and abroad.”

Bary says actor Rob Mokaraka is their guest speaker this year.

In July 2009 Mokaraka was struggling with his mental health and attempted suicide, an experience in which he survived. He used this as the basis for a play, Shot Bro: Confessions of a Depressed Bullet, which he toured around community venues in New Zealand for three years, 2017–2020.

Making change in the community

Young and old were recognised

by Blenheim Rotary recently and the contributions they have given to the community.

Last Monday night, George Glover and Roma Wright were presented the Young Totara award and the Paul Harris Fellows award respectively.

George, 21, was acknowledged for his mental health advocacy work while Roma for her contribution as one of their Bootsales longest serving vendors.

The Young Totara award came as a surprise to George. The award recognises the positive achievements of young people, promotes sound role models for youth, and fosters responsible attitudes towards the community.

Meanwhile, Roma, 91, has been turning up to the bootsale and selling goods for well over 26 years with all the money going to charity, most recently going to St John.

“It’s because of the people, it’s like a family, “Roma says. “I sell everything that is given to me for nothing. So many people have got to know and they leave boxes of stuff at my door. During the week, I’m sorting and doing things.”

Rotary’s James Wiley says the Paul Harris Fellows Award is the highest award to receive in Rotary worldwide. Paul Harris was the founder of Rotary International back in 1905, hence the prestige of the award.

Between Roma giving to among others, the Cancer Society and St John and to Rotary via her stall fees, Roma has donated over $15,000 to the wider community.

St John volunteer Jo Douglas says Roma’s efforts are appreciated and they were more than happy to come down on the Saturday morning boot sale and make a fuss.

“She didn’t know anything about it and said she would have been dressed up. She gets her money every week and brings it down to St John and has been doing it for the past five years.”

For every PHA they give out, Rotary also donates $1,000 to the Rotary Foundation, most of which goes towards the global effort to eradicate polio.

Consultation opens on Picton’s London Quay

Plans for the proposed development of Picton’s London Quay are on display now and council wants your feedback.

Landscape architect impressions of how the quay area will look are at Picton Library and Endeavour Park Pavilion and the last day for consultation is Friday 23 September 2022.

Parks and Open Spaces Manager, Jane Tito, said council wants to find a solution to the pedestrian and traffic flow in and around cafés and business along London Quay, Picton Foreshore and Town Wharf areas.

“Council engaged a landscape architect who has consulted with businesses along London Quay including cafés and galleries, apartment owners and community and business groups and come up with the design which we are now consulting with the general public on,” she said.

Havelock Theatre - A Christmas Carol Havelock Theatre delves back to 1843 for its Christmas production for 2022.

They will be staging an adaption of Charles Dickens’ most loved work “A Christmas Carol.” Sarah Nathan, a newcomer to the Havelock stage has made the adaptation and will be directing the production.

Sarah, who was awarded Best Female Actor for her role in Havelock’s One-Act play entry into Theatre Fest, says “It is quite incredible that this play remains entirely relevant today.

It is full of glorious characters, humour and warmth - and of course a story of redemption.”

Her adaptation will be slightly condensed but will not miss any of the important storyline or fabulous characters. She has introduced music and Christmas Carols to the play so there will be a wonderful sense of Christmas spirit. “Something I suspect everyone will need especially after this year,” says Sarah.

There will be an information evening in the Havelock Town Hall tonight at 7pm with auditions in the hall on Sunday 18th.

Sarah would love to see a wide range of people and new faces from our community come along. She says there are lots of roles for all ages and abilities

and roles for those who just love to sing.

She says the hall is historic and beautiful, with its ornate proscenium arch, and it is wonderfully intimate - so will be the absolute perfect setting for this production.

Sarah has been involved in theatre most of her life. She has performed in and produced many amateur and professional productions across a range of genres from Shakespeare to pantomime to musicals to drama, comedy and improvisation.

She also appreciates the inner workings of theatre having consulted on the development of the

new Waikato Regional Theatre and worked with a global theatre design company in London and New York.

Sarah was the CEO of Creative Waikato for seven years and knows that creative expression is so very important in all communities. She was thrilled when she found out that Havelock had a thriving theatre group and is so happy to be involved.

Giving back to the Blenheim community

Beavertown Blenheim Lions President Maureen Wright knows a thing or two about giving back to those in need.

This year is Maureen’s second year as president while she has been president three previous times over her 25 year association.

In a nutshell, Beavertown Blenheim Lions is a service group dedicated to the community of Marlborough. And serve they do in every definition of the word.

“My late husband was a Lion for many years and I always took

an active interest in supporting Lions so it was a natural progression for me to become a member myself.”

Maureen says the ultimate satisfaction in the role is the opportunity to give back.

“For me being able to give back to my community and working alongside other members of my Club to make a difference to those not as fortunate as others for various reasons,” she says, “is the best part of the job.”

Maureen says due to Covid they were unable to hold their major fundraisers so their annual

amount raised was less than normal for any year.

“Already this current year we are close to having made around $18,000.”

Their last major fundraiser was the combined book sale with the Blenheim Lions Club where they jointly raised $29,000.

“We are currently considering a number of organisations we can help with our share of the money,” Maureen says.

Maureen says as a club they decide where the fundraising goes based on requests or they choose an organisation that they

are aware of that they know would benefit greatly.

The main fundraiser moving forward is the Bride of the Year Show which due to Covid they have been unable to hold the last three years. However, they are excited to be holding it again this year on November 5th.

They also continue to do smaller fundraisers throughout the year, including raffles, cheese rolls, markets and bbqs.

Indestructible fabulousness is anticipated for Blenheim Musical Theatre’s 2023 production of Priscilla Queen of the Desert the Musical.

Featuring hit songs like Hot Stuff, It’s Raining Men, Finally and I Will Survive, the musical will be performed at the ASB Theatre from May 17 - 27 (11 shows).

Like an LGBTQ and mardi gras on steroids the production explodes with riotous energy, colour, dance, song and fun. Some would even say ‘queer’.

Adapted from Australian Director Stephan Elliot’s 1994 film The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the musical tells the story of two drag queens and a trans woman, who contract to perform a drag show at a resort in Alice Springs, a resort town in the remote Australian desert.

As they head west from Sydney aboard their lavender bus, Priscilla, the three friends come to the forefront of a comedy of errors, encountering a number of strange characters, as well as incidents of homophobia, while widening comfort zones and finding new horizons.

heim Musical Theatre, 81A Lakings Road, 7pm Wednesday, September 28 where the creative team headed by Director Peter Meikle will share their vision for the show, the workshop, audition, and rehearsal process.

The creative team is: Peter Meikle (Director), Penny Wytenburg (Musical Director), Con O’Brien (Vocal Coach), Elly Molloy (Choreographer) and Production Manager Liana Bell.

Commercial manager Mike Wentworth says they are looking for actors and actresses, singers, dancers, technical team (lighting, sound), a backstage team along with hairdressers and makeup.

The set and props have been hired from Christchurch while BMT have purchased the majority of the wardrobe for the show.

The production will have an adult cast of approximately 25.

Mike says the show is going to be an absolute spectacle – over 300 outrageous costumes, a belter of well-known songs that the audience can sing along to, a bus on stage and some amazing special effects.

“A really uplifting, fun show that will be highly entertaining. It’s the musical equivalent of wearable arts.”

Mayor delivers three waters submission to Select Committee Marlborough Mayor John Leggett spoke to the Finance and Expenditure Select Committee on the Water Services Entities Bill on behalf of Council.

Mayor Leggett said he was disappointed not to be able to make his submission to the committee in person as originally planned.

“Unfortunately the rescheduling of the hearings by the Select Committee and the response to the recent weather event which was unfolding at the same time, meant travel to Wellington on the day of my allocated speaking slot wasn’t possible.”

In making his submission to the committee from Blenheim via zoom Mayor Leggett said it is important to the Council that it fully participates in the process. “Council has taken steps to remain informed of the three waters proposal so we can respond to our community in a very balanced and informed way,” he said.

Mayor Leggett told the committee Council accepts the country’s three waters sector faces significant challenges, and that the case for change is well understood. “We can’t keep kicking the can down the road on this issue but the Government’s proposal is not the right one.”

“I emphasised that the Government’s proposal to create four new mega water entities that will take water services delivery from Councils is not seen as an acceptable solution. We do not accept that a one size fits all megaentity structure will deliver results for our community,” Mayor Leggett said.

“I also underlined that the boundary issue is a particular sticking point in the Government’s proposal, with Councils in the top of the South Island already expressing concern about the potential impact of Tasman and Marlborough communities being split into

different entities.”

“Similarly it makes no practical sense for Seddon’s water scheme to be managed by Entity D, as is currently proposed, when Blenheim, located 20km away, will be managed by Entity C. How can this lead to better drinking water quality and better environmental outcomes?”

Mayor Leggett spoke of the impact of representation if Marlborough is to be one of either 21 territorial authorities to make up Entity C, or one of 23 included in Entity D as proposed. “Such representation uncertainty is unacceptable given the importance of three waters to the regional environment, health, economy, and community generally.

Celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori It’s Māori language week and this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Māori language petition.

On this day in 1972, representatives delivered the Māori language petition to Parliament.

The petition had more than 30,000 signatures, making it one of the country’s most supported petitions, and called for the active recognition of Te Reo Māori in Aotearoa, New Zealand and for the language to be taught in schools.

The first Māori Language Day was held later that year before extending to Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori/Māori Language Week in 1975. The week is part of a larger effort to revitalise Te Reo Māori/Māori Language .

The petition is often seen as the catalyst for the significant revitalisation of Te Reo Māori including Kōhanga Reo and Kura Kaupapa Māori (Māori language immersion schools).

This ‘wee she-shed’ takes style to a whole new level Grovetown wellness practitioner Lynley Clark of Grovetown is supporting Alzheimers Marlborough Foundation’s fundraising Arts, Crafts and Collections Trail on October 15-16 by displaying, and selling, her special wellness candles.

Over the two days of the arts crafts and collections trail, you’ll be able to find Lynley in what she calls her “wee she-shed” at 99 Watsons Road, Grovetown.

The shed is a recent Christmas gift from her husband, after she’d started her new candlemaking hobby in their garage.

‘Shed’ is stretching a point – the gently aromatic surroundings with the soft pastel décor and mirror-enhanced walls provide, she says, a balm for the soul.

“I just love it in here.”

A few years ago, Lynley had started a fledgling business as a wellness counsellor, but was almost stopped in her tracks by her own battle with breast cancer. Treatment and recovery took a couple of years. Then came the first Covid lockdown.

“But I’d been over to Nelson before that and remembered seeing candles there.

“Scent is one of the things that makes people happy.”

“Maybe I can do that!” she thought.

This new creative endeavour has been born although, Lynley says, she’s had no particular background in the arts generally.

“But I had always enjoyed knitting and sewing.”

Her wellness focus is underpinned by her study and work in life coaching. “I qualified in that by graduating from a correspondence course based

in Australia.”

Earlier she had done business studies qualifications through the Open Polytechnic of New Zealand’s correspondence courses, and this has also supported her wellness business.

In an odd twist of fate, her own breast cancer occurred just after she graduated as a life coach.

The-then 52-year-old says: “I was able to use what I learned to get me though.’

Lynley had a relatively rare triple negative breast cancer which is she says, trickier to treat than most. “It’s aggressive.”

It is also, she says, normally found in younger people.

“There are no hormones involved, which means it can’t be treated with the hormone pills usually prescribed for five or ten years after surgery and chemo.

“With a triple negative, you don’t have that option. After surgery and chemo, that’s it.”

She’s now five years cancer-free. “A good milestone.” And as well as her now-developing work as a wellness instructor, she’s gone on to be a spokeswoman for Pink Ribbon NZ. “My message is very much about having a mammogram – and early detection. Because that saved my life.”

Now her candle making is being blended in with her wellness work.

“Scent is one of the things that makes people happy. It’s a big driver of emotions. Calming, bringing happiness.”

There’s also more science to creating a quality candle than people realise, says Lynley.

Her focus is very much on organic additive-free candles, made of the best wax.

Wellness practitioner and candlemaker Lynley Clark of Grovetown is opening her studio in Watsons Road for the Alzheimers Foundation Arts, Crafts and Collection Trail over the weekend of October 15-16.

“The choice for Marlborough is a wax that can withstand heat and cold, that doesn’t sweat or develop frosting on the surface.”

She also says getting the right fragrance using quality natural essential oils is important.

“You can buy cheap scented

candles quite easily, but you wouldn’t know what’s in them.”

Even the tiny blooms that Lynley decorates her candles with are spray free, and from her own garden.

She started making candles to give away as gifts to family and

friend, and was encouraged to move into business with them.

And on October 15-16 you’ll be able to share her little slice of heaven as well as supporting Alzheimers Marlborough Foundation’s fundraising Arts, Crafts and Collections Trail.

The Blenheim South Rotary Club’s Mammoth Garage Sale and Book Fair is back on the community calendar.

Rotary spokesperson Kevin Moseley says he is encouraging locals to bring ‘all sorts of stuff in’ that might be lying around the house and or surplus to requirements.

Kevin says they are wanting or

seeking donations of tools and sporting equipment, kitchenware, outdoor furniture and garden tools.

Last year’s garage sale raised $35,000 with everything from books, bric-a-brac and art through to treadmills and even the more unusual finds, dentures. However, these were not sold and only found at the bottom of a bag of donated items.

This year’s fundraiser is on once

again at the Waterlea Racecourse (Linton Street entrance) from Friday, September 30 (Saturday 9am - 5pm) to Sunday October 2 (Sunday, 9am - 1pm).

Some 50 people met at the Picton Yacht Club Hotel’s conference room on Tuesday last week to discuss and question representatives “leading the charge” as the cruise ship season resumes.

On October 26, the first liner in Picton will be the 4000-passenger capacity Ovation of the Seas, though it is not expected to be full.

The meeting atmosphere was mainly positive, with applause from many after the nearly twohour long session.

A high-energy delivery from Jacqui Lloyd, general manager of Destination Marlborough and newly-elected chair of the New Zealand Cruise Association, told the audience about the three to four months of meetings already held, and the ongoing work to iron out any of the “inevitable niggles” that will occur after the 955-day post-Covid hiatus.

There was a reminder that passenger capacity was going to be limited by such factors as limitations in air capacity, restricting the number of passengers per ship which, it is hoped, will allow a graduated approach.

Those present were also reminded of the numbers of crew aboard that were significant in their contribution to the local economy.

That had reached $29m in the pre-Covid season. These are people who shopped here, visited supermarkets, had lunches, used laundrettes, had haircuts and used other facilities.

Kevin O’Sullivan of the Cruise Lines International Association said that while the lines had hoped for 70 per cent capacity, some bookings were already starting to exceed that, though he repeated that was limited by air capacity.

He added that the 2022-23 season had been a near thing, with uncertainty about the government decision on opening the borders.

He said it had put New Zealand’s involvement in doubt, and he admitted to a few anxious weeks about whether it would happen before the lines made their final decisions.

Kevin, told those present that

there had been a change from within the industry, the emphasis now on environmental sustainability and reducing the carbon footprint, as well as focussing on collaborating with local communities and away from attracting the greatest number of tourists possible.

Health protocols on all ships also now exceed those of the government, with all crews and guests fully vaccinated, and having had pre-departure and onboard Covid tests.

Concerns aired during the question and answer session included that of noise pollution from the new ferry terminal development affecting visitors. Recent pile driving had created painfully loud noise levels, the meeting was told.

PORT Marlborough CEO Rhys Welbourn addressed the issue, saying the contract will see contractors try to avoid cruise days but added a rider, that the project was one of significance at national level.

“The entire country needs a decent supply chain.”

Queries to the team also included one about the slowness of council permits for buskers, and the need to ensure quality when they were issued.

The issue of road collapses was also discussed. Some routes out of town would not be possible for buses for some time - for example Queen Charlotte Drive.

A query about the traffic obstructing London Quay was answered by MDC councillor Barbara Faull, who said they were looking at some good designs that would be coming out within weeks.

“By Easter we should see some action out of it.”

There was applause after one audience member spoke of a cruise industry contact, who said a survey of both passengers and crew had shown Picton one of the three ports in the country for high levels of satisfaction with their welcome.

In that regard, the Flower Ladies, with their corsages and buttons, and the meet and greet volunteers who help visitors in the streets, received special mention.

Blenheim’s Richard Eyles is one of them.

Richard, 65, works for ITM in Picton in the plumbing department. He says there is no irony

lost when the words plumbing and prostate cancer enter one’s vernacular, especially with regards to an adequate water supply and a safe, drainage system.

less you’re bloody dying do ya? Well, I went and he asked me to do some blood tests. I had a kidney infection at the time and I was pretty crook. To confirm it, they did additional blood tests and my PSA (prostate-specific antigen) came back as five.

“I went back another time and the blood showed a reading of six. So he asked me to undo my belt and you know what, it was nothing. He had a job to do.”

The PSA test measures the level of protein in one’s blood. PSA is a protein made by the prostate. Higher than normal levels can occur when there is a problem with one’s prostate, such as an infection, an enlarged prostate or prostate cancer.

Most men with raised PSA levels don’t have prostate cancer and some men with prostate cancer have normal PSA levels. However, high PSA levels are a risk factor for prostate cancer.

“My father died from cancer. My prostate cancer was not internal; mine was on the outside of the prostate so I didn’t know I had it.”

Richard had an operation this time last year after getting the initial diagnosis during the summer of 2021.

“The biopsy was taken by (urologist) Andy Malcolm (a medical doctor specializing in conditions that affect the urinary tract). Of the 12 that were taken, four were cancerous,” he says.

“He gave me the choice of the operation and or the treatment. It knocked the guts clean out of us (both for him and his wife).”

Last Christmas a blood test for PSA at the doctors came back at zero. Richard says cancer is certainly a horrible word but one he has come to acknowledge and respect.

“It can bring the best or the worst out of people. Even though I’ve ‘survived’

He admits cancer changed his life and the way of dealing with what is important and or a priority in life.

There’s nothing worse, he says, than worrying about what you had or have. He says it’s given him a fresh perspective. The people at Wairau Hospital and the specialists involved played a big part in his journey and recovery.

“The hospital and doctors and

everyone involved were bloody magic. Murray (Eyles) was very supportive and good to me.”

His advice to Marlborough blokes is to get over any preconceived ideas about being uncomfortable having a doctor place his fingers in an area that shouldn’t be talked about.

“I was dreading the whole thing.

My doctor was talking to me like it was nothing. I reckon I am one of many. What was I even worried about? I’m still alive.”

New fees free Prost-FIT model announced

More New Zealand men living with prostate cancer, at any stage of diagnosis or treatment, will have access to the bespoke exercise programme Prost-FIT as the Prostate Cancer Foundation of New Zealand removes class entry fees.

The Foundation’s Prost-FIT programme is a national network of exercise classes for these men, and since the 2020 Christchurch pilot, Prost-FIT has successfully rolled out across the country with registered exercise professionals delivering more than 940 class hours at a nominal fee to participants.

“We want to build on this success, so under the new model men will now have access to one free class per week for forty weeks annually, effective immediately,” says the Foundation’s Chief Executive Peter Dickens, “we know how much Prost-FIT has improved the lives of participants and are pleased to be able to remove one of the barriers to participation – the cost.”

Peter says as we head into Blue September, they are acutely aware of being the voice of the thousands of men living with the disease who deserve to have the opportunity to live their best life.

“Being active can help manage some of the common side effects of treatment, speed up recovery, improve quality of life and facilitate mental wellbeing, and research suggests that exercise may help lower the chances of cancer returning in some people by as much as 50-60%.”

Delivered in a supporting environment, with an emphasis on fun and social interaction, Prost-FIT is more than an exercise programme, offering camaraderie and opportunities for enjoyable shared experiences.

Prost-FIT was designed in partnership with Exercise as Medicine NZ, a charitable trust that specialises in exercise for people with long-term conditions like prostate cancer.

“We acknowledge the generous assistance of the Dry July NZ Trust which has enabled the implementation and growth of Prost-FIT to date, “ Peter says.

“We are excited for the future of the programme and its impact on the lives of men living with prostate cancer, and their families.”

A simple walk has become a Movement of Hope Raising awareness and support for suicide prevention

Personally impacted by the suicide of a loved one and dismayed by the lack of support available, Joseph and Lydia Fa’afiu were compelled to create a safe environment to unite people, like themselves, who have experienced similar loss of a loved one.

Their mission is to connect others, together, who have or are experiencing grief caused by losing someone to suicide.

Joseph and Lydia set a date in 2015, they created an event on social media and invited friends and family who have had similar experiences to go for a 7km walk. Their expectation was perhaps that 100 people would show up to connect. However, the event was shared widely on social media, and an overwhelming 3000 people showed up to Walk for Hope – this sent a strong message for the need in the community, and HopeWalk as a Movement was officially born.

Joseph and Lydia are passionate to break the stigma, shame and silence around suicide.

Joseph says “It’s okay not to be okay, and we need to make it a society where people feel safe to say how they are feeling, and not be embarrassed or ashamed. We all have issues.”

Their belief, and now HopeWalk’s call to action, stronger together is not only their ethos as a couple, but it permeates through to

the culture of HopeWalk as a movement. In Joseph’s words: “No single agency or group can fix this, we have to work together and be encouraged by each other, together we are stronger, together we can turn the tide.”

HopeWalk continues to grow and partner with other like-minded organisations and community groups to provide a platform for suicide prevention, intervention and postvention. Joseph has also launched and organised the Lights for Lives event ‘LinkFest’ which is a Health Promotion Festival.

HopeWalk exists to enable those affected by suicide to organise and facilitate walks, or to participate in the Movement and find support, resources and share with people who have similar stories and experiences.

Joseph and Lydia believe that the greatest prevention is to empower those who have felt the loss but can bring change, and in themselves be the champion for change for their community, and as Joseph often shares “the greatest champions of change are those affected by the cause.”

What was a simple idea has organically grown to a strong movement that now spans the length and breadth of New Zealand, and is growing internationally! “It won’t bring our loved ones back, but maybe ... it will save someone’s loved one,” Joseph shares of his hopes.

Caring for our animals The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) was founded in England in 1825 and is recognised as the world’s oldest and most influential animal welfare organisation.

From a local context, the SPCA Centre in Foxs Island Road in Renwick (previously Marlborough SPCA) has been dedicated to caring for all animals throughout the Marlborough region since 1946.

They are a small team with great voluntary support who provide the local community with an essential service, advocating on behalf of animals through education and enforcement when necessary.

They do everything they can to ensure all animals receive the love and respect they deserve.

SPCA has been protecting New Zealand’s animals for 150 years – animals who are sick, injured, neglected, abused or simply abandoned.

The SPCA is New Zealand’s oldest and largest animal welfare charity, with 31 centres across the country and over 34,000 animals coming through their centres each year.

SPCA is the only charity with the power to protect all animals including prosecuting people under the Animal Welfare Act 1999.

They need $47m to operate and they receive $2.5m from the government each year, which is earmarked for the Inspectorate.

Their founding ethos is ‘to speak for those who cannot speak for themselves’. With your support, they deliver this every day through their vision, values and policies.

Most land in the permission area is administered by the Department of Conservation but several small tracts of land held by various private and institutional owners are also included. Coordination with affected leasehold farming operations remains in place. The Acheron road is excluded from aerial application of 1080 in this operation. Commencement Date Subject to favourable weather, control is now planned to commence from Saturday 1 October 2022, with the aerial application of non-toxic cereal pre-feed pellets. This will be followed approximately 7-10 days later by the aerial application of bait containing biodegradable sodium fluoroacetate (1080). All work is weather dependent, and commencement may be later than indicated. In the event of an extended delay, further notices will be placed to advise the public.

Bait Description Aerial and ground control using 1080: • Pre-feed - Non-toxic cereal-based pellet, approximately 16 mm long, cinnamon-lured and non-dyed (straw coloured).

• Toxic bait - Cereal-based pellet, approximately 16 mm long, cinnamon-lured and dyed green with a toxic loading of 0.15% Sodium fluoroacetate (1080).

Note - all prefeed and 1080 bait for aerial and ground application will contain deer repellent.

Ground control using cyanide: • Feratox encapsulated cyanide in the form of a capsule, dyed green/blue, presented with feed-paste or similar attractant, contained inside reusable bait stations. Bait stations will be installed 130cm above the ground.

Precautions The public are reminded of the danger that toxic baits and possum carcasses pose, particularly to children and dogs.

• DO NOT TOUCH OR EAT BAITS • Children must be kept under strict supervision in the control area • Dogs must be kept under strict control at all times and not have access to, or be taken into, the control area, as they are particularly susceptible to harm from contact with toxic baits and poisoned carcasses. The risk that poisoned carcasses pose to dogs may extend downstream of the control area.

• Toxin warning signs will be installed at main public entry points and the public are reminded that it is an offence to remove this warning signage. Please follow the instructions on the signs.

• Game animals should not be sold or taken for eating from within or adjacent to this area until it is declared clear of pesticides.

Vector Free Marlborough (VFM) wishes to advise the public of its intention to aerially apply the toxin Sodium fluoroacetate (1080) to parts of Molesworth Station for the purpose of controlling possums. The Acheron East operation is being carried out on behalf of OSPRI as part of its TBfree New Zealand programme, which aims to eradicate bovine tuberculosis from wildlife vectors that pose a risk to farmed cattle and deer.

Description of Area The Acheron East permission area takes in approximately 66,168 hectares between the Acheron and Clarence catchments. The boundary of the permission area extends from the vicinity of the Acheron Campsite in the southwest and heads north to the vicinity of Isolated Saddle, taking in the east-facing catchments immediately west of the Acheron Road. From Isolated Saddle, the permission area extends to its northern most point at Wards Pass before following the Rachel Range south, taking in the Guide River and Half Moon Stream catchments and excluding the Awatere River catchment, thence in a north easterly direction to St Bernard peak at the southern extent of the Inland Kaikoura Range, before turning south to the Clarence River. The permission area then follows the Clarence River south-west before turning west toward the confluence of the Acheron and Clarence rivers in the vicinity of the Acheron Campsite.

McMILLAN, Peter Richard: Passed away peacefully on Monday September 5, 2022 at Springlands Lifestyle Village, Blenheim.

Aged 91 years. A treasured husband to the late Erica (née Beck). A wonderful father and father-in-law to Christine (Holland), Dave and Lynda (Cambridge) and Brian and Nancy (Queenstown), and Ted Baijings (Holland).

Grandad to Oliver, Jasper and Gabriel Baijings, Steve and Ricky, Brodie and Daniel and Great Grandad to Hunter. A loved brother-in-law to Rosemary and Gordon Leech.

Best mate of Wim van Velthooven and Paul Hamlyn Snr. A good honest bloke with a huge zest for life, who definitely got the most out of his 91 years. Loved by many people and renowned for his participation in various clubs (Marlborough Guild of Woodworkers and Picton RSA) and projects he supported (Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary and Waikawa Ratepayers’ Association). He will live on in our memories.

He was a great example of “arriving at the end of the journey” in a somewhat battered chassis with a few bits missing. We will all miss you Pete. Williamson and Stead should be on hot-seat There needs to be a changing of the guard within the Black Caps.

The 3-0 ODI whitewash at the hands of a mediocre Australia should force some serious thought about the where this team goes from here.

To be clear, I’ve been the founding member, president and head cheerleader of the Kane Williamson Fan Club long before he made his international debut but his batting and especially his captaincy were not up to standard during the tour.

Williamson has not been the same after he missed the entire home

summer earlier this year, due to an elbow injury, only to heal up in time to take-up his lucrative IPL contract just weeks after the home season concluded.

He is woefully out of form and like many of his fellow batters over the past week showed no intent to score or create pressure at the crease.

Williamson is a world class player and I’m sure he can and will return to that but perhaps taking the captaincy off him with the two coloured clothing might help his overall game.

The tactics during the series were

awful.

Too often, the Black Caps gained control in the field through the bowling of Trent Boult, then let the game drift.

Williamson and coach Gary Stead appear to lack a killer instinct especially against Australia - it’s like mental block.

I think Stead has taken us as far as he can and a lot of his success can be attributed in part to the platform given to him by previous coach Mike Hesson.

The Classic - Wairau Valley Golf Club The Wairau Valley Golf Club are holding their annual ‘Classic’ Golf Tournament on Friday 23rd September with the theme ‘Back In The Day’.

Club President, Mike Collins sys it serves as their annual fundraising event, with proceeds specifically targeted at course improvements and the running of the club.

‘The Classic’ is an 18 hole mens and ladies stableford competition open to all handicaps and non-golfers with places limited to just 72, on a first in first served basis.

Mike says the club is grateful to all the sponsors which will enable the club to offer a good number of prizes on the day, both on and off the course.

The cost of entry ($50/person) covers a light lunch/BBQ with special features including some special prizes (most classically dressed person, and most classic clubs used) and an auction once all golfers have finished.

He has become too passive and timid which could be partly Stead’s fault as well. Latham is an option in limited overs but I’d keep Williamson in test matches.
