Marlborough’s annual farm machinery auction is no longer.

Run by PGG Wrightson, the sale is a highlight for many rural Marlburians and has been running since the late 1950s. In recent years, the auction has been run at Aerodrome Road, Omaka.

PGG Wrightson Area Livestock Manager Peter Barnes says they made the call to ‘retire it’ as it was no longer economical to run.

“The company came to the decision to retire it, we haven’t had it for two years anyway,” he says.

“We had 180 lots in there and sell them for $20 or $40 and we can make the same revenue selling 40 cattle.

We’re up there for three days laying stuff out and trying to find people to help has become difficult.”

The auction is usually held the first Thursday in September.

Murray Neal says his family has had a long association with the event including his pop, Dad and cousins.

He says there are always hundreds of people who attended the annual auction, often to catch up with contacts they don’t see for some time.

He found out about the news when he emailed Peter and was looking at putting some machinery and grater blades up for auction.

“I said I haven’t got the email regarding the information for this year and he said we’re not running it ever again,” Murray says.

Retired Kaituna sheep and cropping farmer Bruce Davies, 84, says he’s seen auctions sadly come and go over the years.

“I’d like to think that someone will put their hand up to take it over. We used to have a weekly auction back in the day with McMurtries but that was of a few that fell by the wayside.”

Bruce acknowledged the likes of the late Vern Bissell who he says often did sterling service in the rural sector, including volunteering at auctions for very little return. He says he often gave up his time over a number of

years and says there was nobody who put their hand up or took his place.

Murray says none of his contacts and or networking knew that the auction was not taking place and or no longer.

“I’ve often dealt with Wrightson’s but I told Peter on the phone I won’t be dealing with them anymore for my stock food because they weren’t playing the game.

I asked him can’t we get someone else to run it but he says no, it’s licensed to PGG. I’m sure somebody else would like to run it?”

Sheep pens to get facelift before 100th birthday

Marlborough’s 99-year-old A&P sheep pens, a wet weather venue for the farmer’s market, are set for some major repairs.

The Marlborough District Council has agreed to fund more than $60,000, or half the cost of the repairs of the roof and building structure of the heritage-listed pens.

It comes after a historic grandstand at the A & P Park was demolished in 2019, despite the best efforts of Pouhere Taonga Heritage New Zealand to save the 1920s structure.

An independent commissioner allowed the demolition of the grandstand, but with a list of conditions to preserve the heritage value of the wider park, which included the sheep pens and the entrance gates and wall.

A report prepared for the council’s assets and services meeting last week said the sheep pavilion was officially opened in 1923, and the structure had remained largely unchanged since.

However, some pens had been removed to allow for wet weather access to the farmers market, the report said.

In 1974, the pens were sold to the Marlborough District Council, but had remained under management

of the Marlborough A&P Association. They became heritage listed in 1985.

As part of the conditions to remove the grandstand, the council also engaged with a heritage consultant to prepare a conservation plan for the sheep pavilion, which was completed in 2020. The plan enabled the restoration work and improvements to be completed.

The report said losing the sheep pens would be “significant” to the historic landscape in Marlborough, and that there was an opportunity to support the longterm survival of the building through the work.

Speaking at the meeting through Zoom, council parks and open spaces manager Robert Hutchinson said it was important to give the pavilion a good celebration for its 100th anniversary, by starting to undertake the restoration work.

Hutchinson said architects had identified issues with the building, including significant works to the roof structure and beams.

He also showed councillors images of rot in the beams, telling them the structure of the building was “compromised”. Sections of the gutter also needed to be replaced to take water away from the roof trusses.

Blenheim ward councillor David Croad asked Hutchinson if the repairs were all that would be needed.

Old Clubs of Marlborough building update The derelict old Clubs of Marlborough building at 6 Russell Street has a developer.

The Marlborough District Council says there is currently a developer doing due diligence on the building. The developer has an exclusivity agreement on the site until the end of the year.

The Marlborough District Council paid $1.33m for the 700 sq. feet building five years ago and it has remained dormant ever since.

Marlborough communities hit by the recent heavy rain will receive a further $100,000 contribution to their Mayoral Relief Fund as part of the wider Government support for the region, Minister for Emergency Management Kieran McAnulty says.

Kieran McAnulty joined Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and Transport Minister Michael Wood in Marlborough last Thursday to get a further sense of the damage from the recent severe weather and recovery operation underway, and to meet people providing ongoing support to the community.

“Nearly a week has passed since the state of emergency was lifted, and despite good progress, dozens of homes are still uninhabitable or severely damaged, and a number of remote communities are without road access. We know that while the severe weather event itself was over in a matter of days, recovery is likely to take years.

“The additional contribution brings the Government contribution to Nelson/ Tasman and Marlborough’s Mayoral Relief Funds to $500,000. These contributions are in addition to targeted support from other government agencies.

“We don’t know what those costs will be, we don’t know what those repairs will be, we’ll just have to deal with them at the time,” Hutchinson said.

“Long-term there is budget ... to deal with maintenance issues in the future.”

A&P Association Marlborough president William Harris told councillors they planned to do some fundraising to meet the other half of the costs. Details were being finalised, but it could include members of the public sponsoring a sheet of iron. The total quoted cost of repairs was T$127,500.

Baby seal found Wairau Valley FinanCe oPTionS aVailaBle

Veterinarian Dr Jeremy Forlong received a rather unusual call last Wednesday night.

Owner of Springlands Veterinary Centre Dr Jeremy says the call confirmed that a baby seal was found up the Wairau Valley.

“It wasn’t the usual call. It’s probably come up the river and onto a farm. It’s the first time I’ve had a seal-related phone call.”.

When approached by the Sun Newspaper, animal control declined to comment.

Dr Jeremy says he was unsure how old or what the gender was and says her thin complexion suggests she was perhaps in ‘unusual circumstances’ and surroundings.

“It managed to drink some water overnight which was great. It’s quite a sight to see, you never get quite this close to a seal. It seems quite relaxed, albeit tired. Possibly has lost its mum and has been on search mode.

DOC South Marlborough Senior Biodiversity Ranger Pat Crowe says two rangers picked it up from the vet last Thursday. He says, it was agreed with the vet the seal was healthy enough to be released and the rangers released it that day at White’s Bay, where it swam off in the sea.

Pat says they don’t know the sex of the seal but it would have been born in the last summer breeding season so is less than a year old.

“It’s not unusual for seals to be found some distance inland. From July to September each year there’s an influx in adolescent seals appearing on our shores and further inland. This is because seal pups begin to wean as their mothers prepare for new pups,” says Pat. “Seals can wander as far as 15 km inland, often by following rivers and streams. They can appear in unusual places, such as a paddock, roadside or an inner-city street. This is a normal occurrence from exploratory behaviour.”

Gascoigne Street closed for sewer main upgrade works An upgrade of the sewer main in Gascoigne Street will mean road closures in the area from Monday 5 September.

For the past few weeks council staff has tried to repair the sewer pipes but they have faced constant blockages, collapses and breakages.

Council’s Operations and Maintenance Engineer, Stephen Rooney, said the team has been working three and a half metres below ground and has faced numerous issues.

“We initially fixed a broken pipe, but it collapsed so we patched it and now the pipe next to the patches has failed,” he said.

“We are having issues with groundwater and silt and the only solution is to put in a new sewer pipe.”

While work is underway, Gascoigne Street traffic will be diverted via Holdaway and Lucas Streets as the Gascoigne Street/ Budge Street intersection will be closed; however, access for property owners into the closed section of road will remain.

Queen Charlotte Relay postponement The Queen Charlotte Relay scheduled for Saturday, September 17 is now on Saturday. December 3.

Race convenor Craig Harford says there was considerable damage to roading and infrastructure along the route from Picton to Havelock.

After inspecting the Queen Charlotte Drive by bike last Sunday and talking to Marlborough Roads the decision was made to postpone the date.

Dear Ed, Have to feel for all the truck drivers in Picton who are now being picked on by the council for parking up while waiting for the ferries.

One can understand if they are parked down side streets blocking people’s driveway views, but around Nelson Square? They are not doing any harm. Besides, there are even buses

parked there at times.

One would think the council would arrange a truck stop near the ferry terminal where trucks can park up with easy access if they are so concerned about parking. And without charging the truckies as well.

Senior housing development site blessed

Council rubbish bags Over the past four weeks Council has received feedback from Marlborough residents about the quality of its refuse bags.

Council’s Solid Waste Manager, Alec McNeil, says while this year’s bags are the same specification and standard as previous years some residents have reported issues with them.

“We want to fix this problem to ensure the community is satisfied with the bags allocated to them and that they are fit for purpose,” Mr McNeil said.

“Some of the bags returned to Council by residents have now been sent back to the supplier for testing against the specification,” he said.

“I’d like to thank the community for their feedback and for bringing the issue to Council’s attention.”

“In future, we ask residents to please return any defective bags to Council so we can exchange them. Please note though that the old stock of bags has now been depleted so no new for old exchanges are possible,” Mr McNeil said.

Council will begin community consultation towards the end of this year on the introduction of wheelie bins in July 2024.

A site blessing of Council’s new senior housing development in George Street was celebrated this morning. on Friday.

Council purchased 85 George Street in 2012 due to its location next to Council’s existing senior housing complex Vevian Place.

The dwelling was removed and local architecture firm Palatchie Architecture and Design designed a two storey complex featuring 12 one-bedroom residential units - six on the ground floor and six on the top floor, accessible by a lift.

Work is due to start any day by local company T and D Construction Ltd, who were awarded the build contract after

a local tender process.

“The build is the first in Council’s senior housing portfolio to have two storeys which maximises the excellent site just a few blocks from the town centre,” Clr Brooks said.

Council’s Project and Contracts Manager, Maighan Watson, said the project aims to increase senior housing supply in Marlborough with fit-forpurpose, centralised housing for seniors.

“Currently there is a waitlist of senior residents requiring accommodation in Marlborough - these units will help alleviate that demand by adding to Council’s existing 178 units,” she said.

one on one with the Sun

The astounding world of classical music Elgee Leung considers Blenheim his home, where he works for Framingham Wines, the Portuguese-owned winery. He caught up with Chris Valli from his parents’ house in the UK about all things wine and orchestral music and why they both hold a special place for him.

Framingham Wines Customer Experience Manager Elgee Leung was in Germany last week actively involved with the season’s vintage.

Originally from Hong Kong before he moved to Marlborough, the 35-year-old worked as a musician for over a decade.

“Like most Hong Kong kids, I was forced by my parents to learn a musical instrument. Since my elder brother was already learning the violin, the cello was chosen for me. I hated practising but somehow managed to pass my graded exams and diplomas with high distinctions at quite a young age and won a few prizes in national competitions, so the path to a musical career naturally chose me.”

Elgee says the more he was exposed to the astounding world of classical music, the further his passion developed.

After studying briefly at the Arts Faculty in Hong Kong University, he continued to study cello performance with Yi-Bing Chu, Catalin Ilea, and Jens Peter Maintz in Berlin and Beijing. He has performed extensively as a soloist, orchestral cellist, chamber musician, and conductor. He also maintained a keen interest in cello ensemble music, co-founding and leading some of the first cello ensembles and orchestras in Hong Kong.

Elgee featured as the soloist in a Chopin’s 200th Anniversary concert in 2010 at Agnes b. Theatre Hong Kong performing Chopin’s complete works for cello and piano. He formed a duo with his pianist wife Josie Yau in 2011.

Since then they have performed in more than 50 concerts in Hong Kong, China, Europe, and New Zealand.

In 2016, he took part in the world premiere of The Martyrdom of St Cecilia by David Urrows as assistant cello principal. In addition to conducting some of the finest youth orchestras in Hong Kong, including Hong Kong Junior Chamber Orchestra and Hong Kong Youth String Orchestra, Elgee remained a keen interest in training engaging school orchestras as part of his diverse teaching career.

Over the past thirty years, he says he was ‘very lucky’ to have studied and worked with many world-class musicians. Although music is no longer his profession, he believes his identity as a musician would never cease to exist.

So what brought him to Marlborough?

“Fear. I feared the inevitability of Hong Kong falling into Chinese totalitarian rule. I feared another pandemic coming from China after experiencing SARS in 2003. I feared WWIII. So, four and a half years ago, I made a tough decision for my wife and I to leave our comfortable life in Hong Kong and start a new adventure.”

He admits New Zealand was his ‘safe’ choice. He also decided to make a career change, so he first came here with a student visa to study winemaking and viticulture at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology (NMIT).

Does he prefer conducting and or performing?

“I would say I prefer conducting

nowadays as I struggle to find time to practice for cello performance, but I do miss the adrenaline rush in performing a demanding programme on the cello.”

He adds conducting is all about interpreting the music and helping the composers to bring their music alive by spontaneously controlling each of the 20-30 individual parts played by sometimes up to a hundred musicians without any verbal communication.

“The basic requirements are great aural skills, the ability to read a score with a dozen staves both vertically (harmonically) and horizontally (melodically), and good conducting techniques. A fine conductor should have an insight of the musical styles and contextual backgrounds of all standard orchestral repertoires across the past three centuries, vast knowledge about every orchestral instrument, and the charm required to bring the best out of each player.”

He confesses because he is from a purely classical music background his definition of music is rather narrow.

“Many people had the misconception that classical music used to be pop music many years ago. That’s totally wrong.

Historic equivalent of modern-day pop music that remained became folk music.

Classical music is still being composed nowadays. It’s just a different genre, in which composers follow and contribute to the evolution of an esoteric tradition that began with mediaeval sacred music i.e. Gregorian chant.”

“I told her, I think I was, and then they allowed me to join.”

The Marlborough Civic Orchestra is the only symphonic orchestra in Marlborough consisting of about 40 instrumentalists and run by a group of dedicated volunteers, including Elgee.

“We aim to promote orchestral music to the public and provide the opportunities for amateur, semi-professional, and ex-professional musicians and students to perform in an orchestra at the highest artistic standard possible.”

The next MCO concert will feature a selection of movie music with guest conductor Jason Balla from Nelson on November 12 at the ASB Theatre. He says they are also finalising the details for another classical music concert in July/August 2023.

“In the long-term, our mission is to establish a community music school to expose our youth to classical music and opportunities to learn orchestral instruments, but we are short in funding and need more volunteers to continue to progress.

Classical music is an acquired taste and this culture takes a long time to establish in a community.”

New sewer main for Murphys Road The second stage in a series of upgrades to infrastructure services in Murphys Road is about to get underway with the laying of a new pressurised sewer main.

Council’s Assets and Services Manager, Richard Coningham, says over the past eight months Marlborough Lines have been upgrading underground power cables on the eastern side of Murphys Road. “Now that this work is nearing completion, Council can carry out its planned sewer upgrade which will occur on the western side of Murphys Road, north of Ward Street,” Mr Coningham said.

“Council considered working at the same time as Marlborough Lines, in an effort to minimise the effects on residents and motorists, but this was deemed impractical as both projects involve critical infrastructure and require separation within an already congested corridor,” he said.

Work on the sewer upgrade is expected to take a couple of months to complete, during which time minor disruptions may occur.

The affected area is the western side of

Murphys Road, between Old Renwick Road and Ward Street. The disrupted areas will be limited to 200m at a time and detours will be signposted to minimise delays where possible.

Residents will continue to have access to their properties except when the excavations are immediately passing their access. When this occurs residents will be given 48 hours’ notice by the contractor before any work begins.

Mr Coningham said following the sewer upgrade, a third and final stage of work will be carried out which will see the upgrade of the water mains on Murphys Road. “The timing of this work is still to be confirmed as there are a number of other planned water upgrades in the Springlands area and we want to ensure traffic flows are affected as little as possible.”

“Council appreciates the patience of residents in Murphys Road as these upgrades take place,” he said.

The work being carried out on Murphys Road will help satisfy demands from the new Summerset complex and accommodate development within the surrounding areas.

A new stop sign has been installed recently on the intersection of John and Seymour Sreets.

Nigel Perry says if travelling north on Seymour Street and entering the one-way section past the court house, the exit onto John Street is now controlled by the Stop sign. Previously John Street traffic had to give way at the Seymour exit. Nigel says care is required as all the old give way signs and road markings are still in place and not clearly defined.

Cruise ship season plans progress

As Picton, and Marlborough generally, prepares for the arrival of the first cruise ship here after a hiatus of two years, a public meeting was held in Picton on Tuesday September 6 at 3pm in the Picton Yacht Club Hotel.

The 4000-plus passenger capacity vessel, the Ovation of the Seas arrives on October 26, in what are not only the season’s first for Picton, but one of the very first ships to be welcomed back to New Zealand.

Destination Marlborough general manager Jacqui Lloyd says that the changes that have been made within the industry since then means the update is ideal for any business or members of the public who would like to understand more.

Jacqui, newly elected as chairperson of the New Zealand Cruise Association says: “Preparing for cruise visits is a team effort and those attending heard from representatives of Port Marlborough, Marlborough District Council, Destination Marlborough, and the New Zealand Cruise Association with a facilitated question and answer session.

She adds that this season is going to be an interesting time “and we need to think about how we get it right”, pointing out however, that the numbers aboard the ships will be limited by the current limitations in the air capacity that brings the passengers to New Zealand.

Rhys Welbourne, Port Marlborough CEO, is confident that Picton is very well-placed to deal with the resumption of the season.

“Prior to the pandemic our teams were well versed with the processes for bringing in, berthing and hosting cruise ships. Luckily we have a superb port and marine team who were excited to once again welcome the industry and had no problems getting back into action.”

He says the New Zealand Cruise Association Conference was held two weeks ago in Auckland, with ports, cruise lines and industry partners joining to celebrate and discuss the return of cruise tourism to New Zealand.

“And Marlborough has a ‘Cruise Think Tank’ which meets regularly.”

“We are pleased to be able to support the visits of 50 cruise ships this season. We partner with Destination Marlborough and local businesses to ensure that we are all working together to ensure that our visitors have a great experience, and to ensure the best outcomes for Marlborough.

“In terms of sustainability of the visitor economy, we carefully schedule visits to ensure the community has a breather and that customer experience is maximised when they do come.”

He says the port’s focus is ensuring the ships come through the Marlborough Sounds safely (pilotage) and berth safely, and that all the logistics and services are available and coordinated to enable the ships and passengers coming here.

“And the construction of Waimahara Wharf in Shakespeare Bay, the deepest natural port in New Zealand, has meant the port can accommodate larger vessels.”

He’s confident that the construction of the new ferry terminal will not have any effect on the industry. “One of the focuses for the iReX project team has been the delivery of the project in the busy port environment with minimal business disruption to other activities.”

Sir Ed visits Spring Creek School

The oldest building at Scott Base, a hut built by a Sir Edmund Hillary-led team, visited Spring Creek School in Blenheim, in virtual reality form last Friday.

The Antarctic Heritage Trust’s roadshow was greeted by 50 enthusiastic students.

Developed in partnership with Auckland University of Technology and Staples VR, the virtual reality (VR) experience allows users to explore Sir Edmund Hillary’s hut in Antarctica.

The experience provides insight into how the 23 men in Sir Ed’s team lived and worked in the world’s most extreme environment more than 60 years ago.

Principal Debbie Stanger says the visit linked to the inquiry curriculum which the children had been focusing on in class.

“They loved the experience,” Debbie says. “The interactive nature of the experience was outstanding.”

The Trust has already shared the experience with thousands of people around New Zealand and has recently created a new version that allows for even more exploring of the hut with additional interactive features, including archival audio of Sir Ed and other members of his team (thanks to the RNZ collection at Ngā Taonga Sound & Vision).

The experience also includes photo galleries showing historic images of the experiences, science, landscapes and

wildlife, and contemporary images of the conserved building and its artefacts today.

The Trust’s Chief Operations Officer Francesca Eathorne, who oversaw the project development, hopes the VR experience inspires people to learn more about Antarctica and the nation’s most famous son.

“Sir Ed’s hut is part of the rich history of Antarctic exploration and we are excited to bring this experience to as many people around New Zealand as we can.”

“Most people will never get the chance to visit Antarctica so virtual reality is a fantastic way to give people a glimpse of what it would be like to visit this special place. Hopefully, the fascinating stories of what Sir Ed and his team achieved furthering science and exploration will inspire the next generation of explorers.”

Hillary’s hut was Scott Base’s first building and was built by a team led by Sir Ed to support the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic Expedition and the International Geophysical Year.

The Trust cares for this hut and four other historic expedition bases in Antarctica. The Trust conserved Hillary’s Hut in time for Scott Base’s 60th anniversary in 2017.

Users can tour the five rooms of the building, viewing hundreds of artefacts from the early years of New Zealand’s Antarctic programme, while learning more about New Zealand’s first presence in Antarctica.

Grey Power Marlborough had its last meeting with the outgoing Mayor John Leggett in August. Mayor Leggett has been an avid supporter of Grey Power in Marlborough and we have had a great relationship with him and his team. We hope to have the same relationship with the incoming Mayor and to work alongside council to continue to support seniors in this arena.

Marlborough District Council, unlike many other councils around New Zealand, is very supportive of seniors by continuing to have housing stock available for seniors and building on this stock when they can. They also provide the Access & Mobility council sub-committee, the Housing Group, hosted through council, and the Older Persons Forum meetings. Council has also committed to a 2022-2027 ‘Marlborough Age Friendly’ strategy with many actions to complete by that time.

Grey Power Marlborough also facilitated three meetings to meet the hopeful candidates for the local elections to be held in October this year. There were two in Blenheim and one in Picton.

Unfortunately, not all candidates could attend these meetings due to the recent weather events, but twenty candidates attended these three meetings. About one hundred members of Grey Power and the general public attended to listen to what the candidates had to say.

While there were still candidates standing for re-election there were many new faces that were standing for the first time. The wealth of knowledge these candidates brought to the meeting was enlightening and all of them were passionate about continuing to support Marlborough through being on the Marlborough District council.

Scam Alert Pete Matcham, Transport National Advisory Group Chair of Grey Power, advises of a scam circulating re Waka Kotahi – NZ Transport Agency.

Waka Kotahi is encouraging people to be vigilant, because of a number of online scams targeting vehicle owners. They included scammers pretending to be Waka Kotahi representatives and asking drivers to urgently renew their licences, another saying the driver had overdue toll payments, and another claiming the driver was owed a refund. A link in the emails then transfers drivers to a fraudulent website.

We all know how it feels to be a happy customer, and how we feel if services don’t meet our expectations. Feeling happy with the care you have been given is even more important when receiving a health service or support from a disability service.

If you are unhappy about a disability or health service you are or have been getting, advocates from the Nationwide Health and Disability Advocacy Service are available to provide free support to help you resolve those concerns.

In New Zealand, we have the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights, or the ‘Code’ for short. Under the Code you have rights and providers have duties.

Among other things, the Code states that service providers must treat you with respect, fairly and without discrimination or pressure, and provide enough information to allow you to make an informed choice about the services you receive.

You must always be able to ask questions, seek support, and tell someone if you don’t feel comfortable with something.

Disability services come under the Code Rights. The Code covers a broad range of services that people with disabling conditions use for their care or support. This includes services that promote independence, as well as goods, services and facilities. If you are not sure if a service comes under the Code, please contact an advocate to talk.

Most of the time you will be happy with how you have been treated, but when you’re not, you have the right to complain to the person or place providing the service, or you can ask for help from the free advocacy service to make your complaint. Complaints help providers to identify where they can improve services and most welcome feedback.

gardening this week Alternative weed controls: By Wally Richards Chemical herbicides aren’t the only option available. There are a number of other products which are handy weedkillers but which don’t do as much damage as do the chemical herbicide products.

Oils added to water and sprayed over the foliage of plants in certain conditions will dehydrate or bleach the foliage, destroying everything growing above the ground.

Thus any cheap cooking oil mixed with water adding the same amount of dish washing liquid as oil then sprayed over weeds on a hot sunny day when the soil is on the dry side, the foliage of the sprayed plants will begin wilting very quickly within minutes even.

If it is applied in cooler weather, or when the soil is moist, the killing action will take longer, and might not even work at all.

Ratio to use will depend on several factors you could start off say 100 mils of used cooking oil with 100mils of dish washing liquid into a litre of water.

That may dehydrate some weeds and other weeds may need a stronger solution. Of course you can spray it undiluted for maximum effect.

Plants are at their most vulnerable in sunlight on hot sunny days when moisture levels in the soil are low.

It is then that the roots of the plants will be gathering moisture as fast as possible to send upwards to replace the moisture lost through leaf transpiration.

When water is being lost from the leaves faster than it can be replaced, plants will be seen to wilt or droop.

This is most noticeable on hot sunny days, when leaves wilt during the day but come right as the sun goes down and the moisture level of the plant’s cells is replaced.

Foliage that remains starved of moisture for too long will dry out and is unlikely to recover.

You might notice that only parts of a leaf will be affected, perhaps only the tip or the edges. When oil is applied to the foliage in these conditions, all the leaves and stems are likely to wither and die, effectively killing the plant’s foliage.

If the plant is an annual, this will deprive the root system of energy, and it too will wither and die.

If the plant is a perennial, it will have the ability to send up new foliage from it roots, tuber or bulb, and it may well survive.

But if we keep spraying new foliage as it appears, doing the work in ideal hot sunny conditions, the roots or the bulb will eventually run out of energy and fail completely, causing the plant to finally die.

By adopting this method, we’re simply applying the basic principle that no plant can survive indefinitely without foliage as it loses its ability to gather energy from the sun.

If we simply keep cutting the foliage at ground level (as soon after it appears as possible), the plant will eventually die. The well-known Dutch Hoe, with its sharp edges, was designed for just this purpose.

Used against weed seedlings, the hoe would be placed just under the surface of the soil and then pushed forwards so that its sharp edges sliced off the weeds just under the surface, killing annual weeds and knocking back perennial weeds.

The fallen foliage is left on the soil to be re-absorbed back into the soil.

The latter may need a further treatment or two using the same method to finally finish them off.

If the hoe is used when the weeds are very young, it will successfully kill both annual and perennial weeds which have grown from seed. The older and more established the perennials, the more treatments will be required to get rid of them.

There are several common household products

which can be used for non-selective weed killing, including any salad or cooking oils, vinegar and salt plus bleaches and acids.

(I spoke to a old farmer recently who told me they used to use sulfuric acid to remove the potato crop foliage prior to harvesting the tubers. Said it worked very quickly but could not remember the strength of the solution) You need only to experiment a little with various dilution rates to see what works best for you.

Good old common table salt, purchased in bulk or in kilo bags, is probably the cheapest natural weedkiller available to everyone.

Use it at the rate of 240 grams (about 12 heaped tablespoons) to a litre of warm or hot water to dissolve it, and then spray it on the foliage of the weeds, again in sunny dry conditions.

Then stand back and watch the plants shrivel over time. Annuals will be seen going off quite fast, with perennials probably needing further salt treatments.

If you are finding that you are not getting the kill coverage you want, then increase the amount of salt to about 500 grams to a litre of water.

You will find that a little trial and error will indicate the level of salt needed to do the job well, without using too much. Applying extra amounts of salt over an extended period of time will eventually harm the soil.

If you are spraying only the foliage, and at the above rates, there will be, little residual damage done to the soil.

To make absolutely sure, give the area a good watering after the weeds have died. Adding Raingard to the salty water at a rate of 1ml per litre of water should also help the salt adhere to the surface of the foliage.

Salt can also be applied dry on cobbles to kill weeds in joints or cracks.

Another home product which is useful is white vinegar. It is made from ascetic acid which, in its undiluted state, can be quite dangerous to play with if you don’t know what you are doing.

Only small amounts of ascetic acid, probably about 100ml to 1 litre of water, are needed to make a strong white vinegar.

If I remember correctly, it becomes a good weedkiller if diluted to the rate of about 15-20% acid. Salt is certainly much safer to use, and can be purchased cheaply in bulk.

Many years ago, and probably still today in some places, many people did their own oil changes on their vehicles, primarily to save on the cost of having a garage do it.

The old oil from the sump would then be poured

over areas where gardeners didn’t want plants to grow - it was often applied to grassy areas of parks to mark out the lines for football fields and the like.

The strip over which the oil was poured would be bare of grasses for a long period of time. Diesel, at about $2.50 plus a litre, (price varies) is a very good weed killer, used either as a spray to knock out weeds with a short-term residue growing in waste areas, or as a drench for longer term control.

Likewise, salt applied directly to the soil in reasonable quantities will also give a long-term control, depending on the amount applied to an area.

Simply apply the salt and leave it to get all those unwanted plants out of our cobbles or pathways it’s a cheap and easy solution.

Sulphate of ammonia (which is another type of salt with nitrogen), was once another very popular weedkiller for spot control. It was also relatively inexpensive if purchased in 25kg bags from stock and station agents.

All that’s required is about a tablespoon of sulphate of ammonia powder placed onto the crown or centre of a weed. Left alone, the dry salts will burn out the crown of the weed, killing it outright.

As it is nitrogen, the control residue level lasts only for a short time. Some gardeners use this product on flat weeds in lawns - and indeed it can be a reasonably successful lawn weedkiller if mixed in with sand to get an even spread over the lawn.

This is called Lawn Sand, and here’s how to make your own.

Take 5kg of sharp sand (plasters sand preferably - don’t use river or beach sand as it can contain weeds of its own), together with 700 grams of sulphate of ammonia, and 300 grams of sulphate of iron.

The iron aids in making the area more acidic, and helps to burn mosses. Mix this all well together, and apply at a rate of 30 grams per square metre.

Do it ideally in dry weather conditions when rain is unlikely - if it does rain soon after application, the Lawn Sand will be less effective. Grasses which come into contact with the Lawn Sand will turn brown, but should bounce back after a week or two.

Another compound called Ammonium sulphamate mixed at 200 grams per litre of water and sprayed over weeds is also a very effective way of getting rid of them as they quickly compost down.

Watered over the foliage of oxalis into the soil it will compost the bulbs and help you get rid of this pest weed.

Mind blowing support in Rai Valley

They say farming is hard to beat on a good day, a statement I certainly couldn’t disagree with.

As a dairy farmer in the Rai Valley, I can definitely say we haven’t seen many good days these last couple of winters.

To survive as a farmer you have to be an optimist, you have to be adaptable, and you have to have a good support network. These last few weeks have definitely put that to the test in the Top of the South.

After a dismally wet and cold start to the farming season last year, hopes were high for a drier winter and warmer spring this year, but those hopes were short lived, with more wet days this winter then last.

Just as things seemed to be coming right, after a week of calving cows in the sunshine, we were hit with not just one big flood, but three big floods in three days.

These times of year is busy enough, right in the middle of calving, but add floods of this scale on, and things go to a whole new level. Not only do you have to carry on with the rigors of a normal calving, but now there is a whole lot more to think about. Where can I put my stock so they are safe, and I can feed them, and they won’t make mud?

What kind of damage will this be doing to my farm? Will I be able to milk my cows? How long before the tanker can collect my milk? All these questions require a lot of brain power, and on an already tired mind it can really take its toll.

As the floodwaters start to reside, the phone starts to ring. Neighbouring farmers checking in to see how you are doing and if you are ok, local reps and suppliers seeing what help and supplies are needed, and locals from the community rallying people to help in some way.

your communities and industry are like, and I can honestly say that I feel humbled and privileged to be part of this community and this industry.

The amount of help and support we got and are still receiving is mind-blowing. We had teams of locals going around cleaning off fence lines and putting wires back up, making paddocks available for stock to graze again. We had people at Rai School and Te Hora marae cooking meals for weary farmers and local helpers.

On the farming side, we had people offering to take stock for the worst affected farms, we had truckloads of

feed and the transport of it donated, worth tens of thousands of dollars, we had Fonterra’s emergency response team, university students from Lincoln, and farmers from Canterbury and even the North Island come in to help repair and rebuild fences.

There is still a long way to go in the journey to recover from an event like this, and a lot of pain to be felt in lost production, pastures, and profit, but seeing the community, farmers, and industry partners come together to help us through these times confirms there is no other industry I would want to be a part of.

Tighter rules for foreign forestry sales

The government has approved the sale of a further 7100ha of sheep and beef farms to foreign buyers to convert to forestry, but also announced a tightening of rules governing future such sales.

Two neighbouring East Coast stations, Huiarua (4912ha) and Matanui (1200ha), are in the latest tranche of five properties to be sold to foreign buyers that have been approved by the Overseas Investment Office (OIO).

The two East Coast farms were bought

by Ingka Group, the largest franchisee of IKEA stores internationally, and it plans to plant 4900ha in rotation forest between 2023 and 2026.

Ingka Group has in recent months bought several properties, including a large farm in South Otago.

Three other sales approved in June by the OIO are for a 421ha property at Tuapeka, bought by Swiss company Corisol; 236ha at Masterton, purchased by Austrian com-

pany Johannes Trauttmansdorff-Weinsberg; and 333ha at Hastings to Greendom, owned by Italian and Swiss interests.

All these sales were approved under the OIO’s special forestry test, but the government has announced that applications by foreign nationals to purchase land for conversion to forestry after August 16 will be treated under the more stringent “benefit to New Zealand” test.

Under the special forestry test, applicants must use the land exclusively, or nearly exclusively, for forestry, replant after harvesting unless exempt, and not live on the land.

Applicants will have to show benefits to the economy and the natural environment, promote public access and protection of historic heritage, advance a significant government policy and show oversight or participation of New Zealanders and consequential benefits.

Paddock selection critical when establishing winter crops Farmers are being encouraged to carefully consider where and how they will establish next winter’s forage crops taking into account soils, water bodies and regulations.

Beef + Lamb New Zealand’s Environmental Policy Manager Heather McKay is urging farmers and contractors sowing winter feed crops this spring to consider both the intensive winter grazing regulations (which come into force November 1) and the environmental impact of growing and grazing those crops.

This means selecting the appropriate paddocks to minimise run-off while maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare.

“The way the crop is established, the type of crop, matching the stock class with the soil type and the appropriate grazing management can all help ensure soil, water and nutrient resources are retained within the paddock and not lost to the environment,” Heather says.

Marlborough Motorcycle Riding School is based in Blenheim and run by the team of Jane and John Laing.

They have been involved in motorcycling for 50 plus years and with John’s riding experience and Jane’s organising skills they set up and have been operating rider training and licensing service successfully since the beginning of 2011.

They are accredited by New Zealand Transport Authority (NZTA) to train and test the basic handling skills prior to obtaining your learner motorcycle license and the CBTA assessment for your Restricted and Full licence test.

“We offer one on one training sessions that are suited to your riding experience towards being able to pass the licence tests or simply to improve your riding skills.

“We have bikes available for people to learn on especially the basic handling skill for the learner license as most don’t have a bike at this stage. We also have a LAMS approved bike for use to help people move through

their 6R or 6F license class if they don’t own a LAMS approved bike anymore.”

The Learner Approved Motorcycle Scheme (LAMS) is an initiative that identifies motorcycles that are considered suitable for motorcycle learners and for all riders in their first year after progressing from a motorcycle learner licence.

John says their aim is to help Marlborough riders to ride well with good skills so that they enjoy and get the most out of their riding experience in this area that is suited for great motorcycling adventures.

Springboks and All Blacks need each other These Jekyll and Hyde All Blacks are baffling at best.

The 53-3 romp over Argentina was the ideal response to the awful defeat to the Pumas seven days prior but why are there such wild swings in consistency?

It’s likely to have something to do with the state of Southern Hemisphere rugby which looks like it is a couple of steps behind the northern lot coming out of this

global pandemic.

This is not a vintage crop of All Blacks’ players, that much is clear but it seems both South Africa and New Zealand have been left in poorer states because they no longer play each other at Super Rugby level.

The greatest rivalry in the sport has also been shown to be a rivalry of need.

Both countries are better for

being exposed to the other.

The Wallabies and Pumas are both trending in the right direction but their expectations are far lower than that of the All Blacks and Springboks and neither of those two teams seems settled at the moment.

I’d boldly claim France, Ireland and Wales all have a better chance of winning next year’s World Cup than any Southern Hemisphere

team.

Somehow the All Blacks lead the Rugby Championship despite their historic struggles this season.

It shows to me that the European and UK teams have been able to come out of the pandemic in far better shape.

Is it possible to get South Africa back in Super Rugby? Logistically it may be challenging and

financially even more difficult.

However, the product on these shores would be greatly improved and it would be mutually beneficial to all four Rugby Championship nations.

There will be three teams on the other side of the world licking their lips at the prospect of claiming their first Webb Ellis Trophy.

Right now, they have nothing to fear in this part of the world.

Love Tennis open day

More than 150 tennis clubs across New Zealand are putting final preparations in place for the annual Love Tennis national open day, a fun, free opportunity for everyone to experience what a great game tennis is.

This weekend, it’s the Marlborough Tennis Club’s opportunity (Pollard Park courts) with activities for all ages including coaching sessions and court play.

Tennis New Zealand CEO Julie Paterson says tennis is a sport for everyone and the Love Tennis open day event is the perfect time to find out more about what your local club can offer.

“It’s heaps of fun, no experience is necessary, and it’s free for all ages and abilities,” Julie says.

Love Tennis takes place this Sunday from 11-4pm and is free to take part with all equipment provided and no experience is necessary

There will be giveaways at the club, including vouchers from sponsor Rebel Sport. All attendees can enter the major prize draw for the ultimate trip for two to the ASB Classic in Auckland in January 2023.

The Marlborough Tennis Association organises all interclub tennis in Marlborough and promotes the game of tennis throughout the region. The association forms part of the Canterbury region, together with Nelson and the West Coast.

The Brooklyn Croquet Club members held their collective breaths last weekend for a fine day at the weekend for the official opening day of the season.

And a lovely day it was albeit with quite a bit of wind. Marlborough's Mayor John Leggett attended and was given the honour of the first ball which he did well by going straight through the first hoop.

Brooklyn Club have recently purchased new hoops for the Club and this was the first outing for them also. Club member Joy Hayes, Anne Best and Mayor John Leggett getting ready to play the first ball.
