“Our community is extremely proud of RSE workers that are here, and understand the benefit they bring to Blenheim. We had a group of RSE workers in the supermarket last week and a random person called out at the checkout, and said ‘thanks so much for coming here to do our vineyard work’ and walked out.

“The employers of RSE workers have opened up over the years and shared how they fit within the fabric of our community.”

Her insights come after an investigation on TVNZ’s Sunday program (aired on Sunday, August 21) around allegations of RSE workers crowded in substandard accommodation in Blenheim.

So are the accommodation facilities adequate?

“INZ (Immigration New Zealand) set the RSE schemes standards and the regulation of those standards is currently carried out by the labour inspector. Every part of the scheme is tightly regulated.”

A new temporary visa and reporting tools came into force on July 1, 2021 set out to better protect migrants from exploitation. The changes are part of a wider government initiative to combat all forms of exploitation supported by $50m in funding over four years.

The new measures include: • A new visa to support migrants to leave exploitative situations quickly and remain lawfully in New Zealand. This visa will be valid for up to six months.

• A new dedicated 0800 number and web form to make it easier to report migrant worker exploitation.

Blenheim woman Margaret Anderson – a former UK Policewoman, who has worked – and volunteered for - a number of community organisations in this area recently went to register her car online at the Waka Kotahi website.

“I chose internet banking and was horrified to be asked for details of my bank, my log on number and my password! This was on the POLi site, which has recently become their only internet payment option for customers.

“I thought it was a scam, as I’ve been told many times never to give this information to anyone. Most recently that as in a talk from community constable Russell Smith at my retirement village.

“So I went to the local Automobile Association office and they phoned Waka Kotahi, who confirmed it was a legitimate – and the only - payment method on their website.

“But through the AA systems, I was able to pay by EFTPOS instead.

Though they had a bit of trouble, as my partially-completed POLi payment had locked my account.”

Margaret says that given Waka Kotahi is a Government department, and the public have been assured that as such they would never ask for this information, She asks: “Does it matter that this payment is being done through POLi, which is a contracted third party? And does Waka Kotahi have any responsibility if it goes wrong?”

Margaret’s done some research, and points out that while the POLi payment system is legitimate, it is wholly owned

She asks: “What is its relationship with Waka Kotahi, and with banks in New Zealand?

“If banks consider POLi as a third party, they can legitimately disclaim any responsibility if a transaction goes wrong, as the customer gave the information freely.

“Does Waka Kotahi also see it as third party, one they have no responsibility for, despite having it on their website?”

Margaret refers to recent stories in other media where airline payment problems went astray, and where both POLi and the airline have denied responsibility.

She’s investigated and says banks have different positions on this. “Some see it as giving the information freely so the bank is not liable for loss, while others advise you to change your password if given.

“One bank I spoke to said that

“I will not use this system and advise others not to as they could end up losing out on refunds from their bank.

Her advice is this: “At the very least, check with your bank first and get an assurance about recovering any losses in writing.

“I just can’t understand why they are using this system.”

Following the storm of August 15, the area’s State of Emergency was lifted at 4.30pm on Friday August 26. It was imposed after major damage to roads and properties in the area.

And for some property owners left dealing with severe damage, there is still a long haul ahead.

In signing the recovery transition notice that coincided with the lifting of the emergency, Mayor John Leggett said: “Today the response finishes and our recovery begins.”

Marlborough Emergency Management incident controller, Dean Heiford said this week that though the recovery from what was probably the biggest recovery in the region has begun, challenges remain, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds.

Northspur Premiere – a dream come true

A red carpet movie premiere in Blenheim tomorrow night is the culmination and definition of community and collaboration at its finest.

The making of Northspur is a story of passion, community and tenacity.

Northspur is an action drama set in a post-apocalyptic New Zealand and was shot entirely in the Marlborough region.

The top of the south team has managed to self-distribute their R16 film to 44 cinemas across the country while securing a deal with Lionsgate, a major US studio.

Blenheim Director Aaron Falvey first approached Nelson writer Justin Eade with the idea of writing a script in 2017.

Thirty-two drafts later, the film was shot in November 2019.

Since then there’s been a plethora of editing and a whole lot of work behind the scenes to get it into cinemas and to the United States. Northspur was shot on a micro budget of $160,000.

Aaron says tomorrow night is very special to him for a number of reasons.

“First and foremost, it’s a dream come true, one which has taken five years to come to fruition. I have always dreamed of making a feature, it’s one of the biggest challenges a filmmaker can undertake and we finally succeeded.

“Secondly, I’m so proud of the team who believed in the vision that Justin

and I presented. So many people donated and volunteered their time to help and without them it would not have been possible.”

Aaron says he’s appreciative of the investors who helped fund the film and says it simply would not have been the film it is without them.

The event is also a time of reflection for Aaron as his team remembers those they have lost including Marshall Napier, one of Northspur’s lead actors who died after a short battle with brain cancer. Northspur was his last film on the big screen.

“Also Pam Doig who let us take over her home in the Waihopai Valley for a couple of weeks. She lost her battle with Motor Neurone Disease last year. She was such a kind and generous human being.”

Aaron says the film also pays tribute to his best friend who passed away in 2016.

“George Anderson sadly passed away in a plane crash. He and I loved making films together as youngsters so I felt it pertinent to include George in the film.

I think what we did to include George was inventive and I hope that those who knew George see it in the film.”

Aaron says the red carpet event is booked out with all four main cinemas being used. The movie will run at Event Cinemas in Kinross Street, until the end of September.

From forensics lab to military police Hawke’s Bay’s Jess Kite was looking for opportunity and purpose when she joined the Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF).

The 25-year-old has now found exactly that as she begins her Military Police trade training after graduating the 14-week recruit training at RNZAF Base Woodbourne.

Aircraftman Kite gained a Bachelor of Applied Science majoring in Forensic Analytical Science and a minor in Genetics from Otago University but was not sure where that was going to take her.

“While studying I realised I didn’t want to be just confined to working in a lab environment and doing paperwork all day every day,” she said.

“I started looking at other career options that could still incorporate aspects of my degree subject area.

“What the Air Force could offer in terms of the Military Police role was really appealing and the opportunity to grow within the New Zealand Defence Force seems endless,” Aircraftman Kite said.

The Military Police’s job is to protect the Defence Force’s people and resources from crime and keep sailors, soldiers and aviators safe in New Zealand and overseas.

Aircraftman Kite said she was looking forward to continuing to learn and develop her skills in her upcoming trade training at Trentham Military Camp.

“I am looking forward to taking advantage of opportunities as they arise, gain experience that goes with it and hopefully get a chance to do a bit of travelling, whether it’s on exercise, operations or training with services.”

She said one of the highlights of the recruit course was honing new skills at Marlborough’s Dip Flat training area, and that while there were challenges, there were always ways to manage them.

Marlborough moves into recovery While life has returned to normal for many in the Marlborough region, for those communities still isolated, or for property owners left dealing with the severe damage, there is still a long haul ahead.

The State of Emergency declaration lifted at 4.30pm on Friday 26 August to coincide with the transition to recovery stage.

In signing the recovery transition notice Marlborough Mayor John Leggett said it was a crucial step as the region begins to recover.

“It has been a big couple of weeks for Marlborough in terms of the response to the recent weather event.

I want to acknowledge everyone who has been involved,” Mayor Leggett said.

“The recovery is going to be a long haul. It will be complex, and it will require input from several key agencies

at a local and national level. We know many of our local roads, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds, will be inaccessible or affected for some time to come.”

“Rest assured we will do all we can to get our communities connected again as quickly as possible, but it is going to take time. And there will need to be some big decisions made about roading in our region on this journey,” Mayor Leggett said.

Recovery Manager, Dean Heiford, says this will likely be the biggest recovery ever faced in the region.

“Recovery agencies will continue to work to assess, repair and clear local roads to enable access in and out of affected communities. This will take some time as access challenges remain in parts of the region, particularly in the Marlborough Sounds,” Mr Heiford said.

Mayoral Relief Fund Marlborough Mayor John Leggett has established a Mayoral Relief Fund to assist the region in its recovery effort following the recent weather event.

The fund will be primarily available to Marlborough District Council area residents who have suffered personal financial or emotional hardship because of the August 2022 Marlborough rain event.

People wishing to donate to this fund can do so via online banking. Simply add the Marlborough District Council’s account number: 02-0600-0202861-00 and include ‘Mayoral Fund’ as a reference.

The Mayoral Relief Fund has been approved as a donee organisation, meaning donations are tax deductible.

Subsidy for Sounds’ water taxis established Marlborough District Council, with funding support, will subsidise water taxi services for residents, workers and visitors to areas in the Marlborough Sounds that were previously accessible by road.

Port Marlborough has also announced that they will assist the community with free car parking and free twohour visitor berthing in the Havelock and Picton Marinas until the end of September.

Recovery Manager, Dean Heiford, said he was pleased to be able to extend the subsidy to help the areas affected.

There is a possibility the services could be expanded once more of an understanding of the resources available and demands are known.

“The subsidy is $25 per passenger per trip for scheduled and pre-booked services. Bookings can be made directly with water taxi service providers and also through the Marlborough i-SITE,

which is open 7 days, or by calling 0800 777 181, or by visiting their website: https://marlboroughnz.com/ AugustWeatherTransport/,” Mr Heiford said.

In addition to the per passenger subsidy, Marlborough District Council will also subsidise 50 per cent of each grocery and essential supplies delivery cost to those residents who can no longer travel by road.

“We will continually review the demand and services in order to meet the needs of the community as best as we can,” Mr Heiford said.

“I encourage residents to coordinate travel times, if possible, to make water taxi trips as efficient as possible. Please be mindful there will be some niggles as we introduce these services, so bear with us as our teams do their best to assist our communities,” he said.

The water taxi subsidy is separate to the barge service subsidy.

Doing it for Angeline and wahine Integrative nutrition and health coach, and mother of two boys Angeline Furlong opens up with Chris Valli to talk about her postnatal depression and what it means to ask for help and support.

Angeline Furlong recalls when her second child was five months old her husband pushed her to see a counsellor.

After he googled PND (postnatal depression) support in Blenheim he found PND Marlborough Trust which is now called Maternal Mental Wellbeing Marlborough (MMWM).

MMWM Charitable Trust is a not for profit orgainsation that provides a dedicated focus to reduce the impacts of emotional and mental health problems experienced by mothers, fathers, infants and families.

They have been active in Marlborough since 2005 running antenatal and postnatal therapy support groups helping over 500 women and families since the trust began.

Angeline says she went to group therapy for mothers with PND, and had private counselling and went to anger management.

It was during this period she found a connection to her diet and her overall holistic well-being.

“I focused heavily on nutrition when I discovered a strong link to my mental health. In group therapy I re-learned what motherhood was about, realigned my priorities (mainly by actually adding myself to the priority list) and learned about holistic wellness.”

“In anger management I learned to accept that some things in life that I resisted and resented were simply doing things the way they were meant to. Like when babies cry or don’t sleep - well that’s just what babies do.

It sounds simple but when applied to things that were triggering anger I was able to choose to accept or change what I could within myself in order to be okay with it.”

The 31-year-old says her husband played a huge role in her journey and subsequent recovery.

“He never judged me or criticised me, even though my behaviour really upset him. He treated me like I was unwell

and did what he could to help me get well again. He didn’t dismiss the mental illness as if it wasn’t just as serious as a physical illness. Most importantly, he encouraged me. “ Angeline says her husband would often write her a big page of encouraging quotes when she was diagnosed and bible verses that gave her hope.

“I remember one of them was simply “you will get better”. His hope carried me when I lacked hope. He just never gave up on me even when I was at my ugliest - he would respond with total love and kindness. That’s unconditional love

and I adore him for that.”

Angeline suggests to the blokes and men within Marlborough to take on the responsibility of educating themselves on what a mother goes through physically, mentally, spiritually and relationally.

“Pregnancy and birth will literally rewire a woman’s entire being.

You are experiencing change too but it is incredibly intense for a woman. Expect to be patient with her while she navigates these changes and expect that she will be a more evolved version of who she was before pregnancy. Let her know that you support and love the

She acknowledges so many women hold onto what they were like before and assume that their partner wants them to go back to that.

“Let her know you support all the changes to come or that have already happened. Then tell her again and again (we women can take some time to believe it).”

Studies have shown the nature of the bonding between the mother and infant influences childhood neurodevelopment.

Data shows one in three women will experience some sort or pre or post-natal mood disorder, obsessive

compulsive disorder (OCD), anxiety and even psychosis.

Suicide is the number one killer of new mothers and pregnant woman in New Zealand.

Angeline says it is terrifying as it is preventable with more support and education for families and society as a whole.

“This is not a women’s issue. This is a human issue and we all need to be active.”

I like the people more than the game

89 year-old Christine Hipkins, is looking forward to turning 90 this weekend and with good reason. Originally from Wellington, Christine is a founding member of the Rarangi Golf Club which was founded in 1957.

Christine, who now resides at the Springlands Lifestyle Village, says her birthday celebrations this weekend will be a chance to catch up with like-minded people and reflect on those pioneers who transferred a virtual wilderness into what it is today, a first class 18-hole golf course by the sea.

Christine says it was one Bernie Hipkins who was one such visionary behind the Beach Road golf club. She says in the

mid 1950’s when the Fairhall course was closed, Bernie wanted somewhere new and exciting to play his games.

In 1957 land was purchased for the current location while in 1959 one Mr George Aston supplied ‘many lengths of pipe’ to extract water - a failed effort as pipes choked with pea gravel. Subsequently, four wells were dug and lined with concrete cylinders and produced a ‘satisfactory’ water supply.

Christine says Bernie was told by a golfing enthusiast that the best links were by the sea, look at Scotland, look at England, she says he was often told.

The very first Rarangi Golf Club working bee was in 1957 with 10 ‘keen’ locals.

Along with late husband John she went down one lunchtime as Chrisitne had a

boy who was two-years old at the time and she had to get someone to look after him.

“Like all golfers we ran late getting home and I was upset. The poor lady who looked after him didn’t know whether to get him his tea or not…I felt that bad.”

Christine says she wasn’t much of a golfing fan until she had her second child when she started going to the club and began to mix and mingle with a wide variety of people who she says had very interesting stories and backgrounds.

“It’s the people. They’ll always tell you their story and how they arrived in Blenheim and or who they are related to. I went to Picton to get a handicap because everybody I played with said to me, ‘what’s your handicap?’ When I started as a lady golfer I didn’t have one.

In those days, she says, it was harder to get a handicap as you had to get five cards in and play under 36.

Husband John died eight years ago or as she says, in his ‘89th year. She truly believes her late husband did more work for the club than her, adding she was often in the background.

Christine says she feels somewhat humbled by all the fuss about being one of the remaining honorary members.

“What have I done? I am blown away by it all.”

Fellow club member Margaret McLeod says Christine has done and seen it all at the club including being president, patron, in the kitchen, she’s done everything.

“We love her dearly out there, we really do.”

Marlborough Tree Care (MTC) owner Matt White isn’t a stranger to hard work and neither is his team.

But Matt believes the generations are changing now and overall he feels the drive to work is decreasing to pivot towards the quest of finding work life balance. Which has now become a priority to the MTC team.

Tree work demands busy schedules, physically hard work and

I agree with Joy Moseley about the wheelie bins for rubbish green waste and recycling.

They used it in Taranki and it was great. No litter and rubbish on the streets. No animals ripping the bags. Please give it a try.

I observed the same tack by current owner with visitors to town. Basically sign this petition or no entry. As a local it was embarrassing overhearing it.

How can this council pass a law of not allowing any resident to have a brazier going at night in the winter when in spring the pine pollen being blown through the air affecting people with hayfever. One would sooner keep warm than having to breathe pollen when outside.

Surprise, surprise Three of NZ’s electricity companies have recorded disgustingly high record profits following regular annual (obviously unnecessary) price increases.

Let’s hope 2024 will see a new caring Government elected who will introduce sensible electricity price controls to prohibit such reprehensibly high profits. Thereby easing the plight of many, many low income households who are hurting horrendously in today’s Kiwi economic climate.

1. Is it realistic and fair for us to expect children to be cell free at school, when all they see in everyday life is mom and dad on phones all day?

gardening this week Germinating seeds: By Wally Richards There are two basic places to germinate seeds, one is where they will ultimately grow and mature the other is in suitable containers to germinate and then to transplant out into open ground or larger containers later on.

Firstly it is always best to plant any seed in the spot where it will grow and mature.

The reason for this is because when a seed germinates it will send down a tap root and if in open ground in a friable soil that root can be very long.

If on the other hand we germinate in a container or seedling tray that root will be limited in the depth of the tray and growing medium.

It is not practical to grow every thing at the maturity site, especially when we are getting an early start or growing out of season.

There are some seed types which should only be grown in their maturity site and only planted when conditions are favorable.

I often see seedlings for sale in punnets of plants which should never be offered this way because novice gardeners may purchase and have poor results.

The worst example of this is root crops such as carrots and parsnips which should only be direct sown as in any other form they will not produce a normal root.

An exception to this is a carrot that is round in shape and does not produce a long edible root.

Beetroot and onions are seedlings that will transplant but are better to direct sow.

Spring onion is an exception.

Silverbeet, corn, beans and peas should all be direct sown and you will get far better crops if you do so.

Larger seeds are easy to handle and can be placed where you want them to grow without having to thin out later on.

If you want to direct sow seeds early in open ground try this method.

Make a trench about 100mm deep and the same wide, mow your lawn and collect the clippings which you then pack fresh into the bottom of your trench.

Pack firmly to about 80mm then sprinkle a little compost over the clippings to cover.

Next sprinkle Wallys Calcium and Health or garden lime and Wallys Unlocking Your Soil along the trench along with foods such as chook manure, sheep manure pellets, blood & bone, Bio Boost and Neem Tree Powder.

Once again cover lightly with weed free compost.

Next sow your seeds such as peas, beans, sweet corn etc.

Once the seeds are spaced out along the row then spray them with Magic Botanic Liquid (MBL) at 20 mls per litre. This really speeds up germination.

Then cover the seeds with more compost and water down using a fine rose watering can with MBL added.

For those that have problems with either cats, birds or late frosts then make some hoops out of No8 wire and place them along the row with a clearance of about 200mm in the middle of the row.

Place crop cover over the hoops and on one side cover with soil and on the other side with lengths of old timber or similar.

That allows you to easily take off to tend to the plants if needed. The heat from the grass clippings will warm the soil which greatly helps germination.

Once well developed then you can remove the hoops and cover and store for future use.

Now let’s look at doing similar but in seedling trays or by using cell packs or punnets.

To fill I use only purchased compost of high quality such as from Daltons or Oderings.

I have found that seed raising mixes are a gimmick and most of the ones I have looked at are too expensive and do not work as well as a good quality compost for most seed germination projects.

Think about this; outside in Nature we find all sorts of soil types even straight gravel or sand where seeds do not appear to have much trouble germinating, without any special mixes from mankind.

One important aspect to consider when germinating in seedling trays is to have heat from a heat pad.

Some garden shops, pet supplies and brew shops have heat pads which can be used for germination.

I place a sheet of polystyrene block on a bench to direct the heat upwards then sit the seed trays on the heat pad.

If you go to wholesale fish outlets or fish departments of supermarkets you will likely find used polystyrene trays free or for a few dollars.

You can sit your heat pad in the tray and being white it will provide lots of good reflected light.

If the pad you buy is a higher temperature than you require then cover the pad with sand and keep the sand moist. Sit your seedling trays on the sand.

Fill your seedling tray or cell packs to about two thirds full with purchased compost as above.

Carefully sprinkle a few seeds over the compost keeping them apart so they each have their own space.

Spray seeds with MBL and Mycorrcin mixed together in a trigger sprayer with non chlorinated water.

Once the compost and seeds are wet then cover seeds with more compost and wet down with your spray.

Spray the tray at least twice a day to keep the compost moist using the same trigger mix.

Once a few seeds have germinated and before they start stretching for light get them out into natural light from overhead such as on a bench in a glasshouse.

If you do not have a suitable place then place your polystyrene box outside with a sheet of glass over it.

The seedlings will need spraying still but off the heat pad a lot less. Make sure the seedlings are in good light but not strong sun light to burn them.

If you are worried about them at night you can bring the polystyrene box inside or onto a porch.

When the seedlings are big enough to handle prick them out and pot them into small pots once again using the compost, or plant out in your garden.

If you spray the seedlings a couple of days before planting out then you do not need to harden them off.

Te Hoiere Pelorus Project Community Trustee The Te Hoiere Pelorus River catchment is a special place.

As a result, the Te Hoiere Pelorus Project is an exemplar freshwater improvement initiative project which has been chosen by the Kotahitanga mo te Taiao, an alliance of Councils, Iwi, and the Department of Conservation (DOC) who share the Kaupapa of working together on landscape-scale conservation.

Marlborough District Council, DOC, Ngati Kuia and the wider community are coming together in an ambitious approach to look after the whole catchment from the mountains to the sea (ki uta ki tai).

The Governance Group now seek expressions of interest from residents of Te Hoiere (Rai Valley, Canvastown, Havelock, Pelorus Sound, Kaituna and Linkwater) for two Community Trustees.

Ideally, the trustees will have an interest in either farming, forestry, or the environment.

Governance experience is desirable; however, training will be provided. As a Community Trustee you will part of the Governance Group having direct input into the strategy of the project going forward.

This role requires someone with: • An ability to see the bigger picture and make balanced decisions on behalf of all stakeholders.

• An ability to deliver financial stewardship to the project.

• Knowledge of working with Government Departments.

• Excellent interpersonal skills and must be a team player.

• An appreciation of Matauranga Maori values, including Te Reo me ona Tikanga Maori of Ngati Kuia and Rangitane o Wairau is desirable.

• A willingness to learn.

• Time to commit to at least one Governance meeting per month, plus associated tasks.

This is a voluntary role for a 3-year term.

This includes looking after the supporting maritime safety needs, infrastructure, and compliance needs for these areas.

The Nautical and Coastal Team are looking for people with a passion for promoting boating and water safety to join our team as Harbour Patrol Crewmembers (Casual). The purpose of this role is to enhance and maintain maritime safety in the Marlborough region. This is achieved through engaging with harbour users (on and off the water) and disseminating safe boating education, best practices, and advice regarding compliance.

Some of the Harbour Patrol Crew’s responsibilities include: • Assist with the promotion of safe boating behaviour in the Marlborough Sounds.

• Encourage compliance of harbour users with the local navigation bylaws.

• Assist in supporting water safety education and promotional programmes.

• Assist in gathering information on incidents and accidents on the water and act as a first responder in maritime emergencies.

We are also looking for a Harbour Patrol Skipper (Casual) to join our team. This role will be responsible for the safety of the crew and the safe navigation of the boat whilst on the water.

Ko ngā pūmanawa ōu | About you You will be able to demonstrate safe and competent boat handling skills. You will be physically fit and ready to work in isolated and remote environments when required.

Your skills and experience will be matched by your ability to remain level-headed during emergencies. You will have excellent interpersonal skills and will be effective in addressing matters of maritime safety on a boat, at the boat ramp, or on the wharf. You will also foster the energy and enthusiasm of a small but highly capable team.

Ideally, all our Harbour Patrol Crewmembers will hold a Skipper Restricted Limits (SRL) certificate (but this is not essential). This qualification is however a minimum requirement for all our Harbour Patrol Skippers.

Most importantly you to have a willingness to develop/maintain a high standard of seamanship, an interest in NZ maritime rules and regulations, and an awareness of Marlborough Navigation Bylaws.

Just where the former Warriors captain’s rugby career is going must be questioned as he again missed out on the 23-man All Blacks squad which lost in embarrassing but increasingly common fashion to Argentina in Christchurch on Saturday night.

RTS, still in his first season of rugby having switched codes to take-up a seven-figure contract with the Blues and New Zealand Rugby.

Up until the Super Rugby final, the 29-year-old midfielder had a solid but unspectacular debut season.

He did not manage a statement performance but did not do much wrong at the same time.

The large contract almost demanded he be given an All Blacks jersey and he was, of course, selected.

However, that selection was made prior to the Super Rugby final

where the Crusaders ruthlessly exposed the Blues in all facets and RTS was subbed-off early in the second half.

One has to wonder if all involved, both RTS and the NZR are starting to feel a little sheepish about the situation.

RTS was seen as an integral part of the plans for next year’s World Cup, in a position where the All Blacks lack depth.

It’s early days but the RTS code-

switch is starting to feel more like Benji Marshall’s attempt than Sonny Bill Williams’ smooth transition to the game.

If the former Warriors fullback can’t make the team in a home test against Argentina, then just where and how can he force his way into being a serious contributor in the World Cup? RTS had the skills to be a schoolboy rugby star so he must surely still have the instincts capable of

making an impact at the highest level.

NZR certainly are not getting the return on the investment they had hoped for at this stage.

Can the Blues unlock the potential? Because that is where he will likely get the most game time.

Ian Foster and co cannot use test match rugby to get a 29-year-old up-to-speed.

Just how RTS can announce himself in a big way remains to be seen.

Netball will be the winner

Janine Craven Jordan loves her two daughters unconditionally.

She also loves the game of netball.

This weekend provides somewhat of a conundrum as she will come up against her oldest daughter Zoe, 16, who plays for Pelorus Elite and plays goal shoot. Mum, Janine plays for the Pelorus Netball club in the Revival Café Team and her position is goal shoot.

Youngest daughter Tessa also plays for Pelorus Liquid Action team and plays goal attack or defence.

“It is fun to train with them and Saturdays are our bonding days, all three supporting each other,” Janine says.

Janine has played netball since

arriving in New Zealand from South Africa 16 years ago. After a second ankle reconstruction a specialist advised her to stop playing. She says she hasn’t played a full season since 2016.

She says after a healthier lifestyle including some weight loss in 2017, she had a new lease of life and then some. However in 2020 she had a health scare and decided it was time to make a change.

“Here I am almost two years later, healthier, fitter and very grateful and blessed.”

So what does it mean to be playing her daughter in this weekend’s final?

“Having children came later in life for me. So to be able to still play netball and do it with my girls is a dream I never thought

could happen but here we are playing a sport all three of us love.

“Both Zoë’s team and my team are in the same grade and it so happens that our teams are competing in finals this weekend.”

Janine sees an ideal outcome would be her team winning seeing that they have the experience in their team, but insists it will be a good game either way.

“Zoe has had an amazing year with her team and I wish them well. The one positive is that it will be a Pelorus team that will win the Grade 2 final either way. I know it will be a busy day - playing, then umpiring and coaching the premiership final.”

The Marlborough Netball Centre 2022 finals day will be played this Saturday, September 3 at Stadium 2000 from 9:30am.
