By Damian George New Zealand fire service chief executive Peter Dempsey wants the harshest possible punishment dished out to a mob of attackers who ambushed four volunteer firefighters in Havelock on Sunday morning. The volunteers were called out to what they thought was a car crash early in the morning, before being caught up in an attack which saw one man kicked in the head. “I think the police and the courts should take the strongest action possible under the law, Mr Dempsey says. “Our concern here is that these people trying to

go about doing their job looking after the community have come under this sort of attack. Mr Dempsey says the incident will likely have implications for the stunned firefighters involved, who may be apprehensive about further callouts. “I should imagine that will be in the back of their minds when they’re called out to do a job – ‘is there more around the corner than what we’ve been led to believe?’ “That’s a natural reaction. It will obviously take a little bit of time to get over. The fire service offers a variety of support systems for firefighters after a particularly disturbing

incident, such as a nasty injury or fatality, Mr Dempsey says. “Those services are in place but the word from the Havelock brigade is they’ve got it under control and haven’t needed to utilise those facilities yet. He says, on the positive side, this incident is one out of the blue, and it is not a common thing for “our guys to come under this sort of attack. Three people have been arrested in relation to the incident, on charges of disorderly behaviour, and will appear in Blenheim district court next Tuesday. Constable Michelle Stagg says further charges are likely once enquiries have been completed.

Picton’s iconic Railsail attraction is in danger of being confined to the history books as volunteer numbers dwindle. The 41-year-old attraction has survived on the services of local volunteers who have provided the facility with train drivers and station workers. But with time catching up on the current crop, Railsail is calling out for some new blood to keep the operation going. A Railsail spokesperson says driving the electric engine or running the station is not an onerous task, and can be quickly learnt by anybody. The attraction celebrates its 41st birthday on Sunday, and Railsail says it would be a sad day if it was the last.

NZ first for Derry By Damian George Local man John Derry has driven New Zealand’s only turbine-powered jet boat to victory in the 2010 New Zealand jet boat marathon. The boat, named after its sponsor “Mother, is the first of its kind to win the marathon, reaching speeds of up to 139 miles per hour (230km). The team of John, Brent Hefford, Glenn Bateman, Pete Connelly, and Murray Baker, finished in a time of 3 hours, 34 minutes, 53 seconds over the six day event, which finished in Greymouth on Saturday. With a turbine-powered boat never having finished a jet boat marathon in NZ until now. Derry says the ground-breaking victory has the potential to turn the sport on its head. “There were a lot of people waiting to see if this boat would finish, and finish well, so it was certainly a point for us to prove that it can be done. “There’s about two or three people in New Zealand who own the parts to build these boats – now they’ll probably start putting them together. Hefford, John’s navigator, says they were surprised to learn they had clocked 139mph on the lower Greymouth river. “It didn’t really seem that fast. I said to John ‘do you think we’ve gone any faster than we have all week?’ “We saw the speed and we thought ‘no, that’s wrong’. “Once it’s up and going, the speed doesn’t feel that fast, it’s the initial acceleration that really hits you. John’s wife, Hayley, says the achievement is just reward. “He’s worked incredibly hard to get to this point. “They set out to revolutionize the sport, and make a more reliable engine, and I’m very proud of him. Another Blenheim pair, driver Bryce Idiens and

Christchurch jolted again A magnitude 5.0 earthquake hit Christchurch yesterday morning, causing power cuts and sparking evacuations. It struck 10 kilometres south-west of

Christchurch at a depth of 9km, GNS science says. A GNS spokesperson says Christchurch residents would have felt the quake more strongly as it was a lot closer

to the city than previous aftershocks. Ten thousand customers in the CBD, Heathcote and Sockburn were without power for 15 minutes following the quake.

Rally to challenge 90-day bill “You are trusted and valued in your community, why should it be different at work? Local woman Moira Conroy has been stamping this message around Blenheim during the past month and has organised a public rally for today. Moira is speaking out against the two new bills introduced to Parliament in August this

year which could drastically change employment law in New Zealand. If passed, Moira believes proposed changes to holiday and sick leave as well as the extension of the 90-day ‘fire-at-will’ law to all employers will take away the rights of employees around the country. “If passed the changes will

take away workers rights, remove protections, cut pay, reduce holidays and diminish access to sick leave, she says. Today’s rally will include speeches and time to ask questions and is being held from 12 – 1pm at the Riverside Park by the Raupo Riverside CafÊ & Restaurant.

Boer War Memorial Service A wreath will be laid at Marlborough’s memorial at Tua Marina cemetery at 10 am on Thursday, October 21, to commemorate the departure of the first troops to leave our shores for the Boer War and to remember the eleven Marlborough casualties of that conflict. New Zealand was the first of the British colonies to send troops and the first Marlborough soldiers arrived in South Africa less than three weeks after war

was declared. The first contingent of Blenheim Mounted Rifles left for camp, en route to South Africa, on October 10 1899 led by Lieutenant D’arcy Chaytor, son of the Marlborough military family who farmed the family estate at Marshlands. His elder brother Lieutenant Edward Chaytor also served in South Africa, leading the North Island Company of the Third (Rough Riders) Contingent. During the course of the

conf lict, the Marlborough Mounted Rifles sent sixty men with the various New Zealand contingents to South Africa. Marlborough RSA president Geoff Stobie and Squadron Leader Mike Baker will lead the service to be held at the memorial to the South African war, at the cemetery. Marlborough Boys’ College will be represented by a group of students, with College principal Wayne Hegarty delivering the address.

Goodbye Local woman Maggie McNulty was fondly farewelled from The Factory Shop in Blenheim when she retired last Wednesday. Shop owner Mae Walker pictured with sales assistant Wendy Joy says despite Maggie having only been with The Factory Shop for six and a half years, she has already been sadly missed.

“The customers just love Maggie and many of them have already been in to wish her well, she has been a valued part of our team, Mae says.

Her plans for retirement? “A bit of travelling, spending time with the grandkids and relaxing, Maggie smiles.

Hospital benefits from Cookbook Twelve months have elapsed since the launch of the cook book ‘A Cook’s Calendar’ which is a fundraiser for Cancer Society Marlborough, to support local people affected by cancer. Over $40,000 has been raised and funding has already been given for additional training for oncology (cancer) nurses at Wairau Hospital and for the training of a lymphodoema support nurse. Most of the recipes were created and compiled by Hotel d’Urville chef Maree Connolly with contributions by local chefs and cooks. The book was created by a team who gave of their time and expertise and the project continues to be well supported by local businesses. A Cook’s Calendar celebrates the wonderful food of Marlborough and provides month by month recipes using local produce. The book has proved to be a popular gift, both locally and overseas. It is on sale in a number of Marlborough wineries and is proving very popular with tourists who recognise good value in this compact and colourful souvenir of our region. With Christmas approaching and overseas posting dates soon upon us, the Cancer Society is launching a spring initiative to boost book sales. Perry’s book shop is assisting the cause with a colourful window display which also promotes Relay for Life, a two yearly fund raiser for Cancer Society Marlborough, due to be held in March 2011. The Cancer Society receives no government funding so depends entirely on fund raising to continue to provide support and services for people with cancer and their families. A Cook’s Calendar is also stocked locally by Blenheim Book World, Hotel d’Urville, Thomas’s, Alpha and Omega Essential Asian Ingredients, Figaro’s, Makana Confections, Meaters of Marlborough, Cancer Society and the Farmers Market with no gain there.

A brief history: Muller Street

With Mark Stevenson First National

Muller Road is named after Dr Stephen Muller, the medical doctor who was Blenheim’s first resident magistrate and postmaster from 18571878. He was also a member of the Nelson Provincial Council. Dr Muller arrived in Nelson in 1850 as surgeon on the immigrant sailing ship Pekin, where he met Mary Ann Griffith, a widow with two small children. They married in December 1851 and arrived in The Beaver in 1857. He owned the famous Upper Awatere Valley high country station, The Muller, from 1851 to 1864. He was a keen amateur meteorologist and the term a “Dr Muller Frost is still used. He had observed that a common frost here often caught flowers and fruit after they had set in early Spring. Mary Ann Muller was a notable woman in her own right. She was a teacher and a very early

feminist, thirty years before votes for women became a major issue. Through her husband’s job, she came to know many of the influential politicians of the day and frequently discussed and lobbied for women’s rights with them. Most were sympathetic but sadly, it is reported that her husband was strongly disapproving. Because of his position she worked in secrecy. Her writing was read widely in New Zealand and abroad under the name “Femina . Although New Zealand history now allocates more column centimetres to Mary Anne Muller than her husband, it is after him that Muller Road is named.

Skin deep Tattoo artist trades world travel for Picton Shaun Buttling

“

I have always been pretty confident with my artwork and I have spent every minute trying to better myself and exploring new things. This has led me to work with many talented tattoo artists all over the world

talks to Celeste Lodewyk

N

news2@blenheimsun.co.nz

Not many people can boast of being able to travel the world tattooing alongside big names in the industry and going on tour with bands such as Slayer, Biohazard and Korn. For Picton’s Koru Tattoo owner and artist Shaun Buttling, this has been a dream come true. After 17-years of travelling the world as a tattoo artist Shaun returned to New Zealand searching for an ideal location to open a new business. He found Picton. Walking into Koru Tattoo on Wellington Street in Picton, I find myself surrounded by an expression of artistic culture and heritage. What makes this more special is that it is Picton’s first ever tattoo business, Shaun says. The inside dĂŠcor is painted in stylish but mellow tones with numerous pieces of Maori, Japanese and antique artworks hung on the walls. What strikes me instantly is the absence of tattoo designs pictured all around the walls. But as Shaun informs me, it is because he specializes in custom designs. Stooped over a freshly tattooed arm, Shaun applies the finishing touches to customer Al Turner’s colourful ‘arm sleeve’ as he shares his worldwide experiences throughout his career as a tattoo artist. Clearly impressed with his tattoo, Al says it was word of mouth and Shaun’s good reputation which brought him to Koru Tattoo. “He’s an awesome person with incredible artistic talent. The best part about Shaun is that you can give him an idea and then let him loose,â€? he laughs. Originally from the North Shore of Auckland, Shaun grew up with a natural love for art. This developed into mostly free-hand designs before beginning an apprenticeship in England 16-years ago. “I have always been pretty confident with my artwork and I have spent every minute trying to better myself and exploring new things. This has led me to work with many talented tattoo artists all over the world,â€? he says. Up until five months ago when Shaun opened Koru Tattoo he had worked mostly throughout Europe and more recently in Queensland, Australia where he owned the ‘Pimp My Hide’ tattoo studio. While he was there he also completed a nursing degree for the purpose of maintaining a clean and sterile environment, a qualification required there by law. “Even though it’s not compulsory to have these qualifications as a tattoo artist in New Zealand, it’s still important to

me and to my customers who trust me to provide a sterile environment, he says. The different people and cultures Shaun has encountered along way have been the inspiration behind his work, including the Maori heritage which he says features largely in his art. “Tattooing is more accepted nowadays as an art form rather than something negative. “Tattooing isn’t about tracing stencils anymore, it’s about creating art. And not just any art – people come to me with an idea which has special meaning to them. I research and

spend time preparing a custom design for each individual person, this is how I define my work, he says. With a fantastic response from the Picton community, Shaun says he is here to stay. But in the quieter months he plans to return to California next year on a job invite to Los Angeles. In his place will be well renowned Picton and NZ artist Scott Hawthorne who is currently carrying out his apprenticeship under Shaun’s watchful eye. Scott says if anyone can help him become a great tattooist, it is Shaun.

No bull in breeding seminars Breed values, indices and traits are phrases that can make even the most passionate dairy farmer put the whole issue of breeding into the “too hard basket, or simply reach for bull of the day when mating comes around. Nita Harding, General Manager of the Dairy Women’s Network, says the organisation’s upcoming Dairy Days seminars, “aim to take the mystery out of breeding, providing dairy farmers with the opportunity to have the value and returns from good breeding decisions explained. This workshop in Blenheim on Tuesday 9 November at the Admirals Lodge, will be

a great opportunity to ask questions without feeling like you need to be a geneticist to understand the answer. The nationwide Dairy Days seminars will be led by CRV AmBreed’s marketing manager, Peter Berney. He is a passionate advocate for taking the mysteries out of an area with the potential to be the most sustainable means of production growth in any dairy herd. “When you think of spending money on something like urea, you will get one burst and then need to look at the next application. Spending money wisely on good genetics can deliver returns that flow through the

herd for years afterwards, and can ultimately save money by generating stock that are more efficient converters of feed into milk solids, he says. The seminars include a breeding plan for every farmer’s herd, helping them to identify gaps in their herd’s performance that breeding can help fill. Issues within herds may include fertility problems, calving issues or milk solid ratios that can be addressed over time by better understanding bull traits and heritability. Peter Berney is also keen to dispel the “one size fits all approach to breeding, urging farmers to consider their

unique herd situation in terms of feed levels, stocking rates and farm intensity. “The genetic requirements for a herd run under a high input system with high per head production will be significantly different to an all grass, average stocking rate operation. There is no silver bullet solution lying with any one bull, and for many farmers targeting individual cows with specific bulls may simply be impractical. Discussion at the Dairy Days will include practical steps to tailor particular genetics to particular cow groups within the herd, aiming to fix the “holes within those groups.

Pest control programme for Rotoiti area A joint Government Green Party pilot pest control project could soon be rolled out at the Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project. The Department of Conservation (DOC) is to test a new kind of trap for possums, stoats, and rats which, if successful, will reduce the costs of pest control and the reliance on poisons. The Rotoiti Nature Recovery Project is one of four sites shortlisted for the trial. “This is a big step forward in the search for new ways to control pests and protect the native species that we all love, says Green Party Conservation spokesperson Kevin Hague. The conservation initiative will be the first large scale test of new traps that can re-set themselves. Currently, a big part of

4HE .%7

the cost of pest control around New Zealand is the need to regularly visit traps. DOC plans to purchase approximately 10,000 of the new style traps which can kill up to 12 pests between visits by landowners, trappers or volunteers. Mr Hague says if the self-resetting traps were shown to work, they could be used in locations where aerial poisoning currently takes place. “We’re hopeful that this will be a way to control pests like possums with less use of poisons. We all want practical alternatives to 1080 drops and the Government’s funding support for this trial is really welcome. The $4 million of funding will be spread over the next three years with the first traps deployed in the summer of 2011/2012.

Pizza bread makes 50,000th meal at John’s Kitchen Who would have thought that a simple breakfast of pizza bread and coffee could generate a celebration? This was the case yesterday morning when John’s Kitchen reached a significant milestone in 10-years of operation – their 50,000th meal. Blenheim man Nigel Williamson, left, was surprised by kitchen manager Sharon

Babies remembered By Celeste Lodewyk Last Friday a public remembrance service was held at the Cloudy Bay Riverside Chapel for families to commemorate the memories of their stillborn babies. This year was the largest attended service in the five-years it has been running. Families were encouraged to take along an item in memory of their babies which was later followed by a balloon release.

Sands member and spokesperson Anna Simpson says it is a much needed remembrance service in the community. “The message was to all our babies, we remember you, we miss you and most of all we love you. “I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Cloudy Bay and Julie Marshall of the Blenheim Salvation Army for hosting and taking such a special and meaningful service for Marlborough families, she says.

Akurangi who presented him with a gift basket to mark the occasion. “I had no idea that my breakfast was such an important event, Nigel laughs. “I have been coming to John’s Kitchen for around a year and they have been such friendly and caring people. Providing free meals for needy Blenheim families,

John’s Kitchen operates a koha cafÊ serving free soup and a roll each weekday, as well as an evening dinner each Wednesday, from it’s base at Crossroads, 2 Redwood St. In the first year of operation around 3000 meals were served, but worsening economic conditions have meant that so far this year close to 11,000 meals have already been served.

Four-years ago, a local family purchased Tresco House on Eltham Road in central Blenheim and set it up as a Bed and Breakfast establishment. The seven bedroom home situated on 1800 square meters has recently been converted to an assisted living home for the elderly. Assistant manager Gillian McLeod whose family owns Tresco House says after spending the past year researching new uses for

the house, the need for retirement living stood out the most. “Tresco House has so many spacious rooms and a lovely warm environment that we thought it would suit the needs of the elderly well. “After all the research that was done we have been blown away by the need for assisted living in the community. People have really welcomed and embraced the idea so we went for it, she says. Tresco House offers an alternative for people not coping on their

Home and business burglaries cost thousands of dollars every year. The installation of a security system could potentially prevent a break-in or cause the burglar to stay a shorter time. This is where Marlborough Electronics Security Specialists can help. Locally owned and operated, John Crampton has owned the business for more that 25-years, servicing the community throughout the whole of Marlborough. Being local means that customers can expect personalised service with the added advantage of a backup service. Each security system is programmed to each individual requirement and has up to 1500 software switches to allow the system to be configured to meet almost any requirement, John says. Not only does Marlborough Electronics Security Specialists install security and CCTV systems, but they are also embarking on the trial of a medical call system. John has discovered the Medivox medical call alarm system which he says is designed by the same company who has made his security systems for many years. The reason John is excited about this product is because of its’ ability to connect straight to the phone line. “The way it has been designed, the connection puts the alarm system before the phone so if the phone is accidentally knocked or the phone is left off the cradle, it is still fully operational, he says. There are many different ways this medical alarm system can be programmed, he says. “It can be connected to smoke detectors, activity sensors so if it hasn’t detected someone walking around the house in a certain time frame, it sends a call out accordingly. “This system is able to call for friends or relatives, security monitoring, services plus much more with a voice message indicating why they are receiving a call. The options are endless with this system, he says. John plans to operate a trial run with this system before selling it, but if you wish to find out more about the Medivox Medical Call System, you contact John at Marlborough Electronics Security Specialists for more information.

0$.,1* :$9(6 New Zealand’s Major Sport Fish

Power Fishing Just landed Power Jig POWER ROCK Inchiku. This is no slow jig, it’s an Inchiku! Bump it on the sea floor, drop it in a work up, it’s highly effective. Fish on light braid 8-12lb and get down even with a fast drift. These out-fish softbait.

New Zealand offers some of the most spectacular sport fishing opportunities in the world, hosting a wide variety of different game fish that often reach their maximum size in our waters. The following is a brief summary of our more popular sport fish including where and when to target them. Striped Marlin: This is probably our most recognised game fish and the one that put New Zealand on the map as a world-class marlin fishery. In the summer months, striped marlin are abundant throughout the top half of the North Island. The east coast gets more pressure due to the more sheltered ports and conditions, but a large number of fish also run down the west coast. Hot spots are the Bay of Plenty, the entire north eastern coast from Tutukaka through to North Cape and the Three Kings islands Blue Marlin: Over the last couple of summers, catch-data suggests that blues are becoming a lot more common in our waters. The Three Kings, North Cape and the Northland coastline are all

hot spots and a good run of Blues can be expected off the East Cape during a short time frame, usually around February. Black Marlin: Blacks can be encountered throughout the summer months around the upper half of the North Island coastline. They are more frequently found in closer than the other species and are usually hooked by unsuspecting anglers who are live baiting off a reef or headland for kingfish. Most are found off the Northland coast and Bay of Plenty, especially off Mayor Island, White island, Whale Island and the Motu river mouth Broadbill Swordfish: The Broadbill fishery is still in its relative infancy in New Zealand, yet it has been made clear through commercial catches that we do have a good stock of them here. Swordfish can be caught year round off our entire coastline but the more popular spots are the canyons off the Northland coast and the Three Kings. For a full list of sport fishing opportunities throughout New Zealand, check out www.fishing.net.nz

inside and out Wow! The beginning of Spring was a stunning start to the warmer months and what better way to mark the occasion – a spring clean inside and out. The cold dark days of winter can leave us feeling sluggish and unmotivated resulting in faded skin and expanded waistlines. Spring is the perfect time to initiate a cleansing programme, helping to shed unwanted weight and improve our energy levels. But there is one common question asked amongst people is; “Why can’t I lose weight. Most people gain weight as they grow older, especially around their waists and hips despite their best efforts to diet. It is well known that weight loss results are greater if you receive face to face regular support to modify lifestyle changes rather than going it along.

17

Some people feel ashamed about being overweight and find asking for professional help humiliating. At system:slim we have always offered weekly consultations in our clinics because we know that one to one face contact is integral to our clients achieving their maximum results in managing weight. We also know that some find it difficult to find time to visit a clinic, or prefer the comfort of their own home. So we have developed the Home Support Pack, offering the same level of support at a time that suits you. For more information about how we can help you spring clean your body inside and out, contact Jean Rooney at system:slim.

Pizza Hut is Back! Opportunity to buy into an established food brand with a proven track record. Pizza Hut, New Zealand’s biggest and most popular pizza chain with international backing, has over 90 stores throughout the country, with sales of over $60 million a year. After two years of sub-optimal performance, Pizza Hut is now showing strong growth in both sales and proďŹ tability. The chain is operated by Restaurant Brands along with its other two large franchises, KFC and Starbucks Coffee. Restaurant Brands and Yum Restaurants International (the franchisor) have decided to sell a number of stores to independent franchisees. This will provide opportunities for entrepreneurial business people to become owner-operators and maximise their returns whilst being supported by the considerable resources of Restaurant Brands in New Zealand and Pizza Hut worldwide.

Speedway season ready to roar By Celeste Lodewyk It has been a long wait for speedway fans but the 2010/2011 has finally arrived. Eastern States Speedway will roar into life this Saturday with its official opening meeting beginning at 7pm. With an action packed programme put together thanks to the hard work and dedication of club and committee members, the crowd can expect a thrilling display. The action kicks off with the Pete Dickson Memorial Trophy

and BNT Trophies in stock cars, street stocks, saloons, production classes before finishing with the much anticipated demolition derby. From here on, Eastern States has some major race events lined up for the 2010/2011 season, all of which are expected to both raise the club’s profile on a national basis and draw plenty of out-of-town competitors. In the Saloon class the Steve Williams DHL Saloon series in November is set to heat up the scene as will December’s

ELF Supercup- a five round South Island Super Saloon series featuring the south’s top drivers and cars. Another saloon event making its’ debut in Marlborough is the South Island Saloon Championships. On the stockcar scene the New Zealand Stockcar Championship will be held here in January - one of the biggest events in the club’s history. So do not miss out on a spectacular start to an exciting season. Gates open at 6pm and racing starts at 7pm this Saturday.

Eastern States Speedway saloon driver Paul Cambie puts his car through one last set of practice laps before the club’s opening night this Saturday.

Endurance walk to Marchers descend on Blenheim raise funds for St John A team of ASB staff is tackling a 24-hour, 115 kilometre walk between Nelson and Blenheim in a feat of fundraising endurance for St John. The sponsored walk starts next Wednesday 20 October in Nelson, with a team of 15 people from ASB Relationship Banking in Nelson, Marlborough and the Auckland head office taking turns to cover the distance within 24 hours. Almost half of the walk will involve tramping overland through the night, with a small group walking 45 km from Nelson up the Maitai Valley and over the Maungatapu Saddle in darkness. They will meet a second group of walkers at Pelorus Bridge that will take it in turns to walk by road to Marlborough. Walkers in groups of three will take turns covering ten kilometre legs – with an estimated arrival time in central Marlborough of 6:30pm on Thursday. St John Northern Region South Island General Manager David Thomas says the walk will raise welcome funds for a St John Events ambulance.

“This is a challenging way to help St John support our local communities, and we are grateful that our community partner ASB is willing to organise and then carry out this epic fundraising venture. The funds will go towards a new events vehicle, increasing our capacity to assist the public at large events.” ASB Chief Executive Relationship Banking, Stewart McRobie, says the fundraiser is an exciting way to help St John. “A team of local Nelson and Marlborough ASB people initiated this walk, and we’re all very keen to get our feet moving in the name of a great cause. Look out for our intrepid walkers on the road, and show your support by donating to St John.” The public can donate funds in support of the walk in ASB branches in Nelson and Marlborough, or call ASB Relationship Banking in Nelson on (03) 546 6828. Several refreshment stops along the road from Pelorus Bridge to Blenheim will also offer passers by the opportunity to donate towards the cause.

By Celeste Lodewyk Last Friday the public was treated to a spectacular display of leisure marching in the streets of Blenheim. Forty-one leisure marching teams from all around the island came together in Blenheim for the annual South Island Leisure Marchers Day on Saturday. Marchers gave the public a taste of their talents with their street march on Friday, in the

lead up to Saturday’s combined march at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000. Our three local teams, Kon Tiki, Fun Seekers and the Blenheim Belaires spent the past 12 months organising the event which saw more than 500 marchers come to Marlborough. Fun Seekers leisure marcher Val Alcorn said the visiting marchers were full of praise for Marlborough, commenting on

the friendliness and welcome shown by the community. “The only complaint we had… the weekend wasn’t long enough,” Val laughs. Next on the agenda for Marlborough leisure marchers… “Now we have that out the way, we are focusing on fundraising for the National Leisure Marching Weekend in New Plymouth next year,” Val says.

Petrol heads supporting emergency centre By Celeste Lodewyk Club Holden Marlborough members have put their heads together to come up with a combined fundraiser for the Picton Emergency Operations Centre and Picton School. The “All Makes Car Show” is being held this Saturday at the Picton School and is still open for more entries, classic to new. Club captain Andy Hall said with the recession in mind, members wanted to help fundraise much needed funds for a local project. “We have around 20 members from all walks of life who want to help out local charities. “We chose the Picton

Emergency Operations Centre because it is something we can all relate to. We are only a small club but we like to help out as much as we can,” he says. Gold coin donations

made at the gate along with proceeds from a raffle being run on the day will be donated to the emergency centre. Money raised from food and drink sales will be donated to the school.

The show runs from 10am-3pm, and if you would like to enter your car at the last minute simply turn up on the day and pay the $5 car entry fee, Andy says.

Family’s slice of Webb Ellis Cup history

CHRISTMAS: 22-month old Fenella Cooney gets in amongst the growing pile of gift boxes at the Sun office, all of which are being donated to underprivileged children as part of ‘Operation Christmas Child’.

By Celeste Lodewyk How many people can boast of holding the Webb Ellis Cup, better known as the trophy for the Rugby World Cup? For the Blick family, it is a memory still fresh in their minds as it was their family member who brought it too Marlborough 20-years ago. Sheryl Blick remembers her father Russell Thomas, the past Chairman of the New Zealand Rugby Union and Chairman of the world cup rugby organising committee, passing through Blenheim with the cup in his car. As he was only staying briefly, Sheryl and husband Brian (Blue) seized the chance to capture their own piece of history by taking it around local schools and businesses for photo opportunities. “When we tell people that we had the cup here and show them photos of us with it, people look at us in disbelief,” she laughs. “We laugh about it now because at the time so many people were holding and touching it whereas now you probably wouldn’t get the chance.” The cup was taken to the Renwick School for teachers and students to have photos

taken with it. Russell also called into the then CD Broadbridge Transport Ltd Depot with the cup, which was photographed by Ross Broadbridge. “So people would believe the cup was real, local stock agent for PGG Ron Ferguson was photographed holding it by

one of their transport trucks,” Sheryl says. “Everyone was proud as punch that they could see and touch the cup, but that was what Dad was like. He wanted people to be able to see and appreciate it, which makes it extra special as it has been a long time since it came here,” she says.
