Sayu’s sea story

By Aimee O’Hagan Blenheim ten year-old, Sayu Weerasinghe, does not just love cats, netball, and her supportive family: she also has a passion for words.

In fact, the St Mary’s School student just recently became an author.

Sayu has spent the last nine months writing her paperback novel, The Coral Kingdom, which was published by online company, Lulu.com.

The colourful adventure story tells the tale of protagonist, Molly, and her unexpected journey to an “unfamiliar land” – the Coral Kingdom. When her grandmother’s dog discovers a glowing, white shell on a beach, Molly embarks on a journey – alongside new friends she meets along the way – to heroically save the underwater world.

Ten year-old Sayu publishes her first novel Continued from page 1.

Not only is Sayu ten yearsold, but English is also her second language. Originally from Sri Lanka, Sayu and her parents, Nishan and Nirosha, moved to Blenheim four years ago.

She says that her classmates were “very surprised” on the day she brought the book to school.

“They asked me for my autograph and treated me like a real author!” Sayu exclaims delightedly.

“I took copies for the principal and every teacher at the school that has taught me.”

When asked about the origin of her book, Sayu says that she wasn’t really sure about how she came up with the idea. However, she does mention that perhaps

the most inspirational factor was her interest in marine biology.

“We researched coral reefs a few years ago in school,” she says.

“I found them really fascinating.

“Originally, I wanted to write an ocean story, so I was inspired to write the book.”

But The Coral Kingdom is not just a simple, fictional story about one girl’s journey to save a mythical land: there are deeper messages beneath it’s surface.

“Some corals are endangered and I think we need to do our own part to save our ecosystem and our planet,” the year six student says.

She adds that some “beautiful parts of nature” have become extinct because

we do not take care of the environment around us.

“I think it’s really important that we take care of our nature and our oceans!”

And this, Sayu says, is the exact message she hopes to advocate through her book.

Any additional wise words from the young writer?

“It doesn’t matter what your age is; you just have to let your imagination go with you and write,” she says.

Sayu is currently working on turning The Coral Kingdom into a series.

Insurance market not working for consumers Consumers are paying more than ever for insurance but they’re not getting a fair deal, Consumer NZ’s latest report on the industry shows.

Consumer NZ chief executive Sue Chetwin said its survey research found significant problems in the insurance market, including a high level of complaints and low levels of trust.

“Just 13 percent of consumers were confident they could trust insurers to give them good advice. Many were unsure about the cover provided by their insurance policy and what they were getting for their money. Only 18 percent felt they fully understood the terms of their policies,” she said.

The survey also found one in four had experienced a problem with their insurer. The top complaint? Having a claim unreasonably declined.

Sue says insurers have wide-ranging rights to decline a claim if they decide a customer hasn’t told them something they considered material, regardless of whether the customer knew they needed to disclose this information.

“In other countries, consumer protection laws prevent insurers from unreasonably refusing a claim in cases of innocent or accidental non-disclosure.

But that’s yet to happen here, which means Kiwis are more likely to have claims declined,” she says.

Consumer NZ’s research also found those who bought cover through an insurance adviser or broker were more likely to feel they were getting a bad deal. They were significantly less likely to be satisfied with the service they got compared with those who bought direct from an insurance company.

Sue says this difference is most evident among consumers who have bought life insurance.

Just 28 percent of those who got their life insurance from a broker were happy with the service provided, compared with 44 percent who bought direct from an insurance company.

“Life insurance brokers get paid

on commission, which can be as high as 200 percent of the premium.

Commission-based selling comes with a huge risk the broker will put their earnings ahead of what’s right for their customer. The results of our research suggest selling insurance this way is leading to poorer outcomes for consumers.”

Consumer NZ is campaigning for changes to insurance law to improve protection for consumers.

Proposals to change the law have been released by the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. The deadline for public submissions on the proposals is 28 June.

By Celeste Alexander “Am I nervous? Nervous doesn’t begin to explain how petrified I am,” Stars in Your Eyes contestant Alana Sagar laughs.

Alana is one of 10 locals who have bravely stepped up to the microphone to be selected for the contest which will take place on August 17 at the ASB Theatre.

Stars in Your Eyes is a joint fundraising initiative for two local charities, Creative Kids Trust and Fulton Foundation Marlborough.

Alana will be performing as American singer, songwriter and actress Dolly Parton and a fair amount of work is going into completing the look.

“It’s going to be a lot of fun transforming into Dolly, especially since she is so well known for her large chest... I mean hair,” Alana jokes.

She admits to feeling “extremely nervous” heading into this contest as most of her singing is at home with her family, she says.

“The boys and I sing at home all the time… we’re

forever singing. The last time I performed on stage was at the age of 16 during a school musical where I played one of eight leading roles… but that’s about it,” she grins.

Alana’s background is in nursing but currently, she’s a fulltime mother to her three sons, Will, Archie and Marco. It was Archie, who inspired her to audition.

“My middle son has Pallister Killian Syndrome which is how I came to be singing in the contest. Archie attends music therapy with Creative kids and the joy that music brings to his life and the benefits the therapist makes to his development are outstanding.

“I want to be able to give back to Creative Kids, even if I am the worst singer on stage!”

Alana is in the process of sourcing ‘padding’ to replicate Dolly’s ample chest and she’s watching performance videos to get a feel for how dolly performs on stage.

“I have chosen Dolly Parton as I love her music and her bubbly ever-happy personality. Dolly once said,

‘my desire to do things has always been greater than my fear of it’. That sums me up quite well too,” she says.

Each contestant has chosen a charity which will benefit from any winnings.

Alana has chosen the Marlborough branch of the New Zealand Riding for the Disabled.

“This is a charity that is dear to my heart. Archie has riding therapy once a week with the RDA. It improves muscle tone, balance, confidence, spatial awareness, flexibility, the list goes on. This charity is run purely on grants, donations, fundraising and heavily subsided fees from the riders.

“Volunteers play a huge part in its success and they are like gold to the RDA. If this contest can help them in any way I will be delighted.

I’m not envisaging any prize money for them sadly but community awareness will be a bonus,” she smiles.

Critical injuries after car rolls A vehicle accident between Okaramio and Havelock on Saturday has resulted in a Christchurch father and his young daughter receiving critical injuries. The vehicle was also carrying the man’s wife and another child when it rolled off the road just after midday.

Lifeboats where there are none

By Aimee O’Hagan For Rapaura School students, Milly Gjelstad and Kayla Collins, a small school enquiry has been turned into a fundraising project – one that has the potential to make a big difference in many strangers’ lives.

After being asked by their class teacher to look into the topic of voyaging, Kayla mentioned to Milly that it “would be a cool idea to make it about the Syrian refugee crisis”.

“It’s a little bit different to what everyone else is doing,” Milly says.

“But it is a little more interesting for us I think... We would prefer to learn about it.”

Looking into the subject further brought the two year eight pupils to one conclusion: their project would be to raise money for international organisation, Atlantic Pacific.

“They [Atlantic Pacific] take lifeboats out into the Mediterranean Sea to save Syrian refugees who are trying to flee the war,” Milly says.

“They really need funding for new lifeboats, because at the moment they are using lifeboats that were used for training in Europe.

“We’ve chosen to do a fundraiser instead of anything else so we can do something about it... So we can make a difference, I guess.”

The girls’ goal is to raise $1500 – and they are well on their way to fundraising this money, having already made $820. All of the money has been raised through various bake sales and through the girls’ Givealittle page.

“It would be good to have people donate to the cause!” Milly exclaims.

“It’s exciting to see where this goes.”

Kayla says that researching the cause – even talking with the founder of Atlantic Pacific, Robin Jenkins – has really made herself and Milly more aware of issues happening outside of NZ, particularly the crisis in Syria and the troubling experiences of refugees.

“Before we did this enquiry, we didn’t know much about what they had to go through and how far they had to travel – I’m sure alot of people didn’t either.

“They have to make really hard decisions and even after they’ve travelled 3,000 miles, sometimes they still aren’t safe where they are.

“It’s good to understand and be aware!”

Kayla adds that she and Milly hope this fundraiser will make a “big difference”.

Villa destroyed in blaze Emergency services that attended a house fire on New Renwick Road yesterday morning did all they could to save it, but it was destroyed.

The villa style house which featured a steeple design on the roof is located opposite the Wither Hills Winery.

It caught fire just before 11am and it wasn’t long be-

fore the raging fire took hold. Firefighters did all they could but couldn’t get it under control.

Firefighting crews from Renwick, Blenheim, Waihopai Valley, Rarangi and Picton attended and the road was closed off to motorists.

No one was in the house during the blaze.

Community Awards recognise Marlborough volunteers Marlborough’s inaugural Volunteer Community Awards were held in Council Chambers last week, coinciding with National Volunteer Week.

A partnership between Volunteer Marlborough and Marlborough District Council, the awards recognise voluntary groups who make a valuable contribution to our community.

In presenting the awards Mayor John Leggett congratulated all of those who were nominated and those who received awards.

“Volunteer organisations do fantastic work in our community, across an amazing number of clubs, organisations and causes – these awards recognise that work,” John said.

Of the 23 nominations received, the judging panel had the tough task of selecting a winner and runner up for each of the four award categories.

In choosing each of the winners, the panel took into consideration the effectiveness of the activity, programme or service, the impact on the community, the volunteer input and the number of people who benefit.

While the awards are not for individual recognition, the panel noted one person who was worthy of attention. The panel

agreed that a Community Star Award was warranted.

The winners and runner up of the awards are: Arts, Culture & Heritage: Marlborough Civic Orchestra (Winner), Picton Maritime Festival Trust (Runner Up).

Community/Social Services: Selmes G a r d e n Tr u s t (Winner), Marlborough Hospice Trust (Runner Up), L a ndSA R Marlborough (Commendation).

He identified the need in the community, arranged for the pilot project using Omega Rental cars, screened and trained volunteers and secured vehicles once the need

was proven.

While the service was first set up for the Picton and Sounds areas, it become clear that it was also needed in Blenheim so Bryan expanded the service to accommodate this need.

Additional cars and volunteers were needed but that challenge was soon overcome so that Blenheim people could also have transport support to access health appointments in Nelson.

The winners and runners-up in Marlborough’s inaugural Volunteer Community Awards, a partnership between Volunteer Marlborough and Marlborough District Council. The awards were presented by Mayor, John Leggett, in the council chambers.

Maybe an extra bus Dear Ed, Cutting out some stages on the Blenheim bus route will be hard for some people who don’t have any other transport, but understandably the drivers should not be stretched to keeping a strict time table.

Maybe a solution would be to put on an extra bus, two smaller shuttle types instead of one big one.

My parents own Newman Graphics, which have the postal agency in Renwick.

It is not permanently closed.

Unfortunately we have had to shut it for short periods on occasion, and we have hated having to do so each time.

I thought this being a small town that most people were aware of what our family has been going through, and we do appreciate the support we have received from many of you.

In January 2018 my beautiful Mum passed away after an 18 month battle with breast cancer.

Sophie Green Blenheim My grandmother, she does what she loves to do, without caring what people think.

Since Mum passed our small business of 10 staff lost half, including Mum, reasons being retirement (life’s too short), having babies, and illness.

Most who knew how to run the shop, having started in there and then moved to the other side of the business. A lot of post office knowledge went with those staff.

We have now replaced the staff and have a wonderful team, but the post agency isn’t frequented enough for us to pay another wage, so our sign writer helps out when he can.

Just recently our part time admin girl was offered the job of her dreams, but helps

when she can, and I am the only other person who can cover the shop when the lovely Ella can’t be there.

I have two small children and can only work 20 hours a week. Unfortunately it’s not safe or practical for me to have the children in the shop with me while serving customers.

We are doing our best to provide this service to the community and appreciate your ongoing patience with us as we work out how best to manage these hurdles.

I hope this answers your question as to “what is going on - are there staff issues?”

By Bill McElhinney Drug abuse nearly cost Pat Buckley his life.

When Pat was eight years old, his heart was broken.

“My father, who was an alcoholic, left my mother and me and my two brothers.

“I was being bullied at school and I went into victim mode.”

By the time he was 12, he was smoking marijuana. It helped take his pain away.

At age 14 he started injecting narcotics and hanging out with kids five to 10 years older than himself.

He spent 18 years doing drugs and was hopelessly addicted.

He saw 49 of his friends die as a result of drug abuse and he himself flat lined (clinically died) three times.

He also survived a drunken car crash when he fell asleep at the wheel and smashed into a lamp post.

Now a recovered drug addict, he talks to young people about the horrors of abuse, talking candidly about his experiences while highlighting current drug trends and dangers.

He wants young people to hear a “real life” perspective in a bid to stop them from ever being tempted to try drugs.

The Trust has compiled some startling figures on our drug problems.

Pat Buckley was a drug addict for 18 years, a lifestyle that almost killed him. He is coming to Blenheim to tell youngsters how they can avoid going down the same path.

Pat is coming to Blenheim this weekend at the invitation of the Marlborough Youth Trust

to talk about drug and alcohol prevention.

“One of the results from the Top of the South youth Hui on Saturday was that youth want caregivers to know what signs to look for when youth are going down a slippery slope,” Youth Trust manager, Jo Lane, says.

One of the sponsors of Pat’s visit, Blenheim dental surgeon Ed Durrheim, heard Pat speak in Christchurch and was moved by his presentation.

“He blew me away,” Ed says.

“He was so passionate about the message he was bringing, and it was so effective.

“After his talk he was inundated with calls and texts from young people who had been touched by

what he shared.

“He can help young people make decisions now that will set them on the right path for the rest of their lives.”

Pat will be speaking at the Elim Christian Centre at 6pm on Sunday.

On Monday he will speak to Year 11 students at Marlborough Boys’ College at 12.20pm, and then to Year 12 and 13 students at Marlborough Girls’ College at 2.15pm.

On Tuesday he will be at Queen Charlotte College at 1.40pm to talk to Year 11, 12 and 13 students.

On Tuesday evening there will be a public talk at MY Space, the new Marlborough Youth Centre in Kinross Street, at 7pm.

one on one with the Sun

Ready for adventure Blenheim couple David Hart and Andrea Carr will soon be heading to Vanuatu for an 18 month long adventure as volunteers.

They talk to reporter Celeste Alexander about their plans.

Sitting in the living area of their rural home, flicking through a folder filled with information about their trip, it’s evident that both David and Andrea are growing more and more excited about their trip.

They have signed up to Volunteer Service Abroad, a New Zealand volunteering agency that focuses on international development.

Every year the agency sends skilled Kiwis to share their experience and knowledge directly with the local people and communities across the wider Pacific, to create lasting and positive change.

The reason behind David and Andrea’s decision to volunteer abroad stems from their time spent in Vanuatu helping with the clean-up efforts after Cyclone Pam struck in 2015.

They also had an interest in connecting more with the people of Vanuatu because of dealings they had with RSE workers in their own vineyard.

“David was the motivator for this,” Andrea says. “We spent two weeks helping to clean up in Vanuatu which was an awesome experience, but two weeks doing what we thought they needed didn’t really satisfy us.

“For us it’s important that we give back to their communities so during the 18 months we are there, we are going in to help the community to help themselves,” she says.

“Eighteen months should be a good amount of time to have an impact there!”

David and Andrea went online to find out how they could volunteer and came across Volunteer Service Abroad. After applying they were given a list of roles available, and it was the business advisor in horticulture that appealed to David the most.

“I currently work for Fruitfed Supplies and I’ve worked in the wine industry since 1981 so my background is in farming and horticulture,” he says.

Andrea will be his accompanying partner however she hopes to work with the community in health education.

“I work as a dental therapist but I’m actually hoping to find out what the needs are in that community and work alongside them,” she says.

Where they are going is to the Malampa province, and they will be based in the capital of Lakatoro.

They are being provided a house which Andrea says “should have” electricity and running water most of the day, no hot water, a flushing toilet, two bedrooms, cooking facilities and only two powerpoints.

“We are taking our bikes as well which will be our main transport,” Andrea says.

“What we do know is that there are around 70 dwellings in this town, a fruit and vegetable market, a butcher and a small grocery store. We aim to be living and eating as the locals do and to embrace how different their culture is to ours.”

As part of David’s role, he will spend some of his time office based, some face to face mentoring and the rest of the time being hands on with the partner organisation that he’s working with.

There will also be up to 10 days he has to camp out on the coconut plantation per month.

So far David has identified a few areas that he will be advising on including machinery that’s not being used or has broken down, irrigation systems that aren’t working properly and what other products can be farmed on the plantation.

“As an advisor it’s not about us doing the work for them. It’s teaching them new skills to do it themselves after we’ve gone. About half the land is not being utilised at the moment so there’s

things to work on,” David says.

Asked how they are feeling in the lead up to their departure, both say there’s still plenty to organise and people to say goodbye to.

“We’re feeling a mixture of excitement and panic,” Andrea

laughs. “We still don’t know what items we need to take but we do have six bags between us to fill up.

“I’m going to miss my family, work colleagues and patients but on the upside there will be a whole different set of people to

meet and form lifelong friendships with.

“I will miss a hot shower and my hairdresser though,” she jokes.

“I think it will be a great experience and I’m looking forward to the challenge,” David adds.

Gold award for Picton Library It’s been a long awaited and anticipated project and now that it’s completed, the new Picton Library and Service Centre has become a proud landmark for the busy port town.

This was a $6million project which involved a high level of craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail and more recently, it also became an award winning design.

Designed by Nick Strachan of Athfield Architects in Wellington, the Picton Library and Service Centre had outgrown its premises so a new facility was required to be both functional and futureproofed as a community hub.

The project was split into two

separable portions, involving construction of the new library as well as demolition of an old asbestos contaminated building, and the construction of an entire new town centre landscape.

Scott Construction Marlborough worked with the design team and the client to be flexible and adapt the project’s site edges to accommodate adjacent town centre works, the clients own subcontractors, and additional upgrade works that were requested during the course of the contract.

The project was completed late in 2017 and a blessing was held to celebrate the building’s official opening.

Following on from this, Scott

Construction Marlborough manager John Tovey entered into the Registered Master Builders 2019 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards where the Picton Library and Service Centre project won gold.

It was the attention to detail which made the company a standout in the awards, with judges mentioning the high level of craftsmanship, quality and attention to detail.

“They were particularly impressed by the collaborative and inclusive approach adopted by the project team, and commented on the site team being thoroughly professional and showing a high level of commitment and attention to detail,”

John says.

Asked how proud he was of the gold award recognition, John says the whole team “are very pleased”.

“It was an exciting project build in the period immediately following the Kaikoura earthquake which presented unexpected and ongoing challenges,” he says.

This is Scott Construction Marlborough’s third award at the Registered Master Builders 2019 New Zealand Commercial Project Awards in as many years. The company also won silver last year for the Chateau Marlborough expansion and gold in 2017 for the Cloudy Bay Vineyard’s Pinot Noir Cellar project.

The renovation component involved gutting the 1200sqm top floor office space and refitting with a new open plan layout and reroofing to replace leaking rubber membrane at the western end of the building.

This project was being carried out at the same time as Chateau Marlborough’s extension and was completed in 2017.

Other projects which are completed, in progress or soon to start include additions to the Emergency Operations Centre on Wither Road, a demolition

contract at Andrew Place for the MDC, a re-roofing project at Ward School, a new Marlborough Lines Renwick sub-station, a large residential extension at Springlands, and strengthening the ANZ Bank.

“We are also soon to start a new winery for the Bragato Research Winery at NMIT and recently finished a new 600sqm early learning centre at Omaka Landing,” Scott Construction Marlborough manager John Tovey says.

Mayoral reception planned for cyclist Craig

By Bill McElhinney There will be a Mayoral reception for Blenheim cyclist Craig Harper, who completed the epic Race Across America on Sunday morning.

The Blenheim builder and ultra-distance cyclist finished the 4828km ride early Sunday morning in Maryland, coming in fourth overall and third in the under 50 age group.

Craig pedalled for more than 22 hours a day during the race, sleeping, on average, 45 minutes a night, sometimes with a 15-minute power nap on the side of the road during the day.

He rode across 12 US states, covering the 4828km course in 10 days, well within the time limit of 12 days.

Craig, who had trained for 14 months prior to the event, faced temperatures as high as 40 degrees and as low as five.

Marlborough Mayor John Leggett has congratulated Craig on his achievement and plans a suitable celebration after Craig

returns home.

Craig is due to arrive back in Blenheim on Friday morning.

“Craig’s achievement is nothing short of incredible. Everyone in Marlborough is so proud of him, his commitment and sportsmanship,” John says.

“This is the toughest cycle race in the world, and on his first attempt he has come in fourth place overall and third in his age category. Throughout the race he held strong, and was near the front all the way through.

“So many Marlborough people and organisations have got behind Craig - he has a team of dedicated locals supporting him on the ground in the U.S, as well as hundreds of supporters back here at home.

“I look forward to welcoming him home for a Mayoral reception – we’ll celebrate in suitable style here in Blenheim - the Marlborough bubbles are on ice!”

A time and date for the reception will be confirmed later this week.

Cyclist Craig Harper is due back in Blenheim on Friday after cycling almost non-stop for 10 days in the Race Across America.

Winter driving tips

Winter is a crucial time to check your tyres to make sure there is plenty of tread.

Gymnastics Festival once again a ‘great day’

By Aimee O’Hagan Approximately 590 children (aged year four to eight) from 19 primary and intermediate schools across Marlborough and Kaikoura were rolling, jumping, and bending at Stadium 2000 on Friday.

They were there for the annual Gymnastics Festival, which – according to Riverlands School principal and festival co-ordinator, Dave Parsons – has been held almost every year since 1980.

Throughout the day, students rotated around stations, performing routines in skipping, vault, mat, beam, and bar work. The routines varied in difficulty, with A Graders performing the most difficult routines and C Graders performing the least difficult.

“The children enjoy meeting and mixing with children from other schools and get a thrill from using top quality gym equipment often not found in school PE sheds,”

Dave says.

“It has always been a very popular event with schools as it allows a broad range of children to successfully compete at a level that matches their skill and gymnastic ability.

“We are hugely grateful to the Blenheim Gym Club for their close cooperation in helping us run the festival.”

Dave adds that there were no negatives about this year’s festival “The children were really well behaved, enjoyed interacting with each other, were confident and prepared in their routines.

“It was great to have the parents able to view as spectators upstairs.

“Big thanks to the teachers for training the kids so well, [and for] all the lunchtime and after school practices.”

Although the festival was busy, he says that everything ran “brilliantly and smoothly”; overall, the success of the festival made for a great day.

Marlborough District Council, by the very nature of its role in Marlborough, is involved with a variety of projects at any one time.

The Projects and Contracts Manager position is responsible for delivering a number of projects across a wide range of disciplines.

Projects can, at any one time, span across reserves, community amenities, parks, sports facilities, halls, commercial initiatives, civic areas and Council subdivisions.

This role ensures that informed and supported decisions are made in the planning and delivery of Council related capital projects. The Projects and Contracts Manager also ensures that the projects adhere to Council policies, relevant consents and other legal requirements. The role thus requires someone with a methodological and systematic approach to all aspects of project work.

The role also manages service level contracts to deliver within specification and budget while maintaining health and safety standards at all times. Experience in contract management, project management and budgeting will be essential for this role.

We are looking for someone that is able to demonstrate: • Big picture thinking, with the ability to focus on the small components of a project when necessary • A proven record of delivering projects in spec, on time and in budget while protecting the health and safety of all concerned and complying to all legal requirements • Good communication and interpersonal skills to build robust relationships across a wide range of staff, community and consultants • A proven track record of successfully applying skills in change management, negotiations , and problem solving • The ability to be a self-starter within dynamic and high paced environments.

Run your tap first Many water sources used for public water supplies in New Zealand are plumbosolvent. This means that the water is slightly acidic and can dissolve metals such as lead and copper out of brass fittings, if the tap has not been used for a period of time.

Council’s water supplies are plumbosolvent in Blenheim, Picton, Renwick, Havelock and Wairau Valley.

Ministry of Health – Public Notice Some plumbing fittings have the potential to allow minute traces of metals to accumulate in water standing in the fittings for several hours.

Although the health risk is small, the Ministry of Health recommends that you flush a mug full of water from your drinking water tap each morning before use to remove any metals that may have dissolved from the plumbing fittings.

We recommend this simple precaution for all households, including those on public and private water supplies.

Jack heading towards Olympic qualifying standard

By Celeste Alexander Blenheim teenager Jack Bugler has just completed a big week of competitive swimming at the Aon Open Championships held in Auckland.

Jack, 16, competed over five days in 10 events in the Para Swimming class and achieved some “incredible” results, coach Jenni Gane says.

Jack not only managed two bronze medals and top 10 placings, but he also set personal best times in every event, taking off 49.67 seconds over 10 events.

“This is outstanding as Jack had to swim the event in the morning heats and again in the finals, so all up 19 swims,” Jenni says.

Other placings included 4th

place in the 50m freestyle, 5th place in the 50m and 100m backstroke, 50m and 100m butterfly and 100m freestyle.

He also placed 6th in the 200m individual medley and 100m freestyle.

Jack did compete in the 50m breaststroke for time only as this was not a para-Olympic event for the men who had entered.

“Jack was competing against world class athletes who included the national S14 record holder, world para qualifiers and NZ para representative swimmers,” Jenni says.

“At this event all para athletes compete together and medals are awarded through a point system where their final times are ranked against the world record in their classification, this

is why the swimmers’ times do not always reflect their final placings in the event.”

As Jack was representing the Blenheim Swimming Club, the club was placed 16th overall on points against the 70 clubs represented, a huge effort from a single swimmer.

Jack has a busy year ahead if he wants to meet the Tokyo Olympic qualifying standard next year’s Open national event in April 2020.

“Looking at the level of improvement over the past six months, I have full confidence he can achieve anything he sets his mind to,” Jenni says.

Get behind the wheel at car club open day

By Celeste Alexander How often have you watched local motorsport racing and thought to yourself, “I could do that!”

This weekend you will have a chance to find out more thanks to an Open Day hosted by the Marlborough Car Club.

The club is opening its doors (or paddock) this Saturday for the public to go along and see what the club is all about and even have a go if they like. The paddock is located at Omaka, near the airfield.

Compete with friends in a safe environment with expert tutelage from Marlborough Car Club members in your own car, and the best part is that safety gear is provided.

There are also limited club cars available, so if this event sounds like you then mark it on the calendar and get along to the Open Day which runs from 12noon to 5pm.

For those wanting to get behind the wheel and have a go, the entry fee is $10 per person and drivers must be 12-years and over.

There are of course other roles within the club for anyone wanting to be involved, but not necessarily behind the wheel.

There is a need for more marshalls and helpers for the events which the club hosts on a regular basis. These include Motorkhana, Autocross, rally sprints, tar seal sprints and trials here in Blenheim for local and visiting competitors.

travel to compete in other rally events throughout the country so there are plenty more opportunities to get involved with rallying nationwide.

Club committee member Jason Clark says people also don’t need to be part of the club if they prefer

to just help at events.

“Marshalls always get the best views and full training is given, so come along on Saturday, experience what we do first hand, and meet our members.

“It’s an opportunity for us to showcase the club and attract

Following on from Saturday’s Open Day, the full club Autocross event will be held on Sunday.

Autocross events are very popular, especially for competitors on a limited budget, and newcomers

can compete before joining the club.

Marlborough Car Club has a rich history in motorsport and has been active for over 60 years and promotes the club as being friendly, helpful, encouraging and above all - having fun.
