Vigil tonight By Bill McElhinney “This is the latest battle the free world must fight – the battle against hate!” Muslim Association of Marlborough chairman Zayd Ian Blissett’s head is bowed, but his voice is strong. He is reflecting on the horror of the killings in Christchurch on Friday, where 50 innocent people were massacred by a lone gunman. Ian knew many of the victims.

He and his wife, Nisha, were in Christchurch three weeks ago. “Nisha had a doctor’s appointment, and we stayed in a motel just around the corner from the mosque,” Ian says. “We went there a number of times, as did many other members of the Marlborough Muslim community. We knew these people. They were our brothers and sisters.” Continued on page 2.

Muslim Association of Marlborough chairman Zayd Ian Blissett has been deeply touched by the outpouring of love from the Blenheim community. He will be at Seymour Square with others for a memorial service this evening.

Standing up against hate Continued from page 1. Ian was alerted to the killings on Friday by a text, which he initially thought was a crude, cruel joke. Then Nisha turned on the television, and the dreadful news unfolded. Over the next few days the couple were inundated with visitors, well wishers, messages and calls. But it took a toll on Ian, who has previously had heart surgery, and on Sunday afternoon he was taken by ambulance to Wairau Hospital and admitted to intensive care. “It was the stress,” says Ian. “When we heard the news we cried and cried. It was all too much.” However, he was able to go home

on Monday, under doctor’s orders to take it easy. Ian will join Blenheim ministers and Mayor John Leggett at 6.30 this evening in Seymour Square for a memorial service for the Christchurch victims. “New Zealand has fought in two world wars and the Korean war,” says Ian, who is a Korean Defence Force veteran. “In those wars we were fighting for freedom. “But now we must fight a new war, a war of freedom from hate. This is the next big challenge for the free world. “The news of the Christchurch killings was like staring into the

deepest, darkest abyss,” Ian says. “But the outpouring of love and support we have received from the Blenheim community is a light of hope for us “The mosque in Deans Avenue, Christchurch, was called Al Noor, which means light. “The love and support people have shown is light for us.” Marlborough Multicultural Centre migrant services manager, Margaret Western, says race unity is more important than ever, and this evening’s service is an opportunity to express that unity. “To our Marlborough Muslim friends, some of who I know have lost people dear to them, we stand

with you and want you to know we’re there to support anyone in need at this tragic time,” Margaret says. The multi-faith vigil begins at 6.30pm in Seymour Square, and the Marlborough District Council is asking people to come to the Henry St side of the square. People are strongly encouraged to park well away from Seymour Square to help avoid congestion near the event. Police will decide at their discretion whether to close the roads adjacent to Seymour Square. Free parking will be available from 5.30 pm in the Alfred St car park, where 200 spaces are available on a first come first served basis.

TWICE WEEKLY

By Bill McElhinney A generous gift from a local firm has been a big help to the volunteers at the St John Opportunity Shop in Springlands. “We have a lot of second-hand clothing which we need to store over the winter, when there’s less demand,” shop manager Marlene Weatherall says. “We put it in bags, but they were all just piled up in a heap in one of our containers out the back. “But the local Mitre 10 Mega came to our aid and donated $1000 worth of shelving materials. “Retired carpenter Jeff Chambers kindly put the shelving up for us and we’re just delighted with the result. “Instead of an untidy pile, we can now stack things in an orderly fashion, which makes the whole thing much easier to manage. It’s great!” Marlene says. The shop sells quality products, including clothes, jewellery, furniture and electrical items. The profits from the shop go to the Marlborough area committee, which then distributes the funds in the Marlborough area.

St John shop volunteers Carolyn Gibbons, Jenny Hoog and Kath Herd are delighted with their new storage shelving, which was donated by Mitre 10 Mega. Mitre 10 retail operations manager Lindsay Somerville at the rear.

Night delays on highway a Motorists are reminded that the NZ Transport Agency highway maintenance team has started resurfacing an area of highway in the Hundalees, south of Kaikoura, and drivers will have to detour on to the Inland Road on the Kaikoura side and the Leader Road, near Cheviot, on the south side from 9pm to 7am tonight and tomorrow night.

School theft arrest A Wellington man has been arrested and charged with breaking into Richmond View School and stealing 30 classroom tablets. He also faces two charges of unlawfully entering a building on Alfred Street and receiving stolen tablets and other electrical equipment. He has been remanded in custody to appear in court next month.

Measles alert urged There was a "massive turnout" at the school strike on Friday, according to Marlborough Boys' College student, George Glover.

School strike a success

By Aimee O’Hagan There was a “massive turnout” of students last Friday protesting in Seymour Square. They were there on a school strike, which was initiated with the goal of making a notable stand against climate change. Seymour Square was buzzing with energized students, and the sheer size of the crowd was more than enough to make passersby pay attention. Marlborough Boys’ College student, George Glover, one of the pupils who led the strike, says that the turnout was a lot more than he

expected. It was estimated that up to 1500 students took part. “Overall, I feel the strike went great,” he says. “I don’t think it could have gone any better. “We were able to talk with the Mayor and our MP on the day, which was a great way to share our opinions.” He hopes that politicians will “act quickly” to make a difference. However, he is highly aware that there are “more pressing issues” that the government

must deal with first, such as the horrific terrorist attack – the “terrible incident” – committed in Christchurch on the same afternoon as the strike. George was admittedly disappointed that the strike was “lost in the whirlwind of media” surrounding the Christchurch terrorist attack, but says it is “expected and completely understandable”. Despite the focus of New Zealand media being diverted, George does mention that the majority of the global media was focusing on the strike. “New Zealand is a global leader

in sustainability, and I feel this strike was about the world influence, rather than just in New Zealand,” he says. To George, the impact of the strike was not lost. The students of Blenheim are “looking to do another strike” in the future, perhaps next year. He wonders whether or not students could do something else, something more, to make a difference. “Maybe a better use of time would be to do an ‘Earth Day’, or other combined school events,” George says.

Nelson Marlborough Public Health Service medical officer of health Dr Andrew Lindsay is urging parents to ensure their children are immunised against measles and to be alert to symptoms of the highly-contagious disease. “Immunisation is the best protection against this harmful, potentially-fatal disease. New Zealand children should not have to suffer measles,” Andrew says. Parents should check their children’s immunisation record and if in doubt, they should call their GP or practice nurse.

Fibresafe can test for asbestos Fibresafe NZ Ltd began in Blenheim when the demand and need for asbestos testing in the region grew due to the recent earthquakes. Seeing the demand and the gap in the market to help, locals Ian and Don who already had Fibresafe NZ Ltd set up throughout NZ decided to set up shop on Scott Street, Blenheim. Looking after the Blenheim office is Mark Atkinson who is happy to help everyone from the “little guys” through to the bigger companies that need testing before demolition. “We believe in supporting the community and local community

groups,” Don says. Mark and the team are dedicated professionals who are fully qualified and independently accredited to undertake asbestos management surveys (including IP402 and IP404), demolition and refurbishment surveys and clearance assessments for businesses and the general public. Fibresafe offers a wide range of services from demolition and refurbishment surveys, mold detection and analysis, soil sampling, air sampling and monitoring, water sampling and monitoring, to asbestos and environmental consulting. The team can also provide

awareness training for your work force to make sure you have a better understanding of the potential dangers from asbestos in their work and home environments. “If treated correctly, asbestos is not too much of an issue and can easily be managed by taking the appropriate actions to keep it in a non-friable state,” the team at Fibresafe says.. “It’s the tiny particles of asbestos that you can’t see that are the greatest danger to you and your family.” Drop in and see Mark for a chat about what solution will work the best for you and your environment.

Mussel Festival was a winner By Bill McElhinney Close to 5000 people turned up at the Havelock Domain on Saturday for the 2019 Havelock Mussel and Seafood Festival. Festival organiser Hans Neilson says they are still waiting on confirmed numbers, but preliminary figures indicate an increase from last year. “One of the cool things about the Festival is that the profits go back into the community so those numbers mean not only a great event, but more resource to put back into the community projects,” Hans says. “Our guests and entertainers also had a great time. I got a really nice text

from Annabel Langbein afterwards thanking us for putting on such a great event and Katchafire were really happy to be back in front of a Kiwi audience after a prolonged US tour.” Kono’s Angela Fredricks was the hero of the Festival, holding the Guinness World Record for Mussel Opening. Her record form last year is still the one to beat and no doubt she will be back again next year to have another crack, Hans says. “Were really excited to see the Festival grow from strength to strength and this year exceeded all of our expectations. We couldn’t be happier with the outcome”

Q: Should our gun laws be tightened and should semi-automatic weapons be banned in the wake of the Christchurch killings?

Fillippa Haigh Blenheim

Yes the gun laws need to change, they need to be stricter. There’s no need for semi-automatic rifles - you don’t need them for hunting or anything else.

What’s happened is disgusting, and our gun laws do need to change. There’s no place for semi-automatic rifles in this country. We don’t need them!

I don’t mind people hunting, but the gun laws should be tightened, and we don’t need to have semi-automatic weapons either.

We need to tighten up the gun laws - it’s too easy now to get firearms, and there’s no need to have semi-automatic weapons in New Zealand.

Yes, the gun laws need to be tightened, and the test to get a gun licence needs to be stricter. And there’s no place for semi-automatic weapons.

Yes, the gun laws need to change. And there’s absolutely no need for semiautomatic weapons to be held by anyone in this country.

Market St park Dear Ed, I see the ‘big kids’ playground is still there, several weeks later, blocking access to Market St for vehicles, unless of course they want to drive around the block. Nice for a weekend, but why block our main street for weeks? Why not put it in Seymour Square or somewhere where it does not block off a main thoroughfare! Get back to basics, District Coun-

cil. Who paid for the staff member to hang around to make sure no one nicked a hammock? Stick with your knitting MDC, a lot of people have had enough of money being wasted on various councillors’ whims. The cycle way fiasco in Eltham Road another example. Time for a serious change. T. Bloomfield Blenheim

Lynette Rayner, Chair of the Blenheim Business Association replies: The pocket park at the south end of Market St is a Blenheim Business Association project and that site is part of the Marlborough Mile concept that aims to attract people in and encourage them to stay longer in the CBD. A vibrant CBD is important for our local businesses.

There has been a great deal of positive feedback from the Marlborough community in general, who have enjoyed the activity options for all age groups that have been on offer over the trial period. There will be broad consultation at the end of the six week trial, and everyone is welcome to contribute to that consultation.

to Marlborough also, adding this region to the medium-scale event declaration. The drought may have been broken, but the effects of a dry year will linger well after all the grapes have been harvested. Yields are down and on average there is less juice in the grapes. Evidence is mounting that this kind of trend will continue, with longer dry periods and then more significant rain events.

This season has had everyone involved asking how we best prepare for the future and it is something we will be looking into, as will private grape growers and wine companies. As a winegrowing industry we rely on rainfall to recharge dams, rivers and aquifers. When none of these options are available and the water has been exhausted in private or community dams some growers rely on tanker-

ing water, at significant cost via payment for the water, transport costs and often temporary storage costs, to (hopefully) maintain a crop, or in the worst case, preserve the rootstock for another season. This activity was a short, sharp and expensive backstop and should have ceased now the dry spell appears to have ended. Marcus Pickens General Manager Wine Marlborough

Watering grapes Dear Ed, In response to queries about trucking water to vineyards: Marlborough has had an exceptionally dry grape growing season, with just 20 per cent of the long-term average rainfall received in the month of February, following about 8 per cent of the long-term average rainfall in January. OPINION

Some of the floral tributes and messages of support for Christchurch victims laid at the Seymour Square memorial in the last few days. Most Marlborough people care, but there are still attitudes that need to be confronted.

This IS some of us By Bill McElhinney Blenheim Sun senior reporter “This is not us, this is not New Zealand.” While it was heartening to see and hear the outpouring of grief, sympathy and support that followed the tragedy of the Christchurch shootings, it is also a good time to reflect on an unsavoury truth: This is some of us. We need to grasp the nettle, to face the fact that right here in Blenheim there is a nasty little river of prejudice and sometimes hate that runs through our society. Let me explain: Here at The Sun newspaper we get letters from people, who don’t want their names published, attacking governments for attempting to address past wrongs done to the Maori people. Obviously, we don’t publish these letters. Some are quite racist in their sentiments. Staff at the Marlborough Migrants

Centre will tell of being abused for the work they are doing in helping those from other countries settle here. They will also tell of immigrants being verbally abused. Here. In our town. In our streets. The recent news that more immigrant families will come to Blenheim over the next couple of years unleashed another round of calls and correspondence decrying this move. The message they send is clear: “We don’t want these foreigners here!” Just recently, a Blenheim backpackers that houses RSE workers has been the target of missiles and abuse, hurled by someone with racist attitudes. And all this comes from people in our community. This is us, or at least some of us. So what should we do? If we have the opportunity, we

should confront these people and their attitudes. We’re inclined to be passive when it comes to awkward situations. We don’t want to get involved. Yet societal change can be brought about by fronting up to things. When I was a young journalist, many people in the industry smoked, and newsrooms were often a fug of tobacco smoke. Now, because we know of the harm it does, we no longer condone smoking in workplaces, bars, restaurants and even some public places. Years ago, many people thought little of having a few beers and hopping behind the wheel. But now we know what harm this can do, we no longer condone drink driving. It’s taken a while, but when enough people decide these things are no longer acceptable, society changes. We tend to confront the smokers,

the drink drivers, rather than turn a blind eye. Now is a good time for us to decide we won’t tolerate the racist attitudes that some of our citizens harbour. It’s time to speak up; it’s time to confront these attitudes. It’s time to say: “This is not us.” Consider this: While shooting accused Brenton Tarrant went out on his own, he was not alone. He had the support and probably even the encouragement of untold on-line subscribers who followed his hateful posts and watched his posted video. The on-line trolls give oxygen to such people. And as you should know, when you feed oxygen to a flame, it burns brighter and brighter, eventually becoming hot enough to consume, to do real damage. People like Tarrant don’t exist in a vacuum. They seek to gather supporters, to encourage the spreading of their message.

2019 SPEC 4WD GLXR $39,990+ORC*

We can’t stop the on-line antics of such people. That’s a whole other issue we will have to deal with at another time. Although if you’re a social media user, you might like to take a deep breath and think about what you post on-line. But in the meantime, if we come in contact with the people who harbour such attitudes in our own fair town, we need to take a stand, to speak up, to say “This is not acceptable!” It may not be outright hate speech, but it’s not hard to find people who want to gripe about Maoris, immigrants, people of different races and religions in our society. Let me finish with a powerful quote, used by President John F. Kennedy, and attributed to John Stuart Mill: “The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men (and women) to do nothing.”

New Triton 4WD GLXR is a whole lot meaner. With Easy Select 4WD and a new 6 Speed Manual Transmission, this beast is bred for the wild. It’s packed with safety features like Forward Collision Mitigation and Lane Departure Warning, it’s highly intelligent. Winter WINTER TEN easy ways to save money and cut your electricity costs 1. Talk to your electricity company about which plan is best for you. Most companies provide options including direct debits at a flat rate all year round, pre-payment meters and low use rates for people who are very frugal. 2. Most of your electricity bill will go on hot water so use less if you can. Set your washing machine on a cold wash and rinse your dishes in cold water. Take short showers instead of baths. Showers use 60 per cent less water than baths. 3. Fix dripping taps. A dripping hot tap can cost $80 a year but a washer to fix it costs less than $1! 4. If your hot water cylinder is old, keep the heat in by using a hot water cylinder wrap. These are available from hardware stores. Make sure the thermostat is set to produce a temperature of 55C at the tap (this will also prevent scalds). 5. Always turn the lights off in rooms when you leave them. But if you are using energy efficient light bulbs it is better to leave them on if you are returning within ten minutes.

6. Appliances that have a standby function (such as TVs, stereos, mobile chargers, computers or microwaves) should be turned off at the wall. This can save you up to $75 a year. 7. Clothes dryers can be very expensive to run so try not to use them unless you really have to. Heated towel rails are also expensive and cost around $120 a year to run. 8. Make sure there is generous air space behind the back of your fridge and try to locate it out of direct sunlight, or in a cooler room like the laundry. Don’t open the fridge door too often or leave it open. 9. Make sure you cool food before putting it in the fridge. Turn off your second or ‘drinks’ fridge - this could be costing you $190 per year. 10. When cooking keep the oven door closed. Always keep lids on pots and use as little water as possible to cook foods. Simmer rather than boil food and if possible use a microwave, as this uses 30-40 per cent less power than a conventional oven. Defrost food naturally if possible, (in the fridge is best) rather than in the microwave.

Heat your winter sustainably Do you want to change the way you heat your house because it’s no longer energy efficient, costing you a lot of money or is environmentally friendly? Most people use electricity, gas or wood to heat their homes. Luckily, there are some heating options use energy more efficiently, costing you less to heat your home. It’s important to remember that to get the best results from your heat source, including efficiency, homes must be insulated. Insulating your home reduces the amount of heating you need to keep your home at a comfortable temperature. Something else to consider is that all forms

Maxwell Road - Blenheim

of heating have effects on the environment, so consider these issues when you are looking at the different options available. For example, about a third of New Zealand’s electricity comes from burning coal, gas and oil at power stations - a process which produces greenhouse gases leading to climate change. Gas and LPG are more energy efficient than electricity but they still produce greenhouse gas emissions (although less than electricity generated by burning fossil fuels). Wood and electricity generated through renewable sources such as hydro, wind and solar produce the lowest greenhouse gas emissions.

Here are some ways to make sure you set you and your house up for success these coming winter months. • Get your heat systems checked and serviced. • Check your smoke alarms • Go around checking your doors and windows for leaks or drafts to prevent future heat loss. • Clean your fireplace and chimney. • Clean out the gutters of your house. Clogged gutters can prevent draining. • Inspect your roof to make sure nothing is damaged. • Trim your bushes and trees.

How much clearance is required? Under the Electricity (Hazards from Trees) Regulations 2003, trees must be kept a safe distance from power lines for public safety and to protect electricity supply. The Regulations define the clearance requirements using two zones, the Notice Zone and Growth Limit Zone. The Growth Limit Zone is the space around the power line where trees must not encroach at any time. The Notice Zone is one metre beyond the Growth Limit Zone. The distance required for each Zone is dependent on the line voltage, as shown in the table below: Growth Limit and Notice Zones for Line Spans less than 150 metres OVERHEAD LINE VOLTAGE

EVENT: Marlborough seafood on show Pop up stalls in Market Street showcasing the fruits of Marlborough marine farming drew a good crowd on Thursday. Oysters, mussels and salmon samples were snapped up and even the raw, shucked mussels won many people over.

Yum! Andrew Forsythe enjoys a taste of New Zealand King Salmon from the Marlborough Sounds.

Mmm . . not bad! Elena Smith tries a raw mussel.

Max Pudney and Rosalind Goodwin were keen to sample the seafood treats.

It’s not as easy as it looks. William Roundhill has a go at shucking a mussel.

Young rowers ready for next challenge By Bill McElhinney A team of 20 Marlborough Boys’ College rowers leave tomorrow to travel to Cambridge, where they will compete in the annual Maadi Cup regatta to be held on Lake Karapiro. The boys will train up there over the weekend before racing starts on Karapiro on Monday. “All crews are looking good and are well prepared,” head coach, John Robinson, says. “We will be entering a wild card crew for this regatta, a novice eight that hasn’t been raced this season.” The young rowers have been training hard, twice a day most days and weekends, John says, and achieved good results at the recent secondary schools champs. “We have a great coaching team, Glynn Davis, Grant Morgan and Bob Gilchrist, and we all get on well, and I would like to acknowledge their efforts throughout the season,” John says. “My role is that of the under- 15 novice coach and we have some good chances for medals,” Glynn says. “We combine our novice under-15 group with some of our second year under-15s. Mak-

ing the finals at Maadi is hard enough but we have high hopes in the Octi, Quad and double. “And it is great to have parents come up to us coaches and say how much rowing has changed their sons for better,” Glynn says. The Boys’ College rowers did well in the South Island Secondary Schools regatta held recently at Twizel. Gold under-18 novice double: Fred Vavasour, Nikolai Malteson. Gold under-18 novice four: Logan MacDonald, Dylan Burton, Oscar Schluter, Archie Schluter and George Burton (cox). Gold under-18 novice quad: Fred Vavasour, Logan MacDonald, Dylan Burton, Oscar Schluter and George Burton (cox). Silver under-15 double: Rhys Salvador, Sam Feltham. Silver under-15 Octi: Hugh Straker, Leon Poswillo, Ashley-James Fitzgerald, Sam Feltham, Dylan Burton, Mason Henderson, Archie Dillon, Levi McCauley-Bown and Ollie Price (cox). Silver under-15 quad: Rhys Salvador, Sam Feltham, Ashley-James Fitzgerald, Levi McCauley-Bown and Riley McCauley-Bown (cox).
