By Bill McElhinney It’s fun time on the Picton Foreshore on Saturday as the popular Picton Maritime Festival celebrates its 14th year.

“It’s a family oriented event, celebrating the unique maritime heritage of Picton and the Marlborough Sounds,” says Festival chairperson Beryl Bowers.

“There will be everything from live music to raft races and fireworks.

The popular festival is expected to attract a crowd of up to 6000 people.

“Our headline act this year is The Koi Boys, straight from the Gold Coast, featuring Picton’s own Kevin Keepa,” Beryl says.

We have Treasure Island for the little ones, bouncy castles etc for the older children, raft races for all ages, clinker boat races for all the family, and performances from local talented youth as well as national artists..

“And there are food and craft stalls and other static displays.”

‘Build a Boat,’ is back with all the equipment required to build a raft on the foreshore.

“We’ve put together packs of materials you can use to build a boat of your own design,” Beryl says.

“You can get a team together, assemble your craft, and then see if it will float!”

Among the entertainers coming back is Goodtime Music Academy director Jonny Wilson, who teaches children how to make instruments from rubbish, then leads them in a performance with their creations.

The festival committee is a registered charitable trust and a number of organisations benefit from either participation in the event or

from funds raised.

Organisations such as the Picton Lions Club, Picton Volunteer Fire Brigade, Picton Clinker and Classic Boat Club, The Cancer Society and Endeavour Park Pavilion Society, have opportunities to raise funds through participation in the event and other groups such as Kaipupu Point and Mistletoe Bay Trust have opportunities for exposure.

Funds raised by the festival trust are distributed back into the community.

The festival has grown in size over the years and now attracts hundreds of people.

It starts at 11am and goes on until 11pm, finishing with a magnificent fireworks display at 10pm.

Former Picton boy in headline act

By Bill McElhinney Former Picton lad Kevin Keepa will be coming home as part of the headline act for Saturday’s Maritime Festival.

Kevin, who grew up in Picton, is one of the Koi Boys, who were big news back in 2016 when they wowed The Voice Australia judges with their rendition of the swing harmony classic Sh-Boom.

“It was probably the highlight of our careers,” says Nuz Ngatai, who partnered with Kiwi singers Kevin and Danny Faifai to form The Koi Boys in 2008.

They were the first trio to ever audition on The Voice Australia, and were a hit among fans, both locally and across the Tasman.

They were knocked out before the finals, which caused outrage on social media, but certainly put the trio on the map as clear crowd favourites.

Since then they have been performing almost every Sunday at the Gold Coast’s Koi Dining & Lounge Bar, which is how they got their name.

Their “Sunday Session” show at Koi Bar is a must-see for those visiting the Gold Coast, and has become so popular that it sells out weeks in advance.

The group came together after Wellington transplants Kevin – formerly in the group Sex & Chocolate – and Danny – a one-time karaoke operator – connected with Nuz on the Gold Coast music scene.

Wanted - Pest Detectives!

By Bill McElhiney The Government’s plan to make New Zealand predator free by 2050 is old news for Picton - they started ages ago.

Picton Dawn Chorus has spent many years establishing a predator free zone in the town by encouraging residents to trap pests and record their success.

A stunning safe haven for native wildlife has also been established at Kaipupu Point, the small peninsula that juts into Picton Harbour.

It is protected where it joins the mainland with a predator-proof fence and New Zealand birds, lizards and invertebrates can thrive there away from introduced predators.

However, any birds leaving the sanctuary are still at risk from predators, so Picton Dawn Chorus is working with local residents to create a pest free area around the sanctuary. Together Picton Dawn Chorus and Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary are hoping to show people how they can find out what predators are around so that the right traps can then be used to humanely remove them.

They are inviting families to join them in becoming pest detectives, as part of the Department of Conservation Summer Explorer Programme.

Families are invited to come along to the Picton Library at 9am on Saturday for fun and educational activities around identifying animal pests by their footprints, teeth marks and other clues.

Families will be able to prepare some of their own pest detective equipment to take home and find out what critters are lurking in their own gardens.

After the morning activities at the library, participants have the option of joining a Beachcomber boat trip to the Kaipupu sanctuary.

Fire at waste centre

The Blenheim Waste Sorting Centre has been closed for the past two days following a fire there on Monday morning.

Marlborough District Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says it was likely the sorting centre would re-open today.

The Resource Recovery Centre and Reuse Centre are open as normal for recycling service, Alec says.

CCTV camera footage captured the fire starting in a skip at the centre at 3.30am on Monday morning.

Alec thanked Fire and Emergency for their rapid response, which brought the fire under control quickly and limited further damage to the facility.

Shut for business Hospitality New Zealand national treasurer Tony Crosbie has expressed concern about Blenheim eateries being closed in peak tourist time.

During visits to Kaikoura and Blenheim over the Christmas period, Tony says he saw 60 per cent of the eateries shut for business.

“It’s quite concerning because all the accommodation is chocka and a lot of people had nowhere to go.”

Where possible, eateries should be opening and passing on the costs to customers “where they can” to allow for the increased cost of wages, Tony says.

A strip of highway along Middle Renwick Road will be closed for several short intervals today. A New Zealand Transport Agency spokesman says trees are being removed from a private property next to the highway.

While it was intended that each tree would be felled back onto the property, traffic along the road would be stopped with each tree felling in case a tree fell across the road.

Traffic delays were expected to last no more than five minutes.

Country music awards this weekend

It’s a feeling.”

This feeling will be largely felt this weekend when the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards take to the stage in Blenheim.

This is an annual event that keeps on going from strength to strength, and with even more entries this year the awards weekend is looking to be another successful one.

There are 48 people registered, 11 more than last year who will be performing across 215 entries, and are coming from as far up as Rotorua, Otorohanga and below Invercargill.

The weekend kicks off with the awards Showcase on Friday, January 18 at 7.30pm at the ASB Theatre. Door sales for this are only $10 and the public is encouraged to go along and enjoy the performances which will include guest artist Suzanne Prentice.

Suzanne will be performing as well as judging the awards over the weekend.

Proceeds from this show will be benefiting Cancer Society Marlborough.

Former Blenheim woman Vicki Downes will be a judge at the 2019 Gourmet Paradise Co u n t r y M u s i c Awards being held this weekend. The public can watch the auditions.

Firefighters who went to Canada honoured

By Megan Connolly Local firefighters Mark Hodges, Peter Selby, Rob Horsenail and Steve Smith have collectively been awarded Marlborough Firefighter of the year for their work in Canada last year.

Blenheim Rural Fire Force controller Richie Law made the award at the annual end of year dinner in December.

“It’s our way of acknowledging anyone that has done something that goes above and beyond,” Richie says.

Last year the four men spent five weeks in Canada fighting major fires in different areas.

In August last year dozens of Kiwi firefighters were dispatched to Canada where there were at least 453 fires burning in British Columbia.

For many of the Marlborough volunteers, the new environment and role they were given meant they had to step up to the challenge.

Mark took on the role of air operations in Northern British Columbia during the period, and was so good they wanted him back.

Peter stepped up and took on the role of one of the crew leaders while in Canada, and is currently firefighting over in Australia.

I’m not too worried. People are generally friendlier in small towns than in bigger cities.

Personally, in Blenheim, I don’t feel threatened. It’s a pretty moderate and safe town, there are lots of old people.

There’s nothing too sinister here. We have felt very safe travelling around New Zealand.

I still feel safe here in New Zealand. We’re lucky in Kaikoura that it’s quite quiet.

I do. I don’t need to spend my life worrying about what I can’t change or have any control over.

We’ve been travelling around New Zealand for the last couple of weeks and we feel very safe here. Everybody has been very friendly.

Dear Ed, I see OSPRI, with DoC’s blessing, is to drop 1080 in the Clarence valley for bovine TB purposes.

What a bad joke on taxpayers and farmers who fund OSPRI. NZ is TB free by required world yardstick - i.e. the limit to be “TB free” is 0.2 per cent for TB infected herds and 0.1 per cent for infected cattle.

NZ rates of TB infection in cattle are about 0.0019 per cent average over the decade or so - so far below that required for a TB free declaration that New Zealand must be one of the world’s most Tb free countries.

Besides, 1080 is cruel, taking more or less two days to slowly kill. I note SPCA have opposed 1080 on cruelty grounds.

But governments are in denial.

While farm stock are protected from cruelty, Section 30A of Animal Welfare Act exempts DoC/OSPRI to allow them to wilfully and recklessly ill-treat wild animals with poisons.

America is being traumatised by Trump’s supporters, most of who represent the gun-toting, white-is-right loony fringe.

Meanwhile, Britain faces a Brexit crisis brought about by the Conservative Party Right-wing rump. Analysts have warned that crashing out of the European Union will send the UK economy into recession.

New Zealand would, of course, be affected by this.

New Zealand has already suffered enough from the effects of the Right-wing market-led rule.

John Key treated the country much the same way as he did when he was a currency trader, flicking of our assets to overseas bidders for short term gain.

Beach Fest promises to be heaps of fun The Beach Fest team.

Beach Fest 2019 is a music festival featuring young local talent, being held Shelley Beach, Picton, from seven to 10pm on Saturday, January 26.

“There will be performances by young people right here in Marlborough, special performances by the group Bcre8ve, night swimming, volleyball, food vendors, fire pits and much more,” Marlborough Youth Trust worker Rebecca Nafe says.

Auditions have been held and a number of young performers are honing their acts for the evening.

The Queen Charlotte College kappa haka group will be performing along with the Marlborough Girls’ College Pacifica Dance group.

“From seven to 8.30pm we’ll have inflatables available so you can go for a swim, and the Rarangi surf lifeguards will be on hand to make sure everyone is safe,” Rebekah says.

“There will be braziers blazing along the beach so you can warm up after a dip.

“We’ll also have some beach volleyball and the fun blender bikes, stationary bikes with a high-quality blender attached to the front. Pedal power is used to drive the blender so you can make your own smoothies.”

Tickets are available now from the Youth Trust, and the first 100 sold will also get passes to a VIP tent where extra goodies will be available.

There is a bus from Blenheim to the event, but there are only 48 seats and tickets are selling fast, so get in quick, Rebekah says.

The Marlborough Youth Trust, established in 2000, provides a space for young people to develop their skills, voice ideas, discover services and take part in youth-focused events. Manager Jo Lane says the trust allows youth to take the lead.

“We supply events for young people. We do six key events throughout the year,” Jo says.

“We’ve also got 20 young people aged 14 to 24 on our youth advisory group, and they advise us and let us know in regards to consultation what they’d like to be seeing happening in Marlborough.”

one on one with the Sun

Dance and nursing combined Nursing and dancing are two of Reign Marcial’s passions that he has now combined to create dance exercise videos for rest home residents.

He talks to reporter Celeste Alexander about his motivation to start this project and why it’s receiving great reviews.

Reign grew up in the Philippines wanting to be a professional dancer. It was his parents who encouraged him to train in nursing which he was successful in, but he still felt something was missing.

It wasn’t until he moved to Blenheim and took up the role as clinical manager at Ashwood Park Retirement Village that he realised there was an opportunity to combine both nursing and dance. The results recently won a health innovation award.

“Nursing and dance are my main passions,” Reign says. “I had actually wanted to pursue dance teaching as a career so in the beginning of my nursing career I really missed it. But one day working in the ER department of a hospital I revived a patient and at that point I realised just how much I loved nursing.

“I had no regrets from that moment onwards. But not wanting to lose my dancing I still wanted to somehow combine the two,” he says.

Nearly two years ago Reign joined the Ashwood Park Retirement Village team and it didn’t take him long to recognise that many of the residents also loved to dance.

That prompted Reign to research the benefits of dance for rest home residents and found “very good” evidence of it having a positive effect on those with dementia.

“The research showed that dancing activates the areas of the brain associated with perception, emotions, memory and motor skills, so we decided to introduce a dance movement therapy called rhythm and tapping,” Reign says.

Reign choreographed the dance routine, let the residents choose the music, then enlisted the help of staff who volunteered their time to feature in a dance video. He also involved physiotherapists to ensure

the “proper movement”.

After the first six months Reign says the improvement in residents was “incredible”.

“One resident had restricted movement in her left arm, but after just six months she was moving it around more. Her family also noticed the difference which just reinforced our belief in the benefits.

“We also identified among a number of patients who showed behavioural issues such as wandering and agitation, and after one year this had stopped... ,” he says.

Reign and staff members have since produced a total of three videos which all residents regularly dance-exercise to.

These videos and the overall success of Reign’s project recently won the Aged Care category award at the Health Innovation Awards, held in November 2018 in Nelson.

“I am so thrilled and all I want is to share these videos” “I am so thrilled and all I want is to share these videos with the community.

It makes me so happy that I can combine my love for nursing and dancing and that it is benefiting our residents so positively.

“I’m grateful to all the staff who have supported this project and to my employers who have been extremely supportive.

There are staff members who are even sending the videos to their families overseas to use.

“I’d love in the future to be able to invite people from the community here for a demonstration... so watch this space,” he smiles.

When entertaining guests this summer, make sure food safety is your top priority.

Avoid tummy troubles this summer The warmer weather is a great time for families to head outdoors and host BBQ’s and get-togethers.

The unfortunate thing is that often people are hosting food-borne illnesses too.

Food poisoning is a risk in summer because of the increased temperatures which allow bacteria to multiply faster. To keep the belly bugs at bay, here are some tips on what you should and shouldn’t be doing with your food this summer.

Thaw frozen foods in fridge How often do you pull frozen meat from the freezer and set it to thaw on your counter or in your kitchen sink? Even though meat is frozen, bacteria can grow rapidly in a room temperature environment. Plan ahead and thaw meat safely in the fridge. It may be slower but it will keep your family healthier.

Not sure it’s good? Throw it out This is the easiest tip to follow and takes literally no scientific research. If you aren’t sure about the safety of a particular food, throw it away. It’s better to err on the side of caution, especially when guessing wrong could mean days spent on the porcelain throne (or in the hospital).

Factor travel time into food safety Heading to friends’ or family members’ homes and even spending the day at the beach can all take a toll on the safety of our food. When planning out your summer menu, consider how long food will be in transport, without refrigeration and what the outdoor temperature will be. Then plan accordingly.

Make pit stops along the way to add ice or

wait until you’re close to your destination to buy last-minute perishable items to limit the exposure to potential bacteria.

Keep one cooler for drinks and one for food Opening and closing an ice chest is a quick way to raise the internal temperature, making safe food storage difficult. Since bottled drinks are less likely to pose a health threat if their temperature isn’t stable, it makes sense to keep them in a separate cooler from your food. Pack perishable foods in the cooler first and then covering with ice. Since cold air sits low, it will help keep your food safely chilled longer.

Use clean dishcloths and sponges Or maybe just skip sponges altogether, since they’re one of the most concentrated spots for bacteria in your kitchen. If you’re reusing dirty dishcloths to dry clean dishes and freshly washed hands, you’re really just playing a gross game of germ tag.

Avoid cutting raw meat on wood cutting boards Use a different one to cut your fruits and veggies. This will cut down on your risk of cross contamination that can lead to serious sickness. Make sure to wash whatever board you use with hot, soapy water when you’re done and completely dry it, since moisture is your biggest enemy.

Keep dishes, counters and cooking surfaces clean Another no-brainer here folks. Cleanliness is the No. 1 way to prevent food-borne illness, because we’re not giving dangerous bacteria a place to linger.

Fixed term harvest period | Marlborough Vintage is one of the most exciting times on the viticulture and winemaking calendar, and Vintage ‘19 is fast approaching. We have an exciting opportunity for Harvest Assistants to join the viticulture team, for a period of 6 to 8 weeks, starting late February 2019. You will be joining a fun, fast paced team, looking to have some laughs, but also ensure we all hit the deadlines needed to make 2019 vintage a big success.

Duties for this role will be varied and may include both in the field work on our vineyards as well as in our weighbridge, with fruit intake.

collection and collation of grape juice samples, assessment of pest and disease levels within the vines, and measurement of vine canopy and yield components, data entry and checking, weighing in and out of trucks, internal communication and preparation of summary reports and tables.

Vintage is fast-paced, challenging and exciting – we are seeking individuals who enjoy working under pressure, and who can commit to vintage working requirements (there will be a requirement to work 6 days per week).

The successful applicants will have a high level of accuracy and organisation, an excellent work ethic, be results driven, and possess excellent communication skills, both written and verbal with a strong attention to detail. Competency with the Microsoft Office suite of programmes, Word, Excel and Outlook is essential. This role will work individually and as part of a team. A current full NZ drivers licence is required.

Training will be provided as required to upskill into this role.

Speedway’ in the blood’

By Celeste Alexander Growing up in a family of motorsport enthusiasts has inspired Blenheim teenager Jacob Lutherus to follow suit.

The 18-year-old is now in his second season of racing at Eastern States Speedway and last week was accepted into an automotive apprenticeship.

But Jacob’s sights weren’t always set on working in the automotive trade. Early in his teens he had wanted to become a veterinarian to work with animals, but after discovering his passion for cars he changed course.

Jacob recently completed a one year pre-trade course at NMIT and he’s now heading into an apprenticeship at Hitec Automotive Picton.

It’s soon to become a busy time for Jacob as he balances

work with his racing and a new project, building a streetstock car.

Last season Jacob got his first taste for the speedway track when he raced in the Farmlands Street Car series, a class that’s good for entry level racing, Jacob says.

“It’s a good option for people wanting to start out in speedway.”

This season Jacob set his sights on a class that involves more contact and leased a Holden Commodore VP, 3.8L V6 streetstock car from a local team, racing under the number 621e.

Next season he plans to race his own streetstock that he’s building, also a Holden Commodore but this time an ‘R-Series’ as part of the DILLIGAF Rebel team.

laughs. “Plus in the streetstocks there’s a good social side to the class. Everyone makes sure one another are OK and we all pitch in to help out if someone needs a hand with their car.”

Once he has more experience under his belt, Jacob’s ultimate goal is to get behind the wheel of a stockcar.

“My grandfather Kelly Thompson and my mum Vikki Lutherus both raced stockcars so it’s pretty much in the blood,” he laughs.

For now though, Jacob’s sights are set on gaining some trophies before the season ends in April.

The Streetstock Champs that were scheduled for this Saturday have been postponed. The next meeting is Sunday, January 27, starting at 2pm.

National premiership football comes to Lansdowne Park

By Bill McElhinney Blenheim football player Nick Stanton is looking forward to his first big game on home turf.

Nick plays goal keeper for Nelson United, and will be with the team facing off against Wellington in the first national premiership game to be played in Marlborough.

Nelson United’s big games are normally hosted in Nelson, but they wanted to give Marlborough a home game this season, and if there is a good crowd, Marlborough will get one every season, Marlborough Football manager Andrea Smith-Scott says.

“Nick has been a starting player as goal keeper in the last five Thumbs up for Nelson United! Goal keeper Nelson United matches, so we Nick Stanton, from Blenheim, is looking want to give him as much local forward to the big match at Lansdowne Park support as we can!” Andrea says.

Nick grew up in Blenheim and on Sunday.

Two years ago he went to Wellington to study architecture at university and was spotted by a Nelson United scout when he came home for a Rangers match.

The chance to play in the national league was too good to turn down, so now Nick commutes from home in Blenheim to Nelson every Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday and Sunday for training and games.

“I want to make the most of it while I’m young and fit,” Nick says.

“I’d like to see where football takes me. I can always go back to my studies later on.”

The Tasman United v Team Wellington match kicks off at Lansdowne Park at 2pm on Sunday, and entry is free.
