New Opawa Bridge will be built

By Bill McElhinney The historic Opawa River Bridge is going to be replaced with a new two-lane bridge.

“This is the best news I’ve had from the New Zealand Transport Agency in my time at council, which is eight years,” Marlborough District Council deputy mayor Terry Sloan says.

Terry is also the chair of the regional land transport committee and the South Island regional land transport group.

“It has been a long and arduous process and the government announcement that it was re-visiting all state highway projects was a major concern to me,” Terry says.

The 170-metre long and 5.5m wide historic bridge built in 1917 joined Grove Rd at the northern entrance to Blenheim and was the first concrete bowstring arch

construction built in New Zealand.

It had eight equal arch trusses and was registered with the Historic Places Trust in 1990 under a category 1 classification, which saved it from demolition.

$21m to build new bridge

By Bill McElhinney The NZ Transport Agency says it will take about 18 months to construct the new bridge over the Opawa.

The cost has also gone up.

The project was initially costed at $17.5 million, but $21 million has been budgeted for the project.

The budget includes land-

scaping and road realignment.

The existing bridge, sometimes called the banana bridge, is too narrow and unsuitable for current transport needs.

NZTA South Island director of regional relationships, Jim Harland, says he is pleased to be able to provide certainty for the Marlborough community.

The new bridge will make State Highway 1 more resilient to natural disasters and more secure as the strategic freight route between Picton and Christchurch.

Jim says during the construction phase, the team will continue to work with key stakeholders, affected landowners and leaseholders.

There has been significant support for a bypass, which would allow heavy vehicles to detour around Blenheim. Jim says it is possible a bypass will emerge as an option in future years, as NZTA continues to assess the resilience and safety of SH1.

“But that does not change the need to have a bridge

over the Opawa so that commuters can access the central township.”

It is expected the new bridge will increase freight and light vehicle traffic and provide more consistent travel times.

Around 9900 vehicles, including 880 heavy trucks, cross the existing bridge daily.

Weather warning The Metservice is warning southeast gales are forecast to be severe at times in exposed places in the Marlborough Sounds with gusts of 120 kmh.

The wind and heavy rain is expected to begin to ease by this afternoon.

A deep low from the subtropics has brought heavy rain and gales to parts of the country, particularly the North Island, causing flooding, closing highways and cutting power in some areas.

Some travel services have also been disrupted.

Benge & Co ‘not a robbery’

St John area committee chairman Rod Hill points to one of locks on a container which was cut open by intruders at the weekend.

Police have announced that the alleged incident of Benge & Co Green Grocers on May 21 was not an aggravated robbery as they were led to believe.

Police have arrested and charged a 44-year-old man for making a false statement to Police and for theft as a person in a special relationship.

He appeared in court on Monday.

Break in a set-back for Blenheim St John

By Bill McElhinney A senseless act of vandalism at the weekend has left Marlborough St John volunteers fuming.

Some time on Saturday night or Sunday morning intruders broke in to three containers at the rear of the St John Community Shop in Boyce Street.

They used bolt cutters to sever the locks on the containers, but found little inside that was worth taking.

However the break-in means St John will now have to provide extra security in the area and replace the container locks with

hardened steel fittings, all of which comes at a cost.

Police have been informed and advice is being sought from them and other security advisors.

“This may cost us several thousand dollars,” St John area committee chairman Rod Hill says.

“This is money that has been raised in the community and would have gone to providing much needed medical equipment.

Now we’ve got to spend it on security.

“The people who did this, or their families, may need our services at some time in the future,”

Rod says.

“It doesn’t make sense, as there is really nothing in the containers that’s worth stealing. It’s mostly items that we don’t have room for in the shop.”

“We’re fed up with this sort of thing,” shop manager Marlene Weatherall says.

“In the past we have had plastic bags at the rear of the shop ripped open and the contents scattered about.

“We had a skip there, and people came and dumped rubbish in it, even things like car tyres and old bikes. And then we have to pay to

A good read for a good cause!

By Bill McElhinney The shortest day is only a week away (next Thursday) and as winter sets in, what could be nicer than a warm fire and a good book?

So if you would like some winter reading material, the Marlborough Cancer Society are holding their annual book fair from today until Sunday at 20 Market Street, Blenheim (next to BikeFit).

From 10am to 6pm each day and 10am to 1pm on Sunday you can pop in and browse through the hundreds of good quality books that have been donated.

Volunteers have been busy sorting the books into their various categories to make it easier for you to find the ones you like.

All proceeds from the annual fundraiser go to continue the support of people in the community affected by cancer.

“This year will be the seventh book fair we have held, raising much needed funds to continue to offer free support to the community,” Hilary Gill, from the Cancer Society, says.

“With the last several book fairs we have raised over $15,000 each time and, as always, we hope to raise even more this year!”

Good quality second hand books can be donated for the Fair all this week from 10am each day, and the Picton Resource Centre staff are very kindly accepting books for the book fair, Hilary says.

“If you have any books to donate drop them off to Nicci at the Resource Centre and she will then pass them on,” Hilary says. If you have any queries you can ring the Cancer Society on 579 4379.

Search and rescue conference coming to town

By Celeste Alexander A volunteer organisation that provides land search and rescue services to lost, missing and injured people will be bringing over 200 of its volunteers and delegats to Marlborough next week.

LandSAR Marlborough has put its hand up to host the organsiation’s national conference which runs from June 22-24 at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

This a huge deal for the region as there are people from 61 groups from around New Zealand attending the conference which will feature talks on a wide variety of topics, from accidental hypothermia in NZ through to river search and rescue/canyoning.

Peter Hamill a LandSAR Marlborough team leader says while registrations to attend the conference have closed, there’s still the opportunity for the public to visit trade stalls on Saturday and Sunday in the Marlborough Convention Centre’s foyer area.

“There will be companies representing outdoor clothing, optics, mapping technology and personal locator beacons. The public are more than welcome to go along and visit these stalls plus there will be LandSAR information and committee members available to talk to if you are interested in finding out more,” he says.

LandSAR Marlborough are also keen to hear from anyone wanting to

learn more about joining.

“There are different roles within the organisation and not everyone is out in the field. Our members come from a variety of backgrounds including florists, project managers, people working in wineries, irrigation, the local Iwi and the airforce to name a few, “ Peter says.

“There is plenty of training courses available, a variety of skills one can learn and there’s usually a role to suit most people. We train once a month on a Tuesday night for two hours, so if this sounds like something you’d like to learn more about, we would love to hear from you,” Peter says.

Kiwi Adventurer

By Megan Connolly Young six-year-old Christian Lordan is excited to have accumulated 30 medals out of 96 as part of the Department of Conservation Toyota Kiwi Guardians programme.

Christian has been collecting the medals for just under two years, going around New Zealand with his mum Suzanne Grenfell and his family, searching for the ‘Guardian posts’ found scattered on the Guardian maps.

The Kiwi Guardian programme encourages kids and families to go on adventures all around New Zealand.

To take part and collect a medal, Christian and his mum printed out the maps from online, found the secret word on the Kiwi Guardian post, and entered it in online.

“We’re big outdoors fans,” Suzanne says.

Suzanne and Christian set a plan around one of the maps and go adventuring every long weekend and school holiday that they can.

Christian says he loves throwing snowballs and going on swing bridges because they are so high and wiggly to cross.

“I love waterfalls, swimming in cold water and caves because I might be standing where a dinosaur might have been,” Christian says.

“It’s great because you go to a place where you wouldn’t normally go,” Suzanne says.

Suzanne knew medal number 30 had to be special so they took a trip to Mount Cook over the Queen’s Birthday long weekend.

Suzanne also writes small stories and takes pictures of their adventures so that Christian’s class at Springlands School can read through them.

Even the class toy ‘Amazing Alligator’ took the trip.

So where will Christian and Suzanna go for medal 31?

“Next trip might be down to Invercargill,” Suzanne says.

Whitney Street students dive in with a splash

By Megan Connolly Whitney Street School students make a splash at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 on Friday mornings as part of their term long swimming programme.

Every Friday morning the 10 and 11-year-old students practice their strokes to improve their confidence and stamina in a bigger pool while their teachers look at refining technique.

Vice principal and year 5/6 teacher Christee Dalzell says; “The school is very lucky to be so close that we can just walk to the pool and make use of these local facilities.”

The programme is fully funded by Whitney Street School and works as a follow-on from the standard Fundamentals programme offered in all schools and acts as a way to encourage the older

students to get into the two metre pool.

“Our pool at the school is great for fundamentals but it’s not big enough for the older students who can just stand up when they want. Swimming in the larger pool at Stadium 2000 gives them a positive challenge,” Christee says.

The swimmers are divided into four ability groups and confidence levels, then rotate between lane swimming and free swim time.

This is the fourth year running this programme for the year 5/6 students and provides a great base for them to feel more comfortable if they want to compete in Marlborough Primary Schools Swimming Sports competitions, Christee says.

Judo clubs have success All Blenheim Judo Club’s judoka won medals in the Central Districts Open Championships held in Nelson at the weekend.

Over 85 participants from all over New Zealand competed.

“It was particularly rewarding for the coaching team at the club to see two of our newest students, who only started practising judo in February, fight so skilfully and win medals,” club head coach Shayne Jacks says.

Henare Panoho, 11, from Blenheim, won a silver in his under 45kg senior boys weight division and his brother Solomon, 13, came away with a bronze in the under 50kg weight division.

“These two students show natural flair for the competitive side of judo and I think we’ll see more good results in the future,” Shayne says.

Danny de Klerk, 27, also from Blenheim, won a bronze medal in the senior men res. Kyu open division.

“Danny did particularly well facing some of the top judo competitors from around New Zealand and did himself and the Blenheim Club proud,” Shayne says.

The weekend wasn’t only a celebration of success for the club’s judo students. Founding instructor, Dave Foley, 70, was

awarded a lifetime honorary grade of nidan, 2nd Dan/Black Belt, by the Grading Commission of Judo New Zealand, the national governing body, in recognition of his long-term service to the sport.

“Dave started judo in 1959 and had been in his previous grade of 1st Dan for over 35 years. This award is so very well deserved for his dedication, passion and commitment to judo over the years and he is still as enthusiastic as ever,” Shayne says.

The Blenheim Judo Club has both junior and senior classes on Tuesdays evenings during school terms.

These are some of the amazing creations that come out of Terri Hendriks’ kitchen.

Snowdog Confectionery is a new business specialising in custom cakes and confectionery.

“I make wedding and birthday cakes, and wedding favours.

“I target events and also supply cafes with sweet treats for people to eat with their coffee,” Terri says. “Confectionery is mainly marshmallows, hokey pokey and caramels.”

Terri’s latest creation has been an interesting one.

“I made blue Red Bull marshmallows.

“I found a few taste testers and one of the ingredients was kept a secret.

“People could identify the taste but nobody guessed it was Red Bull.

“I had to give them a few clues.”

Terri loves to experiment with her baking.

“I’m 90 percent happy with what turns out.

“I use a sugar syrup base, which has to be right the first time and then once that’s sorted everything falls into place.”

Her favourite confectionery experiment is with caramels.

“There are a million different combinations of flavours, textures, shapes and types of chewy consistency.”

And where does she get her ideas from?

“I just take a flavour of biscuit and turn it into a cheesecake.”

It’s perhaps ironic that before venturing into the baking business Terri worked in sports saying, “The main focus was keeping people active and healthy.

“I’ve always tried to help people in some way and baking became a creative outlet for me.

“Friends asked me to bake for their birthdays and I decided from there to turn it into a business.”

While Snowdog Confectionery is a parttime home-based business Terri hopes to go full time in the future.

In the meantime she is contracted by schools and the hospital as a personal trainer.

We all know what we consider a good cafe - good coffee, tasty food and a warm inviting space to sit and relax.

So when we find a cafe that serves up all of this and more, we make it our regular. This has been the case for Cafe 50-81, located along Main Street in Blenheim.

The cafe is owned by Bruce and Hong Trevett who in April celebrated their first year in business.

Asked how their first year has been they say “incredible”.

“The cafe has really taken on a life of its own... we have had so much support from the community that the business has been going at a good pace.

“In fact we thought it might start to slow down around now being winter, but we are still really busy,” Bruce says.

What customers are loving is the variety of delicious food on offer.

The lure of Hong’s handcrafted dumplings attracts people from all over the region, as well as their gourmet pies and sausage rolls.

“We are well known for our sausage rolls and pies... and the dumplings just speak for themselves. They have a very strong following,” Bruce laughs.

6.15am in time for customers to call in for their coffee and breakfast fix.

The breakfast menu has gained a lot in popularity since it was introduced, serving up Pancakes, Eggs Benedict, Eggs on Toast and the very popular ‘Big Breakfast’.

Bruce and Hong have ensured that everything can be made gluten free, including the sausages served in the Big Breakfast.

“We work with whatever the customer wants... if they want to take out an ingredient or add something else in, we are happy to do it,” they say.

Following on from breakfast there’s the lunch menu which stars a number of dishes that are cooked to order.

There’s everything from a steak sandwich and chicken tenders served with salad, through to hot filled rolls and soup.

In addition there’s also a selection of cabinet food that can be enjoyed in the cafe or taken away.

Complimenting the menu is the Tuatara Coffee, smoothies and milkshakes.

“We have something for all tastes and appetites. We look forward to seeing you!”

6. Beans Benefits: Any legume will help release short-chain fatty acids (SCFA) that strengthen your intestine cells, improve absorption of micronutrients, and help with weight loss.

Background: Beans feed good gut bugs, which in turn revs up your immune system.

New fund helps get kids to Sounds camp

By Bill McElhinney A new charitable foundation to help young people experience the best of the Marlborough Sounds has been launched in Blenheim.

The Mistletoe Charitable Foundation patron, the Hon Dame Lowell Goddard, hosted a function in the Whitehaven Room of the ASB Theatre last Wednesday to launch the next stage of the foundation fundraising.

She was able to announce a $15,000 donation for the foundation from New Zealand King Salmon.

The Mistletoe Charitable Foundation was set up two years ago to help send school-aged children, who might not be able to afford to, attend to camps at Mistletoe Bay. The foundation is raising a

$500,000 fund, and the interest from that will be used to support up to 240 children a year to attend school camps at Mistletoe Bay. Dame Lowell says Marlborough is “a very special part of the world”, and the Marlborough Sounds is the jewel.

“Mistletoe Bay provides an environment to provide a love of the natural world and an understanding of how the natural world is to be sustained.”

Mistletoe Bay has been operating as an eco-village and campground, hosting school camps as well as summer tourists, for 10 years now, and Dame Lowell says she is captivated and inspired by the environmental, social, and educational principles underpinning the bay.

Top placings for local skaters 300m T/T, 2nd place in the flying lap and 5th overall.

Zaidee Turkington, 1st place in the 300m T/T, 3rd place in the 1000m and 4th overall.

Zaidee was also 1st place in the primary 5km at the Kart Track in wet conditions.

Lily Pontague, 3rd place in the flying lap then had to retire due to injury.

Harper Smith, Gracie Wickens and Brooke Pontague also skated well in another tough Grade with 17 skaters competing.

She Shops success

By Megan Connolly It was another successful year of She Shops held on Saturday afternoon at the Nativity Centre, according to organiser Libby Barnes.

The afternoon offered shoppers free pampering, $2 entry and bargain clothing for $1, with all the proceeds from the day going towards local charity Pink Packets.

“The day was a huge success, our best so far!

“We raised over $1700 for Pink Packets so that means over 1700 items were bought by the 220 people women who attended,” Libby says.

The event was so popular this year that they had people lining up at 2pm before the doors even opened. The longest queue they’ve ever had, according to Libby.

“Women went out with bags bulging with some great bargains.

“We are very grateful to some of the local businesses that lent us clothing racks so that more clothes could be hung up this year. We are also so grateful to everyone who donated us clothes and accessories for such a worthy cause,” Libby says.

The recent Speed Skating competition held in Blenheim over Queen’s Birthday weekend drew around 60 skaters from Timaru, Nelson, Whanganui who took on our local skaters.

Here are the results of our locals: A Grade Ladies - Erin Green, 2nd place in the 300m T/T, and 2nd place in the Flying Lap. She was 5th overall. It was Erin’s first run in A Grade and she was the youngest out of 10 skaters so a great effort for the first time.

Erin also came first at the half Marathon at the Marlborough Kart Track on the Monday in very wet conditions (after a crash).

B Grade - Olivia Beldham unfortunately did not place as it was a tough grade to skate in with 17 competitors including masters men and ladies.

C Grade - Breanna Campbell, 2nd place in the 300m T/T and 3rd place in the 465m. She was 3rd overall.

We are looking for 4 experienced forklift operators to join our Warehouse team, with vacancies available across both day shift & night shift. We have 2 vast warehouse & distribution facilities at WineWorks that make for a fast-paced working environment. Our team operate many forklift and high reach vehicles and use one of the latest electronic inventory control systems as well as satellite storage robotics. Night shift hours of work will be within the hours 5.00pm to 5.00am as per the rostered shift. This shift pattern involves x2 5-day weeks and x2 4-day weeks over a month. Day shift hours of work will be within the hours 5.00am to 5.00pm, Monday to Friday. Some flexibility in hours of work may be required at times to suit the needs of the business.

Falcons falter The King Salmon MBC side put in a performance they would want to forget at the weekend when they travelled south to take on 5th place Rangiora.

The Falcons were well beaten 37-18, dropping them right down the ladder at the UC Championship to 9th place.

MBC were half the side that defeated Nelson the week before, they struggled to get their game going and let in some soft tries that consistently allowed the home side on the front foot.

Marlborough bounces back in Tasman Trophy Three Marlborough sides bounced back last weekend in the cross over phases of the Tasman Trophy, East Coast shutting out Wanderers 20-15 in Seddon, Central getting their first win against Kahurangi 61-41 and the most crucial win was Renwick beating powerhouse side Nelson 26-22 at Neale Park, keeping them in the semi final hunt.

The return of Timoci Tavatanvanavai was the talking point of Central’s victory. Nicknamed “The Difference”, the Fijian centre / wing proved he was in

fact the difference for the Blues, running in 5 of his sides 9 tries.

Creating the space for him was his midfield partner Nigel Satherley who consistently broke the line to feed the speedster. Up front, hard running prop, Peter Vakaloa was a constant handful, along with Jesse MacDonald and Reyne Volavola all touching down as well.

At Neale Park in Nelson, Renwick put in a consistent effort to put away Nelson. Fullback Glen Ballam had a fine game from the back, linking in well with Centre Ula Moala and the consistent

Mike Vaeno. Ti’I Paulo was a constant menace at the breakdown, his physicality and experience leading the way for the Renwick forwards. Kyle Marfell did an outstanding job shutting down the in-form Willie Havili which was key to Renwick’s success.

Top weekend for masters This South Island Masters 2018 held in Picton over Queens Birthday weekend was the largest held in the 20 years history of the South Island Masters.

It was the first regatta held on the Picton harbour since the Marlborough Rowing Championships in the early 1990s, bringing back many fond memories from several competitors according to the organisers of the event.

Mark James from the Wairau Rowing Club was awarded the Terry Noonan trophy for 2018 rowing volunteer.
