In the pink

By Bill McElhinney Scores of Marlborough youth will be rocking up to The Forum in central Blenheim on Friday night for a youth night market. And they should be easy to spot, as many of them will be wearing pink shirts. “We’ll have youth running a series of stalls, including food and craft stalls,” says Marlborough Youth Trust worker Chris Lippiatt. Continued on page 2 In the pink for Friday night. From left: Chris Lippiatt, Sarah Coffing, Ella Bogle, Sam Smith, Kennedy Florence, Kaleb Donald and Anthony Hamlin.

TWICE WEEKLY

Youth promote positive message Continued from page 1 “Dance on Grove and the Momentum group will be staging dance performances and we’ll have an MC running competitions throughout the evening, so you can win some awesome prizes.” The Night Youth Market, which runs from 5pm to 9pm, is being held as part of Pink Shirt Day, a day set aside for New Zealanders around the country to focus on action against bullying. “We want to bring a positive message to people in Marlborough,” Chris says. “Youth need to stand up against bullying behaviour and especially the misuse of social media.” Celebrated annually around the globe, Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 when two students took a stand

against homophobic bullying, mobilising their whole school after a student was bullied for wearing a pink shirt. Bullying is a serious issue in New Zealand, the Mental Health Foundation says. Schools here have the second highest rate of bullying out of 51 countries, and one in five workers is affected by bullying. People who identify as part of the gay community experience higher rates of bullying, and studies show people who are bullied are more likely to experience mental health issues, such as depression, anxiety and even suicidal thoughts. “In the workplace, bullying harms workers’ health, wellbeing and ability to do their job. We must work together to

say no to bullying and to support each other on Pink Shirt Day and every day,” Mental Health Foundation chief executive Shaun Robinson says. Pink Shirt Day aims to create schools, workplaces and communities where all people feel safe, valued and respected. “We definitely need to have awareness of bullying all year round, and an understanding of what constitutes bullying and the impact it has on individuals,” Chris says. “With the prevalence of social media it is so easy to do a lot of harm and not be aware of how harmful that is, especially as we often wouldn’t say the same things face to face that we feel brave enough to type from the safety of devices.”

Dwayne the Rock Johnson has donned a pink shirt to join Chris Lippiatt and others for the Friday night youth market.

Blenheim nurse key speaker at Health College conference By Bill McElhinney Mirjam van der Stoel knew from a young age she wanted to be a nurse. “I always wanted to be a nurse,” she says. “I wanted to help people, to make a difference.” Mirjam achieved her ambition, and after a good deal of study and hard work, she is now the Health of Older People community Nurse at Nelson Marlborough District Health Board. A nurse practitioner based at Wairau Hospital, Mirjam specialises in the care of older people.

Mirjam van der Stoel is one of the keynote speakers at the Women’s Health College conference.

She is also one of the keynote speakers at the Women’s Health College conference which opens at the Blenheim Convention Centre tomorrow evening and runs through until Saturday evening. The opening address, Relationships, the Real Currency, will be given by 2012 NZ Community Hero and international motivational speaker Henare O’Keefe. On Friday morning Mirjam will present Do Diamonds Dull with Age? “I’ll be talking about things such as what happens when you age, how you can live

your life as you get older,” Mirjam says. “Things change as you age, your body changes, health care becomes more complex, and medications need to change.” Mirjam is the only nurse practitioner in Marlborough working with older people, and has a wealth of experience to share. “I work with older people in their homes and in rest homes, I work in conjunction with their GPs to help diagnose and prescribe,” Mirjam says. “I enjoy relating to the elderly and Marlborough has

a growing older population.” Mirjam also credits Blenheim registered nurse Wendy Diack with bringing the conference to Blenheim. “She has worked really hard to make this happen,” Mirjam says. The Women’s Health College is the professional nursing voice for women’s health and related issues. The college advocates for women in the formation of health policy and aims to provide nursing leadership to promote, support and advance nursing practice in relation to women’s health in New Zealand.

Weekend events a great success

By Bill McElhinney A fabulous weekend of food and fun – that was the feedback from organisers and participants who enjoyed the Feast Marlborough events on Thursday and Friday nights and the Saint Clair Vineyard half marathon on Saturday. Both events attracted record crowds and despite the overcast weather went off with scarcely a hitch. “We had 220 people in the ASB Theatre for the Thursday night gala feast, which showcased Marlborough talent as well as our wine and food,” Chris Shaw, one of the organisers for both events, says. “Feast Marlborough on Friday

night was a roaring success with many food stalls sold out before the night ended. “It’s a great showcase for Marlborough and many people have asked why we don’t have something like this in the CBD every week!” Celebrity chefs Michael Meredith and Al Brown were a hit and enjoyed the atmosphere and the feedback from the public. The Saint Clair Vineyard half marathon, a sell-out event once again, was also enjoyed by both spectators and participants. “We are so fortunate that we get such great support from the locals,” Chris says.

“People let us run through their properties, we have a great team of volunteers and we are also able to raise money for local causes as well as around $60,000 for Bowel Cancer NZ. “We’ve already had people asking us what date the event is scheduled for next year as they want to book to come back!” “It was fantastic to see so many locals and visitors enjoying our cuisine and local produce over the four days,” Mayor John Leggett says. “I was very impressed how professionally run everything was; it was really top class. “Congratulations to the organ-

The contractor, a 40-year-old man, was found dead on the farm on Welds Hill Rd at 1.45pm on Friday. Advisory group a voice for Marlborough’s rural folk By Bill McElhinney There’s still a lot to be done to help rural folk have their say in local affairs, high country farmer Bev Pitts says. Bev is the newly-elected chairwoman (“I’m not a chairman,” she says) of the Marlborough Rural Advisory Group. “We’ve never seen ourselves as a lobby group, such as Federated Farmers. We’re more a voice for rural folk to highlight issues affecting the community,” Bev says. T he Rural Advisor y Group was formed in 2015 and led by former Kaikoura National Party MP Colin King. Members represent other rural organisations and groups in the region, including REAP, Rural Women NZ, and Federated Farmers. “We meet to discuss rural issues and then we can take these issues to the Marlborough District Council,” Bev says. “We can achieve more as members of a group interacting with councillors, rather than having a seat around the council table. “Our aim is communication between the council,

Pelorus areas, but is still an issue in some areas,” Bev says. “Some people are still on dial-up.” Rates, roads, Civil Defence, and water are other issues the advisory group will tackle. “For the future we will need more focus on social media, a website and Facebook links to ensure increased feedback from Marlborough Rural Adviso- our members and assory Group chairwoman Bev ciated groups,” Bev says. “We also need a review Pitts. of rural ward representarural communities and restion before the next local idents of Marlborough. Keeping TEMPO By Megan Connolly Talented school-aged children from around Marlborough will be showcasing their musical abilities this Friday at the Wesley Centre at 7pm for TEMPO (Today’s Emerging Musicians Performing Onstage). Door entry is $3 per person (including performers) or $10 for a family. This year’s theme of the evening is New Zealand Music Night which ties in with NZ Music Month. Performers are encouraged to perform

something by a kiwi composer or something New Zealand themed. This year’s special guest artists are the Panoho family which marks their first performance at TEMPO as guest artists, performing mainly original songs written by Dad, Andrew. All five children have been regular performers since TEMPO began. The older girls will also bring along their music students to perform in the evening. Register online to perform.

Salon’s milestone By Celeste Alexander Blenheim couple Jenny and Murray Eyles are celebrating 25 successful years of business at Solutions ‘93 Ltd hair salon. It was after establishing their family that Jenny decided to focus on her hairdressing career with the support of Murray helping in the background. “I’m grateful to Murray for his support as I have dyslexia so I’m more of the ‘hands on’ side of the business,” she says. From day one, Jenny and Murray set out with the same focus they have today - caring for their clients. “I have clients who have been with me for 43 years and I’m regularly welcoming new clients who quickly become part of the Solutions ‘93 family,” Jenny says “When it comes to service it’s quite simple; it’s about giving the client your time, making them feel and look good when they walk out the door. We want our clients to feel comfortable, happy and relaxed while in our salon. “I can honestly say I love, and still have the passion for the hairdressing industry,” she says. “We also acknowledge that Wella NZ have been a supporter of us and our salon. “We are grateful to the staff that have supported us over the years, they have contributed to us celebrating our 25 successful years in business,” Jenny says. No additional taxes

Railway station a mess

Dear Ed, My wife and I are superannuitants. Our income is therefore $36,500 before tax and $32,000 after tax. Coincidentally, this equals our MP’s accommodation allowance. Our rates payable are $220 per month including GST, a tax upon a tax. Our outgoings for all insurances, car registration, power, maintenance and subscriptions adds up to $17,000 per annum including GST. Food, groceries, cleaning materials etc are $250 per week or $13,000 per annum including GST. Fuel is approximately $100 per month and this is taxed at almost 50 per cent, or $600 per annum. In total each year we have paid out at least $12,640 in direct and indirect taxes. We do have some savings still remaining in the bank earning 3.5 per cent interest which is, of course, also taxed. Therefore, if it is alright with our free spending government and local council we would like to inform them all that we would rather not pay even more taxes. Over the years we have done our bit. Brian Henstock Waikawa Bay

Dear Ed, Could something be done not only to clean up, but KEEP clean the Railway Station bus stop. Overflowing rubbish bins are normal and left for days. The place needs regular sweeping, water blasting etc. Council says Downer are responsible, but Downer says they are only doing the lawns etc. Not a good look for the hundreds that arrive on buses and the steam train! Gordon M. Blenheim Council responds: Thanks to Gordon for bringing this to our attention. From now on Council

Thanks, Sun staff

bins will be checked and emptied twice a day. The bus shelter and surrounding area will continue to be swept and cleaned once a day as is currently the case. Council is responsible for some of the bins at the railway station and bus stop area. The Wine Station supplies the wheelie bins that are located on the platform, which they manage and empty. Council will also ensure the bus shelter glass is cleaned once a month and any graffiti is removed as soon as possible. It is important to Council that the railway station is kept clean and tidy and leaves a good impression on those who use it.

Dear Ed, On behalf of the Marlborough Ulysses Club I would like to express our thanks for the publicity we have received from your newspaper. We very much appreciate the coverage we get for the two charity events we run each year and the individual articles of

local interest about some of our Ulysses members. A special thanks also to your reporter Celeste for all the effort she puts in to have our events published in your paper, along with some great photos. Kelvin Watson Coordinator, Marlborough Branch Ulysses Club of NZ Inc.

Bypass a no brainer Dear Ed, A truck bypass is, as the saying goes, a “no-brainer.” Other towns have bypasses or are getting them. Taupo’s bypass is a great example. Go in to Taupo and the retail sector is buzzing. Cambridge has a bypass and

one is being built for Hamilton. Travel behind trucks off the ferry down Grove Road and you’ll see the “no-brainer” is getting trucks around - not through Blenheim. Council can lobby and advocate instead of sitting limp waisted by. Local Driver Blenheim

We need a new bridge Dear Ed, I believe everyone in the community agrees, we need a new bridge. The issue is WHERE it should be. I personally agree with the Labour Government: put a stop to the madness of replacing the existing Grove Road bridge. To do so would be a criminal waste of taxpayers’ money when the existing bridge is adequate for local traffic. What is desperately needed is a bridge at the end of the eastern bypass to connect to the highway

at Riverlands. Get the trucks and through traffic out of Grove Road and Main Street. etc. The business community need not fear. Who calls into Blenheim when they have just spent four hours on the ferry, or are rushing to catch a ferry? Those that plan to come to Blenheim will still come, perhaps even more when there are fewer traffic issues. Colin Scott Blenheim

Locals artists to perform at concert

Sunny days in April By Bill McElhinney There were some sunny April days, five of them with more than 10 hours of sunshine, Marlborough Research Centre scientist Rob Agnew says. The average daily sunshine for April is 6.3 hours. However, there were also five days when no sunshine was recorded. In fact in the last three days of April no sunshine hours were recorded. The hottest day was 4 April with a maximum temperature of 25.4°C. The 188.0 hours of sunshine for April wasn’t as good as April 2016 when 238.3 hours of sunshine were recorded. Total rainfall for Blenheim from January to April 2018 is 367.6 mm. January and February rainfall totals were well above average whereas March and April totals have been close to average.

Soil moisture for the four months January to April 2018 was above average. This is by far the wettest that the topsoil has been in the 16 years 2003 to 2018, Rob says, which helps to explain why Marlborough has been so green so far in 2018, with abundant grass growth. Two ground frosts were recorded during April, on the 11th and 12th. In contrast no ground frost were recorded in April last year. There were a further five cold mornings during April when the ground temperature was between 0 and -1.0°C, but not recorded as a ground frost. Only temperatures below -1.0 classify as ground frosts. The coldest temperatures were recorded on the morning of April 12, with a grass minimum (ground frost) of -3.3°C and an air minimum of +0.3°C.

By Megan Connolly St Andrews Church will host a concert on Sunday May 27 from 2pm to 4pm showcasing some of the incredible talents from Marlborough and beyond. Some of the artists performing are pianist Marsha Stringer, soprano Olivia Sheat and Lois Johnston, and Marlborough Girls’ College choir Ovation, among many others. The event has been running successfully for 11 years, according to Barry Stringer, an organiser of the event. “The acoustics are good at St Andrew’s church and it’s a very nice intimate space,” Barry says. Tickets can be purchased at the door for The Aphra Trio will perform at St Andrew’s concert this year. Lissa $10 on the day. Children are free to enter. Cowie, Marsha Stringer, Anna Maitland.

Enjoying and getting fit Robyn Bennett talks with dance teacher Corinne McBride about Nia.

Corinne McBride starts the day catching the morning sun streaming in through her dance studio windows. “I dance every morning for an hour, practicing the next routine I will teach,” she says. Corinne teaches Nia (pronounced nee-a), which is a combination of martial, dancing and healing arts. “Nia is low impact and is all about enjoying yourself and getting fit. “At the end of a session you should feel as though you’ve moved, but not have sore muscles,” Corinne says. Classes begin with a focus and an intent eg. there is a focus on upper extremities or on the joy of moving with the intent to find ease, efficiency and pleasure. “Nia is good for people who have fallen out of love with their body, who want to get their confidence back, or after pregnancy, during menopause, depression, or anyone going through something like a divorce. “It also helps the body to detoxify and become more agile and stronger. “The beauty of Nia is that it’s not all structured; there is some free dancing involved too,” Corinne says. “If a dance move isn’t working for you then you can adapt it to suit your own CUSTOMER HOUSTON MOTORS BLENHEIM PUBLISHING 10/08/17 body.” PLEASE APP SALES REP SADLINGTON PUBLICATION MARLBOROUGH MIDWEEK Nia was started in the 1980s in California AS POSSIB where it had a big ADVERTISING following. Keep it LOCAL Vintners Room Restaurant

Vintners Room Restaurant in Blenheim provides a fine dining experience complete with the finest hand-picked Marlborough wine selection. Open seven nights a week from 5pm (over winter), we are the perfect location to compliment the Marlborough cuisine and wine experience.

Habit Blenheim Would you like peace of mind that your home is structurally sound? The home and building inspection team at Habit Blenheim can make this a reality. The Marlborough franchise has been owned and operated by Rob and Correna Blick for six years. Rob, a local builder, felt that Habit would be a good tie in with his existing business and went on to hire Andy Lucas to carry out the inspections. Andy also has a building background, meaning that they are both qualified, experienced and highly professional. “It’s a good idea to have an inspection done... you wouldn’t know otherwise if you had moisture behind walls, the wrong nails in the roof or cracks in foundations. It’s like having a warrant of fitness done on your home,” Correna says. “Our reports will identify issues that may not be apparent when you initially view a property. “Let us give you peace of mind by booking your property inspection with us today.”

Nick James Excavations Nick James Excavations has become a well-known name when it comes to machinery hire. Nick added to his fleet with the arrival of two 1.8 tonne JCB diggers which are now available for hire, in addition to six diggers, three dump trucks and a roller and a seven tonne truck capable of carrying a digger and materials. He also has equipment available including a hedge cutter attachment with adjustable swivel bracket and a soil screening bucket ideal for top soil, waste compost and recycling. “The screening bucket is the main piece of machinery I use for filling irrigation trenches over pipe work. “You don’t want rocks being thrown over your pipes so to avoid damage this screen is effective,” he says. Installing, removing, trimming and loading for all types of work can be easy with the right equipment hired from Nick James Excavations. For more information contact Nick or view his website for a full list of services and equipment.

Local film festival in Renwick Two years after its successful debut, the Renwick documentary Film Festival is on again this month. Every Thursday through May, starting May 10, a selection of films will screen at the Renwick Anglican Church Hall on High Street. Paul Davidson, who directed many of the productions, says that this year’s selection is a diverse mix of stories from Marlborough, Wellington and Queensland which audiences are sure to find interesting. “The Marlborough stories are great,” Paul says. The local vicar, Rev Joe Keigh-

ley, says the film festival is one of the parish’s important fundraising events, but its main success is in the church providing another community activity making use of its facilities. “I can guarantee an excellent night out for the next four Thursdays. “Our church ladies are even providing free tea and biscuits to get the evening started, and you don’t get that at the usual cinema!” Joe Says. The festival starts at 7pm this Thursday and runs for four successive Thursdays through May. Admission is just $10 per person, payable at the door.

Celebrate your grandparents, win them some great prizes.

Are your grandparents the unsung heroes of your family? Have they been ‘extraordinary’ in their love and support or perhaps they have done something for your family that is worthy of recognition? If so the Sun Newspaper would like to hear from you! Grandparents play such a vital role within a family and deserve to be celebrated. So let’s celebrate Marlborough’s most wonderful grandparents by nominating them for the Sun’s ‘Grandparents of the Year’ competition. Simply tell us why you think your grandparents should be nominated for this competition in no more than 200 words and send us a photograph.

You can do this by emailing celeste@blenheimsun.co.nz or by dropping the letter and photograph into the Sun office at 72 High Street, Blenheim. Nominations will be received for the month of May before a winning letter is selected. There are some amazing prizes for the ‘Grandparents of the Year’ and a selection of letters will be published early June.

YOUR HOUSE YOUR CASTLE Questions to ask your builder Selecting the right builder is a key step in the journey that leads to your dream home. Asking builders the questions below will help you choose the right builder to create your new home —and give you confidence in your choice. • How many years have you been in business? How many homes have you built? • Are you licensed (where required) and insured? • How do you compare yourself to other builders? What are the most important benefits of the homes you build? • What type of warranty do you offer? • Can you give me references from prior home buyers? Do you build model homes I can tour? If not, can you help me make an appointment to see a home you built for another customer? • What are the major energy-saving features of homes you build? • Do you build only from home plans you supply? Colour trends for 2018 and beyond Trends often reflect the times in which we live. When the world seems a mad, bad place or we feel sensory overload from our busy bright lives, we seek safe, nurturing spaces at home. Misty and muted - Seek sanctuary with hushed tones. Soft and simple, these sanctuary colours are a hushed environment to retreat to and embark on mindful living. The colours are still soft but where there might have been just pale grey and cool white, there are now a range of soft muddied pastels. Try these paint colours: Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Soothe and Resene Inside Back.

Soft and simple tones create a hushed environment to retreat to.

Cocooned - Retreat to your safe haven with dark tones. Deep light-absorbing colours offer cave-like cocoons to hide in when the world gets too scary. These deep charcoals, moody blues and

dense greens ground us but also inject a sense of daring at using such bold tones. Try deep grey, blue and black paint colours, such as Resene Nocturnal, Resene Dark Side and Resene Nero.

Harrier club events The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk leaving from the clubrooms on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets at 6pm on Thursday. Reflector gear is compulsory. Joggers and walkers regardless of ability are welcome. On Saturday there is a run/walk at Pelorus. This is the first organized opportunity to meet up with Nelson clubs to either be competitive or just go out and enjoy the delights of Pelorus surroundings. We know our Nelson friends are making a great effort to travel so we need as many club members as possible to attend. Meet at Pelorus Bridge car park. Look for the harrier sign. A car pool leaves Redwoodtown Community Hall at 12.30pm. Let’s make this happen. Members and non -members welcome. Bring something to share for afternoon tea post run.
