By Celeste Alexander Three-year-old Carter Illingworth was the youngest competitor at the Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards held in Blenheim at the weekend. Little he might be, but he still managed to win in the categories of Tiny Tots and Highest Scoring Under 10.

He was joined by 53 other competitors from around the country who took to the stage at ASB Theatre to compete in a range of categories and ultimately the overall winning titles.

Organisers say it was a fantastic weekend which kicked off with a showcase concert on Friday night followed by auditions, a rock and roll competition and finished with the finals on Sunday.

Aroha wins at country music awards Continued from page 1 While each of the 23 sections had awards for the winners and runners up, there were three overall winners named in the senior, intermediate and junior categories.

Aroha Williams of Pegasus was crowned the overall senior winner which came as a ‘total shock’, she says.

“I was stunned and will probably continue to be stunned for a while.”

Aroha has been involved in country music since the age of six, travelling with her parents who themselves would compete at competitions all over the country.

She has been entering the

Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards since 1994 and has placed as runner up over the years.

“How does the saying go?

Always the bridesmaid and never the bride,” she laughs.

“I entered five categories and won all five... it was fantastic and I had a blast.”

One of her performances included a more traditional style singing ‘River of Memories’, the version performed by Cynthia Clawson.

“I felt great after each performance and the band was absolutely fantastic,” she says.

Asked how she felt when her name was called, Aroha says ‘shocked’.

“I was totally shocked. I didn’t think I personally would have won... I thought my duo partner and I would win as we did a flawless job together. But it was a very special moment and I had my partner and family cheering me on.

“I’m looking forward to coming back as guest artist next year,” she says.

Methane increase could be sold

By Cathie Bell Holes are being driven into the ground at the Bluegums landfill as part of a venture which could see the site used to generate electricity.

Another 10 holes are being drilled this week, and gas collection piping installed, doubling the collection of methane at the Taylor Pass site.

Council solid waste manager Alec McNeil says the gas collected now is burnt in an enclosed flare, but next year he hopes to be able to have options to take the gas to market, potentially organising a way to use the gas to generate electricity for sale.

Methane gas is created by bacteria which are breaking down the buried rubbish at the landfill, sometimes piles which can be up to 20 metres deep.

and pipes are inserted, forming a network taking the gas to a collection point where the flare is.

Alec says about 300 cubic metres of gas is collected now and he hopes more than 400 cubic metres will be consistently collected by the end of this year.

The extension of the methane gas collection will cost about $250,000, with the hole-drilling costing about $100,000 of that.

The Bluegums landfill takes up about 16 hectares of the 64 hectare site.

It is planned to be a 13-stage process, and the council is up to stage seven now.

While the landfill is out of sight, out of mind for many in Marlborough, Alec is clear it supports our way of life.

“It would be great if we didn’t need this, we’re getting better but there is still a long way to go.”

Queen’s letter creates hype at Ashwood

By Celeste Alexander It’s not often that a letter arriving in the mail causes smiles, laughter and tears but one that arrived at Ashwood Park Retirement Village last Friday did just that.

A letter arrived from Buckingham Palace addressed to a group of residents, thanking them for a message and photograph they sent before Christmas.

It was part of a fun project undertaken by Joan Tinkler, Silvia Millard, Rene Brodie, Pat Martella, May Harris and Jessie Clark, who created a picture of Queen Elizabeth using a montage of stamps.

The stamps were donated by the Blenheim Stamp Association.

A photograph of the residents with the montage along with a letter they wrote together were mailed last November.

At first the letter was sent via track and trace and made it all the way to Buckingham Palace, but for reasons unknown it was refused.

After a week of not hearing anything they decided to send another via normal mail, then patiently waited for a reply.

Diversional therapist Sharon Ealand, who came up with the idea, said an official letter arrived last Friday written on behalf of the Queen by her lady in waiting, Lady Elizabeth Leeming which caused a great deal of excitement.

The letter said ‘Her Majesty was very touched to know of the collage which you recently created in her honour and deeply appreciated the warm sentiments you have expressed in your message’.

“When it was handed to me I ran down the hall with the letter, tears streaming down my face to show the ladies. It was so exciting,” she says.

May Harris says they were also thrilled to receive the letter which had all of their names printed on the envelope.

“It got a lot of old ladies very excited,” she laughs.

Wither Hills arson patrols Police are making ‘overt patrols’ near the Wither Hills farm park and riverbanks around Blenheim in an effort to stop potential arsonists during dry summer weather.

There is a total fire ban in Marlborough at the moment, and the police posted online they are continuing to patrol the ‘very vulnerable areas to fires’ near Blenheim, in response to fires lit by arsonists in the past.

Earthquakes spark more work with government

By Cathie Bell Marlborough is in a better place than many regions to deal with natural disasters, the council says.

Civil Defence Minister Kris Faafoi has released a report into how New Zealand responds to natural disasters and emergencies and will meet key groups, including councils, to discuss its recommendations.

Marlborough made a submission on the report, and council spokesman Glyn

will work with the Government to implement recommendations it decides to take forward.

“The report recognises the need for greater professionalisation in the sector, and a national structure that better supports mobile teams who can deploy into regional emergencies quickly.

“Marlborough is fortunate in being a unitary authority and has a much simpler decision-making

The report recommends setting up a new emergency management agency, among other things.

Kris says the report will be carefully considered as he meets with, local authorities, iwi and other groups over the next few months.

Work starts tomorrow to repair the Elizabeth Street footbridge, with work being done between 7am and 7pm and the bridge will reopen at night.

The Marlborough District Council says the work will start on Thursday and is expected to be completed by Thursday 1 February.

In the event of bad weather or other unforeseen circumstances, the work will be postponed until the next suitable day.

The bridge, water main and a nearby property were damaged in the November 2016 earthquake.

Rai Saddle work will make the road safer

By Bill McElhinney Continuing road works on the Rai Saddle will improve safety on a crash-prone section of State Highway 6.

A section of the saddle is being altered to modify bends in the road and allow for a more consistent speed.

The $6.6 million earthwork project realigning the curves started in September last year and is expected to be completed by May. The winding nature of the road and the changes in speed limit are contributing factors to crashes, New Zealand Transport Agency senior project manager Andrew Adams says.

Between 2005 to 2015 there were 25 notified crashes on the Rai Saddle, including five serious crashes and 11 minor injury crashes.

A series of five curves with mostly 65kmh limits will be reduced to four curves with the speed increased to between 75kmh and 85kmh.

“However, people should be aware that this work is highly weather-dependent and progress has been delayed with the recent wet weather,” Andrew says.

“Temporary road realignments have been completed and bulk earthworks are due for completion early April.

“Preliminary roading sections are under construction and final sealing of the complete job is due by the end of May. “Thanks to all drivers who are taking care around our crews and following temporary speed restrictions while travelling along the highway,” Andrew says.

The Rai Saddle improvements are part of a bigger plan by NZTA to make a safe road between Blenheim to Nelson which would possibly include the Whangamoa Saddle.

By Cathie Bell The Government is to buy more state houses in Marlborough, Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford says.

In response to questions from The Sun about housing, and in light of comments by community advocate Janette Walker, Phil says the Coalition Government understands the strain the housing crisis is putting on many families and older people, especially in the Marlborough region which was one of the hardest hit areas in the country and has had additional stress caused by the 2016 earthquakes.

Housing New Zealand is looking at its future plans for developing more state housing in Marlborough in response to the increased demand and is working with the Ministry of Social Development on how they can meet this demand, he says.

“We recognise the efforts of local residents such as Janette Walker who has been an outspoken advocate for locals who have borne the brunt of the housing crisis.”

Housing and Urban Development Minister Phil Twyford.

A Ministry of Social Development spokesperson says the ministry wants to have 465 public housing places in the Marlborough district by June 2020.

“At the moment we have 411.”

This is in addition to other accommodation options such as private rental and boarding arrangements.

At the end of September 2017, there were 67 applications from Marlborough on the Housing Register, the spokesperson says.

There are 21 transitional housing places available in the Marlborough district,

and the ministry wants to lift this to 38.

Transitional housing provides short-term housing for people with an immediate housing need while support is put in place to transition them into sustainable housing on a long-term basis.

Places are managed by specialist emergency housing providers who are skilled in providing a range of social and tenancy-related support.

The spokesperson says if transitional housing is full, special needs grants can be paid to meet the cost of short-term accommodation, and in the three months to September last year, Work and Income’s Blenheim Service Centre paid 310 grants worth $219,837.

“We know that finding the right property in the right place can be really tough, especially for families on fixed incomes who may not be able to access other long term housing options.

“We encourage anyone who has a housing concern, and has not yet spoken to us about it, to contact Work and Income on 0800 559 009.”

Travelling bear finds friends in Blenheim

By Bill McElhinney Vin Mckenzie and Bear have come to Blenheim all the way from the United Kingdom.

Vin, who worked as a nurse with special needs children, comes from Nottingham, home of the legendary Robin Hood.

There she is involved with Age UK, a registered charity providing services and support to people in later life.

“It’s similar to Age Concern in New Zealand,” Vin says.

“We visit people who are lonely or isolated and provide a range of services for older people.”

Vin has come to Blenheim before to visit her daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Nick Raynor. She also has a son in Australia.

But this time she has a special travel companion – Bear.

The little teddy has his own passport in which Vin logs his travels, and so far the pair has clocked up over 22,000 kilometres.

“It started as a bit of fun back in the UK,” Vin says.

“Age UK is celebrating 75 years and our branch had these four little bears which we wanted to give to our members who were going away on travels.

“The idea is to see which bear travels the most miles. By the time I get home we’ll have done over 32,000km.”

Vin has also made a special friend in Blenheim, Monica Nott.

“I met Vin through St Mary’s Catholic Church,” Monica says.

“She contacted the parish office about getting to Mass and they put her in touch with me.

“We’ve formed a special friendship.”

“I’ve met so many lovely people here,” Vin says.

“When I get home Bear will go on display.

I’m looking forward to seeing how his trip stacks up with the others.”

‘Look after your catch’ says Fish & Game

By Bill McElhinney With the summer fishing season now underway, Fish & Game wants to educate anglers on how to properly look after trout they catch.

Proper handling of trout is a good way to ensure a trout is fit for the table and for anglers to “play their part” in sustaining fish stocks, Fish & Game communications manager Don Rood says.

“Anglers need to be aware that how they handle any trout they catch is critical if the fish is to thrive after release,” Don says.

“It doesn’t matter if you are selectively harvesting one for a feed or releasing good fish so they can breed, you want them to be in the best possible condition.

“We’re not urging anglers to release every

trout, but encouraging them to look after them all,” Don says.

Some practices to avoid are fighting a trout for too long, using too light gear, dragging trout onto the rocks or boat deck and not taking enough care removing hooks.

Trout make excellent eating, Don says, so if you are keeping them for the table, make the decision and kill them quickly and humanely.

“You don’t have to apologise for selectively taking fish for the table.

“Looking after the fish you catch is not only better for the health of our trout populations and the future of the fishery, but also your reputation as a provider of good quality food for family and friends,” Don says.

More on the roundabout Dear Ed, Diesel Dan (Sun 17th) has made a point about the Spring Creek roundabout, but I can add another fact of poor design.

Coming from Blenheim to go to Ferry Road, there is a new electronic sign, that I was lucky enough to see as I approached Spring Creek.

It shows a train in lights, and a notice to use the layby if you need to go to Ferry Road.

Now, no one except those that have watched the development of this folly, will have a clue as to what is meant by the layby, so any stranger to the area will still attempt to go around towards Ferry Road, and stop at the crossing, causing southbound traffic to stop.

I turned left into Raupara Road as I wanted to enter the Four Square area. Two campervans in convoy wanted to go from Raupara Road straight through to Ferry Road.

They proceeded to do so, and T HE

had to stop at the crossing for the train.

All northbound traffic was held up, until the train had passed, and the campervans had moved on to Ferry Road.

There is no sign telling traffic to stay in Raupara Road until the crossing is clear, So the electronic sign opposite the dairy is a waste of money really.

Another point, this roundabout was supposed to make it safer at the intersection.

Southbound traffic can approach it at 70 kmph, and can go through it at almost the same speed, as the road alignment is not conducive to slowing them down, unlike the entry from Blenheim, and Raupara Road.

Perhaps someone will redesign this roundabout one day, and claim it is in the interests of safety.

Cricket fan Dear Ed, The New Zealand cricketers did well to win that last ODI match at the Basin Reserve in Wellington.

As a TV onlooker, I enjoy watching cricket and the New Zealand bowlers did well overall but it was a concern to note that they gifted the opposition 18

wides as extras which is really three full overs.

It’s like giving opponents free points by serving double faults in tennis.

Two or three wides might be ok, but 18 is not, in my view.

Who did it?

Dear Ed, I noticed the letter of “Kiwi” concerned about the writing on the new Picton library where some Maori words presumably proclaiming it is the Picton Library, boldly appear, dwarfing the English title underneath.

Now what goes on here?

I don’t mind Maori language as long as some one translates for me.

Often they don’t translate.

Several years ago, I attended a fisheries meeting at Grovetown where the local iwi spoke for 20 minutes in Maori, then left, leaving most attendees bemused and

bewildered. That was downright bad manners.

But now I notice a lovely little stream just out of Renwick has gone - well in name.

I refer to Gibson’s Creek.

I peered over the bridge, the water’s flowing as before but it’s a different stream - Ruakanakana Stream.

No mention of Gibson’s Creek.

Why? Who did it?

Isn’t European heritage important too?

‘Miserable’ MDC Dear Ed, I slipped a 10 cent coin into the CBD parking meter and was startled to see not four minutes register but three minutes.

It appears in a furtive move the council have raised parking meter fees.

What use is three minutes?

What is council doing to the CBD? When the new Redwoodtown shops come on stream, shoppers will have no parking meters.

Why is MDC so miserable?

Blenheim rates are high, apparently comparable with Queenstown and Merivale in Christchurch. Why does MDC take people for fools?

We can see three minutes is less than four minutes.

Me thinks MDC needs to look at its internal expenditure and why rates are so high comparably. It needs to look at its hamfisted PR. An irksome aspect is the way MDC surreptitiously goes about it.

Landcorp keen on Molesworth

By Cathie Bell Landcorp would like to keep farming at Molesworth, the stateowned farmer says.

The Department of Conservation is asking people to have their say on the current and future management of Molesworth Station through an online survey, which closes at the end of March.

The survey can be done through the department’s website.

It is currently managed as a working high-country station through a farming lease and grazing licence

to Landcorp. The farming lease expires in 2020.

Landcorp head of communications Simon King says Landcorp has been farming Molesworth since the 1950s.

“We have a good relationship with DoC and we work via the Molesworth Steering Committee to ensure the interests of all parties involved in the management of this iconic station are preserved and enhanced.”

Simon says the lease renewal in 2020 is an appropriate time for DoC to talk to interested stakeholders about what the future use and operation of Molesworth will

More laughs to be had at Havelock

The busy Havelock Theatre Company are staging another of their popular comedy productions, this one a send-up of the Agatha Christie murder mystery genre.

Did the butler do it? Or the maid? Who is trying to get their hands on the millions left in the will of Checkmate Manor magnate Sir Reginald Bishop?

The play revolves around “Murder at Checkmate Manor,” supposedly being staged by the fictional Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society.

It is set in the drawing room of Checkmate Manor, where the family has gathered for the reading of the will of the late Sir Reginald.

However, someone else has designs on the Checkmate millions, and will stop at nothing to get them. A string of grisly murders ensues, where everyone has a motive and everyone is a suspect in a classic whodunit farce.

But the fictional Farnsdale Townswomen’s attempt to put on the play quickly turns to a

disaster, and this is where the laughs are.

Everything that can go wrong probably will! The actors fluff their lines, the scenery falls over, the sound and lighting cues go awry.

As the valiant dramatic society members stumble on, they keep the audience in stitches.

“It’s a challenging play,” says Bruce Weston, who is producing the show with Gillian Edwards.

“The cast of nine have a number of roles to play and costume changes to make. We’ve been rehearsing since about a month before Christmas.

“But the play is so cleverly written that it all fits together so well.

“We get a lot of visitors to Havelock and the Sounds at this time of the year, so we always try to stage something that will get a few laughs!”

“Murder at Checkmate Manor” has its gala opening tonight at 8pm in the Havelock Town Hall.

Other performances are at 8pm on Thursday, Friday, Saturday, a matinee at 4pm on Sunday and Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday next week.

Education Act soon for fees-free study With almost 168,000 students receiving their preliminary NCEA results last week, the Tertiary Education Commission (TEC) is reminding everyone considering tertiary education in 2018 to check their eligibility for Fees Free.

TEC’s chief executive, Tim Fowler says it’s not too late for people to take up the opportunity of fees-free study in 2018, but those who are thinking about it need to act soon.

“The TEC is running a short information campaign about fees-free education. The aim of the campaign is to make sure those considering tertiary level study for the first time are well informed about Fees Free so they can make the best decisions about their future learning.

“But people will need to act soon to ensure their Fees Free eligibility is processed in time

to complete enrolment for many qualifications and courses starting in 2018. I recommend people visit FeesFree.govt.nz for full details.

“Broadly, if you’re a New Zealander who finished school in 2017, or if you will finish school during 2018, you qualify for a year of fees-free provider-based tertiary education or two years of industry training in 2018.

“And, Fees Free is an opportunity for adults as well as school leavers. So if you’re not a recent school leaver, but you’ve done less than half a year of tertiary education or training (including tertiary study overseas), you may also qualify.

“Fees Free covers industry training and apprenticeships, as well as qualifications and courses run by universities, wananga, polytechnics and private training establishments,” he says.

Education Back to school The inevitable last minutes of summer are ticking away.

The countdown has begun for back-toschool once again.

To help parents and students start the school year strong, here are some tips for parents and students to keep in mind as summer winds down and the school year begins.

Children need to ease back into their school routine rather than having a sudden change their first day of school.

Re-introduce a school year bedtime routine that will make waking up on that first day a lot easier.

During the holidays kids tend to grab a snack several times during the day.

Parents can start reminding students to get back into a three-meal-a-day schedule in order to regulate their system into the back-to-school mode.

Create a family calendar Time management is tricky for everyone. Having major deadlines, due dates,

events and extracurricular activities in one place helps kids visualize their week, manage their time and stay on track.

Get organised Keeping notes, projects and reading materials in logical order helps students find what they need right away.

Concentrate Staying focused is easier for some kids than others.

Students need to do their best to avoid distractions in class. This means keeping cell phones tucked away and being vocal if a chatty classmate is too distracting.

Speak up Students often can get tripped up by homework or test instructions. Students should know it’s OK to speak up if they don’t understand testing or homework directions. Students should also listen carefully and spend plenty of time reading directions.

Babies Building Blocks coming to Spring Creek Playcentre The popular Babies Building Blocks Program held previously at other Marlborough Playcentres, will be held at Spring Creek Playcentre from February 2018.

Every Wednesday, the ten week course, for six-12month old babies and their parents/caregivers, will allow adults and children to get together each week, sharing ideas, and playing and learning alongside each other.

The course will offer a chance to experience what Playcentre is like, course facilitator Poz Poswillo says.

“Playcentre is run by families for families. Parents learn from each other in a supportive environment.

The Babies Building Blocks course is for all parents, whether younger, older, ‘first timers’ or those with older siblings.

find it helpful to ask questions. Both babies and adults also make friends along the way.

“We always welcome people who want to find out more,” she says.

One parent who attended the course says topics covered were ‘relevant to my baby’s developmental stages’.

“I felt like I learned valuable and useful parenting skills. The supportive and caring environment

was fantastic.

“My daughter loved the sandpit, swings and the heuristic play.

Most of all she loved watching the other children. She gained confidence and made friends” a parent commented about her child at the conclusion of the course.”

Babies Building Blocks course runs weekly from Wednesday February 7 to April 11 from 9.30am –11.45am.

The 10 week course costs $20 and has limited spaces. Spring Creek Playcentre is located next to Spring Creek School.

Kids splash out at Friday Funday

By Bill McElhinney There was heaps of fun in the sun at Redwoodtown School on Friday as the school parents kicked off the first of three Friday Fundays.

“We’re not doing a gala – we think people are galad-out,” parent organiser Deedee Bancroft says.

“I used to organise water fun days for the Marlborough Youth Trust, and suggested it for the school.

“The parents got on board and decided it would be a great event and the whole Redwoodtown community could come.”

For a gold coin donation, those attending can enjoy a variety of water-based activities, zorb balls, and buy food and drink.

“We organised a water slide at the end of the term as a reward for those pupils who had earned enough points through a good behaviour programme,” Deedee says.

The fundays are being held every Friday in the January holiday break.

“It’s something different,” Deedee says.

“It’s for all ages, so family and friends can come along. There’s a coffee cart and a shade area where parents can relax while the kids have a ball.”

Speed skaters score medals in Timaru

By Bill McElhinney Four young Blenheim skaters did well at the national speed skating championships held in Timaru recently.

“There was some fantastic racing,” Blenheim Roller Skating Club spokesperson Roxanne Green says.

“Brook Pontague, seven, and Harper Smith, seven, competed in the primary grade. Molly Stanton, 10, and Erin Green, 11, competed in the juvenile grade. Erin is in her last year as a juvenile and Molly has one more year in this grade.

“Erin won silver in the 200m and 300m time trails and gold in the 500m and 1000m road track event,” Roxanne says.

“In the flat track event on the indoor wooden floor Erin won gold in the 300m time trial, 400m race, 800m race and 1500m race.

“On the fifth day Erin competed in a half marathon and won the aggregate award for most points over the four days.”

Erin was selected for the national team to skate in the Oceania competition to be held in Timaru at the end of March.

Harper won two silver medals in the 400m and the 800m races on the flat track.

“This is the first time the other three girls have competed in the nationals, so was a big learning curve for them,” Roxanne says. “They did well with, all three recording personal bests in the time trials.”

A week later four girls competed in the Tour of Timaru, with Harper getting second out of 11 skaters in novice grade.

“Lillie Pontague did well in her races to get 8th out of 15 skaters several times,” Roxanne says.

“Erin went against all the top skaters from the junior and senior grades. She did well to keep up, but the experience of the older skaters won through.

It was good experience for her.”
