By Celeste Alexander Marlborough Riding for the Disabled funding coordinator Barb Sutton has been brainstorming new ways to raise much needed funds for the organisation since taking up her position earlier this year.

Being a people person, she decided to go ‘cold-calling’ and ventured into the ANZ Blenheim branch to speak staff about what RDA does and ask for sponsorship.

She immediately struck a chord with some of the staff who encouraged her to apply for funding via the ANZ New Zealand Staff Foundation.

The foundation has over 2000 staff contributing regular amounts from their after tax salaries and wages, which is then matched dollar for dollar by ANZ.

Since inception in 2000, the ANZ New Zealand Staff Foundation has distributed over $4 million in community grants to over 550 charities and community projects nationwide.

There is a high volume of organisations applying, so when Barb found out she had been successful with her application she was ‘thrilled’.

“To be honest I didn’t think I had got the application in on time... I had only minutes to spare before the cut-off.

So when I got the phone call to say we were successful I was surprised but very happy,” she says.

Marlborough RDA was given $5000 by the Foundation, and staff from the Blenheim branch visited last Wednesday to take a tour and learn more about what the RDA does.

Man’s body found Police have referred the death of Marlborough man Bert James Kuiti, 38, to the coroner after his body was found near a car park at the end of the Maungatapu Road, in the Pelorus area, on Sunday.

A search for Bert was started after he was reported missing by his family on November 18.

The car he was last seen driving, a green Holden Vectra, was found crashed in the area last Sunday.

At the top of Isla’s list is a pair of roller skates.

Isla, five, also added to her letter to Santa: “Wishing you Santa a nice holiday”.

Riley, seven, says his favourite thing about Christmas is “seeing lots of family and having a good time”.

At the top of Riley’s list is a Nerf Nitro.

Isla says her favourite thing about Christmas is, “We get to see family and get a gift from Santa”.

Christmas for their family is about giving, their mother, Claire, says.

“It’s not a religious event, but instead it’s a family thing. And we encourage the children to show kindness.”

One way they will be doing this is having Isla and Riley write letters to some elderly people.

The letters will be dropped off anonymously in letter boxes around Renwick Kids write the cutest things to Santa, NZ Post spokesperson Tina Morgan says.

Letters in the past have had long lists of presents with short disclaimers.

“One child wrote: “Santa, you can choose how many things I am allowed on this list, and my mum says I might not get everything I ask for.”

Some children are time conscious.

“I’m sending this early.

“I just want to get most of the things on my list before you run out of them,” one wrote last year.

Others thanked Santa for last year’s presents and asked after Mr and Mrs Claus.

“Thank you for my presents last year. How is everyone in the North Pole? I am working really hard at school.”

Another said; “To Santa, hope Rudolph hasn’t been naughty and how has the naughty and nice list been going? Am I on the good list or bad list?”

There’s usually a bit of a wheels theme in the present requests with remote control cars, monster trucks, bikes and scooters all featuring highly.

Electronic toys and devices are popular, including tablets, gaming consoles and phones.

Pets also feature on the wish lists, including requests for a monkey, a penguin and a pony - though it has to be a pony that doesn’t kick.

Santa will be busy, as nine out of 10 children who’ve written in past years say they’ve been nice, and not naughty!

The InterCity bus service between Picton and Christchurch will resume from December 18 onwards.

By Celeste Alexander A Life Flight helicopter was the star of the show at Sunday’s Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough Community Day, which raised $15,933.

The helicopter was displayed for people to look through while staff and pilots were on hand to chat. Local emergency services, St John, Police and the Blenheim Fire Brigade also came along with their vehicles.

Children of all ages took the opportunity to look through the helicopter, fire appliance and ambulances and judging by their smiles, it was greatly enjoyed.

Mitre 10 Mega Marlborough marketing coordinator Gena Birtles was behind the idea

to hold the event and says it was ‘absolutely fantastic’.

“We are incredibly proud to be partnered with Life Flight and to put funding into the helicopter and air ambulance services, and this was just another way for us to fundraise for them.

“The response was extremely positive and actually overwhelming with the thousands that turned out to support the day, so I want to thank the community for its support,” she says.

The boys from David James Tree Services were busy last week stringing up Christmas lights in the Blenheim CBD and Seymour Square.

“This is no problem,” arborist Jason Kingi says as he watches Matt Dickson and Parker Havens work a hydraulic hoist to lift them to the top of a 20 metre tree.

“We’re arborists; we’re used to climbing up trees.

“Most times we do it with just a rope and a harness as we prune, tidy up and chop down trees.”

Some of the trees the team tackle are twice the height of the one on the square.

“Some big poplars are up to 40 metres high,” Jason says.

“Tackling them is more of a challenge.”

Matt and Parker were installing LED rope lights on the Seymour Square tree.

They will be attached to a programmer and will display various colour patterns in the evenings over the holiday period.

“The LED lights are great,” says Jason.

“It used to be strings of coloured bulbs, which Jason Kingi keeps an eye on his colwere always getting damaged and blown out, leagues as they string lights on the tree especially in a gusty nor wester.” in Seymour Square.

Dear Ed, The release of trout by Fish and Game is as intelligent as releasing stoats and possums into the bush.

Several species of native fish having become extinct from predation by these noxious, imported organisms.

Despite rate-payers graciously permitting Fish and Game members to use the freshwater systems without tariff in pursuance of their ecologically disastrous activities for over a hundred years, Fish and Game demonstrate their gratitude by prosecuting the

public with gusto for infringements of their precious, stupid regulations.

It is time for councils throughout New Zealand to impose significant fees, to be added to fishing licenses, retrospectively if possible, for use of the public’s fresh-water resources.

The revenue gathered maybe employed to enhance habitat suitable for the regeneration of native species while eradicating trout.

Dear Ed, It has gone ominously quiet about the controversial moving of district nurses from their purpose-built facility at Wairau Hospital to the health hub at Queen Street.

I have no confidence the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board are going to handle this any better than they have the changeover of homecare contracts, which is already leaving vulnerable people upset and uncomfortable in their own homes.

It was horrifying to read in The Sun about the 96

year-old lady whose regular routine has been disrupted because her new carer doesn’t have the time to spend with her the way the previous one did.

No wonder she was upset and contacting community advocate Jean Wilson.

It is time the district health board moved away from its penny-pinching attitude to one of real care for its patients and listened to what we have to say.

Maybe this new government will help bring about a change in attitude?

Earthquake warning Dear Ed, I attended the public meeting on earthquakes held in Blenheim earlier this month and I was well-impressed with the answers by GNS Science’s principal scientist Kelvin Berryman on being as prepared as possible.

The Hospice Shop in Redwoodtown has launched an initiative to make fabric bags out of pillowcases and recycled material which will be used instead of plastic bags, and called ‘Boomerang Bags’.

Its unusual name means these bags will be given to customers, then it’s hoped they will then return the bags to the shop or reuse them for their next purchase, ‘like a boomerang,’ manager Christine Law says.

The idea began when Christine’s sister-in-law who lives in Australia shared a link to a website where these boomerang bags had been successfully launched.

Matt van der Spuy.

Matt van der Spuy is enjoying making good wine in China, he tells Cathie Bell.

Seven New Zealand winemakers took part in the second international winemakers challenge in Ningxia, in China, six of them from Marlborough.

Matt van der Spuy is one of the two Marlborough winemakers who won a silver medal for his efforts.

The wines they made were reds, using cabernet sauvignon, merlot, and cabernet gernischift, which is also known as carmenere in Chile.

As the client WM at SCVL and working closely with the multiple award winning brand ‘Rapaura Springs’ Matt is used to cool climate wines.

He says the wine competition was amazing.

He was teamed with Château Luo Shan, and says it is a great place to work. Winning a silver medal in the government-sponsored competition was a big thing.

Being one of 15 out of 50 contestants to be awarded a medal and in his eyes a ‘stamp of appreciation’ by a panel of judges that included Master of Wine Andrew Caillard, the president of the OIV (International Organisation of Vine and Wine) and various other international wine judges and master som-

meliers is something Matt says he is ‘very happy with’, especially as he is still involved over there, with Chateau Luo Shan as an advisory winemaker.

“As a kid in Hawkes Bay, if you’d told me I’d be making awardwinning wine out of China, I’d have never believed it.”

“For me the competition was the foot in the door.

“I’ve got a degree, but I still started work in the cellar. I know how to do things, I can show people. I’m not just telling them what to do.”

Since August, he has been back to Ningxia three times.

The two regions’ harvests are six months apart, so Matt is able to balance his work commitments here with the opportunities in Ningxia.

He has just started working at Chateau Luo Shan with another winemaker from here, who is a

small-batch red winemaker, and that’s working well. They can share the time commitments in Ningxia, which means Matt doesn’t have to be away from Marlborough so often.

Ningxia is in China’s far north, next to the Gobi desert. It is where China has decided its premium wine-growing area is and it has modelled itself on France’s Bordeaux, making similar styles of blended-red wines.

Marlborough has a sister-region agreement with Ningxia.

China doesn’t have a strong reputation for quality wine and winedrinking, but that is changing as Ningxia wine companies develop.

Ningxia is focussed on making wine to get international accolades and ‘they’re doing quite well at it’, Matt says. The flagship 2015 cabernet sauvignon he made for the winery he now consults at has picked up gold medals at International wine shows such as Berlin and Bruxelles – shows governed by the OIV For him, the experience in China is about producing quality wine, he says.

“The winery is quality-focused

first and foremost, my primary role is to make super premium and rich wines for cellaring and destined to win over judges at international shows to help kick start this brand.

“The white wine has a long way to go but the reds are amazing.”

He recently lined his competition wine up against some very decent Hawkes Bay examples and was surprised to find just how well the Chinese wine stood up.

The climate allows for super-ripe flavours, Matt says, and even thick-skinned, concentrated big tannin-type varieties can achieve optimum ripeness.

“Ripe cabernet sauvignon is a rare but marvellous thing.”

In Ningxia, the low-cropped vines, hand-harvested fruit which is bunch-sorted at the winery, de-stemmed and finally berrysorted, means only the best get through to the tank, he says, so with these labour-intensive and handprocessing methods able to used, the wines are ‘truly hand-crafted’.

By Bill McElhinney There were lots of happy faces and cute children at the Montessori Preschool in Francis Street, Blenheim, on Saturday as families gathered to see the children perform their annual Christmas concert.

The garden was filled with family and

friends as the children sang a range of Christmas and children’s songs, in Te Reo Maori and English.

“It was a happy and relaxed occasion where families socialised and celebrated their children’s success over a shared lunch,” centre manager Rachel Roundhill says.

Conservation dogs search for pests A pest detection blitz by 12 conservation dogs and their handlers in the Marlborough Sounds last week found no predators on island sanctuaries, giving assurance the islands are safe for the endangered native species living there.

The dog teams searched 11 Department of Conservation-managed islands that are predator-free safe havens for rare and endangered species such as tuatara, orangefronted parakeets/kakariki, mohua, giant weta, and Hamilton’s and Maud Island frogs/ pepeketua.

The pest detection sweep included a check of Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary near Picton for mustelids and cats with none found, though indication of a cat was picked up outside its predator-proof fence.

The Conservation Dogs Programme, supported by partner Kiwibank, uses speciallytrained dogs and their handlers to find protected species, for monitoring, health checks and translocations, or unwanted pests.

Currently, approximately 45 dogs find native species and 35 dogs detect pests.

Conservation Dogs programme manager Sally Thomas says the Marlborough Sounds’ pest detection blitz has given the conservation dog handlers a great opportunity to work together.

DOC Sounds operations manager David Hayes says stoats and mice have turned up

on Marlborough Sounds predator-free islands in the past and conservation dogs provide a vital role in checking for predators.

“Predator-free islands have surveillance measures to detect pests such as traps and tracking tunnels but to be sure pests haven’t snuck onto islands and evaded detection, regular searches with conservation dogs are needed.”

He says mouse footprints were found on Blumine Island in June and a mouse caught in a trap.

“This latest search by the dog teams gives us reassurance it’s unlikely there are other mice on Blumine.

“We ask people visiting islands open to the public to help keep these sanctuaries pest-free” Visitors to islands should check before going out on the water that boats, kayaks, all bags, containers, food and gear are clear of mice, rats, ants, spiders or other animals.

All clothing, footwear and gear should be free of soil and plant material, including seeds and foliage. Searches of Picton, Waikawa and Havelock marinas detected rodents which could stow away on boats and be carried to island sanctuaries.

DOC will discuss with Port Marlborough and community conservation groups ways to work together to reduce rodents at the marinas.

Award winners host field day A public field day at Muller Station, winner of the Farming category in the 2017 Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards, attracted a record crowd of 160 people last week.

Station owners Steve and Mary Satterthwaite shared their story, from the battle against weeds, rabbits and other pests to where they are today – the second biggest merino supplier to Icebreaker and farming that is in tune with their

environment.

Awards judge Peter Anderson said the best farms are very aware of how important caring for the environment is to their farming operation and to the future of their land.

“The Satterthwaites, Steve and Mary, are an excellent example of this and shared their experience in improved grazing management, weed

The Marlborough District Council is a principal sponsor of the Awards. Entries for the next round of the Cawthron Marlborough Environment Awards open in August 2018.

Railway station available to community

By Celeste Alexander The Awatere Valley Trust announced earlier this year they hoped to re-open the Seddon railway station as a community centre, and so far a number of organisations have put it good use.

Trust member Charmaine Hammond says the trust has leased the railway station building and land and it’s their hope that after June next year, the community can own it. Until then it it will be used as a community centre.

“We’ve had a quilting group here, Community Law is now coming once a week and local RSE workers are also using it for their weekly meetings. We have also had a group of ladies book it for December to use the kitchen.

“It’s a fantastic building with its own commercial kitchen and it has had hardly any earthquake damage, making it the ideal place to hire and local groups to make

use of it.

“Our purpose is about the people and doing what we can when there’s the opportunity, especially involving the arts and crafts groups, and we are always keen to hear from anyone wanting to utilise it,” she says.

The trust is also wanting more people to become involved. There’s currently around eight people part of the trust.

“We see us as standing independently, being there for the community and we have a lot of good ideas that are coming in of how the building and land can be used.

“It could be used for a centre for information and tourism services, medical services or a JP drop-in service, pop up markets and even for businesses wanting to hire it for a period of time to display their products and services,” Charmaine says.

Family day to talk about earthquake recovery

By Celeste Alexander A family day will be held at the Ward Domain on December 16 which aims to bring together both the town and country communities, and give them the chance to express how they feel about the earthquake recovery.

The event is organised by the Rural Support Trust’s top of the south branch, headed by Chris Faulls and is funded by the Rural Health Alliance Aotearoa New Zealand.

Chris says it follows on from a Beef and Lamb event held in December of last year, and aims to attract the same audience so they can get a contrast on what was a very raw time, versus how they feel 13 months on from the Kaikoura earthquake.

“We are hoping to get both town and country audiences from Clarence, Kekerengu, right through to Ward, Flaxbourne and the Awatere area, including rural businesses together to take stock of their recovery over the past year.

“It’s so we can check up on people and allow them to express back to us how they feel about

the recovery.

“I think in general the communities have recovered quite well but in saying that there are individuals who have had issues with stress from the earthquake itself, so everytime there’s an aftershock it brings all those emotions back.

“This is another opportunity for us to hear of any other issues people might be facing,” he says.

The family day will feature free games and activities for children and a barbecue dinner and drinks which will be provided.

Chris says he hopes to have a couple of GNS scientists there on the day and Red Cross will also have a presence.

“Our trustees will be talking with farmers and townsfolk to get a bit of a view of where they are at and where there might still be issues.

“We are really keen to have people from Seddon and the Awatere attend, so please bring along your families and come along,” he says.

This is the time of the year when Chilean Needle Grass becomes easier to spot and the hunt is on in the Blind River area by Council’s Biosecurity team.

Council staff and contractors will be combing known infestation areas as the plant becomes more visible during its summer flowering.

Landholders will also be undertaking a substantial amount of control work, predominantly in the Blind River area.

It invades dryland pastures and can be carried on sheep’s wool, on machinery and in clothing. Its sharp seeds can penetrate animals causing blindness, deafness and abscesses in sheep.

derwood says during the past 10 years the number of infestations has risen steeply and more help is needed from Marlburians to help reduce the impact this pest is having on our region.

“Between now and the end of summer is when the needle grass

is seeding and these seeds can easily hitch a ride, especially if you’re moving soil. If you’re in an infested area it’s important to be aware of the risk and the regulations which apply.”

“There are helpful resources available on the Council’s website, including a new Smart Map, with information on the status of the pest plant, where it has been found, photographs and explanation of what can be done to deal with it,” he says.

If you think you’ve seen the plant, take a photo of it, record the location and email the information to the Council (biosecurity@marlborough. govt.nz).

About The Role Reporting to a Block Manager, we have two roles available in the vineyards where the journey of our award-winning wine begins. You would be responsible for daily duties that bring us quality year after year: machine operation, supervising seasonal workers, and caring for our vineyards.

Women’s Tri winner Twenty six-year-old mother-of-two Nikita Gane won the Marlborough Women’s Triathlon on Sunday ahead of Hannah Barnsley in second place and Averil Leonard who finished third.

The winning team at the iconic 35-year-old Marlborough event was the Body Restore Clinic combination of Helen Sowman (run/swim) and Kate Harper (cycle).

Good medal haul for Blenheim Judo Club Blenheim Judo Club members had a successful day on November 19 when they hosted the Central Districts Judo closed championships.

The Blenheim club fielded its biggest team in many years, with 21 players competing, including boys and girls aged between seven and 14 years old. For some, this was their first competition.

The Blenheim club had a very successful day, winning 19 medals, the most out of all the clubs, seven gold, seven silver and five

bronze. “I was very proud of our team. They showed great enthusiasm, determination, technical skill and their results were very well deserved,” club coach Shayne Jacks says.

“Lukas Schroder, 11 years old and a green belt from Linkwater, has been practising judo since he was five and is a role model in the class,” Shayne says.

“At the competition he showed great judol, controlling his opponents every move in every situation to win gold.

“For Ryan Quinn, eight years old from Picton, this was his second competition and the improvements he has made in his judo ability and self-control were huge - he really deserves the gold and bronze medals he won,” Shayne says.

“Alex McLeish, eight years old from Renwick, has been coming to judo for nine months and this term has been practising one particular throw, Seoi nage. He executed this throw in the competition to perfection, scoring him a fantastic win.

The annual competition drew more than 50 judo players, along with their families, from Nelson, Motueka, Granity and Blenheim.

The judo club has been steadily growing over the last few years.

It has introduced junior beginner classes twice a year, where judoka learn the basic fundamentals of the sport before transitioning into the regular junior class.

The Blenheim Judo Club has both junior and senior classes on Tuesday evenings during school terms.

The Marlborough Red Devils Cycling Club draw for Thursday: Trail Blazers, 4pm-5pm Athletic Park.

For kids three to 10 years old who love playing on their bikes. Track racing.

6pm at Athletic Park, $5 seniors, $3 juniors.

Sunday December 3, 8am, Railway Station: Social ride, 30-40km. Suitable for anyone returning to cycling.

Tuesday December 5, two stage road race: Meet at Fairhall School at 5.45pm to sign on, 6.15pm start. Stage 1: 29.5km Stage 2: 1.4km (hill climb). $5 seniors, $3 juniors.

Walk up the Withers Warrior Women host a walk on the Wither Hills every Wednesday evening at 5:30pm.

Meet at the Rifle range car park.

This walk is for all fitness levels.

Children welcome.

Harriers summer run The Marlborough Harriers Club summer runners 5km time trial series on Thursday starts on the Taylor River by the Monro Street car park.

Walkers start at 5.45pm, runners at 6pm.

These runs are non-competitive and are made as enjoyable as possible.

The cost is $2 per week or $20 for the season (families $25 for the season).

Red Devils cycling results The third event of the Red Devils Cycling Club summer series, a two stage road race, was held in cool conditions on Tuesday evening last week.

Stage one, a 23km A grade event, came down to a tight sprint finish

with Luc Cowley winning from Andrew Bidwell.

The B grade was dominated by Adam Bidwell and C grade by Finn McKenzie, who rode away from his group. Bailey McKay won the sprint for second place.

Stage two was 20km and in the A grade, Luc sprinted stongly to win again from Andrew. In the B grade stage two 6km, Adam made it two wins. Finn was the only rider to do the second stage but posted a creditable time.
