By Bill McElhinney Sporty youngsters at Blenheim Bohally Intermediate are feeling upbeat this week after their best-ever results at the Top of the South Intermediate School Sports.

Hundreds of intermediate school students took to the field, court and turf in Nelson last week, vying for school sport supremacy.

The Top of The South Intermediate Schools Sports Association’s annual winter tournament is the largest sports event for school students in the area.

Arlie Bates, captain of the Bohally girls’ hockey team, was also delighted with their performance.

“We didn’t lose a game,” she says.

“We had a tough contest against the Nelson St Joseph’s team, but we went through to win the finals 2-0 against Waimea.”

The Bohally mountain biking team also had a winning time.

“In the first stage of the competition Bohally was first in the boys’ and first in the girls’ event,” team captain Cameron Clemett says.

“In the cross country Bohally took first, second, third and fourth places and we were first and

second in the uphill sprint,” says.

Cameron competed in the New Zealand Cyclocross championships held in Marlborough at the weekend.

Despite the tough, muddy conditions, 13-yearold Cameron, one of the youngest competitors, finished fourth in the New Zealand 13-19 field.

The Bohally pupils were billeted for the weekend with host families, which added to the experience.

“The kids were really buzzing when they came back,” Bohally principal Shane Campbell says.

“We have lots of support from parents, many of who volunteer as coaches, and the kids went away with a great attitude.

Graduation parade a family affair

By Bill McElhinney It was a proud moment on Friday for Blenheim man Dave Baker as he watched his daughter Sarah graduate from the latest cadet course at RNZAF Base Woodbourne.

The young men and women at the base do 12 weeks of recruit training, learning the basic ropes of air force life.

At the conclusion of the course, the recruits move on to trade training, which gives them the chance to expand their skills in their chosen specialist field.

The air force is a family affair for the Bakers.

Born in Cheshire, England, Dave joined the Royal Air Force from school.

He came to New Zealand 13 years ago, joining the RNZAF stationed at Whenuapai in Auckland.

He now works as a civilian weapons instructor at Woodbourne, teaching recruits everything from the use of explosives to bomb disposal and training them in the use of small arms. Dave is also a prominent Marlborough football referee.

Sarah’s mum, Claudia Ayling, who is the defence community coordinator at Woodbourne, was also at Friday’s graduation, along with son Oliver, who graduated with the last intake of recruits at the base.

Also at the graduation ceremony was Sarah’s brother, Martyn, who is currently working as a barista but is considering joining the police.

By Celeste Alexander It’s that time of year where the streets are speckled with yellow as Daffodil Day volunteers get out in force with their collection buckets.

This Friday is Daffodil Day and volunteers like Marrilyn Colquhoun will be among the many who help to fundraise for the Cancer Society Marlborough.

Name released The police have released the name of the 20 year-old man killed in a workplace accident in Wairau Valley last Thursday.

He was Luke Thomas Dixon, from Marlborough.

Police extend their deepest sympathies to his family and friends during this difficult time.

“Every day 60 New Zealanders will hear the words, ‘I’m sorry, you have cancer’.”

As well as collection buckets, there will be Daffodil Day merchandise being sold all around the region.

Emergency award Brian FM has won an innovation in public communications award from the Emergency Management and Public Affairs Conference held in Wellington this week.

The radio station won its award in part for its role in conveying information after the Kaikoura earthquake.

Spring Creek detour Traffic is to be detoured away from the Spring Creek roundabout today to let asphalt be laid at the new intersection, the New Zealand Transport Agency says.

There will also be a further single lane closure for east-bound traffic on Rapaura Road between State Highway One and Murrays Road tomorrow, but if the weather is wet, this work will be pushed out to the next dry day.

Auditor-General to be asked about nurses

By Cathie Bell Opponents of the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board’s decision to move district nurses into the ‘health hub’ are to ask the Auditor-General to investigate the decision.

They say the $1.15 million cost of moving the district nurses from a purpose-built facility at Wairau Hospital into the health hub in central Blenheim is wasteful and unnecessary.

The group, led by Havelock resident Roger McClymont, met last Monday to discuss the health board’s rejection of community views and to decide what to do next.

They say they are ‘very very disappointed’

that the review team and the health board dismissed community concerns about the move.

The district health board proposed moving the district nurses from their purpose-built facility at Wairau Hospital to the health hub in Queen Street, but staff and public objections made them review the nursing service across the top of the South Island.

The review, done by three consultants, was presented to the board last month, and the board voted to implement all the recommendations.

Essentially, the reviewers dismissed the concerns raised about the move, saying in response to being told the move has ‘no

discernible benefit to the community’, that ‘if one adopts a narrow ‘siloed’ view of district nursing this observation is probably correct’.

“However, when one considers healthcare as a whole rather than as parallel separate systems and consequently the future of healthcare in New Zealand is providing coordinated, integrated, multi-agency care in the community and people’s homes, there is considerable benefit in locating district nurses in the community alongside other primary and community service providers.”

The concerned residents’ group says it is clear the health board ‘has no idea’ what the district nurses in Marlborough do.

By Cathie Bell There is a desperate need in the community for a better way of supporting young people and their families as they struggle to deal with difficult issues, people at a community meeting say.

About 40 people attended a public workshop last Friday as part of the development of Te Ha o Nga Rangatahi, a Whanau Ora-funded programme run by Te Hauora o Ngati Rarua, aimed at building community resilience to reduce youth suicide.

The at-times emotional meeting made it clear that the current way of dealing with resilience and mental health is not working and people are looking for a new and better way of doing things.

Project manager Stephen Trent says he is keen to hear from people about their ideas, and is meeting with young people this week to collect their ideas on what is needed.

Picton Clinker and Classic Boating Club commodore Dick Hall is pointing to a 100-year-old piece of Marlborough history now residing in the Edwin Fox Museum at the Dunbar Wharf, Picton.

Dick and club captain Harold Gratton, along with other club members, have renovated an eleven-foot clinker dinghy given to them by the Guard family in Kakapo Bay. “She’s had a hard life,” Harold says. “She would have hauled firewood, been used to set butterfish nets, and used as a launch tender.”

John (Jacky) Guard began whaling from Tory Channel in the late 1820s, later moving to Kakapo Bay in Port Underwood. The fourth generation of his family, who still live there, passed the dinghy on to the Clinker Club.

It has been tidied up, has had a coat of paint, and on Sunday was officially handed over to the Edwin Fox Museum.

The Clinker Club has about 70 members, most in Marlborough and Nelson, who meet at least once a month to take their craft for runs around the Sounds or up rivers.

Clinker is a method of constructing hulls

of boats by fixing wooden planks so that the planks overlap along their edges.

Clinker construction can be traced back to around 793 AD and the Vikings of Scandinavia. They developed the advanced method of construction that enabled them to build ocean going craft which sailed huge distances on planned voyages.

The Picton Clinker Club members are mostly retired, but are passionate about salvaging and restoring their old boats, Dick says. Although some also own large launches, they say they have as much fun in their clinkers as they do in their larger craft.

The Edwin Fox was built in India in 1853 as a trader and was the last of her type. She was a troop ship for the Crimean War, reputedly carrying such illustrious passengers as Florence Nightingale.

In 1873 the ship carried immigrants to New Zealand from England. By the 1880s the age of steam had arrived and the sheep industry in New Zealand was booming. Edwin Fox was fitted out as a floating freezer hulk and was used as such in several South Island ports.

She was finally towed to Picton in 1897 initially as a freezer ship, later as a coal hulk and now preserved under cover as a prominent tourist attraction.

Councillor stands for Parliament

By Cathie Bell Marlborough District Councillor Jamie Arbuckle has been chosen to stand as NZ First’s Kaikoura electorate candidate.

Jamie says his nomination was confirmed yesterday morning by the party’s hierarchy.

The change to national politics is ‘exciting’ and a ‘big learning experience’, he says.

“I’ve always liked politics. On election night, I love watching those results come in.”

Reducing current MP Stuart Smith’s majority to 3000 votes will be ‘a victory’, he says.

“It sends a message to the National Party that some things are not right.”

Jamie says he is targeting the party vote for NZ First.

“The party got nine per cent last election, I want it up over 15 per cent.”

He will be standing against Kaikoura MP and National Party candidate Stuart Smith, Labour Party candidate Jeanette Walker, and Green Party candidate Richard McCubbin.

Meanwhile, ACT has selected engineer Richard Evans as their Kaikoura candidate, ranked at 12 on the party’s list.

This will be the third general election in which Richard has stood for ACT. And longtime candidate and Waipara farmer John McCaskey will be standing in Kaikoura for the Democrats for Social Credit party.

Taylor River Dear Ed, Great news about the money going into restoring and enhancing the Taylor River. The river is a great asset flowing through town and further upstream through to the Dam is a wonderful recreation area for walkers, runners and dogs and their staff.

Fishing meeting Dear Ed I attended the NZ Initiative’s evening on recreational fishing as reported in last Wednesday’s paper.

In amongst the smokescreen and mirrors, it seemed the agenda is very probably to suck the recreational fishing catch into the tradable quota management system (QMS) where it will be at the mercy of the corporate companies and bureaucrats. Long Tan battle remembered

By Celeste Alexander “Donald Bensemann was a hard case but a cracker soldier,” John Capill of the Marlborough Branch of the New Zealand Vietnam Veterans’ Association says during a wreath-laying service held last Friday.

Blenheim’s Lance Corporal Donald Bensemann was killed in action in Vietman in 1968 and was one of many remembered by those who attended a service for the 51st anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam War last week.

The service was held at the RSA lounge, Clubs of Marlborough where John spoke and shared his own experiences.

“Donald was in the same company as me, Victor 3. Our company was there for 12 months.

“Donald initially meant to serve for six months

but decided to stay for another six but didn’t make it unfortunately. He was killed in action aged 21,” he says.

During his speech, John spoke of the terrible effects of Agent Orange and guerilla warfare, and the bravery shown by the troops after being isolated and facing attack.

“The Vietnam war should never have happened. Through the treaty signed by the NZ and American governments we were bound to go help out. The treatment we received on return was appalling.

“We served our country to the best of our ability but were treated like lepers, so it’s my hope that New Zealand troops serving in overseas conflicts are not treated in the same manner,” he says.

Glynn scales new heights in art award

By Bill McElhinney Marlborough artist Glynn Davies climbed up a ladder to paint a picture of his wife, Kathryn.

It was worth the effort. On Friday, at the annual Members’ Exhibition of the Marlborough Art Society, Glynn was awarded the Stella de Gruchy Memorial Trophy for the best painting.

The landscape of Marlborough’s East Coast was the inspiration for another winning work at the exhibition.

Danielle Yealands’ oil and

encaustic mixed media painting, Beyond Measure, was awarded the first prize of $500. The prize was sponsored by the Marlborough Decorative and Fine Art Society, and vice chairperson, Pat O’Brien, was there to present it.

The 47 entries in the latest exhibition were judged by Wendy Murphy, Brian Badcock and Pat O’Brien.

The paintings are on display in the society’s High Street gallery until September 3.

Dame Anne Salmond heads the team in Gisborne marking 250 years since Captain James Cook arrived in New Zealand, but the Marlborough Sounds has a strong claim too.

She talks to Cathie Bell.

Finding the memories Historian and anthropologist Dame Anne Salmond is based in Auckland and heads the Gisborne group planning the Captain Cook commemorations there in the buildup to the 250th anniversary in 2019, but Marlborough’s Queen Charlotte Sound is possibly the most important part of Cook’s story.

“Queen Charlotte Sound was his favourite part of the Pacific,” she says.

There was a ‘very complex’ set of meetings between Maori and Europeans at the time.

“It was like Grand Central Station at that point.

“Whenever he came in with his ships, people came from far and wide, wakas from the north, people with goods and services to barter.”

The arrivals of Europeans were strange and new, she says.

“To start with, it was like a spaceship landing in the harbour.”

Cook was helped hugely by Tupaia, a high priest and star navigator, who re-connected Maori with their ancestral lands.

“It was tremendous for locals to meet him.

“It’s great to know and understand where you’ve come from.”

Now in this time, she says, we’re celebrating New Zealand winning the America’s Cup with vessels descended from Pacific voyaging craft.

“Looking at the way these two great voyaging traditions come together, it is something

we can all take pride in.”

Those working on commemorating Cook’s arrival are looking at it to celebrate both the Polynesian and European voyaging traditions, Dame Anne says.

“We’re celebrating that Polynesian legacy of star navigation and commemorating the arrival of Cook and that voyaging tradition, which was then the cutting edge of technology…pushing new technology to the edge.”

She says it’s fascinating to see how things work or don’t work in those interactions, which she explores in her new book, ‘Tears of Rangi’, looking at the different world views between Maori and European “For me, why 2019 matters is because I think a country without a memory of its own history is like a person without their memory.

“They don’t know who they are, where they were born, who their loved ones are...If you don’t have that, it is a terrible state to be in.

It’s true for any individual case, and true for a country as well.

“It’s great to know and understand where you’ve come from.”

The story of Cook’s arrival and interaction with Maori explorers is a ‘legacy of maritime expertise and success’, ‘the spirit we need today’, she says, but the same time, acknowledging that the interactions were not always tranquil.

“It’s a fantastic heritage to hand on to our kids and grandchildren - it’s adventurous, it’s a global story.”

People need to ‘really to understand things as they have been, ‘warts and all’, Dame Anne says.

That enables us to deal with a complex world in the future, she says.

“These things matter enormously.

“A country with amnesia is somewhat lost.”

Leopard seal sightings

Ginger group rates council

Krista has been monitoring a leopard seal that had been seen near Warkworth, and then arrived via the Waitemata Harbour and took up residence at Westhaven Marina, and sightings indicate it has been living in northern waters for about five years.

She is also monitoring one in Marlborough for five months.

An 0800 number for people to report sightings of leopard seals has been set up to collate more data.

To report a leopard seal sighting: Call 0800 LEOPARD (0800 5367273) – record the date, time and location and if possible, take a photograph.

Leopard seals are known to be aggressive to humans so should not be approached.

The Marlborough District Council ranks well across the board when compared to the other unitary authorities in the top of the South Island, according to the Taxpayers’ Union executive director Jordan Williams.

“Per residential ratepayer, Marlborough District Council has the lowest average residential rates, the lowest operating expenses, the lowest debt, and the lowest staff costs in the region.”

Jordan says the Tasman District Council’s rates are the second highest in the country, according to Ratepayers’ Report, the Taxpayers’ Union’s local government league tables, at www.ratepayersreport.nz.

At $3,056 per year, the average bill is $700 more than Auckland Council, another unitary authority.

“While unitary authorities can be expected to have a higher rates bill, owing to their role of performing the functions of a regional council, ratepayers in Tasman District should question why their average residential rates bill is higher than neighbouring unitary authorities, Nelson City Council and the Marlborough District Council.”

Leopard seals in Marlborough and Auckland could challenge conventional thinking about the species.

The seals have always been described as an Antarctic species, solitary animals distributed widely throughout the pack ice and second only to killer whales in the list of Antarctica’s top predators, but now NIWA cetacean biologist Dr Krista Hupman believes it is possible leopard seals could be common in the waters around New Zealand.

“People call leopard seals a ‘vagrant species’ which means New Zealand is well outside of their normal range, but this research shows that this is not the case for all leopard seals, and that these animals may have been here a lot longer and are a lot more common than we know.”

By Bill McElhinney Nearly five years down the track and a group of Marlborough artisans have reason to celebrate.

The craft cooperative have been running a successful shop in High Street, Picton since they decided to band together to promote and sell their works.

And what a great selection they have: greeting cards, knitwear, wooden boxes, bowls and platters, quilted art, household goods, soap, lotions and balms, artwork, jewellery, felted slippers, pottery, ukuleles and much more.

All the items in the shop are unique, handcrafted and made in Marlborough.

“It’s a major selling point,” cooperative chairperson Win Oliver says, who calls himself the woodbutcher and crafts wooden items from recycled French oak wine barrels.

“There’s so much imported stuff around, especially in souvenir shops. Visitors are really delighted to find so many good things that are locally made.”

The cooperative has 32 members, many of whom have been with the organisation since it was started.

“Members enjoy being part of a group and working with like-minded people,” Win says.

The artisans share the cost of running the shop and take turns at working on the premises.

“It works out to be about one day a fortnight for each member,” he says.

Many of the members will also take commissions from customers to make something just for them. Tourists and cruise ship passengers are a really good market, Win says.

“We are really busy in the summer, less so in the winter. But perhaps a lot of Marlborough people don’t realise we’re here, and what a great range of things we have.”

He says they are grateful to have a supportive landlord who has made the shop rental affordable.

Car show to raise money for cancer This Sunday will see the inaugural ‘Daffodil Vehicle Display for Cancer’ held at Brayshaw Heritage Park, featuring a huge array of cars and motorcycles.

Organising the event is the Vintage Car Club of New Zealand Marlborough branch which is raising money for Cancer Society Marlborough.

“We are expecting a great display of veteran and vintage cars, classic cars, hot rods, rally cars, sprint cars from the local speedway and the odd tractor from the Farm Machinery Museum next door,” branch president Kelly Landon-Lane says.

The vehicle display will be held on Patchell’s Green at the park between 10am - 3pm and the whole community is invited to go along.

There will be a gold coin entrance fee and inside there will be plenty to keep the whole family entertained, including train rides, Mr Whippy as well as light refreshments.

All money raised on the day will go to the Marlborough branch of the Cancer Society.

Yellow blooms on show at hospital

By Celeste Alexander A group of friends created a beautiful ceramic daffodil display at Wairau Hospital on Monday, in memory of someone very special to them.

The group was led by Jilly Taylor who, along with her friends, placed the daffodils in an outdoor area located between the oncology and

outpatients departments, near the main entrance.

The daffodils, made last year by local children for fundraising, were purchased from the Cancer Society Marlborough with a donation from Fisher and Paykel, which Jilly and her friends then displayed in memory of her sister Ally Jerram who passed away last Christmas.

Hilary Gill of the Cancer Society says they wanted to create a permanent fixture at the hospital where they could be admired.

“We had daffodils made by school children left over that weren’t sold after last year’s Daffodil Day and the hospital was very generous to allow us to create the outdoor display.

“Fisher and Paykel made

this possible after they heard about some being destroyed last year on the Taylor River and feeling sorry for the kids, they wanted to make a donation.

“The money they donated purchased 200 of the ceramic daffodils as well as enabling us to purchase daffodil bulbs which we will be planting,” she says.

The thing about wood ash is that it is an easily-available form of potassium for plants. Wood ash can also contain calcium, phosphorus and magnesium as well as other trace elements.

Because it’s created through the combustion of plant materials, it contains many of the elements needed to support new growth, and has long been used by gardeners and farmers as a natural soil amendment.

In addition to gardening uses, wood ask can also be used in a variety of other ways.

Young mountain biker is Liv-ing her dream

By Bill McElhinney Eighteen-year-old Marlborough Girls’ College student Liv Bishop leaves next month to compete against some of the world’s best riders in the World Mountain Bike Championships.

Liv was a member of an eightstrong New Zealand junior cross country mountain biking team that spent six weeks in April competing in England, Austria, Germany, the Czech Republic and Switzerland.

“It was amazing,” says Liv. “It was my first big competition and I loved every second!”

She was also pleased with her results, finishing in the top 20 in most of her events.

Now she has her sights set on the world event in Cairns, and is training six days a week with a mixture of biking, gym work and some running.

Liv has been riding mountain bikes with her family, dad Jut Bishop and mum Mea Ivory-Bishop, both well-known Marlborough athletes, for as long as she can remember.

But she only began competing at 15 after her dad took her to a local cyclocross race.

“I instantly discovered my pas-

sion for racing,” Liv says.

She became a regular cyclocrosser and cross-country racer, and has tried gravity-orientated races such as downhill and enduro.

“But I love cross country best,” she says.

Liv is studying physical education, biology and classics at college, and has to work hard to keep up with her studies after being away at competitions.

Her goal is to become an elite cross country racer and travel around the world racing for New Zealand. She has already represented her country twice this year, at the Oceania champs in Queensland where she finished third in the junior women’s race, and during Australian nationals rounds in New South Wales where she was third and fourth at under-19 level.

Fundraising for competitions also keeps Liv busy. She works after school and at weekends at Cycle World. She is also having a fundraising dinner at the Bamboo Garden restaurant on August 29. Tickets are available from Blenheim Appliance Centre or Liv’s social media site.

Makos thumped The first game of the Mitre 10 provincial rugby season brought the Tasman Makos down with a thump after they were beaten 39-0 by Canterbury at Trafalgar Park in Nelson last Saturday.

This weekend, the Makos play Manawatu.

Tussock run on The fundraiser for Seddon School, the Tussock Run, is on this Sunday.

There are three courses, a five kilometre, 15 km and Quarter Marathon run and walk events, with registrations open from 8am on the day, and events start at 9am.

All courses encompass a variety of farmland, vineyards and unsealed roads.

The money is to go towards much needed earthquake repairs including a new entrance to the school.

Thursday run The Marlborough Harrier Club is holding a pack/training run or walk tomorrow, leaving from the clubrooms at Oliver Park on the corner of Weld and Cleghorn Streets at 6pm.

Central Pirates have taken out the Top of the South Football competition in disappointing fashion as Richmond defaulted to them, meaning that next weekend’s game against club mates Central is a dead rubber.

There was little to smile about for our other representation in that competition as Central went down 4-1 to

FC Nelson Reserves. Steve McCaa scored from the spot after brother Andrew was taken down in the box.

The other game in muddy conditions was played out between Rangers City and FC Nelson Locomotive.

The result did not go the way of the Marlborough team with their only goal being scored by Lacy Rohloff.

They eventually went

down 3-1. This weekend the two Central teams square off in Blenheim and Rangers City head to Nelson to take on Richmond.

The remaining senior sides are taking part in an end of season tournament which will conclude this weekend ahead of the senior prize giving to be held at the club rooms at A&P Park on Saturday evening.

Family cheer Mum on at Woodbourne run

By Bill McElhinney Rosa Tate was feeling tired and sore after finishing the hybrid walk/run section of the Woodbourne half marathon on Sunday.

“As you can see, I’m not built like a runner,” she says with a grin.

“But I’ve done this event once before and today I’ve recorded my best ever time, so I’m really pleased.”

The popular event attracted fewer competitors, although event organiser Lindsay Norriss said he was pleased with the event, which drew around 300 runners, walkers and hybrid racers who competed across a variety of courses.

Organisers say they will run the event next year at the same time, the third week of August.

Rosa was also delighted with the support of her family, husband Bob and daughters Zoe and Tess, who were there to cheer her on.

As well as the satisfaction of completing the event, Rosa had another reason to take part.

She had some sponsorship for the fundraising she

is doing to help daughter Zoe, who suffers from Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome.

The syndrome is a condition that affects many parts of the body.

The major features of the disorder include a characteristic facial appearance, delayed growth and development, intellectual disability, and seizures.

“It’s very rare,” Rosa says.

“Zoe is one of only seven in New Zealand who suffer from this.”

As well as helping Zoe, Rosa’s fundraising will also go towards holding a New Zealand conference on Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome to be held in Blenheim in October.

Methven runner Stephen Blackwell won the half marathon, with Ryan McAlister from Blenheim finishing second.

The half marathon hybrid, walk and run, was won by Roger Gray and local runner Billy Hebberd won the 10km run.

The 5km run title went to junior runner Campbell Gill.

Local driver Neil Webb continues his winning streak after taking out a first place win at the weekend.

Husband Ben and daughters Zoe and Tess were at Woodbourne on Sunday morning to cheer on mum Rosa, who completed the hybrid walk/run section of the Woodbourne half marathon.

By Celeste Alexander Plenty of eager faces lined the safety fences of Riverlands Industrial Estate on Sunday as they cheered on their favourite drivers at the annual Picton Tools & Tyres Riverlands Street Sprint.

Forty drivers put their cars to the test as they raced against the clock. Christchurch driver Josh Mitchell was considered a top contender which he proved right when he took first place in his class (d).

First place in the a class was Rob MacKenzie (Nelson), b class Tim Herd (Blenheim) and c class Paul Roughan (Blenheim).

Taking out the Webb Trophy, awarded to the fastest Marlborough Car Club member, was Neil Webb who has held this trophy for a number of years.

The elimination shootout was again won by Neil Webb, followed closely by Richard Bateman, David Gee then Jason Clark, making up the top four placings.

Organisers Jason and Tracy Clark and Richard Bateman thank everyone involved, including the public who turned out to watch.

The next event on the MCC calendar is the Tuamarina Sprint, contesting the McKenzie Cup on September 10.

By Bill McElhinney Sporty youngsters at Blenheim Bohally Intermediate are feeling upbeat this week after their best-ever results at the Top of the South Intermediate School Sports.

Hundreds of intermediate school students took to the field, court and turf in Nelson last week, vying for school sport supremacy.

The Top of The South Intermediate Schools Sports Association’s annual winter tournament is the largest sports event for school students in the area.
