By Cathie Bell and Matt Brown Accident data over four years sourced from the Marlborough District Council shows that Alabama Road, which could have hundreds of students cycling down it to a new school site, is a black spot for cycling accidents.

The Education Ministry proposes to move Marlborough Boys’ and Marlborough Girls’ Colleges to a site near the end of Alabama Road, at the same time as council data shows that road has many of the reported cycling accidents in Blenheim at its many roundabouts.

Colleges’ move could put cycling students at risk Continued from page 1 There have been 18 reported accidents between cyclists and cars along Alabama Road in the past four years, and the intersection with the most accidents in Blenheim is the roundabout at the intersection of Alabama Road and Weld Street, with eight accidents.

Another black spot is the roundabout intersection between Seymour Street and Maxwell Road, also with eight accidents.

Council road safety co-ordinator Robyn Blackburn says no-one has plotted the data before.

The safety of Alabama Road for cyclists hasn’t been raised before, she says.

However, several council staff members have been knocked off their bikes travelling to work, including one at the Alabama Road and Weld Street roundabout.

“I imagine it will be raised further down the track, if the combined col-

leges’ site is confirmed. That’s a few years off.

“It’s not come under anyone’s radar at the moment. I would like to think it would be addressed in the planning for the combined colleges.”

It is an issue to be considered as the council and other agencies are encouraging more cycling, walking, and scootering to school by students.

Marlborough Boys’ College principal Wayne Hegarty says about 25 per cent of the school’s 970 students cycle each day, and the numbers had gone up since the school installed a ‘bike cage’ to secure bikes during the day.

No-one had raised the safety of Alabama Road for cyclists with him, he says, but he’s well aware of the risks of Alabama Road as a staff member was knocked off his bike at the Alabama Road and Weld Street roundabout.

Hopefully, cycle paths along Alabama Road will be part of the future planning, Wayne says.

Marlborough Girls’ College principal Karen Stewart says only about 10 per cent of her students cycled to school.

The college has done research how students came to school about five years ago, and half came by bus with ‘a fairly low’ number cycling.

Marlborough Roads spokesman Steve Murrin was unable to be contacted yesterday.

Ministry education infrastructure service head Kim Shannon says the ministry is ‘really interested’ in the research done on this.

She says in the planning for the site, the ministry will be including consideration for the safety of students arriving at and leaving school, including cycle and pedestrian safety, as it does for every school site.

“We have big secondary schools all around the country in a number of high volume traffic areas.

We work with local authorities, police and NZ Transport Agency to

minimise traffic hazards around a school. There are a number of ways to do that, including lower speed limits in the area.

“In the case of the preferred site for the Marlborough colleges, we are still planning which part of the site would be most suitable to locate the colleges, as well as where entrances and exits are placed.

Those will take into account traffic considerations.”

Meanwhile, the ministry’s engineers Tonkin and Taylor, have applied for resource consent to start geotechnical investigation of the Alabama Road site last week.

The resource consent application says the engineers plan to do two 60 to 150 millimetre diameter machinedrilled boreholes up to 20 metres deep, installing a standpipe piezometer, and drill 10 32 to 45 mm diameter cone penetrometer tests up to 20 metres deep.

Cornerstone sites sell

By Cathie Bell The land and buildings housing the Cornerstone Bar in central Blenheim has been sold to the Derry family.

The Derry family already owns the Speights Ale House.

Cornerstone owners’ spokesman Ryan McQuillan says the agreement to sell the two sites that make up the Cornerstone Bar was agreed last Friday, and they will be settling in a couple of weeks.

He says the bar is being sold as a going concern and its future is up to the new owners.

Purchaser John Derry says the deal to buy Cornerstone stacks up, now his family owns the entire site.

“We will close the bar and refurbish, with the aim of providing a nice atmosphere for diners with good food,” he says.

“This will complement The Speights Alehouse.”

The refurbishment is expected to be completed by July.

The bar stretches across a piece of land bordered by Maxwell Road, Queen Street, and George Street, next to Bythell Place.

There have been rumours of a sale circulating around Marlborough for some months, and The Sun understands sale negotiations took a long time to reach a conclusion.

Ryan says his family has run the bar for a decade and ‘had heaps and heaps of fun’, but it is now time to step back.

“We’ve changed as much as the industry has changed... We’re happy to be moving on to the next chapter.”

He has a young family, with two children under two, and plans to spend more time with

Body found Police divers yesterday recovered a body from the Marlborough Sounds, after an extensive search which began on Saturday, after a 49 year-old man diving off a boat near Stephens Island was reported overdue. Formal identification of the body is yet to take place, and until then Police will not be in a position to release any further details of the deceased.

Australian Air Force to debut new aircraft The Australian Air Force has confirmed its new C-27J Spartan airlifter will make its first public outing at Omaka as part of the Yealands Classic Fighters Air Show next month, organisers say.

Yealands Classic Fighters committee member and former Air ViceMarshal David Bamfield says it is ‘particularly thrilling’ to welcome the RAAF back to Omaka.

“The C27J has not been to New Zealand before but we are hoping that it will soon become a regular sight in our skies, especially at Omaka in much the same fashion as the Caribou once was.”

The RAAF have supported Classic Fighters previously, he says, demonstrating the now decommissioned DHC-4 Caribou for the 2007 and 2009 shows.

The C-27J which replaces the Caribou fills out the RAAF’s air transport capabilities alongside the C-17A Globemaster and C-130J Hercules. The battlefield air lifter is equipped with missile warning systems, electronic self-protection and battlefield armour allowing it to operate freely in high-threat environments, improving the RAAF’S ability to move people, equipment and supplies in Australia and the Pacific.

A thousand jars and counting

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Don Helman has made over 1000 jars of marmalade for the St John Charity Shop on Boyce Street, and is barely keeping up with demand.

Don was helped by a St John ambulance a few years ago when he required heart surgery and it was afterwards that he decided he wanted to give back.

He visited the charity shop to sign up as a volunteer but soon realised the pace was too much and instead offered to make some

marmalade for the shop to sell.

His offer of ‘a jar or two here and there’ has skyrocketed due to demand for his marmalade and yesterday he delivered his 1016th jar.

The former pharmacist says he has always enjoyed cooking and judging by the number of jars sold each week, many others enjoy his cooking.

Don sources his fruit from locals and welcomes any donations of oranges, lemons and sugar to help keep costs down. These donations can be made to the shop.

Story and photo by Celeste Alexander The weekend weather put up some ‘perfect’ fishing conditions for those who took part in the Renwick Arms Country Club’s annual fishing competition.

The three day event saw locals head out to their favourite fishing spots on Friday and Saturday before taking their catch in on Sunday to be weighed.

A new record number of entries were recorded this year with 243 entries in total, a result club manager Alan Fergus was really happy with.

“I’m over the moon to be honest,” he grins.

“Each year it’s growing and we are giving away more and more in prizes which is fantastic for the community. There were some really happy people and kiddies which just made it a great day,” he says.

People of all ages flocked to Renwick on Sunday to weigh in their catch. Children

brought in buckets of eels and carried in their sharks and blue cod, while the adults hauled in the larger catches to be weighed.

A prize pool of $10,000 was given out to the category winners as well as in spot prizes.

Shrove Tuesday is the traditional celebration before the fasting and penance of Lent, in the build-up to Easter in the Christian religious calendar.

Patience key on harvest roads

By Cathie Bell Police are encouraging vineyard contractors to make sure they are up to speed with road rules and to be tolerant and aware that motorists will be impatient as they drive slow harvesters and heavily-laden truck and trailer units during the pending grape harvest.

Harvest is expected to start in a few weeks with sparkling wine grapes, building up to the ‘sav-alanche’ in April.

Police senior constable Paul MacKenzie told about 50 contractors at a Wine Marlborough pre-harvest briefing last Friday that ‘everything has a silver lining’ and State Highway One over the Weld Pass is not going to be an issue this year ‘as no-one is there’.

State Highway One south of Ward is shut to traffic after the 7.8 magnitude earthquake on November 14 sent hundreds of tonnes of rock over the road, cutting off communities between Ward and Kaikoura. The high-

way is not expected to re-open until at least the end of this year.

Paul says no-one can predict what’s going to happen with SH63, the alternative route between Blenheim and Christchurch, but he encouraged drivers to take care, be patient, and to build in lots of time to do everything.

“As long as you’re doing everything right, especially at night, you’ll be fine… It’s up to the motoring public to get less impatient and get through.”

Roundabouts are an issue, as the turns can cause grapes to spill. He urges drivers to drive ‘really slowly’ through roundabouts because there is ‘always going to be someone wanting to cut in front of you’.

“Keep it in mind. Pull over if there is traffic behind you.”

Last year, there were ‘absolutely no issues’ with harvesting contractors, Paul says, and he has offered to go to work sites and talk to companies’ drivers about the requirements.

Fishy politics Dear Ed, Kahawai Ken’s concern for salmon falling victim to estuarine nets is not shared by all.

Salmon and trout are introduced species and as such have a negative impact on native marine fauna, especially trout, their predation being culpable in the extinction of the NZ grayling, last seen in the 1920s, and also denuding the adult white-bait breeding population resident in upcountry streams along with obscure and little researched bully species.

Market response the vulnerability of native species, may categorize these fish with all other noxious pests such as stoats, possums, and rabbits, so welcoming their demise by any means possible, at any time, morally ataraxic in their condemnation despite any ill-conceived legislation protecting acclimatised species.

Dear Ed, To ‘Girls on Tour’ and all the other people that came to our fantastic little town to enjoy the Market, usually held on the Friday before the Wine and Food Festival, there is a story behind ‘no huge market’.

Ted Laws has given his time and energy for many years bringing a great vibrancy to our streets with the Wine and Food Festival Market but he ran into many problems and this year he sadly decided to walk away.

The Artisan Market only heard about the ‘no market’ dilemma three weeks before the festival and decided to give it a go.

Having the full backing of the Marlborough District Council, we also went to each retailer in the area of the Forum explaining we were going to hold our Artisan Market on that Friday, we listened to their feedback and planned the market around their requests, almost all retailers were very supportive and loved having a local market right on their doorstep.

No it wasn’t a huge market, but the fare on sale was of really good quality and made by the sellers who

pride themselves on quality and workmanship Having to divide the market into two, in the Forum and Liz Davidson Park, on reflection wasn’t the best layout but keeping in mind it was the first time and done in less than three weeks it was the best we could do in the time we had, it would have been much better to have all in the Forum - a learning curve.

‘The Artisan Market’ received such lovely feedback on the day from satisfied customers and retailers alike and again on the following day when we held our market in Wynen Street carpark on Saturday.

We have put in a request to the council to have a road closure and have another go next year.

Blenheim needs these little boosts of interest to make locals, and tourists alike come to town, support our retailers that are there, in some cases seven days a week. It gives a new life and vibrancy to our fantastic little town, so please come along next year, we will have music, more stalls and all in one place.

Women’s prayer service preparing A special service for the World Day of Prayer this Friday is being prepared by women from several different Christian churches in Blenheim.

The service, to be held on Friday morning at St Andrew’s

in Henry Street, is prepared by the World Day of Prayer Committee in the Philippines, and in Blenheim, a group of Filipina women have gathered with women from the St Andrew’s parish to bring a special

character to the service.

Penguins return winners

By Celeste Alexander Four local children put their first aid skills to the test at a competition in Nelson recently and returned home with a number of placings.

In particular Hannah Richards and Helena Maher won overall and got three first placings and two first equals.

They are members of the ‘Penguins’ St John Youth Blenheim programme and went up against Stoke, Richmond and Havelock divisions, and was the first time they had competed.

They had to complete nine tests including first aid, communication and drill.

Division manager for St John Youth Blenheim Jane Donald says they were initially reluctant to take part but did extremely well and enjoyed their experience.

“Special thanks goes to their tutors Laurie Duncan and Kaleb Donald who also travelled with them, we are all so proud of their efforts,” Jane says.

The St John Youth Blenheim programme is looking to recruit new penguins (6-8 year olds) and holds regular meets on a Tuesday night from 5-6pm.

Oscar-finalist movie star working in vineyards

By Cathie Bell One of the main actors in the Oscar Award-nominated film Tanna is working in the vineyards of Marlborough.

Tanna, an Australian-Vanuatu co-production filmed entirely in the Nauvhal language, was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film, but missed out on Monday to Iranian film The Salesman.

Tawata Nangia features in the film, playing a pivotal role as a warrior from a neighbouring tribe whose actions set the movie’s Romeo-and-Juliet style lovers on their doomed path.

He is working in Marlborough for Vinepower, having worked for Vinepower owner and Marlborough man Jono Bushell’s Vanuatuan company, Tanna Farms.

The film is the first feature film shot entirely in Vanuatu, on Tanna, where Tanna Farms produces its coconut oil and peanut butter.

The heart and soul of the movie are Tawata’s people, from a remote, traditional ‘kastom’ Tanna village called Yakel. Here customs and lifestyles have changed little in centuries.

Men wear sheaths and women, grass skirts.

Life is traditional. Modern ways, for the most are rejected.

Until the filmmakers arrived, the community had never seen a movie let alone acted in one.

They were enthusiastic about filming their story based on a traditional Yakel song.

Tanna Farms partner Seth Kaurua says Tawata is a real traditional man who lives by kastom.

“He has never been to school.

He has traditional beliefs. He does not have an English name.

In Vanuatu, he could be one of the last people to not have an English name because of his real authentic ties to the custom of Tanna.”

Building traditional bamboo tree houses by hand are Tawata’s specialty, and his double story Yakel house is centre stage in the ‘Tanna’ movie, as is another at Tanna Farms.

From a traditional Yakel life, Tawata has been working as a gardener and carpenter for Tanna Farms, where his hard work impressed the company and he is working with Tanna Farms’ sister company, Vinepower, in the New Zealand wine and viticulture industry

under the Recognised Seasonal Employment Scheme.

Jono says the RSE scheme is economically empowering for RSE workers and positions with Vinepower are coveted.

The money RSE workers earn means their communities have funds for education and health.

“Tawata is in fact a fine example of ‘why’ we created Tanna Farms. He is working hard on his first RSE season in New Zealand, then he will head back home to Vanuatu where he knows he has work with us at Tanna Farms – a year-round supply of work has been developed.

“Tawata is a man of very little words. He only speaks his tribal language and doesn’t speak Bislama or English.

“He now knows a few words of English since being in New Zealand such as ‘good’, ‘thank you’ and ‘yes’ or ‘no’ but in the main his fellow RSE teammates translate for him while he is based overseas.”

“They tell us he is proud to be part of Vanuatu’s first feature film and even prouder to be part of the Tanna Farms and Vinepower teams,” Jono says.

Tribute for harvest driver and son

A Gisborne man who died with his son in a truck crash a month ago had worked three harvests as a truck driver in Marlborough.

Aaron McDonald, 37, and eight year-old Cruz McDonald died on January 23 when the truck and trailer they were in left State Highway 2 near Norsewood in central Hawke’s Bay in stormy conditions and plunged down a 30-metre cliff.

Picton friends Megan and Jonathan Rosene have set up a Givealittle fundraising campaign to help his widow Anah McDonald and their other son Rome, 6, pay for a special headstone to mark the grave, and to help the family financially in the future.

They knew Aaron and Anah from their time living in Gisborne, but there will be people in Marlborough who had met Aaron while he was driving trucks during harvest, Jonathan says.

“Aaron worked for Greaves Bulk Haulage of Gisborne, who would contract to Toll in Marlborough for harvest. He worked three

harvests, and used to stay at the Spring Creek Motels while he was here.”

Anah mentioned to Megan that she and Rome visited Aaron and Cruz’s grave at Patutahi Cemetary in Gisborne daily, but it was pretty difficult for a six-year-old to comprehend what it represented.

“It’s not a very special place for Rome to go to at the moment, and we were talking about how to make it a better experience for him.”

Megan has seen headstones in the shape of trucks in the United States, and is investigating options in different shapes and materials available in New Zealand and overseas.

She hopes the fundraiser will cover the costs of the headstone and anything extra would go to helping the family in the future.

Facades to be secured Two Marlborough streets have been listed by the Government as needing urgent work to secure unreinforced masonry facades and parapets.

Alfred Street and High Streets in Blenheim have been identified as needing to be secured within a year, among 38 streets from Hurunui to Wellington, Building and Construction Minister Dr Nick Smith says.

The Kaikoura Earthquake has increased the seismic risks in Blenheim, Hurunui, Wellington, and Lower Hutt over the next three years, he says.

“It is therefore prudent to require them to be secured and to help building owners with funding of these high-risk parapets and facades to secure them.”

Nick says the next step is for councils to formally notify the building owners affected, he says, and some owners may already have taken corrective work.

“The Government has established a $3 million fund to help building owners with the cost of securing the parapets and facades. I have talked to the mayors of the four councils involved and am pleased that all have confirmed that they will make financial contributions to this fund, bringing it to about $4.5m. The fund will be used to provide a 50 per cent subsidy for the work up to a maximum grant of $15,000 for a façade and $10,000 for a parapet to help building owners with the cost, estimated at $9m.”

The Government is using its powers under the Hurunui/Kaikoura Earthquakes Recovery Act 2016 to require building owners to do the necessary securing work within 12 months.

“Many of the building owners in these four districts will already be aware of the parapets and façades which need to be secured, but notices from councils to the owners will officially start the clock for the 12-month deadline for the securing work to be done,” Nick says.

“Falling unreinforced masonry is a major risk to people on the street during an earthquake as we saw in the 2011 Canterbury earthquake, when it claimed the lives of 39 people. It’s essential we’re proactive about this work so as to avoid a repeat of that terrible tragedy.”

Speedster breaks school record

By Cathie Bell Marlborough Boys’ College athlete Alex Dawson stamped his mark on the school sports day last week, smashing a 37 year-old record.

The speedster broke the record for the 100 metres run by 18 milli-seconds, cutting it from 11.40 to 11.22.

That record had stood at Marlborough Boys’ College since 1980.

Last year at the school’s athletics day, he cut .40 seconds from the 200m record time but then moved to concentrate on the shorter races.

The 100 metres race is the 16 year-old’s speciality now, followed by the 60 metres race.

“For the 60m, it’s more about pure speed, it’s not so much endurance work. With the 100m, it’s a balance between pure speed and speed endurance. It becomes more on the pure speed at the end of the race.”

The speed racing ‘came upon’ him, Alex says, with him getting into it when he was 13, and progressing from there.

He is aiming to do better, and already competes nationally.

“I started going to advance meets consistently and just trying to go further.

“It gets you going, that’s for sure.”
