Many in Marlborough have been forced to take steps to protect butterfly caterpillars from predatory wasps this season.

But Yealands Wine Company gardener James Morison says conditions are good for the insects living in plantings in the company’s Butterfly Gully.

Butterflies boom in plantings Continued from page 1 Social media posts from people in Blenheim say the paper wasps get a lot of the Monarch butterfly eggs and caterpillars unfortunately.

Some people say they “go to great length” to pick up the caterpillars whenever they find one and transfer them to a plant kept indoors.

“I found four eggs today on my bush so they are inside,” says one post.

Springlands School has a special enclosed area for caterpillars and butterfly chrysalis to be transferred to so that they are protected from pests.

Principal Gaylene Beattie says the school has lots of swan plants around its grounds and wasps have been a problem.

Yealands gardener James Morison suggests that people’s swan plants are also under attack from aphids.

These are usually a mustard colour and will decimate plants, he says.

They appear to put the Monarchs off but are easily controlled with

soapy water sprayed over the whole infected plant and then repeated two days later. Transferred caterpillars should then be fine.

He works full time looking after Butterfly Gully.

It’s all about implementing Yealands’ founder Peter Yealands’ vision, James says.

A couple of years ago Peter planted lots of Swan plants and native plants in the gully and it has now become a popular picnic spot for visitors to the winery.

On calm days, 30 to 40 butterflies can be seen at one time. James says the growth in the gully is great, and next year there will be even more plant food and butterflies to be enjoyed.

“My dream is that you come round the corner, and spook the chickens.

They run up the hill, and boom!

Contest experience valuable for Matt

By Cathie Bell Competing in the national barista championship was a great experience, Watery Mouth Café barista Matt Wright says.

He came 14th overall in last month’s competition, which was the largest and most fiercely competitive event year, organisers say.

“It was an exciting experience, I learnt so much.”

There were 19 competitors for the event, held in Wellington, and Matt was the only one from the South Island.

He says it was a very intense competition, with a champion from Denmark and two national champions competing.

“It was most fiercely contested. There were two points between the top two, and it was the most competitors they’ve ever had.”

Matt says the judges spent 20 minutes with him afterwards, and gave him advice.

“They praised me for my lack of wastage. I had the least wastage in the competition.”

He would like to compete again next year.

“Big thanks to Watery Mouth Café owner Juliet Partington, dairy supplier Russell, and Underground Coffee for helping me get there.

It was brilliant.”

Pak‘nSave’s 3rd birthday Story and photo by Cathie Bell Pak’nSave Blenheim is turning three on Friday, but owner-operators Mark Elkington and Andrea Boock want shoppers to leave their presents at home and come celebrate with them and staff to mark the milestone.

The time has passed in a flash, Andrea says. It seems like only last week the store opened.

“It really is true that time passes quickly when you enjoy what you are doing. We have enjoyed every minute of the past three years and we are looking forward to the next phase in the store’s continued growth.”

Mark and Andrea acknowledge the “tremendous support” they have received from the community and believe the store’s birthday celebration is a great way to say thank you to customers.

“We have learnt so much by listening to our customers to find out what they really

Labour to select early The Labour Party has opened nominations for it’s candidate for the Kaikoura Electorate for next year’s General Election.

Electorate chairman Corey Hebberd says the electorate has been chosen by the Labour Party as one of the first five electorates to start nominations.

“Being one of the first in New Zealand to begin this process is a clear endorsement by the Party of the capability of our volunteers in this electorate.”

Vernon scrub fire tamed A scrub fire on Marlborough’s Vernon Station to the south east of Blenheim is still burning but fire fighters are hopeful they can keep it contained within the gully where it began on Saturday.

Three dozen ground crew and five helicopters have been at the scene since daybreak each day.

Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority principal rural fire officer Richard McNamara says the fire has been held within its perimeter and conditions at present are helping as there is very little wind.

The fire is estimated to have burned through about 25 hectares.

MGC student ANZAC speech finalist Marlborough Girls’ College student Stephanie Simpson has won a place in the ANZ RSA Cyril Bassett VC Speech Competition national final.

Stephanie won the Nelson/ Marlborough/Westland regional final with what was described as a moving ANZAC tribute.

The senior student will go on to compete against seven other Year 12 and 13 regional finalists at the national final in Wellington on 23 March, with the overall winner travelling to Gallipoli for 2016 ANZAC Day commemorations.

Returned Services Association national president BJ Clark says there has been a fantastic level of interest in the competition.

“We are especially grateful to ANZ for the commitment they

“It’s positive to see so many contestants speaking on and sharing their experiences of the Anzac spirit, as it relates to them.”

The competition is a tribute to Cyril Bassett, VC (1892-1983) – the only New Zealander at Gallipoli to be awarded the Victoria Cross, and one who worked his entire career at ANZ Group.

As well as the trip to Gallipoli for the 2016 ANZAC Day commemorations, the national winner will also be awarded a $1000 travel fund, a trophy, a laptop computer and digital camera.

The eight regional winners will receive $1000 prize money as well as another $1000 for their school and a place in the national final.

“We’re doing 140 today, but that’s quite a low order.

“This one is a much better improvement. It has an even temperature.”

Blenheim Menz Shed chairman Jim Davis told the 25 people gathered to officially open the building that the shed was a place where local men can meet, work, and share experiences.

“And most importantly – talk.”

Jim says Menz Sheds are fast being recognised as vital, viable places to provide relaxed, happy, creative spaces for men of all ages to enjoy.

“They provide activity, identity, and meaning for great numbers of retired, active, creative, enthusiastic men.

The growing problems with men’s health, isolation, loneliness and depression are looming as major health issues. Menz Sheds can play a significant and practical role in addressing these.”

Shed activities in Blenheim have mainly included woodworking and woodturning as well as some community work, he says.

“Members have expressed an interest in mechanical work, light engineering, and welding, and that’s why we’re here to open our new extension specifically for this purpose, as sawdust and mechanics don’t go well together.”

He thanked the group’s sponsors who had enabled the extension to be built debt-free.

The dilemma confronting the Marlborough Sounds firstly and foremost is how to stop the destruction of the marine habitats, and secondly how we re-establish fish and other marine populations.

Artificial reefs are manmade habitats that create new marine communities providing food, shelter and spawning areas for the hundreds of marine species looking for a home.

To clarify this, Western Australian Minister of Fisheries Ken Baston reports where there were 12 fish species before reef installation now two years later 50 fish species exist, and the Malaysian Director General of Fisheries reported artificial reefs installed under their fishery plan to boost fish harvests to 2 million tonnes annually has resulted in fishermen’s income per trip has being than tripled as far

Maths Dear Ed, Well it looks like the Mayor has finally got it right at long last when he states that the theatre is an ambitious project for a district the size of Marlborough.

But his maths leaves a bit to be desired when he states only a quarter of the cost comes from ratepayers.

Five million was handed out before the Trust raised the balance of 17 million (12 million).

Six million for the old theatre to house the library and art gallery (yeah right).

Land and roadway for the new theatre site, must be around one million. Now that’s 12 million. Over half.

Then there’s the ASB loans, 4.6 million which the rate payers are bound to pickup.

Besides Government and ratepayers the Trust have only raised 1.77 million and that’s in IOUs. When the posh-nosh grand opening happens who’s going to pay, seeing as the Trust is broke?

And who will be invited? All ratepayers!!

The reserves the Mayor talks about should be used for major infrastructure, such as decent water for the likes of Seddon, Renwick, Havelock etc.

Tasman Rugby Union Dear Ed, Just following up statements made in your newspaper recently (Text talk).

Regards to the first aid issue - a first aid truck is highly visible during Super or Mitre 10 Cup matches at Lansdowne Park and has been in the same site for the past two years and there was also a first aid crew assigned to the public stands on the opposite side of the grounds.

This is communicated by the ground announcer at matches as well.

Regards the ticket booking fee of $4.50 this was a mistake by our ticketing providers at a particular outlet in Blenheim and was beyond the control of Tasman Rugby.

Only tickets sold at this particular outlet on February 19th were charged the $4.50.

All other tickets sold at an outlet or online were charged a $1.50 booking fee or $2 booking fee if tickets were purchased on the day at Lansdowne Park.

Tasman Rugby advises all customers the ticket price plus the booking fee when advertising tickets online.

The booking fee goes to our ticketing provider not Tasman Rugby.

Booking fees are normal on almost all ticketed events.

Any ticket purchasers that want to get a refund on their $4.50 booking fee would need to have proof of their ticket and then email info@makos.co.nz and they will then be referred onto our ticket provider who will review their purchase.

Tasman Rugby always appreciates feedback and luckily, apart from the attached feedback, all of our feedback from the Crusaders versus Hurricanes match on Feb 19th has been very positive.

Beryl’s life adventure In the late 1930’s Blenheim woman Beryl Dickson was the first school dental nurse ever to be sent to the Pelorus Sound.

Today she still resides in Marlborough and recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

Beryl shares some of her memories with reporter Celeste Alexander.

Beryl was one of three children, born in Stratford in 1916 to parents Archibald and Ellen Pike.

Archibald was a ‘wonderful’ musician and choirmaster, so much so that his sister who lived in South Africa, travelled to Dresden in Germany to select a piano for him.

The Ernst Kaps, an iron frame upright grand piano was brought out to New Zealand for him in the early 1920’s.

What is unique about this piano is that in one night of bombing during World War II, three piano factories were destroyed including the Ernst Kaps factory.

Beryl inherited this piano and has kept both hers, and her father’s sheet music in the piano stool.

Growing up Beryl attended the Martinborough District High School where she became Dux, before completing her senior education at Nelson Girls’ College.

She then took a gap year in the Wairarapa before taking up training in Wellington to become a school dental nurse.

After graduating in 1938 she was posted to Marlborough where she worked in the clinics at the Blenheim Borough School, Picton Primary School and Rai Valley School.

She was then sent to Wellington to be trained to fill permanent anterior teeth before her ‘big adventure’, a posting as the first school dental nurse ever to be sent to the Pelorus Sound to open new territory for childrens’ dental care.

She recalls taking the Wellington/Nelson ferry as far as French Pass, climbing down a rope ladder on the side of the ship in the dark of midnight,

stepping into a rocking and pitching launch with her equipment, to be taken to shore.

“Make sure the launch is on the rise before you jump, I was advised,” she says.

The next day her equipment was dragged up the beach on a sledge pulled by a horse.

Beryl set up her clinics in peoples’ kitchens and boiled her instruments on the wood stoves.

She carried out a number of extractions as well as filling cavities.

While working in Blenheim Beryl met her husband Grahame Dickson and they were married in 1941.

Grahame soon began training in preparation for war service and went on to be a navigator on Lancaster bombers with 75 squadron.

After returning safely from the war Grahame became the accountant/manager of F.E Musgrove Ltd, and the couple built their home in Blenheim, the same home where Beryl still lives.

Beryl swapped her dental equipment for a role at the Electrocardiography Department at Wairau Hospital as a technician where she worked for 10 years.

She recounts crawling about under operating tables to attach her leads to the patient.

Beryl and Grahame’s daughter Pamela went on to follow in her mother’s footsteps, working in the same dental field.

Today Beryl is a proud grandparent and great A horse-drawn sledge carrying Beryl’s dental equipment in the Pelorus Sound. grandparent and is very close with her family.

With a very similar ring to them, Olivia and Oliver have topped the list of most popular names for new-born girls and boys in 2015.

The most popular Maori baby names in 2015 were Maia for girls and Nikau for boys.

With over 62,500 births recorded in 2015, more than 13,900 unique first names were registered for children born last year. The top 100 names makes up only a small proportion of all names given to babies, with the wide range used often reflecting the importance of family heritage, personal choice or the influence of popular culture, says Jeff Montgomery, Registrar-General of Births,

Then take the whole family along to the Flaxbourne A&P Show in Ward on Easter Sunday, March 27.

The Flaxbourne A&P Association has a huge lineup of spectator events, family friendly entertainment and of course displays that will appeal to all ages.

Association secretary Bernadette Gilmore says the show is usually set for the fourth Sunday of March, and this year it has fallen on Easter weekend.

“With it being Easter weekend people might be looking for something to do. It’s not a huge drive to get out here and there will be plenty to keep people entertained for the day,” she says.

The annual agricultural and pastoral show is in its 91st year and has a huge following of people near and far who come to compete.

This includes the shearing and equestrian events which attracts people from as far as North Canterbury.

But it’s not only the competitors who return every year, there is strong support from the Marlborough community.

The young, old and people from all walks of life are catered for as the show promises to entertain and even educate those who attend.

For the youth it’s not only the animals they can see and touch or the carnival rides and sideshows, it’s also a chance to experience the country life.

They can also try their hand at bumper

cars, watch the dog and equestrian events and enjoy hot food and sweets throughout the day.

While the children are amused, the adults can walk around the stalls that will have a huge variety of wares for sale, talk to the agricultural experts about farm machinery or simply relax and watch the live demonstrations.

The Flaxbourne A&P Show promises to be a great family day out, so pack a picnic blanket and head along to Weld Park from 8:30am.

Entry costs $5 for adults, $3 for secondary students and primary preschool children are free.

Spouse challenge guaranteed to entertain Gather your wives, husbands, neighbour or even a friend for the ‘Spouse Carrying Competition’.

This is one event that promises to entertain and create a few laughs.

Each team consists of two people, one wife and one husband.

The wife is carried and the husband is the carrier, regardless of the actual marital status or gender.

Team members do not have to be married to compete, in fact the husband may carry their own wife, husband, girlfriend, boyfriend, friend or someone found further afield.

Both contestants must be 18 years or older and the entry fee is $20 on the day. Some teams may have already registered.

The minimum weight of spouse to be carried is 50kg, and weights can be added if the spouse is under this weight.

Introduced to the show a number of years ago, the Iron Man Competition is a popular event for those participating and the crowds that gather to watch.

The competition sees a team of four compete in four separate legs, showing off their strength and skills.

One team member must pedal a bike to power a shearing machine, while another shears a sheep.

The wool is then rolled to the shearing shed while the remaining two team members cut through a log of wood with a cross cut saw.

There is $200 in prize money and goods up for grabs, so get your team together and enter on the day.

Entertainment lineup From dogs, shearing and tractors through to photography and art, the Flaxbourne A&P Show has a huge line up of attractions throughout the day.

Starting at 8:30am the equestrian events kick off. Find yourself a seat ringside and watch local and visiting riders compete in a variety of classes.

At 12:30pm a Grand Parade will be held and following that will be the Terrier Race.

Another canine event that draws crowds is the Handy Dog Challenge, organised by the Flaxbourne Dog Trial Club.

Sheep numbers are up on last year, back to where they have been in the past and horse numbers are also sitting at a normal level, after last year’s huge numbers. Riders will be coming from the Nelson area to join local competitors.

During the afternoon will be the Iron Man and Spouse Carrying competitions which are hugely popular events and great entertainment for spectators.

Child Cancer Appeal Month March 2016

‘No child or their family walking the childhood cancer journey should ever feel alone’

Support local appeal Marlborough branch collecting donations Story and photo by Celeste Alexander Every week in New Zealand more than three families are told the devastating news that their child has cancer.

This can be a very scary and stressful time for the whole family but luckily there is support available.

The Child Cancer Foundation has a Marlborough branch, headed by original member and chairperson Sue Rose.

Sue’s daughter was diagnosed with cancer in 1986 and passed away the next year.

She recalls at the time a number of other families experiencing a similar ordeal.

“There were quite a few at that time and although the staff at the hospital were fantastic, I wish there had been a support group in place.

“So a couple of others and I set up a support group so we could get together and had our first meeting in 1987 at the Red Cross rooms,” she says.

Sue later left the region for 26 years but kept in regular touch with the group, especially as her mother Betty Forman is a member.

Five months ago since retiring, Sue has returned to Marlborough and stepped back into the chairperson’s seat.

“It’s so different now to what it was, there’s so much support!

“The whole reason for starting this group was so no one had to go through what we did, and now they don’t have to. We are here if families need us,” she says.

Sue is supported by her committee and heading this week’s annual appeal drive is Vicky Neal, committee secretary, appeal co-ordinator and regional representative.

A woman with many titles, Vicky joined the branch three years ago after her own personal experience with child cancer.

“Five years ago my son was diagnosed with the very rare ‘Langerhans Cell Histiocytosis’ (LCH) at the age of 10 months old. It was lucky he didn’t require chemotherapy.

“We received an envelope from the hospital which had the contact details for the local branch. “’What I found comforting was knowing that someone was there for us, supporting us and our family.

Now I want to give back by helping other families,” she says.

Vicky says it’s her ‘passion’ because the Foundation does not receive Government funding.

“We rely on donations so I see my role as trying to co-ordinate as much support as I can,” she says.

One thing Vicky will be doing is dressing as a super hero this Saturday to stand at supermarkets with a collection bucket.

“Any donation, big or small will go a long way to helping support a family during a difficult time,” she says.

Around 20 Marlborough branch volunteers will be collecting donations this Thursday, Friday and Saturday at local supermarkets, so please support the Child Cancer Annual Appeal Month.

Donation of $800 received Representatives of the English Masonic Lodge Rowdy Robertson (Master) and Chris Hobbs (Secretary) attended the monthly meeting of the Child Cancer Foundation in Blenheim last week and presented them with a cheque for $800 which was raised by the Freemasons specifically for a charity.

This year it was agreed that the money raised be given to the Child Cancer Foundation to assist with their childrens picnic.

Child cancer representatives who accepted the gift were Sue Rose (chairperson) and Barbara Thompson (treasurer).

“The money we raise means that if a Marlborough family needs financial assistance it’s there. Whether it be food vouchers or even travel assistance, we aim to help in any way we can,” Vicky says.

Who we are Child Cancer Foundation’s mission is that every child and their family walking the child cancer journey will never feel alone.

Family Support Co-ordinators offers each child and their family one-on-one targeted and practical assistance as well as a shoulder to lean on when times are tough.

The branch commitee provides much needed peers support to families by connecting them within the community, and organising social events and activities that give children and families opportunities to talk, mix and make new friends.

Branch committees largely comprise of parents who have been in a similar situation, so can share their experiences and offer support.

It was lovely renewing this year’s entry as we had achieved a lot of our goals and surpassed many of our targets.

What benefits are there for you and your customers in the awards?

For us it is updating the business plan and comparing our results. We feel that a business with a plan in the background can offer its customers consistency and forward planning. Hospitality is such a fast paced industry and having a plan means you can continue the long hours at a fast pace knowing you are not heading in the wrong direction.

What have you learned about yourself and your business?

We were nervous about taking on a rural restaurant, but we stayed true to our personalities and style and we feel Marlborough has embraced that.

We are so thankful to the region for keeping our staff employed and also helping us achieve our dreams of running charity events through our own business.

We’ve learnt that with consistency and a high quality of food and service, matched with fair pricing, we can make a rural, standalone restaurant work.

We will never be rich, but Marlborough is a place where looking out at the views, with a plate of delicious local produce and a glass of wine on your table you can still feel like a king!

Phillip Sweet, from the Queen Street Garage. Born into a farming family in Cornwall, UK, I spent my youth on the farm and playing cricket for my local village and later for Cornwall.

I served my apprenticeship in a rural garage where I worked for 18 years before coming to New Zealand.

What do you do?

A little over two years ago I bought the run down Service Station on Queen Street.

Since then, all my efforts have gone into reviving this historical station.

The workshop is now fully functional and increasing clientele weekly.

At the moment there is little time for anything else.

Why have you entered the Business Awards?

A suggestion from a few customers prompted the ball rolling and we thought, because

of our concentration of customer service that we owe it to our customers and I owe it to my dedicated team who have made a huge contribution to the success of the business to enter these awards.

Charity convoy helps out

By Cathie Bell The Variety Trillian Bash launched into a busy week of South Island school visits by rolling up its collective sleeves for a working bee at tiny Waitaria Bay School.

The remote Marlborough Sounds School has only eight pupils and a part-time caretaker.

With parents already commuting some distance over farmland to take their kids to school, they struggle to keep the grounds maintained, and welcomed the arrival of the Variety Bashers on Monday morning.

The crews got stuck in installing insulation beneath the main building, mowing the rugby pitch, weeding, painting, moving the shade house, clearing sheds and building garden beds.

The kids were away on a school trip, so the working bee was a surprise.

Several got a surprise of a different kind when they passed through Portage on their way home from the school trip, and stopped off for a magic show put on by Australian magician Super Hubert, a Bash veteran who flies in each year to join the New Zealand event.

Yesterday saw the Bash visit Linkwater School’s 40 kids, then Havelock School, Canvastown School, and Rai Valley School for lunch.

Rare gull not ordinary

By Angela Crompton New Zealand’s black-billed gull is “not just another gull”, according to Canadian ornithologist Claudia Mischler.

In fact, it is one of the world’s most threatened gull species and she hopes to raise awareness of its plight with talks in Picton and Blenheim this week.

Claudia works for Marlborough-based Wildlife Management International Ltd (WMIL) and has set herself a personal goal to help conserve the endemic blackbilled gull.

She says its numbers have decreased nationally by 78 per cent in the past 30 years and by 83 per cent in Southland, the birds’ largest breeding region.

The Wairau and Clarence rivers in Marlborough are two of the braided rivers the gulls use for breeding in other parts of the South Island during the summer months. For the rest of the year they hang out around the coast, Claudia says.

“One of the really neat things about the gulls is that they can be spotted almost anywhere,” she says.

The Picton foreshore, Taylor River and Pollard Park in Blenheim are three common locations.

Useful information can be gathered about the black-billed gulls’ movements if sightings are reported (email claudia@ wmil.co.nz), along with the bird’s leg band code (a letter and two numbers).

Claudia, whose studies have included seabirds in many different countries, wants black-bill gulls to enjoy the same status as other endangered birds like kiwi, kakapo, takahe and black stilt.

“People in Marlborough can lead the way. We are lucky to have them living in our region, and we need to start taking care of them. Once they are gone, they are forever gone.

Dragon Boat team up with the best

By Cathie Bell Marlborough’s breast cancer survivor dragon boating team has had success teaming up with a similar Australian team and competing together in a competition in Wellington earlier this month.

Spokeswoman Wendie Partner says the Simply the Breast Dragon Boat team Marlborough linked up with our Australian sisters to form a composite breast cancer survivor team which was named “5 Abreast”.

She says the competition on March 5 was the first time the team had paddled together as a group but they ‘clicked’ and performed very well.

“Wellington lived up to its reputation with officials describing the weather conditions as “half metre swell with wind chop.’’

The swell was from the side

with gusting swirling winds making paddling very challenging indeed.”

Adjustments were made to the team line up throughout the day due to the conditions, Wendie says.

After the first heat and in an attempt to make the boats more buoyant, the event officials made the call to reduce the paddlers in the boats to 16 instead of 20.

This was later increased to 18 paddlers and remained at this number for the remainder of the event.

Altogether, seven boats were swamped by waves during the course of the day, including 5 Abreast, she says.

“Luckily for us, our sinking did not happen until the very end of the day, after our final.

Thankfully no one was hurt and we learnt heaps from the experience.”

Ella jumping for joy The Blenheim Canine Training Club held a Dog Agility Ribbon Trial at the A&P Showgrounds last Sunday and the event attracted entrants from all over Marlborough and Nelson.

Nearly 40 dogs competed for honours and the youngest competitor was 10 year old Blenehim girl Ella Gould, with her dog Sprocket.

This was Ella’s first ever event and she was thrilled with how well her dog ran.

“It’s great to see such a competent young handler coming through our ranks”, said club spokesperson Jenny Everest.

“Ella has come from obedience training and has moved into agility now and we are delighted with her progress and dedication.”
