Mum’s hero

By Jacob Page Lyn Spice believes the quick thinking of her nine-year-old son Eli saved her life as she drifted in and out of consciousness on the couch late one night.

Lyn has lived with diabetes for 32 years and she had come home from a busy shift late one night after months of feeling unwell.

As she drifted in and out of consciousness due to hypoglycaemia, Eli was able to grab the cell phone, dial the code to unlock the phone and get his Dad to come and help.

Not that Lyn can remember much of the incident.

Eli was given a bravery award by Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman last night.

Eli cracks the code to call for help Continued from page 1 “Apparently I was acting weird according to Eli, all I can remember is coming too and not being able to speak well.

“He had noticed I was flapping around like a dying fish,” Lyn says.

“I thought she was asleep,” Eli says.

“I was scared so I got her a whole packet of sugar.

“She was just lying on the couch.”

Eli says he knew something was wrong but initially thought his mum was asleep.

Eli worked out his mum needed sugar from her mumbling words and in an effort to be helpful brought over a 3kg bag of it.

“I said sugar and he thought ‘I know where that is’,” Lyn laughs.

“I have no recollection of events; it really caught me out…Had Eli not thought quickly I think I would have been dead.

“He didn’t want to lose mum…I was desperate for him to help me but I just couldn’t voice it.

“He held it together really well.”

Eli’s dad, Rob says he was proud of his son.

“I realised from the phone conversation that Lyn had a bad low so Eli met me out at the front gate at I went from there.

“She was incoherent and sweating yet shivering like crazy.”

Rob says Eli’s time spent this year in the Woodbourne Cubs has helped him gain confidence as a person while teaching him life skills.

Environment Court judges take tour of sacred site

By Laura Shipley Environment Court judges were on the site of the first settlement in New Zealand during their annual conference, in Marlborough.

A group of seven judges and 15 commissioners were hosted by members of the Rangitane iwi.

They took a trip out to Te Pokohiwi Settlement on the Wairau Bar. Te Pokohiwi is an archaeological site where the first settlement in New Zealand is found.

When human remains and artefacts were first found there they were taken to different museums around New Zealand but now the remains have been re buried as close as possible to where they

were originally found.

The land has been named a site of historical significance and is now protected.

Development manager Richard Bradley says it was a chance to show the party a key historic site and give them a better understanding of its significance in New Zealand history “It was just an opportunity to take the Environment Court to the country’s first village.”

Principal Environment Court Judge Laurie Newhook says the trip was impressive and very moving.

“It was very moving, very special to hear the stories of the people.”

Opportunity for young people Marlborough youth with bright ideas are being encouraged to apply for a share of the $120,000 Opportunity for Young People fund.

“The funding will be awarded to youth with clever and achievable ideas that will make a social or environmental difference,” Kaikoura MP Stuart Smith says.

“By working on projects they have designed, young people develop valuable decision-making skills and confidence.

“To qualify for support, the applicant must be aged between 12 to 24 years and have a social enterprise idea they want to make a reality,” Mr Smith says.

Wine delegates head to China

By Jacob Page A small group of Marlborough wine industry figures are in China, aiming to lay the groundwork for a long-term relationship between this region and China’s emerging wine-making province, Ningxia.

Ningxia province is about 800km west of Beijing and its wine industry has been growing rapidly since the 1990s. It has 34,000ha in grapes compared with Marlborough’s 23,000ha of vines and is now the fifth largest grape-growing area in the world with plans to double its size over 10 years. French wine industry leaders LVMH and Pernod Ricard each have a presence there.

A 17-member delegation from Ningxia visited Marlborough earlier this year primarily to look at wine tourism and marketing but discussions extended to wine making technology and vineyard management and the opportunity that exists there for Marlborough

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman says there is long-term potential for Marlborough in the areas of viticulture, winemaking, the associated technology and wine education.

“Developing a trusted relationship with China will take time but there appears to be genuine interest on both sides in the potential for mutually beneficial exchanges.

“We think this approach fits well with the New Zealand Government’s interest in growing business and personal links between the two countries and we have kept Foreign Affairs and Trade officials informed of our plans,” the Mayor said.

The Ningxia Wine Bureau is hosting the visit, meeting the cost of accommodation and transport in China.

Mobility scooter ride Lynne Nicholl will be riding her mobility scooter from Blenheim to St Arnaud (Rotoiti) and return, over a three day period, covering 210km, in an attempt to raise funds for the two new ambulances that are needed by St John Marlborough.

Queen Street open day New health hub opens to the public Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Queen Street will be humming with activity this Saturday when the Community Health Hub holds its open day to show the public who is there and what they do.

Co-ordinating the event is Liz Collyns of Bullyfree Marlborough who says the event titled ‘Celebrate Spring in Queen Street’ is aimed at showcasing everything that Queen Street has to offer, including the Community Health Hub’s services.

“People have been curious about the Hub for a while now after seeing all the work going on, so we are encouraging people to go on the guided tours and have a look for themselves,” she says.

In planning the Hub’s open day, Liz approached all of the Queen Street businesses to be involved and says the feedback was really positive.

A competition will be held with participating businesses displaying a tulip sign in their windows, so people seeing it know to go inside and find the ‘clue’.

Staff will give people a stamp to say they have visited and once all collected, they then return to the Hub and collect their prize.

“It’s a really fun way for people to visit and interact with these businesses,” she says.

Supporting the open day, many of Queen Street’s businesses will have their doors open and welcome people to call in, meet staff and take advantage of their instore specials.

There will also be entertainment and bouncy castles in the Liz Davidson Square for families to enjoy, including buskers, food and displays.

The event runs from 10am - 2pm.

Liz Collyns of Bullyfree Marlborough is co-ordinating an event in Queen Street this Saturday to celebrate the opening of the Community Health Hub.

Theatre fundraising surges ahead More than $400,000 has been raised for the new ASB Theatre in Blenheim in just a few days.

The tally came a week after the launch of the final campaign to raise $2M in two months to fit out the theatre with specialist equipment.

Theatre Trust fundraising manager Ross Anderson says he is delighted that almost half a million has been pledged in such a short time.

It is an amazing response, although there is still a long way to go, he says.

“With this kind of support I am absolutely confident we will reach our target,’’ he says.

“The people of Marlborough are always so generous with projects for the community, and the theatre is going to have so many benefits for the whole region.

Community spirit alive in planting More than a dozen Marlburians along with council staff helped plant more than 250 native plants on Harling Ridge, above Harling Park.

The effort at Harling Ridge at the Wither Hills Farm Park was a community working bee to replace wattles with native species.

Council amenities officer Robin Dunn says the community up there was really supportive; watering the area after planting and even supplying morning tea.

The target $2M will be used for lighting, sound and other stage equipment for the theatre, which is scheduled to be ready for use early next year.

The roof of the main auditorium is almost closed in and will be completed after heavy materials have been lifted into the building by crane.

The construction crew are building the tiers in the sloped auditorium floor that will hold the 700-plus seats being made

for the theatre.

The seats are the focus of the final fund-raising campaign. Seats in sections of the auditorium are being ‘’sold’’ for between $1500 (bronze) and $10,000 (platinum). These packages give the buyer their name on a seat or on a donation board in the foyer, and 24-hour early booking rights for events at the theatre.

All the packages can be paid as a lump sum or paid in easy instalments over three years.

Flagging support Dear Ed, There is plenty of debate at present over the New Zealand flag.

Next year the referendum will decide on either the old flag or one of the new ones.

We have now been presented with 3 versions of the fern and a koru design.

These were chosen by a committee (and not by any of us).

It seems that the Prime Minister strongly favours a fern on our new flag.

Perhaps it’s no surprise then, that three of their selections feature a fern.

Now there is intense debate over a design that did not make the final four -the red peak- and there is a petition to have this design included in the referendum.

But government officials claim that the final selection is law and has been passed by par-

liament, therefore this will not be rescinded.

How convenient for the PM and his three ferns.

I feel as though we are being railroaded into choosing a new flag that the PM wants.

While I am not adverse to a new design as I do think the current one is too often confused with Australia’s flag, I am deeply concerned by the lack of transparency of the current selection process.

Any flag change should be because of the free will of the people and not because we were herded into a decision to select something that just one man wants.

I will only vote for a flag that I want and I will only vote for a politician I want.

When our elected leaders lose their democratic integrity, perhaps their time is up.

The New Zealand Breast Cancer Foundation is enlisting volunteers to help with its Pink Ribbon Street Appeal on Friday October 9 and Saturday October 10.

October is Breast Cancer month, and to highlight the importance of supporting this fundraiser a plea has gone out for volunteers to “Give two hours” and sign up for just their own two-hour stint on the street, or to rope in friends, workmates or a community group to hold street collections.

The annual collection raises money at more than 1000 collection points, covering New Zealand top to bottom.

Volunteers’ efforts will fund research into new targeted treatments and clinical trials, support for women going through breast cancer, medical equipment for our hospitals,

and life-saving awareness and education programmes around the importance of mammograms for early detection.

“If you can help, please get in touch with us now,” Van Henderson, chief executive of the NZ Breast Cancer Foundation says.

Life through a lens Ricky Wilson is an inspiring young photographer who you’ve probably seen at many Marlborough events in the past 12 months.

Fresh out of Marlborough Boys’ College, he has just become a finalist for the New Zealand Geographic Photographer of the Year in the Society and Culture category.

He talks to Sun reporter Laura Shipley about life behind the camera, his goals and what he does to keep improving.

“I had to enter 10 photos” he says.

“I just entered that one to make it up to 10.”

The winner will be announced at an awards ceremony in Auckland on 29 October.

Ricky finished year 13 at Marlborough Boys’ College last year and is now in his first year at Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology studying business and aims to stay in Marlborough and set up his own photography business in the future.

When asked what it was he liked about photography he says, “It allows me to document the things that are happening in the world.”

He says he likes meeting new people, doing landscapes and the rush of doing sport photography.

“I do love doing sport.”

Ricky Wilson got his first camera 10 years ago when he was going on a school trip.

He says it was growing up in a region with such amazing scenery that inspired him to do photography.

He was also encouraged by his art teacher who really pushed him to better his photography skills.

Ricky is a member of the Marlborough Camera Club and getting advice from other members really helped him learn about photography.

When Ricky found out he was a finalist for the NZ Geographic Photographer of the Year in the Society and Culture Category he was shocked.

“I looked at all the other finalists and thought why am I in this category?”

The photo that was a finalist was of the Muddy Buddy fun run in Havelock.

His advice for people who want to get into photography is “practice shooting photos every weekend.”

He says it’s important to try new things to find the one you like.

“The best thing to do is don’t stop taking photos.” he says “I take my camera everywhere with me”.

He also suggested finding a mentor to help you learn about photography like the members from the Marlborough Camera Club.

Building up a portfolio is important and taking photos for Marlborough Boys’ College helped him a lot with this.

“I wouldn’t be at Shuttersport if it wasn’t for the support I got from them (Marlborough Boys’ College).”

He has been working with them for two years now.

Ricky has a selection of cameras but the one he uses the most is the Canon 1D Mark 3, he has a 17-40 lens and a 70-200 lens.

To get his job at Shuttersport Ricky says it was about asking for an opportunity.

“I just asked if they needed anyone else to take photos for them and they said yes, send us a portfolio.”

Indoor centre’s milestone

By Jacob Page It is fair to say the Fitzpatrick family know how to reinvent themselves and their business.

Dorothy Fitzpatrick has been the face of the indoor sport business for 30 years, along with husband Brian and admits she never expected the job to last so long.

The Fitzpatrick story began in 1985 as an indoor cricket centre located on New Renwick Road in Blenheim.

In 2003 they had to briefly close down and for the next two years they searched for a new facility.

In 2005 they purchased the old sawmill on Battys Road and set about converting it into the indoor sports facility now known as Simcox Stadium.

Expansion has always been the name of the game.

“The last 10 years here has been busy,” Dorothy says. “It’s been interesting the fluctuations in business and it’s been a

learning curve with all of the expansion that we’ve done.

“We didn’t expect it to grow as it has but if we hadn’t done the 10-pin bowling (in 2011) then we probably wouldn’t be here.”

“Because we like sport and we love the people side of it we’ve stuck at it.

“We’ve got one team that plays netball who did so at the old centre.”

“It’s been great to watch people grow up and watch generations of families play together throughout the years.

“When we closed the one in New Renwick Road we thought that was going to be it but one of Brian’s friends went in partnership with the building and that made us do it because he kept pestering us because he said we were needed.”

The Plunket Redwoodtown group is hosting its annual fundraising ‘Baby and Child Gear Sale’ this Saturday at the St Christophers Anglican Church on Weld Street from 9am - 12noon.

Items on sale include everything from clothing and toys through to baths and cots.

There will also be a cafe selling refreshments and home baking.

Committee member Lesya Dawes who also runs the Plunket Redwoodtown Playgroup says all proceeds from the sale will go directly to Plunket Marlborough.

“It’s a great way for people to have a clear out at home, sell unwanted baby and child gear all the while helping out a worthwhile organisation.

“The money will go back into a range of projects that Plunket provides to the community.

It’s also a great opportunity for people to find out about volunteering for Plunket, so come along on Saturday, get yourself a bargain and talk to our wonderful volunteers,” she says.

Lesya first became a Plunket volunteer three years ago after the birth of her daughter MacKenzie-Rose, and says it was one of the best decisions she has made.

“I was asked if I wanted to help with donations for a fundraiser and after a while I got a feeling for it. I wanted to help make a difference in the community so I jumped on board and have enjoyed every minute.

“Volunteers are a great asset to Plunket, and I think we are extremely lucky to have acting community service leader Kerry Hamilton who puts so much in and inspires the rest of us,” she says.

• Have your paths and outdoor paving areas cleaned, sprucing them up for spring entertaining.

• Check for loose or leaky gutters and have them cleaned.

• Examine the exterior of the chimney for signs of damage. Have the flu cleaned and inspected by a certified chimney sweep.

• Have a qualified heating and cooling contractor clean and service the outside unit of the air conditioning system.

• Organise for professional window cleaners to pay your home a visit. There’s nothing like looking out of crystal clear windows.

• Check your gas- and battery-powered lawn equipment to make sure it is ready for summer use. Clean equipment and sharp cutting blades will make yardwork easier.

• With warmer weather comes creepy crawlies. Have your home professionally treated for pests before they invade.

Wairau Estuary a focus Ecological research into the state of the Wairau Estuary is of the highest importance because the area is the earliest known site of human habitation in New Zealand and is an archaeological treasure trove which must not be put at risk, says Council Environment chairman Peter Jerram.

The Marlborough District Council commissioned estuarine ecology specialist Cawthron Institute to report on the state of the estuary.

Its survey, by marine ecologist Anna Berthelsen, suggests that, while the estuary is in a fair state overall, there are some indications of ecological stress.

This is the first major examination of the area since the 1980s and the District Council has completed major river engineering and a sewerage discharge upgrade since that work was done.

The report indicates that there is no obvious sign of pollution but seagrass beds have been lost and sedimentation has occurred over time with extremely high mud content in the upper lagoon and big lagoon at the estuary.

The unusual hydrological system of the

estuary is known as a ‘choked’ lagoon where tidal movement is constrained by a single narrow channel into the Wairau River. More work is needed to assess the rate of sedimentation and that is likely to be the focus of the next survey, said councillor Peter Jerram.

“We must pay close attention to this ecologically significant and culturally important ecosystem. It’s a very complex series of waterways which has enormous significance to Marlborough but also to the settlement story of this country. There is a real weight of responsibility on us to ensure it is not further degraded.”

Local residents who knew the area well in earlier decades have contributed to the research and further feedback on environmental changes is being sought now to feed into the next monitoring study which will be published in five years’ time.

Councillor Jerram urged older residents with memories of the Boulder Bank area to come forward now rather than wait until nearer to 2020.

Families are urged to use the Council’s “Tell Your Story” webpage facility to contribute information.

Enviroschools celebrated A decade of Envioschools in Marlborough was celebrated last week.

The province has 31 schools and 6000 students are signed up to the nationwide project while every kindergarten in Marlborough is also part of the initiative.

The scheme, which is supported by district councils teaches children about the various ways they can be environmentally friendly including energy conservation, water care, food distribution, biodiversity and eco-building.

Recycling is also high on the priority list as well as the planting of fruit trees, vegetable gardens and bee keeping for honey.

The ceremony marking 10 years saw the planting of a new area on the Taylor River walkway just up from the Monro Street carpark towards Athletic Park and unveiling a plaque to commemorate this occasion.

Alcohol awareness key message for

breakfast Marlborough Drug ARM stalwart, Roy Ramsey says, people need to know it is not safe to drink alcohol when pregnant or when planning a pregnancy.

He has seen first-hand the day to day issues this can cause for parents of a child with FASD (Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders) and then for the child themselves as they grow to be an adult.

A breakfast for Community Agencies is being held today, the ninth day of the ninth month at the Marlborough Community College to highlight the issue.

Maggie Dewar, Clinical Psychologist CAMHS team (Child and Adolescent mental Health), will speak to raise awareness amongst health and community workers reminding them to continue to get the message out there that “it is not safe to drink while pregnant” and what services are available to families of children with FASD. Drug ARM, Blenheim team, was hoping that the message has got out there that drinking while pregnant in any amount is just not safe.

It is like “Russian Roulette.”

Roy says he still meets youth who have heard that drinking just a bit of red wine is fine as it’s good for you, but this is a myth he says.

“It is a good time to focus on the way we look at alcohol and how it affects our kids.

Drug ARMs message is backed up by the Ministry of Health and the Health Promotion Agency (HPA) who both advise that women should not drink alcohol while pregnant or when planning a pregnancy as there is no known safe level of alcohol consumption at any stage of pregnancy.

Drinking alcohol during pregnancy can result in miscarriage, stillbirth and baby being born with a range of lifelong effects.

FASD is the term used to describe the range of effects that can occur.

It is estimated that between 600 and 3000 New Zealand babies are born every year with FASD.

Rowing medals and Olympic dreams realised

By Jacob Page Blenheim rowers basked in the medal haul at the World Rowing Championships in France.

The women’s lightweight double of Julia Edward and Wairau Rowing Club’s Sophie Mackenzie successfully defended their world title producing an outstanding race pushing into the lead in the third quarter of the race and then storming home to take the win in a time of 6:53.01.

Julia says she had full faith in her Marlborough-based partner throughout the regatta and the race.

“We’re so stoked, we’re double world champions now, we’re very excited - our smiles say it all. I had full confidence in Sophie, going through halfway we were all pretty level but I was very confident in our last 500 metres. We talked about it before the race and Sophie really ramped us up and she got us going. I think it showed in the race, we took length after length so we’re really rapt.”

Marlborough brothers Robbie and Karl Manson had mixed fortunes.

Robbie Manson and Chris Harris remained calm under pressure in the men’s double as they hung onto the race leaders throughout.

The kiwi double had an impressive last 500 metres to push through Germany and win bronze.

Paul Knight claims historic trophy Paul Knight was the major winner from the Marlborough Harrier Club’s Fairhall Road Race on Saturday.

The event was the fourth to last event on the official calendar for 2015 season and took place on the Ben Morven circuit with all grades including walkers starting on handicap battling into a biting head wind.

Knight won the annual Road Race 7 Mile Cup which is presented annually to the first runner home overall in the main race, a distance of 9.2 km.

The cup dates back as far as 1933 and is believed to have been originally presented to the winner of the Renwick to Blenheim road race.

By Alister Cooper Last Saturday was the first race of the old bird season for the Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club.

The 127 birds entered in the race were liberated at Kaikoura at 8.42am in beautiful clear skies, which was a pleasant surprise considering the previous weather forecasts.

Spring Creek flyers took all the major honours with first place going to Donald Morrison, recording a velocity of 1083.63 meters per minute and covering the 108km distance in 1 hour 40 minutes, Second place was Donald’s wife Shirley, 1062.51mpm, and club president Carl Kirkwood’s taking third with 1052.83mpm.
