Water ban frustrating

School shuts down water fountains

By Jacob Page Renwick resident Kayetrina Taylor says it is an embarrassment the Marlborough District Council has forced the towns’ residents into such extreme water conservation measures because they have refused to improve the infrastructure.

The town has been down to just one of its

three pumps for the past two days, as the second pump continues to pump dirty water from recent rainfall.

A total ban on all garden irrigation is in place and the Marlborough District Council has warned residents about the potential need to boil all water if they do not conserve it.

“They should all be embarrassed and held accountable,” she says. “We’re in the 21st century and clean water should be a right for everyone.

“It’s all well and good for the Council to spend (millions) on a new theatre and a library but when basic issues like water are being ignored, it says a lot.

“A new library is fine but it’s fine the way it is for another five years until places like Renwick and Seddon have their water issues resolved.”

“Usually supply of water has not been an issue to Renwick,” Sowman says.

“What it would mean is the establishment of a new well.

“The other issue is water quality... and the treatment of water.

“If we are going to talk a robust

system, we need to talk treatment as well.

“As we speak engineers are looking at two options – the first is pulling the water from Blenheim and running it through our treatment plant... Or we look at the feasibility of another well in Renwick and building a treatment plant to go with it.

“We are looking at $8 million all up and it’s not in the budget for a year or two.

“Under our current rating method, the area of benefit (Renwick) pays 50 per cent of the cost.”

So under our current policy, Renwick people will have to stump-up $4 million and all of sudden they say ‘hang on’.”

Sowman says councillors will debate whether the issue needs to be addressed sooner in the coming months.

Kayetrina says she has a vegetable garden that she now cannot water.

Picton and Havelock also have water restrictions in place while Seddon has received national exposure in the past week as the tiny town continues to fight for clean drinking water for all its residents.

Renwick School has turned off all their drinking fountains from Wednesday.

In a letter sent to parents, principal Simon Heath says it was a chance to eliminate wastage.

He urged all children to bring a full drink bottle to school.

Children could fill up their drink bottles at classroom taps at the teacher’s discretion.

Sowman applauded the move as a “smart school community decision”.

Tahana hits bullseye for big break

By Jacob Page Tahana Cootes was just 11 and starting to get into a little trouble when his Grandad took him down to play some darts.

The 26-year-old is now on the verge of going international after making the 10-man South Island team for the National Darts Tournament in July.

Tahana says his grandfather and father were strong darts players but it was his love for the sport that kept him on the straight and narrow.

“I was a young fella with not a lot to do so playing in the weekend tournaments gave me something to focus on instead of drinking and smoking.

Tahana became a national junior champion at 15.

“That was a big deal but it was the easy part.”

“I’ve been trying to get into the team since I was 19 so it’s a big thrill.

“It’s been a long time since someone from Marlborough made it.

He said the key to darts was counting down from 501 and knowing what you had to throw to win a game.

“You have to be a great counter and know what doubles you’re after.”

Tahana now starts a fundraising effort to get him to the Nationals in Whangamata in July.

Tahana says a strong showing against the North Island team could see him compete in Australia if things go well.

Mayfield Motors drives into new era A family-run Marlborough motor vehicle dealership is changing hands after almost 50 years.

Mayfield Motors, established by Lawrance and Pam Saunders in 1965, has been sold to Wadsco Motorworld owners Wayne Young and Jared Morris, who state the purchase of Mayfield Motors is an exciting move which will enable their group of companies to expand.

The sale takes effect on April 1 2015, when it will become Mayfield Motorworld.

Wadsco Motorworld will remain in Scott Street, and Mayfield Motorworld will remain on its existing site on Hutcheson and Nelson St corners.

The Motorworld group of companies will represent Holden, Suzuki, Subaru, Nissan, Hyundai, Volkwagen and Skoda parts and service between them.

Mayfield Motors owner Sturrock Saunders is the third generation of his family to be involved in the motor vehicle business in Marlborough, but he says the family is very comfortable with the sale knowing that a well-established locally-owned company is taking over.

“Our key emphasis was on local ownership.

Our business is a people business, and nobody deals with locals better than locals.

Fifty peaks in 50 days

By Adam Poulopoulos It’s exhausting just thinking about it, but Mal Law has a very good reason for running 50 off-road marathons in less than two months.

Mal is raising money for the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand by completing the High50 challenge, which involves climbing 50 peaks around the country in 50 days.

Mal has had his own battles with mental illness, and his brother-in-law Max took his own life at the age of 25 after struggling with the illness.

The Acheron Road through Molesworth Station reopened yesterday after sufficient rain fell to reduce the fire danger.

The road will be open until the end of its opening season – Sunday April 12, unless the fire danger increases again.

Half-century for Argosy The Argosy aircraft at Woodbourne celebrated a milestone on Tuesday as it turned 50.

The aircraft had its maiden flight on March 10, 1965, from Baginton in the United Kingdom, and flew until its final flight, from Wellington to Woodbourne, on September 30, 1990.

Trendez to close

By Adam Poulopoulos After nearly two decades in Marlborough, the family-owned Trendez Blenheim Fashion and Beauty Spa closes down later this month.

The Market Street store has its final day on Friday, March 20.

Owner Lisa Duncan, who took over the business from her auntie three and a half years ago, says she wants to spend more time with her children.

“Number three is on the way, and my oldest turns five in June.

“It’s only a small time they stay small. It’ll be nice just to be a mum for a while.

“It’s been a pretty emotional time. To

Lisa says the second part of the decision was financial.

Temporary Road Closure

Changing the way you pay for parking

New pay-and-display machines are being installed at the railway station car park and at Stadium 2000 as part of the changes that were introduced last week to parking around the Blenheim CBD. At the southern end of the railway station car park the parking becomes pay-anddisplay.

To the north of the railway station, timerestricted parking will be available for up to one hour.

In the Kinross Street/Scott Street car park, some spaces will continue to be timerestricted (P150).

Inside the red line, car parking has been converted to Pay and Display parking.

Free parking at the weekend will continue in all Council off-street car parks – including these two areas.

Rain not enough to bring relief Last week brought welcome rain to the gardens of Marlborough. But unfortunately a few days of rain are not enough to deal with the underlying problems with the aquifer that supplies Renwick’s water. Some domestic irrigation restrictions will remain until that aquifer is recharged and it’s not yet possible to say when that will occur. In the meantime, Council is asking people in the townships to follow good water conservation practices.

Council is also keeping a close watch on the saltwater content of Havelock’s water supply.

However, Havelock’s residents have been cutting back on their domestic water use and those savings, coupled with the recent rainfall, have helped to ease the pressure on the

township’s water supply.

Councillor Cynthia Brooks says long-time Renwick residents are very familiar with seasonal water shortages and many have their own arrangements.

In her garden she has water barrels fed from her roof, capable of storing about 5500 litres of rain water.

“We water our fruit trees and shrubs from these barrels and we have others dotted around the property, handy to where the water is needed.”Councillor Brooks says she’s planning to expand the capacity of her own water storage and is also considering installing a rain-fed system to flush household toilets.

“Water is precious, especially in Renwick, and we can all help by making efficient use of what we have.”

Draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2015 to 2021 Statement of Proposal As required by the Waste Minimisation Act (WMA) 2008, the Council has recently reviewed and redrafted its Waste Management and Minimisation Plan (WMMP).

This was prepared following completion of a waste assessment which considered current quantities and composition of waste and diverted materials in the District, existing waste services, predicted future demand for services and practicable options available for meeting forecast demand.

Summary of Information The WMMP considers the types of waste and diverted materials that are generated within the Marlborough region and how we deal with them.

The Council has developed the following vision to promote effective waste management and minimisation: The Marlborough District Council is committed to the vision of reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill through a combination of waste reduction and reuse in conjunction with increasing the rates of material diversion.

From this process the following goals have been established for consideration during the period 2015 to 2021: • Establish a Commercial Industrial Sorting Facility (CIF) by 1 July 2016.

• Investigate options for food waste reduction.

• Investigate options for co-mingled recycling (wheelie bins).

• Investigate options for expanding direct access to recycling services.

• Investigate options for expanding the processing of greenwaste into compost.

Consultation The Council at its meeting on Thursday 19 February 2015 adopted the draft plan and resolved to undertake the special consultative procedure as outlined in s83 of the Local Government Act 2002, with a view to adopting a final plan in May 2015.

The draft Waste Management and Minimisation Plan 2015 to 2021 is now open for submission.

Copies of the Draft Plan and of the Waste Assessment carried out as a precursor to the plan are available to view at the following places during normal office hours.

The Council will then consider all submissions received and make a decision on the preferred options – as well as any amendments to the objectives, targets, and actions of the draft Plan prior to it becoming operative. The final plan will then be submitted for adoption at the Council meeting on Thursday 14 May 2015.

Grove Rd bridge Further to the problem of the narrow Bridge at the Grove, with trucks and cars not having enough room.

We watched as a campervan refused to wait for large truck to cross and ended up blocking all traffic while they manoeuvred around each other.

Greg and Liz purchased the business in November 2013 from previous owners Garry and Yvonne Watson.

They had been one of the business’s biggest customers and had a strong relationship with Garry and Yvonne, so when the opportunity to purchase it came along it was the “right decision”.

“We felt it fitted well with our existing engineering business, and the support we have had from the staff, Garry and Yvonne has been phenomenal,” Greg says.

It was important to Greg and Liz that the business did not undergo a lot of change so it could continue to provide the same exceptional level of service.

“When it comes to service there is no compromise. It must be of a high standard which the guys here do so well,” Liz says.

“So it was important to us that we retained familiar faces and the huge bank of knowledge they have.

“The relationships our staff have with customers is really positive and is what develops business.

“Trading in parts is a specialised game so their knowledge is everything,” Greg says.

With the new ideas offered by staff and feedback from customers, Greg and Liz identified a few areas they felt they could build on - one being the store layout.

The layout, and new branding including a fresh coat of paint and a new logo add a fresh new look to the business.

“We have brought out 50 percent more stock and made it visible to customers on great new display shelving.

“The front counter has moved to the right, allowing the store to be more open. We encourage people to come in, check out the new layout and browse the huge selection we have,” Greg says.

In total there are over 20,000 individual stock items on display, with everything from wheels, pulleys and belts through to bearings, springs and oil.

While Bearings and Accessories is renowned for providing a comprehensive selection of products, two new areas have been introduced including pneumatics and motors and gear boxes.

There’s also a substantial trailer components range and specialised tooling area which have attracted a lot of interest.

“Everything we do is for our customers.

Giving them good old fashioned, down to earth service whilst continuing to meet their needs,” Liz adds.

“No one has more experience than Nigel, it’s mind boggling how much he knows.”

Adding a ‘new dimension’ to the team is the newest member Phil.

Hailing from an agricultural and automotive background, Phil was previously working for a car and truck parts company.

Prior to that he was in the agriculture sector, hay baling, - all good experience he says that adds to his skill set.

“I was looking for a new challenge and what I enjoy most is dealing with customers.”

Memorial complete

By Adam Poulopoulos The Grovetown School war monument has received a coat of paint and a new plaque in time for their upcoming ANZAC service.

The memorial, along with ten crosses to symbolise the ten past Grovetown School war fatalities, will be on show at the service on Wednesday, April 22.

Mayor Alistair Sowman and

Marlborough RSA president John Forrest will also be in attendance.

Work on the memorial has included a new coat of paint for the monument and the surrounding gate, and a new plaque, and it began late last year.

Gravestone vandalised – investigation continues

By Adam Poulopoulos A police investigation is ongoing after a distinctive headstone was defaced at Tuamarina Cemetery.

Danny Pihema’s gravestone was defaced, probably over the weekend, and his widow Helen was notified of the damage by Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors monumental manager Ken Rooney on Monday.

Police have taken samples of the headstone. The star which sat on top of the gravestone was found down a

bank, while the headstone had also been removed from the base.

The star is a symbol of the family’s faith in the Ratana religion.

Helen says she is “absolutely gutted” about the incident.

She thinks the gravestone was deliberately attacked.

“We think it’s been hit by a sledgehammer or something like that. It’s not easy to break. The wind wouldn’t break it.”

She says she has no idea who would

attack it.

The $4000 headstone was purchased after Danny passed away four years ago, but was only paid off last year.

“Now we have to do it all over again,” Helen says.

Day wins photography prize

By Jacob Page Marlborough amateur photographer Marion Day has won the Rural Women New Zealand/ MPI photo competition, with her portfolio of family farming photos.

She was presented with her certificate and book prize by Barbara Kuriger, MP for Taranaki, on behalf of the Minister for Primary Industries, Nathan Guy, at an award ceremony at Parliament, in Wellington, on Tuesday.

The photo competition was run by Rural Women as part of the UN International Year of Family Farming, in partnership with MPI. “Our aim was to encourage people to take photos showing the special place that family farming holds in New Zealand, through visual imagery,” says Rural Women national president, Wendy McGowan.

Over 100 photos were submitted.

camera, inspired by the ever changing moods of Clova Bay and the remote outer Sounds, which she describes as “an amazing creation of inland waterways, mountains and unspoilt wilderness.”

As an amateur photographer she considers herself lucky.

“Because I live amongst such natural beauty and splendour, where mountains anchor into the sea and their peaks pierce the sky, and where the light changes constantly, it’s nearly impossible to take a bad photograph.”

The challenges test the team’s general knowledge, mental arithmetic, observation skills and teamwork, and include the music-themed game ‘My Jam’, a backwards spelling bee called ‘Back Words’ and a quickfire round featuring topics that the teams select themselves.

The winning team each day in ‘The Zone’ will receive a prize which viewers can go in the draw to win too if they get involved with the viewer challenge online. The team who is on top of the leaderboard after ten weeks of ‘The

Zone’ will also win a cash prize for their school or chosen charity.

Presenter Michael Lee says he expects the contest to be competitive.

“This is the first all-male week of The Zone for the year and both teams are extremely confident and competitive.

The stakes are very high because Drummond once captained the Nelson College First XV, and that school is Marlborough Boy’s College’s biggest rivals”.

‘The 4.30 Show’ airs weekdays at 4.30pm on TV2, and ‘The Zone’ is played every weekday.

Framingham’s Friday the 13th concert The annual Framingham Harvest Concert, scheduled for Friday, March 13, will kick off another stunning vintage in Marlborough. North Island-based band Swamp Thing will headline the event along with local groups The Sub Regionals and Big Scout.

Long-time John Butler Trio drummer Michael Barker formed the two-man Blues/Roots juggernaut Swamp Thing with Grant Haua in 2010. Swamp Thing’s energetic live performances are renowned for inspiring concert goers to get up and

dance while showcasing a wealth of musical talent and engaging their audience with some remarkable performances.

Barker’s ability to play drums, keyboards and sing simultaneously offers a unique experience for the audience while Grant Haua’s rich vocal timbre combined with a furious worldly blues guitar style form a notably greater sum of their individual parts. Swamp Thing have written & recorded two albums ‘ Balladeer ‘ and ‘ Primordium.’

It was refreshing to see five Makos involved as the Highlanders pipped the Chiefs 20-17 in last Friday’s Super Rugby clash, even if yellow cards were being thrown around willy-nilly.

First-five replacement Marty Banks kicked the Highlanders to victory with a penalty after the final whistle.

The Chiefs finished the game with 14 players, after winger James Lowe was incorrectly yellowcarded for a tip-tackle with two minutes on the clock, Highlanders lock Joe Wheeler also spent time in the sin bin early in the second half, but was generally impressive in the tight.

KARTING Three local riders lead their respective divisions ahead of the final Marlborough Twilight Series karting meet of the season.

William Exton leads the vortex rok class, Bob Marr the JR Yamaha division and Peter Richardson the rotax heavy class after two meets.

Lowe, who is fast becoming indispensable to the Chiefs.

If rumour is to be believed, all five could be lining up against provincial coach Kieran Keane at some stage this season, as he is sounded out about the Blues coaching job.

When Keane joined Tasman in 2009 there were grave concerns for its financial future.

Last season he led the team to second in the top division, a huge leap.

There are a few ways of looking at this.

If Keane does go, assistant coach Leon MacDonald has stated he would be interested in the top job, and after years working with Keane and the player group, he would be a wise and natural choice

as successor.

Losing Keane would undoubtedly be a blow though.

However, while the Blues have lost all four games, their biggest margin of defeat has been 11 points, and two of their games were in South Africa.

As a Wellingtonian it is against my constitution not to stick the boot in, but with minor changes to playing personnel and All Blacks like the ageless Keven Mealamu, Jerome Kaino and Charles Piutau shouldering the load, their results should turn.

Hopefully they stick with Sir John Kirwan and save themselves, and the Makos, an unnecessary and potentially painful transition phase.

BoomTown Brawlettes seek new members

SOUTH ISLAND ROWING CHAMPS Marlborough Boys’ College rower Jordan Gasson picked up a medal at the weather-affected Meridian South Island Secondary Schools’ Rowing Championships at Lake Ruataniwha.

Jordan got bronze in the boys’ under-17 single sculls final before the meet was affected by high winds.

Once able to field a full team of 14 and have some extras left over, there are now only three members.

A combination of maternity leave, players moving away and other personal commitments have seen numbers fall.

The three remaining members, Crystal Prichard aka Lily Lay’emout, PJ ‘Brut Curvee’ Bibby and Sarah Kissell, or SMAK, are now on a membership drive.

A fresh meat intake is being held at the Stephenson Street rink begins on Sunday, April 26, with a ten-week course teaching the basic skills of the game being held after that.

No roller skating experience is necessary to participate.

SPEED SKATING The second half of the Top of the South Speed Skating Tour will be held at two venues in Blenheim this Sunday.

It begins at the Blenheim Kart track from 9-10am, then moves to the banked track on Stephenson Street from 11am-noon.

About 45 skaters, including several locals and past world champion title holder Nicole Begg will be attending.

Lily Lay’emout, Brut Curvee and SMAK at training on Tuesday night.

Lily Lay’emout says the member shortage is serious.

“We’re really struggling. We need more skaters otherwise we can’t train to our full capacity.

“We’re also at risk of losing our league.”

She says the sport is suitable for everyone.

“You get to be part of an awesome team, we’re a bit like a family, and it’s good fitness.

“We’re all mums and we all have families, so it’s a really good sport for family people too.”

Men or women aged over 17 are all welcome.

Those interested in playing or officiating are also welcome to sit in, participate and meet the team before the intake, in the Brawlettes’ weekly training sessions.

They meet on Tuesdays from 6:30-8:30pm and Sundays from 2-6pm.

Regional regatta coming up Local crews will be gearing up for nationals at the 420 college team sailing regional regatta in Picton later this month.

The regional regatta takes place on March 26, 27 and 28, with the national meet scheduled for halfway through April.

Between 10 and 12 teams will be competing in Picton. Three of those teams will be Marlborough Boys’ College, Marlborough Girls’ College and Queen Charlotte College.

A team of six sailors divided over three boats race another team with three boats. The course has four marks, two up-winds, two reaches and a downwind.

The aim is to get a winning combination, which involves delaying and deferring tactics and strategies to defeat the opposition. This is a complex event requiring a high standard of judging.

All sailing will be done in the harbour in front of the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club.
