By Jacob Page Marlborough’s Wine and Food Festival attracted a large, well behaved crowd for the 2015 edition at Brancott Vineyard.

More than 8000 people flocked from around New Zealand and as far away as Germany to be a part of New Zealand’s longest running annual wine and food festival which started in 1985.

“We couldn’t be happier with how it all went,” she says.

She says the balance between quality wine and food had been a major plus to patrons this year.

“It really helped keep things at a gourmet level and people seem to have really enjoyed it.”

She says a meeting with the Wine Marlborough Board next week will produce constructive feedback on the event as the planning for 2016 got underway.

Marlborough Police praised the organisers and crowd at this year’s incident-free event which saw only one person arrested.

Area Commander Inspector Simon Feltham said the organisers and security staff did an excellent job.

Blenheim St John station manager Rebecca Lee says there was just one ambulance transfer at the event for a non alcohol-related issue.

“Everyone was pretty well behaved we just had a few cuts and blisters to deal with but that was more to do with people’s inadequate footwear.

Duncan Mackenzie says he did the sessions “as a bit of a laugh” but also to allow women to enjoy watching the movie adaptation of the erotic romance novel by British author E. L. James.

“If you can’t have a laugh at yourself then what can you do?”

Mackenzie says while he did not have the exact number of tickets sold to each women only screening, he believes the sessions were “healthy in number”.

He says he would consider doing it again if a movie warranted it.

Water supplies continue to dwindle

Renwick water supplies continue to dwindle and the outlook was not good with little rain likely in the short-term.

The Renwick water supply has been reduced to operating on only two of its three bore pumps as the area’s water supply continues to dwindle.

Marlborough District Council operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney says Renwick’s supply is the lowest he has seen in more than 30 years.

“I am worried by the situation because we haven’t hit the driest time yet, there’s no rain on the horizon and the forecast doesn’t suggest the situation is going to change any time soon.”

Mr Rooney says a pump is shut off when

water levels drop to less than one metre during pumping because of the risk of damage caused by air being drawn into the pump mechanism.

This point has now been reached with one of the township’s three pumps.

Mr Rooney has thanked Renwick people for observing the current hosing restrictions but warns that the outlook, without rain, is not promising.

In ordinary circumstances Renwick uses 65 to 72 litres of water per second at peak times.

“With the aquifers so low, the maximum draw-off we can achieve for the town in the current situation is 27 litres per second.

is still too much strain on the water resources.

We do need people to further ease off their water use at peak time; from 5pm until 8pm,” he said.

In Picton hosing restrictions remain in place with the town continuing to rely solely on the Speeds Road dam for the urban water supply.

Blenheim has no restrictions as the major upgrade to its water supply, funded by Blenheim ratepayers and completed in 2010, delivered not only improvements to the water treatment but also to the storage capacity for the town.

But Mr Rooney says, with the whole region now facing the fallout from drought, no one should be wasting water.

Future shape of libraries up for discussion The future of public libraries in Blenheim and Picton will be discussed at public meetings this week.

Blenheim had their meeting last night while Picton has its turn tonight.

Library projects are the next phase in the District Council’s ‘Growing Marlborough’ planning strategy, a planning document brought together in 2009 after widespread public consultation.

In Blenheim, the project is centred on a High Street-Wynen Street site, incorporating 2 High Street.

While a Library-art gallery is proposed, Council major projects manager Jamie Lyall says there are no detailed decisions yet made and the public meeting was a chance for people to discuss the

potential for this part of town.

“This is not just about a building; it’s a larger urban design project where landscaping and streetscapes may be the first stages completed.

“We will have to work out how the area can best be used to build,

not only a library and art gallery, but also accommodate other purposes such as leisure and tourism.”

Council consultant urban planner, Kobus Mentz has done some preliminary scoping work with a range of community groups who have a stake in the library and in

the CBD. “People have talked about museums and markets and there may be other ideas and we need to hear them. The project was nowhere near the stage of detailed architectural designs yet,” he says.

“However, there were concept plans going back to the Growing Marlborough work, including a sloping, green space connecting High Street with the Taylor River area.”

In Picton, a decision has yet to be made on the future location of the town’s next library.

“The meeting will be an opportunity for the public to discuss the merits of the sites that have been proposed; in High Street and at the waterfront. Other ideas may come up and, again, that’s what we need to hear.”

WATER STORAGE VITAL Water storage remains a key issue for farmers and grapegrowers in Marlborough as drought conditions may become a regular event, the chair of Marlborough District Council’s environment committee says.

The committee was briefed on the state of the region’s water resources on Thursday after a drought was declared in the region, with council scientists describing it as “a drought of medium severity”.

Pope goes coast-to-coast

By Adam Poulopoulos Four years after a calf injury stopped her from competing, Lynda Pope (pictured) has finally completed the Speight’s Coast to Coast.

Lynda completed the two-day event in a time of 17 hours, 21 minutes and eight seconds.

She finished in the two-day individual 50-59 year-old women’s category.

The race is 243 kilometres, split between running, cycling and kayaking.

A keen runner and cyclist, this was Pope’s first major multisport event.

She was due to compete in 2011, but she sustained a serious calf injury.

She says it took a while to recover.

“I was pretty gutted. It took me nearly two years to start running properly again and get in the right mental headspace.

“This year felt right. I gave it everything and trained really hard.”

Pope’s preparation included training in

each discipline three times a week, accompanied at different times by coaches Ron Wastney and James Kuegler.

Day one featured 55km on the bike and 36km of running. In the running leg Pope was affected by tendons in her heel she had strained five weeks before the race, and ran on anti-inflammatories.

The grind continued with a 67km paddle down the Waimakariri River the next day.

“The river was very very low, there was a headwind all day and it was very cold,” she says.

The paddle took an hour longer than she had anticipated.

“I gave it everything I had and by the time I got into Gorge Bridge (the end of the kayaking leg) I was knackered,” she says.

“I got taken out the boat and my legs kept giving way, and I was completely oblivious to what was happening.

“Apparently the St John man came down to me but my crew sent him away.”

Pope completed the final leg, a 70km cycle, finishing with a large group at New Brighton Beach.

She says she may do the Goat Pass run in next year’s edition, but not another full event.

“For me this year’s the year of the family.

“They’ve given me a lot of support. And now it’s time to give back to them.”

Chic is all about taste, and the “Lady of the Jewels” found recently by Spanish archaeologists excavating an Egyptian temple sounds to have been tastefully chic.

After almost 4,000 years her sarcophagus revealed a lady believed to have been in her thirties when she died during the era 2137-1981 BC. She was buried wearing a gold pendant shaped like a shell attached to a necklace threaded with alternating gold beads and violet semiprecious stones, and she had golden bangles of twisted strands on each arm and silver anklets on each foot. While the silver pieces were worn the gold necklace and bracelets, beautifully made, were the epitome of chic.

All the neighbouring sarcophagi had been robbed of their treasures but the Lady’s tomb was preserved by a section of roof which had collapsed before the robbers entered. Unfortunately the mummified remains of the Lady herself were destroyed when the roof caved in but the jewellery remained.

The ‘Girls on Tour’ group came to Blenheim for the Wine and Food Festival.

Stars on tour Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Friday night in Blenheim last week was one of fun and laughter for a group of 24 women who arrived by train for the Wine and Food Festival.

The group is called ‘Girls on Tour’, made up of women from all over the country who come together every year for the festival.

Staying at the Cherylea Motel, group organiser ‘Raqeul Welsh’ as she calls herself, invited the Sun to go along and photograph them in their Disney inspired costumes, before their traditional fashion parade.

“Every year we parade in our costumes around the motel’s pool and ask other guests to judge the best before going into town for dinner in costume,” she laughs.

What is fun about this group is that no one knows each other’s real names. Everyone arrives with a movie star name.

The group was first formed 22 years ago

by Raqeul and her friend Chris (Sam Fox).

“It’s about getting away, not thinking about work or home and having plenty of laughs,” Raqeul says.

Recycle bins Dear Ed. I think the recycling bins should be retained in the smaller communities.

The Renwick one is well used, and it saves going into town, and picking a quiet time to go to the recycling centre when it isn’t busy.

Renwick residents are full of praise having a bin here.

I am recycling more often, and usually there are others at the bin and we comment how great it is.

Friendly Blenheim Lack of foresight Dear Ed, There has been comments lately about how friendly the people are in Blenheim, especially on the TV programe “Seven Sharp”.

My wife and I moved to live here one month ago, after living in Takaka, Golden Bay for about 42 years.

We enjoyed living in Golden Bay area but moved to Blenheim for a number of reasons, the number of friends we have in Blenheim one could count on one hand, so we are really strangers, so to speak.

But what we noticed here is the way everyone speaks to you, one does not have to know you to speak to you, however in Golden Bay and Nelson this was more the case if you knew someone or thought you did no problem.

We find the people of Blenheim very very kind and friendly.

Staff in Rebel shop are all the same, Mike Hoskings of TVNZ is so correct about comments.

Not only does the sun shine here in Blenheim so do the people.

We are so pleased to have come here to see out our time.

Dear Ed, I see where Marlborough Roads draft plan says “There are continuing calls for a bypass of Blenheim.

A 2006 study (Blenheim and Wairau Plains Strategic Study) determined that any bypass could not be justified and would not attract funding from the Transport Agency.

The 2006 costs were in the order of $100m and eight years on may be expected to be in the $200m order.

The study also found that genuine “through traffic” is very low with much of the traffic generated by traffic associated with activity within Blenheim and its vicinity.

Well where’s the foresight? By its own admission costs for a bypass will double in only eight years. Logic - do it now.

The 2006 study is nonsensical.

You only have to follow big trucks from the ferry going through Blenheim and not stopping.

On the way they clog roundabouts.

Come on wake up Marlborough Roads and councillors. Or can you only think three years ahead to the next election?

one on one with the Sun

Career move timely “Knowing you have done something really beneficial for a family that has lost a loved one is what makes the funeral industry so rewarding,” says Blenheim funeral director and embalmer Donna Strachan.

Donna, who joined Geoffrey T Sowman Funeral Directors late last year, sat down with reporter Celeste Lodewyk to talk about returning home to Marlborough and what she loves about her work.

Donna grew up in Marlborough, attending Rapaura School before going on to Marlborough Girls’ College.

In her teenage years she spent a lot of time tramping about the mountain ranges, white water rafting in the Clarence, abseiling in Monkey Bay - all great memories to come back to, but it’s her family that she says was behind her decision to return.

“I have been away for 28 years and felt it was time to come home.

“The funeral industry really opened up my eyes, especially to my parents. Seeing other families miss out on quality time with their parents before they passed made me want to be closer to mine,” she says.

The mother of two teenage children has worked in many interesting fields before becoming a funeral director.

She did a makeup course with TVNZ and was offered a position but says she didn’t like the feel of the job.

She went on to spend 10 years working with a photographer in Auckland doing the makeup for everything from weddings to glamour models.

“I have done so much,” she laughs.

“But out of everything I really love being a funeral director.”

The opportunity to become a funeral director came through a friend when living in the Waikato.

“I honestly never really thought about it, but when it came up I liked the idea of helping people and the community through hard times.

“I felt this came at the right time for me in my life.”

The first time she entered a mortuary she says it was

not scary, but rather a ‘humbling’ experience.

“I went in with an open mind, with compassion and looking at it from a medical point of view.

“Within a week it was completely normal to me and I soon gained an interest in the embalming side of the industry.

“It’s not an industry for everyone, dealing with the deceased as well as their grieving families, but if you can connect with people, have empathy and really care about them it can be hugely rewarding.”

Because Donna’s partner is an embalmer himself, she gained many of her skills from him.

“With both of us in the same industry, it makes such a difference as we are supportive of one another.”

Fairhall old boy starts new role

By Adam Poulopoulos A former Fairhall School student has capped off five years at a school in Christchurch by becoming its head boarder for 2015.

Sam Wilson, who attended Fairhall School between 2002 and 2010, has boarded at Christ’s College since then.

He says he was excited to get started.

“I love boarding and I was pretty pleased to find out.

“I always wanted a leadership role.”

One of Sam’s first duties was to help organise a Valentine’s Day breakfast

with sister school St Margaret’s, but he has a wide variety of duties.

He helps to come up with the school’s boarding program, which involves activities in the community, as well as helping with food in the dining room.

He says his time at Fairhall helped him prepare for his new role.

“Mr Heath (current Renwick School principal Simon Heath) was an old principal there. He was always putting ‘Fairhall Pride’ into our heads.

“I also went to a young leadership course in Wellington while I was there.”

It’s been a good summer Too good really - not enough rain and all the problems that brings.

But for holiday makers and tourist operators it’s been a great few months.

A real highlight of the summer for Tricia and me has been the events we attended and participated in both locally and around the country. Many of them were of a sporting nature with our son Alex running and rowing, or me participating in annual events that I’ve been keen to do again or try for the first time.

Our recent experiences at these events has reinforced to me just how valuable they are to any region and why Council’s move to develop an events strategy for Marlborough and employ an events strategy coordinator is such a good one.

Events are so galvanising - they are on at a particular time and you are either going or you’re not. As one of my old bosses use to say to me ‘don’t give me an option, give me a deadline’. Events attract the sort of people who are proactive and make things happen.

People who are organised, have the means to travel and who like giving things a go. They are the people you want to showcase your province to because chances are they won’t come just once. Many will be back to do the event again or will return just to see what they missed the first time.

With so many natural advantages in Marlborough we are ideally positioned to ride a real wave of event development. We have ample opportunity to foster the expansion of both existing events and nurture the ideas of those capable of starting something new.

While I don’t believe in ‘picking winners’ and handing over ratepayer money to event organisers by way of grants, the Council must and can still continue to play a strong facilitation role in maximising event opportunities in Marlborough.

I look forward to seeing the progress with events in our slice of paradise.

Fun fiesta Two days remain before the opening of the hunting and fishing window for the Grovetown School Hunting and Fishing Game Fiesta.

Weigh-in for the fiesta will be on Sunday between 10am and noon, while hunting and fishing for all animals starts at 6am on Friday, February 27, and finishes at noon on the Sunday.

Cash prizes of $150 will be given to those with the heaviest pig, deer and fish, while $50 will be given for the heaviest goat.

Under-16 prizes will also be given, and average weight prizes will be given in all sections.

All pigs, deer, goats and fish must be gutted before weighing, and all eels must be alive for the live weigh-in.

Other activities include helicopter rides, face painting, a colouring competition and obstacle courses.

Kennard pilots Paddon to fifth in WRC

By Jacob Page Blenheim’s John Kennard has helped pilot New Zealand rally ace Hayden Paddon to his best ever finish at the World Rally Championship event with a fifth placing at Rally Sweden.

The Kiwi duo driving for Hyundai, held sixth throughout most of their season opening rally before a final day retirement saw them push up the final standings.

Paddon says it’s the perfect start to the new year.

“To get in the top five is much more than we expected going into this rally. It’s been a good rally for us overall and very important to gain the experience in these demanding winter conditions.

“This year conditions are probably the best they’ve been here for many years.

“There was a lot of snow before the rally, so there are really good snow banks and I guess that’s been encouraging drivers to drive fast, to really lean on the snow banks.

“At the same time that’s a catch 22, that’s what’s been catching some drivers out, including ourselves in some circumstances.”

Regatta attracting outside interest Preparations for the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club are well under way, as they look forward to the InterIslander Optimist Challenge and Port Marlborough Starling Champs this weekend.

Racing begins on Friday morning and concludes on Sunday afternoon.

Racing will be held at Picton Harbour, and on-shore activities will be based at Shelley Beach.

Racing will be held in the starling, optimist green and open fleet categories.

Green fleet racing can be watched from the shore, while the open and starling fleets are sailing further out.

The Queen Charlotte Yacht Club contingent will be headed

by New Zealand Youth Olympian Alastair Gifford, who will be racing in the starling category.

Oliver Cowley will be favoured in the open fleet category, and he is currently top in the country after two ranking regattas, while Suede Cowley is QCYC’s best hope in the optimist green division.

QCYC has 14 sailors across the three categories, as well as two other rainbow fleets joining for experience.

About 70 percent of the sailors will be from the North Island,

The InterIslander event is one of the New Zealand International Optimist Dinghy Association’s optimist ranking regattas, which count towards the national rankings, but it is also a friendly struggle between the North and South Island.
