He says the priority is still around the houses in Lamberts Road and the western flank of the fire, nearest to the Onamalutu Valley.

“There’s some difficult terrain yet to be dealt with out on the western boundary and there are some steep ridges where the access isn’t easy.”

Farm outbuildings, water tanks, fencing and

kilometres of piping for stock water had been lost in the fire, he said.

Monday night’s southerly delivered only eight millimetres of rain, enough to be helpful but not to put any hot areas out.

Over the next 48 hours the Fire Authority will transition responsibility back to the forest owners, Nelson Forests Limited.

Forestry crews are now on site to familiarise themselves with the fire site. The infra-red camera will be flown over the area this morning to identify any hot areas still burning.

“At this stage we are confident we have the fire at a stage the forest owners will be able to manage and continue the good work of the rural fire crews have achieved over the last week,” John says.

Entire paddocks were stained black from the forestry hillside right down to the edge of the road.

At one point you could see where the fire had jumped the road and begun to burn an area in front of a vineyard.

Where the road winds just before the turn-off to Onamalutu, the hillside and banks were burned and charred trees stuck out from the undergrowth.

On Saturday that portion of the road was closed to traffic at hourly intervals by the fire crews to allow tree felling.

Twenty firefighters from Nelson had joined the team on Monday while fire crews from Canterbury and the West Coast have now returned home.

The organiser of the Sweet-Az Sun Festival on Waitangi Day says he is looking forward to bringing the event back next year.

About 2000 people turned out for the event at Lansdowne Park, celebrating both Waitangi Day and Bob Marley’s birthday.

Held in warm conditions, the event featured Tiki Taane as the headline musical act, supported by others like Optimus Gryme, One Vibe and local reggae band Onestep.

Organiser Dave White says he is happy with how the event went.

“Artistically and as far as the crowd was concerned, it was very good.

“The venue was perfect. It had a beautiful grassy area and it was awesome to have the shade of the grandstand.

“I think it’ll grow next year now people know what it’s like.”

He says the only negative feedback was people did not like being caged in the bar area, and he would be applying for an unsupervised licence for next year’s event.

“I think having lots of little kids around helps keep the crowd in check a little bit.”

The organising committee has already booked the same Tian Woodley, 15, Te Ao Marama Nepia, 9, Mareikura Nepia, 6, Tineka Houra, 15 venue on Waitangi Day for the same festival next year. and Tiarna Nukunuku, 11.

“I was like ‘oh my God, oh my God,’ then I screamed.”

She says an artistic background helped her with her design, which had to be suitable for primary school children of both genders across all ages.

The health warning initially issued on 23 December will remain in place for Tory Channel after levels of the toxic Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning continued at dangerous levels.

Nelson Marlborough medical officer of health Dr Ed Kiddle says ongoing monitoring has shown the toxin is still present.

“Symptoms of Paralytic Shellfish Poisoning are numbness and tingling around the mouth, face or extremities, difficulty swallowing or breathing, dizziness and double vision.

“In severe cases, paralysis and respiratory failure can occur.”

“I love doing art. I love design and working together with a team to make designs.”

Lilah’s mother Heather, a teacher at Bohally, got a phone call at school telling her Lilah had won.

The pair had to keep it quiet until Warehouse Stationery made it public.

She says her daughter took about a month to fine-tune the design.

“It’s amazing for someone her age to plan something like that.

“I was really proud…I’ve never seen a kid her age work so calmly on something for so long.”

Artist Dick Frizzell judged the competition, and says he was impressed by Lilah’s design.

“It’s original, clearly-stated and remarkably well-envisaged.

“It all came together and really stood out from other entries.”

An 18-year-old Blenheim man has been charged in relation to a burglary at a Grovetown piggery on January 31, along with a further six burglaries at commercial premises around Blenheim.

The man also faces four charges of unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle and one charge of shoplifting.

He appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Friday morning.

BEACH DAY The annual More FM Beach Day, and its sandcastle competition, are back for another year.

The event will be held on Sunday, February 22 at Whites Bay. The sandcastle competition will run from 10:30am-12:45pm.

Prizes up for grabs include a family weekend in Hanmer Springs.

The beach dig gets under way at 1pm.

Lilah’s design makes school book covers

By Adam Poulopuolos Primary school students from around the country will this year be using books emblazoned with the design of an 11-year-old Bohally Intermediate School pupil.

Lilah Bowers was one of three winners in the national Art for Book competition, run by Warehouse Stationery.

The competition invited primary, intermediate and secondary-school students to design a cover for 1B5-sized exercise books.

The books with the designs have been donated to low-decile schools around the country.

Lilah completed her design last year while at Springlands School, so won the primary school-level of the competition.

Her design, inspired by a mural being painted at the school at the time, features students painting school-related designs onto a wall.

She says she was excited to hear her design had won.

Coin released A multi-coloured legal tender coin will be released next month to mark the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landings.

The 50-cent pieces features hammerhead shark and silver fern patterns, as well as New Zealand and Australian soldiers.

One million of the coins will be released on March 23.

The number represents the size of New Zealand’s population at the start of World War One.

Wedding bells for courageous couple

By Celeste Lodewyk Last month the Sun profiled couple Bex Smith and Richard Vuletich who shared their fight against Richard’s cancer diagnosis 18 months ago.

Richard was found to have a cluster of cancerous lymph nodes surrounding his liver and pushing up against his lower back, as well as in both of his lungs.

Bex is the daughter of Blenheim Police community constable Russ Smith who set up a Givealittle fundraising page (http://givealittle.co.nz/cause/richysfight/donations ) to help the couple with the ongoing cost of treatment and day-to-day expenses.

The page, Russ says, has been hugely supported with over $47,600 already donated.

“This money has given them an opportunity to consider other forms of therapy, and already they have looked seriously at one.

“This was what the page was set up for, to give them options so I am pleased for them,” he says.

While the success of the Givealittle page has the family smiling, there is one more piece of exciting news the couple has to share.

Bex and Richard are married.

After previously expressing their desire to get married, the happy couple exchanged vows on January 25 in what their family described as ‘a really magnificent day’.

“The wedding, although arranged at short notice, was truly beautiful,” Russ says.

“They were married at the end of a peninsula overlooking Whangarei Harbour on the front lawn of a beautiful old villa.

“I walked Bex down a petal lined aisle to Ritchie which was a great moment, we were all so proud.”

Urgent notice for Renwick water restrictions Monday night’s eight millimetres of rain was not enough to have any effect on rivers and aquifers and because Renwick’s well levels are further dropped, stronger water restrictions have been imposed.

Because the water use in Renwick continues to exceed network capacity as of yesterday (February 10) and until further notice, the use of sprinklers for watering is prohibited.

Residents may use hand held hoses only.

All residents are urged to comply with these restrictions to help reduce water usage and to avoid low pressure and loss of supply in some locations.

Water complaint Last week the Sun received an anonymous complaint from a Renwick resident, who was upset after seeing water tankers filling up from a water hydrant near the intersection of Kowhai Drive and Anglesea Street.

With Renwick’s water restrictions in mind, he was concerned at the amount of water being taken by the tankers and the impact it would have on the town’s supply.

The Sun contacted the Marlborough District Council, and operations and maintenance engineer Stephen Rooney provided this statement.

“When water restrictions were put in place for both Renwick and Picton all water tanker

operators holding permits to take water from hydrants were advised they could not take water from either of these locations other than for firefighting purposes.

“Over the last few days (last week) HEB and other contractors have been filling tankers to assist with fighting the North Bank (Kaituna) fire.

“In the interests of public safety we believe this is permissible.

“Council staff have been assessing the volumes being taken through the use of the real time scada monitoring.”

Student vet receives grant

Pelorus Area Health Trust recently awarded Kyle Jones as a recipient for their annual grants.

Kyle received a $500 grant which he intends to use for purchasing course related items such as text books, and surgical equipment for his third year in Bachelor of Veterinary Science.

He says he hopes to be a companion animal veterinarian and eventually will return to university to study zoo medicine and wildlife health.

Kyle is a committee member of the Massey Student, Wildlife Club and this year the Clubs co-president will be heading to South Africa for a two week internship in July.

This is an important addition to his CV, as he hopes to one day become a zoo vet.

Kyle has also completed various practical work experience around the country as a zoo keeper at Natureland Zoo in Nelson, at a dairy farm in Canvastown, and at a small animal vet clinic in Christchurch.

Pelorus Area Health Trust have been providing health education grants for the past three years.

Pelorus residents to further their education that fall within the criteria of fostering health and well-being within the Pelorus area.

Their recently renovated charity shop in Havelock, the Treasure Chest, helps fund the health education grants the Trust provides.

SPCA resettled after emergency evacuation

By Celeste Lodewyk The threat of the Onamalutu fire last week sparked an emergency evacuation of Marlborough SPCA’s animals early on Thursday morning.

Marlborough SPCA centre manager Kaycee Polkinghorne told the Sun due to the large number of animals at the centre and need for assistance in the fire affected area, the decision to evacuate was made.

“Because the area around us is extremely dry at present I feel the decision to evacuate early was the right thing do and was completed in a matter of hours.

“Both the evacuation and rescue ran incredibly smoothly considering the urgency of the situation.”

Once the animals were evacuated, the centre was used for animals brought in from the fire-affected areas.

Marlborough SPCA was able to assist with animals in immediate danger, including the floating of horses out of the area, the release of two horses across the river and onto the flats, the removal of several sheep, a goat, and a couple of terrified dogs.

Supporting the centre’s evacu-

ation was an ‘amazing team’ of volunteers, members of the public, animal control, police, air force and fire personnel.

Kaycee says this evacution showed how much community support there was for the centre, and that a report will be completed regarding the evacuation procedure highlighting areas of success and areas requiring improvements.

Most of the animals have since been moved back to the centre, though all caging is ready if relocation is required again.

Marlborough Boys’ College celebrates its fifth year of academic improvement.

Academic achievement rising Last year saw the continuation of five years of academic improvement for Marlborough Boys’ College.

In 2014 82 percent of MBC’s NCEA Level 1 students passed, up from 77 percent in 2013 and from 60 percent in 2009.

Rises were also recorded for NCEA Level 2 and 3 students at the college.

As well as more of their students passing, MBC recorded more merit and

excellence-level endorsements across all levels.

At Level 1, 49 percent of students achieved merit or excellence, with 26 percent at Level 2 and 32 percent at Level 3.

MBC board of trustees’ chairperson Tony de Reeper says all the students, staff, board and parents can be very proud of the improved results.

“It is a positive reward for all the concerted effort that

has gone on in the school to raise student achievement.

“The improved merit and excellence grades show the school is meeting the needs of its more academic students.

“However, the results, especially at year 12 and 13, also reflect the increased opportunities being provided for students with vocational aspirations in courses like Gateway and trades academies.”

Re: New Signage Concrete the way forward Monstrosity Dear Ed, Reading the article in your paper (New signage the way forward) A suggestion would be to get Frank Porter from Marlborough Roads to start thinking outside the square instead of following the norm.

My suggestion would be to add to the advanced stop warning signs a couple of low judder bars to the lane approaching the intersection.

It is my belief that because there are so many signs around the country motorists don’t notice them.

By giving motorists a wake-up shake over judder bars before they get to the intersections will not only slow them down but also remind them that caution is required and to look for the signage.

I would be happy to discuss idea further with Marlborough Roads & Roading NZ. Dave Fowler

Dear Ed, You cannot help but notice the concrete edifice being erected in the form of the new theatre.

It completely blocks the vista through to Picton skyline that was so good on turning into Hutcheson Street.

Almost as equally coming the other way south along Hutcheson Street, the same dominating impact hits the eye.

It will be a monument to the short-sighted planning of council.

There were far better sites for the concrete monstrosity.

The parking building complements it also as as a monument to the extravagance at a time when belt tightening was needed.

Never mind, ratepayers will foot the bill.

Re: Charlotte Waara Dear Ed, Your front page story on Friday is the second example in the last two weeks.

Both families are Maoris.

In recent times Maori tribes in Marlborough have received more than 120 million dollars in handouts from the taxpayers, and have also been given all the housing at Woodbourne that was previously Air Force housing.

A drive around the base shows many houses there are unoccupied.

With all these handouts, why are tribes not looking after their own people?

Is this huge amount of money feathering the nests of a greedy few while their needy are left to bludge even more from us hard working taxpayers?

Dear Ed, I wish to bring to councils attention, the sad state of the roof of the shelter on top of the ridge at Harling Park.

I have a sample (pictured) which was picked up some distance away and drew my attention to the roof.

The rate of deterioration suggests to me that either poor workmanship or more likely poor advice as to materials is to blame, as this is a relatively new structure.

Council needs to rein in it’s support for ideas that seem desirable at the time and think more carefully of the likely consequences to rate payers in the future.

Any support from rates for projects aimed at favouring the well off and possibly excluding the lower socio economic group is merely robbing the poor to subsidise the rich.

Your council and those before you have tended down this path too often.

You don’t have to look too far for examples.

one on one with the Sun

The Central Districts contingent at the 2007 match between Canada and New Zealand - Ross Taylor, Geoff Barnett, sports psychologist Gary Hermansson, Jacob Oram and Michael Mason.

World Cup experience Now working in Marlborough, Geoff Barnett spent just over four years playing international cricket for Canada.

Adam Poulopoulos spoke to him about playing in the 2007 World Cup in the West Indies, and his predictions for this year’s edition, which begins in Christchurch on Saturday.

For a New Zealand-born cricketer, Geoff Barnett took an unconventional route to cricket’s showpiece event.

A provincial cricketer for Central Districts, he got the chance to play for Canada at the event through his mother, who was born there.

He says overall, it was a great experience.

“For the first time in my experience we had all the teams in one place.

“You got a range of guys. (Indian batting legends) Sachin Tendulkar and Rahul Dravid were across from me in the hotel before the opening ceremony.

“They were two of the nicest guys. If you were in the lift they’d ask you more questions about your day than the other way around.”

On the field, Barnett had the opportunity to open for Canada against New Zealand in their final pool match in St Lucia, and scored 40 as New Zealand won by 114 runs.

Canada had played England a few days earlier, but Barnett says their opening match against fellow minnows Kenya was their most memorable atmosphere of the tournament.

“We gave away 5000 tickets to school kids for the game, and they supported us because of that.

“The locals were priced out for a lot of games at the tournament. They were paying about US$100 for tickets.”

The length of the tournament was also heavily criticised. The Canadian team were there for five weeks and played only three World Cup matches, as well as some warm-up games.

“It was like a vacation in some sense,” Barnett says.

“You’d worked so hard to get fit and it was hard maintaining it.”

Off the field, Barnett remembers the opening ceremony, held in Jamaica, which featured musical acts like Ziggy Marley, Sean Paul and Rihanna.

“We didn’t actually see much of it because we were right at the back of the stadium,” he says.

“They played privately for the players at the hotel afterwards.”

He says the tournament also had its negative moments.

While the Canadians were staying in Trinidad for warm-up games their hotel was attacked with tear gas. Nine hotel guests were injured.

Later in the tournament Pakistan coach Bob Woolmer, who worked with several of Barnett’s teammates earlier in their careers, passed away. The cause was of-

ficially listed as natural causes.

After the World Cup, Barnett continued to play for Canada when his Central Districts commitments allowed.

He gave up playing for Central Districts in 2008 and Canada in 2010.

“I was enjoying the travel but the cricket became a chore. I went through a period when I wasn’t enjoying it” he says.

“I played back-to-back seasons for about eight years.”

With the World Cup around the corner Barnett says he has plans to see the New Zealand v England game in Wellington on February 20.

He says the Black Caps will be competitive at the event.

“For the first time ever they have a bit of balance, but they might be an opener short.

“A player like Ryder is the missing link at the top, but I guess everything’s been tried to try and get him back in.”

He says South Africa and Australia are favourites for the tournament, and Pakistan is a dark horse.

Born in Nelson, Barnett now works locally for eco-tech company Expleco, who design and manufacture glass bottle crushers, and plays Twenty20 cricket for the Wairau Valley Cavaliers in Blenheim’s Friday night competition.

A record smashing fundraiser A record-breaking weekend of giving in Blenheim has kicked off Orphans Aid International’s annual street appeal as volunteers around the country gear up to shake their buckets on streets nationwide between February and May. Over 60 Blenheim volunteers, coordinated by dedicated Orphans Aid International supporters Ruby and Sharon Hunt, collected almost $4,000 over two days in January, smashing all previous street appeal records says CEO Sue Van Schreven.

Paraguayan harpist in Blenheim Eduard Klassen is a Paraguayan folk harpist, now living in Canada, who has presented over 4000 music concerts in 29 countries.

Eduard will be performing at St. Ninians Church on Tuesday, February 17, beginning at 7:30pm.

A typical concert presentation by Eduard includes a variety of Christian harp music from South America, North America and Europe, interspersed with personal testimony and stories of God’s work in his life, from boyhood in the wilderness of Paraguay to the present.

Eduard’s natural sense of humour helps him to develop an excellent rapport with audiences wherever he goes.

The Paraguayan harp is a rare instrument to see being played in Blenheim.

The St. Ninians Church is privileged to be invited to host the Blenheim leg of his New Zealand tour.

Nelson Marlborough District Health Board has released two videos showing what the operating theatres look like and the process for patients who have elective (planned) surgery.

The videos were filmed in half a day in between busy theatre schedules at both Nelson and Wairau Hospitals.

The initiative was introduced by Communications Manager, Katherine Rock who enlisted her son Jerry Rock-Archer who had recently completed the University of Otago Communicating Science Masters programme in documentary film making.

Mr Rock-Archer filmed the journey using his camera as the eyes of a patient, using a wheelchair as a camera dolly to smoothly

transition between areas.

Chief Executive Chris Fleming says the videos give patients an idea of what to expect, “as we know that the fear of the unknown is sometimes a barrier to attending the theatre appointments”.

“This idea came from discussions around holding open days for the public to walk through theatres. We are very pleased with the videos and now patients who have planned surgery can go onto the site at any time and get a clear idea of what the facilities look like,” he says.

New hospital patient IT system for South Island Health Minister Jonathan Coleman says a new hospital patient information system will be rolled out across South Island District Health Boards to streamline services.

The Nelson Marlborough District Health Board will adopt the system in early 2016, while hospital patients in Canterbury will be the first to benefit from the new IT system, with it being phased in towards the end of the year.

Coleman says the South Island Patient Information Care System will be phased in over the next two to five years, replacing

seven existing patient administration systems.

“The IT system will make the electronic transfer of patient information safer and more efficient.

“The programme will also manage patient appointments, admissions, discharges, and transfers across all DHBs. “Hospital staff will be able to reduce duplication, share resources, and spend less time on administration.”

The system will also make it easier for DHBs to find relevant information from other DHBs.

Marygold Miller passes away Marygold Miller passed away on February 2, aged 94.

Marygold was alive to witness the pedestrian crossing, which she campaigned to see for 15 years, become a reality late last year outside the Ashwood Park Retirement Village where she lived.

It was one of several causes she championed.

Marygold has donated her body to science. A celebration of her life will be held in Blenheim at a date to be advised.

Jessie Windleburn has passed away in her 104th year.

Described as a local ‘pioneer’ Jessie and husband Ernest were well known for their house and corner store on the corner of Battys and New Renwick Roads called the New Era Store. It is now called The Burleigh.

She passed away on January 29.

Magician with a message One of New Zealand’s top magicians is using a blend of magic and humour to deliver important social messages to kiwi kids.

Greg Britt, aka Elgregoe, performed at both Riverlands School and Redwoodtown School on Monday, spreading an antibullying message to students.

Supporting the 2015 school curriculum, the hour-long ‘You’ve got the Power’ school show draws attention to what bullying can look like and teaches kids about how to treat others.

Through the charisma of magic Elgregoe has been delivering his show for more than 17 years. He and his show assistant, wife Sue, use tricks, puppets, ventriloquism, music, songs and a variety of props to portray his anti-bullying messages.

The Elgregoe dream began 15 years ago

when a school principal said “if you are a real magician then let’s see if you can make bullying disappear.”

This challenge led Elgregoe to look at the issues of bullying and create a unique show for schools that addressed these issues with the help of magic.

Elgregoe says this year he wants the students to have fun and be fully engaged in the show while learning important life skills that do make a difference.

“I am one lucky guy. I love performing my tricks, doing ventriloquism, working with live parrots and travelling, and I get to do all this for a job while also delivering a valuable message for all students.”

Yealands Yak fast approaching Over 350 women have registered for this month’s Yealands Yak. The six-hour all-women team trail event takes place on Saturday, February 21 at Yealands Estate.

Teams of two to six women walk, jog or run in pairs around 10 vineyard trails two to eight kilometres long. The team that collectively covers the most distance in six hours is the winner.

The trails comprise eight different laps in total, marked by different coloured arrows, and need to be run in the order specified, with staffed checkpoints along the routes.

Search uncovers cannabis operation Marlborough Police executed a search warrant at the Renwick home of a suspected cannabis grower last week.

Officers discovered 94 cannabis plants, 48 of which were growing indoors and 46 around the garden.

Police also seized a small quantity of cannabis oil,

301 grams of dried cannabis and more than half a kilogram of cannabis head.

A 44-year-old man appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday charged with cultivating cannabis, possession of cannabis for supply and possession of a class B drug.

Surf boat crew performs

By Adam Poulopoulos The Rarangi Surf Life Saving Club’s under-23 surf boat crew competed bravely at the trans-Tasman test series at Waihi over the weekend.

The crew finished behind the Australian and New Zealand open crews in each of their races, but made them a lot closer than many were anticipating.

They finished between two and three boat lengths behind in the three races, two of which were long-course and one short-course.

The races were held in flat conditions, with swells not exceeding half a metre.

The crew’s sweep, Neil Watts, says he was happy with the performance.

“We held our own on the way out but once we got around the turn the bigger, stronger crews pulled away a little bit.

“Everyone commented on how well we rode.

We were facing the two best crews in the world at the moment.”

Later in the weekend the crew raced the last two of five races in the national under-23 meet held at the same venue, and still finished third of seven teams.

back week of training before getting back into it ahead of the New Zealand Surf Life Saving Championships in Gisborne next month.

The new triathlon/duathlon series is organised by Mark Grammer from Marlborough Sport Development, with the support of the Awatere Community Trust.

Grammer says the day could not have gone better.

“The weather was perfect, everyone enjoyed the new course and we had none of the traffic issues which can complicate these sorts of events.

“The Seddon Domain provides a great event environment, and the roads are as safe as we can get in Marlborough for kids and adults.”

There are two events left in the series on February 22 and March 8.

Biddy Kates Celtic will be one of the teams to contest the Marlborough T20 final, having opened up a 10-point lead at the top of the standings with one round to play.

The final round-robin games are tonight. Blenheim Valley will have to beat Celtic to stand any chance of joining them in Friday’s final, while Cornerstone Wairau Cavaliers play Grove Tavern Wairau.

Guthrie Bowron Renwick have a bye tonight, and are out of the reckoning for the final.

Renwick had more luck in the second-grade 40-over competition, beating Celtic by 80 runs to take the title.

KARTING Daniel Bugler is the top driver in the rotax light division after Cresswell Electrical Raceway’s first twilight meet of the year over the weekend.

Bugler finished in the top two in each of his four heats, putting him comfortably ahead of the pack.

Peter Richardson is the top rotax heavy driver, William Exton leads the JR Roc/Yamaha pack and Jarod Fisher is top of the Junior Rotax standings.

Basketballers in Australia Marlburians Oriana Houra, Rachel Vis and Annaliese Raemaki, all 16, headed to New South Wales for the under-17 Country Development Tournament at Port Macquarie recently.

The trio were representing the South Island, with the team finishing third of six in the tournament.

The team playing seven games in five days against a North Island team and New South Wales state teams.

Before the tournament the team also participated in a sports science and nutrition seminar.

To raise money for the trip Oriana, Rachel and Annaliese washed windows and cars, and had a fundraising dinner and raffle.

First Awatere Triathlon a success Sam Durrant showed on Sunday he is ready for his elite triathlon showdown in Takapuna next week.

Competing in the new Awatere Triathlon Series in Seddon, Durrant completed the 300 metre swim, 10 kilometre cycle and 2.3km run in a shade over 31 minutes.

The distance is similar to what he will be racing in the Tri NZ elite race in a weeks’ time, where he’ll up against the likes of Olympian Ryan Sissons.

The long triathlon, which comprised a 750m swim, 20km cycle and 4.5km run, was won by Martyn Crossley.

It attracted first time competitor David Greer, whose sons Fergus, 11 and James, 14, are already accomplished triathletes.

“It’s about time I gave it a go, but there’s no way I can keep up with them anymore,” Greer says.

Martin finished more than half an hour ahead of her nearest rival, Amy Brazier, in the women’s race.
