Teacher finds her calling Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim School new entrant teacher Cheryl Alderlieste comes from a family of teachers and although she initially thought it was a career she wouldn’t enjoy, she now finds herself in the classroom surrounded by young, curious minds.

And she loves it!

“I live for teaching.”

In her first year of teaching, Cheryl said she is firm with high expectations.

“It’s my goal for my students to leave my class as self motivating individuals, all the while giving them the care and attention they need to develop.

“I have found my calling and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.”

Teachers’ Day, October 29 in New Zealand honours teachers and their contributions towards the country’s education.

For Cheryl it was just another day doing what she enjoyed most - teaching her 21 students.

“I always imagined I would

do specialist teaching work, but after doing teacher aide work for a number of years and being told by other teachers I should pursue it full time I decided to go for it.

“I studied part time over five years and with the support of

my family I achieved my goal.

“Now it’s like I live here. This is home away from home, it’s such a lovely school,” she said.

Asked what makes each day memorable, Cheryl replied; “Walking into the classroom and receiving hugs galore.”

Picton streets set for live performance Picton’s streets will become the setting for Wellington theatre collective, Binge Culture’s, live performance of ‘Whales’ on Sunday, November 16.

The show, which will involve local people, is part of the programme of events to launch the National Whale Centre’s Display and Development Hub in Picton.

“This street performance will be a lot of fun for both adults and children and will be typical of the sort of interactive events people can expect from our new National Whale Centre,” NWC Trust chair, Nick Gerritsen said.

Picton residents are invited to bring a bucket and gather

on the waterfront to join in the performance.

Two separate pods of 15 ‘whales’ will emerge from different locations in central Picton.

As they ‘swim’ across the land,

through the streets and between passers-by, they’ll sing their whale song.

Then, a whale-response team will organise teams of passersby to help save the whales who have beached themselves in the hot sun.

The Trust aims to build an iconic, interactive space on Picton’s waterfront for visitors to learn more about cetaceans and the local area’s whaling history through temporary exhibitions and events.

The NWC’s Display and Development Hub is phase one of its development as a national institution based in Picton.

Halloween is fun but be responsible Continued from page 1.

While some see Halloween as a fun event, others might feel frightened or intimidated by the costumes or simply do not want to take part.

Blenheim community constable Russ Smith shared some advice for a safe Halloween night.

“Police don’t usually have a lot of issues around Halloween other than the odd household complaint with the behaviour of someone on their property.

“My suggestion is that if you don’t want to be part of Halloween, put a polite note at your entrance.

“For the parents of children out trick or treating on their own, teach them to never enter a stranger’s home and to stay in well lit, familiar areas.

“Plan their route, carry a cellphone and discuss a designated place to meet if anyone gets lost.

“Parents, check any treats and discard if wrappers are loose or look like they have been tampered with,” he said.

Russ reminded children and young people to use good manners and to behave well whether a resident offers treats or not.

This will ensure that complaints to police are kept to a minimum.

For families looking for an organised Halloween event, there will be a Haunted Treasure Hunt at the Fudge Factory at The Vines Village from 3pm to 5pm.

There will be a kids dress up competition, treasure hunt and spot prizes.

Earthquake in Seddon

A magnitude 3.7 earthquake struck five kilometres north-east of Seddon at 11:05am yesterday.

The jolt was followed by a magnitude 2.3 quake at the same spot about five minutes later.

There were no reports of injury or damage.

Villa ‘MO’ria looks to raise $5000

By Adam Poulopoulos Many Villa Maria Estate staff around the country will be devoid of sunburn on the top lip next month, as they grow moustaches for a good cause.

A combined 54 staff from the Marlborough, Hawke’s Bay and Auckland regions have signed up for Movember, when men grow moustaches during November to raise awareness for men’s health.

So far $920 has been raised, leaving the team third in New Zealand at the moment.

A goal of $5000 has been set, and some employees have donated wine from their allowances to be put into a prize draw.

A page, titled ‘Villa MOria,’ has been set up on the Movember website for those looking to donate.

Local cellar master and team organiser Nick Best said the event was a good team-building exercise, as the three regions vied for the highest donations, but the cause was what was most important.

“We’re trying to raise awareness and money

For viticulturist Andrew Benger, the shave may come as quite a shock.

He has been growing his facial hair for the last 23 years.

“I’m very attached to it. It’s a permanent feature,” he said.

“I have to grow it back for my son’s wedding in mid-December, otherwise the family won’t recognise me.”

Mr Benger once landed an extras part in the Russell Crowe movie ‘Hammers over the Anvil’ with the facial hair, but had to shave it off under unforeseen circumstances.

He returned to set clean-shaven and was removed from the role, and sent to work in the backstage crew.

He said the change affected his home life too.

“Back then the kids were just babies. They wouldn’t go near me for a week.”

Andrew and the other local participants will be shaved later today at the winery, while a fundraising sausage sizzle will be held at Mitre 10 Mega during November.

There will be a book sale held at the Blenheim library today from 10am to 3pm.

All money raised from the book sales will go back to the library fund.

EMPLOYEE RISE The Marlborough region saw an employee rise of six percent in the year ending February 2014, according to recent figures.

Statistics New Zealand released the data, which stated the agriculture, forestry and fishing industries contributed most to the rise.

Marlborough was one of 14 regions nationwide to experience an employee rise. Only Gisborne and the West Coast experienced a decrease.

There was an all-time high of 487,900 businesses in New Zealand in February.

By Adam Poulopoulos The new owners of French Essence Café say all the elements of a successful venture are already in place, and they will only be making minor changes.

Chris Nally and Debbie Harper took over the Redwoodtown café earlier this month, and had their first day on Saturday, October 4.

They replaced Dave and Sarah Anderson, who also own the Wither Hills winery and the Essence Events catering company.

Chris and Debbie said they are making only minor tweaks to the menu and décor.

“It’s a fantastic existing business with a great customer base,” Chris said.

“If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it,” Debbie added.

The pair also said they liked the café’s family-friendly atmosphere.

“I like the fact mothers can come in here and have a coffee with the kids and feel

Beauty business set to open

By Adam Poulopoulos A former school teacher is set to turn her passion for nails into her own business in the coming week.

Lisa Willis (pictured) is preparing to open the doors to La Vosh Beauty Emporium in a grand opening next Friday, between 5pm and 8pm.

The first day of trading for the business, at 68 Seymour Street, is scheduled for the next day, Saturday, November 8.

The store’s fit-out is likely to continue until early next week, but the signage arrived yesterday.

Lisa said she began doing nails from home when her children were young 15 years ago, and returned to this shortly after injuring her back almost

three years ago, making teaching full-time impossible.

“I thought at least by doing nails I could sit down and not put too much pressure on my back.

“I saw this place and I thought ‘why not bring it to town?”

Lisa said the central location meant clients could have procedures done during their lunch breaks if they wanted.

As well as doing nails, the business will perform spray tans, IPL photorejuvenation and eyelash extensions among other procedures, and will cater to both men and women.

“I called it an emporium because I didn’t want it to fit into a box,” Lisa said.

“It’s like a combination between a salon and a spa.”

The grand opening will see all five staff performing complimentary procedures, with spot prizes, including for best dressed, being given away including a grand prize of a pamper package valued at almost $300.

Online Travel agent for walks launched The owners of Marlborough Sounds guiding business Wilderness guides have set up a new platform promoting New Zealand’s walking tracks.

Juliet and Steve Gibbons, from Picton, announced New Zealand Walks Online earlier this month.

The service offers a specialist online platform allowing customers to book hiking holidays in New Zealand, and can be accessed from multiple devices.

Pest of the month – Purple Loosestrife It’s a lovely colour but it’s not wanted in Marlborough.

Purple Loosestrife (Lythrum salicaria) is one of the invasive weed species on the radar of Council’s Biosecurity staff.

They carry out surveillance and control work for various invasive weed species spotted here in small numbers from time to time but which are not widely established.

Tuesday 28th Domestic dispute At 9:30am a 37-year-old vineyard worker was arrested on George Street after a domestic dispute with his partner. He has been charged with assaulting his partner and breaching his protection order. He was held in custody and appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Wednesday.

Assault charges At 10:35am a 31-year-old unemployed male was arrested at his home address for historic family violence matters. He has been charged with assaulting a female, contravening his protection order and assaulting a child. He appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Wednesday.

Liquid gold comes to Blenheim The chocolate milk craze sweeping the North Island has not made it across the Cook Strait yet, so More FM host Natasha Knox took it on herself to bring the milk to Blenheim.

Lewis Road Creamery Fresh Chocolate Milk, made with Whittaker's 5 Roll Refined Creamy Milk Chocolate, has sent North Island customers into a frenzy, as stores have struggled to cope with long queues and rampant demand.

With Lewis Road Creamery inundated by requests to bring

their product south Natasha used milk from Farm Fresh Milk at Tua Marina, and Whittaker’s chocolate, to make a two-litre batch.

Impressed passers-by sampled the milk outside the Marlborough posting boxes yesterday morning.

Natasha said to make the milk she heated the chocolate, broke it up, whisked it into the milk and chilled the concoction.

“I was really worried about burning the chocolate but it’s Happy customer Julie Burrow tried the milk with More FM's pretty easy.”

Four hundred fish on the drains Less than four years after their Fish on Drains project began, Springlands School pupils celebrated an important milestone yesterday.

Mayor Alistair Sowman was on hand to nail the 400th fish into the ground, at a drain near the top of the Amphitheatre.

The Springlands School GO MAD (Go Make a Difference) environmental group came up with the project, which sees decorative blue Kokopu fish fastened above local drains to promote awareness about keeping the waterways clean.

Since the project began other schools have also become involved with it.

The Mayor addressed the children present, and said he was proud of their work.

“It sends a message. You guys are telling the oldies how much of a difference can be made if you’re careful with your environment.

“When you leave school make sure you don’t leave that behind.”

The milestone did not mark the end of the project.

More fish will be appearing in the near future.

After planting, water your dahlias lightly. Roots and sprouts will form quickly in warm soil.

Adverse event reports down Nelson Marlborough District Health Board hospitals reported eight serious adverse events during the 2013/14 year, down from nine the previous year.

These eight serious events occurred during a year, when NMDHB hospitals had 29,231 admissions, 47,802 Emergency Department visits, and 149,342 outpatient appointments.

A serious adverse event has, or has the potential to result in serious lasting disability or death, not related to the natural course of the patient’s illness or underlying condition.

Chief executive Chris Fleming said “Each one of these adverse events had severe and serious consequences for families, for staff but most of all for the patients themselves.

“Our thoughts and sympathies are with the patients and their families

who entrusted their own health or the health of a loved one to DHB services.

“After each event an investigation is undertaken and actions are audited to minimise the risk of a similar incident occurring in our hospitals.

“As a DHB we are working to create an environment that supplies harmfree care to our patients; however as the summary for 2013/14 shows we still have work to do.

Triathlon T h e Ju l e s Tayl o r W i n e s Marlborough Women’s Triathlon organisers have scheduled a series of fun runs and rides which will also raise money for charity.

Naming sponsor Jules Taylor Wines will donate $1 to the Marlborough Cancer Society for each kilometre that participants walk, run or bike, up to a maximum of $10,000.

You do not have to be enrolled in the triathlon to participate.

The first run set off from the amphitheatre on Sunday.

Triple selection Three Marlborough Touch players are celebrating after being named in the latest New Zealand squads.

Rugby Former Marlborough Boys’ College First XV representative Joe Wheeler is one of three Tasman Makos players ruled out of the New Zealand Maori tour to Japan after injury.

It’s a team game The Jesse Ryder debate has reached fever pitch in recent times, following the Black Caps’ batting struggles against South Africa. Will he be picked, or won’t he? As troubled as he is gifted, Ryder’s career is in limbo, as coach Mike Hesson weighs up the trade-off between on-field benefit and off-field disruption.

On the other side of the world, Steven Adams is making great strides. After a powerful preseason he has been picked to start for the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s striking how Ryder and Adams are currently on different career paths, but both have had problems in the past. Adams arrived at Scots College in Wellington an

antisocial, shy kid off the streets of Rotorua. Development coach and mentor Kenny McFadden took him under his wing, accompanied him to NBA Draft night and helped him settle into American life.

The other thing helping Adams’s acclimatisation is the culture in the OKC locker room. Their two biggest stars, reigning league MVP Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook, are both pretty squeaky-clean. Durant is most associated with the drinks he’s paid to endorse, while the only time Russell causes a ripple off the court is with his frankly absurd post-match outfits. Their veteran players, like Nick Collison, carry

themselves well off the court and set a good example for the younger players.

Ryder’s had mentors in the past, yes, but maybe his team-mates don’t take enough accountability. I’m not absolving him of all blame, but it’s not as if he goes out on his own.

Maybe friends and team-mates need to take more ownership and remove the temptation. The same problem exists in rugby and league especially.

Team dynamics pose a problem in this country, and Adams’s rise, as a player but also as a person, is an example of how a more professional system can benefit Kiwi athletes.

Marlborough defends the Newman Shield this weekend at home to Nelson.

The game begins at Horton Park on Sunday at 11am.

Queen Charlotte Classic turns 21

By Adam Poulopoulos One of Marlborough’s great races comes of age next month as it prepares to celebrate its 21st birthday.

The Alan Scott Family Winemakers Queen Charlotte Classic was first run in 1994, and is set to run again on November 15.

So far competitors from Picton, Blenheim, Nelson, Wellington and Christchurch have signed up for the event.

The multisport race features a 13 kilometre run, from Mistletoe Bay to Anakiwa, a 40km bike ride from Anakiwa to Picton, and an eight km kayak on the open water.

The race can be completed by an individual or a team.

Organiser Peter Yarrell said he was expecting about 100 people to enter the race.

“Everyone enters these things in the week before, so you always hold your breath.

“I would say we’re tracking well.”

The day also features a half-marathon for the fourth time. The run starts at Lochmara Lodge and finishes at Anakiwa.

Yarrell said it was well worth doing.

“It’s a little bit shorter but it’s a tougher half marathon because you’re running up hills and down dales.

“It’s a boutique half because we have to take everyone across there by boat.

“It’s spectacular and challenging. You’re running through native bush, there’s a lot of bird life and a view of the sounds.

“You couldn’t get a better course, but it’s tough.”

About 10 spaces remain for the half-marathon, and Yarrell encouraged participants to enter quickly.

“We got a lot of entries in today (Thursday) actually.

“We could probably have 50 at a pinch.”

In the 20 years to date Yarrell said the race had raised about $200,000 for various charities.

“It’s been a very worthwhile 21 years.”

Karters impress in Dunedin Cricket

Young Marlborough karter William Exton is a South Island karting champion, following the Kartsport South Island Champs in Dunedin over Labour weekend.

Last Friday, in the cadet raket class, Exton started on pole but unfortunately had a spin but recovered to take third place. On Sunday, racing the cadet rok class, William led from start to finish to dominate the final and become South Island champ.

In the seniors Taylor Forbes also had an off-track excursion in the final, but drove very well to finish fifth in the Rotax Heavies.

The 2015 South Island Champs will be held in Blenheim over Labour Weekend, and Kartsport Marlborough’s next meeting at Cresswell Electrical Raceway is on Sunday, starting at noon.

Volleyball junior tournament Marlborough Volleyball’s Subway Spikers & Premier Schools Competition met last Friday afternoon and competed in their first round for this term.

The game played between Witherlea Young Guns and Springwick Combined (name created due to three players from Springlands & one or two from Renwick School) was won by the Springwick team - 25-18, 26-24 and 10-5.

Marlborough Volleyball is very pleased to have Riverlands School back in the Spikers competition and they look to have some talented young volleyballers.

The Riverlands Spikers team played St Marys Setters in the premier div three Grade.

Although St Marys Setters are a younger team

for this grade they have the talent to play in premier division and showed Riverlands their skills.

Riverlands held their own though for their first game and Michaela Boaz served well.

The boys from St Marys Setters showed why they may be the team to beat with great commitment to the ball and reflecting well with set points of; 25-14, 25-12, 25-12.

The other Riverlands team, the Blockbusters playing in Div 2, had a real battle with only two points separating two of the sets against Fairhall Aces, and came out the victors 26-24, 25-16 and 28-26.

In other action Renwick Spikers played Fairhall Flip Flops.

The game had good rallies and both teams constantly played fairly and with a positive attitude.

Flip Flops demonstrated phenomenal serving throughout the game with some going 15 points in a row through a great effort from Harrison McKenzie and Isabella Rohloff.

Fairhall also had very good serve-receive plays and showed promising skill work.

Renwick managed to keep smiles on their faces all through the game despite losing all three sets 25-9, 25-11 and 25-8.

Excellent serving and receiving work was demonstrated by Renwick’s Amy Bain, Arwen Van Pallandt and Kate Bryant.
