Show day Students at Renwick School braved the rain and took their animals to school as part of the school’s show day on Friday.

Students brought over 100 animals, including ferrets, possums, pigs and goats, to school for the day.

Senior students also ran stalls, while indoor competi-

tions including, miniature gardens, decorated plates and miniature scarecrows were also held.

The top three animals will compete at the Tua Marina School-hosted Group Day, to be held tomorrow.

The event will see schools from around the region attend.

By Adam Poulopoulos Negotiations that may see a new health care hub form in Picton are under way.

The discussions involve the White House building at 114 High Street, near the intersection with Broadway.

The Picton Medical Centre hold the lease for the building, and it has been confirmed they will move from their current 71 High Street site into the new building by the middle of next year.

The medical centre holds the lease for their existing premises until the end of 2015 if required.

South Link Health Services are dealing with the negotiations.

South Link business manager Matt Gilchrist said the Marlborough District Council had first discussed the medical centre’s move with them about two years ago, as plans for the Picton Library began to form.

Two options for a new library have been discussed, one being extending the current library into the adjacent space occupied by the medical centre.

However, he added the centre may have moved to new premises regardless.

He said the current medical centre building had done a good job, but was not purpose-built, which meant it was both overcrowded and unsuitable for expansion.

He said it had taken about a year to find a new site for the medical centre.

The Picton Health Care Pharmacy may also be moving into the White House building, from its current 6 High Street site.

Discussions between the pharmacy and South Link are ongoing.

A date has not been given for a decision.

Blacksmithing on show at open day Continued from page 1.

This year it will be held on Sunday, November 2 from 10am - 3pm, with a gold coin donation for entry.

One new attraction will be the blacksmith shed where Warren will be working as blacksmiths would have in the early days.

He will also have the portable forge

operating which people can have a turn on themselves.

Originally from Christchurch, Warren moved to Blenheim at the beginning of the year and happened to visit Brayshaw Park and got talking to one of the members about joining the society.

He came across the shed and with

his strong interest in blacksmithing, Warren set to work cleaning it up and using it to restore a variety of items for the machinery.

“Often some of the members will bring me some rusted and beat up pieces off their machinery which I put on the forge and fix up.

“I also make hoof picks, knives and

do a few decorative items as well. It’s all fun and something I keep amused with,” he grinned.

In addition to the machinery on display, there will be Thomas the Tank Engine and the Old School Bus taking people on rides around the park, as well as a sausage sizzle, tea and coffee.

Jonathan wins award Service to school and community was recognised last night through the Trustpower Marlborough Youth Community Spirit Award, where Jonathan Cash from Marlborough Boys’ College was named as the winner.

The award celebrates the work young people do to enrich their community, and is open to all students who have given service to school or community projects, treated others with care and respect and been a good ambassador for the school and the Marlborough region.

Trustpower community relations representative Jess Somerville said the award was a great opportunity for a generous student with a big heart to be formally congratulated.

“Jonathan has fully embraced life at Marlborough Boys College as a member of the school council for the past four years, he is the president of the Leo’s Club which

helps the community with street clean ups and fundraisers, he is a volleyball referee, a SADD Committee member and a college prefect.”

Miss Somerville said Jonathan had also fundraised for causes like the Christchurch earthquakes and the 40 Hour Famine, while he is also president of the MBC Enviro Council, has worked with the Untouched World Trust on Bluemine Island to protect fauna and flora, and was selected to represent Marlborough at the Sir Peter Blake Youth Enviroleaders Forum earlier in the year.

Jonathan is also a member of the Marlborough Youth Council and is the youth advisor to the Marlborough Youth Trust.

For winning the Award Jonathan received a trophy, certificate and $500 prize money, with $250 being given to a community group of his choice.

STORY UNVEILING The Marlborough Story, a project designed to provide an overview of Marlborough for tourists through written and visual media, is set to be released.

The project will be unveiled on Tuesday, November 4 at the Marlborough District Council chambers.

Garden Marlborough leads list of winners For organising an annual event that brings together the gardening community and also gives back, Garden Marlborough was last night announced as the supreme award winner of the Trustpower Marlborough Community Awards.

Garden Marlborough received a certificate, trophy and $1500 prize money.

Garden Marlborough now has the opportunity to represent the district at the 2014 Trustpower National Community Awards, which are being held in Wellington in March

2015.

Marlborough songstress reaches final

By Adam Poulopoulos Several months ago a former Picton resident was convinced by a family member to audition for a national talent show.

Now, she is relying on the public vote to win the whole thing, after making it through to the grand final.

Lee Stuart, who finished at Marlborough Girls’ College last year, has reached the decider on Homai Te Pakipaki, an interactive singing show shown on Maori Television.

The show is filmed live every Friday night, and singers rely on the public’s text-votes to get through to the next stage of competition.

The 10-person grand final will be shown live at 8:30pm on Friday, November 14.

The text lines open on the night following the performances.

The winner walks away with $20,000, a phone package from 2degrees and nationwide exposure.

Lee is based at a hall of residence in Wellington, where she is studying a bachelor of music, majoring in jazz voice, at Victoria University.

Listing Alicia Keys, Kimbra and her parents as musical influences, Lee has been travelling between Auckland and Wellington to film.

Often accompanied by her guitar, she has performed songs like ‘Summertime’ and ‘Feelin’ Good.’

Up until now she has performed in a studio, but will play in front of several thousand at Auckland’s Logan Campbell Centre in the Lee Stuart at the performance in the Boat- final.

BODY FOUND Police have located missing Blenheim man Louis Fairhall.

The 67-year-old’s body was located in a rural area south of Blenheim on Monday morning, after he went missing last week.

The death is not suspicious and has been reported to the coroner.

Police thank the public for their assistance in the information leading to finding Mr Fairhall.

ROAD INCIDENTS MINOR Local officers on the roads have reported a relatively incident-free holiday weekend around Marlborough.

Highway patrol team leader Barrie Greenall said it was a much more sedate Labour Weekend than usual, with any incidents occurring being relatively minor.

He said several reasons, including ferry cancellations and weather conditions, contributed to the lack of major incidents.

Famous author to launch book in Havelock gallery

When world-famous author Ian Brodie (pictured) was writing his latest book, The Hobbit Motion Picture Trilogy Location Guidebook, he fell in love with Havelock.

One could say it was inevitable being so close to the most accessible location in the Peter Jackson trilogy – the Pelorus River.

It was where cast and crew spent a memorable time filming the atmospheric, action-packed Dwarves in a barrel scene.

So when he was writing the book, the fact that Havelock is the first place mentioned in the South Island comes as no surprise.

The area provided some real-life drama when a flash flood roared through barely half an hour after

the film makers evacuated.

So where else would Ian choose to celebrate his new book? Havelock.

On Saturday, November 8, Ian will be launching his new book at the Gallery Havelock from 6pm and will be speaking about when hobbits came to Marlborough.

For those who want to hear some of the stories behind the making of the movies, or obtain a personally signed copy of his book the invitation is open to the public.

The gallery will also be exhibiting a spectacular selection of the acclaimed photographer’s personal images of the area, donated by him to benefit the local community.

Dust off the leather jacket Fundraising evening for 80s themed fundraiser to benefit Rai Valley School country music awards The Gourmet Paradise Country Music Awards for 2015 is set for January 17-18, but to help bring this iconic event together organisers are holding a fundraising social evening on November 8.

Those who saw 2014 winners Unfinished Business perform at the January awards will be pleased to know the band will be returning for the fundraiser.

The event will be held from 7:30pm till late and will feature a number of local acts, including Ange Cook, Fiona Bonniface and Rick McCallum.

Shane Keating from Unfinished Business will play the keyboard throughout the evening accompanied

by Aroha Williams from Motueka.

Locals Bruce Windleburn and Andrew Fairhall will also be joining the evening’s entertainment.

Organisers say music performed will be a mix and not strictly all country, making for a great night out.

Tickets for the fundraiser cost $15 and include nibbles, and are available from the Clubs of Marlborough, Ken Ham’s MusicWorks or by phoning Carolyn Coles on (03) 577 8109.

Rai Valley woman Lydia Randall has come up with a fun way to fundraise for the area’s school which struggles each year to gain sponsorship.

The Rai Valley Area School is currently looking at funding a pool solar heating system and basic upgrades and maintenance in order to enable the students and community to use the pool for longer periods over summer and autumn.

To help fund this project Lydia has organised a Rai Valley 80s -themed fundraiser, Night Out, for November 8, giving the locals an occasion to pull out their old leather jackets, dust off their roller blades and tease up

those tresses.

“I encourage the community to dress to impress, it’s going to be a fun evening that directly benefits the school,”Lydia said.

She has had an overwhelming sponsorship response from not only the local region, but nationwide businesses too.

Over $10,000 in prizes have been donated and will be up for grabs on the night, including return flights to Wellington, an Abel Tasman kayaking trip, a nestle coffee machine, a Hanmer Springs family pass, a $400 horse trek, a two person night’s stay at the beautiful Kimi Ora Eco Resort, plus much more.

It was Lydia’s intention that every ticket holder will take home a prize.

Tickets cost $10 each and are available from the Brick Oven Cafe in Rai Valley and from the school’s library.

Lights over Marlborough back again Lights over Marlborough is the annual Whitney Street School fireworks display held in November each year at Marlborough’s A&P Showgrounds, and is the school’s major fundraiser for the year.

In 2014 Lights over Marlborough will be held on Saturday, November 15.

During this month’s school holidays, the banner the school uses to promote the event went up with the assistance

of installers from Marlborough Lines.

Staff and students are in the process of preparing for the jubilee but in order to organise the official celebrations, the school needs to form a jubilee committee.

Dear Ed, In reference to the Maxwell Rd resident who commented on how difficult it has been to stop the delivery of the “Property Express.”

I tried for many months to stop my front burse from being littered with that and the Mid week and Weekend versions, but success came only after I gathered them all up and took them into their Blenheim office and threat-

ened the publishers with legal action unless they ceased.

That I gained success.

What surprises me is why it is allowed by the council.

You can often find these unwanted publications laying sodden in the kerb or roadway, or worse still blocking drains.

It is high time that this dangerous practice was halted for good.

Dear Ed, There were five letters to the editor in the Sun on 22 October which all had what I consider legitimate concerns, but which all were signed with nom de plumes.

While there may be the occasional situation where a

Montessori celebrates Not my property please 20 years next month Montessori House of Children opened the doors of a completely refurbished villa in Francis Street in November 1994 to provide pre-schooling of a special nature to Marlborough children.

Now, hundreds of students later, the pre-school is marking its 20th Anniversary with a weekend of celebrations on 14th and 15th November.

A formal celebration with

families and staff will take place on Friday 14 at the preschool. Kaikoura’s Member of Parliament, Stuart Smith, and Mayor Alistair Sowman will attend and plant a tree and time capsule to commemorate the 20th Anniversary.

The Montessori House of Children will be open to the public on Saturday 15 November from 11 – 2pm.

Parenting challenges Picton couple Jack and Kirsty Saxon welcomed their twins Xavier and Lilian on December 7, 2013 and despite finding it daunting having two newborns at one time, they feel ‘blessed’ to be raising twins.

Kirsty shares her story with reporter Celeste Lodewyk and explains why she has taken on the role of Nelson Marlborough Multiple Birth Club co-ordinator.

Kirsty and Jack, already parents to daughter Ruby, found out at their scan they were having twins.

“The radiologist looked around for a while before pointing out a teeny tiny blob and said ‘that’s the first baby’, then pointed to another blob ‘and that’s the second baby’.

“I was bubbling with excitement and my husband was thrilled, though after that there were plenty of moments when I was worried and scared about having two babies,” Kirsty said.

From an early stage in the pregnancy Kirsty joined the Christchurch Multiple Birth Club, the parent club for half of the South Island, from Timaru to Nelson and Marlborough.

“I felt they provided wonderful support and information for families, helping to prepare us for twins, plus I was lucky to have a wonderful midwife, Nicky Taylor, who delivered our first child and I felt a strong connection with.”

Her pregnancy wasn’t without its trials, with two threatened pre-term labours, where each time she was flown by Westpac Rescue Helicopter to Wellington.

Fortunately both times her labour was stopped with medical intervention.

Kirsty carried the twins up until 37 weeks gestation before delivering them via caesarian section at Wairau Hospital.

Both babies were breach so this was deemed the safest option, and with how well they were doing Kirsty was able to take them home a week later.

“I was so excited to finally meet the babies, especially because the pregnancy was emotionally and physically challenging. But they were a wonderful prize at the end.

“Xavier and Lilian were absolutely perfect and I was so thrilled they were here. I still have moments now when I can’t believe how lucky and blessed we

are to be raising twins,” she says.

Asked what she had learned and experienced since having twins, Kirsty replied; “Having two newborns at once is a daunting task.

“However my husband is very family focused and is involved in all aspects of our children’s care.

“We are also so lucky to have both sets of parents within five minutes. They are amazing grandparents, very hands on and their grandies adore all of them, and my mum has been my wonderful constant companion, nanny, cook, cleaner, therapist and dog walker this year,” she laughed.

Her most valued advice for parenting multiples is to ‘enjoy the little things in life’.

“One day you will look back and realise these were the big things, so surround yourself with people who will love, support, listen, laugh and cry with you.

And remember... everything happens for a reason,” she says.

Kirsty is currently co-ordinating a network of families with multiples in order to provide support and events in the Marlborough area.

“I am really passionate about helping out expectant mums with information and advice. I had a very thankful new mum this week who was filled with gratitude for having a (semi) experienced twin mama on her ‘team’,” she says.

Kirsty has organised an informal play date for families with multiples and their supporters on Sunday November 2, at 11am at Pollard Park.

Any family of multiples is welcome and they do not need to be a member of the MMBC. “We would love to meet some new faces to create a strong satellite club in our region.”

Trust’s grants benefit Pelorus communities One of the many recipients of grants awarded recently by the Pelorus Area Health Trust was Jo Douglas.

Jo, now a qualified paramedic for the St John service, has been supported by the trust through its education grants.

The Pelorus Area Health Trust marked its sixth year in January of this year, celebrating the history of its formation.

The trust was borne out of the community concern for the Havelock Medical Centre's loss of its rural status and potential loss of services for the Pelorus Area.

With support from the wider Pelorus communities and practical assistance from Colin King and Marlborough Community Law office, the trust was registered as a charitable trust with four inaugural trustees.

It's vision was to promote, protect and enhance access to primary health care for the Pelorus communities is assured.

Laura sails into Marlborough

By Adam Poulopoulos The youngest sailor to navigate solo around the world is coming to Marlborough next month, as she looks to inspire others to chase their dreams.

Nineteen-year-old Laura Dekker will be in Marlborough on Thursday, November 6, and will be speaking to students at Queen Charlotte College and Marlborough Girls’ College during the day.

She will also be speaking at the Queen Charlotte Yacht Club at 6:30pm.

The visit is part of a nationwide promotional tour for her new book ‘One Girl, One Dream,’ which accounts her journey around the world and is released next month.

Born in Whangarei to Dutch and German parents, Laura began her trip at 14 and finished on Sint Maarten, a Caribbean Island, aged 16 years and 123 days.

Overcoming government objections and the obvious nautical challenges, Laura said she wanted to show others their dreams were achievable.

“If you really want to achieve something go for it.

“It’s a very big example but you can apply it to anything you do.”

She said she appreciated the good moments more because of the hurdles she had overcome.

be her second, having come on a nationwide road trip and explored the Marlborough Sounds in March last year.

QCYC commodore Ian Gardiner said he was excited the club’s talented coach and young fleet would be able to listen to Laura.

“We’re trying to make it a big event for the kids on the night.

It’ll be a social event for kids and parents at the club.

“A couple of parents said they hope she isn’t too inspirational – they don’t want their kids sailing around the world just yet!”

Laura begins her tour on Monday in Palmerston North. She currently lives on her boat Guppy, the same boat she navigated the world on, in Whangarei Marina.

Special Olympics Swimming Special Olympics New Zealand held its Marlborough Region Schools Aquatics Open Day at Marlborough Line Stadium 2000 last Thursday.

About 35 students from six schools competed in the event.

Organiser Graeme Bain said the

event went well.

“We had some great volunteers helping, and for our guys, it’s just about being able to compete, and the smiles on their faces.

“There were lots of parents there too.”

On your marks

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim man is putting the final touches on his car as he prepares to take on the New Zealand Silver Fern Rally next month.

Jim Vause will be racing his 1985 Toyota Corolla GTV in the rally, which begins at the bottom of High Street in Picton at 12:30pm on Saturday, November 8.

Jim’s son Andy will be sharing co-driving and driving duties with his father.

They a re the rally’s only Marlborough entry.

Jim sourced the car in 2012 and with the help of mechanic Graeme Gill, stripped it down and built it up again.

He said he had sacrificed a lot to get ready for the event.

“It takes a lot of work, time and

effort.

“The opportunity to do it is not something you get very easily. I’ve dropped other sports and pastimes to get ready.”

The historic division Jim is competing in sees drivers traverse about 1150 kilometres around the South Island, finishing in Queenstown on November 15.

Jim, who has been rally driving for 36 years, said he was excited to be able to race around the island.

“It’s one of those bucket list-type things, and it’s quite rare to do one of them on proper roads, especially good roads.

“You’re driving through iconic pieces of New Zealand countryside.”

Jim’s most similar previous rally experience, the 1980 Motogard

Rally, was cut short after three days by a loose wheel.

He said the aim was to finish the rally.

“We’ve got eight days of it. We’ll be starting quietly, don’t you worry.

“If we drive flat-out all the way through we’ll break something.”

Jim said his team still needed to make some minor tweaks to the car, as well as have it sign written and the GPS system installed.

The first six stages of the event will be held in Marlborough on the opening day, before the cars drive to Westport the following day.

It is the lightest driving day of the rally, with about 56km altogether.

The rally has attracted international drivers, with 55 from six countries competing.

Chopper returns

By Adam Poulopoulos Chopper impersonator Heath Franklin has fond memories of his previous trips to Blenheim, and says the crowd can expect an even lewder Chopper than they see on 7 Days.

Heath/Chopper is bringing his Repeat Offender show to Blenheim next month as part of a six-stop tour.

His set is at the Marlborough Civic Theatre on November 14.

The material is described as covering ‘that moment where every part of your body wants to smash something in half, like an amphetamine-addled Godzilla, but takes a few deep breaths, reassesses the situation and then does it anyway.’

Heath said the audience would be getting an uncensored version of Chopper.

“People should come and see the show and have a giggle.

“They can hear all the things I say on 7 Days that can’t be put

to air.”

Chopper has been to Blenheim twice before, and Heath said his visit in late 2012 conjured up a

particularly vivid memory.

“One time I got three or four guys on stage and got them to take their pants off.

“One of the guys was going Joey Commando that day, and the crowd got more than they bargained for.

“I think he’ll wear underwear for the next Chopper show.”

He said he needed to get around to booking a holiday around New Zealand.

“There’s a big difference between Auckland and the rest of New Zealand. It’d be nice to go for a bit of a hoon and have a look around.

“Blenheim’s quite nice and the wine country is nice to drive through.

“When you’re on tour you spend a lot of time driving past things you should probably stop at.”

Portia wins top sport prizes

By Adam Poulopoulos It has been a big sporting year for Marlborough Girls’ College student Portia Barcello (pictured).

The year 13 student was recognised as the school’s sportsperson of the year at sports prizegiving earlier this month.

Portia also picked up four other awards, as under-19 athletics champion, senior 100 metres champion, under-19 cross country champion and for her work as a netball student coach.

Last week she was also inducted onto the Marlborough Sports Roll of Honour after being selected for the New Zealand Secondary School Maori Netball team.

Portia said being selected as sportsperson of the year came as

a shock.

“I actually didn’t expect it. A lot of the girls have done awesome stuff.

“It was a good surprise.”

As well as netball, cross country and athletics, she rowed at this year’s Maadi Cup, finishing eighth in the women’s double she raced with Jess Donald.

“It wasn’t really the result we wanted, but we still made the final,” she said.

When netball and rowing overlapped, she would train about 30 hours a week, and she rides horses in her spare time.

She puts down her passion for sport to being “a little addicted to

exercise.”

“I like to set myself goals and having things to work towards.”

She said making the New Zealand under-19 netball tournament team, following the secondary schools championships in Dunedin, was her personal athletic highlight for the year.

Portia leaves for Wellington earlier next year to study commerce at Victoria University, and she plans to continue playing netball when she gets there.

Before that she is competing in the Marlborough Women’s Triathlon, and is off to trial for the South Island Maori Netball Team.

Judoist continues comeback with gold

By Adam Poulopoulos A young Marlborough judoka has ramped up her comeback from a serious knee injury by attending the New Zealand Judo Championships, and returning with two medals.

Marlborough Girls’ College year 12 student Sophia Warburton won uncontested gold medals in the under 78 kilogram cadet women, and under 78kg junior women divisions at the tournament, held in Christchurch earlier this month.

It was her first competitive tournament since she snapped ligaments and tore cartilage in her right knee at a New Zealand training camp in Wanganui in early 2012.

Sophia had a handful of open-weight fights in Christchurch, but she said the tournament was more about assessing how her knee was progressing.

“It’s feeling pretty good. It’s not 100 percent but it’s pretty good.

“I was so nervous but once I got on the mat it was pretty exciting, to be honest.”

She said with a few more training sessions, the meet could have gone even

better.

After the injury Sophia had two months of physiotherapy and three operations.

Now, doctors have told her they can no longer operate for fear of making the injury worse, so she has adopted a strengthening programme which includes cycling, squats and hamstring curls.

Months previous she had fought and won gold and silver medals in her age group at the 2011 national champs in Auckland.

She said although she had won gold, she was looking to fight and reclaim the tiles she won in 2011.

“At the end of next year, I want to take back the New Zealand title.

“My plan is to get all the golds relatable to me next year.

“I feel a lot more worthy if I fight for a medal and win it.”

Sophia was joined in Christchurch by Blenheim Judo Club coach David Foley, who won an uncontested gold in the under 73kg legends division, for 60-69 Sophia Warburton hopes there is more to come after her Christchurch comeback. year-olds.
