Kids spark blaze

By Adam Poulopoulos Two boys are being investigated following the fire on the Wither Hills over the weekend.

The boys, both aged 11, lit the fire shortly before noon on Sunday in a pine plantation on the south side of the Rotary Lookout.

They have been spoken to by police and the Marlborough Kaikoura Rural Fire Authority, and the investigation is ongoing.

A police spokesperson said no punishment would be handed down until the investigation was complete.

By Adam Poulopoulos The president of the Vintage Car Club’s Marlborough branch, Lyall Mooney, says he was “overwhelmed” with the turnout at the club’s biannual rally over the weekend.

About 70 car enthusiasts from as far south as Otago gathered at Brayshaw Park for the start of the

rally on Saturday.

The cars drove through vineyards and wineries around the area, including Wither Hills, Rarangi and Seresin, before meeting at Tua Marina School for lunch.

The club had a gathering at Clubs of Marlborough on Saturday night, before hosting a car boot sale on Sunday.

By Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough Dream Wedding winners Michelle and Keiran Hickman enjoyed an “emotional and special day” last Saturday when the Seddon couple were wed in front of around 120 family members and friends.

Now officially ‘Mrs Hickman’, Michelle said the wedding was more than she could have imagined.

“Keiran and I could never have had everything that was put together for us, the whole thing was absolutely amazing.

“Our guests loved the venues and commented on how great the people behind this wedding were. They really enjoyed themselves,” she said.

She said the highlight of the day came when she was walking down the aisle.

“I was smiling the whole way because I was so happy and Keiran had a little tear in his eye.

Our guests were also crying and even clapped as I walked down, it was a really emotional, happy and special moment I will never forget.

Rowers dominate hall of fame inductees

By Adam Poulopoulos It has been a big year for Marlborough’s athletes, with seven inducted into the Marlborough Sports Hall of Fame at this year’s ceremony on Monday evening.

The figure is up on last year, when only four were inducted.

Five of those inducted were rowers. Sophie MacKenzie, brothers Robbie and Karl Manson, Olympian Joseph Sullivan and Fiona Paterson were all recognised, along with shearer Angus Moore and Commonwealth Games squash representative Megan Craig.

MacKenzie became the world lightweight double sculls champion at the World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam earlier in the year, while the brothers also competed at the same meet.

To be inducted into the Hall of Fame athletes must have full New Zealand representation

and be resident in Marlborough at the time of selection.

The ceremony was held at the Marlborough District Council Chambers, and Mayor Alistair Sowman, who formally welcomed the inductees, said it was “an honour” to do so. ”Those being honoured today have helped maintain Marlborough’s record and in doing so have earned their own place in our collective sporting memory.”

Age-group or representatives of other New Zealand teams were also recognised as they were inducted onto the Roll of Honour.

Thirty-one Marlburians went onto the Roll of Honour, up from 18 a year ago.

Investigation into fire ongoing inbriefThe Sun Continued from page 1 Deputy principal rural fire officer John Foley said the fire did not appear to have been deliberately lit.

“They were up there playing among the trees, generally having a good time really, and it just went from there.”

Mr Foley would not comment on how the fire was lit.

The first firefighters were on the scene at about 11:30am, and while most stayed until dusk, when the fire was contained, a crew remained overnight to contain any flare-ups.

Overall, a group of about 40 firefighters from the Blenheim, Awatere, Rarangi and Koromiko Rural Fire Services, and the Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade, were present at the blaze.

Three helicopters, two from Marlborough and one from Nelson, were also present.

The fire was contained, but not before it had burnt through 6.9 hectares of pine trees and scrub.

It will not be declared out for another few weeks, until all remaining hotspots disappear.

Mr Foley said the flames were travelling from the top of the hill down towards properties on Taylor Pass Road, and while the fire was “certainly not the biggest,” it could have been worse.

“If it had been lit in another two months it

could have been a different story.

“All the grass surrounding the block was green, and the flames didn’t go outside the plantation.

“It’s just unfair it went through that block of trees, which were probably planted for erosion purposes.”

With summer approaching, Mr Foley said the incident was a timely reminder of the dangers.

“Some areas may look dry but they’re dry enough to carry the flames.

“Some people have left hot piles of ash, and it’s like having a hangi sitting on top.”

About 20 rural fire officers were deployed to dampen hotspots on Monday after they showed up on a thermal imaging flight that morning.

The park has now been reopened, but runners and cyclists are asked to stay away from marked areas, and to be aware of falling trees and hotspots.

The situation will be reassessed tomorrow after another thermal imaging flight.

Public input on library welcomed

By Adam Poulopoulos The public is being invited to have their say on the future of Picton’s library facilities, as discussions begin in the Marlborough District Council.

The building of a new facility is one of the four projects council has identified as high-priority looking to the next couple of years.

About six million dollars has been set aside for the project by council, part of a larger fund allocated to both the Picton and Blenheim library projects.

Councillor David Oddie said the aim was to get the project off the ground in 2016, and the Picton project would likely be addressed before the Blenheim one.

He said it was up to the public to tell council what they wanted to see.

“This is quite an exciting time for the community. They can have their say on what they want from a community hub.”

CASE ADJOURNED The court case involving local priest Aidan Kay has been adjourned to a later date.

Father Kay, formerly of St Mary’s Catholic Parish, pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault at a hearing last month, following an incident earlier this year.

The charge was thrown out as the two parties moved to start a process of restorative justice.

Kay was due to appear at the Blenheim District Court again on Monday. No reason was given for the adjournment.

YOUTHS ARRESTED Two students were taken into custody in the early hours of Saturday morning after being found in possession of both cannabis and cannabis utensils.

The boys, aged 13 and 14, were found on the Whitney Street School grounds.

Both boys were returned to their respective parents, and have been referred to the Marlborough Police Youth Aid Section.

FIREARMS EXPIRY Marlborough Police arms staff are reminding all firearms licence holders to check their expiry date.

Police send a courtesy letter to remind licence holders of their expiry but sometimes the letter does not find its mark.

“The shape is not ideal for shifting internal walls around either.”

He said discussions also needed to continue over what a modernday library looks like.

“Last year paper book use dropped 68 percent and e-book use rose 133 percent.

“It might have some breakout rooms and things like that.”

The next step is to undertake preliminary research and drawings, following council’s next Community and Finance Committee meeting in six weeks’ time.

BUS OFF ROAD The Mitre 10 Mega bus went off the road and into hedges at Omaka Cemetery yesterday.

The incident occurred just after 2:30pm.

The bus was heading out of Wither Road and turned right.

The other circumstances of the crash were unclear at the time of publication.

Trust’s grants support vital services

By Colin King The 40 strong group that attended the Pelorus Area Health Trust’s AGM at the weekend is a testimony to the importance that the Sounds community attaches to this vital organisation.

A number of $500 grants were presented at the AGM to Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter, St John Cadets, Havelock community garden, Life Flight and the Pelorus Pre-School.

Education grants were also made to Tom Currie who is now in his sixth year medical doctor’s degree and who has worked part time at the Havelock Medical Centre.

Jo Douglas, also a benefactor of the Trust’s educational grant is now a fully trained St John paramedic and a supporter of the local branch and asset to the community.

The final beneficiary was Kyle Jones who is now at Massey University working towards becoming a qualified

The Trust has also purchased ten defibrillators over the past six years and now has these strategically distributed throughout the Sounds.

All of this was made possible after founding members set up the Trust after the loss of a full time doctor, so it could apply for funding through

the Marlborough PHO and NMDHB. From day one the Trust was determined to become selfsufficient.

It set up its own shop, the Treasure Chest, to accept donated goods and sell on to the community.

This has gone a long way toward future proofing the

Trust and enabling it to fund a number of very worthy organisations that it sees as providing the rural community with services into the future.

This Trust is an example to other rural communities that find it hard to sustain the services that people in larger communities take for granted.

Stunning images in fundraising calendar Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk When photographer Kevin Judd was approached by the Marlborough Cancer Society to assist with a fundraising project, his immediate reply was “yes”.

His contribution toward the society’s perpetual calendar project titled ‘Milestones’ was to provide a selection of professional images taken throughout Marlborough.

This project was completed and sales began last year and to date, there are around 1000 remaining to sell at $20 each.

In addition to the calendar Kevin has also provided a number of limited edition archival images which have been printed at 500mm x 450mm and are on sale at Framers on Queens for $120 each.

All profits from the sale of these prints will also benefit the Marlborough Cancer Society.

“When I was approached to have an involvement in the calendar I jumped at the opportunity.

“It’s great to be supporting a charity and I am keen to do more for the Marlborough Cancer Society,” Kevin said.

Dear Ed, Like acquaintances, I’ve been suffering picking up the “litter” of the Property Express, tossed somewhat unceremoniously on to my property by a nonchalant driver of a fairly rapidly moving vehicle, for several years now; and this past year I have remonstrated three times with the distributors to stop it, but to no avail.

To top it off, just today I was checking the letterbox for mail, and I kid you not that a fairly hefty Property Express flew past within a few feet and crashed into the garden, after being hurled by a woman from a vehicle at a rate that could’ve taken an eye out or bloodied my nose.

This form of advertising is not only the most ecounfriendly in town, but also downright dangerous; and I’m quite sure that if that flying Property Express had injured me I would’ve had a sizable legal claim in my favour.

MRI cost?

Dear Ed, I refer to your Friday issue dated 17th October. The subject issue refers ‘New MRI scanner for Blenheim’.

Local people will be keen to have been told that a scanner is now available with less transport to Nelson as a consequence.

However, the fact that a private firm is involved in purchasing this machine rather than the hospital in Blenheim, will mean that probably it will be necessary to pay for this service which had been free at the Nelson hospital so that as the Doctor will probably not mention that when you obtain Response from Dr Lance Lawler, Chief Executive of Pacific Radiology Group.

Pacific Radiology is currently working through the details of how the new MRI scanner will be made available to all patients in Marlborough.

Once completed, any DHB patient currently referred to Nelson for an MRI will be able to have that procedure carried out in Blenheim at no charge – with considerable savings in travel time and costs.

Why are you closed?

Dear Ed, I was driving family members staying from overseas through the Queen Charlotte Drive on Wednesday, around lunchtime, and we were regularly stopping along the way for photos and to have a look around.

We kept spotting signs out advertising art galleries, jewellery, pottery, Maori art but everything had a closed sign up.

Dear Ed, What a lucky bride, meeting Sonny Bill Williams on your wedding day. I only wish he was at mine, although I may have left my husband at the altar and gone with him (hehe). Only kidding.

I bet you will have plenty to talk about each wedding anniversary or when the grandchildren ask about your wedding day.

But I think by then they won’t know who SBW is.

At least you have the photographic evidence.

This was frustrating as there were so many tourists driving along that day, and we would have loved to stop and my family would even make purchases as momentoes of their time in Marlborough.

Perhaps they could all combine into one large shop in Havelock or Picton which stayed open during the week?

Dear Ed, I think back to my younger days when everything we did then is considered so dangerous now.

Digging holes and building dirt mounds for our bikes, climbing high trees, taking off for the day to have a picnic up the top of my parents farm property - those were the good old days.

I think they were what kept five children entertained and out of trouble. I think this is what is wrong with today’s generation, kids spend too much time inside, in front of the idiot box or in their rooms with the curtains drawn.

My advice, send the kids outside. Build them a fort or tree house, let them get dirty and play in the mud. It’s these memories that kids will always remember - not the video games they were playing.

Changing lives February 2011 was an unforgettable month for local woman Mary Hart. She endured the Christchurch earthquakes, as well as becoming the full time carer for her three grandchildren after they were uplifted and placed with her.

Mary talks to reporter Celeste Lodewyk about becoming a ‘Whanau Caregiver’ through New Zealand’s Child Youth and Family foster care system.

Today, Mary is the Marlborough co-ordinator for Foster Hope’s Kits for Kids, a charitable organisation that helps to provide the basics for children in foster care.

Kits for Kids provides backpacks filled with necessities for children aged 0-17 years placed into foster care.

Mary shares her story in the hope it will inspire people to support her cause.

Mary, who was living in Christchurch at the time, became the fulltime carer for her three month old grandson David who arrived on February 4 2011 with only a baby bag containing nappies and three changes of clothes.

One week later Mary’s two grandchildren Krista, 2, and Rosie, 18 months, also arrived.

This was a huge change for Mary who was accustomed to having plenty of free time, but unfortunately due to domestic violence, the three children needed to be placed with her full time.

“It was actually a wonderful change, I never hesitated when they came to me but it was challenging to begin with,” she said.

When the earthquakes began to rock Christchurch, Mary’s concern was keeping the children safe and she recalls sitting under the table with them, doing jigsaw puzzles to keep them distracted.

“It was an extremely traumatic time for them, although David who was an infant probably thought it was like having an automatic bouncer,” she smiled.

Mary was offered a house transfer through Housing NZ and chose Blenheim where she has since put down permanent roots.

“Blenheim offered a safer and healthier environment to bring the kids up in, as well as a fresh start.”

After settling in Mary was approached by the local co-ordinator for ‘Foster Hope’ and asked to take over her position.

From her own experience with David, Mary knew first hand what it was like to receive a

child with very few belongings so she took the opportunity to “help make a difference with other foster children”.

“I instantly said yes, it’s a service that is really needed, particularly around Christmas time when more children are uplifted due to domestic violence,” she said.

Mary began her Kits for Kids appeal last year which saw a number of local businesses and community members donate everything from toothbrushes and toiletries through to Christmas gifts.

“The response was overwhelming, I was so blown away by how generous the community has been.

“I am so grateful to everyone who has supported this by donating, especially businesses such as Pams Charitable Trust, Redwood Pharmacy and Westmount School who make ongoing donations.”

The Sun Newspaper is again supporting Kits for Kids leading up to Christmas by collecting donations at its High Street office.

To make her kits, Mary requires basics such as hygiene products including toothpaste, shampoo and deodorant, as well as items to show children they are loved, such as books and soft toys.

“I try and include a soft toy for the younger children so they have something to cuddle up to and be comforted by when sleeping in a strange bed in a strange house.

“I also like to include underwear and socks, even if I have to buy them myself.

“I can’t do much more than that because I am on a limited income, that’s why I am appealing to the community to come on board and please help,” she said.

Mary collects the donated items, makes up the backpacks and passes them on to CYF site manager, Kaye MacDonald who distributes them to Marlborough foster families in desperate need.

Family inspiration

Mother and daughter Monique and Sharon Gemmell have achieved so much in their academic studies that some might say they are an inspiration.

Monique and Sharon were both mothers at a young age and both struggled in their own rights, but with the support of their whanau they have become successful businesswomen.

In 2007 they both began their Masters of Maori Studies with Te Whare Wananga O Awanuiarangi which they will graduate from in April, as well as completing a Masters in Education at Victoria University.

In addition to this Monique and Sharon are enrolled in the Professional Doctoral in Indigenous Advancement and Development and are currently completing their first year.

For Monique education is a life-long process, something she makes her five children aware of.

“Education doesn’t just stop once you’ve finished college, getting the tohu, for me, is really about completing what I started,” she said.

For Sharon studying alongside her daughter “strengthens our relationship”.

“As we go through the programme the impact builds upon our children, grandchildren and my great grandchildren, and our driving force has made the family more aware of the importance of education,” she said.

Are you promotion- or prevention-focused?

Feeling motivated is an essential aspect of job satisfaction. But causes for motivation vary widely from person to person.

In general, there tend to be two main motivation types: promotion-focused and prevention-focused.

Promotion-focused professionals are classic creatives and entrepreneurs.

They work quickly, seize new opportunities and think abstractly.

The downside is that they can

be impulsive, overly optimistic and are likely to make bigger mistakes.

Prevention-focused professionals are just the opposite, focused on maintaining the status quo and protecting all they’ve worked on.

These professionals prefer planning, reliability, thoroughness and analytical thinking.

While we all need a little bit of promotion- and preventionoriented thinking, it’s important to determine which way you lean before diving down a career path.

A prevention-focused person, for example, would do far better as a developer in a major corporation than launching her own startup.

A promotion-oriented person will likely feel suffocated in a traditional 9-to-5, thriving instead in a more creative environment with bigger risks and bigger rewards.

Work out if you are promotion or prevention focused before choosing a career path, it may help steer your decision.

Scholarships offered The University of Canterbury is offering unlimited undergraduate scholarships valued at up to $3000 for students enrolling for 2015 study.

The scholarships are available for those students who achieve merit or excellence endorsements in NCEA Level 3 (or equivalent) in 2014.

Cash scholarships range from $1,000 - $3,000 in value and are awarded to students who have completed a university entrance qualification at a New Zealand secondary school and are beginning their first year of an undergraduate degree at the University of Canterbury.

Applicants must enrol at UC no more than one calendar year after they have completed their university entrance qualification and must be studying full time.

Casey Beech is the Aukati Kaipaipa co-ordinator for Te Hauora O Ngati Rarua, Marlborough.

Quit smoking with support

Aukati Kaipaipa is quit smoking programme designed to encourage Maori and their whanau to stop smoking.

It is a kanohi ki te kanohi (faceto-face) service that is delivered locally within most communities, which means that it is accessible to everyone.

The quitting programme of the Aukati Kaipaipa service offers Maori an opportunity to stop smoking through a range of activities and products which includes the opportunity to be given free nicotine patches, gum and/or lozenges (NRT) supported by motivational counselling and ongoing support.

The goal of Aukati Kaipaipa is to reduce the smoking prevalence and consumption amongst Maori. The programme also aims to increase the positive attitudes towards supporting the smokefree kaupapa - such as smokefree environments, smokefree homes and smokefree cars, in particularly for tamariki.

Casey Beech is the Aukati Kaipaipa Coordinator for Te Hauora O Ngati Rarua.

She is experienced in working with whanau, working one-to-one and in delivering group based therapy.

Te Hauora O Ngati Rarua are the only service in Marlborough to deliver Aukati Kaipaipa, which covers the area between the French Pass and Kekerengu.

Working closely with whanau means Casey is able to get to know her clients

well enough to work out their triggers for why they smoke and personalise their quitting plans to suit and a smokelyser (carbon monoxide reader) also assists to help whanau reduce their smoking.

Aukati Kaipaipa provides smoking support to schools and workplaces and has been the main cessation support for the latest nationwide Stoptober promotion.

Stoptober is a new smokefree initiative funded by the Ministry of Health under its Pathway to Smokefree 2025 Innovation Fund.

It aims to reach all New Zealanders who smoke; including those affected by smoking and in particular Maori and Pacific people who have the highest smoking prevalence.

With smoking being the single largest cause of preventable deaths worldwide, with an estimated 5000 deaths each year, Stoptober is focussing on getting 10% of the NZ smoking population (46,300 people) registering to attempt to quit smoking during the month of October and remain smokefree for at least three months, which works well with Aukati Kaipaipa.

In Marlborough their have been at least 30 people who have registered and are attempting to quit during the month of October supported by Aukati Kaipaipa as a result of this campaign.

Centennial exhibition a big draw card It’s been years in the making but finally the opening stage of the Nelson Provincial Museum’s WWI centennial exhibition was officially launched on August 5 - 100 years to the day that it was announced in New Zealand that Great Britain (and therefore NZ) was at war with Germany.

The extraordinary stories of these ordinary men and women make compelling reading.

The contribution made by those who served in World War One is being honoured by the Nelson Provincial Museum, telling the stories of many of them through this exhibition as ‘the war to end all wars’ is remembered.

Crowds turn out for Kids Duathlon Sport The Marlborough Kids Duathlon held at Brancott Estate on Sunday was a huge success, with 400 children from across the region taking part in the ‘have a go’ event.

Children from over twenty schools from all around Marlborough participated in the annual fun run / bike / run event.

Co-chairperson of the not-for-profit cha r ity Jenny Maclean said the Marlborough Kids Duathlon was a fun event where every child is encouraged to have a go and take part.

“This year has seen us again reach 400 participants – it’s encouraging to see its continued popularity and the enjoyment the children get from their achievement.”

The participants were certainly pleased with their efforts.

Fairhall School year three student Jacob Gray entered for the first time this year.

“I didn’t know I could run and bike that fast. It was fun and I feel proud that I took part,” he said.

Local and national business generously donated to ensure that each participant received a goodie bag as their reward, over 130 spot prizes were given away, and three lucky individuals took home a major prize each.

Plus the school with the highest ratio to entries were awarded with sports equipment for their school.

The school prize of a team lacrosse set went to Rapaura School, with Grovetown School a very close second.

Next year’s event will be held at the same location on Sunday, October 18.

SOFTBALL The Saints Rams softball team won two games out of two over the weekend, the last round of games before teams take a break for the two long weekends.

They beat Nelson team United Titans 7-0 before recording a 14-0 win over Manawahine.

In the other game, Central defeated United Titans 12-4.

Gymnasts compete well

Rally to begin in Marlborough Fifty-five drivers from six different countries driving fourteen different marques ranging from Skoda to BMW will converge on Marlborough next month for the 2014 epay Silver Fern Rally.

The event consists of the New Zealand Silver Fern Historic Trophy for two-wheel-drive cars, the New Zealand Silver Fern Challenge, which caters for two-wheel-drive cars that comply with the Motorsport New Zealand Schedule A safety requirements, and the Silver Frond which takes place over the last three days of the event only.

The National Championships were successful for three Blenheim Gymnastic Club members who competed.

Milly Burfoot, Judith Marfell and Tyler Budny (pictured) all competed as part of a Top of the South team earlier in Auckland this month.

Judith, in step 7, performed well, achieving a position in the bars final, which is a tremendous feat given the calibre of competition in that step.

She was fifth overall in that step and a member of the silver medal-winning team.

Milly, in Step 6, achieved a gold medal on vault and performed credibly overall.

Tyler, also in Step 6, competed well but did not medal.

November 8. That night, competitors stay in Blenheim before they leave Marlborough and head across the island. The rally ends on Saturday, November 15 in Queenstown.

The rally will cover 1150 kilometres of competitive Special Stages over eight days, and organisers are promising some new stages and new locations along with some roads that have been used previously but in differing configurations.

Drivers will come from New Zealand, England, Australia, Scotland, Kenya and Ireland, with almost one third of the entries coming from overseas.

Strong turnout for marina run

By Adam Poulopoulos Over 200 people turned out in Picton on Saturday for the annual Marina 2 Marina run.

In total, 227 competitors participated over four categories, including the 13 kilometre Snout Run, the nine km run or walk and the two km kids’ dash.

Multisport star Jeremy McKenzie was first home in the 13km event in a time of 55 minutes and 55 seconds, while Annabelle Latz was the first woman home, running one hour, five minutes and 36 seconds.

The competitors completed their courses before a prizegiving was held at London Quay.

The Tasman Makos will play their ITM Cup final in New Plymouth this weekend after ensuring Canterbury won’t win their seventh tournament in a row.

Tasman won their semifinal 26-6 in Nelson on Saturday night.

They will play Taranaki, who beat Auckland 49-30 in the other semifinal.

The final kicks off at 7:35pm on Saturday night.

FOOTBALL The Nelson Marlborough Falcons made it three wins from three in the ASB Youth League, beating Auckland United 2-0 on Sunday in Nelson.

The league takes a break this weekend.

PRIZEGIVING Portia Barcello was the supreme winner at the Marlborough Girls’ College sports prizegiving last week.

A year 13 student, Barcello was awarded the Smokefree Cup as sportsperson of the year.

She plays a variety of sports to a high level, including rowing and athletics, but her year was highlighted by a call-up to the 2014 New Zealand Secondary Schools Maori Netball Team, which toured Australia.

Sprinter Lucy Sheat was awarded the College Sportsperson of the year, while the squash combination of Kiriana Andrew, Lydia Columbus, Libby Craighead, Kaylee Ford, Kate Roughan and Amelia Wadsworth won team of the year.

Pigeon results

By Alister Cooper The Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held its second race from Timaru on Saturday, and the birds were liberated at 7.45am into fine weather, but with high cloud and slight breezes.

However, the birds encountered adverse conditions en route home, with rain and strong winds in the Ashburton district, and as the day progressed so the weather worsened, with intermittent rain and gusty northeast winds adding another hurdle for the birds on their journey home.

Carl Kirkwood of Spring Creek recorded his chequer cock bird 172 arrival at his loft at just before 4pm, recording a velocity of 809.10 metres per minute, which was a very good time indeed in those conditions.

That was 38 minutes in advance of second place Alister Cooper of Renwick, whose blue hen 268 recorded a velocity of 748.77 mpm.

He was followed closely by Donald Morrison, also of Spring Creek, with a two-year old blue hen 196 gaining third with a time of 744.45 mpm.
