Church demolition auction Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk The 2013 Seddon earthquakes may have led to the demise of the St Andrew’s Presbyterian Church building in Seddon, but its memory will live on through a variety of memorabilia up for auction this Saturday, October 18.

St Andrew’s which first opened in 1956, was deemed ‘unfeasible to repair’ and was decommissioned in July following a heartfelt farewell service led by Rev Dawn Daunauda.

The church has since been demolished and a large majority of items from its interior and structure will be up for auction this Saturday.

Bride meets Sonny Bill

By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Fiona Lodewyk had an extra special day last Saturday when she celebrated her 50th birthday, got married and was photographed with former All Black player Sonny Bill Williams all on the same day.

Sonny Bill was taking a short swim with his Counties team mates when he crossed paths with the wedding party at a Blenheim hotel.

Fiona said Sonny was “a real gentleman”, and congratulated her and husband Les on their nuptials.

Quick-thinking staff save life A 38-year-old Masterton man is in a stable condition in Wellington Hospital after Outward Bound staff helped to restart his heart before help arrived.

The man was moving a small yacht up from the beach to a grassed area at Outward Bound, in Queen Charlotte Sound, when the mast struck live power lines, electrocuting him.

Initially the man was breathing before going into cardiac arrest.

Outward Bound staff applied a defibrillator and performed CPR to get the man’s heart beating again.

Chairperson of the management committee for the Awatere Christian Joint Venture, Rob Cameron said there will be a lot kept, including pews and most of the windows, but the rest is being sold to help raise money for their ‘building fund’.

“There are a lot of people in the community who have fond memories of St Andrew’s so this is a way for them to have some memorabilia.

“It also means that the church will always be part of our community,” he said.

There are 42 auction items listed including doors, flooring, gates, frames, beams and

other parts of the building, as well as furniture items such as a vintage projector, shelves, light shades, blinds and kitchen utensils.

There will be food and drink available during the auction which begins at 10:30am with an inspection, followed by the auctioning at 11:30am. Items will be displayed in the paddock adjacent to the church.

Money raised from the auction will go toward a ‘building fund’, but decisions as to how and where to rebuild the church are yet to be made, said Rob. Until such time, St Andrew’s large congregation will continue to share the Catholic church.

Helicopter wreckage and pilot’s body found

The wreckage of a helicopter missing in Kahurangi National Park, 35km west of Motueka, has been found, along with the body of former Blenheim man Damian Webster.

The wreckage was found within the search area identified from the Robinson 44 helicopter’s last known position on Friday afternoon.

The helicopter, piloted by Damian Webster, went missing on a flight from Karamea to Nelson on Tuesday morning.

There have been an outpouring of tributes for Damian from family and friends on Facebook.

The Rescue Coordination Centre New Zealand managed the search, which involved up to five helicopters and six ground search and rescue teams.

RCCNZ search and rescue coordinator John Ashby praised the efforts of the searchers, while acknowledging the pilot’s family and friends and their loss.

“This is obviously a very sad day for his loved ones and our thoughts are with them,” he said.

“This was an extremely challeng-

ing search, given the steep terrain and thick bush canopy, and it is a credit to the skills of the searchers that the wreckage has been found.

“Identifying a single piece of paper from the air is remarkable and that is what has led us to the crash site.”

Mr Ashby also praised police, who coordinated the land search.

Recovery of the pilot’s body was handled by police.

The Transport Accident Investigation Commission and the Civil Aviation Authority are both investigating the crash.

Firestarter’s identity a mystery

By Adam Poulopoulos Police are continuing enquiries into a fire started by the Taylor River last week.

A group of flax bushes at the end of Beaver Road were set alight just after 2:30pm last Thursday afternoon.

Two fire appliances and the police attended the blaze, which was extinguished shortly after.

Marlborough district fire fighter Lewis Jones said it was “very unlikely” the fire had started from a discarded cigarette butt.

“It’s one of those ones that is not clearly identifiable. There are no other telltale signs.”

Mr Jones said with the dead undergrowth and the wind, the blaze had travelled quickly.

Diane Lindsay-Stevens, who was walking along the river when the fire started, said it began quickly.

“Suddenly there was smoke, crackle, crackle, and then flames.

There was nobody around.

“It just seemed to go so fast. I thought ‘oh my God. There must be someone burning rubbish here.”

Ms Lindsay-Stevens went to a nearby property, and the homeowner called police.

Andy Wrighton, who walked past the fire site ten minutes previously and was near the Henry Street Bridge when it began, said the outcome could have been worse.

“It’s just luck it’s so green. If it had been a bit further down it could have ended up in the houses.”

MARINA EXPANSION Port Marlborough’s application for an expansion of the Waikawa Marina has been signed off by Waikawa Bay iwi Te Atiawa o te Waka-a-Maui and will now go before the Environment Court.

An official signing ceremony was held last Friday, signalling the end of ‘discussions’ between the two parties.

Last year Port Marlborough marinas operations manager Steve McKeown told the Sun by expanding into the north west and north east it would help meet the demand the marina was experiencing, and an additional 250 berths would ‘greatly benefit the marina’.

Slow Rehab for Hiku the Penguin Hiku the Penguin is making a slow recovery at EcoWorld’s Wildlife Recovery Centre in Picton.

The sick Little Blue was recently found at Whites Bay by a member of the public.

She was lethargic, had a swollen face, a bad gut infection, fleas and the usual ticks blocking her ears.

EcoWorld’s life sciences manager Regan Russell said the penguin, named Hiku by one of EcoWorld’s year pass holders, was pretty sick when she arrived.

“We’ve deloused her and put her on antibiotics to clear the gut infection and stabilise her. It looks like the gut infection has cleared.

“Hiku is eating well and she is putting on weight.

“She still has a swollen face and our next challenge is her eyesight. We have been applying eye drops but we think she may have limited eyesight.

Life is hard for Little Blues. They face the dangers from natural predators at sea and on land, but humans and their dogs and cats add to their daily struggle.

It’s now penguin breeding season, and this is the time of the year when they have unfortunate and sometimes fatal interactions with humans and their pets.

“We’re expecting more injured and sick penguins at this time of the year through to February. Sometimes they have been mauled by dogs or cats, run over by cars or hit by boats,” said Regan.

“People should be aware they are out there and they are vulnerable to human activities.”

Spring Festival great success

By Adam Poulopoulos The St Ninian’s Church Spring Festival was held over the weekend, raising about $4000 overall.

The festival, which was held on Saturday on a closed-off Riley Crescent, was raising money for the Wairau Youth and Family Trust, and their community children’s worker Robin Humphreys.

About a dozen stalls were set up altogether, including a mini food court and to sell arts and crafts.

Other children’s activities, including a bouncy castle, treasure hunt and face paint, were also available.

Wairau Youth and Family Trust fundraising committee member Trish Robertson said she was happy with how things went.

“We had a lovely day and the weather was brilliant. ”We’re very grateful to the community for assisting us and for gathering in their numbers.”

Bodybuilders win at national event Blenheim made its presence known at the 2014 NABBA/WFF Nationals for bodybuilding at the weekend, with locals Renee Craw and Brayden Green taking out podium finishes.

Renee won third place in the NABBA Novice Figure category, while Brayden placed second in the Junior Men. This was a huge thrill for the duo, especially for

Renee who has been training hard for the past 10 months to get to the nationals event.

She said there were nerves leading up to the day but winning was “a dream come true”.

“It was really exciting to be there and to win a placing. My next goal is to continue training and build my body for a competition next year,” she said.

By Adam Poulopoulos Two dog-crazy Marlburians have used the love they have for their pets to write a children’s book.

Tara McLaren, who teaches at Springlands School, and Mindy Chowdhury, a retail assistant at Mihi Merino, have co-written and produced ‘Laddie and Mac’s First Adventure,’ with Tara’s black Labrador Mac and Mindy’s cocker spaniel Laddie the stars of the show.

The book was made using photographs the women had taken of their dogs, and is about the pooches’ discovery of some buried treasure.

The pair, who have no previous published work, came up with the idea in September last year while taking the dogs for walks down the Taylor River.

“We took a lot of photos and laughed, and said ‘we could make a book out of it,” Tara said.

MAN RESISTS ARREST At 2.50pm on Monday a 52-yearold sickness beneficiary was arrested at a Picton address for an historic assault matter and resisting arrest. He will appear in the Blenheim District Court on Monday, October 20.

DRUNK DRIVER ARRESTED At 11.55pm on Monday a 47-yearold male labourer was arrested when he was stopped driving a motor vehicle and it was discovered he

Dear Ed, It’s the end of an era, but it feels like nobody’s really noticed! The City Hotel has been empty for a while but it’s a pretty amazing slice of history.

To see all of that come down in one day, and if those walls could talk…wow. It’s like losing an old friend – the amount of hours we spent in that bar…Marlborough’s certainly lost a pretty special building. It will be interesting to see what happens with the land now. Let’s hope the new building makes its own mark, but one thing’s for sure – we’ll never forget ‘The City.’

MS mission

A Marlborough woman’s five-year battle against multiple sclerosis has seen her embark on a fundraising drive, looking to raise the money needed to receive stem cell treatment in Russia.

Paula Davis spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about living with the disease, and her fundraising dinner on January 24.

It was October 2009 when Paula Davis’s life changed.

Experiencing partial blindness in her left eye, Paula saw two local eye specialists.

Following an MRI scan and lumbar puncture, she was diagnosed with MS. “I was actually smiling and laughing,” she said.

“I said to the doctor ‘if I don’t laugh now I’m going to cry, and I don’t want to.”

MS, which has no known cause or cure, occurs when the body’s immune system attacks nerve fibres in the brain, spinal cord and optic nerves.

The damage causes symptoms like fatigue, thinking problems and impaired vision.

The news came as a shock, especially for a woman who had such an active lifestyle.

Paula had been known to work out in the gym three times a day, had dabbled in bodybuilding and is a qualified chef and dementia carer.

Paula’s son Alex would help her with everything, from doing her shopping to opening bananas.

“He had to be with me if I went out,” she said.

“I’d worry about passing out, or losing my eyesight and not being able to get home.”

Paula has tried several medications, but the Pharmac-funded options have led to side effects, and a tablet she has yet to try costs $35,000 per annum.

Her worst experience came in 2012 with Betaferon, a drug designed to reduce the severity of an MS relapse.

Paula was regularly affected by other illnesses and would sleep for about 20 hours a day.

“It caused more problems, and seemed to exacerbate the existing ones,” she said.

“The Florence Nightingale Agency was helping me with cleaning, and I’d wake up, let the cleaner in, and fall asleep.

“I’d wake up when the vacuum came on, and then fall asleep again while it was

running.”

Currently, Paula is managing her symptoms through her diet and steady exercise.

Ironically, she is no longer eligible for MS drugs, as she hasn’t had two new relapses in the last 12 months.

With the disease under control but with seemingly no way forward, Paula was watching 60 Minutes six months ago when she was given hope.

The documentary featured Australian Kristy Cruise, who received successful MS stem cell transplant treatment in Russia.

“She was me – it was amazing to see her go from where she was to where she is now,” Paula said.

“I don’t want to wait until I’m really sick to have treatment here.”

The treatment sees bone marrow extracted from the patient before they undergo chemotherapy, and the marrow is reintroduced.

The immune system is essentially reset and stops attacking itself, and it is the closest scientists have come to finding a long-term Paula Davis’s fundraising drive is underway.

Paula has been accepted for treatment in 2016, and has since started fundraising.

She estimates trip costs to be $60,000, which covers her treatment, plus airfares, accommodation and food for herself and a support person.

So far she has raised about $1400 through her Givealittle page, ‘Paulas stem cell treatment fund,’ while a Facebook page ‘Paula’s stem cell treatment for MS,’ has also been set up.

A fundraising dinner for Paula is being held at Dolce on Saturday, January 24, 2015, with tickets available at Dolce and Just Jeans.

Paula said the treatment would let her get back to work and do things others took for granted.

“It’d give me my life back.”

Choosing a builder Choosing a reputable and reliable builder, this is a critical stage of the whole process. Finding a builder you can trust and you feel comfortable with is very important.

Choose more than one to tender for the job, this way you can see if the costs being presented are fair and realistic.

Family duo grabs medals, takes record

By Adam Poulopoulos It’s a job well done for a Blenheim father-son combination who rowed away from a recent meet with six gold medals and a national record.

Octogenarian Brian Hutchison and son Ross were part of the Blenheim Rowing Club contingent at the South Island Masters Indoor Rowing Championships in Timaru last weekend.

At a meet where everyone was on a rowing machine, Brian broke the national 80-plus age group 1000 metre record by nearly seven seconds, in a time of four minutes, sixteen seconds.

Brian also won the 500m and

100m in the same category.

His son, Ross, rowed in the strong 50-54 year old division.

He walked away with three gold medals, in the 2000m, 1000m and 500m, as well as silver in the 100m.

Brian said despite every machine in his record-setting race being connected to a monitor, he did not initially realise his achievement.

“I didn’t actually know the time straight away, but I was elated.

“If you break a record by one or two seconds it’s good, but I was really chuffed to break it by six seconds.”

Brian already holds the agegroup 100m record, which he

set last year.

He said he was a surprise to break this mark.

“You’re out there to win, but you never know your opposition until you get there.

“There are things you’re out to achieve, and you always do the best you can.”

Brian said he had been on a rowing machine every day for the last three months in preparation for the event, while Ross trains five or six times a week.

The meet was the fourth Brian and Ross had attended together.

Their next meet is the upcoming Marlborough outdoor rowing champs.

Accountants get hands dirty Last Friday, 17 TvA Chartered Accountants staff and their families swapped keyboards for shovels, rakes and wheelbarrows to gravel the northern end lookout, and parts of the 2.8km track leading around the Kaipupu Point Sounds Wildlife Sanctuary.

afternoon.

“The sanctuary is so completely removed from what we do on a daily basis, a piece of paradise at our back door.

“It’s so close to the port, but you wouldn’t know it’s there.”

The TvA offices were closed on Friday afternoon as a result.

Some of Marlborough’s best young footballers got to pit themselves against teams from around the South Island at the Renwick Domain last week.

The Gavin Roberts 12th Grade Football Tournament attracted 16 boys’ teams and 12 girls’ sides from around the South Island.

The Marlborough boys’ side finished 11th in their tournament, which was won by Otago Blue.

Benjamin Ivory-McCullum was one of his team’s standouts, winning the best goalkeeper award.

The Marlborough girls’ team qualified second from their five round-robin games, but were only allowed to play off for the final two spots because they were an invitational team with two extra players.

They ended up taking ninth spot overall.

Several other Marlborough teams were also in action in school tournaments around the South Island.

Squash Megan Craig is among the four players in the New Zealand Women’s squash team to contest the Women’s World Team Championships in Canada.

By Adam Poulopoulos The Tasman Makos’ hopes of finishing as the ITM Premiership’s top seed failed to come to fruition, as they were beaten by CountiesManukau at Lansdowne Park on Sunday.

The 21-16 loss in front of a crowd of 7100 saw Tasman finish second on the table.

A win would have seen Tasman top the table, after Taranaki lost to Canterbury earlier in

the day.

Tasman plays Canterbury in Nelson on Saturday night for a place in the final.

Tasman beat Canterbury 38-10 in their roundrobin game earlier this month.

Tasman looked to be heading to the top of the table when fullback Robbie Malneek’s long-range try saw them lead 16-7 with 25 minutes to play.
