By Adam Poulopoulos It was an important day for Marlborough’s police this week, as they remembered colleagues who had lost their lives on Police Remembrance Day. Police were joined by their families, members of the Marlborough RSA and Mayor Alistair Sowman at a ceremony at Clubs of Marlborough on Monday morning.

The roll of honour was read by senior constable Sue Bush and constable Alexander Thomson, while Mr Sowman and Royal New Zealand Air Force squadron leader Kelly Byrne laid wreaths, on behalf of the Marlborough community and the RNZAF respectively.

Mini eggs

By Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim man Ron Davis (pictured) was astounded when he found his Red Shaver chickens had started laying miniature sized eggs.

"First I thought a bird had got in and laid them, but the cage is pretty secure," he said.

For the past four days his chickens have been laying the tiny eggs, and when Ron broke one open he found it yolkless.

"I have lived on a farm all my life and never seen this before, so I thought Sun readers might have a few ideas of what causes this," he said.

The roll of honour listed the 29 officers to have been killed at work in New Zealand since records began in 1886, with constable Len Snee the most recent, killed during the Jan Molenaar standoff five years ago.

Marlborough Area commander, inspector Simon Feltham, paid tribute to those who had lost their lives.

“We remember those 29 men who made the ultimate sacrifice executing their oath of office.”

He said the link between the officers and the public was crucial for maintaining a well-run police force.

Later in the ceremony several local officers were awarded medals for their service.

Some at the service wore a huia feather, a symbol of remembrance.

Police Remembrance Day falls on September 29, the feast day of the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of police.

Marlborough Police are trying to locate a male believed to be on the run in Blenheim.

Jason Dav i d Wa r r e n , a 33-yea r-old European male, is wanted in connection with an assault with intent to injure, wilful damage, three counts of assault with a blunt instrument, and threatening behaviour.

All the offending occurred in the Marlborough area.

Anyone who sees him or with information about where he may be should contact police immediately.

Slow down – changes to speed limits now in effect

The Marlborough District Council is reminding motorists of the restricted speed limits in Blenheim’s CBD.

A reduced speed limit of 80km/h is now in place along New Renwick Road, from Aerodrome Road to the Fairhall cemetery.

Previously, the 80km/h speed applied only in the school zone around Fairhall School but this lower speed limit has now been extended from the cemetery to the edge of town.

In Renwick, the 50-km zone has been extended at two intersections; at Pak Lims Corner and around the Gee Street-Terrace Road intersection with the state highway.

At Grovetown the speed limit has been reduced to 70 kms on the roads leading down to the Grovetown

Lagoon and the Wairau Rowing Club, applying to Grantham Street and Steam Wharf Road and part of Elliot Street.

JAMBOREE IN MARLBOROUGH The Renwick Domain will be the venue for the next National Scouts Jamboree.

Lena becomes a citizen Yelena ‘Lena’ Milne said she was “very emotional” at receiving her citizenship from Mayor Alistair Sowman at a ceremony recently.

Lena, Ukrainian by birth, was one of 25 people to receive their citizenship at the ceremony on Friday, held at the Marlborough District Council chambers.

The new citizens recited the oath of citizenship, before being presented with their certificates.

Lena met husband Peter in Ukraine before moving to New Zealand on October 7, 2005.

They ran Euro Fashions in the Blenheim CBD until last year, and now do business out of their Pelorus Sound home.

Lena held off getting her citizenship earlier, but with circumstances changing in Ukraine she decided to take the plunge.

She said she was happy to be

She said the only downside was having to get a visa to go and see her mother back in Kiev.

Stay safe this summer A man who spent 75 hours treading water after being lost at sea is offering a training course for boaties at the Waikawa Marae later this month.

The course for recreational boaties is being held over one day and an evening next month by former navy diver Rob Hewitt, who is now a water safety crusader after his experience in 2006.

The Operation Christmas Child appeal got off to a great start last month with a huge number of people coming into the Sun office to collect a shoe box to fill.

Children of all ages have also been supportive, using the school holidays to put together their shoe boxes.

The deadline for bringing in the shoe boxes is October 17.

Shoe boxes can be collected and dropped off to the Sun by this date and should include something to wear, something

By Adam Poulopoulos Bus passengers will be waiting for their ride more comfortably at some stops around Blenheim after three new shelters were installed this week.

The shelters, which went up on Monday, are located outside Springlands Countdown, another on Coleman’s Road and at Ida Street, off Redwood Street.

The Countdown shelter was partly funded by a combination of the Blenheim Lions and the Beavertown Blenheim Lions clubs.

The two organisations held a book fair in August. Half the proceeds from the fair have gone toward the Springlands shelter, with the other half put toward the Blenheim Riverside Railway.

Growing up in Palmerston North, SGT Wilson always knew he wanted to be in the military.

For the past 15 years he has lived out every one of his childhood fantasies including five years in the New Zealand Army as a frontline infantryman, as a Firey in the RN-

ZAF and now as a helicopter crewman with 3 Squadron in Ohakea.

He also spent over two and a half years in East Timor in a variety of jobs including two tours as an infantryman, another in military intelligence and a month as a helicopter crewman in Papua New Guinea.

The three new shelters takes the number on the Blenheim bus route to 12.

The first one built was the shelter located by Wairau Hospital.

House valuations out The results of the three-yearly revaluation of all properties within the Marlborough District will be available this month.

The re-valuation is conducted for the Council by Quotable Value Limited – the country’s largest independent valuation and property information company.

Quotable Value will post out the new valuations to property owners from 24 September.

A Council information sheet will be included. The new property valuations are effective from 1 July 2014.

The District Valuation Rolls with the

new values will be available for public inspection at the Council offices, in both Blenheim and Picton, from 25 September to 31 October.

The Rolls will show both the old valuations, the new Land and Capital Values and the valuation movements for every property.

Valuers from Quotable Value Limited will be available to discuss any valuation issues, at the Council offices, Seymour Street, Blenheim, on Monday 13 October between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm.

It is not necessary to make an appointment.

The new valuations will be used to help determine rates for the 2015-16 rating year, beginning 1 July 2015, and the two years after that.

It should be noted that the revaluation does not increase the Council’s rates revenue; it may have the effect of redistributing how a part of the rates revenue is collected from individual ratepayers.

New property valuations are expected to be available on the Council website www. marlborough.govt.nz on 1 October.

Changing lives Probation officers protect the community and reduce re-offending by bringing about positive change in offenders’ lives.

Blenheim based probation officer Tressa Gatehouse explains to reporter Celeste Lodewyk why she finds her work so rewarding.

Walking into Blenheim’s Community Corrections centre I am immediately greeted with smiles and friendly banter, showing the enjoyment the staff have for their work.

Tressa enforces this by explaining what attracted her to her role.

“It’s working with people to help them turn their lives around, and when I see an offender making positive changes I can’t help but love my job,” she smiles.

Tressa has been with the department for nearly eight years, before that she was working in animal science.

“Being a probation officer is definitely different to animal science,” she laughs.

“But I am the kind of person who thrives on people contact and daily challenges, and my role certainly delivers that.

“When I first applied for the job I admit it was rather overwhelming considering I had no experience working with offenders, but the ongoing training that was available prepared me and the team here supported me the entire way,” she says.

Tressa is an experienced probation officer which sees her work with a wide range of offenders, from drink drivers through to life parolees and sex offenders.

A typical day could see Tressa dealing with up to 20 offenders, whether it be telephoning them, in person, through lawyers, or the courts phoning her.

“We also lay our own prosecutions, so if an offender has not followed special conditions placed on them by the parole board, we breach them.

As a probation officer she manages the rehabilitation sentences as opposed to running the community work programme.

“For example, if someone has been convicted for drink driving, they may be ordered to undergo alcohol counselling so it’s my job to make sure they attend.

“Also, for people who have been in

prison a long time the Parole Board often places a lot of conditions on them.

Probation officers ensure they complete successfully what the board has asked for,” she says.

Asked if she finds it difficult working with the more ‘intimidating’ offenders, she shakes her head and smiles.

“I enjoy working with the gang members, it’s a side of life I have never been involved with so to assist them to change is a challenge.

“I also work with high risk offenders who have more complex needs.

“The most important thing is that you don’t judge people, that you treat offenders as human beings and believe they can change,” she says.

Apart from improving the public’s understanding of the work of staff, Corrections wishes to encourage people to think about working as a probation officer, a very challenging and rewarding career choice.

“Being a Probation Officer is not an easy job” says Southern Region Operations Manager Glenn Morrison. “But it is often incredibly satisfying.”

Community Corrections staff work with offenders to identify relevant rehabilitation, education and life skills training and support to help the offender remain crime free, and develop strategies to avoid further offending.

Public safety is Corrections number one priority and staff are very aware that they have an enormous responsibility to keep the public safe, something they take very seriously.

Corrections are looking for people with life experience who want to make a difference in the lives of individuals and for the community.

Keep learning Mental Health Awa reness Week (MHAW) is next week, and the Mental Health Foundation (MHF) is encouraging New Zealanders to Keep Learning – be curious, embrace new experiences, and see opportunities.

KEEP LEARNING, one of the Five Ways to Wellbeing, is the official theme for MHAW 2014.

“Learning is fun! Find something that you’ll enjoy and learn more about it.

"Be brave and do something you haven’t done before, learn to play a guitar, or to draw, to ride a bike!

“Learn new things, keep the brain active – you’ll get more out of life and protect yourself from depression and dementia.”

A mental illness is a medical condition that disrupts a person's thinking, feeling, mood, ability to relate to others and daily functioning.

Just as diabetes is a disorder of the pancreas, mental illnesses are medical conditions that often result in a diminished capacity for coping with the ordinary demands of life.

Serious mental illnesses include major depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic disorder, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and borderline personality disorder.

The good news about mental illness is that recovery is possible.

Mental illnesses can affect persons of any age, race, religion or income.

It is not the result of personal weakness, lack of character or poor upbringing.

Mental illnesses are treatable and most people diagnosed with a serious mental illness can experience relief from their symptoms by actively participating in an individual treatment plan.

Jenny Barr Gardens make homes and businesses look more beautiful and inviting whether it’s a flower bed, fruit trees or carefully landscaped lawn area.

Jenny Barr of Sunshine Gardening has made it her business to take care of all gardens, big and small so that their owners can enjoy them without the hassle of doing it themselves.

“It gives me great pleasure bringing a garden back to life. But ultimately I am

passionate about providing a great service for people,” she says.

Sunshine Gardening is new to Blenheim, covering the whole of the Marlborough region and is solely operated by Jenny. Gardening has played a big part in Jenny’s life, including working for Nelmac in Nelson as well as being the head gardener at Nelson’s largest and newest resthome.

Deciding on a lifestyle change Jenny returned

Connie Boyd What began as a part time after school job has become a career for local girl Connie Boyd.

Connie is one of seven glaziers at Norm Fowke Glass where she has worked for the past five years.

Her father, Gary Boyd, is a shareholder and manages the business and is someone she draws a lot of experience from.

“I first came in doing odd jobs and overtime I have

learned a lot from dad and the other glaziers.

“The main reason I enjoy my job so much is the variety. I have people come in off the street with unique projects that I work on, one being a wine rack made completely from glass.

“Another reason would be the team I work with, they are loads of fun,” she says.

Connie specialises in glass cutting, designing and making glass objects such as

fish tanks and glass cases, as well as fitting glass into window frames.

“I can be working on a variety of things from glass tabletops and cabinets through to mirrors and oneoff designs for customers,” she says.

Pink for breast cancer Story and photo

by Celeste Lodewyk Avon representatives Lisa Taylor and Sandra van Toor hit the streets in Blenheim yesterday wearing bright pink wigs to spread an important message.

October is breast cancer awareness month and because Avon is the largest corporate sponsor of breast cancer research, there will be fundraising merchandise being sold at various locations.

“The response we have had to our outfits today has been amazing. People are certainly noticing us, and others have stopped us in the street to ask what we are doing which is the response we are wanting,” Lisa laughed.

“Avon Australia and New Zealand is planning to hand over a $1million cheque for breast cancer research so here in Marlborough I am hoping to help raise as much as I can to go towards that,” she said.

Lisa who is the district sales ma nager for Nelson a nd Marlborough, will have a number of pop up stalls selling breast cancer fundraising earrings and pens located at Mega Marlborough Mitre 10, PAK’n SAVE, Springlands Cafe and throughout Blenheim CBD during the month of October.

by Celeste Lodewyk The Riverlands Street Sprint was held on Sunday with around 30 drivers competing for the fastest times.

The event was held by the Marlborough Car Club and had drivers from Christchurch, Ashburton and Nelson attending.

Taking out the overall winning prize was local driver Neil Webb in his Mitsubishi Mirage, as well as winning his class.

This was an exciting win for Neil who had taken the previous two years off and built a new car.

The next major event on the Marlborough Car Club's calendar is

the Fairweathers Marlborough Rally on November 8 which has six stages, beginning at Port Underwood and finishing at Taylor Pass.

This rally is part of the EPAY Silver Fern Rally which will see 60 classic cars from all over the world converge in Picton before driving the length of the South Island.

The Marlborough Boys’ College smallbore rifle shooting team is on a roll, winning two national titles in the space of a month.

Last weekend the team travelled to Rangiora to contest the TSNZ Inter-Secondary Schools competition, attended by 14 school teams from around the country.

With Josh Leach top scoring the match on 296.19, William van Asch posting the third-best score of 295.18, and Hamish Chapman supporting with 287.9, including a personal best 100.5, Marlborough were in a different class to the other schools, their score of 878.46 an impressive 18 points ahead of second placed King’s High School from Dunedin.

All three boys were selected for the South Island team, which easily defeated the North Island, 1925.72 to 1884.65. Josh Leach with 198.12 top scored again, giving him the trophy for the individual aggregate over the two matches, while William van Asch was runner up in the individual aggregate.

Based on their performances in

the first two matches, the three was 3rd top scorer with 195.12.

Marlborough marksmen were Marlborough Girls Colthen selected in a New Zealand lege also competed in Secondary Schools team which the Rangiora match, shot targets for a postal match finishing 12th. against Great Britain on Sunday.

The results of this match will not be known for some time, as the British team will shoot their targets in the next few months, during the northern hemisphere winter.

This performance by the Marlborough Boys’ College team followed a win in the TSNZ postal match which was shot in August, with the results just released this we ek. I n t hat match the team scored 579.29, just ahead of Kings College on 575.17.

Pigeon results

By Alister Cooper Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club held its second of four races from Christchurch on Saturday.

The birds were liberated at 7am into clear skies and cleared the liberation point along with other pigeons from North Island clubs at a pretty fair clip.

Club president Carl Kirkwood's blue cock bird 172 flew the 240 kilometres in three hours 26 minutes, recording a velocity of 1175.07 meters per minute for first place.

Second place to the very consistent Shirley Morrison, also of Spring Creek, with her blue hen 165 achiev-

ing a speed of 1158.22 mpm, and the Two Fishers p/ship's bird #4336 was close behind with a velocity of 1154.22 mpm for third position.

All members of the club had good returns thanks to the good efforts of the liberator in getting the birds up early in good weather.

Harriers are asking for help at the Marlborough Sun Run, on Saturday, November 22, and the Marlborough Women’s Duathlon, on Sunday, November 30.

Gold by the dozen The Blenheim Rowing Club masters team (pictured) experienced a gold rush at the recent New Zealand Masters Rowing Championships.

The club won 12 gold medals, and 22 in total, at the event held at Lake Karapiro late last month.

The 17-strong rowing team contested 30 events, and the first-year rowers won all the novice events.

Coach Kevin ‘Mouse’ Taylor said it was an outstanding achievement.

“This was an amazing result for the club and culminates another very successful season for the masters contingent, proving they are one of the top masters clubs in the country.”

The club finished unofficially with the most points at the regatta, while the Blenheim rowers were selected to compete for the South Island

against the North Island later in the meet.

Taylor said the result was one of the best in the club’s history, and put it down to the club’s culture, and the effort put in on and off the water.

A total of 340 rowers attended the event, aged from 27 to 82.

They contested 86 events and 126 races over the two-day event.

The Nelson Marlborough Falcons begin their season with a game in Nelson this weekend.

They play Heartland Wairarapa at Trafalgar Park on Sunday, with kickoff at 2pm.

The Falcons were runners-up in the ASB Youth League last season.

Winger Nick Kelly is the only Blenheim-based player in this year’s squad. Carl Connor-McLean has also made the team, but has relocated to Nelson.

Slick Magnum win yet another title Marlborough Volleyball’s FairWeathers’ Senior Winter League Finals were played at Stadium 2000 last Thursday evening.

Magnum, who had dropped just two sets through round-robin play, met Uso 4 Life in the premier grade final. Uso 4 Life had earned their spot in the final with a team made up of five seasonal workers who returned home the week before, leaving captain Tom Oliver to round up four ring-ins.

Magnum started off strong in the first set. The crowd watching the final saw some good rallies in the first set but Magnum’s excellent serving and well drilled court play saw them take a convincing lead and won the set 25-10. Set two was much more respectable for Uso with more cohesive play which led to some excellent rallies with great play from Magnum’s Kyle Heagney helping his side to take the set 25-20. Even

though Magnum had it in the bag it was still a tight third set with some huge hits from Magnum’s Tarik Tekin and captain Nigel Sowman. Oliver played well at the net setting up some good hits for Uso but Magnum were too well disciplined and won the set 25-19 to once again claim the winner’s crown.

In the C Grade Final, The A-Team finally gained a title, beating The Avengers two sets

to one, and also for their efforts were selected FairWeathers’ Fair Play Team of the Week.

Fijian Warriors and Indevin Thunderballs played off for top honours in Social Grade, with the Fijians coming out on top 3-0.

Tomorrow the FairWeathers’ Competition winds up the season with the Triples Tournament, where teams of three take to smaller courts playing sevenminute games.
