Priest pleads guilty Father Aidan Kay

By Adam Poulopoulos A Blenheim-based priest has pleaded guilty to a charge of indecent assault.

Father Aidan Kay, 71, formerly of St Mary’s Catholic Church, appeared for the first time in the Blenheim District Court yesterday.

The appearance concerns an incident that happened in July.

Judge Peter Hobbs remanded Kay on

bail, and he is due to reappear in court on October 20.

Defence lawyer Rob Harrison asked no conviction be entered.

On Kay’s October 20 appearance restorative justice, a process which requires offenders to meet their victims and address the harm they have caused, will be considered.

A restorative justice conference can

only be considered if both parties agree to it.

The victim, who is over 16 years of age, has name suppression.

Judge Hobbs said Kay was not to have contact with the victim unless it was to do with the restorative justice process.

Kay has been relieved of his duties at St Mary’s, the parish he joined in January 2013.

By Adam Poulopoulos This Friday marks Suffrage Day, the 121st anniversary of one of New Zealand’s most significant events, when women were the first in the world to gain the right to vote.

Celebrating this event a lunchtime rally will be held at the Forum, in Blenheim and Marlborough women and men are invited to attend.

Several local women will be speaking to the rally about what the right to vote means to them.

Thelma Sowman, businesswoman and Marlborough’s mayoress will address the rally on how women have also won the right to play a part in business life, while Marlborough District councillor Laressa Shenfield talks about the importance of women using their vote at local body elections.

Janette Walker, who is the only female candidate standing in the Kaikoura electorate, will talk about exercising that right to vote, and from a youth point of view, Marlborough Girls’ College student Rosie Argyle will also be speaking.

Janette said it was important the public respected their democratic right.

“People fought for the right to vote

regardless of gender and that should be respected. People have a responsibility to exercise their right to vote.”

Those attending the rally are also asked to wear white camellias, at the rotunda.

The flowers will be handed out by members of the Zonta Club of Marlborough.

The rally will be celebrating more than just the women’s vote, but also serving as a reminder to head to the polling booths for the general election on Saturday.

“We just want to encourage people to vote and get out there,” Thelma said.

For Rosie, who is also a part of the Marlborough Youth Council, the aim is to get young people out and vote, while Laressa said she hoped the vote would reflect the diversity of the population.

The rally commences at 12noon and will run until 1pm.

It will include the speeches, and live entertainment from Pam Nichols Suffrage Singers performing ‘Bread and Roses’, then ‘This land is your land’.

Coastguard open day Coastguard Marlborough opened its boat and facilities to visitors in Picton to raise awareness for the organisation.

About 180 visitors, including the Blenheim Girls’ Brigade, went through the doors on the day.

Active committee member Bo Baines said Coastguard was happy with the turnout.

“It was to give people an opportunity to show how Marlborough’s Coastguard works, which is different to many others. For

example, Auckland has a fully manned centre.

“We had quite a few visitors from Blenheim which was great to see.”

St John members and Aaron Blackmore from Oddie’s Marine also attended.

Ms Baines said it was likely Coastguard would hold the event on an annual basis.

Locals return and buy properties

Kay Waters and Ron Vanstone (pictured) have bought the land and buildings where the Woodbourne Tavern and Motels sit, on High Street in Renwick.

They will not be running the businesses located in these premises.

Both grew up in Marlborough, Kay in Blenheim and Ron in the Waihopai Valley.

INJURED IN RENWICK ACCIDENT An ambulance was called to attend an accident in Havelock Street, Renwick yesterday morning involving two cars.

A female in her early 20’s from one of the cars was taken to Wairau Hospital with minor leg injuries, while the other car’s occupant escaped injury.

SEYMOUR SQUARE SERVICE A memorial service will be held at the Blenheim War Memorial clock tower at 11am on Sunday to mark Battle of Britain Day.

Pinned by tree A 36-year-old Blenheim man had to be airlifted by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue helicopter after a forestry accident in an area near Tua Marina on Monday.

The helicopter was despatched around 2pm for the forestry worker who had become pinned under a fallen tree.

Due to the steep terrain the helicopter Intensive Care Paramedic was winched into

the scene, where he treated and stabilised the man before he was winched out in a stretcher.

The man was flown to Nelson Hospital Emergency Department with pelvic and back injuries for further treatments.

A hospital spokesperson said the man was in a stable condition in Nelson Hospital’s ICU.

Rita Collet-Jacobson and Rick Edmonds were both rewarded for their effort in Havelock – Rita for nearly three decades with the Havelock Museum, and Rick for his push to reinstate the Link Pathway, the track connecting Havelock and Picton.

Rick is also an artist and amateur playwright.

Celebrations for 20 year milestone

By Adam Poulopoulos Ashwood Park Retirement Village residents got a surprise on Friday when it’s new garden was unveiled.

The garden was created to mark Ashwood Park’s 20th birthday, and to remember those lost in wartime.

The ceremony was attended by residents, along with a variety of local figures including Mayor Alistair Sowman, National Party Kaikoura candidate Stuart Smith and members of the RSA.

Residents were unaware plans for the garden were in the pipeline.

Ashwood Park co-owner Ross Bisset said he was delighted the village had reached the two-decade mark.

“It’s a pretty great achievement in today’s world to get to 20 years old.

“It’s the residents’ home, and that’s been the only constant for that time.”

Residents continued to celebrate with a 1920’s-themed cocktail party later in the day.

Operation Christmas Child Operation Christmas Child is now in full swing for Marlborough and donations are now being accepted.

I got my dress from my auntie so it didn’t cost anything. I haven’t got my shoes yet - I’m not really organised. My ride will cost $5.

I suppose it’s more ‘what is my mum going to spend!’

My dress is about $150, then you’ve got to get a spray tan, make up, hair and nails done. I’m using the same shoes as last year, so that’s cost-effective.

I’ve probably spent $400.

I bought my first dress, which was $49, but I decided I didn’t like it, so I bought another one for $72. My shoes were $80, and then there’s spray tan, hair, nails and makeup.

It’s about $200 for a suit, $92 for a ticket and about $70 for shoes.

That’s about it.

There’s the ticket, the after-function, which is $25, and the suit, which is $200. The ride to the venue is costing $10.

My suit was $140, the dress shoes were $100, and $90 for the ticket. Some of us are hiring a bus to the venue, and paying $5 each.

CYFS returns to Porse House Blenheim’s Child Youth and Family Service moves back into its old Porse House home, on the corner of Market and Alfred Street, this week.

They moved to the Blenheim Community Link premises in July last year, with Porse House being earthquake-strengthened.

They are due to move back this weekend.

Last Friday morning part of Market Street was shut for two hours as two cranes completed further strengthening work on Porse House.

Kiwi designer takes on the world From Kiwi budget shoe maker to International fashion footwear designer is no mean feet.

But Cushla Reed has done just that!

Her fabulous, fun, fashion, Minx range is sold throughout New Zealand, Australia and Canada and now at Cresswell’s Shoes in Blenheim where her original “Cee Cee” shoes (made across the water in Waikanae) were sold those many years ago.

Full Circle? No, just another destination on her journey round the world.

“The Minx name and footwear range reflect Cushla’s fabulous personality. It is key to the success of her range and just right for all our friendly, bubbly, fun loving Marlborough girls” says Keith Sandford of Cresswell’s Shoes.

Behind the brand: Cushla Reed and Minx First, let’s start with the big, important questions... how many pairs of shoes do you own?!

I really don’t know, but its got to be 100’s……  Describe your journey to becoming a shoe designer with your own label?

I’d always had an interest and a flair for colour…that’s really how the whole Minx thing got started. As a woman I felt that there were so many male designers already, and I wanted to add a feminine touch to shoes…after all, its women that are buying and wear them!

Can you remember and describe the first shoe/range you ever designed?

Before Minx began I saw a gap in the school shoe market, so designed a Doc Marten type shoe!!! But I vividly remember the first Minx collection as it was all about flowers, bright colours and soft weekends shoes…all this in an era that was saturated with black, black, black…

Is there a common misconception about your work or job? Now’s your chance to set things straight!

That designing shoes is a full time job, when running a business is actually the full-time job. Designing is obviously the most important and favourite part, but without a solid business chugging along beside you, it would never work!

Describe your office or where you do most of your work.

White and light… It resembles a New York style loft warehouse.

How many people work for you and what are their roles?

My immediate team are made up of 3 enthusiastic, passionate, shoe-loving, champagnesipping women, but a large part of my staff are contracted out…including agents, a sales team and a logistics group…as well as my 7 fair trading factories.

Take us through the process of creating a season’s range, from inspiration to arriving at a retail store many months later?

Inspiration is gathered throughout the year from varying sources. Sometimes it’s as simple as watching the pavement, listening to your own intuition, customer feedback or observing global direction. These ideas are then translated into design segments within a collection… and from here we flesh out each segment into concept drawings. After annotating these concepts I personally travel overseas 4 times a year to hand-select materials, buckles & embellishments before sample production starts. 6-8 weeks later samples begin to arrive, sometimes the most exciting and at the same time disappointing experience. These are then photographed, catalogued, priced and prepared for our selling agents to launch. Selling takes approx. 8 weeks, then it’s the heartbreaking process of crunching numbers. Sadly roughly 10% of the collection is eliminated though retailer selection. Then it’s production, which takes

3-4 months.

Concept to market takes 11 months, which means we are always wo r k i n g 12 months ahead of the season.

Any interesting places you’ve been or things you’ve seen that have inspired a particular Minx shoe?

On a recent trip to Italy I was fortunate enough to visit an extremely high end bespoke footwear manufacturer, located in a remote country village, surrounded by round straw bales, chickens and very handsome Italian men!!! The handmade nature of their collections has inspired a lot of my attention to detail this season. For example, hand waxed leather finishes, aesthetic cross-stitching and rustic weave.

What is the hardest thing about designing shoes?

Factory and material limitations.

You always have to work many months in advance so how do you know what will be in fashion?

Although we work 12 months in advance and are conscious of design trends, we pride ourselves in the fact that Minx has a unique style of its own, which is what our customers are drawn to each season.

How would you describe the typical Minx shoe?

Fun. Feminine. Individual. We love spots & stripes, and fun colour combinations like red and pink.

And the typical woman who wears a Minx shoe?

She is an individual. Confident, outgoing and loyal.

Do you sell Minx overseas?

Minx is sold all over Australia and more recently in Canada. And now we are in Blenheim.

Wonderful!

What are your loves and hobbies outside of work?

Painting. Walking. And my local farmers market every Saturday morning.

Who is your hero and why?

Coco Chanel, for her sense of contrasts and daring before her time.

What is your favourite: movie? Under The Tuscan Sun colour? Red food?

Yes, Abbey just turned 2 and Scarlett 6yrs Do you have any pets?

I live on a lifestyle block where I am entertained by our 8 laying hens, Powder & Puff, our two sheep, and “The Murrays” – 4 Murray grey cows.

Colin and Jenny Francis welcome you, the public, to attend their open day to officially open their new premises on Sutherland Terrace, Blenheim.

It will be held this Saturday (September 20) from 9am to 2pm and will give people the chance to get up close to the Accessman equipment and to meet the staff.

The new purpose built building has a large workshop and yard area, as well as an easy access drive-through which the public can take a tour of on the day.

“We will be giving demonstrations with some of the machines,” Colin said.

Yard manager Peter Cohen will also be on hand to talk to anyone wanting to know more about the machines.

On display will be a selection of Accessman’s 37 fleet including Scissor Lifts, Cherrypickers and Knuckle Booms ranging from 6m to 17m.

“We welcome anyone to come along to meet us, have a chat and look around our new premises,” Jenny said.

There will be a free sausage sizzle on the day.

Grand Opening

Accessman, specialist leaders in their field Accessman first came to Marlborough 10 years ago, bringing with it a fleet of hire lifts from New Zealand's leading specialist hire company.

The business has been owned

by Colin and Jenny Francis since 2008 and, since purchasing the business, have continued to expand and diversify with a huge range of hire lift machines.

Today they have 37 in their fleet which service from Kaikoura right through to Rai Valley.

Two months ago Colin and Jenny moved their operations from Main Street into a larger premises on Sutherland Terrace.

This building was purpose built to allow Accessman room to further expand as they continue to add to their fleet.

"We are excited about the prospect of further expansion now that we have the space," Jenny said.

The extended fleet now boasts of having four Knuckle Booms with reaches of 12 – 17metres and an outreach of up to 9.2m.

These machines compliment their existing range of Scissor Lifts, Cherrypickers.

Each machine is designed for different terrains and conditions, therefore Accessman provides a free, no obligation site inspection

in order to ensure the right equipment for the job.

Golden oldies rugby festival

By Adam Poulopoulos Fifteen teams meet in Blenheim this weekend for the Top of the South Island (TOPSI) golden oldies rugby festival.

The festival is at Lansdowne Park on Saturday, beginning at 11am.

Four Marlborough teams will be competing. Moutere, Renwick and Waitohi are

all sending teams, while the Marlborough Vintage Musseleers are hosting the event.

The other teams are coming in from Wellington, Christchurch, Reefton and Nelson, with about 200 people attending overall.

Musseleers representative Paul Dobson said the tournament would fit in with the golden oldies motto of ‘fun, friendship, fraternity.’

“It’s all about having fun on the day. We are hoping for a bit of rain between now and Saturday though – it’s bloody hard down there at the moment.”

Dobson said anyone who wanted to have a run could turn up on the day.

“It’s pretty social. A couple of teams are a bit short. It’s mix-and-match really.”

PIGEON RACING Blenheim Racing Pigeon Club cancelled it's normal Saturday's racing in favour of better weather conditions on Sunday.

The birds certainly responded with a very fast fly from the Cheviot.

Released at 11am the winning bird No.354 owned by club president Carl Kirkwood of Spring Creek, covered the 161 km in 1hr 52 mins flying at the rate of 1435.25 metres per minute.

Shirley Morrison also had a very creditable second place with her chequer hen 171 achieving 1432.74 mpm and husband Donald taking third position with his pied hen No.140 with a velocity of 1379.48 mpm. Next weeks race point is Christchurch,the birds are quickly gaining race fitness so they can handle increased distances.

The tournament acts as a fundraiser for several organisations, including St John and Central JAB rugby.

Those gathered will have a Saturday night meal at Clubs of Marlborough, along with a champagne breakfast the next day.

Spot prizes are also up for grabs.

Bright spark The Blenheim Gymnastics club is one of two Marlborough sporting organisations taking part in the LiteClub programme.

The scheme encourages clubs to be more efficient with electricity, water and waste.

Both Blenheim Gym Club and Wairau Rowing Club get the onceover this week, with energy-efficient light bulbs, hot water cylinder wraps, pipe insulation, water-saving devices and waste minimisation systems all going in.

It is the first time the scheme has moved into the South Island. It is estimated 413 clubs around the country have saved a combined $2.5 million through the arrangement already.
