Gold Star for chief Fireman to receive honour

By Adam Poulopoulos A quarter of a century after becoming a firefighter because he wanted a go on the truck, Keiron Hebberd will get recognised for his service.

The chief firefighter at the Seddon Volunteer Fire Brigade is being awarded a Gold Star at a ceremony at the Awatere rugby clubrooms on September 20.

Keiron is the first Seddon firefighter since 1991 to be recognised for 25 years’ service, and the fifth since 1958.

Born-and-bred in Seddon, Keiron joined the brigade at 19, when it was still operating out of the old Seddon Community Hall.

He said he would not have imagined making it to 25 years.

Fighting fires for 25 years Continued from page 1 “I just wanted to help out. I heard the call about them being short.

“All I wanted to do was get on the truck, like most new people.”

Keiron made rapid progress through the ranks, and in 1996 he was made chief.

“That was one helluva learning curve,” he said.

“Everyone’s got their own jobs, but when you’re a fireman you do it, and when you’re an officer you tell other people to do it.”

He remembers the Boxing Day fires, when the crew was already stretched with a 5000 hectare fire in Ward, as one of the most significant events he’s attended.

He said he still had “a few things to set up” at the station, but in the near future he hopes to spend more time with his family, after 25 years of random callouts and Monday night meetings.

“They’re the ones who probably deserve the award the most.

They’re the backbone of these volunteer organisations.

by Celeste Lodewyk Marlborough District Councillor Cynthia Brooks is excited about the availability of a community recycling bin which is currently located in Renwick.

The council kicked off the trial which began in May which saw the bin being trialled at a number of rural schools including Tua Marina, Spring Creek, Grovetown, Rapaura School and now Renwick.

These are areas that do not have access to recycling collection services.

The trial began in May and will finish in Renwick at the end of September, so residents are being encouraged to make good use of it.

"I would really love to see

Renwick residents use this while it's here, as long as they don't abuse it by putting in the wrong materials," Cynthia said.

Cynthia had saved up a number of glass bottles and was using the bin for the first time on Wednesday.

"I will definitely be a regular.

I have seen plenty of Renwick residents using the Resource Recovery Centre, but something like this would mean less trips into town and it would help to extend the life of landfills," she said.

The bin takes up to 12 cubic metres of material including cans, plastic and glass bottles and is currently located in the Renwick Community Memorial Hall carpark beside the school.

Youth knocked off scooter A 17-year-old male was knocked off his motor scooter Wednesday night around 8pm on the corner of Maxwell Road and Howick Road.

The patient was treated at the scene by an intensive care Paramedic before been transported via ambulance to Wairau Hospital with an ankle injury.

Drug raid accused in court Tuesday's drug raid by Police in Blenheim and Picton resulted in 10 adults and one youth appearing in court on Wednesday facing close to 100 drug related charges.

The seven men and four women were charged with possession and supply of class A, B and C drugs including cannabis, cannabis oil, methamphetamine as well as stolen property.

Ten of the accused remain in custody to reapper in court next Tuesday, while another will reappear today on a lesser charge.

OfficeMax representatives and some of her former students visited her classroom with a very special certificate and box of goodies.

Trish, who has been teaching at the school for six years, was selected out of 15 teachers nationwide and rewarded for her passion and enthusiasm, and for continually inspiring her students.

The programme was titled 'A Day Made Better' that recoginises

teachers who go above and beyond the call of duty in their classrooms.

Trish was nominated by an anonymous member of staff.

"Trish is incredibly caring and has a special rapport with her students, she goes above and beyond to support them and their families," principal Helen Williams said.

Three of Trish's former students were also present and commented on how memorable she was as a teacher.

"She made learning fun and it was the best class I have been in," Alistair Gifford said.

Two children were airlifted from the Rainbow Ski Field by the Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Tuesday afternoon.

A 10-year-old boy was flown to Wairau Hospital with minor back injuries after falling on a downhill run, while a 15-year-old female suffered back and head injuries but was flown to Nelson Hospital.

Both were assessed and initally treated by the helicopter Intensive Care Paramedic before being stabilised for their flights.

They are both in stable conditions.

Locals return and buy tavern

By Adam Poulopoulos A couple returning from 24 years overseas has bought into the local market.

Kay Waters and Ron Vanstone (pictured) have bought the land where the Woodbourne Tavern and Motels sit, on High Street in Renwick.

Both grew up in Marlborough, Kay in Blenheim and Ron in the Waihopai Valley.

In fact, Kay worked part-time at the Tavern before she left, trying to save money for a home loan, while Ron worked in maintenance for Safe Air. They have been in Melbourne for the majority of the last 24 years, with Ron working at Avalon Airport for Qantas.

Ron said when Qantas slashed jobs earlier this year, the pair returned to Blenheim for a quieter life.

“We’ve come back for the fishing, the sun and the grapes.”

The Woodbourne Tavern in Renwick

The pair takes over the land at the end of October, and hope to give the tavern a new paint job.

Managers Rowan and Stacey Ingpen will continue to run the tavern.

COUNCIL NEWS Notices Water Supply Shutdown – Renwick 15-16 September The Marlborough District Council wishes to advise residents in Renwick that the water will be shut down

from: 11.00 pm Monday 15 Sept until: 5.00 am Tuesday 16 Sept

Residents are advised to store water prior to the shutdown for use during the period when water is not available.

This shutdown will enable the replacement of the treatment plant discharge pipe and flow control equipment upgrade.

When water is restored all efforts to remove air from the system will be taken. Customers may find that they have to bleed their property pipework. Running a couple of taps slowly will achieve this.

Council apologises for any inconvenience that this may cause, and advises that the supply may be resumed at any time between these hours without further notice.

Taylor River planting day Four Blenheim primary Enviro School groups joined Council staff and contractors and Marlborough Landscape Group volunteers to continue the good work on the Taylor River Project – enhancing the popular recreation area established along the floodway reserve.

Pupils from Whitney Street, Redwoodtown, Mayfield and Springlands schools worked hard to get 900 plants into the ground along the river’s edge – all local species.

It’s hoped the September planting day with our schools and community

supporters will become a regular annual event.

Special guest this year was Margaret Peace, Marlborough’s environmental champion who has long campaigned to reintroduce areas of lost native vegetation and wildlife habitat.

Meanwhile work is continuing on a planting plan to establish an arboretum along the Taylor River as proposed

by Marlborough horticulturalist, 98-yearold Ralph Ballinger. It’s anticipated that this plan will be ready by the end of next month.

Looking for volunteers to advise us on recycling We’re looking for input from the community as we update our Waste Management and Minimisation Plan.

At the heart of this plan is our wish to do more to reduce waste, and recycle and re-use more - and cut the amount going into our landfill.

Applications to the Commercial Events Fund are now being accepted The Commercial Events Fund has been set up to help create economic benefit to this region by attracting new events and helping to build on existing events which have potential to grow. The fund is being split 70%/30% between new and existing events.

Applications are invited now for commercial events occurring within the Marlborough District Council boundaries. Community events, conferences, conventions, trade shows and exhibitions are not eligible.

Funding will be granted on an annual basis but this does not mean that all funds must be distributed each year.

Council’s Events Fund subcommittee (Mayor Alistair Sowman, Councillors Trevor Hook, Jenny Andrews and Jamie Arbuckle plus the chairman (or nominee) of Destination Marlborough) will consider the

applications.

Applications for the current funding round will close on 30 September 2014 with decisions to be announced at the end of October.

Another season more complaints from this lady with chip on shoulder who walks her out of control savage Alsatian at diversion, the dog chases any other dog that is around and 2 years ago rushed a camper from behind and grabbed his leg. There are only 3 campers along the half km, stretch of river where she walks. Plenty of space for all. Suggest she control her dog, pickup it’s poo and get a life.

The diversion is not a registrd river, and cannot sustain the beating it’s takn with the sock nets.

MDC Ban the camping, the others who use methods such as spoting and scoopn that dnt rely in bein there all day wil get a go an a higher percentage of bait wil get thru 2 spawn. MDC u promote good enviromental pratice on 1 hand and then actively promote the devastation of native fish on the other. U have the power 2 stop the camping, ban it now.

Mdc - whitebaiters at diversion MDC why do you allow overnight camping at the diversion during whitebait season? The people in campr vans r there 24-7 so locals who have 2 work during the week at a ligit job, cant get a spot.

The cmpr van lot r abusing this river by commercialy fishn it. They all flog it with there large sock nets daylite 2 dark, they sell their bait, don’t pay tax. They breach the rules ev day by not being withn 10m of net. Shame on mdc for encouraging plunder of a native fish on a non registrd river. Ban the camping asap, thats a good start, shame on gutless doc for not policing properly, Ird go knock on some campers van doors, this lot make a nice tax free income undr your lots nose.

To disappointed spectator (Fri 5th) that’s exactly what you are a spectator! Spare a thought for the hours and hours of work these coaches put in to coach our kids and the hard time they get from parents and sometimes the attitude and disrespect they get from some of these players. Feel free to put your hand up to volunteer and you oblviously don’t watch many silver fern games. I have no issues for my daughter being told off as I believe each coach does an amazing job.

We wonder why our kids are swearing on the court, walk around the courts and listen to the adults and parents, they are the ones that should lead by example.

My voucher has been fraudulently redeemed at your supermarket! And MDC would be good if you could change issuing procedure. Poor business practice I went into bluebridge freight to see if I could get a package put on boat from Wellington, as I have family that works for the Co. Got told “go to a courier as that’s what they do”. Fair enough, but as I left the chap told me to “contact my kin as I may get a freebee”. Wasn’t after that, as I don’t use my family due to their position. What a nerve he’s got. He wouldn’t be working for my company doing that. Interislander were only too happy to oblige and accept my cash.

With the drug house raids on Tues morning!!! I admit to being a bit perplexed that during the Gascoigne st ‘clean up’, Safer communities & police were spending so much time helping prune the trees of law abiding citizens and claiming this reduces crime in the area when the drug houses around the corner on Elizabeth st were still operating... but now I see there was some real undercover policing going on.

Thank you to all involved for helping to tidy up a very nasty side of society and keeping the community safe! We didn’t need help pruning our property but I didn’t like passing the drug houses every time we walked into town!

If you are turning left, indicate left, if you are turning right, indicate right and as you are exciting indicate left. It’s not rocket science, it’s just communication between you and fellow drivers! Why do some people indicate right when you are going straight ahead? Just because you are going around the curve of a roundabout doesn’t mean you are making a turn!!!

In theory, if a vehicle was waiting at each entrance, all should be able to enter the roundabout and happily make their way around it without hesitation, hence flow.

Blenheim art historian and curator Jane Vial will be hosting a two-day weekend workshop on October 18 and 19 for anyone with an interest or curiosity in art, but find it difficult to express themselves.

Titled ‘Discussing Art Confidently’, the workshop is being run through the Marlborough Art Society.

“It’s something I have observed when working as the assistant lecturer of Art History at Victoria University.

Her workshop will be looking at the language and history and of art as well as practicing discussing art with confidence.

This is passionate work for Jane who is an independent consulatant curator through her company Art & Heritage Services.

“Many people know what they like but are often too nervous to express themselves or are worried that what they say will come out wrong.

“My workshop will be interactive where people will be encouraged to speak in a non intimidating way, so by the end of the weekend they will be feeling more confident talking about art,” she said.

Yohanna ‘dreading’ the scissors Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Blenheim woman Yohanna Davidson loves having dreadlocks, but has decided to part with them for a worthwhile cause.

She will be cutting off her dreads on September 20 in a public display of support for CanTeen and the Terri Stunell Memorial Scholarship, in memory of a friend who lost her fight with cancer.

“Terri was a good friend of mine who, aged 23, found a mole on her thigh which was diagnosed as a melanoma.

“Although initial treatment appeared to have been successful, it was later found to have spread throughout her body.

“It was then I decided to shave my head to raise money to help her, but she was so well cared for by CanTeen she couldn’t think of anything more she required,” Yohanna said.

Yohanna first had her hair dreaded nearly six years ago when travelling through Thailand.

The search for someone to dread her hair in Chiang Mai proved difficult, but eventually she found a man called Lem who spent six hours outside a McDonalds restaurant knotting her hair using crochet hooks.

“Being in a public place having my hair done created such a great sense of community, I had tourists stopping to talk with me and my friends.

“I have decided to try and recreate the same scene by cutting my hair in the Forum. My hope is that people will come down and be part of the

Shanghai to London Rally Noeline’s blog Monday 9th June 2014.

Day in Moscow.

We all met in the hotel lobby at 10 for a city bus tour - was good to be in the bus and give the drivers a break, with the boys at the back where they should be. We went to the lookout point over Moscow and saw the university building, Red Square, the Kremlin, the Cathedral and monasteries.

It was all beautiful. We visited Red Square where Lenin's tomb is, and Stalin's burial site against the Kremlin wall on one side of the square. On the opposite side is the most upmarket mall in Russia with all the shops you would find in Paris. There were some school children painting in the park and some of their paintings were for sale. We thought we had got away from the police now that we were on the bus but they still stopped us in the middle of town. I am sure they were watching us.

We had lunch at a Chinese restaurant, then Greg asked Ron and a few other guys to go and meet with the ambassador for afternoon tea. The ambassador was interested in the All Blacks and asked all the right questions.

He was aware of the latest game. It's good to know the important stuff is right at the fore front in the political areas!!!

Later we caught up with Ron and Nancy and went back to Red Square to have dinner and walk through the mall. Nancy and I had to visit the historical ladies powder room at a cost of 84 RUB. Very nice and extremely over the top but was built for another time.

We had our photo taken outside Tiffany's, but sadly no purchases.

Then on the metro back to the hotel, and we didn't get lost!

Leaving Moscow Tuesday 10th June 2014 We started with a nice breakfast in the huge dining room with all nationalities - so much food to choose from didn't know where to start. You had to pay for parking at the hotel - 2,000 rubles. John and Jan lost their parking ticket and had to purchase another.

We didn't realise that after you brought your ticket you only had 10 minutes to get out.

Wes was the 'tail-end Charlie' so he waited, but his time was up so he couldn't get out of the carpark and had to buy another ticket!

We all waited up the road and they finally got out, then Keith and Lorraine missed the turn off but got sorted and caught up. Finally we were on our way and we started to see familiar petrol stations like BP and Shell.

Here we were able to speed up, although the old cars couldn’t go too fast - they might fall apart! Out of all the millions of cars we have passed and seen so far, we saw only one rusty car.

We drove past the memorial where the Germans got to but didn’t quite make it to Moscow. We have done 400km today, so we're looking forward to arriving in Novgorod, St. Petersburg.

CORYS Electrical charity roadie CORYS Electrical Blenheim store at 29 Main Street will be receiving a very special visit from a little car flying big blue colours on September 24.

The CORYS Electrical franchise is running its charity roadie, driving its Mini Austin the length of New Zealand.

The mini has been painted in a bright blue colour to highlight the awareness of Prostate Cancer for Blue September.

This will be the third year that the charity roadie has run. In 2012 $22,000 was raised and in 2013 $35,000 was raised.

This year organisers have

Slam junk!

By Adam Poulopoulos A focus on the environment shone through at the Bohally Intermediate Science and Technology Fair this week.

George Glover, a year seven student, won the technology section of the fair with his project ‘Slam Junk.’

He wanted to get kids more interested in recycling, so placed a basketball hoop and backboard on a recycling bin.

The results were stark. In the week with the hoop in place, 605 items were recycled.

In the week without the hoop, there were 92 items placed in the bin.

Volunteers perform tasks, including helping the elderly out of the Presbyterian Support van, and assisting with daily activities.

The service provides different day outings five times a week for over 65-year-olds.

Totara day service coordinator Libby MacAskill said the volunteers would get as much out of it as the participants.

She said the service played a crucial role.

“They come for the socialisation and companionship. A majority of our clients live home alone and struggle to get out.

“It’s not until you get a bit older and you’re sitting at home alone and think ‘who am I going to talk to?”

It has been a big year for gridiron player Michael Sam. The African-American from a coastal Texas town with a similar population to Blenheim finished his American football college career ranked one of the best defensive prospects in the country.

However, he was seen as too small and too slow to play one position effectively in the pros.

Nevertheless Sam, 24, was taken in the National Football League draft in May, picked by the St Louis Rams.

However, with the Rams choosing to strengthen other positions, Sam was cut, and has just been added to the Dallas Cowboys practice squad.

FOOTBALL The Picnic end-of-season football tournament is being held this weekend in Picton.

The tournament is an annual fundraiser for the Picton Football youth team.

Twelve men’s teams and five women’s teams have signed up for the event.

MARINA 2 MARINA Registrations are still open for the Marina 2 Marina event in Picton next month.

The run is being held on Saturday, October 18, and includes four different distance categories.

It seems from that information Sam is just another prospect that hasn’t quite made it, but in actual fact he’s been generating more buzz than just about everybody.

Shirts with his name were the sixth-highest selling of any NFL footballer between April and mid-July.

Why is Sam creating so much hype? Answer - he came out as gay in February.

A handful of American athletes have come out, but only during or after their careers.

Sam has become the first openly gay player to be drafted into the NFL. Barack Obama called it “an important step forward” for a nation which only allows same-sex

marriage in 19 of its states.

It has been tough sometimes for athletes to announce their homosexuality.

In 1990 Justin Fashanu was the first professional British footballer to come out, and he suffered backlash from the community before committing suicide in 1998.

In a week when Baltimore Ravens player Ray Rice was suspended indefinitely for knocking out his fiancée, maybe it’s important to focus on something more positive.

There was some criticism of Sam, but let’s hope the praise he’s received continues, and he gets judged on how he plays above anything else.

Long-term, she said she wanted to keep going with as many sports as possible, but admitted there would be greater opportunities in netball as she grew older.

In between her sporting commitments Jordan is preparing for NCEA Level 1 exams, and works at Peters Doig Chartered Accountants part-time.

Tournament week

The Marlborough Boys’ College hockey team finished second in the 16-team Coaches Cup hockey tournament in Blenheim last week.

They were beaten on penalty strokes by Roncalli College in the final.

The MBC football team also finished second, at the Trident Trophy tournament in Nelson.

The standouts among Marlborough Girls’ College students was swimmer Sally McMath, who won a gold, silver and bronze at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Swimming Championships in Wellington, and Georgia Catterick, who won the under-19 yellow jersey at the Cuddon Cycle Tour held locally.

The MGC football team finished third in their tournament, with a five win-two loss record, and the netball team finished seventh, with Portia Barcello named in the talented player group from A Grade.

By Adam Poulopoulos Spectators to Eastern States Speedway will have a way of staying a bit warmer on those cool nights this season.

A new carpark area, holding 20 vehicles, has been set up on one side of the track, allowing people to watch the racing from the comfort of their vehicle.

Patrons can purchase a park for an evening’s racing when they come to watch.

Committee president Frank Burns said it was an exciting new initiative.

“It’ll be great if it’s a bit of a cold night, or if people are a bit older or have a disability, it will make things easier.”

In another change, track marshals will be seated on the outside of the gate this season.

“They can sit out there with their mates instead of being alone on the inside of the track, and they’ll be radioed in to the tower,” Burns said.

The season begins with speedway’s grand opening on October 25, and will finish on April 18 next year.
