By Les Whiteside The Post Primary Teachers Assn of Marlborough Boys’ College have misgivings on the proposed two schools on one site.

At a meeting on Monday night the PPTA invited, by invitation only, a group of Marlborough people to discuss the lack of information forthcoming from the Education Ministry.

PPTA spokesperson and teacher Ngaire Searle said the government says we have three options, but she said the option of $51.5 million to build two new schools on one site doesn’t give us any specifics.

“How can we agree to this when the ministry cannot tell us how big the school will be and which facilities we will have?

We know there will be no swimming pool.” Ngaire also said the proposed open plan for teaching will not work. “How can I teach my class when right next to us we have another class with no walls between us?”

Callouts on the rise for rescue Donations needed

By Adam Poulopoulos The Nelson Marlborough Rescue Helicopter Trust general manager says the public’s generosity is crucial, as callouts for the service have spiked in 2014.

Between January and August, callouts rose by 35 percent on the same period last year, and up until the end of July, an average of 40 calls a month had been made in 2014.

General manager Paula Muddle said the service was receiving support from Marlborough, but it was still running about $500,000 short per annum.

She sa id she hoped Marlborough could continue to bring funds in, using the recent Ulysses charity ride as an example.

“They may only raise one

or two thousand dollars but it adds up to being a significant amount of money.

“Just because we’re not based in Blenheim doesn’t mean we don’t offer the same service as Nelson. We can be there in 15 minutes.”

The unpredictability of callouts was also a factor. On one day in June, the helicopter received six callouts, having not received one at all for the five days prior.

“Some days we might start the engines and we won’t stop, and we have to refuel out at Omaka or something,” Ms Muddle said.

Greens Party MP and oldboy Stephan Browning still prefers a co-ed school, even though the local population wants two single sex schools.

He also said he doesn’t believe the present site fits.

MBC board chairman Tony de Reeper commented this meeting should have been held before submissions closed.

He commented on the overdue maintenance on the MBC which has been there for a decade.

“There are still current issues and we don’t have the money to catch up and fix these problems”.

He agreed with the meeting, we need to retain the school culture.

Ngaire Searle said the ministry has no formula for schools as to how much should be spent on a new school.

Councillor John Leggett said why were there not any representatives from the Girls college at this meeting?

There were comments that the Girls College were leading the combined site idea.

The Ministry of Education is considering the best way to upgrade both colleges after discovering they were in need of significant building repairs.

After an initial round of consultation that began in late 2013, three options have been presented for consideration.

Option A – Relocation of one or both schools to a co-located site Option B – Retaining the status quo Option C – One co-educational school With the ministry prepared to inject $51.5 million and $52.6m into options A and C, but only put up $10.8m for option B.

Police shut down drug houses

Police in Marlborough raided five houses simultaneously yesterday morning searching for drugs, including neighbouring properties in Elizabeth Street.

Police believe these properties have been operating as tinnie houses for some time.

Search warrants were also executed at Budge Street, Scott Street and also in Picton.

A further two houses were searched yesterday afternoon in Blenheim.

As a result, 10 adults and one youth have been arrested and will face a range of drug-related charges. They appear in court today.

Class A, B and C drugs including cannabis, cannabis oil, prescription medicines, methamphetamine and stolen property were recovered during the searches.

Marlborough Area commander inspector Simon Feltham said police had been involved in an intensive street cleanup involving a wide range of community groups a week ago in Gascoigne Street.

NZDF training in Marlborough Sounds A training exercise involving two Royal New Zealand Air Force (RNZAF) Iroquois helicopters is being held in the Marlborough Sounds area from today through to Monday, 15 September.

This will involve day and night flying, with RNZAF helicopters operating at low level, at times within the Marlborough Sounds.

“We have made a major impact on the drug-dealing network in Riversdale and hope the residents do not have to endure these activities any further.”

Forty-four Police staff were involved in yesterday’s operation, including a drug detection dog from Christchurch.

Of particular concern to police was the presence of young children and babies at several of the addresses.

“It is reprehensible that these offenders have placed children and babies in this dangerous environment,” inspector Feltham said.

He said Child Youth and Family was assisting Police to ensure the safety of the children.

Echo’s final days may be near

By Adam Poulopoulos The masts of one of Picton’s most recognisable boats have been removed, while the whole boat may be about to go too.

A.S. Echo, which is at Picton Marina, had its mast removed by Port Marlborough workshop staff yesterday.

The ship housed the Echo Café and Bar until recently, but the last owners were unable to meet the council requirements for a food outlet.

Marlborough, deemed the masts, rigging booms and dilapidated timber on the boat safety concerns, and removed them.

Port Marlborough projects manager Rose Prendeville said the boat posed several risks.

“The structure itself is severely decomposed. There are pieces of timber falling down the side.

“It looked like a great jungle gym to climb on, so it posed a great risk for kids if they decided to go climbing.”

A.S. Echo, which is grounded at Picton Marina, is being dismantled.

She said earthquakes and southerly winds also had the potential to cause problems.

Currently, Port Marlborough is applying for resource consent to remove the structure entirely.

Ms Prendeville said Port Marlborough was working with organisations including Marlborough Historical Society, Brayshaw Park and Edwin Fox Society to ensure historical items,

like photos and the steering wheel, ended up in the correct place.

She said the spot would be tidied and the sea wall reinstated were the boat to be removed.

The Marlborough District Council’s Assets and Services committee has agreed to a summer trial of a no-parking zone along London Quay.

The trial is designed to create more outdoor dining space for the waterfront cafes and provide better harbour views.

The speed limit on that section of Londay Quay will be slowed to 20kms/hr and will run from this Labour Weekend until Easter 2015.

Renwick water shutdown Renwick residents are advised to store water ahead of a water shutdown from 11:00 pm Monday, 15 September until 5:00am Tuesday 16 September.

The shutdown will enable the replacement of the treatment plant discharge pipe and flow control equipment upgrade.

The supply may be resumed at any time between these hours without further notice.

Grant for Marlborough freshwater project Government has announced it will provide $150,000 to support the set-up of an e-planning system to enable efficient water allocation in Marlborough.

The funding was awarded to the Marlborough District Council from the Government’s Community Environment Fund.

The e-planning tool will allow water users like farmers, viticulturists, horticulturists and industry to identify water demand for their property based on soil type, climate conditions and crop type.

New shop for St John

By Adam Poulopoulos St John Marlborough hopes their new gift store can generate the funds to buy four new life packs.

St John’s new charity shop will be in half the old Video Ezy building on Boyce Street.

The store will sell donated goods like clothing, furniture, small electrical items and jewellery.

They have tentatively set election day, Saturday, September 20, as an opening date.

St John Marlborough area commander Rod Hill said they were counting on Marlborough’s generosity to buy the life packs, valued at $22,000 each.

“We need money, and we have a pressing need to buy these life packs. None of the money is going out of Marlborough.

“If the people get behind us, we can do it.”

Mr Hill said four new ambulances was the purchase planned after the life packs.

“That one might take a bit longer,” he said.

The building’s refit was carried out free of charge after several local businesses got involved, and Mr Hill said he was grateful for their support.

Marlborough Master Builders president Ken Anderson said the group were more than happy to give their support.

Deal for hub caps Dear Ed I would like to thank the person who removed the four hub caps from my green 1994 Mitsubishi Lancer and for leaving the wheels and tyres behind.

You might remember the vehicle was parked in the Marlborough Harbour Board Car Park opposite the Strait Shipping Picton Office over the weekend of 17 and 18 August.

By leaving the four wheels behind I was able to drive safely home without having to rebalance myself in a three legged car.

The Sun

Hand carved and unique Picton man David Metcalf has been carving his interpretation of the classic walking stick for many years.

Our reporter Celeste Lodewyk went to see his work and share his passion.

David, who only recently moved to Picton, has a true gift when it comes to nature.

Not only is he a horse whisperer and trainer, but he makes walking sticks like you have never seen before - literally!

Each walking stick he makes is a oneoff design which he sells to people of all ages, particularly young women he says.

“I am amazed at the number of women in their 20’s buying my sticks which is unusual many people would think, but the interest is there because they are so different,” he says.

David spends a lot of time in the bush either hunting or walking and it’s on these excursions that he finds the sticks he wants to carve.

He prefers to use manuka, white pine, beech and lancewood and chooses them for their different shapes and forms.

“I can walk for miles and not find the right stick. I know in my mind what I am looking for and when I do come across a stick I can see the potential it has and how it will look,” he says.

He takes the sticks back to his shed and begins hand carving them.

“Some I sculpt into different designs, including having snakes entwined around the stick while others I embellish with unique brass and silver objects or even hide and horns from animals I get out hunting.

“Some have a funky twist while others I keep as natural as possible. One challenge I enjoy is leaving the bark on and carving into it for different effects,” he says.

David first began carving walking sticks in the 1970’s purely for fun, but has got more serious about it in recent months.

“Being a bushman carving sticks and making knives were things you did to pass the time, but today it’s become a real art form.

“The aluminium sticks you see mass produced are boring and don’t have any character, but with mine you know you are getting something that’s naturally made, strong and matches the person’s personality.

“They are designed for people to walk with whether they are hiking, bush walking, out walking with the dog or simply getting about.

“I have had people come up to me at markets and spot a particular stick that appealed to them, and instantly they have a big smile on their face which is why I do this.

“It’s not about making money, I love making them and if they make others happy too then it’s all been worthwhile,” he says.

David is planning to sell his walking sticks to tourists arriving in Picton on cruise ships as well as various markets around Marlborough.

Patients surveyed on their hospital experience Nelson Marlborough District Health Board (NMDHB) is encouraging people to respond to a new survey asking for feedback on their stay in hospital.

An invitation to participate in the national survey has been sent to a random selection of Marlborough people who spent at least one night in hospital from August 4 to 17.

Patients will be able to fill in the survey online using a computer, tablet or smartphone, or they can post their response if they do not have an email address.

This will be the first time hospital patients’ feedback has been collected and measured in the same way across New Zealand.

Developed by the Health

Quality & Safety Commission, the survey will help to improve the quality of hospital care and understand how well health services are working for patients and their families.

The survey responses will be anonymous unless patients choose to supply contact details.

NMDHB Chief Executive, Chris Fleming said he wanted

to hear from people who have experienced Wairau Hospital services and what does and doesn't work for patients.

NMDHB will send the survey to patients once every three months. Responses will be collated to give each DHB a rating out of 10 in four areas: coordination, partnership, communications, and physical and emotional needs.

Like a piece of cake in a ball, they are clean to eat and extremely moreish.

These banana balls are great for infants starting solids and are suitable for freezing.

• 1 ripe banana, peeled • 8 digestive biscuits, crushed to a rustic crumb • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon castor sugar

Preheat the oven to 180°C. Combine the biscuit crumbs, cinnamon and sugar.

Mash the banana very well.

Stir in about ¾ of the biscuit crumbs, reserving the rest to roll the balls in. The dough should be soft and malleable but not too sticky – add more crumbs if necessary.

Roll teaspoonfuls of the mixture into balls and gently

toss in the remaining crumb mix to coat.

Place on a baking tray and bake for 10–12 minutes. Remove and cool. The balls should be moist but not gooey.

These balls are best eaten the same day, but can be frozen and microwaved.

By Celeste Lodewyk The Coastguard Marlborough is opening its doors on Saturday to show what goes on behind the scenes and for the public to meet its crew and volunteers.

The open day runs from 10am - 2pm and is located at the Picton Emergency Co-Ordination Centre at Memorial Park and Picton Marina.

People are encouraged to have a look around the communications centre and to jump aboard the Interislander Rescue boat which will be at the Picton Marina, or the Port Marlborough rescue boat which will be on a trailer at the centre.

"This day is about public awareness, for the crew to meet with the public and answer any questions," Coastguard Marlborough committee member Bo Baines said.

Anyone owning a life jacket is welcome to take it along to be checked for free, as well as any old car or boat batteries which Coastguard Marlborough will have recycled.

"The battery recycling is part of our ongoing fundraiser which will be helping toward the cost of building a

Inspired by the lens Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Beautiful photographs are not only inspiring to those viewing them, but also to the photographer.

This was discovered by secondary school students attending Blenheim’s Mana Rangatahi education programme who have recently completed a photography course.

The highlight for these students will be having their photographs in an exhibition set for this Friday and Saturday at the Gillan Gallery, Grove Road.

The six week course was the idea of photographer Bridgette Knox who volunteered to work with the students in

years 9, 10 and 11.

Students went out of the classroom and photographed a wide range of topics from portraits, landscapes through to fashion.

Having their photographs exhibited will be a “huge confidence boost”, said teacher Roslyn Jones.

“We are so grateful to Gillan Gallery and Bridgette Knox for their support.”

Student Jahtivah Filipo (14) said photography had sparked a real interest for her in the arts.

The photograph she is entering is that of her toddler niece dressed up and posing for the fashion category.

Disappointed at WINZ abuse Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman has spoken out against the abuse d i re cted towa rd Work and Income New Zealand staff in the wake of the Ashburton tragedy where two staff lost their lives.

He said it was pro- Mayor Alistair Sowman foundly disappointing.

“I would hope that the people of Marlborough realise that our WINZ staff are also part of our community and are doing a worthwhile job as public servants.

"It is not always an easy job and they do not deserve to be the subject of abuse or threats.”

Mr Sowman says he had been assured that security had been strengthened at the Blenheim office of WINZ after police were called to the office last Wednesday.

The vast majority of people would understand that the Ashburton deaths had been enormously stressful for WINZ staff everywhere including Blenheim, he said.

“It’s a sad day when these staff are being made to feel distressed and unsafe in the course of their work,” he said.

New facility opened

By Adam Poulopoulos Year seven and eight students at Redwoodtown School can look forward to learning in new ways in the school’s new modern learning environment.

Deputy mayor Terry Sloan opened the school’s new modern learning environment at a ceremony on Friday.

The space contains four learning areas in an open-plan setup.

It will be home to 75 students and three teachers.

Principal Gary Hildyard said he was excited to see the impact the new space would have.

“It’s proven children are not at their most comfortable when they’re sitting up at

“This comes at a time when the Ministry of Education is rationalising schools around New Zealand, yet here we are in Marlborough with a growing roll, growing staff and now growing bricks and mortar in the grounds too.”

Renwick jumble sale set for Saturday

Leroy’s lung-busting run

By Adam Poulopoulos Running 100 kilometres while suffering tunnel vision and severe cramps is not everyone’s idea of fun, but a Blenheim man embraced it all, and for a good cause.

Leroy de Beer recently completed the Great Naseby Water Race in a time of 14 hours, 11 minutes.

Leroy, a physical training instructor at the New Zealand Defence Force Physical Education and Recreational Training School at Woodbourne, raised $2100 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association, after his brotherin-law passed away from the disease.

He said he was proud of the achievement.

“I’m just coming off the buzz of finishing it now.

“I was targeting $2000, so it was pretty cool to achieve it. I raised between $400 and $500 in the last week.”

The race was run in the Central Otago town of Naseby, which sits 600 metres above sea level.

“The first 50 kilometres was alright, but then I started feeling it. My legs

started cramping quite a bit,” Leroy said.

As the race continued, his exertions took a more dramatic toll.

“I had my spotlight on and I started getting tunnel vision, so all I could see was the light.

“A couple of times I had to stop and reassess myself.”

Leroy’s wife Romsey completed the last five kilometres with him, and he said he was appreciative of the support.

“It was awesome. I’ve done a few marathons where hundreds of people have been cheering, but by the time I finished there were about six people.

“After the race I got a medal, a hug and a beer, and that was it.

“My in-laws had a great time. They were a great support crew.”

Leroy returned to the gym and the bike this week and plans to complete events like the Molesworth Run, Queenstown Marathon and Forrest GrapeRide in the next few months.

When he returned home he asked his cousin, who also had MS, if he would join him in a similar type group, and from there more people joined.

One person who has found the group valuable is Marion Weaver who has Parkinson’s Disease.

“I have had Parkinson’s for two years and the first thing I noticed was that I couldn’t do swimming lessons. I had trouble doing what the instructor was saying, so I gave up.

“I came along to this group and immediately my confidence began to grow and now I can enjoy the water again,” she said.

Saturday September 6, was the starting date for the Blenheim Racing Pigeon Clubs old bird season.

All racing pigeons of any age can compete. The 150km distance from Parnassus was the first race.

The birds were liberated from the clubs pigeon trailer at 10am into very good weather conditions with no winds.

Donald Morrison of Spring Creek recorded the winning velocity of 1191.05 mpm with his Blue Chequer hen 156 who completed the journey in a little over 2 hours flying time.

Second position went to Alister Cooper of Renwick whose Mealy Cock 742 obtained a velocity of 1135.55 mpm and third place to club president Carl Kirkwood of Spring Creek with his Blue Chequer hen 354 achieving a velocity of 1094.52 meters per minute.

“Diseases like MS and Parkinson’s are really anti-social. Many sufferers find it easy to stay home rather than getting out.

“This is why I wanted to create a social group based on aqua exercise that people can come to, build their confidence and meet other people,” he said.

Earlier in the year David formed the group Aqua Jogging Fitness Workout, which is open to anyone wanting gentle exercise and new people to meet.

The group is run on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 10:30am to 11:30am at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 and is free to attend, only the pool entry fee is required.
