Picton wants carnival “The return of the iconic Picton Summer Carnival could be the boost we need.”

Story and photo by Celeste Lodewyk Picton man Glenn Howard has gone public with his desire to reintroduce the ‘Picton Summer Carnival’ which was last held in the 1970’s.

Since launching his initiative, Glenn has been inundated with support from Picton businesses and the community.

The carnival was a two week long event held along the Picton foreshore, and attracted hundreds of tourists to the area, as well as providing a family friendly holiday activity for Marlburians, he said.

Glenn intends to call a public meeting in Picton to gauge people’s thoughts and to drum up support for the reintroduction of the carnival.

Picton Summer Carnival Continued from page 1 “The Picton Summer Carnival would run for two weeks in January/February during the midst of Picton’s busy tourist season, and would incorporate such things as a stage for talent quests, painting competitions for children, and markets and stalls, as well as bring back the big carnival sideshow rides and alley games to the foreshore.

“We would also have parades and bring back beauty pageants.

“I have spoken with a number of Picton businesses who were immediately on board with the idea.

“It’s about bringing the carnival fun back into Picton and encouraging people to spend money with our local businesses via accommodation, food and retail,” he said.

Last Thursday Glenn used the ‘Then & Now : Picton & The Marlborough Sounds’ Facebook page to launch his initiative, and has so far been inundated with supportive comments and photographs from past carnivals.

feedback I have had from the Facebook page and from local businesses I have spoken with, it’s pretty clear that Picton people want the carnival back.

“It was a truly iconic event for Picton and for Marlborough and the financial spin-off would be fantastic, so the more support we can get the better,” Glenn said.

Top viticulture award for Giesen employee

Marlborough’s 2014 Young Viticulturist of the Year said his award was a reflection of a lifelong passion for growing grapes.

Brenton O’Riley, a viticulture technician for Giesen Wines, won the award at the day-long competition held on Friday.

Six competitors had to complete four theory modules and four practical sessions, a three minute prepared speech and a 40-question quiz.

Having topped both the practical sessions and the quiz, Brenton, 25, was announced the winner at a dinner event held in the evening.

Matt Duggan from Cloudy Bay claimed second, while third place went to Jaimee Whitehead from Treasury Wine Estates.

For Brenton, the win is the culmination of a busy seven months, since he

farms in the Manawatu, he said he had always been set on getting involved in viticulture.

“I always had this bizarre passion from a young age that I wanted to grow grapes. I don’t know where it stemmed from; it’s just always been there.”

Brenton is no stranger to the Young Viticulturist competition, having taken part in the Hawke’s Bay round twice in recent years.

He described the competition as a fantastic opportunity to challenge himself.

“You get the opportunity to gauge yourself against your peers.

“You learn a lot of skills while meeting like-minded people and you learn a lot of stuff, stuff that you might not have the chance to learn while working in the field.”

Brenton will now go on to represent Marlborough at the National Young Viticulturist of the Year at the Romeo Bragato Conference later this month.

Goat adopts abandoned lamb

By Celeste Lodewyk Spring is certainly in the air, not only with the warmer temperatures recorded last week, but with the early lambing.

This year something unusual was discovered by local woman Marianna Daly of 3 Daughter’s Vineyard.

A newborn lamb was one of twins when it was abandoned by its mother last week, but what stepped in as a surrogate mother has raised many eyebrows.

A British alpine goat, which had never kidded itself, had begun to produce milk to support this lamb.

Named ‘Mama Cass’, the goat has happily taken over the care of the lamb and as a dairy goat, can produce up to six litres of milk per day, Marianna said.

“The goat’s breed is known for producing good quality milk so the lamb is being well cared for,” she said.

The lamb was part of a mob of sheep that came through from the Kenepuru Sounds and are currently lambing in the 3 Daughter’s Vineyard at Grovetown.

Marianna said even though lambing is early at this time of year, it is not uncommon.

Blenheim builders beaming

By Adam Poulopoulos Three Blenheim companies won trophies at the Marlborough, Nelson and West Coast Registered Master Builders 2014 House of the Year awards in the weekend.

Roger Hogg Builders won the supreme renovation award and a gold renovation award for properties worth over $500,000.

Also, Stonewood Homes Marlborough won gold in the new homes under $250,000 division.

They also claimed silver and bronze awards in the $250,000-$350,000 category, while Peter Ray Homes also won a silver award in that group.

Roger Hogg Builders won their award for a three-bedroom villa at a local vineyard, which they renovated and added 86 square metres to.

The project took 10 months to complete.

Owner Roger Hogg said he was delighted to win while maintaining a lot of the house’s existing character.

“The building’s owners wanted to keep the property, so we could have started new, but the brief was particularly strong on that.

Stonewood Homes won a category for the second year running, and director David Campbell said that was what stuck out the most.

A woman in her 60s was hit by a train in Blenheim yesterday morning.

She was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The woman is believed to have been crossing Redwood Street when she walked into the path of a southbound train. The train driver sounded his horn but was unable to avoid the crash.

ONE INJURED One passenger received minor injuries after a vehicle struck a lamp post and rolled at Bells Road on Saturday night.

Organiser Carol Taylor said Marlborough businesses and the community got behind the show ‘100 per cent’.

“Without this support we couldn’t have this show, so from the bottom of our hearts - thank you!”

“We sold 170 tickets this year which was up on last year and we are ever so grateful to everyone who came along to the show,” she said.

The committee has received feedback from the show which will be taken into consideration for next year.

by Celeste Lodewyk The annual Big Latch-On was held last Friday at the Clubs of Marlborough, where 38 breastfeeding mothers attended with their families and supporters.

It wasn’t the highest number the Marlborough event has ever recorded, but the smiles and friendly banter made it the success it was.

This year was a joint collaboration between Plunket and the Nelson Marlborough District Health Board who had representatives running the event.

“It has been a fantastic event with so many wonderful mums coming along to support the Big Latch On, some with newborn babies and some with toddlers so overall it was a great success,” said lactation consultant Jackie Martin.

Many of the attending mothers also enjoyed meeting and making new friends.

The Big Latch On event involves groups of breastfeeding women coming together at registered locations around New Zealand and the

world to all latch on their child at a set time.

All the breastfeeding women and children are latched on for one minute at the set time and are counted by the witnesses.

The numbers are added up to see if previous records have been beaten.

At the time of printing the New Zealand total had not been released.

Dear Ed, It’s exciting to see the Springlands roundabouts being built. Already the cars seem to be correctly using them - despite the speed restrictions and road works going on.

Wet weather shelter Dear Ed, In Council’s Resource Consent Application under ACTIVITY it is stated: To erect a Public Bus Stop/Shelter outside the I-Site in Picton.

The intention is to provide weather shelter and waiting facilities for the travelling public on journeys on the national bus network within the South Island.

This “intention” at present is not fulfilled with this structure.

It does not provide adequate weather shelter, it actually channels the flow of rainwater onto the waiting public.

In not so many words: The structure does not provide what was applied for!

Therefore: 1. It either has to be changed to enable it to do what was applied for (new consents required, both resource & building) or 2. It has to be demolished immediately.

But Dean Heiford who signed the application for the Council knew all this.

He also knew of the total cost of this folly.

College consult Dear Ed, There had been so far no fair, open, equal and informed consultation process looking at the better option of co-location versus co-education for Blenheim.

Therefore a decision should be deferred as the process was hugely flawed.

It needs a future proof concept for young people in Blenheim.

Structures we build now need to accommodate constantly developing methods of learning and modern learning environments.

Colleges need to prepare the young for their diverse, mixed gender, social and professional lives of the future.

This might be achieved with co-location now but do not close the door on co-education for another 50 years.

Dear Ed, To be honest, I think that two co-educational colleges should be built on one location.

One should be the junior school and the other the senior school.

This would allow students to develop, socialise and learn from their similar aged peers and maybe even cut out a percentage of the bullying that goes on between seniors and juniors.

If they were schooling alongside one another this wouldn’t be such a problem.

A lifetime in Marlborough There is not much Brian Powell doesn’t know about or hasn’t done in Marlborough. Brian, who has just been recognised for 40 years’ service as a Justice of the Peace, spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about life in our province.

There aren’t many people more qualified to talk about Marlborough’s history than Brian Powell.

He was born in Fabians Valley as part of a family that had settled in Marlborough after emigrating from England.

The third of six siblings, the trips to school were always eventful for the clan.

Brian said the first four of them would ride a draught horse, Bonnie, the four and a half miles to Pine Valley School.

“There wasn’t a saddle or anything,” he said.

He said the road was sometimes frozen solid, and often the kids would miss school due to severe flooding in the creeks.

“There used to be frost in April.

“We’ve got a bit soft these days.”

As Brian grew older, he began to help on the family farm more and more.

He stayed an extra year in form two after his father had a farm accident, and missed college altogether.

“All I’ve done over the years, I’ve had to teach myself,” he said.

“When I wanted to do something I learned it, and I’ve been lucky.”

During his teenage years Brian started hunting, a pastime he has pursued throughout his life.

“It gets into your blood,” he said.

After a series of road maintenance jobs Brian married Frances, and took over a cottage at Langley Dale, in the Northbank.

While Frances would drive school buses, Brian used to hunt goats and possums and maintain the farm.

“I’d skin and skin all day until I filled my pack, which was 130 pounds in those days,” Brian said.

He said the work would continue when Frances got home.

“We’d go into the wool shed and stretch skins until 10 or 11 at night, while the kids were in bed.

“It was a lot of work, but that was how

we bought our first deep freezers, washing machine and carpets.

“That’s how you get ahead - work your guts out on a second job.”

It seems a wonder then that Brian has been the Justice of the Peace serving Northbank since 1974, when he was sworn in aged 31.

“Even my own father thought I had taken the job 30 years too soon!” He said.

“They started looking for more JPs, especially in rural areas, otherwise people had to go into town to see the magistrate.”

After a few years as a JP Brian and Frances added ‘marriage celebrant’ to their list of achievements, and Brian continues to perform them today.

He said at the time, his cousin was the only other celebrant in Blenheim.

“We’ve done hundreds. Up to 80 weddings a year, and sometimes four or five in one day.

“A lot of them are my friends now. Once I married a couple, and after they split, I married the husband again.

“Now I’ve married his sons, and his grandsons.”

Brian has been involved in several other local organisations, including Outward Bound for 50 years.

“It’s the best outlet we have for kids to learn to work together,” he said.

He has also been president of a variety of farming groups, and was a founding member of the Northbank Rural Fire Force.

Despite retiring from the fire force he still works on the roads, stopping traffic.

Now living in Renwick, he works parttime pruning grapes at his own vineyard at Fabians Valley.

“It makes you feel old,” he said.

“It’s been a great busy life.”

Brian’s journey, and that of Fabians Valley and Northbank, has been charted in his book ‘Memories and History of the Golden Valley.’

A taste of Hollywood

By Adam Poulopoulos Stars of zombie flick ‘Outer Darkness’ got dressed up in a very different way for the film’s red carpet screening.

The cast and crew premiere event was held at Top Town Cinemas on Sunday night.

They walked down the red carpet and spoke to Natasha Knox from The Rock, who was conducting E! channel-style

interviews.

About 100 attended the event.

‘Outer Darkness,’ which was produced by local company Falvation Films, was filmed in a workshop compound in Blenheim recently.

Falvation Films founder and ‘Outer Darkness’ director Aaron Falvey said he was delighted with the event.

“I’m a little lost for words. It

was a fantastic night, one of the best of my life.

“In the last two years I’ve worked to the point of rewarding not just myself but all those who worked on the movies.”

Mr Falvey said he wanted to emulate the red carpet feeling, especially as he never had the chance to after his first zombie movie ‘Bloodless.’

Scotsman prefers life in Seddon

By Celeste Lodewyk What do you get when a Scotsman takes up farming in Seddon?

You get Neil MacDonald!

Neil works as a tractor driver for Richmond Brook Station, a sheep and beef farm 15 kilometres from Seddon.

His journey to New Zealand is an interesting one, and what better way to showcase the Awatere than to feature a farmer who prefers this region over others in New Zealand.

Neil's story began when he met wife Summa while she was in Scotland on her OE six years ago. At the time he was working seven days a week farming sheep and beef in the Strathspey region in the Highlands.

After eight months the couple moved to Nelson where Neil took up shearing.

"I took up shearing because in Scotland it's common knowledge that if you want to know how to do it well, you go to NZ,” he laughs.

After three years in Nelson, Neil and Summa moved to Seddon where he could return to farming.

"Shearing doesn't give you much of a family life but I knew farming would, so here we are."

The biggest difference Neil has found between Scotland and

Seddon is a better lifestyle for him and his family.

"In Scotland I worked seven days a week and didn't really get anywhere, whereas here the people tend to work hard during the week so they can enjoy their weekends and spend time with their families," he says.

From the moment Neil moved to Seddon he says he was warmly welcomed by the locals and immersed himself in local rugby clubs and entertainment scene.

"I haven't struck anyone that wasn't welcoming, everyone has been great.

"They are my kind of people.

I can give them a good wind-up and they just laugh about it.

"Last year I captained the Senior A team for Awatere but had to miss out this year due to injury, and now I am playing drums for a band that plays at the Starborough Tavern and a number of private functions," he says.

Asked how the weather conditions in the Awatere compare to Scotland, Neil replies; "A lot drier than Scotland."

"In Scotland if you have a frost you will be lucky if temperatures reach one degree during the day," he says.

Like any good Scotsman, Neil plays the bagpipes for the local Blenheim and Districts Highland Pipe Band.

But the bagpipes was something he only took up after arriving in NZ. "I didn't feel like the full Scotsman so I took up the bagpipes so people think they have the real deal when they meet me," he laughs.

Today Neil is relishing his life farming in the Awatere and raising young sons Brodie (2years) and Hadley (10months).

"Seddon is a cool little place, it’s my kind of place," he says.

New bank notes set for next year New Zealand’s currency will take another significant evolutionary step next year when modernised banknotes with more advanced security features are introduced, Reserve Bank deputy governor Geoff Bascand announced last month.

“Security features and the technology for designing and printing banknotes have advanced considerably since the current banknote series was first issued in the early 1990s.

Mr Bascand said Canadian Bank Note Company has been selected to design and print New Zealand’s next series of banknotes.

CBNC currently manufactures New Zealand’s passports.

The new banknotes will be the same size and de-

nominations as the current series, and will continue to be made of a flexible polymer plastic.

While the designs will be updated, the themes of the notes will remain the same, with the same New Zealanders, flora and fauna remaining central to the designs.

The Bank expects to publicly release the ‘near final’ banknote designs in November, after they have been thoroughly tested.

Subject to successful testing, the new notes will be progressively released by denomination, likely starting in the fourth quarter of 2015 and will cocirculate with the current notes for a period of time.

Both the current series and new notes will be legal tender.

Sun sport Road championships Sport inbrief The Marlborough Harriers Club held their road champs at the Grovetown circuit on Saturday.

Conditions for competitors were testing at times, with inclement weather throughout the afternoon.

Robbie Barnes and Kiri Johnson were comfortable winners in the senior grades, while Margaret Hazelwood, Robyn Cliff, Jeremy McKenzie and Rab Rodger won the veteran titles.

Kiri, Margaret and Rab claimed back-to-back titles in their respective grades.

Badminton roundup Marlborough’s senior representative badminton team recently competed in the Division 3 South Island Badminton Finals in Christchurch. Competing in the playoff for fifth to eighth place, Marlborough came out top of their pool and claimed fifth spot.

Winter league volleyball Last Thursday evening Marlborough Volleyball’s FairWeathers’ Senior Winter League played its fifth round at Stadium 2000.

A new team, Notorious D.I.G, has joined the league, taking the premier grade to its full quota for the term.

Mixed emotions for Rogers

By Adam Poulopoulos Weightlifter Bailey Rogers may be a little disappointed with her performance, but her Commonwealth Games is not something she will forget in a hurry.

The Marlborough Girls’ College old girl competed in the 75 kilogram snatch and clean-andjerk at the games in Glasgow last week.

She lifted a combined total of 175kg, which got her seventh place in the division.

She said she was a little disappointed.

“It was 15kg below what I have done previously, and obviously I wanted to go out there and smash out some personal bests, but it didn’t work that way.

“Things happen and your

game plan has to change accordingly. I went from wanting to PB to trying to stay in the competition.”

Rogers, a personal trainer at Franks Brothers CrossFit gym in Christchurch, said the meet was the largest she had ever been to.

“Competing on that platform in front of that many people was one of the most thrilling and terrifying experiences I’ve ever had.

“With hundreds of eyes all focused on you and the silence of the auditorium you feel a little bit of pressure!”

Despite her disappointment Rogers said the whole experience was positive, and she said seeing her roommate pick up a medal stuck out.

Wildcats roar into first season

By Adam Poulopoulos Members of the Redwood Wildcats women’s football team have had a ball in their first season, and do not want it to end there.

The team, made up of 12 mothers, play in the sevena-side women’s league every Saturday.

They formed the team after watching their children score goals, and wanted to get involved themselves.

However, treasurer Michelle Lavender said they got a little more than they bargained for.

“We thought they’d be a masters division and another division, but there weren’t enough teams.
