Wine, cheese and snails on the menu for Sunday

There will also be vin chaud, or hot spicy wine, for those wanting to warm the belly and complimentary escargot, or snails, tastings for those game enough to try some traditional French fare.

While staff at the vineyard traditionally celebrate Bastille Day, they usually do so with an inviteonly event for others in the wine industry.

This is only the second year the event has been open to the public.

The fun family day, which includes games and activities for children, runs from 11am-3pm.

There is no cost to enter.

Scallop season now underway Scallop season has begun, and a hardy group of seven from the Boating Marlborough Dive Centre wasted no time getting out on the water. Adam Poulopoulos went with them to see what the fuss was about.

It’s 4:30 on a chilly Tuesday morning, but Boating Marlborough manager Stuart Scaife and the six others in the group are wide awake.

The group are braving the dark and the cold for the first dive of the new Marlborough scallop season.

Scaife, the trip’s organiser, has made the decision to take out his 26 foot boat ‘Tangaroa,’ with two months of its new paint job remaining.

“Some of the best boat dive times in Marlborough are during the middle of winter,” he says.

“There aren’t many boats and in the summer, you get those afternoon breezes.”

It is the first time the club has started the season with a dive on the first morning.

We travel from Waikawa Marina into Queen Charlotte Sound, although Stuart keeps the exact location close to his chest.

“I can’t be giving away our secret spots.”

The water is 12.4 degrees, and 20 metres deep.

The divers fall backwards into the still water, and after some brief comments about the cold, they head off in two groups.

As he keeps an eye on the faint glow of the divers’ torches, Stuart says there’s more than just scallops to see when you dive in the dark.

“A lot of people miss out if they don’t go night diving.

“There so many different animals - the crabs and crustaceans are often running around.

“You can see the fish sleeping too. You can get inches away from them before they swim away.”

While underwater, the divers measure their scallops, and make sure they stay within the quota set by the Ministry of Primary Industries (MPI.) The group is allowed 50 scallops per person on the boat, plus 100 for the boat itself.

Also, in Marlborough, the scallop must be at least 90 millimetres across the widest part of the shell if you want to take it.

“If you’re caught with undersized scallops, they (MPI) can confiscate your boat,” Stuart says.

About 40 minutes after entering the water, the two groups, including Mark Preece, resurface with their findings.

Mark is happy with how the trip went.

“We’ve got a good haul for the amount of time we spent down there.

“There was beautiful visibility and good numbers. It’s definitely a good way to start the season.”

One year since major quake

By Kristy Martin A lot has changed since the first major earthquake that rocked Marlborough on July 21 last year.

“We have learnt quite a lot and we’ve put systems in place that are relevant to us as a district,” explains Gary Spence, emergency services officer for Marlborough Emergency Management.

When the first of the two major 2013 quakes hit, Gary remembers driving through Renwick when his daughter, a passenger in the car, exclaimed that there had been a major earthquake in Wellington.

She had read news of the 6.5 magnitude quake on Facebook.

Realising the power of social media and its ability to disseminate information in real time, a Marlborough Civil Defence Twitter account has since been set up.

Gary says Facebook could also be used during emergency events, but would act as an information outlet and not a chat facility.

“We now also have specialist public information managers and their job is to get information out to the public in a timely and controlled manner, because we are competing with all the social

media, so we have to ensure that the information going out is the correct information.”

Another new initiative has been the establishment of the ‘Marlborough Emergency Response Team’ earlier this year.

This volunteer team will be responsible for setting up emergency response centres at various locations in the Blenheim area during an event, such as floods, earthquakes and rural fires.

They will also be trained in first aid, working in the Emergency Operations Centre and general light rescue.

There was now good coordination between Marlborough’s emergency services as a response to the earthquakes, the second of which was a magnitude 6.6 that occurred near Seddon on August 16.

“We’ve got a good relationship with the police, fire, ambulance, Marlborough Lines, Marlborough Roads and council and we have liaison representatives from each of these organisations that meet with us regularly.”

Goodbye graffiti

Police assisted a Marlborough District Council ranger in removing graffiti off a central Blenheim building on Wednesday afternoon.

The ranger was removing the tagging on the side of the old movie theatre.

The graffiti has been there for several months.

Community Constable Russell Smith said normally, were not responsible for removing graffiti on evel council 4, Rangitane House, private property.

However, with the building’s owner based outside of Blenheim, it was agreed council would remove the 2 Main Street, Blenheim tagging instead.

The removal followed a spike in tagging in Blenheim Phone: (03) 577 7128 during the last month.

AIRPORT PARKING Short-term parking at Woodbourne Airport remains limited, due to the construction of terminal extensions.

People picking up and dropping off passengers are asked to use the long-term parking, which is free for 20 minutes after entry.



FLU PROGRAMME EXTENDED

This season’s flu immunisation programme has been extended to the end of August.

The programme was set to end at the end of this month, but associate health minister Jo Goodhew says studies show flu cases are rising, and have not peaked yet.

The jab is free for those over 65, pregnant women and those with long-term health conditions.

SAINT CLAIR CLOSES FOR TWO MONTHS The Saint Clair Family Estate cellar door and cafe has been closed as it undergoes refurbishments.

It is due to reopen at the start of September.

Adjacent foodstore Pataka will remain open during the cellar door closure.

TRUST LAUNCHED The newly-formed Marlborough Pacific Trust will be launched in Blenheim this afternoon.

The trust is set to deliver health and social services catering to the 1100 Pacific Islanders living permanently in Blenheim.

The launch, to be held at St Mary’s hall from 5.30pm, will be attended by the Minister of Pacific Island Affairs, Peseta Sam Lotu-Liga.

Bowtique starts strong

By Adam Poulopoulos Two Blenheim sisters are delighted with the way their new clothing store has started out.

Tamsin Banks and Felicity Scammell opened Bowtique PreLoved Children’s Wear, on Maxwell Road, last month.

The store displays pre-loved clothes for zero to twelve-year-old kids on behalf of the seller, who gets a share of the profits.

The seller can sign up for a two-month contract, and can either be paid their share in cash or store credit.

The store accepts any clothing in the age bracket as long as it has been freshly-laundered, and has no holes or stains.

Tamsin said the first month or so of business had been encouraging.

“The response has been really positive, and we only had Facebook advertising before we started.

“People always comment that

they think it’s a great idea.”

Tamsin and Felicity are both mothers, and had been waiting for the right time to start the business.

“We saw a gap in the market in Blenheim. You can buy highend wear or from a chain store in Blenheim, but nothing else,” Tamsin said.

Tamsin added one of the aims was to have overseas brands available, and so far the store had received clothes from Europe and the US from people who lived there and had come back to Blenheim.

Felicity said her family had a lot of excess baby clothing, as one of her children was in a Pavlik harness to realign her hips.

“She didn’t get to wear anything, and we thought ‘what could we do with it?’

“It’s nice to get some sort of return when you spend a lot of money on clothes for your kids.”

He said he felt the business opportunity would suit a local buyer.

“They would know people. I bought it as a local and I knew a lot of people.

Under new ownership, he said he hopes to be able to continue driving part-time, and help with the transition period.

“I put a lot of blood, sweat and tears into this company, and I’d be there for the new buyers.”

Mr Parker’s decision means he hopes to swap a steering wheel for a fishing line or a golf club, and lessen the load on wife Christine.

“I’m going on 67 and today everything is run by computers.

“I wasn’t bought up understanding them. Christine has been able to help me, but she also works full-time.

“Hopefully we can have a life

at 4:30 in the afternoon when we come home from work.”

Parky’s Charters has a varied clientele, from schoolchildren to sports groups to wedding parties.

Mr Parker said the secrets to keeping a happy bus lay in being friendly and chatty, and adapting to the passengers.

“It’s not like selling a fountain pen.

“Each trip has to be customised to that group.”

He said he had loved his time behind the wheel to date.

“Gee whiskers. Some of the trips I’ve done have been fantastic.

“Every job has a percentage, but I’ve had very few bad trips in my time.

“It’s just a great job.”

I’m not putting these undead dissers down, but they need to flag this pc way of parenting!

Committee member Catherine Donnelly and Blenheim Lions president Jim Thomas are asking people to donate their unwanted books to the Lions Book Fair.

She’s 94 and has 95 ‘hangers on’ Bethsaida Retirement Village resident Sylvia Baylis is 94 years old and has 94 grandchildren and great grandchildren.

She also has one great great grandchild, Lilly-Mae Larsen, aged just seven months who she met for the first time this month.

Five generations of Ms Baylis’ family came together at Bethsaida on July 4,

including her son Garry Larsen, granddaughter Julie-ann Kennedy, great granddaughter Averil Larsen, and Lilly-Mae, Averil’s daughter.

Ms Baylis, from Ashburton originally, has family members in England, Australia and the US. She will turn 95 later this year.

The Blenheim Lions Club and Beavertown Blenheim Lions are in need of books for their upcoming book fair.

This is the second annual book fair, to be held on August 15-17, and Blenheim Lions Club president Jim Thomas hopes the event will be as well supported as last year.

Although books were selling for just $1 and $2, the fair managed to raise $14,000 for Hope House, an organisation that assists pregnant teenagers.

This year’s takings will go to two different community charities.

“I also had a conversation with a man who reads dictionaries – I’m not kidding.

“It was a very interesting conversation!” she laughed.

Anyone who has finished with the books they bought last year can bring them back to be resold, she added.

Collection bins will be placed around town - in the supermarkets, at Mitre 10 Mega and at the Sun newspaper office on High Street, to make it easy for people to drop off their unwanted books.

Locals send good luck messages to athletes William Lowther, 13, of Rapaura School, was one of many to sign a New Zealand flag bound for the Commonwealth Games on Wednesday.

The flag was left in Countdown Blenheim, on Seymour Street, for people to leave their messages of support for the New Zealand team.

The flag was one of ten from around the country that departed for New Zealand headquarters in Glasgow yesterday.

Phil purchased the business last year and has made many exciting changes including reopening the workshop.

Originally from Cornwall, Phil is fully qualified and has been a mechanic for 26 years as well as being a member of the MTA. He is offering Warrant of Fitness checks on vehicles and motorcy-

cles, air conditioning re-gassing as well as a full range of vehicle repairs and servicing.

There is also a good stock of batteries and Maxxis tyres and with every tyre purchase Phil is all to happy to provide a complimentary fit and balance.

“The workshop has been really well supported and is getting busier every week.

“Our location in the Blenheim CBD means you can drop off their vehicle for a WOF or service, go and do some shopping for a couple of hours and come back to collect it.

“I aim for a fast turn around so customers can get back on the road as soon as possible,” he says.

Some of the sights and highlights of the rally so far.

Shanghai to London rally Noeline’s blog Day in Krasnoyarsk 30th May Woke up early, so no rushing.

The cars went off for a grease and oil change, and the girls went into town to change money at the bank.

In the bank you go into your own little cubicle, shut the door and do your transactions.

All very private and safe.

Just looked around shops, etc.

Found the travelling coffee place and had some nice coffee and cake.

Back at hotel by 1.30 to meet up with most of the people to go to the zoo.

Ron wasn't back so I stayed behind and thought we might go by taxi later.

Just stayed at the hotel then went for another walk.

Ron came back at 4.

He wasn't very happy again, feeling ready to give it all in.

Disappointed with the car.

After we talked it out I took him back up the road.

Boy, have I done some walking.

Yes, I know it’s good for me.

We ended up at an opera and the ballet which was quite good.

It went for an hour and a half and was good for the soul.

Then to Carl’s Jr for a burger.

It was good! Going to have a burger after the opera.

Not quite the done thing but we did end up in this little French restaurant for coffee and pastry.

Supermarket shopping Ron brought a bottle of whiskey!!!!!

Back to hotel bed around 12 o’clock.

31st May leaving Krasnoyarsk for Novosibirsk 7am start. John Kivkin's car didn’t start, but 20 mins later we were on the road.

Weather fine, 9 deg.

Had to stop suddenly but the brakes didn’t work!

Ron flicked off his seat belt, grabbed the hand brake and steered the car towards a Russian car as we didn’t want to hit one of ours. The car slid sideways and stopped just short of hitting the Russian car.

It was a quiet trip for a while after that and no, the whiskey didn’t come out!

We carried on though there was not much to see - just big open spaces of lush countryside.

Drove through another village and some kids came out and

mums and dads waved from the windows.

A number of us gave the children small gifts.

Just outside the village we were stopped for lunch when some local men came to see what we were up to.

They came back with a bottle of vodka and a block of fat!

Not sure about the fat.

Then the boy racers of the village came on their motor bikes, checked us out, took some photos and waved us off.

We had a few petrol stops, then we saw a big accident that was a three truck pile up.

It looked like it had happened only a few hours ago, and it didn’t look too good for the drivers.

We got to the hotel, parking right out front.

We weren't sure about having car right out the front of the hotel, but all was good.

We went up the road for dinner in an Irish looking pub.

The pork was good, but we waited too long.

Was tired and cranky, but we went for a walk and had an ice cream, hopping into bed at about 11pm.

It’s less than six days until the start of the Commonwealth Games, and the buzz hasn’t really kicked in yet.

Glasgow seems to have its affairs in order heading into the tournament. No delays on building, strikes or riots like in Brazil.

The last noteworthy news was that a virus had broken out in a small part of the workforce at the Athletes’ Village. Hopefully the runners don’t get the runs...credit colleagues for that one.

But back to serious business.

NETBALL The Tasman under-19 netball team have finished 13th at the national champs in Auckland.

The team, which featured a sizeable Marlborough contingent, won four of their six games at last week’s tournament.

PRESS CUP Marlborough Boys’ College head to Timaru to play Timaru Boys’ High School tomorrow.

SQUASH Marlborough’s eight-person Heaphy Shield team grabbed second at a meet held in Nelson last weekend.

The meet was won by the hosts with 21 games, with Marlborough grabbing 17 and the West Coast 10.

SWIMMING The first of the ‘Dive Right In’ swimming race series is being held this Sunday, July 20 from 5-6pm at Stadium 2000.

The only pre-requisite is the ability to swim a length of the 25m pool.

VOLLEYBALL The Marlborough Redbacks volleyball side was beaten 3-0 by Shirley in their game at Woodbourne Gym on Saturday.

The defeat means they missed out on qualifying for the national club championships next month.

KARTING Local karters William Exton and Daniel Bugler have placed well at the national schools championships, held in Palmerston North last weekend.

William placed fourth in the cadet raket class and sixth in the cadet rok class, while Daniel was 12th in the rotax heavies class.

Squash world number 41 and Marlborough Sportsperson of the Year Megan Craig is fulfilling a lifelong dream by heading to her first games.

She is seeded second among the New Zealand women, behind medal prospect Joelle King.

She may come up against fellow Marlborough Squash Rackets Club member Dorothy Boyce, who is representing Papua New Guinea.

When she takes to the platform 23-year-old Bailey Rogers will complete her journey from CrossFit to Commonwealth Games weightlifting.

Bryce Heem, who has played for Waitohi and the Tasman Makos,

has been selected for the rugby sevens team, while Olympic cycling bronze medallist Simon van Velthooven, whose family is from Marlborough, will also be featuring.

It is in van Velthooven where that contingent stands the best chance at a medal. New Zealand has a rich cycling history at the games, winning 16 golds, and 82 medals overall. They’ll definitely face tough competition from Great Britain, who have a serious stranglehold on the sport, and will be in front of their home crowd.

Thoms wins at nationals - off to Australia

By Adam Poulopoulos For a man who only took up darts recently, Michael Thoms (pictured) is certainly making a good fist of things.

Thoms, who plays for Clubs of Marlborough, took out the 18-25-yearold youth section at the Clubs New Zealand National Championships in Hornby last weekend.

His victory has earned him a trip to represent New Zealand for their darts test against Australia in late August.

The tournament is a precursor to the Sydney Masters, which will feature darts royalty from around the world.

Thoms said his meteoric rise began two years ago, when he made the step

from playing darts with his dad to competitive play.

He said he could not wait to rub shoulders with the greats.

“Meeting the big guys will be cool - the likes of Phil Taylor and Michael van Gerwen.”

Thoms is allowed to play in other open tournaments while in Australia.

Thoms beat 20 other challengers for the youth title, and had to play 10 games to win the trophy, with five in the instant knockout round.

He also played in the mixed doubles division with Dianne Guard, and they came ninth equal.

Cyclists tune up for grudge match

By Adam Poulopoulos Marlborough’s young cyclists are hard in training as they look to inflict another defeat on their Nelson counterparts.

A team of between 20 and 25 riders under the age of 19 will compete at the two-day Top of the South development meet at the start of next month.

The meet sees Marlborough and Nelson riders compete against each other over the weekend of Saturday, August 2.

The first day of the meet will be held this side of the hill, with the teams heading to Nelson for competition the next day.

Last year’s inaugural meet saw Marlborough win three of the four jerseys on offer.

While the rivalry is clear, the meet’s other main focus is developing young riders’ to be able to compete at a national level.

Spencer said Marlborough and Nelson would both select ‘A’ and ‘B’ teams for the meet.

“It’s good because the better young riders get harder competition.”

He said the meet would also teach riders about diet, recovery and technique.

“You have more than one stage each day,” Spencer said.

“They’ve got to eat and rest properly so they can race the next stage, and then the next day.”

The meet is the start of a busy period for Cycling Marlborough.

The Cuddon Two-Day Tour will see about 200 teenage riders converge on Blenheim from around the country at the end of August.

Southland hosts their junior tour and the Junior Track Carnival at the start of October.
