St John day

By Adam Poulopoulos St John Blenheim thought of a novel way to mark St John International Day yesterday - by taking shuttle users on a day trip.

The five shuttle users hopped in a van and headed to Picton for the trip yesterday.

There, they had tea and cake at the Picton Ambulance Centre, followed by lunch at Subway.

The minibus was provided by Marlborough Travel, with the St John health shuttle out and about.

St John Blenheim office administrator Helen Faulkner said it was a good way to mark the occasion.

“Usually it falls during our appeal week, but that’s now in April.

“It freed up this day and we wanted to mark it in a special way.

“It’s been really good that Marlborough Travel and Subway have come on board too.”

St John also announced plans to launch a new fundraising programme at a meeting last night.

Money raised will go towards new ambulance equipment.

St John Day is in honour of John the Baptist, and is an important day for the organisation.

“Not as cold as last year” Over 300 people braved the cold of the Picton water at the annual More FM Mid Winter Swim on Sunday.

Along with the 312 who took the plunge, spectators lined the foreshore for a glimpse of their loved ones.

More FM’s Natasha Knox, who led the swim out in her onesie, said she was happy with the event.

“It was quite a good turnout for us.

There were a lot of dads doing it with their kids this year.

“Everyone had a really good time.”

Natasha said she heard some repeat swimmers saying it was not as cold as in previous years.

Sixty prizes were also given away JJ Payne, Corbin David, 9, and Islay David, 10. at the event.

Back to reality for rescuer

By Adam Poulopoulos Life is getting back to normal for Marlborough Boys' College head boy Angus Pauley (pictured).

It has been two weeks since Angus and winemaker Jeremy McKenzie rescued 12-year-old Tenishya McIsaac from the swollen Taylor River.

Angus said even with all the media attention, things were not much different after the incident.

"I just came back to school the next day, and everything was back to normal.

"A lot of the boys congratulated me, which was cool, and my mates have been giving me a bit of stick, which has kept me grounded."

At school Angus has been busy organising the Combined Colleges Formal, playing football for MBC and looking at university options.

In between he also appeared on Seven Sharp.

"Jeremy and I both got to see Tenishya again," he said.

"She was really shy, but brave to go on camera."

He said he and Jeremy finally got a chance to catch up the day before.

"On the day he just came up to me and said 'hi. I'm Jeremy' before he had to leave.

"We talked about what happened, and all sorts of things.

He was head boy at St Bede's, and he does GODZone and other outdoor races, which is pretty amazing."

Angus's quick thinking and calmness under pressure drew widespread praise, and his principal Wayne Hegarty said those traits had contributed to his head boy selection.

"We got down to six on the shortlist, and they went to Top Branch Hut. "The boys were observed doing a range of activities, including one where we put them in a room for 20 minutes and asked them to form a plan to reduce bullying.

"His pragmatism and thought processes were so succinct and clear, and it kind of epitomised what he did at the river."

River safety discussed Extra bollards and chains may be installed on some key routes onto the Taylor River banks to improve flood safety.

The idea came during a meeting between Marlborough District Council managers, Marlborough Roads staff and senior police last Thursday, discussing whether a higher level of public warning was required in a flood situation.

Warning signs are already placed at the main footbridges in a flood situation.

The bollards and chains would be added in the next few weeks, but locations for them are still being discussed.

Council assets and services manager Mark Wheeler said the bollards and chains would help alleviate the risk posed by the dips and culverts on the floodway, which made it easy to misjudge the water level.

Marlborough area police commander Simon Feltham said it was impractical to close every point of the river, and schools and parents needed to make sure the children knew about the floodway area and the risks it poses.

TAVERN DEMOLISHED The Okaramio Tavern, just outside Havelock, was demolished this weekend after 109 years.

The tavern was sold to Okaramio farmer Jason Barnett, and the land will be used as a paddock.

By Celeste Lodewyk Mitch Alderlieste, winner of this year’s Stars In Your Eyes show, has become quite the celebrity among students at Blenheim School.

Prior to the show Mitch treated the students to a performance and after winning the show with his performance as Michael

Hutchence, he returned with a cheque for $1000 to donate to the school.

Principal Dina Ahradsen said the students “idolised” Mitch and now look to him as a role model.

“The students have followed Mitch throughout his Stars In Your Eyes journey and were

ecstatic when they heard he had won.

“Now when he comes to the school the kids all run to talk to him, they really look up to him,” she said.

The $1000 will be put toward computer software to support the students literacy and numeracy within the classroom.

One man was admitted to Wairau Hopsital with minor rib and shoulder injuries after crashing his vehicle at the Elevation, near Picton.

The vehicle, which was carrying a trailer, crashed into the highway barrier on Sunday.

TRACK CLOSED The lower section of Picton’s Karaka Point Track, from the lookout to the beach, has been temporarily closed by the Department of Conservation.

DOC are looking at ways to upgrade the track, with erosion making it unsafe to the public.

The track to the lookout remains open.

DOC is working towards having the track reopened by Christmas.

Dream wedding planning begins

By Celeste Lodewyk Michelle Cassidy and Kieran Hickman have been in love for 14 years, but after earthquakes destroyed their home in Ward last year the couple was forced to put their wedding plans aside.

Their ‘special’ day, which they hoped to share with their three children, friends and family, will now become a reality after winning Marlborough’s first Dream Wedding Giveaway.

Their wedding date is set for October 18 and the exciting part of preparing for their big day has officially begun.

The competition was launched by Blenheim wedding and events planner Alysha Hutchison who invited the community to nominate deserving couples to win a complete wedding package.

There were 36 nominations made with five making it to the final cut.

“The judges felt Michelle and Kieran were a genuine couple who kept their chins up despite everything that was thrown at them,” Alysha said.

It was one of Michelle’s friends who made the secret nomination and only revealed it to her when on a girl’s weekend away.

When she received a phone call to say they had won, Michelle and Kieran said they went into shock.

“We kept staring at each other in disbelief. It took days for it to sink in that we had won something as amazing as a whole wedding,” Michelle said.

The win came at the perfect time for the couple who have been engaged for six years, but put aside their wedding plans to start a family and later deal with an earthquake destroyed home.

“Kieran had bought a ring a month earlier and was waiting for the right time to ask, so when I told him I was pregnant with our first child, he handed me the ring and said ‘I better have this’.

“It was also the day of his 28th birthday and we were in the home that was earthquake damaged so the proposal was quite memorable,” she laughed.

After the first earthquake struck Marlborough in July last year, Michelle and Kieran’s home was the first in Marlborough to be red carded.

They have since been renting while finalising plans for their home to be rebuilt.

“Winning this competition has been such a positive thing for us and we are just so grateful to be given this opportunity.

“We both want to thank everyone who has donated to our wedding and Alysha for all her wonderful organising.

Picton crime spree Two brothers aged 17 and 21 years appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday facing multiple charges following a recent crime spree in Picton.

The pair face charges of burglary, unlawfully taking a motor vehicle, unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle, receiving stolen property and intentional damage.

A 22-year-old Picton woman is in custody after appearing in the Blenheim District Court yesterday on charges of receiving stolen property.

She faces joint charges with the brothers of unlawfully taking a motor vehicle and unlawfully interfering with a motor vehicle.

New holiday programme coming to town

By Adam Poulopoulos Relief teacher Kylie Andersen (pictured) wants to bring a new form of fun to Blenheim during the upcoming school holidays.

Mrs Andersen is starting a holiday programme based around Japanese culture, including activities like calligraphy, origami, Japanese cooking and basic language lessons.

She said she wanted to introduce people to the culture she loves, while bringing something different to the town.

"There are lots of holiday programmes but nothing like this.

"I'm a teacher, but holidays are for fun, and I want it to be fun."

Mrs Andersen's passion for Japanese culture began when she was in college in Christchurch.

"The older I get the more interested I get," she said.

The programme will be split into two MondayThursday blocks, starting from Monday, July 4.

Each day begins at 9am, and finishes at 1pm, and any student aged 8-13 is eligible.

Tua Marina school hall opened

By Adam Poulopoulos Students, staff and a variety of public figures attended the opening of the new Tua Marina School hall.

Mayor Alistair Sowman cut the ribbon on the hall, which was shifted from Koromiko School after it closed down at the end of 2012.

School principal Cheryl Wadworth said she was delighted the project had finally been concluded.

"It's very satisfying. It's been a long process and everyone contributed."

As Tua Marina's roll grew, the library became too small to use for assemblies.

For a while they used the community hall, but that meant students had to cross the road.

When Koromiko School shut, Tua Marina acted quickly.

"It was as if fate intervened," Ms Wadsworth said.

The hall was moved on the back of trucks last year, and three and a half months were spent doing it up.

Cunliffe promises regional focus

Ban on dogs stupid

Dear Ed, I was surprised and miffed at comments by a council representative suggesting that dog faeces around the Taylor River was the cause of unacceptable contamination levels.

Firstly the dogs do not poo in the river and are certainly not as numerous as the millions of salmon pooing in the sounds.

Second, would not the Arsenic from tanalised posts in the vineyards and the heavy use of pesticides, herbicides and fungicides over 40-50 years not at least be a contributing factor.

Thirdly, it is a fact that a farmed salmon out of its natural environment consumes its own body weight in antibiotics before it is consumed for food.

Food for thought.

Mr Morgan and Council need to get a life and stop blaming innocent animals who are a part of the natural way the system works to recycle nutrients back into the environment.

I'd take manure over chemicals anyday.

If choosing to save a dog over the council spokesman, I'd probably choose the dog, he loves unconditionally and is a positive influence.

Why no warning for fireworks?

As a responsible dog owner, and owner of two dogs that are terrified of fireworks I am angered that there was no notification of the fireworks that took place on Saturday night.

We arrived home that night to find one of our dogs had disappeared, later we were reunited with her as she had bolted from our property on Wither Road and was picked up by animal control in the middle of town, very distressed and with bleeding and cut up paws.

Thankfully she is now at home recovering, although the outcome could have been much worse.

I hope this letter is a reminder to people who in the future hold such events to spare a thought for the terrified animals out there, so that we as responsible owners can take measures to keep our pets safe.

Our heartfelt gratitude goes out to Wayne from animal control.

Fromm Switzerland to Marlborough Swiss winemaker Hatsch Kalberer has always had an passion for fine wine, and has spent over 30 years making a job out of that passion. He spoke to Adam Poulopoulos about his journey to Marlborough, and his thoughts on the wine industry.

In the Marlborough wine industry, which is full of colourful characters and big personalities, Hatsch Kalberer stands out.

He has carved out a successful career, working with Fromm on Godfrey Road since 1992, despite having no formal wine qualifications.

Hatsch was an only child born to parents living in a village in eastern Switzerland, not far from the Austria and Liechtenstein borders.

Hatsch said he always had a strong interest in wine and travel, and found combining the two enjoyable.

“I had a wine cellar before I had a driver’s licence, let alone a car.

“A lot of people spent their disposable income on cars and clothes, but I put it into wine and travel.”

He said he learned his craft by helping winemakers in his free time, and that he still has wine he bought nearly 40 years ago,

waiting to be drunk.

With the Cold War ready to erupt at any moment Hatsch decided to come to New Zealand in 1982, leaving behind family and his office job in the process.

“At the time it felt like something could go wrong,” he said.

“I decided to come to New Zealand because it was the furthest away. Any further and I would have been on the way home again.”

He spent nine years working in the cellar at Matawhero Wines in Gisborne, and met compatriot and Fromm Winery founder George Fromm, who was visiting the region, in 1989.

Hatsch discovered he and George had a lot in common. They come from adjacent villages in Switzerland, and Hatsch helped out at a winery in George’s village before coming to New Zealand.

“He put a proposition to me - if he invested

in a piece of land would I run the winery,” he said.

“The time was right, and Gisborne was kind of like a nine-year apprenticeship.”

Fromm was founded and Hatsch has stayed, even as George headed back to Switzerland.

The winery now produces about 100 tonnes a year with room for expansion.

“In a European context this is rather big for a privately-owned wine estate, while at many local wineries that’s a morning’s intake before smoko,” Hatsch said.

“We’re still a small winery, and the scale we’re on now keeps us very busy, with all the fine-tuning and attention to detail.”

Hatsch said it was an easy decision to stay small, with the winery’s staff picking each grape by hand.

“There’s more focus on drinkability and pleasure rather than hunting for awards.

“It’s more important to please the customer

than impress the wine judge, who just tastes the wine.”

About half of Fromm’s grapes are used to make their four pinot noir labels.

He said sometimes, wine and music overlapped.

“They’re played a lot in the winery.

“I still believe head-banging music would be harmful for our wine, even if it just puts those working with it in a nervous mood.”

It seems there will be more of that music in the winery, as Hatsch has no plans to leave.

“It’s an exciting project. I’m now focused solely on winemaking, and I’m happy to stay around.

“Marlborough has a very good environment for what we’re doing.”

Spend some time creating beautiful art The Marlborough Art Society has a regular programme of daytime art classes complimented with one-off evening or weekend courses throughout the year which members of the public might find interesting.

The daytime classes consist of Art Society members who meet at the studio at 204 High Street to paint or draw, and there is usually a facilitator or tutor associated with each group.

Myths about exercise Myth 1: There’s no point to exercising. I’m going to get old anyway.

Fact: Exercise and strength training helps you look and feel younger and stay active longer.

Regular physical activity lowers your risk for a variety of conditions, including Alzheimer’s and dementia, heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure, and obesity.

Myth 2: Older people shouldn’t exercise. They should save their strength and rest.

Fact: Research shows that a sedentary lifestyle is unhealthy for adults over 50. Inactivity often causes older adults to lose the ability to do things on their own and can lead to more hospitalizations, doctor visits, and use of medicines for illnesses.

Myth 3: Exercise puts me at risk of falling down.

Fact: Regular exercise, by building strength and stamina, prevents loss of bone mass and improves balance, actually reducing your risk of falling.

Chair workouts Ankles: Circle the ankle by drawing an imaginary circle with the toes, four times to the right, then four times to the left. Repeat exercise with left foot. This exercise lubricates the ankle joint.

Hips and rear: Squeeze the buttocks muscles together and release. Repeat four times.

Then sit on one hip and

tighten the abdominal muscles. Repeat four times, alternating right and left hip. Strong gluteal and hip muscles are important in walking.

Spine and neck: Sit up tall and lengthen the spine. Hook the right arm over the back of the right side of the chair and reach across the body with the left arm for spinal rotation.

With the arms in this position, look right as far back as the eyes will go. Look forward. Look left. Repeat the exercise on the left side. This exercise helps to keep the neck and spine flexible.

Myth 4: It’s too late. I’m already too old to start exercising.

Fact: You’re never too old to exercise! If you’ve never exercised before, or it’s been a while, start with light walking and other gentle activities.

Myth 5: I’m disabled. I can’t exercise sitting down.

Fact: Chair-bound people face special challenges but can lift light weights, stretch, and do chair aerobics to increase range of motion, improve muscle tone, and promote cardiovascular health.

Measles risk Nelson Marlborough Medical Officer of Health warns that Measles is likely to reach the South Island and unimmunised or partially immunised people are at the highest risk of catching the disease.

Measles is spreading in the North Island.

There have been 210 confirmed cases since December 2013, with the most recent outbreak in Hamilton at 77 confirmed cases - five of these were hospitalised.

If you have not been immunised and wish to be immunised it is still free for anyone who needs it, including adults.

Measles is a highly infectious virus that spreads easily through the air through breathing, coughing and sneezing.

If you think you have measles it is very important to phone and advise the doctor’s surgery before attending.

Ted Church Ted Church has come full circle in an industry he has ‘loved’ for most of his life and is now managing Seaview Wholesale Ltd on Main Street, in Blenheim.

Ted began his career in car sales with Terry Motors, but after opting for a change he opened a marine brokerage in Picton which he and his wife operated for 23 years.

They then relocated to Putararu where they opened a car museum and rock and roll cafe which was hugely successful, before moving back to Picton and purchasing Picton Marine Brokers.

Moli delighted with national experience

By Adam Poulopoulos Blenheim-raised Atunaisa Moli (pictured) is buzzing after his experience with the New Zealand team at the Junior World Rugby Championship.

Moli, who was Marlborough Boys’ College head boy and First XV captain last year, started four of New Zealand’s five games at loosehead prop.

The tournament was held in Auckland, North Harbour and Pukekohe earlier this month.

New Zealand finished third in the tournament, won by England.

Moli said he relished every moment of the tournament, which saw New Zealand play their five games in 18 days.

“It was awesome. The skills we learned were completely different.

“It was more professional and the recovery side of

He said the games against South Africa stuck out in his mind.

“They were really big, and it was good to be able to challenge them in the scrum area.

“The Irish in the last game too. They’d been preparing for six months and they knew their mix pretty well.”

Moli moved to Hamilton at the start of the year after signing with Waikato Rugby, and is studying sport and leisure at university too.

He said he was enjoying the experience.

“It’s like a bigger version of Blenheim. I get heaps of support, both for rugby and school.”

Moli is now preparing for the National Under-19 Rugby Tournament in Taupo, beginning in late September.

Blenheim-born hooker Quentin MacDonald has been signed by the Chiefs for next year’s Super Rugby season.

MacDonald was playing for Munster before returning to Blenheim recently.

He will play for the Makos in this year’s ITM Cup before linking up with the Chiefs.

RUGBY Halle Hamilton, 10, was among those competing at the Marlborough Gymnastics Championships at Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 over the weekend.

Rover Scouts club begins

By Adam Poulopoulos Movement has begun on the creation of a Marlborough Rover Scouts club.

A start-up meeting has already been held for the club, and others are being invited to register their interest now.

Anyone from the ages of 18-26 is eligible.

Scout leader Dean Marshall said the club would provide great opportunities for young people.

“For Marlborough it’s some-

thing new for youth to do, allowing them to contribute and make a difference.”

He said Rovers would be about outdoor activities, like tramping and fishing, community service projects and social events.

He said there would also be chances for Rovers to help at other Scout camps if they wished.
