Mother’s plea for help By Kristy Martin It is a bit hard to look after a toddler when you can’t even pick him up. Just ask solo mum Lisa Taylor, who recently had major surgery and now can’t do any basic household chores. Following a hernia operation at Wairau Hospital, Ms Taylor was told by doctors not to lift anything for one month, and yet was expected to go home and continue to be the sole carer for her 15-month-old son Toby, who can’t walk yet. She can’t put Toby into bed or place him in his high chair to feed him, and she can’t pick him up when he reaches out for her. Ms Taylor was given home help for a few hours a week, and says she can only get minimal childcare funding from Work and Income. She can’t understand why she can get someone to clean her house, but can’t get further assistance for the more important task of looking after her child. Continued page 2.
