Mother’s plea for help

By Kristy Martin It is a bit hard to look after a toddler when you can’t even pick him up.

Just ask solo mum Lisa Taylor, who recently had major surgery and now can’t do any basic household chores.

Following a hernia operation at Wairau Hospital, Ms Taylor was told by doctors not to lift anything for one month, and yet was expected to go home and continue to be the sole carer for her 15-month-old son Toby, who can’t walk yet.

She can’t put Toby into bed or place him in his high chair to feed him, and she can’t pick him up when he reaches out for her.

Ms Taylor was given home help for a few hours a week, and says she can only get minimal childcare funding from Work and Income.

She can’t understand why she can get someone to clean her house, but can’t get further assistance for the more important task of looking after her child.

“I got 25 staples in my stomach and was told not to lift anything, but I’ve got a very active 15-month-old son.

“What was I supposed to do with my child?

“I’ve got amazing friends who have been helping out and I really appreciate it, but they all work and have families of their own.”

Ms Taylor said she developed an incisional hernia following a caesarean section during Toby’s birth.

“I’ve got no family in Blenheim and I didn’t really understand the implications of

having surgery.”

She hired a childcare worker for the week after her surgery, but it cost her $270 and she says WINZ will only fund $35 of it.

“I found that really insulting.

“Yes, I’m on a benefit and I know people judge people on a benefit, but it was a medical emergency.”

Poor Toby doesn’t understand why his mother won’t pick him up and this breaks Ms Taylor’s heart.

“He reaches for me and I keep saying to him ‘Mummy’s got a sore tummy’.

“I’ve had moments where he’s sitting there just screaming because I can’t pick him up.

“Surely there are other people in my situation who need help too.”

A spokesman for Work and Income said Ms Taylor was currently receiving all the support she’s entitled to.

This included a childcare subsidy of nine hours a week.

“She is receiving the maximum rate based on her current circumstances and the medical advice we have been provided,” he said.

“We appreciate the situation she’s in and we’ve advised her to contact the DHB to see if there’s any further home help available on top of what she’s already receiving.”

Impact of going digital

By Kristy Martin E-readers and online book distributors have forced local book sellers to shift their focus away from fiction titles and instead concentrate on non-fiction.

Charlene Scott, owner of Bookworld in Blenheim, said she first noticed the effect the big online companies were having on her book sales about 18 months ago.

“E-readers are having an impact, but it’s more the big online distributors.

“People use us as a showroom now.

“They mine us for information and then say they are going to go online.

“Online is changing the way people shop and that is going to have a death knell on bricks and mortar stores.

“We have no control over it and you have days when it is absolutely demoralising.”

Ms Scott said part of the problem was that the government didn’t collect tax on small value imports, so people could buy books online from international companies.

Port chairman says numbers were flawed

The proposal to have the ferry terminals shifted to a new site, with the associated loss of hundreds of jobs in the town of Picton had led to two years of depressed business confidence and development in the Picton area and had a profound effect on property sales and prices there.

“But it’s no use bleating about things like that in the media,” he said last week.

“You have to play the issue not the individual.”

Behind the scenes, he and Port staff spent much time talking to the people concerned, including the Minister responsible, first Gerry Brownlee, then Steven Joyce.

He added, however, that he and the company were “chastised” by

They knew the numbers were flawed.

“And we knew what we were doing behind the scenes,” Ed said.

“The two key ‘flaws’ we saw were the original South Island freight volume growth estimates and the Government’s initial capital costs associated with staying in Picton,” Ed said.

“The flag had been raised that the plan was for the national good, but someone was still going to have to pay for the resiting, with the costs inevitably to be passed on to the consumers of the freight on the South island.”

The Port Company believe they were able to show it would have been pointless investing new money when, in Picton, they could accomplish all that will be needed without massive new capital investment.

“We demonstrated we had sufficient capacity to handle growth of potential trade when it comes, within our resources and without undue strain,” he said.

How this was handled was vital.

Blooming tall lily reaches 2 metres

By Kristy Martin A two-metre tall lily plant is dominating the backyard of one Blenheim property.

The beautiful alexandra lily has surprised and delighted its owners Nick Sowman and his carer Annette Nichols.

The pair said that while they enjoy working often in the garden at their Macey Crescent home, it barely took any skill for the lily to shoot up toward the heavens.

“They do their own thing, lilies,” Mr Sowman laughed.

“We just let them come up.”

The plant measures at just over 2m in height and has about 16 buds in various stages of bloom.

According to Mr Sowman, it gives the yard a pleasant smell, especially in the evenings.

“We’ve lived here for about 12 months “The woman who used to live here planted it.

“Last year it wasn’t as tall. I’d say about 180cm.

Tickets are still available from the Blenheim i-Site or from Ticketek, and cost $55.

Gates open at 10:30am, and wine sales stop at 5:30.

Babies, children and those under 18 are not allowed on site.

MCN window triumph Managed Computer Network (MCN) has walked away with six Marlborough Wine and Food Festival tickets after winning their. annual window display competition The competition sees local businesses and wineries join together to create window displays with a Festival theme.

MCN partnered with Hans Herzog Estate for the event, and beat 14 other businesses for the title.

Mitchell Sports and Charles Wiffen Wines was second and AvantiPlus and Saint Clair Family Estate third.

The competition is run by the Marlborough Chamber of Commerce.

ice cream awards The winners of the New Zealand Ice-Cream Awards will be announced in Blenheim on May 22.

Twelve categories will be judged upon, and entries finish on April 3.

The entrants will be judged in Auckland from April 14.

This is the 18th year the awards have been held.

Sir mark solomon speaks Maori tribal leader and prominent businessman Sir Mark Solomon will be speaking in Blenheim later this month.

New owners for Think Water

By Glenise Dreaver Pete James is a well-known face in the vineyards and on rural properties in Marlborough.

He was there at the start of the wine boom 18 years ago and his firm Waterworks has undertaken many irrigation projects in the province.

Now he and co-owner, wife Maryann, have moved to the next stage, becoming one of 49 members of the Australasian Think Water franchise, 14 of them in New Zealand.

The move has added a retail strand to their business.

They have moved to a new retail premises in Hutcheson Street, attached to Mayfield Motors.

“A really, really good location,” says Pete.

“And the off-street parking is great.”

While the official opening will be held in early March, the business is up and running already.

Pete says their new range of retail products includes pool chemicals, domestic sprinklers, irrigation equipment water treatment and filtration products and water pumps. They are there for the general public, as well as for tradespeople working in landscaping, horticulture and viticulture.

“But we’ll still be doing the project work that we started with in Waterworks as well.”

The expansion means that an increase of their existing staff of five is very much on the cards.

On Thursday last week, Think Water’s general manager, Bryan Ward from Brisbane, was visiting and said they were delighted to have the couple on the team.

“They’re very well-known in the irrigation business here.

“Having the franchise locally owned and operated is the key to what they do.

“They understand local needs well.”

An exhibition highlighting the Marlborough countryside has just begun at the Millenium Art Gallery.

The 16-painting exhibition, from Marlborough Plein Air painter Brian Badcock, (left) began on February 1.

Mr Badcock completed the paintings on site in locations

like the Awatere Valley and the Stronvar and Glazebrook sheep stations.

He said he wanted to show Marlborough was made up of more than just vineyards and the valley.

“I’m trusting people enjoy it.

I think it gives them a different perspective.

“One of the main reasons for the exhibition is that people around this area don’t realise it’s back country.

“There is some incredible country out there that is very beautiful.”

He hoped the aretwork would leave a lasting impression on those who viewed it.

“With an exhibition it should be a place where people come out edified and inspired.

“It’s really important to make art meaningful and relevant.”

The exhibition finishes on March 16.

I guess some people want everything for free. Those that have paying sites dont get everything for free (water/waste). If they did they might pass this on, there are also a lot of camping grounds that have free hot showers. how much more do you want for free.

‘Hitler’ intense and educational Review by Adam Poulopoulos.

It is not often you get a play with more acts than actors, but that is what happened in this play.

‘Hitler’ played its three shows last week at the Picton Little Theatre and featured just one actor - Kit Stevens.

Stevens performed two monologues - one as Hitler’s valet Heinz Linge and then as the Austrian dictator, having thoroughly researched the memoirs of several of those closest to Hitler.

On a dimly lit stage nearly bare of props, Stevens’ monologues explored the deep recesses of Hitler’s personal life, conveying a more balanced opinion of his life than a lot of other adaptatons would.

Through the monologues the audience were taught and entertained in equal measure.

Stevens’ next project is ‘Mirror,’ with wife Tiffany a play that features both male and female nudity.

Safe Air contracts Marlborough Airport-based Safe Air will continue to provide maintenance for New Zealand Defence Force aircraft.

Beginning the July this year, the $20 million a year deal will last until 2018.

The contract has been developed as part of a strategic alliance between the two.

Safe Air will perform maintenance on a variety of planes and UH-1H Iroquois helicopters.

Safe Air began as a freight airline, but has specialised in aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul since 1990.

The well dressed summer motorcyclist This season, the well-dressed motorcyclist is wearing… well, usually less. That’s what summer’s all about isn’t it – hot days, sea breezes; just about perfect for jandals, t-shirts and shorts.

Except not on yer bike mate! And yet it’s not an uncommon sight, and sadly a dangerous one too - especially for young riders, and scooter and moped riders. The amount of information and product available for motorcycle safety is endless, but today we’re just going to talk about three very valuable items – your head and your hands. Helmet and gloves are where all good riding gear starts.

Heads & Helmets The helmet of course is the law. And please note that in the eyes of the law, which are usually peering from behind a police officer’s sunnies, if your helmet isn’t done up, you’re not wearing a helmet – and it’s fine time. Helmets are the no-brainer solution to keeping your brain intact. Look for properly approved models from well-known manufacturers. Make sure they are snug (they will expand and shape to your head in time) and bright colours never hurt.

If a helmet has been dropped – with or without a head inside – its protective properties have been compromised and it should be replaced.

This also means that you should be very careful if purchasing a second-hand helmet. Helmets all have a limited use-by date as well. The highly-respected Snell Foundation recommends changing your helmet every five years. Tough decision if you like wearing expensive helmets, but think about it – your head, your call.

Remember also that your eyes must be protected while riding, either by a full-face helmet visor (strongly recommended), a good faceshield or goggles – all clean and undamaged.

We know what a bug hitting our face feels like at speed – imagine a stone.

Hands & Gloves Those who ride regularly know that good gloves are the second most important item of riding gear. They are not legally required so are often the most neglected and yet the most necessary items of safety equipment. Your hands control just about every aspect of riding your motorcycle or scooter and must stay warm and dry to maintain that control. A good day out

can be quickly spoiled if your hands get cold and control of your machine is compromised.

And then there’s the bad stuff. You don’t have to ride a bike to know that when you fall – anywhere - the first thing you do without thinking is put out your hands to break the fall. Now imagine that you’re falling not on the carpet or your lawn, but onto hard pavement, and then throw some speed into the equation. It is pretty much guaranteed that if you fall off your bike, your hands will be the first things that hit the ground or whatever you are running into or falling onto. And hands are very difficult things to repair – so please wear gloves.

Title slips from Freeman’s grasp

Back in the old days Wow...this can’t be... A Black Caps team playing well on a consistent basis? Well I never...

Save for Ravindra Jadeja’s heroics in Auckland our cricketers would have had a perfect 5-0 sweep of the ODI series with number one-ranked India during the last two weeks.

Now, like those in orange shirts bumbling around the boundary trying to take a one-handed catch, we have bumbled back on the Black Caps bandwagon.

To be fair, us cricket tragics who never hopped off are getting equally excited about our results and especially the performances.

These games got me reminiscing

By Daryl Shuttleworth Blenheim driver Dyson Freeman has given his all but has seen the South Island Formula Ford Class 2 Championship title move out of reach with one round to go.

Twenty-three year old Freeman was sitting third going into 2014 and had his sights set on stealing victory.

The title chase started in Invercargill.

Mechanical issues with Freeman’s car hindered his qualifying efforts, meaning he started down the grid.

Similar issues during race one meant Freeman had to retire early and see his competitors extend their lead in the championship.

Race two signaled a change in fortunes for Freeman. Steady rain made handling difficult but Freeman’s experience from years of karting saw him make amends for his race one misfortune. Freeman took the win in his class despite continued mechanical problems.

Race three started in the rain but the track dried through the race.

The car continued to misfire but Freeman fought on to claim second place in his class and leave Invercargill disappointed, but still third in the championship.

The championship moved to Timaru the following weekend, Freeman knew he could only win the title should Stephen Heffenan and Derek Wilson fail to finish.

Freeman dominated his class, winning all three races by a comfortable margin, even mixing it up with some of the class one drivers.

It was the perfect result but the championship slipped from Freeman’s grasp, with Heffenan doing enough to wrap up the championship with one round to spare.

With one round remaining Freeman’s aim is to hold second place in the championship, then turn his focus to the full New Zealand Formula Ford Championship next season.

Back then, Craig McMillan aka the Gladiator had made the biggest comeback since Lazarus, hitting our fastest ODI hundred in the BC era and getting Mike Hussey out in the same series.

Bondy, now known for his key role in a particularly dire ANZ commercial and as bowling coach, took an outrageous caughtand-bowled in the first game on his way to 5-23.

Finally, our bowling attack in the last ODI featured Tuffey, Franklin, Gillespie and Patel.

It seems seven years is a long time in cricket.

However, while we have just beaten the number 1 side in the world, the team we should watch out for is Sri Lanka.

They bundled us out of that 2007 tournament at the semifinal stage, by which time two-metre Peter was opening and Franklin and Patel’s 59-run tenth-wicket stand couldn’t save us from defeat.

The hard graft’s only just beginning for this side. Keep showing that togetherness and consistency and we might have a shot.

By Adam Poulopoulos The Marlborough Police recovered some important stolen property from Nelson in the weekend - the Hashes police cricket trophy.

Marlborough Police won the annual game against Nelson by 18 runs on a beautiful Saturday at Ngawhatu Park.

It is the first time since 2007 Marlborough Police have held the trophy.

Marlborough batted first in the 35-over game, scoring 237-9.

Opener Todd Nicholas anchored the innings with 74, with other handy contributions from Jason Hillgrove, Julian Lewis and Andrew Holdaway.

Marlborough would have felt confident during the traditional barbecue lunch but Nelson got off to a flyer in reply, before Mike Whitty broke through.

Nevertheless Nelson looked to be cruising to victory and needed about 65 runs from the last ten overs.

However, a batting collapse, which included three run outs in one over, saw Hillgrove take the last wicket with three overs to go, sparking exuberant celebrations from the

Constable and cricket captain Holdaway said the side was feeling a mixture of pleasure and pain on returning to work on Monday.

“The boys are very happy. Richard van Asch in particular was very happy, and particularly proud.

“Everyone’s feeling aches and pains hobbling around...a lot of guys played in the past and still think they can play like that!”

Holdaway said his side was nursing a series of injuries, including a pulled quadricep, pulled hamstring and various shoulder ailments caused from bowling after a long time without having done so.

Rules like two-pace run-ups and maximum eight-ball overs were enforced to speed the game up.

Holdaway said Whitty’s wicket-taking over of “Irish off spin” included seven wides and the wicket ball.

Marlborough will defend the Hashes in next year’s game, which will be held in Marlborough.
