“I knew there was a groundswell for change. But I didn’t realise I would lose over half the district council,� says Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman. “It’s certainly not business as usual,� he says of the elections that saw him lose eight of the thirteen-strong council.

Two members, Jill Bunting of the Blenheim Ward and Andrew Barker of Wairau Awatere, had stood down. Another four of the seven Blenheim councillors have been replaced, as have both the former Picton Ward councillors, leaving just five of the previous team.

Mr Sowman was pleased with his own provisional majority of almost 4000 when the second stage of results came through on Monday morning.

That was â&#x20AC;&#x153;pretty steadyâ&#x20AC;? in comparison to 2007 when 4467 votes were cast against him when he was opposed by two candidates.

Rates had proved to be a major election issue.

A zero rates increase, or close to it, had been suggested. â&#x20AC;?We will look at that.â&#x20AC;?

The level of transparency of council decision-making had been raised by some candidates.

That had been taken on board, though he felt it had been an overstated issue. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The vast bulk of council business is conducted in open forum. But very few members of the public come to meetings.

Two successful candidates had raised the methyl bromide issue in Picton and, Mr Sowman said, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m opposed to it as much as anybody. But we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the

They were waiting on the ERMA report due out in late October-early November. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It may be a question of legal use. If we did ban it under current rules, the forestry industry could well challenge the decision.â&#x20AC;?

Mr Sowman was not concerned about councilor roles on commitees, saying that while experience was lost, there were new opportunities. â&#x20AC;&#x153;They bring varied skills.

Training would be offered to new members however.

An informal meeting of councillors is set for Friday October 22, and the first full meeting is on Thursday October 28.

Before then, Mr Sowman has to meet each new councillor individually and discuss their background and experience before the committee roles are allocated. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s like presenting their CV.â&#x20AC;? Then he would present his recommendations to council.

They would also need to talk about their promises on the hustings, their aspirations and what was practical.

He also has to recommend a deputy mayor.

Despite Jamie Arbuckle, the unsuccessful mayoral contender, being the highest polling council candidate, Mr Sowman says it would be very hard to ask a firsttime person to be deputy mayor.

He did not attribute that to nay particular issues. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I think they were just not seen as listening to the community on various issues.â&#x20AC;?

There were a many tired faces out in the community today after frost fans, helicopters and many other frost busting efforts began in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Temperatures were reported to have dropped as low as -1.9 in some rural areas as Jack Frost paid a brief visit to Marlborough.

Mr Shepherd said out of the seven wind machines throughout Omaka Springs Estate, only five were activated last night. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I was out at 3am this morning as temperatures dipped as low as -0.5degrees and -1degrees, though they didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t stay at that point for long.â&#x20AC;? â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are lucky however where we are situated as there are other vineyards surrounding us with their wind machines active which keep the air marching down the valley,â&#x20AC;? he said.

Forrest Estate Wines vineyard manager Tim Alexander said for them, temperatures got down as low as minus 1.4 degrees which prompted the use of wind machines in North Bank and Brancott areas.

At Saint Clair, owner Neal Ibbotson said they had the wind machines going on Monday night, though the frosts were not particularly heavy in their vineyards. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s too early to tell if there is any damage, but we donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t expect any. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It is possible in other areas

of Marlborough there could be some damage though.â&#x20AC;?

Top award for Renwick Lion Dave McFarlane had a surprise sprung on him at the 40th anniversary celebration of the Blenheim Lions held on Monday October 10 at the Marlborough Club.

Thirty eight years a member, he was presented with a plaque marking the award of the Melvin Jones Fellowship, Lions highest international honour worldwide.

Dave confesses to having been â&#x20AC;&#x153;pretty involvedâ&#x20AC;? in all that time (his words).

His latest role was the organisation of the 2010 charity golf tournament that raised just over $3000 for the Brayshaw Park Vintage Farm Machinery Society.

Dave has held most positions on the board of directors â&#x20AC;&#x153;and Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve been recycled as president as wellâ&#x20AC;?.

Drug related charges There were 16 arrests over the weekend, starting on Friday with three drug-related offences.

At 11.55am a 43-year-old unemployed male was arrested for cultivating cannabis, manufacturing cannabis oil, and possession of equipment to cultivate cannabis. Fifteen minutes later, a 55-year-old unemployed male was arrested for possession of equipment for the cultivation of cannabis, while at 1.15pm a 40-year-old unemployed male was arrested for possession of cannabis, cultivating cannabis and breach of bail.

A 42-year-od female factory worker was arrested at 8.35am on a charge of failing to appear in court, while at 11.55pm a 16-year-old male student was arrested for assault after an incident at a Brewer Street address.

Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s major incident occurred in Henderson Street

at 10.25pm when a 41-year-old male shearer was arrested for driving whilst disqualified, drove with excess breath alcohol (759 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath) and failing to stop.

He was driving a Nissan vehicle which police attempted to stop.

However, it is alleged he continued driving approximately 100 metres down the road before pulling into a driveway. He left the vehicle and ran into the house.

Police entered the address and arrested him.

It was the second driving arrest that day as earlier, at 2pm, a 27-year-old unemployed male was arrested for driving whilst forbidden.

A 19-year-old unemployed female was arrested 7.15pm for breaching her bail conditions and at 8.10pm a 39-year-old male vineyard worker was also arrested for breach of bail.

There was a third arrest for

breach of bail at 10.45pm, when a 47-year-old male driver was apprehended.

At 11.30pm a 37-year-old male machine operator was arrested for male assaults female after an incident at a Picton address, while at 11.35pm an 18-year-old male student was arrested for breaching the liquor ban in the CBD. On Sunday at 2.05am a 33year-old unemployed male was arrested for breaching the liquor ban.

A 17-year-old unemployed male was arrested for shoplifting at 12.40pm after he allegedly stole clothing from The Warehouse .

Army takes over Havelock

By Celeste Lodewyk On lookers couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t get enough of the action last week as the New Zealand Army swooped upon Havelock and Woodbourne as part of a military exercise.

After evacuating participating Havelock homes and businesses, the Sun caught up with Privates Michael Douglas and Steve Rastid of the 2-1 Battalion, Bravo Company from Burnham Military Camp.

Standing guard on Main Road, Havelock both men were armed with guns loaded with blank rounds and the necessary equipment to deal with an emergency evacuation of civilians.

The exercise began October 10, with troops being dropped off at Woodbourne where they secured the fire station and set up an evacuee camp before travelling to Havelock to set up an informal camp.

Throughout the four day exercise troops had to respond to a range of emergency events including the evacuation of participating Havelock residents from their homes and businesses.

Private Douglas said it was part of a South Island wide NZ Army training exercise intended to simulate an evacuation of New Zealanders in a foreign country.

By May, Blenheim was suffering from drought with 84 points of rain reported in five months.

In June that year, Blenheim recorded the second highest air movement figures in New Zealand with 21,093 arrivals and departures.

Picton Wine Festival For five years the Picton Wine Club has been matching some of the best wine the region and country has to offer with magnificent morsels from Pictonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Le Cafe.

Now the club is gearing up for the first Picton Wine Festival, to celebrate its anniversary in style.

Sixteen wineries will present their top drops on November 5, at the Mercure Hotel, with free tastings and excellent knowledge about the wines on offer.

Le Cafeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Peter Schoni will recreate some of his best wine match morsels, for guests to taste.

Have music, will travel Anne and Rob Barrer talk to Glenise Dreaver news@blenheimsun.co.nz

At the start of 2010, NMIT programme leader Anne Barrer was made redundant from an academic career that had spanned thirty years of her life.

What seemed like the end of all she had known has now turned into the start of something very different as she and husband Rob extend themselves as internet-based musical entrepreneurs.

The overseas odyssey began when Rob, â&#x20AC;&#x153;farmer, sculptor, musician, artist and househusbandâ&#x20AC;? wrote a song called â&#x20AC;&#x153;Annies Bluesâ&#x20AC;? which was sung at her farewell. â&#x20AC;&#x153;It was an inspiration for me,â&#x20AC;? said Anne. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The lyrics suggested that I travel (â&#x20AC;&#x153;Been in this old town too long!â&#x20AC;?) and â&#x20AC;&#x153;Dip my toes in the ocean of pure delight!â&#x20AC;?

Jim Mora from Radio New Zealand heard about it, and featured Anne on a show.

And on Thursday last week, the couple â&#x20AC;&#x153;dipped their toesâ&#x20AC;? as they left on a month-long global journey.

In their luggage is the laptop, along with the three CDâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s that Rob and the coupleâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s sons Leo and Jake have put together. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are celebrating their completion by taking them around the world.â&#x20AC;?

The first port of call was the IAC (Independent Artists Community) internet music conference held in Santa Monica, Los Angeles between October 9-10.

This is to be followed by the Womex International Music Trade Fair in Copenhagen starting on October 27. â&#x20AC;&#x153;The overseas trip is also a chance for us to take hard copy CDs to industry promoters in the States and Europe as well as networking with our host site managers and our USA artists. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will also be meeting other online musician friends in London.â&#x20AC;?

Their three CDs are, she says, the result of three years hard graft: â&#x20AC;&#x153;Writing, composing, arranging, recording, engineering, etching, burning, and promoting plus design and artwork, and promotion through online radio stations and various websites.â&#x20AC;?

Her own role till now, she says has been â&#x20AC;&#x153;more the groupie. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Rob has always supported me in my career. Now itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s time for me to support himâ&#x20AC;?

The adventure had begun quietly when, in 2006, Rob, a singer/songwriter and guitarist, went on a Creative NZ funded hui held at St Arnaud for Top of the South Artists.

Anne said he networked with other artists and gained some skills there, learning to use the internet to distribute his art and music.

When Rob came home, he established three websites. The first was myspace, progressing to a domain silverwoodstudio.net, then spreading to Indie host site iacmusic.com, Youtube, Reverbenation and ezfolk.

Anne said these sites gave Rob the chance to promote the original Folk, Blues, Rock and World Fusion music of his sons Leo and Jake and their musical friends.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;Through trial and error (he basically taught himself how to put himself out there!) he learnt how to include videos and slide shows. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These gave his largely American and European listeners a taste of organic New Zealand sounds with visual images of original kiwi art, and the South Islandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s wilderness and coastlines.â&#x20AC;?

While the money earned has never been great, creative success followed this early work, with Rob and the boys winning three Indie IAC Golden Kayak Awards in 2008.

This was a catalyst for more recording and the creation of

20 internet radio stations playing the latest Indie music from around the world, promoting different genres and including New Zealand and Australian emerging artists.

When they get back there is going to be the pressing need to earn a real living. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our accountant will like to hear that!â&#x20AC;? says Anne.

But with the recording studio that Rob has set up already functional, they will be looking at ways of using that in some way. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Whatever it is, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s something fulfilling we will be doing together.â&#x20AC;?

As of October 9, Grant and Christine have been celebrating 10-years of being in business. â&#x20AC;&#x153;And what better way of marking the occasion than rewarding our customers,â&#x20AC;? Christine smiles.

The husband and wife team moved their family to Havelock with the intention of purchasing their first business.

Originally from Wellington, Christine admits it took a little time to adjust from leaving the city life behind, but have loved every minute of their time in Marlborough. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We were welcomed with open arms by the community who have ever since continued to support

us, Havelock is a fantastic place to be,â&#x20AC;? she says.

Since purchasing the business, Grant and Christine have been slowly building up the business to incorporate a greater range of products. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We have made a point of keeping the stock levels high, even through winter. At times it has been a challenge to manage this through the quieter times but we feel the business has done well,â&#x20AC;? they say.

Going the extra mile, staff put together and deliver grocery orders from Sounds residents to the Mail Boat three times a week.

Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more, customers who arrive by boat and shop at the supermarket are personally driven back to their boat with their groceries. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about helping people

out, making it easier for them to do their shopping and giving them with a memorable and pleasant experience,â&#x20AC;? Christine says.

Grant and Christine also strongly believe in giving employment opportunities to students. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There are many people in the area who have had their first job with us,â&#x20AC;? Christine laughs.

Fit grannies on grass

By Celeste Lodewyk The streets of Blenheim will be alive with the sound of marching feet this Friday as more than 500 South Island leisure marchers descend upon Blenheim for an eventful weekend.

A total of 41 teams including three of our own will spend the weekend performing as part of the annual South Island Leisure Marchers Day.Fun Seekers Leisure marcher Val Alcorn says the public is in for a great show.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;We will be street marching this Friday from 3pm starting at Number One Shoe Warehouse and finishing at the Clubs of Marlborough. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Then on Saturday the event gets underway at the Marlborough Lines Stadium 2000 at 9am where all 41 teams will be marching,â&#x20AC;? she says.

The public is invited to attend Saturdayâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s marching event at the stadium, entry is free for all.

of New Zealand wide teams of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;matureâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; ladies which meet at various events hosted throughout the country. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We are also known as fit grannies on grass,â&#x20AC;? Val laughs.

New start and sad ending The new President of the Marlborough Multicultural Group (MMG), Stuart Greif, reports that the Group is still serving the Community even after more than 20-years.

Itsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; aims and objectives are to promote acceptance of difference in culture, religion, and tradition within New Zealand in the spirit of multiculturalism.

The Group works closely with the Migrant Centre and provides a focal point for new migrants once they no longer need help from the Migrant Centre.

The Group, made up of unpaid volunteers from several nationalities organizes social occasions throughout the year to which the public at large is invited to attend.

The next social occasion is a potluck dinner on October 30.

The MMG last week was saddened to learn of the death of one of its founders, Mrs. Elsie Walker at the age of 89-years.

Elsie is the English equivalent of Else. Else was born in Duesseldorf, Germany in 1920 and was educated in Austria.

Her parents as well as Else were determined anti-Nazis who hid Jews.

Both her parents ended up in Concentration Camps, where her father died.

Her mother survived and lived for another 14-years.

Picton spirit shines in kids project

By Celeste Lodewyk Putting together 30 shoeboxes of gifts and necessary items for underprivileged children has been a fun and rewarding project for a group of Picton women.

For the third year in a row, Margaret Harris, Rachel Barrat, Lauraine Young and Gyllian McDonald have been getting together once a month to make 30 Christmas gift boxes as part of Operation Christmas Child.

On Monday Margaret delivered the boxes to the Sun office, adding them to the growing pile of generous donations from the community.

With six categories for gift ideas, the group purchased and handmade items such as clothing, school books, toys, jewellery and hygiene products to name a few to be sent away overseas to underprivileged countries. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Our kids get so much here in New Zealand,â&#x20AC;? says Margaret. â&#x20AC;&#x153;These kids would love receiving a gift as simple as a ball or bag of marbles; itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all about

making them feel loved and remembered at Christmas time.â&#x20AC;?

Concentrating on ages 10-14-years, the number of gift boxes has grown each year and the group hopes that next year will be bigger and better yet again. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Between us we split

The Baby Whisperer is coming.

Thanks to the efforts of three local business women, Sharlene Poole (New Zealandâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Baby Whisperer) will be coming to Blenheim for one night only, Thursday November 4.

Sharlene is a postnatal advisor, offering parents nationwide her guidance and advice to help make their first twelve months a more comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Cherubs Childrenswear owner Lynda Butt was fielding numerous inquiries for Sharleneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Baby Whisperer DVD, and after contacting Heavens Above Personal Assistant and Events Co-Ordinator Carol Jacques, the decision was made to try

and source the DVD. An instructional DVD titled Sharlene Poole Baby Whispering Newborns 0-3 months, outlines techniques that she teaches in her one on one sessions with newborns.

After some communication with Sharleneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s support staff

by Carol, Heavens Above is now the exclusive Blenheim stockist of the DVD. Whatâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more, Carol along with Lynda and Educarents Blenheim Co-Ordinator Miranda McFarlane have organised for Sharlene to hold a seminar evening.

The DVD will be available for purchase and proceeds from sales on the night will be donated to S.A.N.D.S Marlborough as the ladies

chosen local charity.

As well as the seminar, tickets are also being sold for private sessions with Sharlene. Five have been offered and only three remain.

Dealing with the grief of losing a baby is not something that ends at a fixed point in time, the message for this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s International Baby Loss Awareness Week.

Sadly Marlborough families are affected every year by the

loss of a baby or infant.

To commemorate the memories of past and present losses there will be a public memorial service held at the Cloudy Bay Riverside Chapel on Friday October 15 at 6pm.

The public service is being organised by Sands Marlborough and aims at encouraging families to bring along a photo, poem or item in memory of their babies.

Sands (Stillbirth and Newborn

Death Support) is a non profit voluntary organisation which provides a support network made up of parents and families who have already experienced the death of a baby and can offer advice and most important - a listening ear.

International Baby Loss Awareness Week takes place from October 9 to 15 every year in honour of the babies and infants who die across the country each year.

Local man Pete McKechie was driving home one night, considering his future career options when he decided to action a life-long goal of becoming self employed.

With experience working in different areas of the engineering and automotive industries, he set about using his skills and knowledge to form Motor-Kanix and Light Engineering Ltd. This was five-years ago and looking back, Pete is pleased with the businessâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth and development. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I built this business from scratch,â&#x20AC;? Pete explains. â&#x20AC;&#x153;There was a niche in the market for heavy vehicle wheel alignments in Marlborough so it began as a mobile service from home.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;As time has gone on my clientele base has increased and demand for added automotive and engineering services grew, so I opened the workshop on Main Street over a year ago and it has been going from strength to strength ever since,â&#x20AC;? he says.

Originally from Dunedin, Pete was only young when he moved to Marlborough and made it home.

During the past 12-years Pete has worked in heavy fabrication and auto repairs and servicing. He has also worked for large companies such as Beaurepairs and Mag â&#x20AC;&#x2122;n Turbo.

After brief intervals living away from Marlborough Pete returned with the intention

of one day becoming self employed. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I started the business with a heavy transport wheel alignment system and from there have diversified to incorporate a 24 hour mobile repair and breakdown service, light engineering work and general auto repairs,â&#x20AC;? he says. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Since having the workshop I have really enjoyed meeting new people and prided in providing a good and reliable service, so people will come back,â&#x20AC;? he smiles.

Wairau Rowing Club celebrates 100-years Celebrating a significant milestone this year is the Wairau Rowing Club.

Marking this occasion the club will be hosting weekend celebrations on November 19, 20 and 21.

To make this celebration a true success, present members are calling for former club members to register for the centenary.

Celebrations will begin with an informal evening get together on November 19 at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

A picnic and regatta will be held on the River at the Club Sheds the following day and offers a great opportunity for past and present rowers to engage in a row over a 350m course and reminisce about how good we all were.

Later that night a formal dinner will be held at the Marlborough

Convention Centre where presentation of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;Red Coatsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; will be made to Club members who have recently won New Zealand Championship titles.

Guest speaker will be Mahe Drysdale who will have just competed at the World Rowing Championships at Karapiro.

The weekend wraps up with brunch at the Rowing Club on Sunday morning. Cost for the weekend is $165.

The Wairau Rowing Club was established on the 27th July 1910 by early settlers of the Grovetown and surrounding area. Today many descendants of those founding fathers are proud members of the Wairau Rowing Club.
