Story and photos by Kristy Martin With Daylight Saving starting this Sunday, firefighters are once again urging people to check their smoke alarms when they wind their clocks forward.

“The sad reality is that most house fires we get called to don’t have working smoke alarms,” said Rob Dalton, Blenheim Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer (pictured).

“People can get a bit blasé about these things.”

Yesterday a house on Henderson Street was completely gutted by fire and while its residents managed to escape, they lost everything.

The fire broke out just after 1pm causing the occupants, a woman and her young children, to flee.

It is believed the fire began in a bedroom, but neighbours said within a minute the entire house was up in flames.

Fire alarms save lives Continued from page 1 “They were pretty hysterical, the kids were screaming,” said Anthony McKenzie, from two doors down.

“She (the mother) was in tears, but very quiet.”

It is not yet known whether the house had working smoke alarms.

Mr Dalton said smoke alarms should be installed in every bedroom, hallway and living area of a house and can be tested easily by pressing the test button.

Any smoke alarms nearing 10 years of age should be replaced.

He said it was common for people to remove smoke alarm batteries if the sound went off while they were cooking.

But with the newer style photoelectric smoke alarms, which detect the sight of smoke rather than the smell, false alarms should not be a problem.

Smoke alarms are easy to install, but for elderly or immobile people who need assistance, the fire service can do it for them.

Picton landslip makes national news

By Glenise Dreaver Picton’s 200 cubic metre landslip was the second lead on TV1’s 8am news yesterday.

It was announced that a dozen residents of Wellington Street who spent a night away from home after being evacuated on Wednesday were now able to return.

By 4.30pm on Wednesday, staff of Crafar Crouch had cleared the soil and debris in the street, which stretches up the road behind the St Joseph’s Church Presbytery. The nine affected homes were the last

ones at the top of the street.

After an engineer’s inspection, residents were advised not to return on Wednesday and the road stayed closed overnight.

Marlborough District Council Assets and Services manager Mark Wheeler said the rain stopped on Wednesday night and those affected were able to return after a Picton-based geotechnical engineer was consulted again on Thursday morning.

No beer for thirsty thieves Police are searching for offenders who tried to force open the doors at Blenheim’s Criterion Hotel on the night of September 24.

The unknown suspects used tools to try and force the doors but failed to gain entry to the Market Street building.

Police are reviewing CCTV footage from the cameras located in the CBD.

Featuring fun for the whole family, including games, market stalls, delicious food and wine, the only thing that could hamper the event is the weather.

The Spring Honey Festival is a

joint venture between Hunter’s Wines and The Honey Company, who wanted to put on a fun, oldfashioned festival for the entire community.

Hunter’s Wines’ marketing coordinator Sarah McDermid said the festival needed to have a distinctly Marlborough theme suitable for families that, for once, wasn’t centred on wine.

Hunter’s then teamed up with The Honey Company and the rest, as they say, is history.

The Spring Honey Festival will feature a host of kids’ activities like pin the bee on the flower, egg and spoon races, colouring competitions and face painting.

There will also be live entertainment, wine tastings, fudge, honey crepes and Hunter’s chef Alain

Hauswirth will be cooking up a range of gourmet honey-inspired meals in the resaurant.

Prizes will go to the best honeyinspired costumes.

The festival is at Hunter’s Wines on Rapaura Road from 10am4pm.

Entry is free, but there will be a gold coin donation for games.

Minister welcomes seal killing conviction Conservation Minister Dr Nick Smith is welcoming yesterday’s conviction of a Blenheim man over the killing of 23 New Zealand fur seals on the Kaikoura coast in late 2010.

Thirty-eight-year-old Jemaal Large was convicted on two charges of wilfully illtreating animals.

Mr Large did not dispute that he, along with co-offender Jason Godsiff, who has already been sentenced for his part in the attack, killed the seals but had pleaded not-guilty to ill-treating the animals.

The fur seals, including some newborn pups, were beaten to death with a galvanised steel pipe at the Ohau Point seal colony in

“The men were charged under the Animal Welfare Act because of the tougher penalties available under this Act compared to the Marine Mammal Protection Act. This reflects the seriousness of the attack and the large number of seals killed,” Dr Smith said.

Another Blenheim building that failed to meet earthquake standards has been demolished.

A Marlborough Lines building on Sinclair Street came down last week and the company’s managing director Ken Forrest said the site would be landscaped but no new structure would go up.

“We’ll landscape the area and tidy it up, making it attractive,” he said.

Mr Forrest said the building was most recently used for storage.

“It hasn’t been used in a while and since the earthquakes it had to be demolished because it failed to meet required earthquake standards.”

Holiday farm safety With school holidays starting today, Marlborough farmers are reminded to be vigilant when it comes to children and farm safety.

“Our home is our workplace and when the children are home from school, we need to be more alert to hazards around the farm,” says Jeanette Maxwell, Federated Farmers health and safety spokesperson.

“Last year we had 14 fatalities and 408 serious injuries on farm.”

Restore cherished leather Story and photo

by Kristy Martin It is seeing the joy on people’s faces when their cherished leather goods have been rejuvenated that makes work all the more satisfying for Ken and Jude Eustace.

Ken and Jude, owners of Leather Restorations at Spring Creek, are able to make old leather furniture, car seats, bags and shoes look near new again.

It can be a meticulous process, and one the pair lovingly and painstakingly undertake, but they are both incredibly passionate about what they do.

“We have been involved with leather for about six years now and we mainly do leather furniture,” Jude explained.

“We don’t do leather jackets or saddles at this time, but we can do things like shoes and bags.

“We can also change the colour of shoes, which is great for weddings.”

The couple previously owned Jae Services, which involved carpet cleaning, upholstery and flood restoration, and this is where their passion for reviving

They started up Leather Restorations, a part-time enterprise, about a year ago, but Jude recently gave up her other job to focus solely on it, as it is her passion.

Ken hopes to also make full-

The crafty twosome are able to clean and revive items that are worn out, faded or sun damaged and those that have nicks, abrasions or cat scratches.

“People don’t realise that the quality of leather produced today is not as good as it once was,” said Ken. “We give people a chance to keep their beloved items that they would otherwise throw out.”

Picton museum reapplies for whaling extension The Picton Heritage and Whaling Museum has reapplied for a resource consent for a whaling wing extension on the foreshore.

The application is for the construction of a two storey, 18 x 12m building to display two whaling craft gifted to the museum, the whale chaser Cachalot and Ron Perano’s replica whale boat Swiftsure.

The extension would also allow better display of the museum’s whaling artefacts.

This revised submission comes after an earlier application for a $1m extension was refused largely based on section 104 of the Resource Management Act. Independent commissioner Richard Fowler said in October last year it clashed

Symptom checker phone app launch A new iPhone app is helping people who feel unwell to self diagnose.

Health Minister Tony Ryall said the new Healthline symptom checker phone application, launched this week, was helping New Zealanders access free health advice at the touch of a button.

The symptom checker can be downloaded for free from iTunes.

“People can enter their symptoms by either selecting the area on a body map or searching by name from a list, such as leg injury.

“Depending on the type of injury or illness and the severity of the symptoms, the courses of action may be calling an ambulance, seeing a doctor within 24 hours or information on how to manage the condition at home.

“When you download the symptom checker you can add your GP’s phone number.

Locals roll up their sleeves for Spring Clean project Local members of the New Zealand Motor Caravan Association (NZMCA) rolled up their sleeves to clean up the Wairau Diversion as part of this month’s nationwide Spring Clean project.

“The Spring Clean is a practical way for members to not only give back to our community but also to reinforce our commitment to the environment,” said Kevin Addley, NZMCA’s Marlborough

area chairman.

“As an organisation we’re proud of our beautiful country and we recognise our responsibility to play a part in keeping it that way.”

He says the environmentally conscious members chose the Wairau Diversion for the Spring Clean because the area was a popular spot with locals and visitors for fishing throughout the year, especially during the whitebait season.

I am a current NMDHB member, a member of the Disability Support Advisory Committee and Disability Support Services Steering Group.

After an accident in 2006 which left me paralysed, I have gained

extensive experience in the health system.

I bring to the board strong local knowledge and an awareness of what it’s like to be a patient.

Throughout this term on the DHB, I have been a staunch

advocate for the maintenance of health services throughout the region.

I have also sought to promote discussion and raise awareness about older people’s health issues.

In my role establishing, and then managing Marlborough’s hospice and palliative care service I came to fully appreciate Marlborough’s unique and generous community spirit and their need for a quality health service.

I am currently an appointed member of the Community & Public Health Advisory Committee for NMDHB. I support

closer ties between community and hospital based services so the people of Marlborough, Nelson and Tasman get timely care as close to their home as possible.

Clean water for Joseph’s well A concert to raise money for a small Kenyan village was a resounding success, collecting almost $4000.

Featuring local bands, singers and dancers, the St Mary’s Youth Group Concert for Joseph’s Well last Friday generated almost half of the money needed to build a borehole well in the small rural village of Emali, Kenya.

This is where St Mary’s foster child Joseph Nzisia lives with his large family.

“The night raised $3038, and with extra donations the total stands at $3938,” said St Mary’s youth minister Mieke Hilhorst.

“This is nearly half way to our goal of $9000.”

The concert, held at St Mary’s Parish Centre in Blenheim, showcased the wide variety of talent of Youth Group members and others from around Blenheim.

“First time auctioneer Maurice Davies did well to keep the auction lively with a huge array of items donated by St Mary’s parishoners and local businesses, ranging from a kayak to a barrel of slime for the kids to bid on.

“Parents donated a tonne of baking for the supper, along with local businesses New World, and Brumbies.”

St Mary’s Youth Group have been sponsoring Joseph through Childfund for the last 10 years.

Local success at Masters Rowing Eighty one-year-old Brian Hutchison from the Blenheim Rowing Club was the oldest competitor to take on the New Zealand Masters Rowing Championships held at Twizel last weekend.

This was out of a total of 290 rowers contesting 85 events over the two days.

Competitors came from all across New Zealand and Australia, including a large number of ex-elite and international rowers.

Eight rowers and one coach from the Blenheim Rowing Club competed, their ages ranging from 34 to 81.

The youngest competitor in the event was 29-year-old Edwina Hooke from Sydney.

Competition was very high with some very close racing.

It has been a successful season for Blenheim Rowing Club, who competed at the South Island Masters Regatta in June, where they were named Top Overall Club for the second consecutive year.

Pigeon results Blenheim racing pigeon club held it’s third race of the season last Saturday from Christchurch, a straight line distance of 242 km.

The 85 birds were liberated at 8.30am along with birds from the Kapiti Coast area and although the weather was relatively fine at the liberation point, conditions deteriorated the closer the birds got to home.

The first arrival took 4 hours 15 minutes and arrived at the loft of Carl Kirkwood of Spring Creek with a velocity of 950.04 metres per minute, followed closely by a bird from the loft of Donald Morrison also of Spring Creek taking 2nd position with a velocity of 945.06 mpm.

Joan Webb of central Blenheim also had a good fly gaining 3rd with her bird achieving 910.92 mpm, and young James Mc Ilroy was well pleased with his bird into 4th place with a velocity of 896.99 mpm.

They won, we lost Yesterday Oracle Team USA beat Emirates Team New Zealand by 44 seconds, clinching their win in the 34th America’s Cup with a final score of 9-8.

In the past week, Oracle improved its boatspeed to 30-32 knots upwind, an incredible performance never seen before in America’s Cup yachting.

Pre-season build up The track is nearing the end of its upgrade, cars are painted and engines are tuned.

The beginning of the 2013/2014 Eastern States Speedway season is nearly upon us and the public is invited to a pre-season sneak peak.

There will be a Pre-Season Expo held this Sunday at the Blenheim School grounds from 11am to 3pm.

This is give the public a chance to view the cars racing this season, meet the drivers and teams plus be in to win some ticket giveaways on the day.

Also on display will be the fastest speedway saloon in New Zealand, as well as the fastest corvette in the world, courtesy of Marlborough Muscle Car Museum.

Bring along the whole family, kids can grab a poster, enjoy a sausage sizzle and be part of the exciting lead up to the season’s opening night on Saturday, October 26 at 7pm.

Waterlea harness trials The smart pacer Lifesofine returned to the trials at Waterlea on Saturday run by the Marlborough O.T.B.Assn and showed he is ready for another successful season for his trainers Mike and Pat O’Brien. A winner of five races last season the Live Or Die five year old easily won the heat for 1 to 5 wins pacers. Driven by Brent Weaver trailed at the back of the field early but once his driver asked him improve he quickly looped the field and scored by five lengths in 3m 06.27 for the 2400m mobile start raced on a slushy track during a downpour. The gelding looks in capital condition and will improve further with the run. The O’Brien’s also harnessed up the placegetters, Prime Legal and Beckinsale

second and third respectively.
