Eighty gallons of soup By Glenise Dreaver Pete Hydes (pictured) of Blenheim decided to try growing large pumpkins this year. He left four on the vine (judging that a single 400kg specimen was not what he really wanted) . He has already dealt to the two smaller ones. One, a mere 41kg, was donated to the Salvation Army who made 80 gallons of pumpkin soup with it. (It was voted delicious too). The other was given in pieces. Two pumpkins were very large and the one he cut today, which was on display in his Queen Street service station, featured in The Sun in April, weighed 64.8 kilos. Surprisingly, it needed only a breadknife to cut. Half is to be donated to the Women’s Refuge. The other half, as well as the remaining giant, will be distributed in the community.
