Brides of the year Victoria Raeburn wins title for 2013

Story by Celeste Lodewyk “Did they just call my name? I don’t believe it!”

This was the initial reaction of Victoria Raeburn (nee Saunders) who won the 2013 Beavertown Blenheim Lions Bride of the Year Show on Saturday night.

Victoria was one of 19 brides in this year’s show. Runners up were Angelea Stanton in second place, Ashlyn Waaka-Iraia in third place, Michelle Butt the ‘Audience Choice’, Emma Camillo Nunes as ‘Miss Photogenic’ and Rebecca Baker as the ‘$300 lucky draw winner’.

The Wellington woman confessed to being “more nervous than on her wedding day” and did not believe she had a chance of winning.

“When I saw how beautiful all the other brides were I thought I had no chance,” she laughed.

“I didn’t enter to win, I wanted to get out of my comfort zone and experience something new and different.”

Victoria married husband Paul at the Old St Mary’s Convent in Blenheim and held her reception at Wither Hills Winery.

Returning to marry in Marlborough was something Victoria always knew she would do as she has strong family ties to the region.

“Blenheim is my second home so there was never any other option,”

she said.

Victoria’s gown was made by Wellington designer Anne Scott who had also made gowns for other family members.

It was getting back into her gown and “reliving her day” that was the reason she entered the show.

“What I loved the most was wearing my dress and getting dolled up again. What made the day even better were all the other gorgeous brides. They were so lovely and

we ended up exchanging numbers so we can meet up again,” Victoria said.

Now home Victoria is “back to reality” working as the organisational development manager of HRT at FMG Rural Insurance.

“My husband has nicknamed me Bride of the Year and asked if I would wear my sash to work,” she laughed.

Organiser Carol Taylor said the show drew a good crowd and the

audience was very supportive of the brides.

“The real highlight of the night was seeing all the brides come out on the stage and seeing how supportive they were of the winners.

“One theme I did notice this year was some of the brides wearing coloured shoes which matched their bridesmaids’ dresses. There were some very unique and beautiful styles,” Carol said.

Rain clears to make way for polar blast Story and photo by Kat Duggan Marlborough residents should prepare for a cold winter blast this weekend, after seeing off the rain that hammered the region early this week.

MetService media and communications meteorologist Daniel Corbett said today would be the transition day between the weather events, with a polar blast expected on Thursday and Friday.

“In Marlborough I wouldn’t rule out seeing heavy showers with hail or sleet,” he said.

Snow was expected to reach snow level in Kaikoura, with significant snow fall expected from Kaikoura to North Canterbury.

Blenheim was expected to reach a high on 7C on Thursday and 6C on Friday, with both Saturday and Sunday night getting right down to -3C. He warned motorists should be careful driving on higher roads, or if they were heading south towards Kaikoura.

Marlborough District Council assets

and services manager, Mark Wheeler, said the council was more worried about the cold blast expected to hit the region than the rain over the past few days.

“We’re more worried about the snow forecast, down to 200m, which could cause problems on the higher roads,” he said.

Mr Wheeler said Marlborough Roads would be monitoring this.

Nearly 50mm of rain fell between Saturday and Monday, causing river levels to rise in the region, flooding paths and the amphitheatre in town. “[The Taylor River] is a floodway,” Mr Wheeler said.

“It was always known when we put the paths and works down by Raupo there that it would flood, and it’s designed to cope with that.”

Mr Corbett said 72mm of rain had fallen in Blenheim for the month of June until yesterday.

The mean rainfall for June was 78mm.

New citizens Twenty one Marlborough people will be granted New Zealand citizenship in a ceremony in the Council Chambers on Friday June 21 at 3.30 pm.

The Parent and Child Expo held on Sunday attracted nearly 800 people.

Close to 800 flock to Expo Story and photos by Celeste Lodewyk The rain did not deter the many families who went along to Sunday’s Parent and Child Expo at the Marlborough Convention Centre.

Organised by the Marlborough Parent Centre, just under 800 people flocked to the Expo where they browsed the many products, services and parenting information displayed.

Children took advantage of the messy play, free balloons, facepainting and bouncy castle while parents shopped and spoke to the site holders showcasing everything from childcare, beauty and health, to retail and finance.

Expo co-ordinator Hetty Kirby said the

overall success of the Expo was fantastic despite the heavy rain keeping some people away.

“We were really pleased with the turn out. It was great seeing the young children running around, the delight when they saw the bouncy castle, Harold the Giraffe and the many stickers, balloons and lollypops seemed to make their day,” she said.

Feedback from the exhibitors was positive which will be taken on board and considered for next year’s Expo, Hetty said.

There were a number of raffles and a silent auction running which also proved popular,

with winners walking away with some excellent prizes.

“We would like to thank everyone who came to the Expo and to all the businesses and sponsors who supported us,” Hetty said.

“Money raised from the Expo will be used by the Marlborough Parent Centre to continue helping new parents and their babies.”

Safe Air cuts huge blow Safe Air at Woodbourne is to cut at least 80 of their approximately 260 jobs, it was announced last Friday.

Staff were told the news at a meeting attended by union representatives and delegates.

There is as yet no announcement on who is to go or what the last day of work will be.

Safe Air, Blenheim’s biggest single employer and a subsidiary of Air New Zealand, provides maintenance, repair and engine overhaul services for aircraft operators.

The announcement comes as the company’s Air Force’s Hercules and Orion upgrade

programme draws to an end over the next twelve months.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman said it would be a tough blow for the community but the hope was that the government would work with the company to look for opportunities.to secure its long term future.

“Safe Air is a critical part of our aviation sector and we desperately want to retain its operations here.”

But it was now reliant on Defence contracts, meaning that the company’s future was in government hands.

On Monday at 10.30am, a carving will be unveiled and blessed to mark the gratitude of the people of Christchurch to the people of Marlbrough who welcomed them after the earthquakes.

John’s Kitchen convenor Yvonne Daslersaid the pare, or lintel carving, had been created by artist Karl the Carver.

Mayor Alistair Sowman will dedicate the carving above the doors of the Crossroads building and the blessing will be performed by Ian Boddy.

Members of the public are welcome, and tea and muffins will be served after the ceremony.

Mediaworks in receivership Auckland-based broadcaster MediaWorks, which owns TV3, Four, RadioLIVE, the Rock and MoreFM, was put into receivership today after a planned recapitalisation failed to win over its lenders.

MediaWorks has been looking at ways to reduce its debt burden after Australian private equity firm Ironbridge Capital bought 70% of the company in 2007 for some $741 million.

Rangitane House officially opened

By Kat Duggan Rangitane House was officially opened on Monday, a result of Rangitane’s signing of the Treaty of Waitangi 173 years earlier.

About 100 people gathered for the official opening by Treaty Negotiations Minister, Christopher Finlayson.

The building on Main Street was bought by the iwi with money presented by the crown as part of treaty settlements.

Rangitane chairwoman, Judith MacDonald, said she was happy with renovations made to the building, which she said had

“bought the building into the new millennium”.

“Today [Monday] is the anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi here. It is our view that when our ancestors signed that, they did so so that we could contribute to the economy,” she said.

The building is the first commercial development to come from settlements at the top of the South Island.

Mr Finlayson said Rangitane had laid the foundations for a successful future.

Police seek witnesses to late night assault Police are seeking information from the public in relation to an incident outside the Post Office on the corner of Scott and Main streets, Blenheim, in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The incident happened about 1.40am when a 20-year-old male who had left Fairweathers Bar encountered three other males and a fight ensued between him and one of the group.

The 20-year-old received a bite to the ear which required 17 stitches to re-attach.

The main suspect is described as a male Caucasian of slim build, about 19 years old. He was wearing a dark

coloured cap and a brown jacket.

Police would like to identify that person and his companions and anyone else who witnessed the incident.

Detective Constable Lindsay Tilbury of Marlborough CIB said Police had spoken with one witness and were aware there were a number of other people in the area at the time.

They are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.

Theatre plans moving to next stage With the piles for the new theatre going in “at a great rate of knots” Kevin Moseley, chair of the Marlborough Theatre Trust, is already looking two years ahead.

That’s how long he says it will take to see the $17.5m build finished.

ASB has already won the naming rights, and as soon as the final ninety piles are in and the basement is begun in mid-July, their name will feature on the advertising hoardings that will go up at that stage.

Despite predictions that there would be a problem with driving the piles into soft ground, it is ironic that progress with them was at first slightly slower than predicted because of the unexpected hardness of the ground Kevin said.

However, they are now going in at the rate of five or six a day.

Once the basement is complete, progress will become very visible as the concrete tilt slab panels, built off site, are lifted into place.

Fundraiser Ross Anderson’s work will then begin in earnest.

“We asked him to do the job four years ago and told him it would be a three-month job.”

Robyn Cuddon, chair of the fundraising committee, was told the same thing, Like Kevin, she is dedicating almost all her

time to the project.

Offical fundraising initiatives have yet to be announced, waiting for the next stage of construction when the roadway around the site is cleared and the shape of the structure becomes visible.

It was obvious, however, that concerts would form part of them said Kevin.

He said that the huge depth of talent in Marlborough meant that the grand opening in two years time would not only feature locally-based Marlburians, but those well known on the national and world stage.

Some are asking about possible dates and have already signalled their willingness to take part. “They have to organise their schedules years in advance.”

He feels that it will be far more than just an opening concert. “It will have to be an opening week.”

Promotors too have been making contact.

“They are really excited that we will have a 700-seat venue big enought to make it worth their while to come here.

“It’s right on the route between Christchurch and Wellington. This puts Blenheim right on their map.”

The amount of voluntary time going into the theatre is already huge.

Kevin is, however, maintaining his commitment to the Blenheim and District Brass Band and some of his other interests as well.

“I’m not just passionate about the theatre,” he says. “I’m passionate about a whole range of things.”

Volunteer Week celebration National Volunteer Week kicked off on Sunday, celebrating volunteers throughout the nation, and the work they do for their communities.

Volunteers in Marlborough yesterday came together in the Forum at lunchtime, for their second annual Great Volunteer Photo Shoot.

About 40 volunteers from organisations around the region, including Plunket, Marlborough Stroke Foundation, St John, the Cancer Society, Girl Guides, the Omaka Heritage Centre and Hospice Marlborough attended the celebration.

Change to liquor law From yesterday, people can oppose a liquor licence application if they believe the location of a licensed premise will negatively impact the surrounding neighbourhood, including the increase of noise levels or vandalism.

Justice Minister Judith Collins says giving communities greater scope to object to liquor licence applications is the first step in the implementation of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

Ms Collins said the implementation of the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act is only part of creating lasting change to New Zealand’s drinking culture.

“We are all responsible for reducing alcohol-related harm and for changing our drinking culture. We all have a part to play.”

The once a year opportunity to celebrate and recognise local volunteers has arrived in the Marlborough region.

Entries for the TrustPower Marlborough Community Awards opened on Monday, June 17.

The Awards, which are run in partnership with the Marlborough District Council, are open to all voluntary groups and organisations working to make Marlborough a better place to live.

Since the community awards began in 2000, more than $65,000 has been given away to deserving voluntary groups and organisations.

Last year 50 groups were entered for the awards. TrustPower Community Relations Representative Jess Somerville believed there were still many more voluntary groups out there who deserve recognition.

“Now you have the chance to say ‘thank you’ to these volunteers who work hard to improve the community – just by filling out

an entry form. It takes just a few minutes of your time to enter a voluntary group but it will make a real difference to the volunteers you are recognising,” she said.

The awards cover five categories; Heritage and Environment, Health and Wellbeing, Arts and Culture, Sport and Leisure, and Educational and Child/Youth Development.

Category winners receive $500, runners-up receive $250 and the Supreme Winner will take home $1,500 and an all-expenses paid trip to the 2013 TrustPower National Community Awards.

Last year’s supreme winner was the Rarangi District Residents Association.

Anyone can enter a voluntary group or organisation, and organisations can also enter themselves.

When you look back at your sick days, half of those could be classed as what you call mental health days, but really you just didn’t want to go to work. If you’re taking days off because you don’t want to go to work, change your job.

Definitely, I can’t reccommend them highly enough. I think everybody needs to have a mental health day occasionally.

It’s easy to get caught up in the pressure, stress and doing a good job and maintaining a job.

When anxiety comes in, creativity goes out the window, and we need creativity to work.

I think they’re a good idea, just to relax and have time to yourself without other people’s dramas, because, yes I know what that’s like.

I think that they are a good idea, yes, but they should be included as part of your annual sick leave.

I think absolutely, I think it’s vital. It keeps you recharged and ready to get on with work. That’s something we (Age Concern Marlborough) really promote. Especially carers in resthomes or people in caring roles, they need some time out.

The seven stars rise again Dear Ed On June 10, if you go to the Wither Hills at the witches’ hat, you might see the seven stars of Matariki. There has to be a sliver of new moon and you have to be there at six o’clock, at dawn. You might need to bring some breakfast!

Some of the legends are the chief who smashed a star into seven pieces and the stars which were seven houses for people who died. Another legend is that a boy was smart and did not get a fairy wife because he listened

and heard the fairies talking. A good, wise man taught him to turn into a bird and the smart one said, “Don’t you know the fairies are trying to kill you and starve their husbands?”

They trapped them because they were bad. The boys trapped the fairies in the sky and turned them into seven stars.

Soon there will be a new set of postage stamps. One of them is a picture of a fern of the forest.

Bride of the Year Dear Ed, Whilst the entries photographed in your recent centre spread, Wednesday June 12 edition, are all very glamorous I am rather surprised and saddened that none indicated as having been married in a church ceremony.

It was much the same for last year’s competition, with perhaps only two ‘church ceremony’ entrants.

New Zealand is unashamedly secular and God-less – a very sad state of affairs.

A warning for men “Popeye” Davis-Honotana recently learned he is dying from prostate cancer.

Here he talks to Glenise Dreaver about his need to warn other men that a simple test could save their lives.

You may not recognise the name David Rawiri Davis-Honotana.

That’s because he’s better known as Popeye.

The Central Rugby Club stalwart says his life membership, awarded by the club on May 18, is the highlight of his life.

But he is struggling with the fact that he does not know how long that life will be, months or years.

It was only on March 12 this year that Popeye, for years the cook at the club, heard he had inoperable prostate cancer that had spread to his bones.

The diagnosis turned his life upside down. “It was bloody hard work.”

He only found out when he woke one morning in March with a pain down his side and couldn’t move.

Fortunately he had a St John alarm, dating from his quadruple bypass some years ago.

That had been followed by severe infections when he was hospitalised several times and finally needed plastic surgery to repair the damage.

Popeye found out later that he had died and been resuscitated at some stage during one of his surgeries, he’s not sure which.

This time round he was hopitalised and tested, then sent to Nelson for an MRI scan.

First he got the good news. His spine was in good shape, and his heart was fine.

“So I was jitterbugging.

“Beauty!

“Then came the bulldozer. Metatastic prostate cancer.”

To the inevitable question “How long?” he was told it could be any time from a month to six years.

His daughter Jacqueline, in Hastings, was determined he should come and live with her so she could look after him.

“But he’s our kaumatua. You can’t take him away from us. There are plenty of people to look after him here,” she was told.

And Jacqueline finally saw for herself the way that everyone was gathering round him.

Popeye puts it this way: “Central Club is my life.

I’m the man there.”

All the members he counts as friends, but he names his special mates.

“Bill Matthews, Charlie Timoko, Mark Saul.”

Rex Gapper, who organised the life membership, also comes in for a special mention.

It’s for them, and all the boys at the club, as well as his cherished family that he pleads: “Get the jab!”

The PSA test for prostate cancer is no more than a drawing of blood from the arm he said.

“I didn’t get it done. I thought ‘She’s right. I’m healthy’.”

Now he knows better.

Popeye was delighted to hear that Danny, the caretaker at the council flats where he now lives, has the test every year.

“Good on you!” He said.

He’s already warned them all at the Central Club: “I want you all to know that I don’t want to be waiting at the Pearly Gates for any of you guys.”

While Popeye is still working through “Why me? Is this my payment for all I’ve done? My punishment?”, he is making good progress medically.

The doctors are pleased with the results of his tests and he’s been told ‘Just keep on doing whatever it is that you are doing.’

“I don’t want to be waiting at the Pearly Gates for any of you guys.”

Grovetown School gets winter warmers

By Kat Duggan All the pupils and teachers at Grovetown School were each recently gifted a present to keep their feet warm this winter.

Mary Middlemiss, of Seddon, has a grandson, Ethan MacDonald (pictured), at Grovetown School, and she has knitted the whole school a pair of new slippers.

There are 45 pupils and eight staff members, but Mary has been knitting many more pairs of slippers on top of that.

“It started off with the earthquake in Christchurch; my daughter is the principal at St James down there.”

St James School had some wool donated to them after the earthquake, and Mary set about knitting slippers for the students there, to keep their feet warm and their new carpet clean.

“Then young Ethan said he wanted a pair of slippers too and he must have taken them to school and his friends must have liked them because then he asked me to knit some for them too,” she said.

The students at Grovetown School thought their new slippers, which they will be keeping at school to wear there, were “awesome!”

School principal Selena Tonks was also pleased with the winter warmers, which the school got the wool together for.

“The kids were quite chuffed.

They’re perfect for winter,” she said.

Ollie Yuen, Ethan MacDonald, Millie Large and Jack Love are pretty happy with their freshly knitted slippers.

Y Front Up campaign kicks off Pikelets have proved popular with the punters at the Rural Women New Zealand stand at the National Fieldays at Mystery Creek in Hamilton.

It’s all part of the Y Front Up to Prostate Cancer campaign just launched by Rural Women NZ. “Blokes can be a bit slow to visit the doctor and get themselves checked, so we’re giving them a helping hand,” says Rural Women NZ national president, Liz Evans.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men and the third leading cause of cancer deaths in this country.

“We want to raise awareness of the disease and get women to encourage their men to see their GP for a screening test,” says Mrs Evans.

Each year in New Zealand around 2500 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The 2012 Prostate Cancer Taskforce recommends men with urinary symptoms should request assessment by their GP.

This assessment is likely to include a PSA blood test and digital rectal examination (DRE).

The general practitioner may suggest referral to a specialist depending on the severity of the symptoms or if there is a suspicion that there may be underlying prostate cancer.

Between now and November, Rural Women NZ members will be holding prostate-themed events around the country, such as cocktail parties and pikelets for prostate, hosting guest speakers and organising fun activities to raise awareness of the disease and funds for research.

The money collected will be presented to the Prostate Cancer Foundation in November.

Head boy acknowledged by Fijian community

By Kat Duggan The Marlborough Fijian Community hosted a dinner on Saturday night for this year’s Marlborough Boys’ College head boy, Atu Moli.

Fijian community chairman, Tu Daunivavana, said he understood Atu was the first Pacific Island head boy for the college and

he wanted to acknowledge the achievement.

“Fiji and Tonga are neighbours; he [Atu] represents all of the Pacific people in Marlborough, through being head boy and the captain of the First XV. “We just wanted to show how much we support and respect the Tongan community.”

There were about 20 or 30 people at the dinner, a feast prepared by the Fijian community.

Atu said he was overwhelmed by the gesture, and he too was proud of himself becoming head boy.

“It’s been pretty good so far, full on but I’m enjoying the challenges,” he said.

Kelly and Geoffry Hocquard’s daughter Honor was diagnosed with Cyclin Dependent Kinase-Like 5 (CDKL5) at age two.

Initially Honor was the only person in New Zealand affected by CDKL5 but recently another child in Whangarei has been diagnosed.

In an effort to raise awareness of CDKL5 an international Awareness Day was established and on Monday was recognised in New Zealand.

Family, friends, the Renwick School and Renwick Preschool supported the Hocquard family by dressing in green.

“The preschool and school are very supportive of Honor and it was great to see so many people dressing in green and wanting to learn Kelly Hocquard with son Miller (17months) and daughter Honor (4) dressed in green more about CDKL5,” said Kelly. for Monday’s CDKL5 Awareness Day.

Labour shows the flag Two Labour MPs visited Blenheim on Monday as part of their programme of regular visits to Top of The South.

List MP Maryan Street and Darien Fenton, Labour spokeperson for Labour and for Immigration, looked at the operation of the RSE scheme and other immigration and labour issues, as well as meeting Labour Party members here.

It was recess week in Parliament said Ms Street, so she was escorting Ms Fenton to the area as part of a new focus for Labour.

“We have a scheme of Buddy MPs where there is no local Labour member

and I look after electorates in the Top of the South.”

That included Tasman and Kaikoura, and Te Tai Tonga and West Coast Tasman, while having sitting Labour MP’s, were also included in the Top of The South grouping she said.

“It’s a new way of organising ourselves.”

The chair of the newly-established Young Labour group Aaron Goodwin and vice-chair and secretary Corey Hebberd, joined other Labour Party stalwarts at lunch with the two MPs. Aaron said the support was very

encouraging to them, adding that it took a bit of courage to declare his affiliation in this safe National seat.

“Though there is a bit more support now.”

The two members agreed their group of ten also had more prospective members in view.

“And I believe they’re the only Young Labour branch in a non-Labour seat in the country,” said Ms Street.

They had also been asked to support West Coast MP Damien O’Connor to develop a Young Labour group before the end of the year.

Blenheim Police have reported that over the weekend there were two burglaries in the Muller-Redwoodtown area. Both were from insecure garages with tools and electrical items taken.

Three tagging incidents were also reported in the same area.

Two vehicles were reported stolen over the weekend, with a Grey Subaru Legacy taken from Havelock overnight on Saturday, registration TG2051.

A blue Nissan Bluebird was stolen overnight on Sunday, registration WE6284.

Two female beneficiaries, aged 21 and 19, were arrested on historic assault charges and will appear in court on June 24.

Categories include a Schools Edible Garden Award and the Street Awards, this year including Commercial Gardens, Senior and Retirement Home Communal Gardens and Residential Streets.

“We know that there are a lot of people in Marlborough putting a lot of time and effort into promoting gardening and beautifying their surroundings, and we want to celebrate and reward their efforts” said president Jeremy Jones.

One area of special interest is that schools are educating children about the importance of edible gardens and the benefits of fresh seasonal food.

The Marlborough District Council has a long-standing edible gardens scheme said

“They welcomed the approach from the organising committee earlier this year and assisted in sending information about the awards out to local schools.

Monique Fouwler, event coordinator for Nelmac Garden Marlborough said the awards were open to all schools in Marlborough, whether they already had an established garden or not.

“We encourage all schools to enter and hope these annual awards will recognise the efforts made to encourage pupils to develop skills that lead to healthy living.”

The winner will receive a prize package consisting of garden product and manpower to assist in the project of their choice, donated by Bunnings Warehouse in Blenheim.

Schools will receive their application forms in the mail this month or can contact the Nelmac Garden Marlborough office on 03 577 5500.

The return of the Street Awards in 2013 includes a couple of new categories, Best

Retirement Home Communal Garden and Best Senior (70 years plus) Garden.

Garden Marlborough committee member councillor Jenny Andrews suggested the categories recognised that Marlborough was home to many skilled and active senior gardeners.

“The committee unanimously agreed that this group of experts deserved a separate category and we’re hoping to encourage a great many nominations this year”.

Sponsors for the Street Awards, Bayleys Real Estate Marlborough, will assist in scouting the length and breadth of Marlborough for shining examples of well-planted and maintained commercial frontages and residential streets.

A Marlborough Highway Patrol officer had to jump to safety as a motorcyclist sped through Seddon at about 128 kmh on Sunday.

A 48-year-old builder from Christchurch appeared in the Blenheim District Court on Monday on a charge of failing to stop and reckless driving following the incident.

At approximately 2.30pm a Marlborough Highway Patrol unit had attempted to stop him travelling north at a speed measured at 118kmh, but he did not stop.

A second Highway Patrol Unit in Seddon had stopped a motorist, then attempted to signal the fleeing rider to stop in Seddon township when the officer had to leap out of the way.

The motorcyclist continued to flee at very high speeds and was eventually stopped on Weld Pass, just south of Blenheim where he was arrested and taken into custody.

Police would like the motorist to come forward as a witness and said they would not be pursuing the matter for which he was stopped and not completed.

The motorcycle has been impounded.

By Kat Duggan Whale counters in the Marlborough Sounds have counted 17 whales since the beginning of the whale counting season last week.

Volunteers in the annual Department of Conservation project have spotted 16 humpback whales and one blue whale since they started last Saturday.

Nelson Marlborough DOC Communications and Engagement Advisor, Trish Grant, said poor weather had hampered the count, with rain causing poor visibility, and wind meaning the counters had not been able to get out on the water as much.

The crew were counting the whales from their lookout on Arapawa Island.

She said they had just under three weeks

to go in the ninth annual Cook Strait count, and they hoped things would improve.

The survey would run from June 8 until July 9, and was arranged to fall when the

humpbacks were migrating from Antarctic waters, to South Pacific breeding grounds.

Last year the surveyors counted 106 humpback whales.

winter $100m for warmer, healthier homes The Government is investing in a new three-year insulation programme which will deliver warmer, drier and healthier homes to communities in most need, Energy and Resources Minister Simon Bridges said last month.

Budget 2013 allocates $100 million of operating funding over three years to the Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes programme, targeting low-income households for home insulation, particularly those families with children and high health needs. It is expected to insulate around 46,000 additional houses.

“Warmer, drier homes provide real benefits to New Zealanders,” Mr Bridges said.

“As well as energy efficiency gains, insulating homes reduces health risks such as respiratory illnesses and serious diseases like rheumatic fever.

“Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes will help boost the health

Warm Up New Zealand: Healthy Homes will be delivered through the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority (EECA).

as his three young sons’ involvement with soccer has seen him spend nine years coaching junior soccer in Picton.)

With St John, you start building qualifications, first with a first aid certificate, and can then chose to do the next level to become a “First Responder”.

“You don’t have to, but I wanted to study in more depth,” said Andy.

Some of the work is done in workshops, some on line and there is some on-job assessment he says.

This has worked well and now he’s moving on to the next stage of his national diploma, working towards becoming an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician).

He says Beachomber Cruises have been incredibly supportive of his involvement, and now organise his work to fit in with what has become a second job, three shifts a week at Wairau Hospital as a health care assistant.

He says the staff there are “very helpful indeed”.

“Tony Cronin is a very good leader too and there is a good group of volunteers,” he says.

There is one special mention as well.

“I couldn’t do it without the support of my very lovely wife Belle.”

Ambulance service key Providing Ambulance Services throughout New Zealand will always be a core activity for St John.

That service is central to developing strong communities.

This core service is, however, supported by their event medical services for everything from school fairs to major international sports matches.

The organisation says it is also playing an increasing role in meeting the broader health needs of New Zealand communities.

To help people in hospital, they offer our Friends of the Emergency Department and Hospital Friends services, which provide non-clinical support to patients and their family and friends.

New record set A new record was set at the Marlborough Harriers Club Mount Vernon races on Sunday.

Picton’s Daniel Vining took the title, and the record, in the 11km Fun Run/Walk race, in a time of 50 minutes and 45 seconds.

The record was 57 seconds faster than the precious record, set by Kelvin Read in 2005.

Vining was one of 109 competitors who braved the cold wet conditions.

Competitors mainly from Blenheim and Nelson, and also some from Kaikoura, took to the Wither Hills, competing in the

Kids Challenge, the Fun Run/ Walk and the Grand Traverse.

Jeremy McKenzie took out the title in the 18km Grand Traverse, in 1 hour 14 minutes and 29 seconds, while Simon Leaning of Nelson was second and local runner Brett Forgesson third.

The first woman to complete the course was Annabelle Latz, in 1:34:42, followed by sisters Meg and Hannah Maher, who came second and third respectively for the women’s title.

The youngest competitor in the Grand Traverse, was 10 year old Fergus Greer, who finished 48th

Determined to make world top 30

By Kat Duggan Megan Craig recently reached a goal, making it into the Women’s Squash Association (WSA) world top 50.

“I finally broke it!”

“I’ve been waiting for ages to do this, it’s been my goal for a long time,” she said.

Megan, 20, was fourth seed at the City of Perth International Challenge, and took the competition from first seed, fellow Kiwi Amanda Landers-Murphy in the semi final, and from Carrie Ramsey (England) in the final.

The win took Megan from her ranking of 52, to a personal best ranking of 46 in the WSA. Having played squash since she was 12 years old, Megan has no plans to stop now.

“I just want to get better, I’ve broken the top 50 which is pretty cool, but I would like to make the top 30 within a year.

“It’s a big goal…but you’ve got to aim high,” she said.

Another ultimate goal for the Blenheim-based squash player is to make it to the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Megan is already in the New Zealand team, who will be working to try and qualify for the games after nationals.
