Vicki will perform as singer and songwriter KD Lang in a bid to wow the judges and be in the running for first place which will be presented at Friday night’s awards show.

Vicki has chosen to sing KD Lang’s version of ‘Hallelujah’ and has spent time carefully preparing her performance to represent the Canadian singer as closely as possible.

“The biggest challenge was to find similar clothes to her. She has quite a masculine style, she doesn’t perform with props and often sings barefoot,” Vicki laughed.

“Humbled” by Queen’s Service Medal

By Kat Duggan Zayd Ian Blissett has felt a range of emotions since he was recognised in the Queens Birthday Honours list for his services to the Blenheim community.

“I feel quite humbled that somebody would write nice things about me. “ I also feel embarrassed by all the attention…but I also feel honoured if you like.

“Or chuffed,” he added.

Mr Blissett received his QSM for his contributions to a range of multi-cultural and community groups in Marlborough.

He is the founding president and treasurer of the Muslim Association of Marlborough, an Executive Committee member of the New Zealand Korean Veterans’ Association Marlborough, and provides English as a second language support for a number of vital services including the New Zealand Police.

Mr Blissett is also a member of the Marlborough Pacific Island Community Trust, was instrumental in the foundation of the Marlborough Multi-Cultural Society and is the Federation of Islamic Associations of New Zealand Halal supervisor for the upper South Island.

Outside his cultural contributions, Mr Blissett is a Justice of the Peace, has been involved with the Orchid Society and as a Driver for Meals on Wheels in Blenheim and was a voluntary welfare officer for 28 years for the

National Union of Railway workers, covering the area between Picton and Kaikoura.

Despite having done so much for the community, Mr Blissett said he was “confused” to receive the medal.

“What I’ve done was certainly not with any future intention to gain recognition.

“If you are part of a community you have an obligation to do what you can for that community.

“John Donne wrote that ‘no man is an island,’ Mr Blissett said.

Mr Blissett was born in England, served in Korea with the American army for three years, and moved to Blenheim in the early seventies.

Jean Wilson has been awarded the Queen’s Service Medal for services to senior citizens and the community.

The award is for her work with volunteering, teaching and community work.

Her citation says “Mrs Wilson is a Volunteer Community Co-ordinator for the Office of Senior Citizens, and is a passionate advocate for older people, ensuring that their interests are represented at a local and national level.”

She attends district health board meetings and district council meetings to represent the interests of the older community.

A committee member of Senior Expo, the Annual Seniors’ Dance and

Marlborough Positive Ageing, she is also involved in Safe Homes Good Homes and access and mobility committee meetings.

Since 2000, she has been an active member of Grey Power Marlborough, including service as Vice-President and President.

Mrs Wilson organises activities for the Older Person’s Day and established the Intergenerational Games in Blenheim to encourage interaction between senior citizens and young people.

An honorary life member of the Marlborough Quilt Club, she has taught evening classes in quilting and sewing, and has volunteered time to teach basic sewing skills to single mothers.

Sergea nt Lindsay Nor r iss of Woodbourne has been awarded the New Zealand Distinguished Service Decoration for services to the New Zealand Defence Force. His citations says that since 1998 he has managed, on a voluntary basis and in his own time, the ‘In Loco Parentis’ (ILP) scheme at RNZAF Woodbourne.

The aim of the ILP scheme is to provide young trainees with opportunities to test their abilities and learn about teamwork in a variety of environments.

Activities have included horse trekking, hunting, rock climbing, skiing, river rafting and sea kayaking.

As well as planning and coordinating the overall programme, Sergeant Norriss has used his expertise in the fields of sea kayaking and river rafting to conduct and lead these activities.

Over the past 20 years Sergeant Norriss has also provided support and assistance to a number of civilian organisations.

He has been a pivotal link between RNZAF Woodbourne and the local

community and has been responsible for organising water-based activity training for local schools, youth groups and cadet force units.

He has been the administrator for Marlborough Softball for 12 years until his retirement in 2008.

Sergeant Norriss is involved with the Woodbourne Search and Rescue team, taking part in numerous short notice rescue missions, training team members and co-ordinating the acquisition of equipment.

Fresh Mart opens doors today Today a new business opens its doors to the public Fresh Mart on Seymour Street in Blenheim.

Owned by local businessman J Paul and his wife Kuldip, Fresh Mart has a wide range of fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and fish as well as specialty foods aimed at the Pacific Islands community.

“We have traditional Pacific Islands produce and food items from places such as India and Fiji which cannot be sourced elsewhere,” Mr Paul said.

Fresh Mart will also be offering an ‘Easy Money Transfer’ service where people can transfer money to Tonga and Samoa.

After five months of preparation, Fresh Mart opens its doors today and welcomes the community to visit,

providing customers with plenty of ‘$1 Crazy Specials’.

Next Friday will see the store officially opening with a grand opening, free BBQ and plenty of exciting specials.

“We are still in the process of installing new tills and technology but the store will be open up until our grand opening.

“We look forward to welcoming new customers,” Mr Paul said.

Parents rally to get rid of legal highs

By Kat Duggan Protestors who gathered at a Blenheim dairy last week did not have to do much protesting before their purpose was served.

Tip Top Store manager, Sikhjinder Singh, told protestors that their shop, on the corner of Muller Road and Scott Street, would no longer be selling the products not long after they arrived for their rally.

“From today we are not going to sell it [synthetic cannabis products] any more,” Mr Singh told the crowd, adding the store would send current stock back to suppliers.

Rally organiser, Theresa Mischeski, whose 17-year-old son is currently suffering severe symptoms from products bought at the store, was overwhelmed with the turnout and the outcome of the protest.

“This is brilliant, it just proves that people are behind us, it’s brilliant,” Miss Mischeski said.

The peaceful and supportive protest inspired her to continue with the movement.

“This is just one shop, we’re gonna go to every place in town that sells it, we want it completely banned,” she said.

About 50 people turned up to the protest, including Drug Arm chairman, Roy Ramsey.

“I was really impressed, there was a whole heap of young people here.

It’s not just the old people, it was right across the spectrum,” Mr Ramsey said.

Protestors at the shop, while pleased with the outcome, said the change needed to come from the government.

Appeal ends The High Court appeal against the creation of two new salmon farms in the Marlborough Sounds concluded in Blenheim last Thursday with Judge Dobson giving no indication of when a decision would be released.

Two groups, The Environmental Defence Society and Save our Sounds, had separately appealed the approval of two fish farms in the Marlborough Sounds.

The four-day-long appeal had followed last February’s decision by the Environmental Protection Authority to permit four of nine new salmon farms proposed by New Zealand King Salmon.

Wine scholarship awarded Nineteen-year-old Clinton Whyte is this year's winner of the $1500 Wine Marlborough scholarship announced at the NMIT graduation ceremony on Thursday May 30.

The aspiring young winemaker was brought up in Hong Kong but his family returned to Marlborough when he was fourteen and he completed his secondary schooling at Marlborough Boys' College.

From there, he won his first scholarship for tertiary education, that one for academic performance.

His father David is an ex-Queen Charlotte College student who worked for the Hong Kong Government for thirty five years, but retired back to his vineyard at Fairhall and it is there that Clinton hopes to work one day.

He is now in year two of a three-year degree programme and says he is fortunate to have visited good wineries in several countries, including America, which he said, picqued his interest in the field.

As part of a his studies he has already made his own sauvigon blanc from their own vineyard and, he says, learned from the experience.

"It was quite good, but a little bit acidic."

His learning curve has continued with a placement at the Nautilus Estate, for which he has been very grateful.

"That's been a major learing curve."

Clinton's own favourite wine is, he says, "a good gewürztraminer".

"A bit weird for my age, but I enjoy the floral scents."

The Blenheim Meteorological Station has reported that May 2013 was slightly cooler than average, with the weather sunny, wet and calm The 182.5 sunshine hours recorded for May were 108 per cent of the long-term average.

Blenheim recorded 1162.9 hours of sunshine for the five months January to May 2013, 109 per cent of the long-term average.

Rainfall of 94.4 mm was recorded in May, 147 per cent of the long term average of 64 mm.

April and May rainfall combined was 160 of average, making up for the deficit from January to March.

Soil moisture stayed high

throughout the month with a large dump of rain on May 5 and further rain from May 17-22.

There were seven ground frosts during the month, with five of the seven occurring from May 24 to 31.The coldest morning was May 29, with a ground frost of -6.8°C., the second coldest ground frost on record for May and the coldest in the last 30 years, with a reading of -7.1°C recorded on May 24 1983.

May's average daily wind run was 172.1km, well below the long-term average of 218.1 km experienced in 1996-2012).

This continues the trend of lower than average wind-run that Blenheim has been experiencing over recent years.

Tan hands over Still Books

By Kat Duggan Tan McNabb last week handed over the keys to her second hand book shop and brewery, Still Books after 37 years last week.

Past and present staff and customers gathered at the shop on Friday afternoon to farewell the friendly face which has become more than just a shopkeeper.

“I’m taken aback,” Mrs McNabb said of the surprise farewell gettogether, which included music from a local ukulele group.

She said she had mixed feelings about handing the keys of the Scott Street store over.

“In some ways it’s kind of something I’m going to look forward to cause I’ve always had the shop in the back of my mind.

“I’m lucky because very few people get to do what they love.

Books have always been a big part of it, and I’ve made lots of friends,” she said.

Mrs McNabb has spent 37 years with Still Books, and said you meet a lot of interesting people, and come across a lot of interesting things.

“As a second hand book dealer you never know what’s going to be in that box, and what is going to be offered and that’s exciting,”

she said.

New Still Books owner Colin Payne, who also owns Casa Interiors with his wife and took over the shop yesterday, knew he had big shoes to fill.

“We’re going to continue on pretty much as Tan has.

She’s got a pretty good running ship here so it will be business as usual.

“She’s got a very loyal following.

Hopefully we can keep that going,” he said.

Mrs McNabb did not yet have any new plans in mind, other than enjoying her retirement.

Cancer Society needs books

By Kat Duggan Cancer Society Marlborough is appealing to the public for books to sell at their upcoming Mid Winter Book Sale fundraiser.

The book sale will be the second for the organisation, who held one last year, in honour of former executive member Bruce Callaghan.

Cancer Society volunteer coordinator, Margaret Tepania said Mr Callaghan had wanted to hold a book sale, but had died of cancer.

“So the Cancer Society went ahead and did it in his memory,” she said.

The society teamed up with The Beavertown Blenheim Lions Club last year for the first sale, which she said had been fantastic.

“We made over $7000 last year which was absolutely amazing; we really appreciated working together with them.”

The Cancer Society was hoping to make the book sale an annual event, and was this year teaming up with Marlborough Girls’ College students for the event, which Margaret said was fantastic.

Money from the sale was to be used to keep the organisation and its services going in Marlborough,

Dear Ed, Carbon dioxide is odourless, colourless but poisonous. It kills brain cells. Gerald Stewart (Blenheim Sun Letter, May 15) tells us that more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere is good for him and millions of other oxygen breathers. Well, oxygen will kill him as fast as carbon dioxide. What we breathe is not oxygen, it's air. As everybody knows, air is a mixture of nitrogen (about 78%), oxygen (about 20%), other gases and an ever increasing proportion of CO2 due to human activities like burning fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide combines with water to create carbonic acid and is making our oceans more and more acidic which will lead to the loss of fish species and other life in the oceans. Gerald Stewart says more CO2 is beneficial to plants and trees for bigger and healthier growth. What trees is he talking about? Only 1% of our Kauri forest remains, but is dying of fungal diseases inflicted by human activities. CO2 kills brain cells and it looks like a lot of damage has already been done. Shannon sets off on 3440km ride Former Picton man Shannon Huntley has set off on his cancer fundraising bike ride from Perth to Melbourne nearly three weeks early.

Mr Huntley had originally planned to set off on the 3440km ride on June 15, but instead left last Tuesday, May 28.

By Sunday Mr Huntley had covered 280km, and while there have been some slight delays with punctures and a bent rear wheel rim, he is in good spirits and is adjusting to the rigours of riding all day.

As Mr Huntley and his fundraising team all live in Perth, originally the purpose of the fundraising was to raise money for the WA Cancer Council.

All proceeds were to be donated to the Australian charity.

However as many New Zealand fans began following his progress, his fundraising team (Team Murry) have since liaised with Cancer Society NZ and are now able to offer New Zealanders the chance to donate to Cancer Society NZ.

The aim of the ride is to raise $10,000 for cancer research and to help those living with and fighting cancer.

Mr Huntley phones Team Murry each day to report his progress and to update them on his state of health.

He has been struck by the support he has had from complete strangers, including by a shop in a small town who mended his bent wheel rim for free so he could carry on with his ride.

Shannon and Team Murry would also like to thank those many people, friends and strangers alike, who have donated and posted messages of support and to urge more people to donate no matter what the amount.

Little theatre, big progress Bruce Anderson, the manager of the Picton Little Theatre, says the last year’s influx of support and sponsorship for the venture is all about the theatre and business reconnecting.

Sixty nine local sponsors have, in the last ten months, matched donations from Pub Charity and the Marlborough District Council to provide $34,000 for the Picton Little Theatre.

Most of the money has been spent on revamping the old building and upgrading the heating and lighting, along with vital health and safety requirements.

Four thousand dollars alone has gone on eight new stage curtains, made with special material imported from Germany.

“Totally, totally fireproof,” says theatre manager Bruce Anderson.

Bruce is also the owner-manager of the Picton Puppet theatre. Not your usual puppet theatre. Think eight meters wide by 3.20m deep.

Bruce made both the set and the huge puppets being taken to schools in the Marlborough area to introduce children to puppet making and theatre. The Sounds Air-sponsored scheme also aims to encourage creativity and a can-do approach to life.

A passion for the arts themselves, but also as a catalyst for community development and growth is what fires Bruce.

The career path leading him here was not a straight line however. While he was taken to Australia as a child, he returned to Britain and first trained in puppetry.

Later, he moved on to what is now the Royal Central School of Speech and Drama in London. “One of the best in the world ... patrons Dame Peggy Ashcroft, Judy Dench ...”.

During his two years with the English Shakespeare Company he spent eight weeks touring Africa in the cast of Macbeth and the Tempest and they also took the shows to Japan and Germany.

Then he began working in props in opera in Berlin with such big names as Jose Carreras.

The next ten years were truly life changing, Bruce said.

Having created his own consulting firm Dramatrix, offering training in management and public presentation, he worked

throughout central and eastern Europe.

While there, it was as chairman of the British Chamber of Commerce in Hungary that his life took shape, with a passion to foster and invigorate business starting to rule his life. “It was a turning point.”

Now he’s chosen Picton as the place to live and work Why? “Well it’s one of the most stunningly beautiful places in the 39 countries that I’ve travelled to.”

It also happened because he is a selfconfessed “rugbyhead”.

There was the Rugby World Cup, a cancelled plane back to Australia, and a day spent looking up an old friend.

Nikki Henson of the Juggler’s Rest backpackers had briefly been a girlfriend when they were both at school in Britain.

When the two met after 23 years “we just clicked” he said. A visit of one day stretched into four. Two months later he was back to live.

Picton needs reinvigorated he says. “There are thirteen empty shops here.”

He is br i ng i ng “astounding” class entertainers to attract people to stay.

“If something is on, people will come.

Or they will stay an extra day.”

That was proven on Friday evening, when the theatre box office and bar takings set a new record with over $3000 taken he said.

“There were a few tourists, but it was mainly locals. A packed house.”

Children lead Smokefree Day

By Kat Duggan Marlburians from across the board gathered in the Forum on Friday afternoon to celebrate World Smokefree Day. Students from Blenheim School, Nga P u awa i Koh a nga Re o, Marlborough Boys’ College and Queen Charlotte College came together for the event, organised by Smokefree Marlborough.

Smokefree Marlborough health promoter Felicity Spencer said cooperation from the college students was vital in spreading the message about smoke free environments.

“It’s really choice to have them mentoring. They’re our future and young leaders and it’s all about whanau. That’s our message for the day,” she said.

The college students lead games and activities for the younger children, who also made signs for the event.

“It’s just a chance to promote smokefree environments and to encourage those who want to quit to give it a go by letting them know what people and services are out there,” she said.

Marlborough Mayor Alistair Sowman attended the event, and was impressed by the children’s attitudes towards smoking, which he said had changed a lot over time.

Whale watching this week On Saturday June 8, seven former local whalers, Department of Conservation researchers, and many other volunteers start their tenth annual whale survey.

A record 106 humpback whales were counted in last year’s four-week survey with a record 21 in one day on June 22.

The survey will run until Saturday July 6 and aims to assess humpback whale recovery since commercial

Scarf Expo The Creative Fibre Guild has many members who are passionate about fibre and how it is used.

They meet regularly at Brayshaw Park and are very keen to show their skills and pass them on to others.

The guild members are holding a week long Scarf Expo from June 10-15.

The humble scarf has become an essential part of our wardrobe, and with winter approaching guild members have been busy creating all sorts of wonderful scarves to keep us warm and look good.

These are to be on display at 22 Scott Street. Some are for sale and others to just view and others are still in the making.

The guild members comprise

highly skilled weavers, spinners, felters and knitters. All these skills will be showcased so you can see how they are done. The looms will be up, the felting tables will be used, the spinning wheels turning and the needles clicking.

Certain days will have different emphasis. Monday, come to talk to the Weavers, Tuesday, see the Spinners in action, Thursday there will be felters around and on Friday there will be many knitters.

The other days too there will be lots of people to see and chat to.

You can also come and make a scarf yourself. If you want to do this, then call in at the beginning of the week and book a time later on to have a go.

Magician spreads anti-bullying message Redwoodtown School had a visit from a top school performer yesterday morning, who bought with him an antibullying message.

Elgregoe, also known as Greg Britt, and his assistant and wife Sue, use the illusion of magic to capture the attention of the kids.

They challenge them to form caring communities and encourage them to build good relationships and make a positive contribution to their school.

After performing for over 700,000 students over 16 years, Elgregoe said he does not get tired of spreading the message.

“I never tire of doing the school shows, students love the

show and the teachers love the message reinforcing the antibullying message in a different and memorable way,” he said.

Elgregoe’s dedication to the school shows has seen him become one of New Zealand’s top school performers and most talented musicians.

In 2009 he became Elgregoe a Member of the NZ Order of Merit for services to education.

In the same year he also received The Variety Artists Club of New Zealand’s Top Children’s Entertainer Award and The Grand Master of Magic Award.

The 2013 show, ‘You’ve Got The Power,’ uses tricks, puppets, music and props to portray the messages, and Elgregoe performs to Redwoodtown School pupils. includes five real birds.

Police inbrief Friday May 31 At 7pm a 18 year old unemployed male was arrested at a Litchifield street address for burglary. Police alleged that earlier that day he had entered a Faulkland Drive address and taken a flat screen TV and an X Box.

Saturday June 1 A 19-year-old youth received a pre charge warning and was released after being arrested at 2.40am on Market Street for breaching the liquor ban.

At 3.40am a 30-year-old unemployed male was arrested and held in custody to appear in court after breaching his bail conditions by failing to report to the Blenheim Police.

A 21-year-old female part-time kitchen hand was taken into custody at 9am for detoxification and held until sober and capable of looking after herself.

At 11.10pm a 26-year-old male builder was arrested in Kinross Street for disorderly behaviour. He was later released when sober and received a pre charge warning An 18-year-old unemployed male was also arrested that morning for a

historic shoplifting at the Blenheim Super Liquor on Grove Road.

He had taken a bottle of Bombay Sapphire Gin and was identified from the CCTV operating in the building.

The man will appear in the Blenheim District Court on June 10, where he will also face two historic burglary charges.

Sunday June 2 At 2.15am a 20-year-old male forestry worker was arrested on Kinross Street for breaching the liquor ban. He was held in custody until sober and released with a pre charge warning.

Fifteen minutes later, a 33-year-old female homemaker was stopped driving her Honda motor vehicle on Muller Road.

The drink driving test results recorded twice the legal limit, police said. She was also charged with driving while her driver's licence was suspended.

At 11.30am a 24-year-old female shop assistant was arrested on Redwood Street for driving whilst forbidden. Her vehicle was impounded and she will appear in the Blenheim District Court on June 17.

A 23-year-old female sales assistant was arrested outside the Blenheim Police Station at 6.35pm after she verbally abused her ex partner. She was warned for disorderly behaviour and threatening language.

At 10.45pm a 35-year-old male vineyard worker and a 33-year-old male labourer were arrested on Redwood Street after police said they were observed behaving badly in Lewis Street, being intoxicated, yelling obscenities in the street and kick-

ing parked cars. Both were held until sober and released with a pre-charge warning At 1am a 53-year-old sickness beneficiary was arrested on the Taylor River Reserve he was observed on a property situated in Dillons Point Road with no lawful excuse. He was trespassed from the property and received a pre charge warning.

A 25-year-old foreign national was arrested on Dillons Point Road at at 5.15pm for assaulting his girlfriend.

Incidents and accidents On Saturday June 1 at about 9.30am, Police attended a three car accident on Grove Road near the intersection of Nelson Street.

Police attriibuted the cause of the nose to tail accident as being the rear driver looking at his navigation device and not paying attention to the vehicles stopping in front of him.

When he observed the vehicle in front braking, he panicked and pushed his foot on the accelerator instead of the brakes.

The road was blocked for a short period until the vehicles were moved to the side of the road

Energy saving tips Here are some tips to help you save even more energy Save a percentage off your winter power bills by switching off appliances such as your TV, VCR, stereo, DVD, microwave, washing machine, dryer or dishwasher at the wall so they’re not wasting electricity on standby.

Switch off all lights when you leave a room.

Save even more by turning off outside lights when they aren’t needed.

If you can, turn off your heated towel rail during the day.

Wash clothes in cold water and dry them on the line as much as possible before you

use the clothes dryer.

Shower instead of having a bath and make it a short shower.

Check your thermostat isn’t set too high on your hot water cylinder, 60 degrees Celsius is the recommended temperature. Many people set the temperature of their hot water cylinder too high. The ideal setting is 60°C. It is important that the water in the cylinder is this hot to kill bacteria such as legionella but higher temperature settings only increase your power bill and can scald you (it only

takes one second at 70°C).

Only heat the rooms you are in. Close the curtains as soon as the sun disappears in the afternoon.

Repair leaky hot water taps.

If you have a second fridge or freezer, empty it and switch it off.

Install a hot water cylinder wrap. The biggest power consumer in your home is a hot water cylinder. Insulate hot water pipes leading from the cylinder for at least the first two metres.

Know when to call an electrician Electricity is one of those things best left to the experts.

If you have an electrical problem and are unsure why, pick up the phone rather than try and tackle it yourself.

When you have an electrical problem, the best thing to do is to try simple solutions first.

Write down observations about the electrical problem so you can explain it in detail to your electrician.

Most importantly you must regard your safety.

Electricity is as dangerous as it is necessary. It is not worth your health or your life to try to fix a problem on your own.

Common electrical problems The circuit breaker trips (or the fuse blows) when I run certain appliances. What do I do, call an electrician?

You may notice that particular appliances in your home trip your circuit breaker, especially when used all at once.

It may be that you need a separate circuit for a heavy-load appliance or simply some advice from an electrician on how to avoid this happening. They can assess the problem and provide a solution.

My lights are flickering. What causes this?

You could try tightening your light bulbs or in the case of a flickering lamp, plug another lamp into the same outlet to see if the problem continues.

If it does you will need to call an electrician as they could be a poor connection somewhere along the circuit. If this problem is affecting most of the home it could be a problem

in the main wire connection to the house. An electrician will be able to diagnose this problem.

Some of my outlets and/or switches don’t work. Should I call an electrician?

If a whole set of outlets or switches suddenly go dead it may mean you have a poor connection somewhere along the line. In this case you will need to call an electrician who can fix the problem with minimal disruption and mess to your home.

My clothes dryer won’t heat up. Does it mean it’s broken?

This could be that the dryer’s circuit breaker has a poor or faulty connection or fuse.

Before rushing out to purchase a new one, call your electrician or contact the manufacturer if the warranty is still valid.

Electric blankets Saturday was the first official day of winter, a time when many drag out their electric blankets to put back on the beds.

It is important to make sure your electric blanket is up to scratch, and follow these safety rules for using them: • If your electric blanket or cord is showing any signs of wear, have it checked by a competent service person or have it replaced. Don’t take the risk.

• Always make sure that your electric blanket is switched off before getting into bed.

• Never use pins or sharp objects to secure the electric blanket to the bed and never tuck it in under the bed.

winners The Blenheim Kickboxing Club is on a roll, with three members coming back from the nationals in Nelson with two golds and a silver medal.

The "Deadly Dance" Muay Thai competition was held on May 25, with 24 fighters from clubs as far afield as Christchurch through to Masterton.

Newcomer Will Soward took a gold medal after just eight months in the sport, and Raymond Annan also took gold in his bout with a technical knockout after 20 seconds.

Paul McKay, in the sport for four months and also in his first fight, brought home silver. He lost by a decision.

"It was close" said Will.

Their coach, Rajai Shram, trained in Muai Thai in both the land of his birth, Jordan, and for three years in Thailand.

He said the sport is "real Thai kickboxing. Fighters aren't padded up and it's full contact. That includes elbows, knees ... " Will said the sport offered benefits he did not get from other sports he had tried.

Honours presented Olympic gold-medal winner Joseph Sullivan of Picton has been presented with the New Zealand Order of Merit for outstanding performances on the water.

Peter Bugler, also of Picton, received a Queen’s service medal at the same cermony, for services to cycling tourism including establishing the Geriatrix Cycle Tour group in 1994.

He has also served the Youth Hostel Association of New Zealand for over 45 years.

The Fly-Casters Group has started its series of winter casting lessons again.

Last year the exercise was so successful with 37 flycasters attended from Picton, Havelock, St Arnaud and the Sounds requested classes this year.

Final pigeon race On Saturday the Blenheim Pigeon Club held its last race of the 2013 young bird season the Top of the South Classic.

This is raced with a team of two birds and the average speed of each team is used to determine the winner.

Sixty four birds were released at 8.15am from Timaru into blustery conditions.
